Shaniwar Wada

When you are in Pune, it’s hard to miss the  Shaniwar Wada . It is one of the most notable places to visit in Pune. You will come across its mighty stone walls and bastions when you are at the centre of the city. Shaniwar Wada is the old fortification, from the most glorious time of the Peshwas ( पेशवेकालीन ). Moreover, It has survived a massive unexplained fire and Panshet floods of 1961. Shaniwar Wada is a good place in Pune to indulge in the history and culture of the Marathas. And this is a place where you should start your Pune trip. Moreover, there is also something more exciting about Shaniwar Wada. Aga Khan Palace

Aga Khan Palace is a glorious mansion built on the banks of Mula river by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892. The total area is of 13 acres, which has a beautiful garden and the palace. The place has an interesting history as Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, and Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu were imprisoned here during the freedom moment. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died here. Today their memorials stand here along with a memorial for Mahatma Gandhi. The halls inside the palace tell the story of Mahatma Gandhi and the time of freedom struggle. Moreover, some of the old items used by Gandhiji are kept as an exhibit. This is maintained by the Gandhi National Memorial Society. The palace gardens are magnificent. Moreover, Aga Khan Palace is a good place for a photoshoot in Pune.

Pataleshwar Cave

Pataleshwar Cave is a cave from the 8th century ie. the  Rashtrakuta  period. It is said to be more than 1300 years old. The cave is a tribute to Hindu God Shiva. It is made of impressive rock-cut pillars. The entire temple is cut out from basalt rock. Inside are three sanctums with Hindu gods – Shivalinga in the centre, Lord Pataleshwar – the Lord of Underworld, Goddess Lakshmi, and Ganpati. Moreover, there is a sculpture depicting – Ram, Lakshman and Sita. In its courtyard is a huge circular Nandi mandapa. The cave has some unfinished carvings too. Despite been centrally located in Pune city this cave takes you away from the hustle-bustle of the city, into a calm atmosphere. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Pune.

Dagdusheth Halwai Temple

There are numerous temples in Pune city, and the most revered Hindu God here is Ganesha. And this temple dedicated to Ganesha is the heartthrob of all the Punekars. The temple is centrally located, and the decorations during the festive seasons are gorgeous. People from all over Maharashtra come to seek the blessings here. This temple is one of the prominent places to visit in Pune.

Moreover, the unique thing about Dagdusheth Halwai Temple is that the Ganesha idol is visible from the main road too. This means vehicles may stop for a second while praying and then go ahead (because that is what I do mostly!). BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir: Akshar Dham of Pune

This temple located on the Bangalore-Mumbai Highway near Ambegaon is the most beautiful temple in Pune city. The area is very well maintained. Moreover, the temple has a very unique architecture and carvings. Inside the temple is even more beautiful, but photography is not allowed. It is surrounded by well-maintained lawns. Once inside the temple, you will feel extremely calm and at peace. Moreover, this place will remind you of Akshardham of Delhi. The best time to visit BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Pune is the evening, at the time of sunset. You will get to experience the sunset and see the beautiful night lighting of the temple.

Sinhagad  is an old hill fort near Pune city. Besides being a haven for the foodies, it is also rich with history and tales of Maratha bravery. You can plan a trek at this place, or you take your vehicle to the top. The views in the surrounding valleys are mesmerizing. You can also plan camping atop the fort or stay in one of the homestays on the top, for the best experience.

And finally, Kalyan Darwaza, Pune Darwaza, Tanaji Kada, Kalavanteen Buruj, Zujar Buruj, Daru Kothar, Khandkada Machi, Kadelot Point, Devtake, Kondhaneshwar Temple, Chatrapati Rajaram Memorial are some of the places that you must visit in Sinhagad Fort in Pune.

Pune city in India is proudly called विद्येचे माहेरघर or Oxford of the East. So, Pune University is obviously an important monument in the city. It is now renamed as Savitribai Phule Pune University, after the revolutionary woman Savitribai Phule, who spoke up for women’s right to education.

The entire campus is spread across 411 acres. The main building is an old monument and there is an impressive garden in the front. Moreover, the campus is full of trees which are years old and provide a peaceful atmosphere. This is a place where Punekars go for walking, jogging, and cycling while having a breath fresh air in the morning. And the place has two canteens where you can have breakfast – Aadarsh and Aniket.

There is a secret tunnel at Pune University that is almost 155 years old and 300 feet long. Recently, this has been refurbished. And you can now walk through this secret tunnel in Pune University. You need to have prior permission from the officials in the main building. And you can also take it after arriving at Pune University.

Pune Zero Stone

Until recently Zero stone was just another lost monument in Pune. Located near the main post office of Pune, this stone was established by the British and, all the distances were measured from this stone. Now, with the efforts of some of the local historians and architects, the entire area is now restored and redeveloped. It is an important old monument and a good place for taking pictures. Moreover, several sculptures are placed here, which tell us the history.

It is a beautiful zoo spread across 130 acres and has 362 animals in total. You can watch the numerous snakes, some turtles, crocodiles and alligators in one part of the zoo. And in another part, you can watch tigers, leopards, bears, elephants, deer, and other animals. Moreover, the zoo is kid-friendly and accessible by wheelchairs and strollers.

Places to visit in Pune: Gardens in Pune

When it comes to gardens, Pune city hosts numerous beautiful green spaces. And each garden has its own speciality. If you want to visit every major garden in Pune, then one day may not be enough. You can go from Saras Baug, Pune and Sambaji Garden in the main city to  Friendship garden Pune  also called as Pu La Deshpande garden on Sinhagad Road, or Osho Garden, in Koregaon Park, Pune or Empress Garden in Ghorpadi, Pune. There are also numerous lakes in Pune. Most of them have been turned into gardens and have a walking or jogging area, where you may take a stroll or a run. As the NDA cadets are trained here. So they have an extensive arrangement of seamanship training equipment, sailing boats of all sorts, speed boats, water skis, whalers, dinghies, windsurfers, cutters, etc. The place gets its name due to the high number of peacocks in the area. In addition to peacocks, monkeys and civets are also found in the area. The place hosts many competitions like the annual national Inland championship, open lake swimming competition, etc. The lake area is 501 sq km and it is measured to be from 40 to 120 feet deep. It is the best place for nature photography, and to experience the natural beauty. It would be best to visit here in the morning.

Pune: See & Do

The classic itinerary:

Pune's classic itinerary will take you through the city's right history and culture. Take a tour of Shaniwar Wada, the 18th century palace that was the seat of the Peshwa empire. Pataleshwar Caves, a maze of underground, rock-cut caves in the heart of the city are worth a visit. Some refer to Saras Baug as the Central Park of Pune, and though the comparison is odious, the garden is certainly worth a visit. The Aga Khan Palace, built at the turn of the 19th century, is where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for nearly two years. Keeping him company were his wife Kasturba and secretary Mahadev Desai, who both passed away in captivity. Today, the palace is a well-preserved memorial to the freedom struggle.

1 . Trek to one of the forts: Maharashtra's Western Ghats have a high density of forts, and Pune is the perfect base to explore them from. Sinhagad, Lohagad, Purandar, Torana are all within an hour from the city. Most treks don't require prior experience, but if you're a complete newbie, join one of the many trekking groups that set out over the weekend. For some more adventure, sign up for an overnight trek.

2 . Pune Heritage Walk: Though Pune is steeped in history, it doesn't have a dedicated zone or area where you can take it all in. Palaces, forts and other places of interest have been beseeched by the modern and the mundane. What helps is a guided heritage walk. Every weekend, Janwani conducts a tour, which includes Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal, Nana Wada and other places of interest.

3 . Go paragliding: Approximately 45km from Pune is Kamshet, India's premier paragliding destination. Between November to May, a small bunch of certified paragliding companies conduct flights at various times of the day. Sign up for a weekend course or a more intensive three-day flying lesson. The experience includes camping in the Sahyadris, and plenty of banter, so park away a weekend for this.

4 . Walk through Camp: In the days of the Raj, Pune Cantonment was a prominent hub for the British forces in the region. Camp was where the officers and their families came to unwind. Despite its gentrification over the years, Camp has held on to some vintage institutions. Kayani Bakery continues to serve delectable cakes, Marz-o-Rin still serves its unbeatable chicken sandwich and Victory Theatre continues to show movies minus all the multiplex fuss. MG Road in Camp is a busy shopping area, so be ready to lug some bags around.

5 . Pune Zoo: The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park at the southern end of the city can easily keep you hooked for half a day. On display are tigers, leopards, deer, bears, elephants and of course, a host of reptiles. Gharials and alligators attract a lot of attention, but it is the variety of snakes that evoke the strongest reactions. There are over 16 . species of snakes, including the pythons, vipers and the formidable King Cobra. Certainly not for the squeamish.

6 . Shop for trendy curios: A new breed of graphic artists, product designers and entrepreneurs have set up a range of stores that sell quirky, handcrafted products. Either/Or near Bund Garden Road is a one-stop shop for clothes, handicrafts, jewellery and home decor by local and national designers. Aga Khan Palace

This is the first attraction that history lovers should tick off their Pune tourism itinerary. Located close to the Bund Garden, the majestic palace is an iconic site in Pune. It was built in 1892 as a shelter for the victims of the Maharashtra famine, and today it serves as the headquarters of Gandhi National Memorial society.

The palace is massive and if you are interested in a tour, it will take you approximately two to three hours to explore the area. Manicured gardens surround the palace and the interiors are absolutely stunning with Italian arches in five halls. Since the hall is dedicated to the Gandhi family, it is filled with photographs, paintings and other personal items from their time in the place.

Aga Khan Palace is an important part of Pune tourism since it is one of the few places that finds a place on all Pune tourism itineraries. It’s best to take the services of a tour guide while exploring this historical site since that will give you insight into the architecture, history and importance of Aga Khan Palace. The historical site is open all on days besides public holidays.

Shaniwar Wada

Another historical site that is on the list of places to visit in Pune is Shaniwar wada. The erstwhile seat of the Peshwa governance, it is a grand structure that is considered to be one of the finest architectural wonders in the city. Built by Peshwa Bajirao I, the palace used to cover most parts of Pune in its glory years. Even today, it retains its grandeur and is a sight to behold. As you enter the historical site, you will be greeted by a grand statue of Bajirao I. There are five main getaways in the complex and a massive garden complex. 

If you are an architecture buff, there is so much to learn and see when you are visiting Shaniwar wada. The gates and walls have undergone renovation but the basic structure remains the same. An unexplained fire had destroyed various parts of the palace decades ago yet timely renovation ensured that the palace doesn’t lose its charm. A few sites that you can particularly take note of are Ganpati Rang Mahal, the Dilli gate, the Mastani gate, a 16-petal lotus-shaped fountain and the walls of that are adorned by paintings depicting the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

You must take out time for the beautiful Ganpati Rang Mahal. The hall was used for all functions and ceremonies during the Peshwa rule. If you want to explore the historical site and do justice to its significance, we recommend keeping aside atleast three to four hours in your Pune tourism itinerary. 

You can also combine a tour of Shaniwar wada with a visit to some of the oldest markets in Pune. The markets are outside the palace and are a delight for shopping enthusiasts exploring Pune tourism. 

Osho Ashram

We have all heard of the renowned spiritual guru Osho and his impact on seekers across the world. In the early part of the 70s, Osho started practising and teaching the art of meditation. In 1974, he opened his first ashram in the quiet city of Pune and over the years it became home to spiritual seekers from India and abroad. 

One could say that the Osho Ashram generously contributed to the growth of Pune tourism. Also known as Osho Meditation Resort, it is designed to offer one the comforts of modern life while delving into the mysteries of the spiritual realm. While the ashram offers residential programs, you can also opt for a day visit to learn more about the various kinds of programs. The ashram is located in Koregaon Park, which is one of the most popular areas in Pune. To reach the ashram, you have to walk a kilometre from the main road. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is set amidst lush greenery and offers a peaceful escape from the mundane everyday routine.

Pune Okayama Friendship Garden

In fact, a major part of Pune tourism is the gardens and parks that the city is home to. The Okayama Friendship Garden is an integral part of Pune tourism. It is the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan and is popularly referred to as the Pu. La. Deshpande Udyan.

Named after a popular writer and humorist, Pu La Deshpande, the garden is symbolic of the Indo-Japanese relationship. The layout of the garden is inspired by the 300-year old Okayama Korakuen Garden in Japan.

The garden is extremely popular amidst locals and if you are visiting on a weekend, you will find it extremely busy. The layout of the garden aims to strike a balance between manmade structures and natural beauty. While there are man-made ponds and waterfalls, the striking greenery makes up for the artificial structures. If you have an eye for art and aesthetics, you will notice that the garden is a reflection of the Japanese Yin and Yang ethos. There are various parts of the garden that emphasise the importance of opposites. 

The design and structure of the garden are inspired by the Shinto, Buddhist and Taoist ways of creation. The ambience of the garden is extremely calm and you’ll see many people meditating or practising yoga, especially in the mornings. Balance, emptiness and nature are three principles that the garden is based upon and you will notice that the overall design is inspired by Japanese gardens in the 1700s. You can see these elements in the stone lanterns, Japanese bridges, Koi fish and stunning water basins dotting this beautiful garden. We recommend heading here either early morning or late in the afternoon so you can enjoy atleast a couple of hours here.

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple devoted to Lord Ganapati is one of the most popular temples in Pune. The temple sees hundreds of visitors everyday and is extremely busy during the festive season. The best time to visit the temple is in the morning and in the evening when the arti is taking place. 

The stunning idol of Lord Ganesha in the temple calls for admiration. It is approximately 2.2 meters high and is adorned with 40 kilos of gold.

During the ganpati festival, the temple is bustling with seekers and celebrations take place through the festive week. If you plan to visit the temple during ganpati puja , it’s best to do so in the morning.
