15 Best Day Trips from Buffalo, NY

Buffalo is upstate New York’s most famous city, with its proximity to the USA side of the spectacular Niagara Falls and its almost equivalently important claim to fame – the invention of buffalo wings.

It’s an excellent base for travellers and a very pleasant destination in itself, with leafy parks and a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Erie.

Avail yourself of the plentiful excellent hotels, restaurants and bars in the City of Good Neighbours, and then make sure to explore more of the state and across the border into Canada with these fifteen brilliant day trip options.

1. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

A list of day trips from Buffalo would hardly be complete without mentioning its most famous nearby attraction, Niagara Falls.

Whether you want to ride on the Maid of the Mist boat, or simply observe from afar at the Observation Tower, nobody is going to deny that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see nature’s splendor in full force.

Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Goat Island and the Whirlpool are just some of the highlights of this magnificent waterfall.

You can also head over to the Canadian side and check it out from there, if you feel like exploring a slightly different option.

2. Ellicottville

Allegany State Park

At just over an hour from Buffalo, the town of Ellicottville is a fantastic day trip option, especially for sport and nature lovers.

It’s got hiking and biking trails galore, as well as a local ski resort, and the town itself is a pleasant place to wander around.

Head to nearby Allegany State Park for some challenging hikes and round the day off with a splash in the lake.

Or perhaps head over to Holiday Valley Resort for a spot of golf.

For a less active option, you can also visit the famous Salt Cave.

3. Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park, New York State

Another great option for nature enthusiasts is the fantastic Letchworth State Park, which has the accolade of being the number one state park in the country.

There are so many ways to explore this place, with hiking trails criss-crossing the valleys, horseback riding on offer, and even cross country skiing in the right season.

The “Grand Canyon of the East” has so many picturesque spots that it would be hard to see them all in a day.

Perhaps a balloon ride from the company Balloons over Letchworth is your best option if you really want to get an overview.

4. Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes

Wine lovers, this is the day trip for you.

The Finger Lakes region is known for its excellent vineyards, as well as, of course, its many lakes and other bodies of water.

Sprawling over 124-000-acres, Finger Lakes will certainly not disappoint in terms of available activities; it’s got everything you could think of, from kayaking and fishing to swimming.

If wine is more your thing, you’ll still have plenty of options to choose from; there are more than 100 wineries spread out across the area.

There’s also an up-and-coming restaurant scene to be explored.

Downtown Toronto

Buffalo is actually closer to Toronto than New York City itself, making this an excellent option for a trip away for the day.

Shopping, wining and dining are the most likely ways to while away your day in Ontario’s capital – it has great options for all three.

All the way from high-end designers to local brands, you’ll find something to suit you in the malls, and Toronto is a modern city full of great restaurants.

Don’t miss a trip up to the top of the CN tower, either, it’s considered one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions.

6. Old Fort Niagara

Old Fort Niagara

Located in Youngstown, New York, Old Fort Niagara has been a site of important military history for more than 300 years.

Head north from Buffalo to get there, towards the shoreline of Lake Ontario.

The fort was built by the French in 1726, but has endured frequent battles for possession, switching hands between the French, British and Americans throughout history.

The War of 1812 saw the British win out, but at the end of that same war the Americans took it back.

It’s a great spot for history lovers and an impressive construction even for those who have limited interest in military affairs.

7. Chautauqua Institution

Chautauqua Institution

The Chautauqua Institution provides day trippers with a more intellectual diversion.

An educational center located near the picturesque Chautauqua Lake in the southwest of New York State, Chautauqua hosts events centered on spiritual growth and intellectual discussion.

You can head to the amphitheatre to take in a show, or simply stroll around the grounds of campus soaking in the atmosphere.

It’s a tranquil place to spend a few hours of reflection.

8. Niagara-on-the-lake

Niagara-on-the-lake

If you’ve seen the Falls before or you just feel like a day trip that’s a little different, then instead of heading straight there, take a detour to the charming tourist town of Niagara-on-the-lake.

Located across the border in Canada, there are so many things to divert your attention here, from excellent wineries to lovely bike trails along the Niagara River.

If you’ve timed your visit right during summer, you might also get the chance to hit the Shaw Festival – named after George Bernard Shaw – which celebrates theatre.

9. East Aurora

East Aurora

Located just south of Buffalo is the fascinating Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, home to a dynamic art colony.

The village prides itself on being the home of the Arts and Crafts movement, a direct reaction to the mass production of the Industrial era, and the products made there are simple, beautiful and handcrafted.

There are fourteen buildings spread across the historic campus, so be sure to take your time looking around.

10. Darien Lake

Darien Lake

As New York’s largest water and theme park, Darien Lake is a brilliant day trip option from Buffalo, especially for those with a young family.

Its seven different rollercoasters will be the kids’ highlight, but there are bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and heaps of other rides to keep their attention throughout the day.

It’s really a no-brainer, children love it and adults love the excuse to be children for the day.

There’s also a Performing Arts Center next door, which has concerts that might be worth checking out if the kids somehow get bored of the rides.

11. Corning Museum of Glass

Corning Museum of Glass

Perhaps a surprising entry on a list of day trips is the Corning Museum of Glass, but it genuinely is a highlight of the area.

People come from miles around to see the spectacular exhibits displayed here, with information on the history, art and science of glass making, as well as demonstrations of how some of the pieces on display are made.

Marvel at the artistry of the craft through the many intricately designed show pieces, and perhaps visit the gift shop for a small souvenir of your trip.

If you feel that you haven’t had enough museums for one day, you can head over to the Rockwell Museum of Western Art nearby, which has a range of exhibits displayed on both Native and Western American art.

12. Presque Isle

Presque Isle Lighthouse

Another excellent family-centered day trip destination are the picturesque sandy beaches of Presque Isle, located on the shores of Lake Erie.

The peninsula is located around a two-hour drive from Buffalo, but it’s well worth the journey, with a multitude of recreational activities on offer, from swimming and boating to hiking, biking and bird watching.

Most equipment is available to rent, and a popular option is to take the kids out on the kayaks.

It will be a long day, but a very enjoyable one.

13. Griffis Sculpture Park

Griffis Sculpture Park

A unique blend of art and nature can be found in Griffis Sculpture Park, located just 45-miles from Buffalo.

Get out into the fresh air and hike along the park’s many miles of trails while marvelling at more than 250 huge sculptures – many of which can be climbed on and interacted with.

More than 400-acres of exploration through meadows, ponds and hiking trails will tire the kids out, and the artistry of the sculptures provides more than enough entertainment for the adults.

14. Rochester Museum of Play

Rochester Museum of Play

A fantastic rainy day option can be found in the Museum of Play in Rochester, New York State’s third largest city.

There are interactive exhibits a-plenty, featuring ever-popular characters from Sesame Street to America’s favourite comic books.

Explore the nation’s favourite toys in the Hall of Fame, or hop on the carousel or the passenger train.

Rochester itself has some great dining options to enjoy once you’ve had your fill of the museum’s exhibits.

15. Toronto Islands

Toronto Islands

If you’ve already visited the city itself, Toronto Islands provide something a bit different for your day trip needs.

Catch a ferry over and take your bike if you have one; there’s no motorised transport on these islands.

You can walk, bike and boat your way around (bikes can be rented if you don’t have your own), and there’s also a popular little amusement park.

Pack a picnic to have after you’ve explored the sandy beaches that fringe the land, spotted the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse and had a look at Far Enough Farm.

Darwin D. Martin House

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Darwin D. Martin House is one of the must-see attractions in Buffalo. Located in a lovely residential area on the edge of Delaware Park , this house is considered one of Wright's finest prairie houses and one of his greatest accomplishments from the first half of his career.

The complex, which includes six interconnected buildings, was designed and built between 1903 and 1905. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark. Some of the complex was demolished, but over the past two decades extensive restoration and reconstruction has brought the property back to life, and the efforts are still ongoing.

All visitors are required to tour the house in a group lead by a knowledgeable docent.

Canalside

The area, the former terminus of the 1825 Erie Canada, includes a lovely park, with Adirondack chairs and benches looking out over the canal, and a walkway along the water's edge. In summer, a number of events are held here, and the schedule is posted in advance online, so you can see what's coming. Each winter, a huge outdoor skating rink is built nearby.

Along one side of this area is Harborcenter, with shops and a few restaurants, and in behind is the KeyBank Center hockey arena. If you are arriving by boat, you can dock at Canalside on a first-come, first-served basis.

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

Olmsted's 155-acre South Park, created in the late 1800s, is home to more than 2,000 plants and trees. The unique glass, wood, and steel design was based on the famous Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens Palm House in England.

The indoor gardens include a fully restored palm dome and an impressive fern house. Year-round highlights include the orchid house, bromeliad house, herb collection, and waterfall. Some of the plants are native to the area, but most are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Beat the Winter Blues with these Weekend Trips from Buffalo

Sometime around the beginning of February, when winter seems like it will never end, Buffalonians are ready for a change of scenery. These winter weekend getaways can be reached in just a few hours on the road or in the air. They may not have warm weather, but they do have plenty of activities to help you beat the winter blues!

Get away from Buffalo with a weekend trip to one of these destinations:

Cleveland, Ohio

Distance from Buffalo: 3 hour drive Classy jazz bars, the house from  A Christmas Story , great brunch and one of the country’s best art museums are just a few of the things that welcome weekend visitors in Cleveland. Bundle up and brave the cold for a walk through Public Square or along the Hope Memorial Bridge.

Corning, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 2.5 hour drive Of course, the Corning Museum of Glass is great all year round. There’s also the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, and galleries and restaurants within the Gaffer District. Cross-country ski along the Finger Lakes Trail for some fresh air.

Detroit, Michigan

Distance from Buffalo: 1 hour flight It’s easy to forget how close Detroit is to Buffalo. A one-hour flight makes this city a great Midwest winter getaway. Ice skate, check out one (or two, or three) of Detroit’s many museums and enjoy awesome brunches.

Ellicottville, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 1 hour drive You could spend the entire weekend skiing at Holiday Valley Resort and recovering from a day on the slopes in front of cozy fireplaces. There are also breweries, shops and spas to help you enjoy a weekend away.

Letchworth State Park, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 1.5 hour drive The cabins at Letchworth State Park are open year round. Take a weekend to unplug, hike and take in snowy scenery. Snowmobilers are also welcome in some areas of the park.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Distance from Buffalo: 3.5 hour drive There are a few ski resorts not far from Pittsburgh, so Buffalonians looking for new slopes might enjoy making the trip to Pittsburgh. This city has some unusual museums (Bicycle Heaven, the Roberto Clemente Museum and the Bayernhof Museum), and lots of breweries and coffee shops to explore in the cold.

Providence, Rhode Island

Distance from Buffalo: 3.5 hour flight While most cities have great libraries, the Providence Athenaeum is especially gorgeous. Wander through the shelves after hitting a coffee shop and before heading to the Federal Hill neighborhood.

Rochester, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 1.5 hour drive While Rochester doesn’t seem like much of a winter getaway, there’s enough to do downtown to keep you busy for a weekend. The George Eastman Museum, garbage plates and tons of coffee shops are waiting just an hour down the Thruway.

Toronto, Canada

Distance from Buffalo: 2.5 hour drive Head to Canada’s biggest city for tons of entertainment options. You’ll forget all about the cold when you’re shopping at St. Lawrence Market, taking in the history at Art Gallery of Ontario and bar hopping in the Kensington Market neighborhood.

Kleinhans Music Hall was the dying wish of both Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans, who passed away within three months of each other in 1934. The couple, who had made a small fortune with a high-end clothing store, made a bequest in their will "to erect a suitable music hall … for the use, enjoyment and benefit of the people of the City of Buffalo." Just about six years later in 1940, the Kleinhans Music Hall debuted with a concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic. Since then, a number of big names have performed in the Hall's three auditoriums, with acts ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Ben Folds.

One TripAdvisor user says that Kleinhans is "one of the best performance halls in the world!" going on to say that all of the seats offer great views of the stage and that the acoustics are excellent.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House Complex Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House Complex

Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright called this complex of structures he designed in the early 1900s for New York businessman Darwin D. Martin "the opus," believing it exemplified his prairie house architectural ideal. More than a century later, the organic architecture has been rebuilt to its former grandeur and continues to enchant guests who come from all around to view the "domestic symphony," as Wright called it. The structures include the main house, the pergola, the conservatory, the carriage house and the Wisteria Museum Shop.

Visitors really appreciate the wealth of information that the docent-led tours provide. One TripAdvisor user calls this complex a "fabulous venue," recommending that visitors take the two-hour tour: "[It's] well worth the extra dollars to see all the rooms on the property."

If you want a little Broadway on your Buffalo vacation, look no further than Shea's Performing Arts Center. Opened in 1926 as a venue for silent films, the center hosts touring Broadway troupes and other special events. Several decades ago, a group of community leaders saved the building from destruction by getting it listed on the National Historic Registry. Today, the theater continues to be renovated, but even still, the interior is pretty magnificent — you'll see a sea of plush red seats surrounded by a lavish stage and a richly colored ceiling.

One TripAdvisor user recommends stopping by the theater even if you don't have time for a show: "Just take a look at the stage and facilities ... You'll think you stepped into a theater in Paris. It's over the top ornate and a true gem."

Home to the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres, the First Niagara Center is also a performance venue for groups like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and singers like Justin Timberlake. The center can seat more than 19,070 for hockey games, and when the center is rearranged for concerts and other events, it can seat even more.

One TripAdvisor user is very succinct in his comments about the First Niagara Center: "Free parking within a quarter mile, easy to get to third level on escalators, nice scoreboard, average food, currently a bad hockey team." Another TripAdvisor user was a bit more complimentary, saying: "This was our first time there and we were impressed by the layout of the seating ... even the bad seats were good."

Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park

The Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park is a must-do for those interested in military history (or those with kids who like big boats and helicopters). The park contains two ships, a submarine and a handful of helicopters, plus a number of well-designed exhibits on everything from POWs to Marine Corps memorabilia.

One TripAdvisor user says that the park was definitely worth the $10 admission price: "Explore navy ships, and take a step back in time. … Overheard two kids 8 or 9-ish saying how cool it was."

Ralph Wilson Stadium Ralph Wilson Stadium

Buffalo is a big sports town, and the National Football League's Buffalo Bills are one of the city's most beloved teams. The Bills hurl the pigskin over at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and their fans aren't fair-weather. Even though they've made it to the Super Bowl four times, the Buffalo Bills have never pulled through for a win. But the fans still love them, and that shows in the stadium.

"Well no matter what the Buffalo Bills are ranking the fans definitely know how to show their support," said one TripAdvisor user. "We had a great time tailgating and being amongst fans." Others highlight the good food and fairly affordable tickets and parking rates. A smaller number criticize the craziness of the crowd, citing too much alcohol.

Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo

The Buffalo Zoo's starring attractions are two polar bear cubs called Luna and Kali. In addition to these cute little fur balls, the zoo houses a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The eco-rainforest exhibit is a hit with visitors; many people say that the rope bridge across the exhibit offers a great view of the turtles and alligators below.

Opening its gates back in 1875, the Buffalo Zoo is the third-oldest zoo in the country. As such, there are continuing renovations to the zoo that some visitors have found disappointing. Another TripAdvisor user praised its improvements: "It is amazing how far along the zoo has come over the years. There had been so many new attractions and exhibits and it looks like a world class zoo." Others were even more complimentary of the venue, citing its great staff and happy-looking animals.

What are some other things to do around Niagara Falls?

Below is a list of some other attractions near Niagara Falls:

  • Niagara SkyWheel
  • Journey Behind the Falls
  • Skylon Tower
  • Maid of Mist & Cave of Winds

Did you know that you can hike around Niagara Falls? There’s a fantastic hike here called the Goat Island Scenic Trail . As you might expect, it’s a waterfall hike (I mean, you are surrounded by great falls, after all!) and it offers its own unique scenery and beauty. The trail is paved so it’s easy to navigate, especially if there are multiple generations and/or physical abilities in your group.

I’m looking for some of the best day trips in Buffalo for children.

Some of the best day trips in Buffalo for children include:

  • The Buffalo Zoo
  • Buffalo AKG Art Museum
  • Tifft Nature Preserve
  • Letchworth State Park

Buffalo is a great place for children, and there is a wealth of attractions dotted all over the area that entertain, educate, and inspire. For starters, there is the Hidden Valley Animal Adventure Park. Located in Varysburg about an hour away from Buffalo, it is an awesome 60-acre animal safari park with over 400 wild animals, some of whom visitors can interact with like the zebras and giraffes. Hands-on, interactive activities can also be enjoyed right in town at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Here, kids and their adult companions will find exciting exhibits featuring wildlife, the planets, ancient civilizations, and so much more.

Where can I find a weekend getaway spot near me?

There are lots of great weekend getaway spots in Western New York. Lake Placid is one of the most famous and well worth the journey. It’s beautiful all year round but people really love it in the winter months for enjoying some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the state. In Allegany, one of the most popular places to visit is Allegany State Park where you can enjoy camping, hiking, bird watching, biking, and between late June and mid-July the phenomenon of the synchronous fireflies. The latter is a truly amazing treat! It's when, during the firefly mating season, the two species congregate, and the males light up the night in an attempt to attract the females. It’s a light show unlike any other!

Sampling Some of Buffalo’s Best

by Christa Glennie

Every time I take visitors on a tour of the Queen City , as I have almost 100 times, I am filled with quiet gratification when their eyes widen at the unexpected: the tucked-away and beautiful Wilkeson Pointe beachfront park, our jaw-dropping collection of world-class architecture, the lush urban farms east and west of the downtown core, sumptuous restaurant meals and a modern art collection that wows from the outside in.

From the lowbrow to the highbrow, the modern to the historic, there are a myriad of ways to experience Buffalo. For me, its facets are as familiar as a comfortable pair of jeans. Yet, by the day, they manage to thrill me anew. Try my favorite short course itinerary.

3 to 5 P.M Art Sets Us Apart

Buffalo’s art scene experienced the equivalent of a seismic jolt when the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (the former Albright-Knox Art Gallery) reopened its doors after an extensive campus expansion and restoration project, creating a more accessible and engaging home for its collection of modern and contemporary art. With 50,000 square feet of exhibit space now at its disposal, the curatorial staff finally has room to show off the breadth and depth of what is widely considered one of the great collections in North America, with extraordinary work by masters spanning the last 160 years of art history. But the art is only part of the show. A new Town Square features Common Sky, a sculptural installation that serves as a canopy overlooking the activity in the restaurant, book shop and a variety of spaces that are home to interactive experiences — including a Lego room created in a first of its kind partnership with the toy company — designed to be inviting, inclusive and a catalyst for community engagement. Plan to be dazzled.

Across the street, on the campus of Buffalo State, you’ll find the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. It specializes in art with regional connections and is named in part for Charles E. Burchfield, the inventive 20th-century watercolorist who spent much of his life in Buffalo. He is best known for his transcendental, mystical interpretations of landscapes and street scenes. The museum has the largest public collection of his work. In an interplay of pieces from its archives, works by local artists and select items on loan, it stages immersive, savvy and memorable exhibits.

6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Lucky You, It’s Happy Hour!

Check into your lodgings, change for dinner and head downtown to Lucky Day Whiskey Bar at 32 Pearl St. Built around the turn of the last century as a Freemason’s temple, its sexy, dark atmosphere is an ideal backdrop for its well-curated selection of spirits, beer and wine. Lucky Day, with its beautiful, polished bar, is an excellent spot for a classic cocktail. Here, strict adherence to standards, sans fluff, is refreshing. Barkeeps are friendly without being intrusive, making it easy to pull up a stool whether you’re alone or with others.

7:30 to 9:30 P.M. Save Room for Dessert

Three seasons a year you can easily walk the quarter-mile from Lucky Day to Marble + Rye at 112 Genesee St., even in heels. The restaurant is modern and highly Instagrammable, but you’ll forget to take pictures once the drinks and food begin to arrive. Bar manager Megan Lee offers one of the most nuanced, intellectual, vibrant cocktail menus I’ve ever seen. Her informed, food-friendly wine list matches fare that is hyperlocal, made from scratch and consistently delicious. The menu reads simply, but anything served by chef and owner Michael Dimmer has gone through an intense series of trials before making the list. Order with confidence. Whatever you do, save room for ice cream! The sweet side of the M&R menu never disappoints.

When the plates are cleared, consider staying for a drink and bar chatter. Or, walk down Genesee towards East Huron Street and the beautifully lit Electric Tower and Roosevelt Plaza. Have a nightcap close by at the Graylynn Gin Bar at 537 Main St. or Fattey Beer Company at 5 Genesee St.

8 to 11 A.M. Coffee, Breakfast and a Farmer’s Market

Early birds should seize the chance to stroll through one of Buffalo’s bustling farmers markets. First, grab a breakfast sandwich and house-roasted coffee at Remedy House , 429 Rhode Island St., in the city’s eclectic Five Points neighborhood. Find killer cinnamon rolls and apple cake within the quirky and cozy brick environs of Five Points Bakery , 44 Brayton St. Nearby, Butter Block , a precision-driven patisserie, crafts the best croissants in the area at 426 Rhode Island St.

Then head a few blocks north to the Elmwood Village Farmers Market on Bidwell Parkway. Locavores, chefs and home cooks come early for the best selection of produce and prepared goods. Everything sold must be handmade or grown locally. Most everything is extraordinary.

From here, explore the Elmwood Village. Or follow Lincoln Parkway to the very walkable Rumsey Woods section of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Delaware Park at Rumsey Road. Soak up some nature, jog a little or wander to nearby Hoyt Lake and rent a vessel in the Buffalo Maritime Center’s whimsical and sturdy fleet: A pink flamingo, aka FLOATmingo, paddle boat or a rowboat can usually be had in the warm weather months, May through October.

1 to 3 P.M. Tour an Architectural Masterpiece

Nestled into the city’s pastoral, tree-lined Parkside neighborhood at 125 Jewett Parkway, visitors will find the Martin House , one of Buffalo’s Frank Lloyd Wright originals. Delve into its history, feats of engineering and stunning details. Book a tour with a docent or try an audio tour.

Head back to your lodging to rest and refresh before dinner and a night on the town.

7 P.M. Small Plates, Big Experience

North Buffalo is a sweet neighborhood with deep Italian roots mixed with a complement of the new. The Little Club , at 1197 Hertel Ave., is a congenial place to experience some of each. Meet people of all ages, discover wines and enjoy delectable small plates and satisfying entrées. Restaurateurs Tommy and Mary Lombardo offer guests understated sophistication stitched with a warm, familial vibe.

After-Dinner Drinks

Allentown is the place to be after dark. This bohemian, artsy neighborhood is a registered National Historic District known for embracing quirk, culture and anything offbeat. This Buffalo 101 itinerary requires that you visit haunts like the dog-eared music venue Nietzsche’s , at 248 Allen St., and one of the greatest dive bars of all time, the Old Pink , at 223 Allen St. Try the best steak sandwich ever. Be ready. Buffalonians customarily welcome out-of-towners with convivial big-heartedness—and shots!

11:30 A.M. Join the Brunch Bunch

Sleep in, check out of your hotel and head downtown to Toutant , at 437 Ellicott St. Louisiana-native and chef James Roberts shares his low-country version of Sunday breakfast with homey shrimp and grits, hearty biscuits and gravy, barbecue hash and hot mugs of chicory-blend coffee. Best known for its fried chicken dinner, also served at brunch, Toutant’s pastry is an unsung hero. Its outrageously good cinnamon roll is a sweet undertaking best shared by the table at the top of the meal.

places to visit within 3 hours of buffalo ny

Sunday afternoon is a perfect time to head out on the Buffalo River on a kayak, paddle board or waterbike, or take a Buffalo River History Tour. You can also rent a bike from Reddy Bikes and jump on the Bike Ferry which will take you to the Outer Harbor where there are miles of trails along the water’s edge to explore. If you’d like to see more of Buffalo’s industrial heritage, make a detour to Silo City. Once home to Buffalo’s flour and grain milling industry, it’s being transformed into a multifaceted campus featuring apartments, sculptural installations, gardens and spaces for performing and visual arts. Stop in at Duende where music is always on tap, along with a menu of light fare and cold drinks. It’s a quintessential Buffalo spot to cap off your visit. Cheers.

Once it starts to get into the evening, travelers should head to Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant for the remainder of their evening. That would be a perfect day in Buffalo, New York.

Q: How Does Buffalo Compare With Syracuse, NY?

Both cities offer something a little bit different to travelers, but for those looking for big attractions like Niagara Falls or exploration of the Great Lakes, Buffalo offers a bit more. Syracuse, on the other hand, is a smaller city a few hours east, with better access to the Finger Lakes region and the Capital Region.

Q: How Does Buffalo Compare with Ithaca, NY?

These two cities are incredibly different. Buffalo is a large happening city with hundreds of thousands of residents. That is not the case with Ithaca. Ithaca is a much more quiet and more aesthetic city sitting right on the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York.

Buffalo is a busy place sitting on the doorstep of one of the natural wonders of North America. They are both great destinations, it just depends on what travelers are looking for.

Q: Is There Really Anything Else To See In Buffalo Other Than Niagara Falls

Yes, there is quite a bit to do in Buffalo than just going to see Niagara Falls. In fact, for many who visit the city often, Niagara Falls no longer appears on their itineraries. Buffalo is home to a great food scene, active outdoor events and venues, a bit of theater, and a great deal of passion for their sports. There is so much more to Buffalo than just Niagara Falls .

Pan Pizza Co on Union near William is excellent Buffalo style pizza & wings! Plentiful with fresh toppings is their standard. But for $1 you can also have toppings all the way to the edge of the pizza. Maybe I'll try that next time but I don't even know if it's necessary because you get way more toppings than we've come to expect from pizza, especially with post-pandemic price increases and quality reductions at some other places. This pizza has a slightly sweet sauce that is the perfect balance to the cheese and fresh crust. Now ... the wings ... I was leary about trying oven-roasted wings because I am a traditional Buffalo girl. But let me tell you - I could have wings this way from here to and LOVE THEM! They are delicious!! Huge fresh wings with excellent quality meat, seasoned perfectly. They have great oven char - there's nothing chewy or lacking from that great hometown wing feel & taste. We really enjoyed these wings. This is our second time and I can say we will make these a weekly trip. Bravo to Pan Pizza Co and their delicious pizza and wings! Thanks also to them for being incredibly affordable and happy to see all their locations are locally owned! Both Vinny and Oliviah who work at this location were great representations of this business- things like that really matter when choosing where to spend our money, and they were both so friendly, professional and you could tell they took pride in their product. And they should, because our meal was delicious. As far as interior of the business, it is impeccably clean and everything can be seen from the counter. The pizza oven where all the cooking magic takes place is a huge piece of equipment that reminds me of high temp ovens from Italy. I'm not sure if they are the same, but the high quality yield tells me they just may be. TRUST THIS BUFFALO FOODIE GIRL & DO BE SURE TO GIVE THIS BUSINESS A TRY SOON. 10/10 RECOMMEND.

If you’ve never seen a tribute act perform the songs of artists that are either too big to play in Maine or who have passed away, there’s a way to do a whole bunch of that this week in Portland.

There are also tribute shows happening in venues around the state all summer long.

A Strange Day is the Portland-based tribute to The Cure. Photo by Seth D. Warner

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single  “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the  Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

A Strange Day  8:30 p.m. Thursday. Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St., Portland, $12 in advance, $15 day of show, 21-plus. portlandhouseofmusic.com

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
