We’re more than a week away from Pokémon Day, the annual celebration of the Japanese release of the original Pokémon games and with it, the English debut of Pokémon Horizons: The Series . The upcoming season will be the first in the series to star characters other than Ash Ketchum since the anime first premiered all the way back in 1997.

Western audiences still have some time before we meet Liko and Roy, the protagonists of Pokémon Horizons , who will pick up the baton from Ketchum in the wake of his championship victory at the end of last year’s Pokémon Ultimate Journeys. In the meantime, why not take a stroll down memory lane and revisit the earlier seasons of the anime before the latest entry? We’ve broken down a list of all the services where you can watch all 25 seasons of the original Pokémon anime.

Pokémon: The original series (1997-2002)

Seasons 1-5: Indigo League, Adventures in the Orange Islands, The Johto Journeys, Johto League Champions, Master Quest

Where to stream: Netflix (first half of season 1); the Pokémon add-on channel on Prime Video or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon (second half of season 1, season 2, season 3, season 4, season 5)

The series that started it all! Aspiring Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum ventures out from his hometown of Pallet Town to explore the Kanto and later Johto regions with his electrifying partner Pokémon Pikachu, earning Gym badges and capturing other Pokémon in his quest to become the very best, like no one ever was. Along the way, Ash teams up his friends Misty and Brock and faces off against Team Rocket members Jessie, James, and Meowth.

Ruby and Sapphire arc (2002-06)

Seasons 6-9: Advanced, Advanced Challenge, Advanced Battle, Battle Frontier

Where to stream: Freevee , the Pokémon add-on channel on Prime Video , or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon

The Ruby and Sapphire arc of the Pokémon anime saw Ash leave behind the Johto region (along with his allies and Pokémon, except for Pikachu) to embark on a new adventure in the Hoenn region. While there, Ash met and befriended fellow Pokémon trainer May and her younger brother Max, who joined Ash on his quest to compete for the Hoenn Pokémon League championship.

Diamond and Pearl (2006-10)

Seasons 10-13: Diamond and Pearl, Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension, Diamond and Pearl: Galactic Battles, Diamond and Pearl: Sinnoh League Victors

Three anime characters, one boy with black hair and a cap (Ash) with a yellow creature (Pikachu) on his shoulder, one girl with blue hair (Dawn) and a pink and white cap with a blue and white creature on her head (Piplup) and a spiky brown-haired boy with and orange and green jacket and backpack stand in front of a mountain range.

Where to stream: The Pokémon add-on channel on Prime Video or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon

After the conclusion of the Ruby and Sapphire arc, Ash Ketchum journeyed to the Sinnoh region to continue his quest to become a Pokémon master. He would eventually reunite with his old friend Brock, as well as meet a new companion in the form of Dawn, the daughter of a top Pokémon Coordinator who wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Along the way Ash also met Paul, a rival Pokémon trainer with an opposing philosophy to Ash’s belief that friendship and empathy was the key to effective Pokémon mastery.

Black & White arc (2010-13)

Seasons 14-16: Black & White, Black & White: Rival Destinies, Black & White: Adventures in Unova and Beyond

A purple-haired anime girl (Iris), a black-haired anime boy (Ash) with a yellow creature on his shoulder (Pikachu), and a green-haired anime boy (Cilan) with a tan and green creature (Pansage) hanging on his arm, stand in front of a field of trees and mountains.

Where to stream: Tubi , the Pokémon add-on channel on Prime Video , or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon

The Black & White arc of the Pokémon anime followed Ash’s adventures through the Unova region. This arc introduced two new companions: Iris, a Pokémon trainer specializing in Dragon types, and Cilan, one of the Gym Leaders of the Striaton City Gym and a “Pokémon connoisseur” who matches trainers with starter Pokémon based on various forms of compatibility. The Black & White arc also introduced Team Plasma, a rival villainous organization to Team Rocket whose mission is to dismantle Pokémon society and free Pokémon from what they see as unjust captivity.

XY (2013-16)

A short-haired anime girl (Serena) with a red hat, a blonde-haired girl (Bonnie) with a brown mouse-like creature on her head (Dedenne), a black-haired anime boy (Ash) with a red cap and a yellow creature on his shoulder (Pikachu), and a blond-haired boy with round glasses (Clemont) stand in front of a cliffside with green shrubs in the background.

A smiling anime boy with black hair and a red cap (Ash) rubbing his face against a yellow smiling creature (Pikachu) on his shoulder.

Where to stream: Roku Channel , the Pokémon add-on channel on Prime Video , or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon

Referred to by many Pokémon fans (including Monster Kids author Daniel Dockery ) as the pinnacle of the original anime, the Sun & Moon arc saw Ash Ketchum not only undergo a major character redesign , but also introduced the Alola region and the concept of Z-moves. Instead of traveling through the region, Ash attends Pokémon school on Melemele Island, where he befriends his fellow classmates Lana, Lillie, Mallow, Sophocles, and Kiawe.

Journeys (2019-2023)

Seasons 23-25: Journeys: The Series, Master Journeys: The Series, Ultimate Journeys: The Series

The arc saw the reintroduction of several old companions, like Misty and Brock, as well as a new friend in the form of Goh, a young Pokémon trainer who had a formative experience with the elusive mythical Pokémon Mew.

Following the Adventures in the Orange Islands season of the Pokémon anime, Ash, Misty, and a returning Brock meet new unique creatures in The Johto Journeys . The former season functioned as a colorful side story arc and stopgap until Game Freak's Pokémon Gold and Silver video games could be released to adapt to the Generation II region.

Naturally, this meant the aspiring Pokémon master Ash Ketchum would form a new team to take on its Gym Challenges to enter the Johto League Silver Conference. Pikachu was the obvious exception in this squad, but new additions like hard-hitting Heracross and boisterous Totodile had their time to shine in The Johto Journeys anime.

10 Phanpy Was a Charming Character But Struggled in Battles

10 rarest pokémon from ruby, sapphire, and emerald.

Pokemon's rare catches make the games all the more exciting, and Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald have some exciting Pokemon like Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys.

The small elephant Pokémon Phanpy was an endearing addition to Ash's team, received by the trainer as an egg. Mr. Shellby and Kimie gave the protagonist the Ground-Type creature as a reward for helping them thwart Team Rocket. The comical antagonist group was trying to steal eggs from the pair's farm where they nurse Pokémon eggs. As wholesome as Phanpy was in The Johto Journeys , it struggled in several battles.

The Ice-Type Geam Leader Pryce handily defeated it via his Dewgong and was knocked out by Macy's Quilava in the Johto League Silver Conference. Still, Phanpy was not without its bright moments. The Pokémon defeated Team Rocket more than once, which included rescuing its Cleffa friend. In the Silver Conference, Phanpy still had an important role to play, forcing Macy's Elektabuzz to retreat.

9 Noctowl Used Creative Psychic Abilities in Battles

Bird Pokémon found in the early routes of each region has been a tradition since Red and Blue for the Game Boy, and that carries over to the anime. During Ash's adventures in The Johto Journeys , the young trainer captured the fully-evolved — and first Shiny variant — Noctowl and helped in battles using creative tactics.

The dual Normal/Flying-Type Noctowl always had some Psychic theming despite not truly falling under the typing, especially thanks to its abilities. Moves like Hypnosis and Confusion cleverly allowed it to beat some strong opponents. This included fending off a Fearow, harassing a small Pidgey and defeating the Ghost-Type Gym Leader Morty's Haunter and Gengar.

8 Totodile Became a Team Mainstay With a Vibrant Personality

Though not as iconic as Squirtle, Totodile became a beloved Water-Type Starter Pokémon since its debut in Gold and Silver for the Game Boy Color. Like in Ash's adventures in the Kanto region during the Indigo League anime season, the young hero's Johto team would include all of the region's starters.

The Water-Type Pokémon was a delightfully boisterous personality on the team, showing plenty of character even if his appearances in key battles were limited. His first and only Gym battle role was in a convincing defeat against the Normal-Type leader Whitney and her powerful Miltank. Despite his competitive struggles, Totodile would still get his highlights, namely defeating Harrison's Sneasel in a tense Silver Conference battle.

7 Cyndaquil Filled the Fire-Type Niche on the Johto Team

15 longest pokémon games, ranked by average story playtime.

Pokémon games are often longer than players realize, especially when factoring in some of the extras and additions made to some of the games.

During Charizard's absences from the team, the Johto Starter Cyndaquil helped fill the Fire-Type vacancy in Ash's team. The Pokémon was initially nervous, but it quickly proved effective in competitions after it joined the team. It wouldn't evolve into its second-stage species, Quilava, until the following Hoenn-themed anime season.

Even so, Cyndaquil made a strong first impression almost immediately after Ash discovered it in a forest, taking on the Bug-Type Gym Leader Busy in Azalea Town. This Type matchup favored the Fire-Type creature, which led to Cyndaquil beating Scyther — Bugsy's strongest Pokémon. Against all odds, it even took down Jasmine's daunting Steel/Ground-Type Steelix and later Pryce's Water/Ice-Type Dodging.

6 Bulbasaur Proved Reliable During Its Time in Johto

While Ash would meet mostly new companions for his adventures in The Johto Journeys season, some of his best Pokémon from the Indigo League also join him. Bulbasaur is a classic among this group, fresh from his roles in both the latter and Adventures in the Orange Islands .

The pure Grass-Type Bulbasaur never evolved past his first stage, but that didn't stop him from winning noteworthy matchups. These included a battle against Misty's Poliwhirl, which determined whether Ash or the Cerulean City Gym Leader would get to keep Totodile. Most important, though, were the key battles in the Johto League Silver Conference. Bulbasaur beat Jackson's Shiny Magneton and battled his tense rival Meganium to a heated draw.

5 Squirtle Played an Important Role in the Silver Conference

Another Kanto-region classic, Squirtle, would follow Ash from their journeys in Kanto and the Orange Islands to the Johto region. The small turtle Pokémon proved its competitive worth since joining the team and The Johto Journeys is no exception. While the Water-Type Squirtle has a more limited role when compared to the first two anime storylines, it made its presence known in important battles.

The Pokémon temporarily left the team to train with the Squirtle Squad as firefighters in Kanto, but returned for the Silver Conference. With their team outnumbered, Squirtle pulled out clutch victories against Macy's team. The Water turtle overcame its Electric-Type disadvantage to beat her Electabuzz and finished Macy's team off by defeating her Fire-Type Quilava.

4 Bayleef Was the Strongest of Ash's New Starter Pokémon

Ash's 8 best pokémon from the orange islands.

Ash's journey to become a Pokémon Master took him to several regions — including the Orange Islands, where he relied on partners like Bulbasaur.

Bayleef was the only partially evolved member of Ash's team during their quest across Johto, and she quickly became a staple. The pure Grass-Type Pokémon is the evolution of Chikorita, and she was the second native species Ash caught in The Johto Journeys . The protagonist received Bayleef as a Chikorita when he battled it in the wild and rescued her from Team Rocket.

The two bonded and developed a great dynamic with the rest of Ash's team, earning sweeping victories against trainers, the Rockets, and Gym challenges. Chikorita defeated Bugsy's Spinarak despite her weakness to Bug-Types and later evolved into Bayleef in a successful effort to defeat Team Rocket. Her most impressive achievement came against Chuck, the Fighting-Type Gym Leader, where she swept his entire team.

3 Heracross Was a Big-Game Player

As Ash began his fresh adventure in the Johto region following his successful campaign on the Orange Islands, he found his first new companion in Heracross. The Bug Pokémon joined Ash's team just three episodes into The Johto Adventures anime season, putting on a series of impressive feats in battle.

The dual Bug/Fighting-Type Heracross had a spell in Professor Oak's lab so the scientist could research the curious Pokémon's nature, but made nearly every appearance count across Gym challenges and the Silver Conference. He used his incredible strength and blistering speed to defeat Shingo's Scizor. Later, Heracross scored a massive victory in the Silver Conference against Gary Oak's Magmar, overcoming the odds and clear Type disadvantage. Heracross ranks as Ash's strongest Johto-native Pokémon.

2 Charizard Had Maturing to Do But Was Still Powerful

10 best pokémon battles in the original anime.

Pokémon: Indigo League set up Ash and Pikachu as Pokémon Master material by staging some truly incredible battles.

Consistently one of Ash's most powerful yet complicated Pokémon to deal with, Charizard made crucial appearances in The Johto Journeys . The most memorable Fire-Type Pokémon — starter or otherwise — he went through more character growth in the season before setting off for training. The dual Fire/Flying-Type Charizard followed Ash from Indigo League and Adventures in the Orange Islands , proving a powerful but stubborn ally before having its niche filled by Cyndaquil.

The draconic beast helped Ash defeat two Gym Leaders. Against the Flying-Type specialist Falkner, Charizard defeated his Pidgeot in a high-stakes aerial battle. Later, in a Gym battle rematch, he defeats the Dragon-Type leader Claire's Dragonair. Before resuming his training in the Charicific Valley, he won an epic showdown in the Silver Conference against Gary Oak's Blastoise.

1 Pikachu is a Star Competitor on the Johto Squad

Pikachu was an undisputed stalwart since the beginning of Ash's quest in Pokémon: Indigo League , and he was as reliable as ever in The Johto Journeys . The electric mouse was the protagonist's true Starter Pokémon, despite Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur being the conventional choices. The pure Electric-Type Pikachu was and is far from invincible, but he played instrumental roles in key Gym Leader and Silver Conference League battles throughout the season.

He's met defeat in The Johto Journeys , but the Pokémon played parts in the team's victories against Gym Leaders Whitney, Morty, Jasmine, and Claire. During the Silver Conference, Pikachu later defeated Salvador's Furret, Jackson's Azumarill, and Harrison's Kecleon. Despite the team's collective valiant effort, Harrison's Blaziken was the difference in Team Ash's League defeat.

Expanding across a multitude of media, including TCGs, video games, manga, live-action movies and anime, the Pokémon franchise is set in a shared world of humans and creatures with a wide variety of special abilities.

Only Original Pokmon Superfans Know These Rare Facts

The Pokémon anime series is one of the driving forces behind this franchise's multimedia success, with the original run of the TV show striking a chord with many fans. While the labeling and structuring of the anime and its seasons can become convoluted, the "original series" generally comprises the Indigo League , Adventures in the Orange Islands , and The Johto Journeys .

Continuity can also fluctuate, but the series has realized a wonderfully vibrant universe. A great deal of writing went into fleshing out the mythos of this world, but behind-the-scenes developments of the show give more intriguing insights into its creation. From the Pokémon that nearly became Ash's partner over Pikachu to the trainer's tense history with League Championships, there are many interesting facts about the original anime.

The Indigo League From Pokmon Red & Blue, Explained

The Indigo League is the Kanto region's official Pokmon league and has been represented by more generations than any other league in the franchise.

The Kanto Region Safari Zone Remains Unseen in the English Dub

10 strongest pokmon in red & blue, ranked.

Pokmon Red and Blue were the games that started it all, but which were the strongest and most desirable Pokmon for players to catch?

Though it didn't appear in every mainline Pokémon game, the Safari Zone is one of the series' most consistent features. However, the original version of this facility from the Kanto region never appeared in the English dub of Pokémon: Indigo League . The anime series is no stranger to canceled or otherwise unaired episodes, and the original Episode 35 was scrapped due to firearm depictions.

This episode would see Ash and his friends arrive at Fuchsia City, where the Safari Zone's warden would aim a gun at the protagonist. He even fired at Team Rocket later in the episode. However, it seems the plot is quietly accepted as canon since Ash would later use one of the 30 Tauros he inadvertently caught in the Safari Zone. The Normal-Type bull later excelled on Ash's Pokémon team in the anime's Orange Islands season .

Pokmon's Adventures in the Orange Islands Season Was a Stopgap for Johto

When the first season of the Pokémon anime aired in the '90s, its runaway success ensured Ash, Brock, and Misty's adventures would continue. However, the success and airdates of the TV show outpaced the development of Game Freak's video games. The Pokémon Company needed something to fill time slots until Gold and Silver were released for the Game Boy Color.

The solution was the beloved second season Adventures in the Orange Islands , which took Ash, Misty, and Tracey temporarily replacing Brock to a fresh region. It was a stopgap until the company could formally incorporate Pokémon Gold and Silver 's Johto region into the anime and its 100 new species .

Clefairy Was Poised to be Ash's Signature Partner Before Pikachu

The iconic Pikachu has long since been the face of the Pokémon franchise , but that role nearly went to Clefairy. Naturally, that almost made the Fairy creature Ash's main companion in the flagship anime series. Before the well-received Pokémon Adventures manga series, another called Pokémon Pocket Monsters was published as the franchise's first manga and heavily featured Clefairy.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters is a wild departure from what fans know of the ongoing anime and even the video games, adopting a raunchy comedic tone. Clefairy even had traits of Team Rocket's Meowth. He could talk and had a sassy attitude, but once the core anime series was developed, Pikachu took over the mascot role due to its striking design and universal appeal.

A Porygon-Themed Episode Was Banned For Causing Health Scares

Review: pokmon tcg: scarlet & violettwilight masquerade.

Scarlet & Violet - Twilight Masquerade using Ogerpon as its focal point won't excite everyone, but it's a great addition to the Pokmon TCG.

Outside of the original Episode 35's gun-related ban, the most infamous banned episode is Episode 38. Translated to "Electric Soldier Porygon," the episode sees Ash and his friends discover a technical issue with the Poké Ball transmission device at a Pokémon Center. The group ventures inside the machine to find the problem's source, leading to a scene involving the Normal-Type Porygon — and rapid strobing lights.

The episode's flashing lights caused more than 600 Japanese children to be rushed to hospitals after suffering from epileptic seizures. Since then, Porygon and its evolutionary species (Porygon2 and Porygon-Z) haven't appeared in Pokemon 's anime series except in brief cameo sequences.

The Orange League Was Ash's Only Championship For Nearly 20 Years

With over 25 years of broadcasting to generations of fans worldwide, not everyone will be familiar with Ash's long competitive record in the Pokémon anime. While he's been the most consistent protagonist since Indigo League 's 1997 premiere in Japan, some franchise fans would be surprised to know he's only won three League Championships.

The most surprising fact is that Ash's first win came in the Adventures in the Orange Island season, bridging the gap between the Kanto and Johto regions. The aspiring Pokémon Master would go without another League Championship for nearly 20 (real-world) years until Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon 's 139th episode (1,078th overall).

Team Rocket's Jessie and James Were Named After Historical Outlaws

Ash's best pokmon from the johto region.

The Johto Region gifted Ash some great Pokmon like Tododile, Cyndaquil, and Heracross who fought alongside Ash & his friends on their journey.

Since it's a children's show, the Pokémon anime — classic or otherwise — wouldn't feature villains too sinister, but Team Rocket has some interesting real-world inspirations. The organization's Jessie and James are some of the most beloved antagonists from the anime for their comedic relief and colorful banter, but they're based on the outlaw Jesse James.

Though the influence is strictly superficial, Team Rocket's Jessie and James are named after the real-life gangster known for robbing trains and banks. Jesse James lived in the 1800s and also led the James-Younger Gang. Pokémon 's Jessie and James even have rivals influenced by a real-world outlaw, with Butch and Cassidy being a not-so-subtle nod to famous outlaw Butch Cassidy.

Pikachu's Design Was Almost Much More Muscular

Aside from Pokémon like Clefairy nearly taking Pikachu's place as the franchise mascot — and Ash's partner — the electric mouse almost had a wildly different character design. Instead of the endearing and friendly design Game Freak designers settled on, the creature was nearly made into a hulking muscle-bound Pokémon.

The Electric-Type Pikachu is no stranger to design changes, as he went from a rotund shape to the current leaner depiction. However, an intimidating and muscular mouse would have been an unsettling departure for the franchise. Per an interview with the Wall Street Journal , the late Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said then-President Hiroshi Yamaguchi requested this artistic change to appeal to American audiences.

Since Indigo League, Meowth is the Only Pokmon to be a Gym Leader

Longtime fans of Pokémon might remember the Indigo League episode where Ash battles Team Rocket for the Viridian City Gym Badge. Still, it's easy to overlook the surprising implication and record set by Meowth that stands today. In Episode 63 of the Pokémon anime's first season, Ash battles the gag Team Rocket villains as stand-ins for the mob boss — and true Gym Leader — Giovanni.

With the Team Rocket trio serving as interim leaders, Meowth has the honor of being the only Pokémon to be a Gym Leader. It's a somewhat throwaway fun fact of the anime since its episodic nature doesn't dwell too much on continuity. Even so, it's an amusing and surprisingly impressive achievement for the Normal-Type cat Pokémon.

The Orange Islands Are the Only Region Not Based on the Video Games

Ash's 10 best pokmon from the indigo league.

Pikachu isnt Ashs only reliable partner the Pokmon Master also found staunch allies in other Pokemon, too, such as Charizard and Pidgeot.

Tying into the second season, Adventures in the Orange Islands was mostly likely developed as a stopgap until The Johto Journeys , making the Orange Islands an anime-exclusive region. With the success of the games being so young and the demand for new episodes of the show high, the Orange Islands were a creative choice that hadn't been featured in the video games.

Also known as the Orange Archipelago, this region wasn't based on any of Game Freak's video games or any third-party developers' spin-off games. Like most regions in the games, it had its own Gym Leader challenges and a League Championship. Unlike most mainline Game Freak titles, the Orange Islands only have four Gyms and function similarly to Sun and Moon 's Island Kahunas in the Alola region.

Tracey Was Created Out of Concern for Brock Being Viewed as a Stereotype

Besides being known for Ash's first-ever Pokémon League Championship win and filling the gap between Kanto and Johto, Tracey Sketchit replacing Brock was among the most noteworthy developments in Adventures in the Orange Islands . Brock temporarily leaves Ash and Misty to work for Professor Ivy. In a 2008 interview with PokéBeach , then-anime director and storyboard artist Masamitsu Hidaka said they created Tracey as a replacement when they realized Pokémon would expand to the international markets.

At the time, they were concerned that Brock would be perceived as an Asian stereotype. Howeve, after seeing the positive reception to Brock's character, the Pewter City Gym Leader rejoined the group, starting in The Johto Journeys . Still, Tracey would reappear sporadically in the following seasons and series, including Ash's penultimate tenure in Pokémon Journeys .

Expanding across a multitude of media, including TCGs, video games, manga, live-action movies and anime, the Pokmon franchise is set in a shared world of humans and creatures with a wide variety of special abilities.
