MTA service improvements are big plus for the riders

MTA service improvements in recent months have been a big plus to riders. The Train Time app is now very user-friendly and it is easy to navigate among the varied functions eg train time departures and arrivals, track numbers, train/train line status, ticket prices, best cost deal suggestions, and ticket purchases. Confusing graphics and ambiguous icons have been eliminated. The only issue is that the “window” for ticket purchases contains graphics that prominently display the icon for use of Apple Pay to make purchases which is clearly to the disadvantage of consumers. MTAs train service is very much improved insofar as on time service and absence of delays and sufficient numbers of train cars. Excellent improvements in the last few months have not escaped my attention. I’ve been an MTA rider on MNRR, subways and LIRR for 36+ years so I know when there has been a marked step up in general service.

Astoundingly well-designed! Is this a transit app?!

This can’t be a public transport app. It’s too well-designed. It’s like competent programmers were hired who had a wishlist of design ideas that they wanted to implement from using the MNR and LIRR, and then they actually got to implement it. I feel like user feedback may have also been not only sought out in the testing phases, but also *gasp* implemented. From matching up potential tickets to the train time all in one place to carriage occupancy estimates to showing you any schedule info you might not need (including for the train you’re on, which many apps seem to forget you might need for your post-train journey!), this app has it all. This is a fine example of excellent UX Design, and I wish I had some improvement suggestions, but nope! Keep up the great work.

Great app, occasional wrong track

Train Time is great for listing departure tracks at Grand Central, but can be inaccurate at stations farther out. At Southeast, NY, commonly, Grand-Central-bound trains depart from Track 2 and Wassaic-bound depart from Track 1. Fairly often, Metro-North’s operations people reverse these tracks, causing inexperienced Wassaic passengers to get on an electrically-powered train on Track 1 - listed as Wassaic on the Southeast departure screens and on Train Time as Track 1, both of which are wrong. An experienced commuter like me knows that only Diesel trains can travel north of Southeast. This is not a software bug. It is an operations error not to update the Southeast screens and Train Time when the tracks are reversed. I commute through Southeast only about once a week, and I have seen non-posted track changes like this occur twice in the same month.

MTA Launches New One Stop Rail App Combining LIRR and Metro-North Trip Planning and Ticket Purchasing

Train Time App

TrainTime App Combines Most-Used Transit Agency Apps in Country

Developed completely in-house, the new traintime features seat availability tracker, real-time train movement and in-app customer support, new app will ease transfers between metro-north and lirr when grand central madison opens this year, view high resolution app screenshots and photos from today’s news conference , view video from today’s news conference.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today launched a totally revamped app – named TrainTime – the new one-stop app for commuter rail customers in the region. The app replaces MTA eTix and adds the functionality of previously separate TrainTime apps for Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, merging ticket purchasing, trip planning, real-time train location data.

Access your tickets purchased in eTix using your existing account information — or create a new account using your Apple ID, Google account, or a text message.

Making the app easier and more inviting to use, TrainTime users can log in using their Apple ID, Google account, or a text message , and purchase tickets using Apple Pay. The se new features complement features that are already popular with MTA app users , including a seat availability tracking and in-app chat with customer service.

Nearly 50,000 people had downloaded the new app within the first 15 hours of its launch.

“For years the top request from customers has been to include a mobile ticketing option within TrainTime. We have delivered on that ask, while also providing great features,” said Metro-North President and LIRR Interim President Catherine Rinaldi . “Everything from seat availability tracking, reliable train-tracking and in-app support are all at a riders’ fingertips. I cannot thank our in-house development team enough for delivering on a project that riders from New Haven to Montauk can equally benefit from.”

“If we want more customers to return to the rails, the customer experience needs to be as frictionless as possible,” said Acting MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara . “ The new TrainTime accomplishes just that, placing every travel tool a rider needs into one app, regardless of which railroad they are riding. And the debut could not be timelier with LIRR and Metro-North also sharing Grand Central as a terminal in the very near future.”

“ TrainTime has a few MTA firsts along with becoming the largest transit agency app in the country: the long-awaited inclusion of ticket purchases, seamless login options and a real-time train movement map,” said MTA Head of Special Projects Will Fisher . “There are no passwords to remember, no card info to enter, and if a rider needs assistance, they can get help within the app. The consolidation also gives us flexibility for cross-rail trips once Grand Central Madison opens.”

Starting today, railroad customers can enjoy the following features:

Mobile Tickets on TrainTime

TrainTime is the first MTA app where ticket purchasing and trip planning live on the same app. Previously customers would have to use two apps to plan their trip—TrainTime to trip plan, and MTA eTix to purchase tickets.

Now, a customer can search for their train and purchase their ticket in seconds. When looking up their train, a “Buy” ticket button will appear on the screen. From there, a customer can log in using Apple, Google or their phone number and purchase their ticket. Once a ticket is purchased, customers will see the button show "Activate" as their departure time approaches, or “Wallet” if their trip is in the future .

Previous eTix users should use their existing account information to access tickets they have already purchased.

Real-Time Train Movement and Seat Availability Tracking

A core feature of the revamped app is the real-time train tracking map. In preparation for the app’s rollout, GPS sensors were installed on the entire LIRR and Metro-North fleet. When looking up a train a customer can get the exact position of their train in real-time. Once a customer gets on the train, they can continue to track their movement.

The real-time train tracking is complemented by the popular seat availability tracker that the LIRR initially debuted in 2020. A customer can check the exact position of their train while on the train, while also knowing their exact car number and monitor that car’s capacity.

In-App Customer Service

In addition to the many social channels , customers can already go to for assistance, TrainTime meets riders where they are, providing in-app chat with customer service representatives for both railroads for the first time. Users can "Chat with us" on the "Status" tab .

Cross-Rail Trip Planning

The debut of TrainTime allows for a future feature of cross-rail trips when Grand Central Madison opens later this year.

A customer that will travel from Long Island to Metro-North region, and vice versa, will be able to plan their full trip and purchase their ticket without having to use multiple apps .

MTA Unveils New All-In-One Mobile App for Trip Planning and Service Information

App includes schedules and service alerts for subways, buses, lirr and metro-north  , public can sign up for app; currently in beta testing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that its new MTA app is available for download. The app is currently in BETA testing and will eventually succeed the MYmta app. The app features schedules, service alerts and more for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad all in one place. Users can also book Access-A-Ride trips and see elevator and escalator outages at stations throughout the subway system.

“If we want more customers to use public transit, providing travel tools that are easy and intuitive is key,” said MTA Acting Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara . “The new MTA app accomplishes just that, connecting riders to the information they need in one or two taps.”

Additional features in the Beta version of the new MTA app include:

Plan a trip to see recommended routes and check schedules for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, PATH and AirTrain.

Get service alerts and see planned and unplanned service changes and best ways to get around.

Save favorite routes and stops for quick viewing of arrival times.

Live bus tracking to see where a bus is located that is approaching a stop, check when it will arrive, and follow it throughout its trip, including instant information on how many stops and minutes away a bus is.

Real-time on-board crowding for railroads.

Book Access-A-Ride trips, find pick up and drop off times for trips, and view trip history.

Improved search making it easier to see which search results are MTA stations and the services offered there at a glance.

Dynamic strip maps and station views indicate the service that is running at any given time.

The app was co-developed with Axon Vibe, a smart mobility platform provider and former winner of the MTA’s Transit Tech Lab accelerator. Utilizing this smart transit technology MTA app users will also be able to opt into sharing their location data to receive smart, real-time, location-based notifications for their individual journey.

The aggregated data will be available to the MTA to better understand ridership and mobility patterns around the New York metropolitan area. This information will assist with improving transit operations to meet the needs of customers and developing innovative tools to help make it easier for riders to plan for transit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This effort was supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

“Axon Vibe is thrilled to continue supporting the MTA with our smart transit technology, aimed at promoting sustainable travel and increasing public transit ridership,” said Roman Oberli, CEO of Axon Vibe .

The app will replace MYmta when it becomes available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store later this year. Riders will not need to download a new app as it will automatically update on a mobile device if MYmta is already installed.

Members of the public can sign up for access to the app here .

How to Ride LIRR

Last Updated: April 11, 2022

wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. To create this article, volunteer authors worked to edit and improve it over time. This article has been viewed 2,956 times.

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a commuter rail service that serves much of Long Island and parts of Queens and Brooklyn and surrounding suburbs. It is also much cleaner and more expensive than the New York City subway. This wikiHow will show you how to ride the Long Island Rail Road.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, masks are required on all forms of public and commercial transportation, including planes, trains, buses, ships, taxis, trams, and ride-sharing services.

Planning Your Trip

Step 1 Review the route map and find the stations nearest where you wish to go.

  • Peak fares are in effect from 6AM to 10AM heading towards New York, and from 4PM to 8PM heading away from New York. [2] X Research source

Step 4 Use route planning tools to plan your trip.

At the Station

Step 1 Go to the train station where you start your trip.

  • Parking is limited and fills up very early on the weekdays. You need to pay for parking at many LIRR stations.

Step 2 Buy a ticket.

  • One-way tickets are valid for one-time use only.
  • Round-trip tickets are valid for two uses.
  • Monthly tickets are valid for the duration of the month.
  • Seniors and persons with disabilities get discounted fares.
  • You mostly do not have to travel exactly between the stations printed on the ticket. For example, a three-zone ticket with Bayside and Penn Station printed on it is also valid between Auburndale and Woodside. Look at the zone numbers printed on your ticket and match it up to their fares chart to determine where you can travel to.

Step 3 Check for announcements on system-wide delays before entering the station.

Taking the Train

Step 1 Board the correct train for your destination.

  • You can pay onboard the train, but that is more expensive than getting a ticket before boarding.

Step 3 Practice good train etiquette.

  • Check for all your personal items before making your way to the door. Items left behind will make their way to MTA's lost and found. Lost items can be reported here .

Learning the LIRR: An NYC Guide for Travelers

lirr

Running from Long Island to Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the busiest commuter railroad on the continent. If you’re visiting New York City and plan to see Long Island, too, you’ll want to know all about the LIRR. As an NYC local, I’m here to help.

According to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), the LIRR is the oldest railroad in the country operating under its original name. Since it was originally chartered on April 24, 1834, the LIRR has served millions of New Yorkers. These trains transport over 300,000 people on any given weekday, and the system runs more than 700 trains.

Suffice it to say, these trains are busy, and if you plan to use them, you’ll want to be prepared. Read our guide to get the scoop.

How to purchase tickets

Long Island Rail Road

There are multiple lines of the LIRR that run throughout Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties. These trains can take you out to the Hamptons, to a concert at UBS Arena, and so many more places during your visit to New York City .

You may purchase your tickets from an MTA employee or a kiosk at one of the train stations. You can also use the MTA TrainTime app to purchase tickets directly on your phone. I like to use my phone so I can do it quickly and easily without having to deal with an unfamiliar machine or a person.

Local tip: While you can buy tickets on board the trains, they will be slightly more expensive. Buying in advance will save you some money!

Navigating peak and off-peak hours

LIRR

Peak tickets cost more money, so check the LIRR schedule to see if you’re traveling during peak or off-peak hours. The MTA charges peak fares during business rush hours on weekdays for trains scheduled to or from NYC terminals. Peak fares during LIRR business rush hours are:

  • 6-10 a.m. arriving in NYC
  • 4-8 p.m. departing from NYC

If you’re in New York for vacation and can adjust when you’re moving around in a more flexible way, try hopping on the LIRR during off-peak hours to save yourself money. Just know that the price can fluctuate.

To learn more about LIRR fares, check out the MTA website .

Where you can go on the LIRR

Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR can take you out to Long Island, obviously, which means you can get to the Hamptons pretty easily. While there, you can see the many lighthouses this beachy area has to offer. Spend a day sitting in the sand, if the weather’s nice, and browsing the boutiques.

Long Island is more than just the Hamptons, though. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Long Island Aquarium, especially great for families
  • Jones Beach State Park, with its 6.5 miles of sandy shoreline
  • Old Westbury Gardens, an early 20th-century mansion surrounded by 200 acres of landscaped grounds, lakes, and woods

Each of these can be found on Long Island. It’ll just take some navigating with the LIRR map and maybe some walking or buses.

Local tip: The LIRR will get you to and from the JFK airport (it’s technically on Long Island!), so you can plan to use one of these trains when you’re flying to NYC for your trip.

Which direction to travel on the LIRR to get to NYC

LIRR

Headed to NYC from Long Island aboard the LIRR? It’s easy to get there. Here are the steps if you’re on Long Island and going to New York City:

  • Choose Penn Station as your destination.
  • Wait for the train on the Westbound platform.
  • Get off at Penn Station (which is on 34th Street).

From there, you can explore all New York has to offer. Head uptown for Central Park and its many sights or head downtown and get on the boat to the Statue of Liberty and take a tour of history .

What about your return trip? If you’re leaving Penn Station and going to Long Island, then make sure you input the correct information into the kiosk or your app and wait on the Eastbound platform.

Keep your tickets

Once you purchase your tickets, make sure you hold onto them! MTA employees may or may not ask for them while you’re on board the train. Though there are times you might ride the train without your tickets being checked, it’s better to have them than to be caught off guard and forced to pay an elevated fee on the train.

Have the schedule handy

Check out the MTA LIRR website for the latest schedules. You can also monitor the schedules and get alerts on the MTA app. If you’re in a station, look for the monitors that tell you which route is on which line and when it’s leaving.

MTA's record $68B spending plan focused on maintenance, LIRR accessibility, new cars, electrification

plan my trip lirr

Accessibility upgrades at several Long Island Rail Road stations, groundwork for the future electrification of tracks to Yaphank, and enough new trains to retire the LIRR's 40-year-old fleet of M3 cars are all part of a five-year, $68.4 billion infrastructure spending plan released by the MTA on Wednesday.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials don't yet know how they'll pay for most of the plan, which focuses primarily on maintaining, rather than expanding, the existing transit system. Even as the transit agency wrestles with a projected $15 billion funding gap in its current capital budget created by Gov. Kathy Hochul's pause on congestion pricing, the MTA's chief said further investment is needed in a century-old system that, in many places, has "been left untouched and allowed to continue to decay."

"If the MTA system is going to survive, let alone grow and prosper, we're going to need to deal with that stuff," MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said at a Queens news conference where he unveiled the plan's price tag. "We get that $68 billion is a big number. But I'm confident that it's the right number."

The plan will go before the MTA Board for a vote on Sept. 25, then to a state review board for final approval by Oct. 1, according to agency officials.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • The MTA on Wednesday released its latest five-year capital program, which proposes to spend $68.4 billion on infrastructure investments through 2029.
  • The plan includes funding to buy 160 new electric train cars for the LIRR — enough to replace the railroad's fleet of 40-year-old M3 cars — to upgrade several stations and bridges, and to study, and potentially begin work, on further electrifying the tracks in Suffolk County.
  • The MTA says the state will likely have to create a new revenue stream to fund about half the proposed budget, even as it still hasn't figured out how to make up the $15 billion lost with the pause on congestion pricing.

The LIRR stands to get $6.05 billion, or about 9%, of the budget, with the biggest allocation — about $1.6 billion — going to the purchase of new rail cars. The 160 new M9-A cars would be enough to finally replace the railroad's 100 1980s-era M3 cars, which break down about seven times more often than newer trains, MTA officials said. The railroad also would purchase 40 "dual-mode" locomotives, which can operate on both electrified third rail power and on diesel, as well as diesel passenger coaches and work locomotives, LIRR president Robert Free said.

From breaking news to special features and documentaries, the NewsdayTV team is covering the issues that matter to you.

By clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy .

Several LIRR stations would be in line for upgrades under the plan, including Cold Spring Harbor, Port Washington, Floral Park, Patchogue and Mets-Willets Point, which would finally be made accessible for riders with disabilities.

Released every five years, the capital program previously has funded big-ticket efforts like the LIRR’s Third Track and the construction of Grand Central Madison. It again includes plans to expand the transit network, including through a $2.75 billion commitment for the design and construction of the Interborough Express, a new light-rail system linking Brooklyn and Queens, with a connection at the LIRR’s East New York station.

The plan also includes $800 million to study and potentially begin work on electrifying the LIRR’s Main Line from Ronkonkoma to Yaphank and to make unspecified improvements to the Port Jefferson and Montauk branches.

By not specifically addressing the potential to electrify the Port Jefferson branch, transportation advocate Larry Penner said the MTA is "punting" on a project that has been high on Long Island officials' priority lists for decades.

"Basically, if you're on the Port Jefferson branch, you're left stranded at the station, [as MTA officials] kick the can down the road another five years," Penner said in an interview.

Lieber said the MTA will "look at all" proposals to expand capacity on LIRR branches and will not "favor one over the other."

To address fare evasion, which costs the agency about $700 million a year, the MTA is proposing to spend $1.1 billion to install modern fare gates at 150 subway stations, replacing older turnstiles.

But how to pay for it?

MTA officials said they expect to be able to fund roughly half the plan by issuing bonds and through federal grants — leaving a roughly $33 billion budget gap that likely would require a new dedicated revenue stream from the state.

In a statement, Hochul said she will "fight to secure as much funding as possible" for the plan.

"That includes pressuring Washington to deliver additional infrastructure dollars and working with our partners in the legislature and City Hall to determine priorities and capacity during the upcoming budget negotiations," Hochul said.

Lieber said he expects funding for the plan to be addressed in the State Legislature's next budget. He expressed confidence that Hochul will come through on funding, even though she still hasn't figured out how to make the MTA whole after nixing a congestion pricing plan that the MTA was relying on to fund $15 billion in spending in its 2020-24 capital program.

The new plan assumes Hochul will make good on her promise to fund the remainder of the current plan, meaning that no projects included in it would have to be deferred to the new plan.

"I know that she understands the importance of what we're trying to do here, because the success of the transit system is totally intertwined with the success and affordability of the city and the region," Lieber said.

Transit advocates were less willing to give Hochul the benefit of the doubt.

"The problem is that with every day without congestion pricing, the amount Governor Hochul owes to the MTA for the current 2020-2024 capital plan grows," said Rachael Fauss, senior policy adviser for Reinvent Albany, a nonpartisan nonprofit group. "Governor Hochul’s transit math does not add up: The MTA cannot keep its system working without congestion pricing."

Congestion pricing, which would have charged most vehicles $15 for driving below 60th Street, would have generated $1 billion a year in tolls. Hochul has defended her decision to nix the plan, citing affordability concerns among New Yorkers, and vowed to come up with the money to fund all the remaining projects in the plan.

In a statement, Hochul spokesman John Lindsay said: “Gov. Hochul has stated repeatedly that she is committed to funding the MTA Capital Plan and is working with partners in government on funding mechanisms while congestion pricing is paused.”

The MTA 2025-2029 Capital Program By The Numbers:

  • $68.4 billion : Total proposed spending.
  • $35.4 billion : Identified funding, including bonds, federal grants and state and city subsidies.
  • $6.05 billion : LIRR's portion of total spending.
  • $1.57 billion : Spending on new LIRR train cars.
  • $1.2 billion : Spending on LIRR station upgrades.

5 Must-Visit Northeast Cideries for Your Next Fall-Foliage Road Trip

Fall colors only last a short time, so make the most of a leaf peeping trip by stopping at a few cideries in the Northeast for a delicious detour.

Food & Wine / Getty Images

Leaf peeping is one of autumn’s greatest delights, nowhere more so than in the Northeast of the United States. Fiery crimsons, buttery yellows, and outrageous oranges streak across the landscape. They transform forests into brilliant scenes that intensify as the air turns colder.

Another great autumnal staple can be just as delightful — drinking cider. Hard cider, one of the United States’ most beloved beverage traditions , dates to the colonial era and is produced in all 50 states. The New England region made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island boasts some of the most epic fall foliage routes in the world. Similar vibrance often extends into New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The area also happens to offer several cideries worthy of a detour.

“Leaf peepers come every fall,” says Stephen Wood, who co-owns Poverty Lane Orchards and Farnum Hill Ciders with his wife, Louisa Spencer, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. “The reason they come is that it is stunningly beautiful in the fall here.”

Wood has grown apples since the 1960s, and he’s made cider since the 1990s. He says the Northeast offers a unique opportunity to marvel in nature’s wonders. “It’s lovely here in the fall, and lovely in ways that other places aren’t,” he says. Crisp evenings and sun-filled autumn days make for perfect apple growing conditions.

“The Northeast is a classic, temperate climate — hot, bright summers; cool, crisp autumns; plenty of water; and cold winters,” says Autumn Stoscheck, owner and cider maker at Eve’s Cidery in Van Etten, New York. “Apples love it here,” she says, as evidenced by the millions of apple trees growing in the wild.

Whether you’re road-tripping through the Northeast this autumn for the views or brews, here are a few cideries to visit between vistas.

Absolem Cider (Winthrop, Maine)

Courtesy of Ben Macri

For the earliest start to the season, head north. “Apples are available starting in mid-August running all the way [until] the end of October,” says Zachary Kaiser, co-founder and cider maker at Absolem. However, wait too long and many farms run out of apples. “Oftentimes in New England, PYO [pick-your-own] can be finished by early November.”

Maine’s high latitude and rugged coast means leaf-peeping season can sometimes run for two months, often a full month longer than other lauded leaf locations. It also gives Maine-grown cider apples a nice acidic bite reminiscent of Western European white wines and Eastern European orange wines, says Kaiser. He suggests a high-acid or high- tannin cider, such as Absolem’s foraged apple-based Wendel, paired with Maine’s most famous culinary tradition: lobster rolls.

West County Cider (Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts)

If you’re driving east on Route 2 from Lancaster, Massachusetts, along the popular fall foliage road toward Turner’s Falls, continue 10 miles or so until you reach Shelburne Falls, home of West County Cider. The tiny farmhouse offers wine-inspired ciders grown and pressed locally. As delicious as they are, the surroundings are even more breathtaking. A panoramic view from the tasting room overlooks three states, and there are plenty of picnic tables and hiking trails to experience the full range of autumn color.

Eden Ciders (Newport, Vermont)

Courtesy of Ellen Mary Cronin

The trek up Vermont’s Route 100 is world-famous for a reason. The 216-mile road winds through the heart of Vermont and boasts some of the most breathtaking foliage, complete with classic scenes of covered bridges, barns, and rolling hills at every turn. Don’t rush the trip, but make an appointment for a guided tasting and tour at Eden Specialty Ciders’ Newport location. Its ice ciders are some of the best in the world, and they can help to take some of the crisp fall chill out of the air. If the trek to Newport, near the Canadian border, is a bit much, stop instead at Eden’s tasting room in Shelburne, shared with Iapetus Wines and Shelburne Vineyard.

Farnum Hill Ciders (Lebanon, New Hampshire)

Courtesy of Farnum Hill Ciders

Some ciders go big on agri-tainment during the fall, complete with tractor rides, apple cider donuts, and corn mazes. But Wood says at Poverty Lane Orchards and Farnum Hill Ciders, they’re apple growers first. Still, “people have a blast here,” he says. “We let [kids] run out into the woods, fall down, scrape their knees … we have a lot of people who love that.” The pet- and kid-friendly farm stand opened on September 7, so bring a picnic.

Eve’s Cidery (Van Etten, New York)

Courtesy of Autumn Stoscheck

Of the 11 Finger Lakes in New York, Cayuga Lake is both the biggest and serves as centerpiece of the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway, an 87-mile loop dotted with wineries and cideries. The western side features the Finger Lakes Cider Trail , a collection of farms, orchards, and cideries in the heart of apple country. Just south of the lake’s tip is Van Etten, home to Eve’s Cidery. Owner Autumn Stoscheck says apples in the Northeast “tend to have higher acids, softer tannins and a bit lower sugar levels than apples growing in warmer climates.” This allows makers like herself to create bright and acidic ciders with varieties like Golden Russet, Northern Spy, and Esopus Spitzenburg. “If you haven't discovered Northeast cider, you're in for a real treat,” she says.

7. Hippie Hollow Park

Despite this, many initially skeptical visitors are delighted to discover that they adore this relaxed spot, where nudity is by no means required. The park has friendly vibes and lovely views, so it's worth adding to your itinerary if you're not bothered by its clothing-optional status.

8. Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory

  • Address: 2210 South FM 973, Austin
  • Parking: Free parking available onsite

A wastewater treatment plant might not seem like the best place to enjoy top views in Austin, but you will be surprised at how delightful such an unusual destination can be when it involves Austin's Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory. Birdwatchers flock to this area, which attracts all kinds of shorebirds along with beautiful butterflies. This observatory links to the River Trail, which while being short, beckons bird enthusiasts to explore.

9. Barton Creek Square Mall

  • Address: 2901 South Capital of Texas Highway, Austin
  • Parking: Extensive onsite parking available in the shopping mall lot

Barton Creek Square is home to typical shopping stores and chains such as Macy's, Nordstrom, Old Navy and the like. Visit on a Saturday to check out the adjacent Barton Creek Farmers Market, where you'll find an abundance of fresh produce, along with kombucha, chocolate and even live music.

10. Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls

  • Address: 3918 South MoPac Expressway, Austin
  • Parking: Free parking available at the dedicated Sculpture Falls lot

Austin is home to many lovely waterfalls — and with the right hike, you can view two within a single expedition. A top section of the Barton Creek Greenbelt will bring you to Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls, which are equally spectacular. The falls themselves are remarkable, but the beauty of this experience also lies in the lush forest and dramatic rock walls. This experience is both scenic and fun, as you can take a refreshing dip in the swimming hole.
