Positano Travel Guide

When I scrolled through Pinterest years ago, a stunning photograph of the cliffs of Positano showed up on my feed.  I had no idea a place as beautiful as this was real, let alone a place that I would visit in my lifetime.  I did tons of research before visiting Positano and experienced the town myself this year. Positano is not the easiest place to travel to, so I made this Positano Travel Guide you’ll need to read when planning your Positano Trip!

The Only Positano Travel Guide You Need | Top Positano Travel Tips

How to Get to Positano

Unlike many major cities in Italy, there is no direct airport in Positano. You will have to fly in to either Rome or Naples Airports. From there you should make your way to a closer town near Positano like Sorrento or Salerno. I have listed the many ways you can get there below:

Train : There is no direct train to Positano, but you can take the train from either Naples Airport or Rome Airport to a closer city on the Amalfi Coast like Sorrento or Salerno.

Ferry:  During the day you can take a ferry to Positano from either Naples, Sorrento, Salerno, and Amalfi. Just note that luggage will most likely have an additional cost to your ticket.

Bus:  The SITA bus to Positano is the cheapest way to get to Positano. For 2 Euro you can take the 45-minute bus from Sorrento to Positano. The views from the bus are really spectacular too! Be sure to sit on the right side of the bus.

Private Car Transfer:  The most expensive, but efficient way to get to Positano is hiring a private car transfer from Naples Airport to Positano. The cost is around 100E+ but definitely the easiest.

My experience getting to Positano

From the long journey, I had to get to Positano, taking a private car is almost worth it! I landed in Naples Airport at 7:30 PM. The ferry and direct bus service from Naples to Sorrento already had stopped service for the day. The only option I had was to take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples Garibaldi Train Station to Sorrento.

I had heard this train was a little sketchy, and those rumors are very true. I felt uncomfortable the whole hour on the train.

Our luggage gave it away that we were tourists so we had to be highly aware and suspicious of the people around us to avoid being robbed. As the train neared Sorrento the safer we began to feel.

Nothing happened to us, but being aware of your surroundings is very important as professional pick-pockets roam this train! I wouldn’t take this train again. Once in Sorrento, we spent the night at a hotel and headed for the SITA bus to Positano the next morning.

To avoid this train, be sure to fly into Naples before 7 PM so you can either take a ferry or direct bus right into Sorrento! From Sorrento, you can either take another ferry or the SITA bus directly to Positano.

Where to Stay in Positano

Positano is definitely the photogenic star of the Amalfi Coast. Anywhere you stay will have stunning views (most likely with terraces). There are really only 2 main roads that run through Positano, so carrying your luggage through the narrow alleyways is inevitable whether you stay at the top or bottom of the hill.

I stayed on the quieter Fornillo side of Positano. My views weren’t what you see on the typical Positano Postcards, but nevertheless had the same amount of stunning impact.

I would recommend staying on this side of the town. Not only is it a little quieter, but you can save some money as it is a little further from Spiaggia Grande beach which acts as the center of town.

If you aren’t concerned about budget, then you will not have a hard time finding a stunning place to call home for a couple of days, or weeks if you’re lucky!

Getting Around Positano & the Amalfi Coast

Walking/ Climbing: So if you have done any research on Positano, you know there are steps everywhere! One night we had dinner on the beach and had to climb over 200 steps to get back to our Bed & Breakfast.

I tried counting for an exact amount but lost track after 200! You can avoid the climb by veering on the main road, but will take you double the time to get anywhere.

While there are many steps, I didn’t find it as exhausting as I thought it would be! Positano is also a small town. If anything you can walk the entire town within 20 minutes on the main road.

The fun of course is getting lost within the narrow alleyways off the main road. There you’ll find stunning cute vignettes, cats, and stunning views of the coast!

Bus:  There is a public bus that goes along the main road in Positano if get tired from walking around. These busses will also take you along the coast to the other villages! This is an option if you would like to do a day trip to another town.

Ferry: A faster and more scenic way to get along the coast is by taking ferries. Travel Mar is one of the main companies that offer multiple ferries to the majority of towns.

The cost varies on what town you’re visiting. For example, a one-way to Capri is about 20 Euros while a one-way to Amalfi is 8 Euro.

Vespa:  You can rent a Vespa for a day from Positano and ride along the coast! Only for the brave, however. While there is only one main road, the cliffs turn abruptly and the view looking down may scare some away. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Private Car:  While the most expensive, renting a private car with a driver is always an option!

What Kind of Food to Expect

It is no surprise that the food will be Italian, but expect a lot of seafood! There aren’t many grocery stores to buy your own food to make. I remember passing by 2 stores that were a little pricy.  I even spoke to a local and she has to go to Sorrento once a week to buy her groceries! So I wouldn’t plan on making your own food.

My Favorite Spots:

Bar Buca di Bacco: Casual Spot right on the main beach! In the morning you can get your coffee & croissant fix and during lunch a pizza and a glass of wine! A more affordable option amongst the other sit-down restaurants on the main beach.

Ristorante Saraceno D’Oro:  A sit-down restaurant on the Fornillo side of Positano. I loved the energy of this place. You could tell the people working were just having a good time! A refreshing vibe compared to a lot of the ‘stuffier’ restaurants.

Budgeting for Positano

Positano on a Budget? How Much It Really Costs to Travel to the Amalfi Coast

Visiting these gorgeous towns along the coast isn’t just reserved for the rich and famous. You can easily enjoy Positano & Amalfi on a budget, but don’t expect your accommodations to be grand.

While the average price per night in Positano is around 300 USD- 500USD, if you book early enough you can find some beds and breakfasts for around 150USD. Expect higher rates during the high season from June-September.

The food in Positano is also on the pricer side if you choose to sit down during lunch and dinner. For lunch, I usually went to Bar Buca di Bacco , a casual spot along the beach, and had a pizza or sandwich that held me over for dinner! The food in Positano is so fresh, having fresh seafood is a must for dinner!

What to Pack

Just like any city in Italy, it can get cold in the winter and hot in the summer. To be safe during the summer months, a light jacket can be a lifesaver if it gets chilly at night. Also, with the many gift shops lining the street you can always buy something!

Also, a pair of comfortable shoes will be necessary to climb the many steps of Positano! I personally brought 3 pairs of shoes: one sneaker, a low espadrilles wedge, and an espadrilles flat which was perfect for 5 days in Positano.

Keep Your Euros Handy

Carry cash on you at all times as some businesses don’t accept credit cards, especially in the small towns along the Amalfi Coast. You can get by with just a credit card but be sure to carry euros for small purchases like water.

Things to Do in Positano

Unlike Rome where there are a plethora of historical sights to see, the Amalfi coast is reserved for relaxation (except the many stairs that you have to walk every day).

Spend your days at the beach. There are two beaches in Positano. Spiaggia Grande is the main beach that acts as the center of town! If you are looking for something quieter head to Fornillo, just a 5-10 minute walk along the coastal pathway.

Take a ride around the Amalfi Coast on a private boat tour

Enjoy fresh Italian food and have more than one negroni during aperitivo.

Positano.com: Your Complete Guide

Positano is the most famous and iconic village on the Amalfi Coast , the spectacular strip of coastline with the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea to one side and the peaks of the Lattari Mountains to the other. The coastline stretches for 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Naples (Napoli) and north of Salerno in the southern Italian region of Campania. The entire Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , with highlights including Positano as well as the equally picturesque towns of Amalfi and Ravello .

Take a dip in the crystalline waters off the coast, admire the dramatic cliffs by sea on a mini-cruise, relax over a romantic dinner overlooking the water, and stroll along the narrow, twisting lanes under a lush canopy of wisteria and lemon trees. These are the unique charms that make Positano one of the top destinations in all of Italy for those who want to sample the country’s timeless "la dolce vita" atmosphere.

Where is Positano?

Positano is the first town you reach on the Amalfi Coast when arriving from Naples , and it's about a 20-minute drive from the Sorrentine Peninsula and about 30 minutes from Capri by ferry. After Positano, the next towns are Praiano , Conca de' Marini , Amalfi , and the other villages along the coast.

You can reach Positano by bus from Sorrento or Amalfi (there are two stops: "La Sponda" and "Chiesa Nuova"). There are also ferries in the summer from Sorrento and Capri.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast

Where should I stay on the Amalfi Coast?

Positano is perfect for couples, with its romantic atmosphere and leisurely days on the beaches: Fornillo , Arienzo , Laurito , or Spiaggia Grande (also called Marina Grande). There are great cafés and restaurants and you can also take a boat tour to admire the Li Galli Islets , Capri , and the surrounding coastline. Keep in mind that Positano is a vertical town , with a number of steep staircases that are not accessible for those with limited mobility or small children.

Amalfi is flatter than Positano and set in the middle of the coastline. There is just one small beach, but there is a convenient boat service that will take you to a number of other nearby beaches that are only accessible by sea.

Ravello is set on the clifftop above the coastline and is famous for its stunning views from the terraces of its historic villas. The town is also home to a number of art and music festivals.

Maiori and Minori are better choices for families, as they are flat and have an easily-accessible beach.

Where to Choose a Hotel

What is there to see and how should I get around?

Positano is a small village and you can see its sights easily in half a day. More than just a place to visit, Positano is more an experience. Stroll along Via Pasitea to admire the shops selling "pezze di Positano" (local resort wear in linen and silk) or relax on one of the terraces to admire the views over the colorful houses tumbling down the cliffside.

One of the most famous landmarks in Positano is the colorful majolica cupola of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta , which houses the Byzantine Madonna Nera that is the object of much devotion among locals. This historic icon was found on the beach after a violent storm and on that site, the church was built. You can also visit the ancient Roman domus next to the church, the recently excavated ruins of a seaside villa with frescos similar to those found in Pompeii. The Roman Archaeological Museum where the villa is located is open all year round for guided visits.

Be sure to take in the Saracen towers , ancient watchtowers that were built on strategic spots along the coast and were used to protect the locals from pirates. Positano is home to three of these: Torre Trasita , Torre di Sponda , and Torre di Fornillo .

From Positano, head up to Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle to walk along the Path of the Gods to Agerola .

The easiest way to get from Positano to nearby towns and Capri is with the ferries and boats that set off from the small pier in Positano. Otherwise, there are Sita buses . We do not suggest driving due to the heavy traffic and limited parking. For couples, the most convenient way to get around is by scooter.

How to Visit Positano, Italy’s Iconic Summer Hot Spot on the Amalfi Coast

From its cobbled streets to its stunning beaches, this glamorous coastal village is where vacation dreams come true.

The Amalfi Coast — a photogenic 30-mile stretch of vacation paradise on the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula — calls to mind postcard-ready seaside villages, sun-drenched beaches, and restaurant terraces overlooking the sparkling sea. While there are many standouts in this famous region, few match the charisma and magnetism of Positano. This seaside idyll is well known for its narrow cobbled streets, stylish boutiques, buzzy beach clubs, and cosmopolitan ambience. Hotels perched on cliffsides provide the perfect refuge for travelers after full days spent sightseeing, shopping, and gorging on fresh seafood.

Given its prime location, Positano also makes a wonderful home base for exploring the charming towns of Ravello and Praiano. Not surprisingly, this slice of coastal Italian paradise — and well-established tourism darling — draws hordes of travelers every summer.

Before jetting off to Positano, scroll on for everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip filled with fun in the sun, food, culture, and spellbinding views.

Amanda Blackard/Travel + Leisure

Getting to Positano

Most travelers will fly into Rome or Naples and then catch a train, bus, or shuttle to reach Positano. If you hire a private car and navigate the curve-hugging roads on your own, it's about 3.5 hours from Rome and an hour from Naples. During the day, you can take a ferry from Naples, Salerno, Sorrento, or Amalfi.

Best Times to Visit Positano

Summer is peak season in Positano — and all along the Amalfi Coast, for that matter — with droves of vacationers packing the town to soak up the sunshine and laze on the beaches. While the crowds typically depart in early September, the weather remains pleasant, and most restaurants, shops, and hotels stay open through late October. After that, virtually everything closes for the winter and reopens in April.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

Best Things to Do in Positano

Much of Positano's charm is tied to its scenic environs and laid-back yet buzzy energy. Spiaggia Grande — the city's main beach — combines both. It’s the place to rent a sunbed, catch some rays, grab a drink, and snap photos of the colorful town above. Looking for a low-key alternative to the crowds? Consider strolling west for about eight minutes to Fornillo Beach. For cocktails and coastal splendor, many travelers favor Arienzo Beach Club Positano , which is accessible via a short boat ride from the main pier.

Piazza dei Mulini buzzes with excitement and a mix of designer and artisan shops. One of the most unique and iconic things to purchase? Handmade leather sandals. Positano has many can’t-miss cultural attractions as well. The captivating Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is a storied church featuring a restored Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary, beautiful bas-reliefs, and a glimmering dome roof. MAR — Museo Archeologico Romano gives visitors a close-up look at an ancient Roman villa with crypts and beautifully preserved frescoes.

The famous Path of the Gods hiking trail runs from Nocelle, a hilltop village just above Positano, to Bomerano. It’s a great way to escape the crowds, stretch your legs, and soak in mesmerizing views.

Of course, it’s not just the allure of Positano itself but also its proximity to the many other wonders of the Amalfi Coast and nearby Capri that make it so irresistible. Consider booking a boat excursion or even taking a road trip to see more of this breathtaking region.

Best Positano Restaurants

A stalwart establishment that dates back to 1965, Michelin-rated La Taverna del Leone continues to lure diners with its handmade pasta and warm, friendly hospitality. Casa Mele serves artful plates of mouthwatering food and also invites culinary enthusiasts to take cooking classes. Il Tridente sits atop the centrally located Hotel Poseidon . The combination of house-smoked meats and fresh seafood, cocktails, and sweeping panoramas from the rooftop terrace keeps the tables full and patrons coming back for more.

Adamo ed Eva at Hotel Eden Roc Positano exudes a romantic atmosphere that makes it ideal for honeymooners and couples celebrating a special occasion. The sea bass, lobster pasta, and lemon risotto — all prepared with fresh local ingredients — are some of the menu highlights. Zass at Il San Pietro di Positano earned its Michelin star thanks to delectably creative twists on gastronomic traditions. Stellar service, seaside vistas, and an impressive wine list enhance the appeal.

Viewed from afar, Positano is one of Italy’s most memorable little villages, thanks to its truly magnificent position. The town’s pink, gold, and red cubes spill down a ravine to the sea.

It’s renowned for its stunning landscapes, fetching pastel architecture, and laid back atmosphere. Positano is the the very essence of the Amalfi Coast.

view of Positano from the marina

Positano was once a sleepy village known only to a handful of outsiders. It enjoyed some success in the 12th and 13th centuries. But never challenged Amalfi Town for power.

The town’s moment of glory came in the 1960s when it became, along with Capri, one of the favored retreats of the la dolce vita set. As a result, today it’s immensely popular.

One Day In Positano Itinerary

Here’s a detailed itinerary to experience the best of Positano:

Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at a local cafe.

Have a freshly baked pastry, avocado toast, granita, or cappuccino while taking in the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Check out Cafe Positano, Casa e Bottega, and Lemon Point.

Historic Center

Next, explore the charming streets of Positano’s historic center. The main drag is Via Mulini.

Parts of it are shaded with vines and bougainvillea trellises. You can take a selfie in the flower filled arch in the middle of the street.

walking path in Positano

Wander through the souk-like labyrinth of alleys laced with bougainvillea. There are non-stop local boutiques offering stylish clothing, handmade sandals, bright handmade ceramics, and other unique souvenirs.

In Positano, you will find a distinctive style of hand made ceramics known as “Positano ceramics” or “Majolica.” These ceramics are famous for their colorful and vibrant designs. Traditional motifs often include lemons, flowers, and sea-inspired patterns.

Then, continue wandering up. Positano requires some climbing! The side streets are full of numerous little boutiques and shops, with wares spilling out onto the street.

At Piazza Mulini turn right on Via Christoforo Colombo. You’ll find more shops and eateries on this next main drag. From here, you’ll have the classic view of Positano with its majolica-domed church.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a must see with one day in Positano

On your way through town, don’t forget to visit the iconic Santa Maria Assunta Church. It’s Positano’s main church. It was founded in the 13th century as a Benedictine monastery.

It’s famous for its exquisite majolica dome, which you see in all the postcard shots of Positano.

The church is home to the prized 13th century Black Madonna icon above the high altar. According to legend, when pirates tried to steal the icon, a storm battered them. Sailors heard the icon chant “Posa Posa’ (put me down).

Black Madonna icon

When they left the icon ashore, the store abated instantly. And Positano received its name.

For lunch, indulge in some delectable Italian cuisine at a traditional trattoria. Avoid the tourist traps along the beach and venture to the outskirts of town.

Savor freshly caught seafood, homemade pasta, and a glass of local wine while enjoying the pleasant sea breeze. I liked the Furore Bianco Fiorduva, a crisp white wine blend.

After lunch, you have several options for your afternoon in Positano. You can hit Spiagga Grande for some R&R, hike the Path of the Gods, or ferry to Amalfi Town to see the cathedral and historic center.

Spiaggia Grande

The first option is to head to one of Positano’s beaches to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal clear waters. Positano has two beaches: the main beach, Spiaggia Grande, and Fornillo.

Spiaggia Grande is a famous parasol strewn beach with about 1,000 feet of beachfront. Fornillo is a short walk 15 minute off to the right.

You can swim at either for free. But you may want to rent an umbrellas and sunbeams.

Take a dip or simply relax on the sandy shores, immersing yourself in the relaxing coastal ambiance.

Path of the Gods hiking trail, a great thing to do with one day in Positano

Path Of The Gods Hike

If you are up for some exercise and want to escape the crowds, take on a memorable adventure with the famous Path of the Gods, Il Sentiero degli Dei . This scenic 3.5 mile trail treats you to jaw-dropping views of the Amalfi Coast and rugged cliffs.

It’s an ancient shepherds’ route that winds along the hills from Positano to Praiano, sometimes right at the cliff’s edge. (Beware if you are afraid of heights!)

You’ll stroll through diverse landscapes — fragrant lemon groves, terraced vineyards, caves, and precipitous cliffs.

Path of the Gods hiking trail

Once you reach Nocelle, you can decide to walk back to Positano or catch a bus or taxi to your Amalfi Coast accommodation. It’s a thrilling hike, leaving you with unforgettable memories of this stunning region.

To get to the start of the trailhead, it’s most sensible to book a taxi or a  p rivate transfer  to Agerola Bomerano. If you plan on hiking, it’s a steep 2 hour walk.

For maximum efficiency, you can  b ook a guided tour and have someone else take care of the transportation logistics. You can also catch the bus from Amalfi town.

Visit Amalfi Town

A third choice is to visit Amalfi Town . It exudes a delightful charm, much like Positano.

The town’s vibrant ambiance is heightened by its tightly packed houses that gracefully cascade down to the enchanting port below. While here, don’t miss the opportunity to visit one of Italy’s most beautiful churches , the Amalfi Cathedral, a true gem worth exploring.

Nestled in the bustling Piazza del Duomo, the Amalfi Cathedral stands as a grand complex, inviting visitors to step into its rich history.

Amalfi Town

Within its walls lie the Cloister of Paradise, the Basilica of the Crucifix, the Diocesan Museum, the Crypt, and the awe-inspiring cathedral itself. For detailed info for this architectural marvel, be sure to check out my complete Amalfi Cathedral guide .

Don’t limit your exploration to the main square. Venture into Amalfi’s hidden alleys and ancient stairways to escape the crowds. Here, you’ll uncover charming trattorias, perfect for indulging in a delightful snack or break.

If you’re intrigued by the town’s history, make time for the Paper Museum. This unique attraction offers insights into Amalfi’s past as a prominent center for paper trading and is housed within an ancient mill.

Positano at sunset

As the sun sets, head back to your Positano hotel to unwind and freshen up.

Consider taking a sunset cruise or have an aperitivo . Franco’s Bar and Aldo’s Cocktail Bar offer up great views. They’re both on Via Cristoforo Colombo.

Reserve dinner at one of Positano’s renowned restaurants. I can recommend O’Parucchiano and Zaas.

Feast on local specialties, such as seafood risotto or eggplant parmigiana, while savoring panoramic views of the illuminated coastline.

Franco's Bar

Or, if you want to learn how to cook, take a cooking class that includes dinner and a market tour . I didn’t take a class myself when I was there. But I saw signs everyone advertising cooking classes and saw visitors making pasta and the like.

After dinner, take a romantic stroll along the beach, with the twinkling lights of Positano reflecting on the water.

Alternatively, head to one of the vibrant bars or lounges for a nightcap and live music. The go to place is Music on the Rocks , a dramatic beachfront nightclub.

Tips For A One Day In Positano Itinerary

Here are some must know tips and FAQs for visiting Positano.

1. How To Get To Positano

The best way to get to Positano depends on your starting point.

If you are arriving from another city in Italy, the most convenient option is to take a train to Naples and then transfer to a regional train or bus to Sorrento. From Sorrento, you can take a local bus, a ferry, or book a private transfer to Positano .

If you are flying into Italy, the nearest major airport to Positano is Naples International Airport (NAP). From the airport, you can take a direct bus or book a private transfer to Positano .

Alternatively, you can rent a car and drive to Positano. If you are driving from Naples, it takes about 2 hours. However, keep in mind that the Amalfi Coast roads can be narrow and winding, so driving can be challenging for some.

street in Positano

Positano has several paid parking lots located on the outskirts of the town. These lots are usually the best option as they are relatively more spacious and offer shuttle services or easy access to the town center.

Some popular parking lots include Parcheggio Centro, Parcheggio Multipiano, and Parcheggio del Porto.

If you are planning a day trip to Positano, you can visit on a guided tour. Here are some of your options:

  • full day guided tour from Rome
  • private day trip from Naples
  • tour from Naples with Sorrento & Amalfi
  • guided tour from Sorrento

2.   How To Get Around Positano

Positano is small and easy to navigate on foot. Many of the town’s attractions and points of interest are within walking distance of each other. But the town requires some up and down climbing.

If you need a fast way to get around or to travel to nearby towns, buses, boats, and taxis are convenient options.

A yellow shuttle bus also circles the village from top to bottom. And you can always rent a scooter to get around.

La Sirenuse

3. Where To Stay In Positano

Be prepared to bust your budget if you decide to stay overnight in Positano. Hotels are expensive and there’s just not that much inventory.

Palazzo Mura is a charming boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the town. The hotel features beautifully decorated rooms with a touch of traditional Italian design.

From the rooftop terrace, guests can enjoy panoramic views. If the hotel is too pricey, you can still visit the garden-filled courtyard and have an apertivo on the vine-draped patio.

La Sirenuse is a luxurious 5 star hotel, renowned for its elegant ambiance and impeccable service. The hotel exudes timeless glamour.

Each room is offers magnificent views of the sea and the town below. Guests can indulge in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant and the cliffside infinity pool.

ll San Pietro may be my favorite place to stay in Positano. It’s a historic luxury hotel with a laid back vibe.

private beach at Il San Pietro, courtesy of the hotel

The hotel’s private beach, infinity pool, Michelin restaurant (Zass) and lush gardens provide the perfect settings for relaxation and indulgence. It’s outside Positano proper, but the hotel has a shuttle service to get you where you want to go.

Hotel Poseidon is a 4star hotel right in the heart of Positano, just a short walk from the beach and the town’s attractions. You can enjoy the hotel’s rooftop terrace, which features a pool with panoramic views of Positano.

If these hotels give you sticker shock, you can also stay in nearby Praiano or Amalfi Town.

In Praiano, you can check out the Hotel Onda Verde ,  Hotel Villa Maria Pia , or Tromonto D’Oro . In Amalfi Town, check out Hotel Santa Caterina , Hotel Marina Riviera , Hotel Luna Convento , and Residenza Luci .

4. When To Visit Positano

The ideal time to explore Positano is during the shoulder season, which extends from May/June to September/October. This period offers excellent weather with abundant sunshine. And June and September still provide warm temperatures for beach enthusiasts to enjoy.

In July and August, Positano experiences peak tourism, leading to crowded streets and attractions. However, this time of year is perfect for indulging in swimming and water sports activities.

For a more tranquil experience and a budget-friendly trip, consider visiting Positano during the winter months. Then, Positano has charm to spare.

The coastal areas remain relatively mild, and you’ll have the opportunity to explore the town with fewer tourists around.

5. Is Positano A Tourist Trap?

Positano is decidedly not a hidden gem. Its history has left a halo of dreamy intrigue on the town and it is tourist fly popular.

Positano first became popular among artists in the 18th and 19th century. In the 20th century, it was a famous movie location and was discovered by the jet set glitterati. Tourists followed in droves.

So, in some ways, Positano has become a victim of its own success. The picturesque area is often throttled with crowds, especially in the summer months. Thousands of tourists are disgorged from buses and ferries many times a day. The food can be overpriced and mediocre.

Yet the village’s timeless charm and natural beauty still make it worth visiting. It’s an eyeful, although perhaps in need of a slight paint job.

To avoid the claustrophobic siege, the best way to experience Positano is to visit off season, early in the morning, or in the evening. And avoid the weekends.

panoramic view of Positano

5. Is One Day In Positano Enough?

Yes, one day is plenty of time to cover Positano. In fact, it’s so small, you could opt to just spend a few hours there.

6. More Than One Day in Positano?

If you have more than 1 day in Positano, there are plenty more options!

You can visit the fairytale town of Ravello up in the mountains. It’s home to the garden sanctuaries of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.

You can visit the ruins of Pompeii , which is just 22 miles away. You can take a day trip to the magical island of Capri . Or, one of my favorite options, take a vespa tour of the Amalfi Coast .

17. Customize Your Own Handmade Leather Sandals

positano city tour

Did you know that some of these shops with tons of sandals on display are actually showing you that you can customize your own pair? Yep! It’s such a fun activity in Positano for teens and ladies. I definitely recommend heading to Safari. It’s one of the oldest shops in Positano, so you get high-quality sandals.

You can personalize your sandals by choosing your own color and style. And if you’re in town for a super short trip, order ahead online and Gianluca, Safari’s owner, will have your sandals ready to go when you arrive. The best way to enjoy the experience is to let Gianluca help you in person since half the fun is interacting with Italians. You will easily make a new friend!

Adress : Via della Tartana 2, Positano

16. Order a Pastry at Positano’s Most Beloved Café

pastries and espresso on cafe table

You could easily pass Bar Internazionale without knowing why locals love it. The owner, Mimi, was an institution. Loved by both locals and regular visitors, he embodied the simplicity and honesty of Positano’s older generations.

This historical café is located on Positano’s high side. It guarantees an authentic experience, as it’s a family-run business that has become a symbol of the town.

The pastries are absolutely worth trying, as well as the espressos. It’s a to-go kind of place, and it’s located right in front of the SITA bus stop—perfect for a quick breakfast before an Amalfi Coast ride.

Go there to get a vibe of the Amalfi Coast’s daily life. I’m sure you’ll be able to make some local friends if you stop by regularly since Italians adore chitchatting.

Address: Viao G. Marconi 96, Positan o

15. Live the Dream By Staying at Sirenuse

positano city tour

It’s hard to list all the elegant hotels in Positano, as every corner of this little town shines. Yet somehow, it’s easy to recommend staying (or having aperitivo) at Sirenuse since it’s a one-of-a-kind place. Why? The dreamy view over the Mediterranean, excellent service, and a deep commitment to local tradition.

The Sersales (the family that owns this historic hotel) opened Sirenuse in 1952 and have been offering impeccable experiences ever since. I can hardly think of a more exciting place to go to for an aperitif before dinner.

Head to Aldo’s for a words-can’t-express-it view from a candlelit terrace. Definitely go at sunset. Or try their historic Don’t Worry Bar found in a suite in the living room. It’s a real insiders spot, perfect for a classic cocktail after dinner.

14. Restyle Your Summer Outfits with Maria

positano city tour

You wouldn’t want to miss out on the fashion must-do here, right? Well, Moda Mare Positano is a summer look that has made this tiny town famous all over the world. Long skirts, pastel colors blouses, and classic handmade sandals (which at this point you already customized).

Maria opened her little boutique when Positano was still a fishing village, right after the second world war. Together with her husband, she offered a quick turn-around service for tailored trousers. “Go, take a swim. The trousers will be ready by the time you come back”, she would say to those asking the how-long-does-it-take question.

Today the shop is called Maria Lampo, and it’s a great place for renovating your summer wardrobe. And it’s a fantastic place to get presents for all your friends, sisters, and colleagues. Original, unique, and colorful: that dress you had been dreaming of might be right inside Maria’s boutique.

Address Viale Pasitea 12, Positano

13. Release Your Stress With A Tibetan Bells Massage or Cold Therapy

There’s more than one way to relax, and sometimes you need a little help when you’re a hotel without a spa. I suggest getting in touch with Belinda Rispoli at her wellness center, Royal Divine, where she offers out-of-the-box spa and beauty treatments. She explained to me how much her client’s health means to her, and you’ll be surprised at Belinda’s commitment to healing your body and soul.

You might love trying her cold therapy that stimulates circulation by draining toxins—ideal for hot August days. During the “4 hands massage,” two therapists work together from head to toe to guarantee deep relaxation and healing.

Belinda told me recently that her client’s favorite treatments are the Tibetan bells massage and the psychosomatic treatment. She often has specials during the summer months so ask when you book your treatment. Don’t hesitate to tell her that Maria Betteghella sent you, and that I say “hello!”

Address: Via G. Marconi 121, Positano

12. Go Clubbing in a Cave

positano city tour

This isn’t an activity for everyone, but if you’re a solo traveler or here with your friends and you love nightlife, then heading to Music on the Rocks is perfect for you. There aren’t many places where you can say you went clubbing inside a cave! That make this a pretty unique thing to do, even if clubbing can be found almost anywhere.

You really have to be a night owl to come here though as it doesn’t get busy until after midnight. The DJs play awesome mixes that echo all around in those cave walls. Expect to pay higher prices, but you’re here for the experience anyway!

Address: Località Grotte Dell’incanto, 51

11. Reserve a Private Pompeii & Mt. Vesuvius Day Trip

positano city tour

Why not see Pompeii your way and without sharing the ride with other strangers? That’s exactly why this private boat tour to Pompeii is so popular. Pompeii is pretty close to the Amalfi Coast, and you can’t miss the most famous Roman ruins in the whole world while in Positano!

Make it an easy trip with hotel pickup and a private boat that takes just you and your group to Pompeii for a private tour with an entertaining archaeologist guide. Not enough? How about a second boat ride over to Mt. Vesuvius—the volcano that started the whole thing—for a private tour with a volcanologist? Yeah, that’s a pretty epic day that’s basically hassle free.

Your skipper will navigate you to the closest harbor to Pompeii, avoiding the longer, trickier, traffic-congested coastal drive. That’s why this is one of the best private tour options for seeing Pompeii from Positano.

10. Sample Local Wines in a Converted Cave

positano city tour

You could walk past one of the most incredible wine cellars in Positano and not even know it. Fortunately, you’re reading this list of things you have to do in Positano, so you won’t miss out. The Cellar is a brand new wine-tasting venue that offers elegant service in a unique location. Literally, it’s an old fishing net deposit turned into an exclusive wine-tasting venue.

Giovanni, the owner, comes from a traditional rural family in which grape harvesting has been a tradition for generations. Today, he and his wife Daniela offer a refined wine selection and a taste experience that ranges from local to international bottles served in a cellar that has luxe ambiance.

Of course, you can also sample local meats and cheeses with your wine tasting too. This is why the Cellar is a great plan for a late afternoon or early evening activity. A unique aperitivo.

Pro Tip: Go to the wine shop listed below and ask them to show you the nearby entrance to the Cellar since it’s not on Google yet. They’ll be happy to help.

Address : Via del Saracino 31, Positano

9. Make Your Own Lemon Marmalade and Limoncello

positano city tour

You probably know about the huge lemon culture of the Amalfi Coast, but did you know you can create your own lemon products? Yep! It’s such a fun thing to do for couples visiting Positano. Lemons are used for jams, liqueurs, patisserie, ice creams, and so on. And for good reasons: they taste delicious!

The Amalfi Coast is sunny nearly all year long, and the lemon groves have been cultivated for generations. The rural tradition is equaled only by the culinary one, as the products made with Amalfi coast lemons are unique. No one makes limoncello like the Amalfi Coast does.

So if you’re a fan of lemons and looking for a fun activity, I recommend going to Valentì’s website and booking their limoncello and marmalade class. Even more special is the incredible view you might get if the class happens on the terrace that overlooks Positano bay. You’ll fall in love with Valentino’s passion as he inherited his love for lemons from his mom, Emilia. A true Italian way of keeping traditions alive.

Address: Via G. Marconi 142, Positano

8. Sunbathe on Fornillo’s Sandy Beach

blue sea and beach at fornillo

Prefer a more secluded beach in Positano? Then I recommend trying Fornillo. It’s a bit less known (and less crowded) than the main Spiaggia Grande, which makes it my personal favorite.

Fornillo beach has been awarded both the green and the blue flag, which basically means it’s totally worth going swimming there—and it’s great for families! It’s easy to reach it from Positano, and most locals prefer going swimming there: you’ll just have to walk a few minutes starting from Marina Grande.

Make sure you book a spot in one of Fornillo’s beach clubs, especially during the summer, as the free access area might be packed! Although Fornillo is a local spot, keep in mind that Positano receives tons of tourists in the months of July and August. So even Fornillo will feel busy, but it’s secluded location help it feel a little nicer.

Address: Fornillo Beach

7. Order Lemon Spaghetti On a Secluded Cliffside Patio

people eating at sunset at the sea

Some views are worth paying for and Il Carlino is no exception. Just a 45-second elevator ride through a cave inside the 5-star San Pietro hotel is where I recommend eating dinner with a view away from the crowds. Here, a classy night is guaranteed, together with an excellent dinner and gorgeous view of the sea and Amalfi Coast.

One of the most simple yet delicious dishes served here is lemon spaghetti. It sounds plain but chef Alois Vanlangenaeker has his own secrets that make this plate unique and a customer favorite.

The restaurant is literally at the bottom of a cliff only accessible through the hotel (you don’t have to be a guest!). In order to reach it, you can either take the hotel’s steps down through the vegetable gardens or get a free ride in the elevator carved into the rock. In less than a minute, you’ll be at beach level. Everything is made with local products and the wine selection is fantastic.

Address Via Laurito 2, Positano

6. Picnic at the Hole in the Rocks Above Montepertuso

hole in rock formation with picnic table nearby

Hikers can’t miss climbing to Montepertuso il Buco. It’s a beautiful rock formation with a stunning view of Amalfi and picnic tables nearby! And as you might guess, there’s a legend about the hole since there’s still a strong Catholic tradition here. Some say it was the Virgin Mary herself who made the hole in the mountain after a fight with the devil.

The trek up is no joke since you’re climbing ancient stairs most of the way, but active families even bring their older kids along. There’s more than one way of reaching the hole in the mountain, and it’s quite common to pass by goat herds along the way, especially during springtime. If you want, you can pass through the hole and reach an old water reserve along an overgrown path.

I recommend doing this activity in the early morning or evening during the warmer months and bringing a light snack. But in the cooler months, a mid-day trek for a picnic lunch can’t be beat!

How to get there: You can take the bus to Monteperuso Nicolle or have a taxi drop you at the football field nearby. You’ll see signs to take the stairs. Address : Montepertuso, Positano

5. Cruise to Sorrento and Capri for the Day

positano city tour

It’s a sin not to visit Capri when you’re in Positano. Or anywhere on the Amalfi Coast, really. The easiest way to visit is to book a boat tour so you don’t have to worry about transportation. Just hop on a stylish boat, let the captain tell tales of the sites you see, and even swim right next to the famous Faraglioni rocks.

For the best value, I recommend combining locations on a single tour to get more for your money. You can explore Sorrento and Capri in a single day from Positano! Like Capri, it’s known for its elegance, shops, and culture. Swimming stops, onboard refreshments, new friends to make, and unforgettable sights to see are all you need to make your day trip the best.

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  Capri Guide for more resources.

4. Find Flavio Gioia’s Grave at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta

overhead view of church of santa maria assunta

You’ve probably seen this colorful dome without knowing what it belonged to. Located right at the heart of Positano’s historical center, this church is probably the symbol of the town. Stopping inside the church is a must-do when you’re in Positano.

When you’re inside, be sure to look at the iconic Byzantine representation of the Virgin Mary that stands right above the altar. It’s also worth admiring the majestic organ, the ancient bell tower door, and the gravestone dedicated to Flavio Gioia. Not sure who that is? He’s an Amalfi native from medieval times believed to be the inventor of the compass!

Address: Piazza Flavio Gioia, Positano

3. Walk The Path of the Gods

hiking trail along the amalfi coast

For a longer hiking adventure in the hills of Amalfi, I can’t recommend doing the Path of the Gods enough. Technically, this is just outside of Positano, but it’s really not that far away.

This panoramic hiking route runs 5 miles (8 kilometers) along ancient mule routes and hillside villages on an easy-to-moderate path. You’ve probably seen pictures of it and the name says it all; it really is a divine path. The best part is the scenery. You’ll get some of the best views of the entire Amalfi Coast from up here!

My suggestion is to take the easiest route by starting in Agerola (near Praiano) and heading to Nocelle (towards Positano). This way, the trail gently descends towards the sea for most of the hike.

Once you have reached Nocelle, I highly recommend rewarding yourself by following the trail down a further 300 steps for a swim at the Arienzo beach. From there, you have just one kilometer left to walk back to the center of Positano—easy as pie after your rejuvenating swim!

Pro Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for the red-and-white signs that will lead the way and don’t forget to bring plenty of water with you. In fact, there are not a lot of facilities on the route.

Address : Agerola, Sentiero degli Dei

2. Float Into the Emerald Grotto

positano city tour

You don’t have to go to Capri to see a colorful grotto! The Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Grotto, is one of the gems of the Amalfi Coast. The intense nuances of green that reflect upon the water give the grotto its name though there are some blue hues sometimes.

Visiting it is an absolute must-do if you are in Positano and fun for kids and adults alike. The water is unbelievably clear, so you can see right to the bottom. Although it’s hard to believe, inside the grotto you’ll find an underwater nativity scene that local artisans made back in the 1950s!

Pro Tip: Make sure you book your boat tour between noon and 3 pm. That’s when the best lighting effect happens to make the water really glow.

Address: Via Smeraldo, Conca dei Marini Cost: €8 for boat ride and tour

1. Get a Tan at Positano’s Famous Beach: Spiaggia Grande

umbrellas on beach in positano

That stunning image of an umbrella-filled beach with colorful cliffside homes in Italy? Yeah. It’s this beach. And it may be crowded and touristy but it’s too iconic not to put as our number one thing to do in Positano.

Spiaggia Grande (or Marina Grande) is Positano’s main beach. Easy to reach, it’s the perfect spot for a quick swim or a relaxing afternoon. Just soak in that stunning view over Li Galli, the famous tiny islands where legends say that sirens seduced Ulysses with their chants. Or turn to view the jaw-dropping scene of the colorful tiny houses on Positano’s cliffs.

Marina Grande is also a great departure spot for a kayak tour along the coast or boat trips around Amalfi . If you’re a nightlife seeker, then definitely stop here after dinner. During the summer, Marina Grande becomes a meeting point for nightlife lovers living the Italian dream.

Pro Tip: Only a small part of the beach is free, and it is also usually overcrowded. I highly recommend renting a sun lounge (around €35) from one of the clubs here to have some privacy and a bit of shade.

Address: Marina Grande, Positano

Where To Stay 0n Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is an amazing cluster of cliffside towns with great beaches, food, and views! Plan where to stay in this magnificent area in the best towns.

Positano is one of Italy’s most picturesque cities, located on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy.

The city is known for its dramatic cliffs and brightly colored buildings that line the winding streets.

But is Positano worth visiting?

I asked Sammy Green from My Blonde Bucket List to share her take on the idealized Italian destination.

Positano is a popular destination for tourists from around the world, offering stunning views and plenty of exciting things to see and do.

From relaxing days spent lounging by the beach to exploring centuries-old churches and monuments, whether you’re visiting for a few days or planning an extended stay, here are some essential Positano travel tips for making your trip unforgettable!

Is Positano worth visiting?

This is an image of the famous beach in Positano, Italy during the off-season.

Absolutely! Positano is a breathtakingly beautiful city that is well worth exploring. From its sweeping views to its rich culture and history, there is something for everyone in this fantastic Italian destination.

It’s a terrific city to explore with friends and family, or even if you’re traveling solo .

Tips for Visiting Positano

1. make reservations in advance.

positano city tour

Decent hotels, restaurants, and other attractions can get booked up quickly in Positano, so making reservations as far as possible is best.

Being organized will help avoid any disappointment–this is one of the most important Positano tips!

This is particularly important if you plan to visit during the high season in the summer months.

2. Remember, many restaurants close in the afternoon

If you want an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, you might need to plan ahead.

Throughout Italy, many restaurants close in the afternoon between lunch and dinner because of riposo, Italy’s siesta period .

If there’s a restaurant, you definitely want to eat at, confirm their hours in advance and make that reservation.

The same goes for many of the locally-owned, designer boutiques in town, too.

3. Be prepared for stairs

positano city tour

A hilly city means stairs–and lots of them! Many of the streets in Positano are too narrow for cars, so you’ll often be walking up and down flights of stairs.

This means Positano isn’t the best Italian city to visit if you need wheelchair accessibility .

A pair of comfortable walking shoes are going to be your best friend! If you’re staying in Positano, looking into how you access your accommodation may be necessary.

Having a trolley bag that is easy to maneuver over cobblestones and steps could make your life a whole lot easier, or even better, a backpack may be your best bet if there’s going to be a fair amount of steps to climb.

4. Plan ahead if you get carsick or seasick

Positano is a hilly city with tight and windy roads, so if you get carsick easily, you’ll want to be prepared.

Similarly, if you’re prone to seasickness, then make sure to take the necessary precautions before taking a boat ride.

Having some motion sickness medication on hand is a good idea, and if you choose to take a public bus, try to get a seat near the front to minimize the effects.

5. Go during the off-season to avoid tourists

positano city tour

Positano is a popular tourist destination and can get crowded during peak season.

However, visiting during the off-season (autumn and winter) is much quieter.

Although it’ll be a bit too cold to enjoy a sun lounger on the Marina Grande Beach, Spiaggia Grande, underneath a bright beach umbrella, you’ll find fewer people and lower prices!

6. You need to see the city from the water on a boat tour

To appreciate the beauty of Positano, you need to see it from the beautiful blue water.

Taking a boat tour is definitely worth it; this is where you’ll get the best view of the dramatic cliffs and the colorful houses that line the coast.

There are plenty of boat tour operators in Positano, so feel free to shop around for the best price.

7. Make sure to try limoncello or anything made with Amalfi lemons

positano city tour

You have yet to go to Italy unless you’ve had limoncello .

The Amalfi Coast is known for its lemons, so try some local delicacies, such as limoncello or any dish made with these delicious lemons – you won’t regret it!

You can find more information here if you need to learn more about Italy’s drinking laws.

8. Don’t skip the city’s museums

Positano is full of stunning museums, churches, and art galleries worth checking out.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta church is a sight to behold with its colorful Byzantine-style domes.

And don’t miss the Museo della Carta museum, which is dedicated to producing handmade paper.

9. Explore the city on foot

positano city tour

The best way to get around Positano is by walking, as it is more scenic and less chaotic than driving or taking public transport.

Positano is small enough that most attractions can be reached on foot, so you can easily explore the city on foot.

As mentioned above, the streets of Positano can be relatively narrow, which makes parking pretty tricky, so exploring on foot is much less stressful.

10. Carry cash with you

Be sure to have cash on you at all times, as some of the businesses in smaller towns, such as Positano, don’t accept credit cards.

You’ll only need a small amount, but it saves being caught out if you’re super thirsty on a hot day and desperate to buy water!

11. Make sure to spend some time on the beach

positano city tour

Positano is also worth visiting for its gorgeous beaches.

Spiaggia Grande, Positano’s main beach, is one of the town’s most famous photo spots, with incredible panoramic views of the city rising above the beach.

But if you’re looking for a more secluded experience, there are plenty of options nearby.

Laurito Beach is just a short bus ride away and can be accessed by a stairwell from a small piazza opposite Hotel San Pietro.

This tiny cove is surrounded by craggy rocks and cliffs, and it’s home to the Treville Beach Club, with its restaurant and hotel rooms providing some peace from the rest of the city

Further along the coast is Arienzo Beach, a small pebbly beach at the end of a 300-step trek, with both public beach and private beach areas.

The Arienzo Beach Club offers an excellent aperitivo service, including a shuttle boat back to Positano’s main pier.

12. Save money on accommodation by volunteering in a hostel

Volunteering in a hostel is a fantastic way to save money while traveling in expensive places such as Positano.

It also allows you to stay in a particular location for a lot longer and truly immerse yourself in it.

Become familiar with the pros and cons of volunteering in a hostel to decide whether this could be for you or not.

13. It’s easy to take day trips from here to other cities on the Amalfi Coast

positano city tour

Positano is an excellent base for exploring other cities on the Amalfi Coast.

You can easily take day trips to nearby towns such as Sorrento, Salerno, and Ravello.

To get around, you can either rent a car or take one of the frequent buses that run between the various towns.

Positano Travel Tips: FAQs

positano city tour

Where is Positano, Italy?

Positano is a town located on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It is known for its amazing views and is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.

If you’re flying directly to the Amalfi Coast, you will likely land in Naples before making your way to Positano.

The closest major city and the international airport is Naples, which is about two hours away by car or train.

How expensive is Positano?

Positano is an expensive destination as it is a popular tourist area.

However, if you shop around, there are still plenty of good deals to be found.

Prepare for restaurants, accommodation, and activities to be more costly than in other parts of Italy.

Another tip for visiting Positano is that if you want to save money on accommodation, staying in Sorrento is a good option since it takes a little time to reach Positano by car.

Is Positano walkable?

Positano is a very walkable city; however, you need to navigate stairs and steep hills to get around.

The city is small enough that you can explore it on foot, but you’ll need to walk through narrow streets and winding staircases to reach the center of town and the beach.

The main attractions in Positano are all within walking distance of each other, so it’s easy to get around without relying on public transportation.

Once you’re above the city, buses and taxis are available to get around for anyone who prefers not to walk.

Is Positano crowded?

Positano can be quite crowded during the peak tourist season, which runs from April to October.

Throughout this season, the city is filled with tourists and locals, making it difficult to find a quiet spot.

However, if you visit outside of these months, you’ll find that Positano is much less crowded and more peaceful.

Is Positano safe?

Positano is generally a safe destination for tourists, but it is always important to take precautions when traveling.

As with any city, pickpocketing and other petty crimes can occur, so it’s smart to keep your valuables close and be aware of your surroundings.

When is the best time to go to Positano?

The best time to go is in the spring and autumn when the temperature is milder, and the crowds are smaller.

However, summer is still a great time to visit as temperatures can reach up to 30°C, perfect for swimming in the crystal clear azure waters of the Amalfi Coast.

The city can get quite crowded during the peak summer season, so it’s best to book your accommodation in advance if you plan on visiting during this time.

Since it’s such a coastal city, you’ll probably want to miss the cooler months if you want to make the most of the gorgeous beaches.

What are the best restaurants in Positano?

Positano is known for its delicious seafood-based regional cuisine.

Some of the best restaurants to try include Ristorante Max Positano, Terrazza Celè, and Il Ritrovo.

Try one of the local trattorias, such as La Tagliata, Cafe Latteria, or Il Grottino Azzurro, for a more budget-friendly option.

Osteria le Tre Sorelle is a family-run beachfront restaurant that has been around since the 1950s, offering fresh, traditional seafood options.

Palazzo Murat Restaurant is an excellent choice for those looking for something more refined.

For a truly unique dining experience, book a table at the Rada Beach Bistrot. Situated right on the beach, you can enjoy your meal with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

How to Get to Positano

positano city tour

Bus travel is the cheapest and most convenient way to get to Positano from Naples.

You can take a direct bus from Naples Airport or the central railway station.

The journey is around two hours and is relatively inexpensive compared to taxis or private transfers.

Car or Taxi

Thankfully, you don’t need to rent a car yourself to get to Positano; you can hire a car or take a taxi from Naples Airport.

It is quite a bit more expensive than the bus but much more convenient if you have lots of luggage or need to be somewhere quickly.

Trains run between Naples Central Station and the Sorrento train station, the closest railway to Positano.

Unfortunately, there are no direct local or high-speed trains to Positano from Naples.

You can take a bus or taxi from Sorrento to the beautiful town center of Positano.

The drive takes just over half an hour.

My favorite way to reach Positano and all of the other famous coastal towns on the Amalfi Coast is by taking a ferry from the Molo Beverello port in Naples.

You can buy ferry tickets from ticket stands at the port.

The boat trip only takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and you’ll be met with jaw-dropping views on the way.

Private Transfer

You can book a private transfer from Naples Airport or Naples Central Station.

This is by far the most comfortable and convenient way to get to Positano, as your driver will take you directly there without any stops.

However, this is also the most expensive option as it is usually charged per person or vehicle.

What to Pack for Positano, Italy

positano city tour

Positano is a beach town, so you’ll need to make sure you pack beachwear, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

You should also bring some light clothing such as dresses, shorts, and t-shirts – basically anything that’s easy to throw over your swimsuit after you’ve been for a dip in the ocean.

If you’re visiting in the cooler months, you’ll want a couple of options for layers. Some days are cooler in the mornings and evenings but warm up during daylight hours, so you’ll want to be prepared for the different options.

Remember comfortable shoes for exploring the city on foot too!

Finally, be sure to remember to pack your camera. Positano is full of beautiful views and begging you to take a snapshot or two.

Is Positano Worth Visiting?: Wrap-Up

By now, I hope you agree that Positano is definitely worth visiting. Its incredible views, delicious seafood cuisine, and stunning beaches make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy some of Italy’s best sights.

Stay for a weekend or stay for a week!

Remember these Positano travel tips when planning your trip, and you’re sure to have a fantastic time in this beautiful destination.
