Although they don’t dry quite as quickly as all synthetic underwear, the Smartwool briefs should dry fairly much faster than cotton underwear. You can wash them at night and expect them to be ready to go in the morning.

The main downside to using the Smartwool briefs for travelling is that they aren’t the best choice for hot climates. Although known mainly for their men’s briefs, they also make a range of excellent bikini briefs, including this pair. You’ll get hours of soft, wool covered comfort, as well as great breathability and anti odor protection.

The merino wool construction uses varied knit textures, which increases the amount of air that reaches your crotch. Although this doesn’t sound pretty, it means that you won’t have as much sweat buildup, and you also won’t heat up throughout the day.

They feature a fairly wide elastic band that gives your a comfortable, tight fit without too much squeeze. Everything stays where it should, so you shouldn’t have to worry about the underwear riding up your ass.

The wool also dries quickly, which makes the pair great for wicking moisture as you move around. If you need to wash them, just hang them up and they’ll be dry in a few hours.

The only real downside to the Smartwool bikini briefs is the price. The pair will cost you a fair penny, so you may want to mix in some lower cost underwear to round out your travel collection. But given the quality and comfort, you’ll be happy that you bought at least one pair.

5. Underworks Disposable Cotton Underwear

A Brief Stay: Carrying around a bag of dirty underwear isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. So why worry about washing your underwear ? With the Underworks, just wear, take off, and throw away. This pair of underwear isn’t going to win any awards for its comfort, but it’s a great option for travelers who want to pack lightly.

The briefs are made entirely out of cotton. Although we don’t usually recommend cotton for travel, these are pretty thin, helping circulate air and prevent overheating. They do a decent job of wicking moisture as well, although you might start to get a bit swampy by the end of the day.

The fit on the underwear is much better than you would expect from a disposable pair. They won’t ride up much, and they feel soft throughout the day. You won’t want to write home about it, but overall wearing the underwear is a pleasant experience.

The biggest draw to this pair of underwear is the convenience. Worried about carrying around a week’s worth of dirty underwear? Then just throw each pair away when you’re done. It’s not a great long term solution, but it works well when you’re on short, active trips where doing laundry isn’t an option.

Best Travel Underwear: Buying Guide

The right pair of travel underwear is all about going the distance. Your favorite pair of soft briefs may be great for work, but can turn into an itchy, swampy mess on a plane. You’ll also be moving around a lot more when you travel, so you need underwear that won’t put your nether regions in a vice grip.

Breathable Travel Underwear

Nothing taints a plane ride more than an itchy taint. Look for underwear that are built to breathe, allowing air to circulate.

Cotton underwear, while soft, tends to trap moisture. They may be comfortable for an hour or two, but then they turn into a sweaty mess.

Wool and synthetic materials will do a better job with ventilation, which will prevent moisture buildup and keep you at a comfortable temperature. More air also means less odor, keeping you fresher for longer.

Moisture Wicking Travel Underwear

There’s nothing worse than running out of underwear on the road. You never know when you’ll need to wash a pair to wear the next day, so try to find underwear that will dry quickly.

In general, synthetic materials will dry much faster than cotton, which can take a full day to dry out. This will make it easier to pack light, as you can wash your underwear on the go without having to wait for them to dry.

Odor Eliminating Travel Underwear

You won’t want to be the smelly person on the plane or bus. Choose a pair of underwear that has anti odor properties so that you’ll still smell civilized when you get off the plane.

There are a number of pairs of travel underwear that have built in anti bacterial layers, so that you can wear them for long periods without a noticeable stench. You may also be able to wear them a few times, allowing you to pack light.

Lightweight Travel Underwear

When your travelling, you want to carry as little weight as possible. Thin underwear is best for long flights and days moving around. You can also stuff more pairs into your bag, so you won’t run out of fresh underwear during your trip.

Most Comfortable Travel Underwear

You don’t want to sit on the plane with a pair of underwear riding up your ass. A good pair of travel underwear provides a nice cushion as you sit, but is still thin and light enough to let you move around freely.

Whether you like briefs or trunks, a man needs a solid pair of underwear when traveling, and these six pairs offer everything a good adventurer needs. 

That pack of whitey-tighties you bought at Target was probably a good bargain, but they’re not exactly ideal if you have travel plans in your future. Standard cotton traps moisture (and odor), and the fit of standard underwear doesn’t exactly help with mobility or flexibility. 

What we need when we’re traveling (whether it’s on a plane or along a trail) is underwear that can wick away moisture while being super comfortable and flexible. In some scenarios, you’ll want heavier, warmer underwear, and in others, you’ll want something light and breezy.

Made with a waffle-like knit fabric, these underwear are unbelievably stretchy and soft. They move with your body, don’t bunch up, and don’t feel constricting. 

Plus, the brand’s AIRKNIT fabric is made from nylon microfibers that are both moisture-wicking and odor-fighting, so they don’t just feel good, but they’re also built for performance. These certainly aren’t the cheapest pair of underwear out there, but they are absolutely worth the price.

Best men’s travel underwear for cold weather

Smartwool intraknit boxer brief.

Smartwool is known for their high-quality merino products and has long been a favorite for outdoors enthusiasts. Their Intraknit boxer briefs are also perfect for anyone who will be spending time outdoors during their travels – especially in cooler weather. The TENCEL fabric combines a blend of materials like merino and lyocell to create a very stretchy yet relatively thick pair of underwear. They form to your body and have minimal seams to reduce chafing (another great addition if wearing under layers during cold weather).

What makes them so great is that they’re both breathable thanks to the fabric, while also being snug and thick. They’re warm yet ventilated, which is exactly what you want. Best budget men’s travel underwear

Wirarpa ultra-soft briefs.

If you are looking for a cheaper option, Wirarpa is a brand you should check out. I originally had no idea what these underwear were, but I kept noticing guys in the locker room wearing them and they looked super soft and lightweight. After searching on Amazon, I saw that they have a 4.5-star rating based on almost 19,000 reviews…which is pretty damn impressive. 

That was a little over a year ago and since then these have become my go-to for daily wear. I’ve worn these while hiking in Wisconsin, at the gym, on airplanes, during long drives, and pretty much everywhere in between. They’re soft, stretchy, comfy, breathable, and have held up really well in the year I’ve owned them. Plus, they’re super cheap. Does it get any better than that? These are also available as a trunk.

Best athletic men’s travel underwear

For starters, we need to talk about what made BN3TH famous – their ball pouch. It sounds like a gimmick at first, but BN3TH makes their underwear differently, having specially-made ball pouches that don’t smoosh your banana and walnuts up against your body, and instead give them a dedicated space to have room to breathe, while also being secure and kept in place.

Personally, I really like briefs, but not everyone does. Some guys still love old-school boxers, and if you’re one of them then you’ll want one of REI’s co-op boxer briefs. Yes, these are boxer briefs and not boxers. But trust me, traditional boxers aren’t fun when traveling. When you’re on-the-go, when you’re sweating, when you’re constantly moving (and often wearing the same outfit for the entire day), you don’t want loose cotton boxers underneath your pants getting all sweaty and bunched up. 

But if you like the loose feel of boxers, REI’s boxer briefs are a great choice. They’re more relaxed than other boxer briefs and they even have a functional fly. Plus, being made of polyester, they’re much softer and smoother than traditional boxers, meaning you’ll be way more comfy. 

Best natural and sustainable men’s travel underwear

Lightweight, flat-seamed, and complete with a four-way stretch design. Already these are a great pair of underwear. But these boxer briefs are even better because they’re made using sustainable organic bamboo. Bamboo literally grows like a weed…worse than a weed actually, able to grow 3-feet in a single day. It doesn’t need fertilizer or pesticides, it doesn’t even need much water – it’s an excellent sustainable alternative to cotton. 

But the Motion Boxer Brief isn’t your standard bamboo underwear either. They’re not barky, rough, or fibrous. They’re soft…very, very soft. Some of the softest underwear I own. These are also true boxer briefs, not trunks, so they’re a bit longer than the other pairs on this list, making them perfect for guys who like the longer fit.

what I’m looking for probably doesn’t exist. need low rise so the band wont roll with my tire on the waist. average man size but looking for a pouch to support everybody without shrinking after every wash and with sweating. If clothes designers would put as much thought into grown up mens underwear there would probably be fewer wars.

The Best Travel Underwear for Men

Comfort, performance, and style. All important.

I've traveled all over the world -- and few items are more important in the pack list than a good pair of underwear. Whether you're the type of person that is comfortable going weeks at a time on just a pair or two, or you like to pack a solid assortment of options, these are a few of the best I've found over the years.

First off, I'm a briefs guy. There's no room in my suitcase or drawers at home for anything else. If you're rocking classic boxers, good for you but I don't know how you do it. For the best blend of comfort and utility, it's briefs all the way.

Regardless of your preference, if you're still wearing cotton, you're doing it wrong . Get yourself one of these fine options to swaddle your nether regions and you won't be disappointed on your next hike or backpacking trip.

Ex Officio Give-n-Go Briefs

These are the classics. ExOfficio has been making great travel underwear for years, and the Give-n-Gos are a tried and true purchase. Nothing flashy about it, no crazy prints, just great performance. I've worn too few pairs of these for much longer than I'm willing to admit. I once brought only 2 pairs on a 5-week trip to Southeast Asia . They'll last you for years and the moisture-wicking will keep the funk at bay.

Saxx Volt Boxer Brief

A new-ish entrant, Saxx is probably my current favorite. I've worn these hiking in Peru, backcountry skiing all season, and road tripping around British Columbia. The Volt has a great blend of performance, and casual comfort.

They difference here is definitely the Ballpark Pouch. I won't go into too much detail here, but guys, you can figure it out. The "hammock" is excellent at maintaining stability and preventing chaffing -- you'll notice the difference immediately. They also reversed the seams, so the more "comfortable" side of the stitching is on the inside. I don't know how much of a difference this really makes, but they sure are comfortable. As expected for a performance brief, the wick moisture great as well. Plus, you get a bunch of great styles. I'd rather wear cool looking underwear than not 🤷‍♂️.The one criticism I have seen (but haven't experienced yet) is that some pairs can ride up the thighs a bit. Not sure if this is due to design, or fit issues though. More testing will be needed.

Smartwool Merino 150 Brief

Tried and true, I have several pairs of Smartwool briefs that I really like. The merino wool makes for a lightweight, super comfortable fit that stays cool in hot weather and warm in cooler weather. As expected for merino wool -- if you haven't made the switch from synthetic or tried wool baselayers, you're missing out. My Saxx feel a  little bit more performance oriented, so my Smartwools tend to be worn more around town or on shorter days. But that's just personal preference.

The size we tested is pretty compact, but there are larger sizes available, too.

Small but mighty, this buttery leather pouch from Leatherology is the perfect carry-all for everyday essentials. When we commuted to the office, we found the bag was the ideal size for keeping items like credit cards, a driver’s license, and some makeup essentials together in one place. It was easy to fish the small pouch out of a larger bag and the smooth zipper helped with getting to the essentials quickly and seamlessly. We appreciated that the bag has a flat bottom so it can stand upright on a table — a convenient feature for hotel bathroom or an airplane tray table to make the most out of small spaces. The water-resistant lining makes cleaning the interior a hassle-free experience, and the soft leather material didn’t scuff or scratch during testing even when sitting in a purse next to keys. If the small size is too compact for your needs, it also comes in convenient medium and large sizes, too.

One thing to note is that you likely wouldn’t be able to fit any tech like a laptop or tablet in this case, but you might be able to squeeze an eReader in depending on the size.

The small and medium pouches are perfect for undergarments or T-shirts, while the largest bag can fit shoes, jeans, or a lightweight jacket. We also found that the two smaller pouches can hold technology and accessories if you’re using a backpack or a tote bag. The recycled nylon material is sturdy and well-constructed, but it’s unstructured like the brand’s reusable shopping bags, so fragile items like skincare or jewelry might not be as well protected. When you’re not using the pouches, you can lay them completely flat or fold them for hassle-free storage.

Our bottle of hair conditioner spilled in the bag, and no liquid escaped through the zipper or material. 

There aren’t any other pockets on the interior or exterior.

This do-it-all pouch from Aloha is made with the brand’s splash-proof fabric, designed to be ultra-lightweight, packable, and water-resistant. During testing, we used it as a toiletry bag for a weekend getaway and noticed a conditioner bottle spilled everywhere inside the bag. Luckily, the fabric and zippers contained the mess, and it didn’t leak into the rest of our luggage, so we think this pouch could double as an excellent swimsuit bag to transport a wet suit if needed. With three separate sections, we loved how easy it was to designate each pocket for toiletries like skincare and a travel toothbrush or tech accessories like phone chargers and earbuds. We packed toiletries in the bag for multiple trips and, while nothing leaked, we appreciated that the lining is waterproof and can be wiped clean for easier upkeep. The pockets are also expandable so you can adjust the capacity as needed for short or long trips alike. Just remember: the more you pack, the bigger the pouch will be, causing it to take up more space in a carry-on or backpack.

Best Waterproof

Nite ize runoff waterproof travel pouch with tru zip.

This waterproof bag keeps things dry and is easy to pack away, thanks to its flat, slim profile.

Likely designed to maintain its waterproof seal, the zipper is difficult to open and close.

We tested this bag not once, but twice and were impressed both times with its durability, flat design, and, of course, waterproof seal and material. We stuffed this bag full before completely submerging it in a tank of water and are happy to report that everything inside stayed perfectly dry. We can definitely see ourselves bringing this with us on a beach vacation or tucked away inside our pool bag for some extra peace of mind. And while it’s not a terribly large pouch, you can definitely fit the essentials: phone, wallet, chapstick, and even a phone charger.

The zipper was a bit difficult to use and it didn’t glide smoothly, but we felt reassured this small downside was likely to maintain a waterproof seal. The plastic felt very durable, and we liked that we could see everything in the pouch through the clear front. There are also little loops on either side that you can hook on to a bag, raft, or paddleboard .

Otm makeup bag.

There is a layer of insulation built-into the pouch for regulating the temperature of the contents.

The zipper doesn’t run the entire length of the pouch, so it can be difficult to get items in and out. 

If you’ve ever left lipstick in your purse on a hot day and found that it’s completely melted and lost its shape, then you need this insulated pouch to protect expensive makeup from the elements. It’s made with a layer of Pristinium insulation designed to regulate the temperature of the interior of the pouch to keep the contents at room temperature. I personally tested this cylinder pouch by placing my most expensive makeup in it and using a hair dryer to heat the exterior. Luckily, I found that the contents inside remained perfectly cool and didn’t heat up even though the exterior was hot to the touch. I also took the pouch with me in my checked bag for a ski trip, and it did an amazing job at protecting my toiletries. The only slight downside I ran into is that the zipper is a little short, which makes it harder to pack and take items out.

You can toss these pouches in the washing machine to extend the lifespan.

Due to their envelope shape, the pouches don’t stand upright.

It’s no secret that traveling can take a toll on bags so we recommend these durable and machine-washable pouches from Kusshi. The duo is made with thick and protective neoprene material that wards off water and stains while providing a layer of cushioning between the packed contents and the rest of your luggage. This is particularly helpful for traveling with fragile items like sunglasses, jewelry, or skincare bottles. We used the smaller pouch for travel essentials like hand sanitizer and a passport, and the larger pouch protected our toiletries like lotion, face wash, tinted moisturizer , and other makeup products. If anything spills on the inside or outside of the pouch, all you have to do is toss them in the wash and they’ll come out looking brand new and ready for the next adventure.

The pouch is large enough to fit tablets, eReaders, and various other travel necessities.

It only comes in black.

For a one-and-done travel pouch, this spacious one from MZ Wallace can fit everything you need for commuting near and far. It’s plenty big enough to fit technology like phones, tablets, and eReaders (or paper notebooks for non-techies), and there are three zippered pockets on the inside for smaller items that can get lost easily like lip balm, credit cards, or keys. Made with a quilted recycled Oxford material and leather zipper pulls, this pouch is as stylish as it is functional and durable. The only thing that could make this pouch any better is if it had a waterproof lining on the inside for accidental spills and more color options, but otherwise, we think it’s the perfect carry-all bag.

Other Travel Pouches We Liked

There were a few travel pouches that we deemed worthy of an honorable mention but didn’t make our short list. 

Stoney Clover Lane Travel Pouch : This clear pouch makes it easy to see what’s inside of it, but we noticed that the fabric lining got dirty easily in testing.

Lululemon Command the Day Dopp Kit 5L : It’s relatively small for a dopp kit, but it has a good number of pockets for organizing toiletries and tech accessories.

L.L.Bean Boat and Tote Zip Pouch : The cotton canvas material feels high-quality and well-made, but the capacity isn’t quite big enough to store the essentials in our opinion.

We hand-selected 26 travel pouches to test from trusted travel brands like Cotopaxi, Béis, and Calpak to see which ones held up during our trips. After testing single pouches and sets of two or three, over a dozen earned glowing reviews for quality and functionality. 

We took notes of any special features that make the pouches unique and packed each pouch with small essentials to observe the capacity, design, and organization. Our favorite dopp kits and tech organizers were filled to the brim with pockets, compartments, and separated sections for seamlessly organizing accessories and toiletries. The best sets we tested came with a variety of pouch sizes for packing various items like clothing, wet swimsuits, makeup, eReaders, passports, and more. We also made sure to test a variety of singular pouches for one-and-done shoppers, trying several options with special features like waterproof linings, insulation, and plenty of interior pockets.

The above list contains our favorite pouches, which we will continue to long-term test over the course of six months to make sure they hold up. We will update this article as we continue to test even more travel pouches that deserve a recommendation.

If you’re planning to use a travel pouch as a toiletry bag, consider purchasing a dopp kit, which is specifically designed for toiletries and skincare products. For those that travel with a lot of technology, opt for a tech organizer pouch since they generally have more pockets and compartments. A set that comes with multiple pouches is the most versatile option for those looking for multiple sizes. If you plan to use your travel pouches at the beach or pool, you should look for a waterproof option.

Pay attention to size

The size of a travel pouch can vary greatly from something you can carry in a small crossbody bag to something much larger that can hold a laptop. In general, dopp kits and tech organizers will be wider than a typical envelope-style pouch that has a more versatile design. Travel pouches also come in various shapes like envelope, square, and cylindrical, so you’ll also want to think about how much room the pouch might take up once it’s packed in a carry-on or backpack. Take a look at the dimensions of the pouches if you’re purchasing online so that you know exactly how big (or small) it will be.

Look at special features

Just like size and shape, all travel pouches feature different designs. Some pouches boast special features like waterproof linings, insulation, zippered pockets, ripstop fabric, and water-resistant exteriors. Depending on what your needs are, checking the product description is the best way to see if the pouch fits what you’re looking for.

You’ve booked your plane ticket and the time of departure is fast approaching? After the joys of such a decision, comes the question of knowing what to put in your suitcase to go to Moscow. No need to panic, we have prepared a very complete list of the essential things to bring to make sure you don’t miss anything once you are there.

In order to leave no room for unforeseen events, it’s of course preferable to go through this list a few days before leaving rather than the day before departure, as you might miss some items.

Take the time to read and download it in order to identify the things that you absolutely must pack and that you might miss and that could make you lose time and money if you forget them.

Peak Design

Hands-on: peak design released a smaller tech pouch, and it’s perfect.

Peak Design’s Tech Pouch has long been a fantastic travel companion for storing cords, camera batteries, chargers, and everything in between, but it’s almost too big. A new version of the Tech Pouch was just released as an alternative, and it’s probably never coming out of my travel bag.

If you’re unfamiliar with Peak Design, it’s a company that has long stood for developing quality gear for photographers, though it’s expanded into the travel market and tech side of things as well. Now, the company produces some of our favorite chargers, MagSafe-compatible cases, and now, Tech Pouches.

As simple as it sounds, Peak Design has implemented a lot of cool features into the design of the smaller Tech pouch, which comes in a scaled-down package. Just like with the brand’s new Ultralight Packing Cubes, the pouch is stitched so that it can expand when filled but folds relatively flat. There are “origami” pockets inside that expand when the pouch is at full stretch but close flat when it isn’t. This allows you to take up very little space when you only need a couple of items.

Inside, there is a spot for a pen or Apple Pencil and a few little slots for SD Cards or other little items about the same size. The other side has three pockets for larger slim items, like an SSD or thin battery packs. Of course, you can also store travel documents or other smaller items you might otherwise stuff into a backpack. On the back, Peak Design added a hidden carrying handle stitched into the rear panel, as well as two snap cords for conversion into a sling bag.

The original Tech Pouch is just as wide as the new one at just under 10 inches, but it holds less and, by extension, takes up less space in your bag. Instead of a 2L capacity, the new Small Tech Pouch holds 1L, enough but not too much that you’re struggling to fit it into your carry-on or personal airline item.

That’s enough for a few items I know I’ll need when I’m away at an event or just on vacation. That can generally hold several cords, chargers, and small accessories. If you really want to, you can stuff the Small Tech Pouch, but the smaller size is meant for those who don’t need a full 2L worth of capacity. In the photo below, I can fit these items easily, and then some:

Other than the batteries for my camera, I really only need these essentials for travel. Small items that don’t fit into these categories can go in the pockets of my backpack or duffel, and the batteries will go into an easy-access pocket.

How to Pack for a Trip to Russia

What should i pack for russia.

One of the biggest questions before travelling anywhere, is what to pack. But for those going on a Russian tour, this can be simpler than expected because essentially, Russia only has two seasons, winter and summer. The leaves turn golden for a mere two or three weeks before the temperatures rapidly drop and winter begins, and spring is more of a melting period, with snow and ice seen even as late as May.

Read on to find out what to pack, and how to be comfortable and prepared in every situation.

What clothes to wear in Russia?

Clothes for winter.

Russia is spectacularly beautiful in the wintertime. A dusting of snow covers the palaces, churches and museums, and the icy forests truly look like something out of a fairy tale. But regardless of the magical atmosphere, the outside world is generally very cold. In the cities you will most likely be visiting, winter temperatures are in the range of -10 to -20 degrees Celsius, or 14 to -4 degrees Fahrenheit, but can be even lower.

Layers are vital. For maximum comfort (and safety), bring sweatshirts or hoodies, warm long trousers or extra thick tights, and thermal underwear. A long, warm coat is highly recommended. Not only will it keep you insulated from the cold, but if you slip on the ice it will cushion you and protect your clothes. And of course, it goes without saying that you must bring a hat, scarf and gloves. Ideally, very warm gloves, a fur or wool hat which covers your ears, and a scarf which can be wrapped around your face as well.

Even if the outside world is an icy -30, the inside of Russian buildings remain toasty and warm - heating is generated in a centralised location and switched on in September/October, providing automatic and constant heating for all the buildings in the locality and Russians like it very warm indoors. So, make sure to also bring indoor clothes and lighter layers - a suitcase full of only thick jumpers will do you no favours when you’re inside.

One of the most vital items on your list should be a warm pair of waterproof shoes, as Russia’s sidewalks and streets transform into a quagmire of slush and snow during winter. Shoes should have grippy treads as ice is often more problematic than snow, and the pavement can turn into an uneven mountain of black ice. Make sure to bring warm socks, preferably those sold in hiking/outdoor shops.

For those travelling to Siberia , the weather will be significantly colder, so pack accordingly. If you plan on doing activities such as skiing or snowboarding then bring waterproof trousers, and sunglasses are a good idea if you will spend a lot of time outside in the snow.

Clothes for summer

Despite its reputation, Russia isn’t always covered in snow. Summer is the perfect time to explore the country. Take a stroll any time of day or night, appreciate the White Nights in northern Russia, or go on a camping trip. Temperatures are generally in the range of 20 - 30 degrees Celsius, or 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Air conditioning is not a common sight in Russia, and Russian people have an innate fear of drafts so even on public transport in the middle of summer, windows are often kept shut. Lightweight and breathable clothing is your best bet, and a sunhat and sunglasses are essential items.

The weather can still be unpredictable, so bring a lightweight jacket and jumper for cooler evenings, and an umbrella too, especially if you’re visiting St. Petersburg . Russians dress modestly so you may feel uncomfortable in anything very short or low cut. To be respectful when visiting Russia’s churches, bring a scarf to cover your head and shoulders and a bottom layer of modest length.

Clothes for going out

There is a famous saying that ‘good clothes open all doors’ - and it’s safe to say that Russians dress impeccably when going to the theatre, a nice restaurant, or a nightclub. You do not have to bring a tuxedo or an evening gown, as low-key elegance is better than extravagance. For men, a nice shirt, smart trousers and shoes won’t go amiss. And for women, smart trousers and top or an elegant dress, and heels or nice boots. In winter, it is perfectly normal to change shoes at the theatre cloakroom if you don’t want to risk your high heels on the ice. Upmarket Russian nightclubs often have strict ‘face control’ who turn away those who they consider to be badly dressed, so bring a stylish outfit.

TRAVELERS ASK: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

It’s perfectly acceptable to wear jeans in Russia. Denim is enormously popular among Russians and you will be allowed into museums, churches and restaurants wearing jeans. However, Russians love to dress up, so wear smarter clothes for upmarket restaurants, nightclubs or the theatre. Jeans alone are insufficient for the Russian winter, so pack thermal underwear or tights accordingly.

Personal items and toiletries

You should bring insect repellent if visiting during summer, especially when travelling to Siberia - mosquitoes and horseflies have a voracious appetite. And don’t forget your sun cream!

Bring tissues, wet wipes and hand sanitiser. Public toilets are not very hygienic anywhere in Russia.

Russia has plenty of toiletry and cosmetic shops, so you won’t be in trouble if you forget your favourite shampoo or makeup. But make sure to bring any medication that you may need, as you may not be able to get it when you’re in Russia. Also, it’s a good idea to double check that your medication is legal in Russia - see Russian Customs Rules .

Bring a few different bags. A travel belt is the best way to safely carry your money and passports, and a small handbag or daysack will allow you to comfortably explore any Russian town or city. Russia uses two pin plug sockets (same as Europe) so remember your travel adaptors. One of the best tips for travelling abroad is to bring an extension cord from your home country with an adapter. For travelling on the Trans-Siberian Express or other long distance trains, a good quality portable charger will prove a lifesaver. Bring sleeping clothes which you would feel comfortable wearing while in a public space, slippers or sandals, and earplugs and an eye mask.

And lastly, don’t forget to pack your favourite book by one of Russia’s great writers. There is absolutely no better place to enjoy Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Bulgakov than when you’re in Russia - immersed in their culture and history!

Russia’s fighters are waging bloody battles in Ukraine’s east to add to its captured territory.

Moscow supports this war effort with soldiers from outside the regular army, including some from a training camp in Chechnya.

Some join for the money, others to escape everyday drudgery, and some fight out of patriotism. But there are tearful goodbyes.

Soldiers trained in Chechnya range from battle tested mercenaries to raw recruits without combat experience.

Mayhem awaits them, as evident in the devastation of the city of Bakhmut.

Inside the Chechen Units Helping to Fight Russia’s War

Nanna Heitmann spent time observing Russian troops training in Chechnya, then later traveled to Bakhmut, Ukraine. Neil MacFarquhar reported from New York.

A hulking military transport plane roared onto the tarmac at the main airfield in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic in southeastern Russia, and a group of 120 volunteer fighters heading for Ukraine clambered aboard.

Dressed in camouflage, the newly minted troops had just completed at least 10 days of training in Gudermes, near Grozny, at the Special Forces University, which accepts men from across Russia for general military instruction.

Some of the trainees lacked any combat experience. Others were veterans returning to Ukraine for their second or third tour — including former mercenaries from the Wagner militia, disbanded in 2023 after a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin.

Some Wagner fighters, chafing at the idea of working for the Russian Defense Ministry, instead transferred whole units to the Chechen-trained forces, known as Akhmat battalions, intended in part to absorb fighters from outside the Russian Army. Wagner veterans were often first recruited from prison, including a lean man with a gold front tooth, identified only by his military call sign, “Jedi,” because of the potential for retribution.

“Go for your Fatherland? What kind of Fatherland? It kept me in prison all my life,” said Jedi, 39, a construction laborer who was convicted of robbery and fraud. In and out of jail since 14, he had six months left on a six-year sentence when he signed up.

“The volunteers go for the money,” he said. “I have yet to meet anyone here for the ideology.” He also wanted a clean slate, he said.

Fat signing bonuses plus payments of about $2,000 per month, at least double the average wage in Russia, have spurred recruitment.

The training near Grozny highlights the evolution of ethnic loyalties that is manifest in this war. Some of those now training there were last in Chechnya as young conscripts for the Russian Army, fighting against Chechens who were part of the separatist movement.

The participation of some Chechens represents another inversion of history: After hundreds of years of enmity with Russia, Chechens were deploying to Ukraine to fight Moscow’s war.

The separatist movement of the 1990s culminated in two brutal wars against Moscow that lasted intermittently for over a decade. The city of Grozny was flattened, and tens of thousands of Chechens died.

Chechnya is ruled by the strongman Ramzan Kadyrov. Portraits of him and his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, can be seen all over Grozny.

Grozny, the capital, was entirely rebuilt after the Russian military flattened it during the Chechen wars.

The history of those wars is not commemorated the way other conflicts are, such as World War II.

A downtown photo exhibit chronicles both the devastation and reconstruction of the city.

Few traces of Grozny’s destruction remain. Today, new mosques and luxury boutiques stand amid the skyscrapers.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the authoritarian leader of Chechnya, has taken an aggressive stance toward Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Chechen forces have claimed an instrumental role in some key battles, including the siege of Mariupol early in the war.

But Mr. Kadyrov has faced accusations that he has refrained from sending his fighters full-bore into the fight, with Chechens dying in fewer numbers than soldiers from other minority areas. Sparing his fighters keeps intact his private militia, the core of the security forces that ensure his rule in Chechnya.

Instead, Mr. Kadyrov has tried to underscore his loyalty to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by pouring resources into this military training center. The regimen consists of live fire exercises with artillery, some mining and demining instruction and first aid.

The various Akhmat battalions were named, like so much in Chechnya, after Mr. Kadyrov’s father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who switched sides to join Moscow in the separatist struggle and was then assassinated in 2004.

Russia has recruited troops for its war effort wherever it could find them, seeking to minimize the need for a draft. In 2022, it lifted an almost blanket ban on Chechens serving in the Russian military, fallout from the separatist movement.

Of the group being dispatched to Ukraine last fall from the tarmac in Grozny, many were in their 30s and 40s, and fewer than 10 were Chechens. Despite Jedi’s claims, money is not the sole motivation.

Some fled troubled domestic lives. Others wanted to escape daily drudgery. Some, of course, profess to be fighting out of patriotism. Many of the men agreed to talk on the condition that they be identified by only their first names or military call signs for fear of retribution.

Anatoly, 24, was among 10 men who volunteered together from a small farming village high in the mountains in the picturesque, south-central Altai region. “My father forced me to shovel snow, to work, to clear out the dung from the cows,” he said. “I ran away from this work to do something else. Every year is the same.” He admitted that the money was an incentive, too.

Another rural worker, a 45-year-old shepherd who uses the call sign “Masyanya,” traveled about 4,500 kilometers from the Republic of Khakassia for the training. “I’m going to defend my motherland, so the war doesn’t come here,” he said.

The contract with the Akhmat battalion lasts only four months, a big incentive when compared with the open-ended deployments for regular soldiers.

Last fall, Mr. Kadyrov formed a new unit, the Sheikh Mansour battalion, named after an 18th-century imam who fought against the Russian Empire. The soldiers are all Chechens or from the small, neighboring republics in the mountainous Caucasus region, and are mostly in their 20s. Chechens fighting for Ukraine against Russia named their battalion after Sheikh Mansour first, and now Mr. Kadyrov is trying to reclaim the name.

Turpal, 20, was working as a security guard for a large supermarket chain in Moscow when he got permission from his father to sign up for the new unit, saying that he wanted to fight against “those devils who are in Ukraine who want to bring their perverted ideas here.”

As he left to go back to the training center after a weekend visiting his parents, he hugged his mother and shook hands with his father. “Russia has been fighting for all its existence,” said Mayrali, Turpal’s father. “You can’t beat it. It is better for Chechnya to be with Russia than to be against Russia.”

Wagner veterans serve in the Sheikh Mansour battalion, too. A 35-year-old fighter who uses the call sign “Dikiy,” or “Wild,” said that he had served 18 months of a nearly 10-year sentence for murder when he signed up. He fought in Ukraine for 11 months, was wounded three times and still gets fierce headaches.

Back in Chechnya, he found the idea of working for $200 per month demoralizing, so he returned to the war. “I don’t know how to do anything else,” he said.

The Akhmat troops are better equipped than the regular army; unlike some regular Russian soldiers, they do not have to buy their own basic equipment.

Jedi said that when he first deployed with Wagner in Ukraine, some young men in the Russian Army came running up begging for supplies, for fuel and for bread. “In Akhmat, I don’t even wash my socks. I wear them, throw them away, wear them,” he said. “The same applies to underwear and bed linen. We have everything.”

Moscow subsidizes an estimated 80 percent of Chechnya’s budget, though it is unclear how much goes to military training.

At the airfield, before the battalion departed, a senior officer lined up the new soldiers to wish them good luck. “Are the fighters ready?” he shouted. “Yes sir,” they barked in unison, followed by the Muslim expression “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great!” plus the Chechen war cry, “Akhmat Sila!” or “Akhmat rules!”

Once they arrived in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, some of the men were assigned to maintain Russian control over Bakhmut, now an abandoned husk of a city after months of fierce fighting.

The streets are deserted, especially during the day, when Ukrainian drones roam overhead, hunting for targets. On foggy days, fighters can sometimes be glimpsed walking through the rubble.

Traffic rumbles to life at night, when the wounded from battles scattered around the Bakhmut region are evacuated. The roads are littered with burned cars and ambulances.

While the war grinds relentlessly above ground, the roar of artillery and exploding shells does not penetrate far beneath the surface, where the Akhmat forces have taken over a field hospital first set up by Wagner.

The Bakhmut region was once famous for its sparkling wine, and the hospital operates in the maze of underground tunnels where tens of thousands of bottles remain stored along the walls. (The prohibition on drinking it by both Wagner and Akhmat has been largely respected.) Once a tourist attraction, the old décor is still intact; dusty plaster statues of ancient gods loom over the wounded.

The caves are wide enough to accommodate at least two vans abreast, and several times a day, vehicles ferrying the wounded and the dead navigate the darkened, fog-shrouded labyrinth. Soldiers leap from the vehicles and quickly carry their often groaning comrades on stretchers to the makeshift stabilization point.

In Bakhmut, wounded Russian soldiers are treated at an underground hospital.

Though Russian forces captured the city last year, fighting in the vicinity remains fierce.

Medical personnel operate in rooms set up in a warren of tunnels that once served as a wine cellar.

The wounded are ferried on stretchers day and night as explosions boom in the distance.

One of the surgeons, Bulya, 34, has worked for Wagner, mostly in Africa, since 2017. On trips to Moscow, he said, people there reacted to seeing him in his fatigues like “dirt under your fingernails,” but in Chechnya, he found more respect.
