The Four Seasons at Sayan in Ubud, Bali, used to be a wonderful retreat. But that is now severely compromised by hordes of screaming rafters who come down the river every few minutes, destroying the peace. Thus, sitting by the swimming pool which is actually perched on the river, is no longer a relaxing pastime! It is very sad to see hotels encourage this, including the Four Seasons itself which has a designated stop on the rafting route. And the local government does not put a ban on rafting, possibly because of the kind of revenue it generates. However, the price is paid in terms of damage to the physical environment and the sound pollution it creates. In addition to ruining Ubud’s reputation as a tranquil haven.

River Tern Lodge

Nestled in the Western Ghats the River Tern Lodge gets its name from the nearby island that attracts hundreds of river terns during the breeding season. It is located on a hillock on the edge of the Bhadra reservoir, near Lakkavali: a stone’s throw away from the northern boundary of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, in the Chikmaglur district. Chikmaglur was once a princess’ dowry – and still holds the charms of a place that a king’s favourite daughter once took as her dowry. Amongst all this, is a perfect place to form a whole new bond with nature.

Still Water, Still Mind – Bhadra

ನಿಶ್ಚಲ ನೀರವ ಜಲ, ನಿಶ್ಚಲ ಮನಸ್ಸು

I’m seated at a balcony in Kerala, at the onset of the monsoon, overlooking the heaving Lakshadweep Sea; the breeze is forcing the trees to bend over in obeisance to the monsoon and the sea responds with booming gun-salutes as waves crash over the shore. And, yours truly is seated on the floor, with the breeze sending a few stray drops her way.

Bhadra – On the Contrary

places to visit near jungle resort

After almost a year of not getting to be out in the wild, I pounced at a chance that came by to make a trip to Bhadra Tiger Reserve! I had heard about the beauty of that forest and the abundant bird life it hosts, and it had been on my wishlist for a long time. Along with a friend who accompanied me, I planned a three-day trip to stay at the River Tern Lodge in Lakkavalli, run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. The five-hour drive from Bangalore to the resort took us through highways lined with trees wearing their floral cloaks, as if to flaunt their spring collection.

The 10 Best Jungle Lodges in South America

Tambopata Research Center Reception

The best jungle lodges in South America will depend on your preferences.

There are jungle lodges that focus on wildlife, comfort, culture and closeness to town. There are also lodges that offer you a balance. The top priority for most people is nature, which means you can find abundant wildlife to see many animals and plants.

For this list, we will focus on wildlife, comfort, service and responsibility. The lodges include meals, transfers and guided tours in high wildlife areas. Most of the lodges also provide cultural experiences.

Jump straight to our selection of the 10 best lodges

As the Amazon is a large area that covers 40% of South America, we will mention some regions to focus on. One of the best regions to visit is named Tambopata, which is a wildlife-rich section of forest in southern Peru.

This region is fortunate to contain more claylicks than anywhere in Amazonia. Colorful parrots, monkeys and other wildlife regularly visit these areas. This means you have almost guaranteed wildlife sightings of iconic Amazon animals.

For Peru, see the top Amazon tours in Peru . And to focus on lodges, you can choose from top 10 jungle lodges in Peru .

Let’s get started with the top jungle lodges in South America.

We will start with Puerto Maldonado in the southern Peruvian jungle and work our way around Amazonia.

Best Jungle Lodges near Puerto Maldonado, Peru

Puerto Maldonado is a fantastic place for an Amazon Rainforest tour. This is because the town is in an area of Amazonia with the most clay licks of anywhere in South America.

Clay Lick - Amazon Rainforest, Puerto Maldonado, Peru

These licks are perfect places for you to see many different animals. Birds from parakeets to large macaw parrots flock to feed from clay. The clay helps the birds and other animals detoxify food they have eaten in the forest. It also provides a reliable source of essential salt, which is hard to find in Amazonia.

Not only visited by birds, clay licks are also frequented by different mammals. Capybara, monkeys and even tapir, South America’s largest land mammal, visit the licks. These large herbivores can in turn draw predators like jaguar. This markedly increases your chances of seeing these elusive cats.

One of the deepest lodges in the Amazon is the Tambopata Research Center. This is accessed from Puerto Maldonado and offers you fantastic wildlife experiences.

Click the video below for an introduction.

Tambopata Research Center

Not only providing access to one of the largest clay licks, the Tambopata Research Center offers you a 20% chance to see jaguar by the river.

Another lodge that provides access to this large claylick is access from Refugio Amazonas Lodge . This is a little closer to Puerto Maldonado and offers more cultural experiences.

Best Jungle Lodges for Tambopata As the closest protected area to Puerto Maldonado , Tambopata National Reserve offers fantastic tours.

You can see beautiful, wildlife-rich lakes and claylicks visited each day by hundreds of parrots. You will also enjoy rainforest walks through the jungle to spot many animals and plants.

In the Tambopata region, you have options if you’re looking for a short 3 or 4-day tour. An excellent jungle lodge to choose is Posada Amazonas Lodge . This is in a private community-owned section of rainforest connected to Tambopata Reserve close to Puerto Maldonado. The lodge sits on a beautiful rainforest lake to see giant river otters.

Posada Amazonas

The community-owned Posada Amazonas offers a high chance of spotting giant otters and other lake-living animals. The lodge is located in an area of connected rainforest with Tambopata. And it’s a great option for 2-nights or more. This is also a good choice for cultural experiences.

A little deeper in the rainforest in the buffer zone of Tambopata Reserve is the Refugio Amazonas . This is a similar lodge offering the same high standard of service and comfort to the Posada Amazonas. Because this is deeper in the rainforest, there is a higher diversity of animals to find.

Both the Posada Amazonas and Refugio Amazonas are near wildlife-rich oxbow lakes.

The lakes are brimming with wildlife. As well as lake species like hoatzin birds, caiman and giant river otters, you can find other animals. The area is visited by monkeys like capuchins, squirrel monkeys, titi monkeys and large and loud howler monkeys.

If you’re traveling as a family with young children, the Refugio Amazonas Lodge offers another reason to visit. The Refugio Amazonas has a children’s trail in the rainforest. This is the only trail of its kind in Amazonia. Young children can see information on the jungle’s plants and animals in an engaging and relatable way.

As the name suggests, researchers are studying Tambopata wildlife from this lodge. Research is mainly on the macaws. The lodge also offers a 20% chance of spotting jaguar. However, there are many other Amazon Rainforest plants and animals to find.

Best Experiences for Manu National Park Manu National Park is one of the largest national parks in Peru. However, unlike the Tambopata Reserve above, visitors are prohibited from entering the park itself.

There are different experiences surrounding the park. In the surrounding region, you can see several different monkeys, giant otters and beautiful macaws. Although the Manu lowlands are less accessible than Tambopata, you can visit the Amarakaeri Reserved Zone. You can also visit a cloud forest section of Manu from Cusco.

Best Jungle Lodges in Peru from Iquitos

Peru’s gateway to the rainforest along the Amazon River is Iquitos.

You can enjoy fantastic Amazon River tours from Iquitos , but the city is also a great place for a jungle lodge experience.

The best wildlife is further from the city. For the best experience, it’s best to visit the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and adjacent Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

If you’re after a deep jungle experience from Iquitos, the top recommendation is the Tahuayo Lodge .

The Rainforest Alliance certified Tahuayo Lodge is highly regarded by wildlife enthusiasts. The lodge offers you attentive and friendly staff and knowledgeable guides. You then have an incredibly high diversity of animals and plants to explore. From the Tahuayo Lodge, you will have almost exclusive access to the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

Tahuayo Lodge

On tours of 6 days or more, you can experience two different areas. You will head out with your private guide from the main Tahuayo Lodge and Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center. See several primate species and many other Amazon Rainforest animals and plants. The Tahuayo Lodge boasts the most activities in Amazonia, including the rainforest’s longest canopy zipline system.

Best Jungle Lodges in Brazil from Alta Floresta

No other area in southern Brazil’s Amazon has been studied as much as the forest surrounding Alta Floresta. Naturalists have found that no other area in Brazil’s eastern Amazon has such a high number of bird species.

A favorite jungle lodge is the Cristalino Lodge. From here, you can explore the forest and waterways to see some of the region’s 500 bird species. This lodge has the highest canopy tower in Amazonia. From here, you will have incredible views of the forest. And it’s a fantastic place to spot birds flying over the rainforest.

The Cristalino Lodge has comfortable areas to relax while experiencing the rainforest. One of the favorite places is the floating deck, which is complete with loungers and parasols. The lodge protects surrounding forest, is committed to ecotourism and funds rainforest research. There are also programs to help educate the people of Alta Floresta about their forest.

Best Jungle Lodges in Bolivia from Rurrenabaque

Rurrenabaque is Bolivia’s gateway town to the Amazon Rainforest. The main protected area is Madidi National Park, which ranks as one of the largest parks in Amazonia.

From here, you can choose two excellent lodges. These include the budget conscious Serere Lodge with a high focus on conservation and the community-owned Chalalan Eco Lodge. Both of these lodges provide fantastic wildlife opportunities. They are also seeing jaguar and giant river otters returning to surrounding areas, which are the symbols of a healthy forest.

Best Jungle Lodges in Ecuador from Coca

El Coca is Ecuador’s gateway town to the Amazon Rainforest. And from here, you can experience the top lodges for Ecuador’s Amazon .

Sacha Lodge Canopy Walkway, Coca, Ecuador

Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest is arguably the most species-rich area of land on Earth. Research has found a higher diversity of life across a range of animals and plants than anywhere else. The Yasuni National Park is the area where many of the records were set.

The Yasuni National Park is the jewel in the crown of Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest . This is an impressive rainforest area home to an incredible amount of animals and plants.

The park covers 9,820 km2 (2.4 million acres) and sits along the Napo River at the north eastern edge of the country. The Napo River joins with others in Peru to become the Amazon River for its journey across the continent. The Napo is the river you will travel down for your transfers to your jungle lodge or while aboard your Amazon River cruise.

The best way to experience the Yasuni National Park itself is aboard a river cruise. And there are two to choose from in Ecuador. These are the Manatee Amazon Cruise and its sister vessel the Anakonda . Both offer a fantastic experience with guided tours in Ecuador’s Amazon , delicious meals and comfortable suites.

The surrounding rainforest is where you find the recommended jungle lodges for Ecuador’s Amazon.

The premium lodges for Ecuador’s rainforest are the Sacha Lodge , with its impressive canopy walkway and wildlife-rich 5,000 acre reserve, and the very comfortable La Selva Lodge .

The Sacha Lodge sits within a 5,000 acre private reserve next to the Yasuni National Park.

Offering spacious cabins and an incredible canopy walkway, the lodge is a favorite experience. The walkway reaches 940 feet (275 meters) into the rainforest. And you will be walking 94 feet (30 meters) above the forest floor.

For a short introduction, click the video below.

Sacha Lodge

The walkway provides a fantastic perspective and is a great place to spot some of the 587 different birds. Incredibly, the birds you can see from Sacha Lodge represent 37% of all the birds in Ecuador.

From the Sacha Lodge, you will explore the rainforest with your expert guide to find many animals and plants.

Find caimain crocodilians, delicate tree frogs and fascinating lizards. Yo will also see the many different monkeys, including capuchins, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys and tamarins.

7 Belize Jungle Lodges You Will Love to Stay

  • Updated: 04/12/2024

If you are dreaming of waking up to the sounds of tropical birds, sipping morning coffee as you watch the river flow by, or dining on farm-to-table tropical fruits and vegetables raised on rich jungle soil—then staying in a Belize jungle resort would be the perfect way to make it a reality.

On a recent trip over the winter holidays to Belize, my family of two adults and two teens stayed at a jungle lodge along the Macal River just outside the traveler hub town of San Ignacio.

I share a full review of the resort we chose—in “ Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge in Belize: All You Need to Know to Book a Stay .” Then, I provide a ranked overview of the six other highly rated jungle lodges we considered booking below. And provide three more options.

Table Of Contents

All opinions in this article are my own . None of the lodges listed paid me for this post or my resort stay.

San Ignacio, Belize: An Overview

San Ignacio is a town in Belize near the western border with Guatemala that travelers use as a base to visit Mayan ruins, explore the jungle, and go on cave adventures.  Located about an hour and 45-minute drive from the Philip S.W. Goldson International airport, I show where to find San Ignacio and how to get there in my companion article, “ How to Best Spend Your Time in Belize: 36 Things to Do Near San Ignacio .”

After reading two excellent books— The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman’s Fight to Save the World’s Most Beautiful Bird and Sastun: My Apprenticeship with a Maya Healer —that take place in Belize on or near the Macal River, I knew I wanted to stay outside the bustle of San Ignacio and next to the river where the jungle was most dense and the wildlife most abundant.

So, I focused my lodging search on highly rated full-service resorts found south of town and along the river.  I wanted a lodge that offered family rooms with at least three beds, on-site meals, a range of activities, and the ability to coordinate transport from the airport or off-site day tours since we did not plan to rent a car.

7 Jungle Lodges Near San Ignacio, Belize

Here are the properties I recommend —see them in the map and the list below.

How to use this map:  In the map header, click the square tab to the left of my logo or click the enlarge frame to the right to view detail. You can save the map to “Your Places” on Google Maps by clicking the star next to the map name. Or you can share it by clicking the share icon.

I rank the list below, starting with my top choice. My ranking considerations included : peak holiday season affordability for a family of four, actual first or second-hand experience, guest reviews, availability of family-friendly lodging, and presence of on-site amenities.

Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge

The lodge at chaa creek, black rock lodge, table rock jungle lodge, sweet songs jungle lodge, mystic river resort, crystal paradise resort.

BONUS: Check out these three additional nature lodge recommendations.

Depending on the time of year you choose to visit Belize, how far out you plan your trip, and your travel budget and preferences, you may find a different jungle resort better fits your travel wants and needs.

Most Belize jungle resorts can accommodate only a small number of guests . Macaw Bank, where we stayed, only has six rentable units. Other lodges rarely have more than 10 or 20. Book early to secure your preferred room choice.

  • A relaxed off-the-grid eco-lodge with affordable rates, run by exceptional management, offering outstanding cuisine.
  • Location: On 50 acres along the east bank of the Macal River, just under a 30-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include six one-bedroom cabanas that can accommodate one to four guests.
  • Activities: Macaw Bank offers on-site things to do—such as early morning bird walks, jungle hikes, canoeing, and a full range of off-site activities.
  • More info and book here .

I ultimately decided to stay at Macaw Bank because of its location, the strength of its online reviews, and my budget.

The jungle riverside area of Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge appealed to me, as did its prices—more affordable than nearby resorts, particularly during the peak holiday season—along with high ratings and reviews gushing praise on the caring lodge managers.  After researching all other options, staying here became my number one choice.

I recap our excellent experience here . Our stay at Macaw Bank ended up being one of the top five favorite places we have booked in all of our travels —and hovering around a 50-country count—we have traveled extensively .

To determine if Macaw Bank is the right place for you, check out my full review to learn what we loved most in “ Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge in Belize: All You Need to Know to Book a Stay .”

Note for larger families, most of the lodges in this list offer limited accommodation options for groups larger than four or five. If you do not book early to secure the few family options they offer, you will want to inquire if additional bedding is available in the standard cabanas. Or you may find you need to rent two units.

  • Luxury lodge with top-tier all-inclusive rates during peak holiday seasons. Rates are not all-inclusive the rest of the year and range from above-average to expensive, depending on the lodging unit booked.
  • Location: On 400 acres along the west bank of the Macal River, about a 15-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include 20+ one to three-bedroom units ranging from stand-alone cottages to luxury villas with a butler.
  • Activities: Chaa Creek offers several on-site things to do—such as jungle walks, visiting the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm, canoeing, and a full range of off-site activities. For families staying in the IX Chel Villas, Chaa Creek provides childcare as an add-on.
  • More info and book here .

With its tagline, “Wildly Civilized,” Chaa Creek is the place you can go to experience the best of Belize in style and with exceptional service.

Staying at this lodge was highly recommended by two friends who had recently been guests with their families. In addition, the owners—who founded Chaa Creek in the early 1980s—are featured as friends of the writer in the book Sastun  I mentioned above, so I was already intrigued.

It was the first accommodation option I explored when booking my early January trip in October.  Unfortunately, the Chaa Creek pricing, especially during the peak holiday season that included the nights I wanted to stay, was out of my reach. Especially as they required guests to commit to an all-inclusive holiday package covering lodging, meals, and activities.

For the one unit that was still available and large enough for our group (a two-bedroom villa), the all-inclusive holiday rates ran $625 per person per day—a budget-blowing $10,000 for our planned four nights.  I had to keep looking.

Chaa Creek rates during non-peak periods are more reasonable , especially for their cottages.  Though for this wintertime getaway, any dreams I had of lounging next to the infinity pool surrounded by jungle foliage while I sipped a cocktail waiting for my spa treatment would have to wait for another visit and a bigger travel budget.

Learn more about the lodge and view all room choices on its website or book a cottage on Booking.com which offers better cancellation terms.

  • An award-winning eco-lodge with moderate to above-average rates, depending on the season.
  • Location: On 250 acres along the west bank of the Macal River, just under a 30-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include 20 one-bedroom cabins that can accommodate one to six guests.
  • Activities: Black Rock Lodge offers many on-site things to do—such as river tubing, guided kayaking and canoeing, extensive hiking, and a full range of off-site activities.

Adjacent to 13,000 acres of protected land in Don Elijio Panti National Park, Black Rock Lodge, at the end of a 7-mile-long dirt driveway, is a resort apart. A stay here sets you away from it all in a jungle lodge abounding with guided hiking, birding, and river-based activities.

Choose from one of five cabin types on a hill overlooking the Macal River or the Black Rock Canyon and get an immersive nature and wildlife experience.

Learn more about the lodge on its website or book here .

  • An intimate eco-lodge with moderate to above-average rates, depending on the season.
  • Location: On 100 acres along the east bank of the Macal River, just over a 15-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include ten one-bedroom cabanas that can accommodate two to four guests.
  • Activities: Table Rock offers similar on-site things to do as other lodges—such as jungle walks, canoeing, and a full range of off-site activities.

At just over a 15-minute drive from San Ignacio and a 10-minute drive from Macaw Bank , Table Rock is another small highly-rated lodge with ten eco-friendly cabanas, some of which can accommodate up to four guests.

Like the other river lodges, Table Rock offers on-site self-guided or guided activities such as canoeing, jungle walks, birding, and night walks. Families will love Sammy’s Play Park with swings, a slide, and a playhouse.

Learn more about the lodge on its website or book here .

  • Upscale jungle lodge with moderate to above-average pricing, depending on the season.
  • Location: On 20 acres along the west bank of the Macal River, a 20-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include 21 rooms that can accommodate one to six guests.
  • Activities: Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge offers on-site things to do—such as jungle walks, kayaking, canoeing, and horseback riding, and a full range of off-site activities.

Staying at Sweet Songs means you can explore the 20 acres of the lodge grounds or stroll the nearly 80 acres of additional combined pathways crisscrossing next-door Belize Botanic Gardens   and beyond this—a tropical forest with trails.

This lodge has a beach along the river and offers an infinity pool. Another perk—it provides guests the chance to get closer to nature by staying in a jungle treehouse that can accommodate two people—the more luxurious ones are for adult guests only.

  • A full-service jungle lodge with moderate to above-average rates, depending on the season and lodging unit booked.
  • Location: On 73 acres along the east bank of the Macal River, an almost 25-minute drive from San Ignacio.
  • Accommodation options include 15 one to two-bedroom suites that accommodate one to six guests.
  • Activities: Mystic River Resort offers on-site things to do—such as exploring jungle nature trails, canoeing, river tubing, and a full range of off-site activities.

Perched above the Macal River, the Mystic River Resort, a mile up the road from Macaw Bank , offers 15 well-appointed one or two-bedroom suites, some of which have river views and private plunge pools or outdoor showers.

Take advantage of the swimming pool, on-site spa, and guide service that will help make your jungle stay easier and even more relaxing.

  • Affordable jungle lodge with inexpensive rates.
  • Location: On 21 acres near the east bank of the Macal River, a just over 15-minute drive from San Ignacio and in the village of Cristo Rey.
  • Accommodation options include 18 units that can accommodate one to six guests.
  • Activities: Crystal Paradise offers on-site things to do—such as walking the nature trails, birding, and a selection of off-site activities.

In addition to the lodges listed above, know that as you anticipate your daily Belize trip budget creeping up as you schedule one must-do activity after another , realize that you may need an additional lodging option to keep trip costs down—Crystal Paradise offers a great alternative.

An approximate 15-minute drive from San Ignacio in the village of Cristo Rey and near the east bank of the Macal River, this affordable and well-rated eco-lodge with 18 no-frills though nicely-laid out units on 21 acres is often favored as a place to stay by birders and should be on your keep-the-costs-down shortlist . In addition, expect amply portioned home-cooked meals at more budget-friendly prices.

3 Additional Nature Lodge Recommendations

If staying on or near the Macal River is not essential, and your budget has room to breathe , consider booking a stay at one of these three dreamy high-end nature resorts close to the town of San Ignacio or within reasonable driving distance.

Ka'ana Resort

Ka’ana Resort is a six-minute drive from the town of San Ignacio. It is a small luxury resort with 17 units that have upscale furnishings, private plunge pools, and butlers. Although it is not on the river, it offers a tropical garden setting that may make you overlook that you are not listening to the soft sounds of water whoosh past. Expect premium pricing and personalized service. Find more info and book here .

Blancaneaux Lodge

A 40-minute drive from the town of San Ignacio, Blancaneaux Lodge —one of the six Coppola (as in the famous filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola) family “hideaway” luxury properties—is tucked away in the hilly terrain of Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve. At its higher altitude, instead of being surrounded by jungle, you will enjoy beautiful vistas, hiking trails, waterfalls, and cave exploration while you stay in one of 20 luxe cabanas or villas. Find more info and book here .

Gaïa Riverlodge

Also, in the Mountain Pine Ridge area, consider a stay at the highly rated Gaïa Riverlodge , which offers beautiful waterfall views across a river valley. Stay in one of 16 well-appointed cabanas. Find more info and book here .

Belize Jungle Lodges and Belize Resorts

The best belize jungle lodges and resorts.

Jungle lodges and resorts in Belize offer visitors the unique chance to explore the hidden wonders and beauty of the jungle while relaxing in comfort and style.

Belize is a natural wonderland of both gorgeous offshore tropical island and lush jungle scenes bursting with colorful wildlife. In particular, the mainland of Belize is popular with travelers with lots of exciting activities to enjoy including bird watching (more than 500 species have been recorded in Belize), zip lining, horseback riding, learning about flowering plants (including orchids, the national flower of Belize), and spotting wildlife such as monkeys, giant iguanas, jaguars, and tapirs.

More than a third of Belize’s interior is set aside as protected nature reserves or natural parks, and the local Audobon Society has designated no fewer than seven areas as Important Bird Areas ideal for spotting birds in the wild. Other popular attractions in the jungles of Belize include exploring ancient Maya city-states, including the vast complexes of Xunantunich and Caracol that once vied with Tikal (just across the border in Guatemala) for dominance of the region.

This Barrier Island in Florida Gets 360 Days of Sunshine a Year — How to Plan the Perfect Visit

Clearwater Beach, Florida, is home to a Hollywood-famous dolphin, a world-renowned sand castle festival, and, of course, beautiful beaches.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

With 360 days of sunshine per year, powder-white beaches, and turquoise waters, Clearwater, Florida, makes for an ideal beach vacation. Located just west of Tampa and north of St. Pete, the under-the-radar cultural mecca has long drawn a mix of residents from around the world with its robust public transportation system and low cost of living, plus warm year-round temperatures, access to barrier islands, extensive bike trails, and of course, beaches.

Travel + Leisure turned to Amanda Payne, president and CEO of Amplify Clearwater and resident of Clearwater since 2015, to find out what makes this city a worthy beach vacation destination. “I love living in a place where people want to vacation — we have great schools and a fantastic quality of life where you can see famous musicians perform over the water, build sandcastles in the soft sugar-white sand, meet rescued marine animals, and stand on the shore casting a line while looking down through the crystal-clear waters and seeing to the sandy bottom,” she said.

Andrew Beltz, owner and managing partner of Stay & Play Clearwater Beach , told T+L he has lived in many beach destinations around Florida , but Clearwater holds his heart. In 2012, he relocated here for work and loves the mix of tourists and residents from around the globe. When asked what drew him to Clearwater, he said, “The public transportation with the Jolly Trolley is phenomenal — you can go from here to St. Pete Beach with stops at five or six beaches in between. Everything on the island is walkable and so accessible.”

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a rescue, rehabilitation, and release facility, is home to a Hollywood-famous dolphin, along with other marine animals.
  • The Market Marie has more than 100 vendors selling everything from handmade ceramics to homemade dog biscuits.
  • Hit Palm Pavilion to sink your toes in the sand while sipping on their famous Rum Runners.
  • Spend the night on the custom-built houseboat at Stay & Play, where you can grab a complimentary kayak and explore the diverse marine environment.
  • Stop at Pier 60 to catch the sunset festival where local artisans, street performers, and musicians toast the fiery ball descending over the water every night.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Opal Sands

Sandpearl Resort

Nestled on a white-sand beach, Sandpearl Resort 's 253 guest rooms and suites offer panoramic views of Clearwater, Mandalay Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico. The property has a 700-foot stretch of private beach, water sport rentals, a zero-entry lagoon-style pool with cabanas, a full-service spa, and a kids’ club where little ones can enjoy nature walks, arts and crafts, and scavenger hunts while parents enjoy some time off. Payne loves to bring guests to their on-site restaurant, Caretta. She said, “Many places serve stone crab, but this spot does it best. When on vacation, I don’t order seafood because Clearwater has spoiled me.”

Opal Sands Resort

Opal Sands Resort is home to 230 waterfront guest rooms and suites where the beach and sand are the show. But there's also a full-service spa, three restaurants and bars, and a zero-entry Gulf-facing pool with cabanas and tropical beverages. Beltz said, “[This property] is perched on the southern tip of Clearwater Beach and you can see all the boats coming in and out of the harbor. Their tiki bar, Sandbar, is my number one spot to catch a beautiful sunset, with 180-degree views and live music. You can watch the chefs making pizzas, catch a game, and the atmosphere is so relaxed.”

Stay & Play

A little further north and out of the bustle sits Stay & Play Clearwater Beach . Here, two restored mid-century properties contain 13 one-bedroom bungalows and studio suites, many with kitchenettes and water views. But for the best water view, Payne suggests staying on the custom-built houseboat. She also appreciates all the activities on offer, including parasailing, jet ski island tours, and luxury golf cart rentals. A lush courtyard connects the buildings and features a gazebo, eclectic seating vignettes, and a television to catch your favorite show outdoors. Or, grab one of their complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, or beach cruiser bikes to explore Clearwater Beach.

Best Things to Do

Clearwater marine aquarium..

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) operates on the “rescue, rehab, and release” model. If you’ve watched "Dolphin Tale," you’ve seen the work being done by this nonprofit marine rescue center. Both the original and sequel are based on true stories of rescued dolphins Hope and the departed Winter. Visitors can explore the world of rescued dolphins, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, and more through educational presentations, animal care experiences, eco boat tours, and exhibits. Payne added, “The work they do is paramount to the community. We need to protect the most endangered animals in our oceans and they do a great job educating the public about its importance.”

Water Activites

Payne and Beltz recommend getting out on the water, whether jet skiing, parasailing, or fishing. Beltz loves Salt Cracker Charters for deep-sea fishing where you can scout for grouper. After a day out casting lines, you can dock at the fish camp and get your catch cleaned and cooked. Another option is an Dolphin Island Jet Ski Tour . The 90-minute guided tour takes visitors to three nearby islands while gliding through dolphin pods and learning about the delicate ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico.

The BayCare Sound at Coachman Park

A band shell built in Coachman Park in 1957 started this venue's storied history. In 2023, it became The BayCare Sound , where a slew of high-profile musicians have taken the stage. Payne noted, “The waterfront venue has a playground, a splash pad, and an amphitheater where I’ve seen acts like Diamond Rio and Alabama. As an '80s baby listening to them on the radio, I never imagined I would see Diamond Rio in Clearwater overlooking the ocean.” In addition to the eclectic musical lineup, a selection of food trucks, mobile bars, and concession stands offer food and drink options while enjoying the shows.

Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise

For 40 years, Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise has sailed the seas surrounding Clearwater. The two-hour cruise includes complimentary lemonade, punch, beer, wine, water gun battles, treasure hunts, face painting, pirate stories, a cannon firing, and more. According to Beltz, it's not to be missed, especially if you have kids in tow.

Hogan’s Hangout

If you remember Hulk Hogan, a wrestler who captured television screens with his feats of strength throughout the '80s and '90s, Hogan’s Hangout delivers the nostalgia. Beltz likes to belt it out at the Monday night karaoke, where you might catch sight of Hulk Hogan, Dennis Rodman, or one of the many other celebrity drop-ins. The winner, of course, gets a championship belt, just like a professional wrestler. There's also a restaurant, a bar, live music, TVs for sporting events, and plenty of kitsch from Hogan, a longtime Clearwater Beach resident.

Best Shopping

The market marie.

Every second Saturday of the month, Coachman Park comes alive with The Market Marie . More than 100 artisans and produce vendors line up from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., with live music playing throughout the venue. Payne loves to shop the collection of small local businesses selling everything from art and soap to candles and some of the best produce around.

Sunsets at Pier 60

Two hours before sunset every night, Pier 60 fills with local artists, street performers, psychics and tarot readers, local bakers, and clothing tents for the ultimate artisan shopping experience. Beltz counts this as a must-stop when in town, “The Pier lines up with umbrellas selling local crafts, jewelry, live music, and sometimes movies in the park. There are family activities, local food and drink booths, and you get the backdrop of the sunset over the water every night.”

Best Nightlife

Shephard’s beach resort.

If you're looking for late-night entertainment, Shephard’s Beach Resort has two venues open to the public and overlooking the white-sand beaches. Tiki Beach Bar & Grill lines up daily live music on their concert stage right on the water until 1:30 a.m. on weekends. Wave Nightclub offers two levels of pumping DJ set lists surrounded by a laser show to dance the night away, or at least until 2:30 a.m. on weekends.

Reefers Social Club

This locally owned and operated hot spot is Beltz’s favorite for a late-night cocktail. On the first Thursday of every month, a gathering of record-loving patrons bring their favorites to Vinyl Club to spin tracks and enjoy great music while sipping on Reefers ' inventive libations.

Fusion Cigar Lounge

There's always something going on at Fusion Cigar Lounge . Beltz loves the chill vibe and choice people-watching here on Mandalay Avenue, “It’s a relaxed place to hang, watch a game, and catch the activity going by,” he said. Expect a wide selection of cigars, from Davidoff to locally hand-rolled sticks, to accompany the extensive spirit and wine selection.

Best Restaurants

Island way grill.

When Payne has visitors, she steers them to Island Way Grill for fresh seafood caught daily. “You can't go wrong with a place that has its own fishing fleet,” said Payne. Opt for one of their specialties cooked over an open oak and citrus fire pit, like the black grouper with charred pineapple salsa, or indulge in a selection of freshly rolled sushi. The walls are filled with local art and the sunset views are fiery.

Palm Pavilion

Family-owned since 1926, Beltz and Payne think Palm Pavilion is the perfect end to a day at the beach where you can keep your toes in the sand and grab some tasty grub. There's live music most days and the sunset comes free with dinner. Beltz added, “They have a delicious blackened grouper sandwich and killer wings (get the mango habanero) to satisfy your hunger after a day on the sand.” Grab a Palm Rum Runner, their signature cocktail, to toast another day in paradise.

Clear Sky Cafe

Located in the heart of downtown Clearwater on Cleveland Street, Clear Sky Cafe is one of Payne’s go-to picks. The global menu includes favorites like Korean barebecue ribs, lamb burgers with tzatziki, and African curry. But Payne always orders the same thing — the Mexican street corn salad: “I'm a creature of habit and I just can't get away from that blackened chicken and charred corn salad,” she said.

The Bait House

Opened in the 1940s, Beltz loves The Bait House for its low-key dive atmosphere. It serves locally caught seafood, homemade chowders, fish tacos, and an assortment of beer and wine. Beltz typically goes for their signature dish — the drunken shrimp, which is sautéed in a creamy bourbon creole reduction and served with toasted ciabatta bread. It also sells bait and tackle, runs fishing charters, and tells salty tales of Old Florida.

Blinkers Beachside

When Beltz is in the mood for a great steak in an upscale atmosphere, he heads to Blinkers Beachside . The locally owned restaurant serves lamb chops, prime rib, and Beltz’s favorite: the bone-in ribeye with truffle cream. It also has a selection of seafood and pasta dishes, and a Blinkers Beachside menu of smoked cocktails.

Best Time to Visit

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

The best time to visit Clearwater is during its shoulder season — early spring or late fall when schools are back in session, crowds are smaller, and prices are at their lowest. Payne let us in some not-to-be-missed events that occur throughout the year. She recommends visiting in April for the Sugar Sand Festival , during which Pier 60 transforms into a playground for 16 professional sand sculptors from all over the world. There are also free sand sculpting classes, live music, fireworks, artisans, food vendors, and more. November brings the Chalkful of Taste festival to Pier 60. This showcase of local culinary talent features 30 to 40 restaurants from around Clearwater serving bites, live music, entertainment, craft and local brews, chalk artists, and fireworks.

How to Get There

When flying into Clearwater, you have two airport options: Tampa International Airport (TPA) and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE). Payne loves TPA for its easy navigation, the wealth of flights available, and the fact that it's only a 25-minute drive to Clearwater. PIE has some advantages, though, with direct flights from unexpected places like Clarksburg and West Virginia, as well as servicing carriers that offer economical fares like Allegiant and Spirit. PIE is also slightly closer to Clearwater, at just 20 minutes away by car. Both airports have all the major rental car counters, and Payne’s favorite shuttle service, Way2Go Rides , runs to and from both airports.

Areas to Visit

Just across the bridge from bustling Clearwater Beach sits the relaxed Sand Key . Payne loves this quiet getaway, which includes Sand Key Park, a 95-acre minimally developed beach and park. The park’s nature trail and salt marsh attract many species of seabirds while loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beach from May through October. Amenities include bathrooms, changing rooms, outdoor showers, and a concession stand.

Caladesi Island State Park

According to Payne, if you're looking for beautiful views and plenty of space to spread out, Caladesi Island State Park is the place. Although it's normally reachable only by passenger ferry or boat, at low tide, you can walk to the state park from Clearwater Beach. The undeveloped, natural barrier island has the usual state park amenities like restrooms, showers, and a concession booth with food and drinks for sale plus equipment rentals such as kayaks. The 650-acre island also has a 2.5-mile trail that passes the site of the early 1800s Scharrer family homestead and is a stop on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail .

Honeymoon Island State Park

Known for its four miles of unspoiled white-sand beach and clear, calm water, Honeymoon Island State Park is a barrier island that can be reached by car. The entrance is located at the end of the causeway in Dunedin and visitors will find showers, restrooms, a cafe selling food and drinks (including alcoholic beverages), and a concession that rents bicycles, kayaks, beach chairs, and umbrellas. There are paved pathways and an interior nature trail that offer views of a virgin slash pine forest. The Rotary Centennial Nature Center has an elevated observation deck to admire the views and exhibits that teach visitors about the history of Honeymoon Island and nearby Caladesi Island.

Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor 's First Friday on Main Street is a big draw for Payne. She loves wandering the brick-lined street, enjoying the live entertainment and checking out the vendors selling local arts and crafts. There's also the Tocobaga tribe’s temple mound on the waterfront, natural springs, and the Folly Farm Nature Preserve to explore in this charming small town, which lies just about 30 minutes from Clearwater Beach.

How to Get Around

According to Payne and Beltz, there's no need for a rental car to get around Clearwater Beach. The 2.5-mile barrier island is walkable, but you can also use Way2Go Rides . For 10 years, the company has been shuttling people up and down the beach in golf carts and other vehicles. It provides shuttles from both airports plus has an on-demand service that runs seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. for a flat $10 rate.

Payne and Beltz both lauded the Jolley Trolley , a “concierge on wheels” that runs seven days a week along the coast, with stops in Clearwater Beach, Downtown Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs. As a bonus, all Jolley Trolley pass holders can ride the entire Pinellas County bus system because passes are interchangeable.

Beltz said if you want to rent a bike, the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is a 75-mile route stretching from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg, with connections to Palm Harbor, Dunedin, Clearwater, Safety Harbor, Largo, Seminole, South Pasadena, and Gulfport. Beltz added, “I live a block away from the route and have biked it many times. It’s nice to shoot down to Dunedin, which is just a 10-minute ride and has an awesome downtown with shops, restaurants, and galleries. It also runs along the coast, so you get a beautiful view for your ride.”

Places to Stay In and Near Yellowstone National Park: The Best Cabins, Hotels, and Lodges

By Emily Pennington

23 Places to Stay In and Near Yellowstone National Park

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Yellowstone National Park  is the birthplace of “America’s best idea,” the first national park in the world, and routinely one of the most-visited in the country. The park itself sits atop a highly active supervolcano and is home to the highest concentration of geothermal features on the planet (think powerful geysers, steamy hot springs, and bubbling mudpots). It’s also a fantastic place to spot charismatic megafauna in the wild—wolves, grizzly bears, and bison all reside here.

With so many spectacular sites, it’s no wonder that in-park lodging, including camping, can fill up  six months to one year in advance . Plus, these historic sites often lack the soothing spa treatments and luxe creature comforts that many travelers look forward to after a day of hiking and geyser gazing. Luckily, there are still plenty of options if you’re looking for places to stay in Yellowstone—close to the park and full of great amenities.

Below, you’ll find a list of our all-time favorite Yellowstone National Park lodging hubs and vacation rentals, from gorgeous  glamping sites  to rustic resorts to secluded cabins.

Top places to stay in Yellowstone at a glance:

  • Best for families: Paradise Lodge near Yellowstone
  • Best for views: The Cargill-Earl Guesthouse
  • Best for skiing: Hotel Terra Jackson Hole
  • Best affordable stay: Bridger View Bunkhouse

Spectacular spots in Thailand for a truly memorable trip

I f you’re considering a trip to Thailand, it’s likely you’re feeling a little spoiled for choice. Far more than a beach paradise (although it certainly ticks that box with ease), the Land of Smiles can serve up bustling city adventures, testing jungle treks, wellness retreats and foodie escapes with ease. Whether you want to head North for a culture-soaked sojourn, to Koh Samui for an island escape, to seek out the temples in Bangkok or simply to flop on the best-looking strips of sand, we know the location for you.

Here, discover the most beautiful places in Thailand, from the gateway island escape to some lesser-known hideaways.

Where to go in Thailand, according to a long-time traveller

For a weekend in the city: bangkok.

Bangkok is not a city for the faint-hearted: from the humid climes to the non-stop moped traffic, it’s a city that requires both energy and enthusiasm.

But come prepared (that’s comfortable shoes, a proper hat and a decent night’s sleep) and there is so much to discover in this vibrant city.

On weekends, brave the rabbit warren of Chatuchak market (go early to skip the crowds and the heat) and hunt for designer vintage treasures hidden amongst the 15000 market stalls, or head to Chinatown’s Yaowarat road to traverse the miles of gold traders and street-food vendors. Looking for something more cultural? The Grand Palace is one of the most spectacular Buddhist temples in the country, sensitively maintained and glimmering gold beneath the sun.

The stay: Mandarin Oriental

The oldest hotel in Thailand, The Oriental first opened on the banks of the Chao Phraya river in 1876 and, after being bought by the Mandarin group in the 1970s, remains the most prestigious place to stay in the city today. Ask for a room in the Author’s Wing, part of the original 19th century building, where each suite is named after a past literary guest.

For jungle treks and food markets: Chiang Mai

An hour’s flight north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand, offering a serene contrast to the beachy Southern regions. Many come for the elephant sanctuaries (which can indeed be wonderful, but be sure to do your research to find an ethical option), and to delve into the country’s rich history and enduring Lanna heritage. Time-honoured temples, jungle treks and national parks are all on the cards here, as is a fantastic food scene for those unafraid to get stuck into a string of dishes on the side of the road. (Do as the late Anthony Bourdain did, and look for the lady in the cowboy hat at Chang Phueak Gate night market).

The stay: 137 Pillars

Chiang Mai isn’t the place for flopping into a five-star resort, with most visiting for a few action-packed days before recovering on the beaches. But that doesn’t mean a stylish stay is off the cards: opt for 137 Pillars, which honours the traditional Lanna architecture while working in modern (and truly luxe) touches, such as a slender swimming pool and well-kitted gym.

For the best beaches: Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is considerably trickier to reach than the popular islands of Samui and Lanta (the flight-taxi-speedboat trifecta takes up a whole day) which means it’s generally visited by those serious Thailand travellers who have ticked off the obvious spots and are in search of something that feels more secret.

Indeed, a trip to Lipe is something you’ll be talking about for some time: this truly paradisiacal island is dubbed the ‘Maldives of Thailand’ for good reason. Here, expect homespun cocktail bars, casual BBQ restaurants and some of the most jaw-dropping beaches in the country, with shallow shores and spectacular snorkelling spots. Don’t pack for an evening dress code – there is nowhere here that requires a high heel – and remember to throw in a few good books, as Lipe is really all about the reclining.

The stay: Idyllic Concept Resort

On hippy-centric Lipe, pristine sandbanks are flanked not by high-rise hotels and mega resorts, but lowkey properties designed around the natural landscape. The most luxurious is Idyllic, which is situated on a coveted spot at the end of Sunrise beach (early risers will be rewarded). The rooms are modest yet modern, with beachfront villas available, and there are two pools: one for lapping, and the other with a swim-up bar.

For family-friendly fun: Koh Samui

Koh Samui is perhaps the most well-known of the Southern Thai islands, situated in the Gulf next to Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao. Served by its own airport, it’s an easy hour’s flight from Bangkok, yet the atmosphere is worlds apart from the bustle of the city. Development has been rampant on Samui, and there’s now a multitude of luxury resorts to choose from, while the nightlife of Chaweng beach and restaurants of Fisherman’s Village are there should you fancy a livelier libation.

The stay: Six Senses

Set into the hillside on the Northern edge of Samui, Six Senses is the kind of otherworldly retreat that instantly makes you feel deliciously free from the stresses of real life. It’s a taxi drive away from the crowds of the main tourist beaches, and offers both privacy and incredible ocean views (which you can gaze at smugly from your own private infinity pool). Be sure to reserve a table at Dining On The Rocks for a quiet, memorable dinner on a platform perched over the ocean.

See our verdict on the very best Koh Samui hotels here.

For a peaceful retreat: Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta, situated on the Western coast and easily accessible from the mainland at Phuket or Krabi, is one of the quieter islands, offering a true sense of castaway escapism. The beaches to the north are the most built-up (although they’re still beautifully chilled out) while the south of the island is where you’ll find the best resorts and most beautiful views. Lanta isn’t packed with tourist attractions or Western restaurants – families after ease and entertainment may want to consider Samui instead – but anyone after a week of rest and relaxation will be in their own personal paradise.

The stay: Pimalai Resort and Spa

Set into the snaking hillside of Lanta’s southerly Kantiang Bay, the Pimalai resort offers the most striking panoramic views of the Andaman sea (with a virtually private stretch of sand to boot). Here, you’ll feel immersed in nature, with villas built around the thriving tropical flora and fauna. Sure, you can rent a paddleboard, play tennis, complete a PADI diving course or borrow a bike to explore the island, but we think a day best spent involves a long, lingering trip to the award-winning spa, where massages take place under the palm fronds, soundtracked simply by the breeze.

For island hopping: Krabi

Situated on the West Coast of the mainland, just south from tourist hotspot Phuket, is Krabi: a cliff-framed province known as a jumping-off point for some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches. There are over 100 tiny islands just off the coast to explore, including Maya Bay: the idyllic jungle-framed shore made famous by Danny Boyle’s The Beach.

The Stay: Ritz-Carlton, Phulay Bay

After a long day island-hopping, the incredibly luxurious Ritz-Carlton in Phulay Bay is exactly the kind of place you’ll want to return to. Built sensitively around the verdant flora and fauna, you'll feel fully immersed in the tropical landscape, while the infinity pool is the perfect place from which to gaze out at the Andaman sea.

For luxe retreats and loud nightlife: Phuket

Phuket is the largest of the Thai islands, and the most developed. Fuelled by its own international airport, meaning you can fly directly without stopping in Bangkok, it's an island of two halves, where the main Patong beach is framed by dozens of 'walking streets' packed with bars, nightclubs and heaving seafood restaurants. That's not to say you're in for a week of sleepless nights, though (unless that's what you're seeking) as Phuket is truly an island of two halves. Super-luxe resorts abound on this sprawling sandy paradise, meaning you can stay as far – or, as close – to the action as you desire.

The Stay: Rosewood Phuket

Anyone who has stayed at a Rosewood property before will know to expect the very best. This Thai hideaway is a pristine example of the hotel group's attention to detail: situated beachfront on the picture-perfect Emerald Bay, it sensitively works around the landscape with architecture that truly brings the outside in.

Whether you're searching for unspoilt sand or incredible street food, we know just the place. Here's where to go and what to do in Thailand in 2024.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. Red Square Red Square free

One of the world's most famous public squares, the Red Square sits at the physical center of Moscow and is considered the symbolic center of all of Russia. Bluntly speaking, Red Square is a must-see in the city. Allot a decent amount of time to take in the views, capture them on your camera and to just soak in the atmosphere of the place.

You'll find the Red Square is bordered by the massive GUM shopping mall on the east, St. Basil's Cathedral on the south, the State Historical Museum on the north and Lenin's Mausoleum on the west.

Tretyakov Gallery Tretyakov Gallery

Many say the Tretyakov Gallery features the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. This museum is filled to the brim with masterpieces ranging from the 11th century to the 20th century. The gallery is actually comprised of two buildings, often referred to as the "Old Tretyakov" and the "New Tretyakov."

If you make time for only one museum in Moscow, make sure it's this one. Frommer's says, "This collection of masterpieces awes both newcomers to Russian art and connoisseurs." With works from Russian icons like Vrubel and Kadinsky dotted throughout the museum, you could easily find yourself whiling away the whole day here.

St. Basil's Cathedral St. Basil's Cathedral

St. Basil's Cathedral, also known by its much longer title as the Cathedral of Intercession of Theotokos on the Moat , is the most iconic landmark in Russia. It's located in Red Square , immediately recognizable by its unique bonfire-style design.

Built in the mid-16th century under the orders of Ivan the Terrible himself, (a popular legend says he had the architect blinded to prevent him from duplicating the beauty) St. Basil's Cathedral is most known for its vibrantly colored onion domes. Frommer's says the cathedral is "essentially a union of nine different churches and styles, and nine different chapels, beneath nine domes, each unique in size, form, and color."

Cathedral of Christ the Savior Cathedral of Christ the Savior free

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is located along the bank of the Moscow River and only a few blocks away from the Kremlin . Tourists come to the cathedral for its impressive architecture and design, as well as for its equally impressive (and strange) history.

The cathedral was originally built to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812 and to honor the soldiers who gave their lives fighting him. Then in 1931, Stalin had the structure dynamited to make room for his Palace of the Soviets project -- an ambitious skyscraper (it would have been the tallest structure in the world) that never materialized. Instead, the site was transformed in 1958 into the Moscow Pool, one of the largest public swimming pools in the world. The pool closed in 1994 and the cathedral was rebuilt in its place in 1997.

Moscow Kremlin Moscow Kremlin

Often referred to simply as "The Kremlin," this fortress is located in the center of Moscow, off of the Red Square . It is the most well known of the Kremlins (Russian citadels) and serves as the official residence of the Russian President. The Kremlin encompasses four cathedrals, four palaces and a number of towers.

One of the major highlights here is the Armory Palace, one of the city's oldest museums. The Armory Palace was originally the royal Russian arsenal where weapons were produced and stored. It wasn't until the early 1800s that it was converted into a museum. Now, it showcases Western European, Asian and Russian weapons and armor, as well as several collections of work from goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewelers. Don't miss the Fabergé egg exhibit.

Lenin's Mausoleum Lenin's Mausoleum free

Lenin's Mausoleum is located in Red Square and is probably one of the stranger tourist attractions you'll ever come across. It contains the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin, a disturbing site that has been on display almost every day since his death in 1924.

Lonely Planet says, "Whether for the creepiness value or an interest in mummification, the granite tomb of Lenin is a must-see, especially since (if some people get their way) the former leader may eventually end up beside his mum in St Petersburg." Apparently, the Bolsheviks leader made a specific request to be buried alongside his mother before he died.

Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is located on Volkhonka Street across from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior . It houses the largest collection of European art in Moscow, and it was named in honor of one of Russia's premier poets, Alexander Pushkin.

You don't go here to read sonnets, though. Instead, you should look to find art spanning a wide range of eras and movements, from ancient Greece to the Renaissance to French Impressionism. Masterpieces from the likes of Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso and Van Gogh easily make this museum deserving of a visit.

Once his business in North Korea is wrapped up, Vladimir Putin will quickly be on the move to Vietnam, where he is scheduled to visit for the next two days.

The country is preparing to host the Russian leader, who is expected to arrive later tonight in Hanoi.

Pictures from the country show seamstresses making Russian flags that will line the streets and a motorcade during a security rehearsal near the Hotel Metropole, where Mr Putin is expected to stay.

Vladimir Putin has been photographed driving Kim Jong Un around in a luxury Russian-built Aurus limousine during his visit to Pyongyang today.

The Russian leader presented Mr Kim with a limousine, a tea set and an admiral's dirk, a type of dagger, according to Russia's state news agency TASS.

Mr Putin's visit, which comes as both nations face international isolation, is being watched closely by Seoul and Washington, which have expressed concern about their growing military ties.

Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have signed a new deal today that includes a vow of mutual aid if either country is attacked.

The agreement, which the leaders said covered areas including security, trade, investment and cultural and humanitarian ties, could mark the strongest connection between Moscow and Pyongyang since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

Both leaders described it as a major upgrade of their ties.

During their meeting today, Mr Kim said: "The relationship between our two countries is at the highest point and incomparable to relations between the DPRK and the Soviet Union."

You can watch what Mr Kim said about the Russian leader's visit below...

Kim Jong Un has described the new deal struck between North Korea and Russia as "peaceful and defensive".

Mr Kim has spent today hosting Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang where the two held lengthy talks.

The Russian president said world affairs and the global agenda dominated the pair's conversation.

Mr Kim described his Russian counterpart as "the dearest friend of the Korean people", saying that "at this moment, when the whole world is paying close attention to Pyongyang, where the friendship mission from Russia has arrived, I stand with Russian comrades - our most honest friends and comrades".

Earlier, North Korea rolled out the red carpet for Mr Putin upon his arrival, with a welcome ceremony in Pyongyang before the two leaders exchanged lavish gifts (see 9.41am post).

Mr Putin later laid a wreath at a monument to soldiers of the Soviet Union who died liberating the Korean Peninsula from Japanese occupation.

A former CIA analyst has branded Vladimir Putin's trip to North Korea as "pretty pathetic".

The Russian president has had the red carpet treatment in Pyongyang as he holds talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

One of the key outcomes of the trip is a new agreement signed between the two nations that vows to protect each other in the event of invasion.

For Sue Mi Terry, a former CIA analyst who is now a director at the Wilson Center thinktank, Mr Putin's visit to Pyongyang highlights how two "pariah states" are cementing their ties despite their isolation from the international community.

"I think it is pretty pathetic that Putin has to resort to relying on [the] 198th-ranked economy in the world to help his war effort," she told BBC News.

"It's all around bad news for the rest of the world."

By Nicole Johnston , Asia correspondent, in Beijing

Anytime Vladimir Putin leaves Russia it is significant because he rarely gets out. But this trip - visiting the secretive and closed off country of North Korea for the first time in 24 years - underscores just how important the relationship between these countries has become.

Russia and North Korea have signed a strategic partnership to upgrade their relationship. While it's light on detail this deal will be closely watched in Asia, especially here in China.

China shares a long border with North Korea - it's been the hermit kingdom's main supporter and is responsible for 90% of North Korea's trade.

Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, also has a strong relationship with Russia, buying its oil and gas and sending so-called "dual use" machinery and semi-conductors to Russia, which the West says Russia uses in its war in Ukraine.

China does not want to see Russia muscling in on its traditional area of influence in North Korea.

Just yesterday, senior officials from China and South Korea held talks in Seoul, where China said maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula is in the common interest of all parties.

Mr Xi does agree with Russia and North Korea on one point, however - that there should be a new world order, a "multipolar" world, rather than the US-dominated international system.

The problem is, China wants to be at the centre of this alternative order and seen as a responsible global leader. It risks reputational damage if the multipolar bloc appears to be largely comprised of countries the West regards as pariah states, such as Russia, North Korea and Iran.

South Korea is also anxious about Mr Putin's trip to Pyongyang.

It could embolden Mr Kim to have a strongman by his side at a time when tension on the Korean Peninsula is high. Both North and South Korea have stepped up their campaigns of cross border harassment in recent weeks.

Mr Putin next heads to Vietnam, which has a different set of issues. Vietnam is emblematic of a Southeast Asian country trying to stay close to the US, Russia and China. It doesn't want to be forced to make a choice.

But in this fractured international environment, divided between the West and developing countries of the "Global South", Vietnam and its neighbour may find that eventually they will have to pick a side.

The North has been sending balloons with rubbish across the border, and activists in the south have sent balloons with propaganda leaflets.

It benefits both sides. The US says Russia receives shipments of artillery shells and ballistic missiles from North Korea. Mr Putin and Mr Kim deny this.

In return, Russia sends North Korea food, fuel and technology.

Drone attacks by Russia have damaged energy infrastructure in central Ukraine and injured at least two people in the western region of Lviv, the authorities have said.

Emergency services were sent to the sites of the attacks and repairs to damaged electrical equipment in Lviv are under way, Ukraine's energy ministry said on Telegram.

Russian forces launched five drones at Lviv, injuring two men, who were hit by debris, according to regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi.

It was part of a wider drone attack launched by Russia last night (see 9.10am post).

The attack in the village of Malekhiv in the Lviv city district damaged a block of flats, as well as scores of windows in other residential buildings, mayor Andriy Sadovyi wrote on Telegram.

The attack also damaged a veterinary drugs research institute, Mr Sadovyi said.

Sky News could not independently verify the reports.

Russia and North Korea have signed a new agreement, vowing to help each other in case of invasion as both face escalating stand-offs with the West.

"The comprehensive partnership agreement signed today provides, among other things, mutual assistance in the event of aggression against one of the parties to this agreement," Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying by state news agency TASS.

Mr Kim called Russia "the most honest friend and ally" and referred to Mr Putin "the dearest friend of the Korean people", according to a report by state agency RIA.

The agreement, which replaces previous treaties between the countries from 1961 and 2000-2001, includes a mutual defence clause under which each country agrees to help the other in case of attack.

Yuri Ushakov, a Russian presidential assistant, said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

The UK must strengthen its armed forces to deter the "new axis of tyranny" in the world, the defence secretary has said.

Grant Shapps shared a video on X of what he called North Korea's "bizarre" welcome ceremony for Vladimir Putin, which included a military orchestra, artillery guns firing a welcome salvo and a red carpet for the two leaders to walk down.

The Russian president is in Pyongyang for talks with leader Kim Jong Un.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un have exchanged gifts on the Russian president's visit to North Korea.

Mr Putin reportedly gave his host a Russian-built limousine, a tea set and an admiral's dirk, a type of dagger.

In return, Mr Putin was given various works of art depicting himself, including busts, according to Russia's state news agency TASS.

The Aurus Senat limousine began production in 2018 after Mr Putin personally tasked his country with having its own take on a luxury car.

According to the firm's website, the limousine is the "first luxury car from Russia", and represents the "renaissance of Russia’s industrial, scientific and technological potential".

It's fully armoured - not surprising given Mr Putin uses one - and uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbo hybrid V8 engine.
