Thank you so much for all the effort you put into planning and arranging our itinerary – everything went smoothly and everyone we dealt with in Africa was delightful, thanks to you. It was a magical trip and far exceeded all my expectations – I could have stayed at Ol Seki forever.

Masai Mara, Kenya & Zanzibar, October 2019

We had a fantastic time – by breaking the holiday into plenty of different stages, it felt more like a month’s holiday, rather than just 2 weeks. Lewa Safari Camp was very luxurious and comfortable.

AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kenya is located in East Africa and encompasses classic savannah, mountain highlands, colourful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and pristine coral reefs. The Masai Mara is world renowned for the “ Great Mammal Migration ” and sightings of the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). The soda lake known as Lake Nakuru lights up with pink flamingos, whilst the Amboseli National Park offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Kenya is home to Africas second highest mountain, whilst the Tsavo and Samburu game reserves offer rewarding safari experiences. Kenya boasts unforgettable bush and beach vacations with destinations such as Diani Beach providing the perfect setting for some well-deserved relaxation.

Kenya is a year-round destination for both safari and beach holidays.

The main tourist seasons tie in with the rainfall patterns: the biggest influxes of visitors are in December – January and July – August .

Dry-season travel has a number of advantages, not least of which is the greater visibility of wildlife as animals are concentrated along the diminishing watercourses. July to September is probably the best period, overall, for game-viewing, with early September almost certain to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

October, November, and March are the months with the clearest seas for snorkeling and diving. In the long rains, the mountain parks are occasionally closed, as the muddy tracks are undrivable. But the rainy seasons shouldn’t deter travel unduly: the rains usually come only in short afternoon or evening cloudbursts, and the landscape is strikingly green and fresh even if the skies may be cloudy. There are bonuses, too: fewer other tourists, reduced prices and often perfect light for photography.

Renowned for its classic savanna safaris, Kenya is a beautiful country with deserts, alpine snows, forests, open plains, colorful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and coral reefs. The wildlife safaris have always been the top attraction in Kenya. This huge wilderness is home to the most impressive wildlife spectacle on earth; The great migration. The great migration is a pilgrimage of millions of wildebeest and zebra in search of new pastures. The herds are followed by vast numbers of predators, including lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Other activities to be experienced in Kenya include trekking Mount Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara and snorkeling in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.

Masai Mara National Park

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the top tourist attractions in Kenya and the country’s most popular game park. Each year the Masai Mara National Reserve is visited by thousands of tourists who come here to watch the exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest. The “Great Migration” takes place every year from July to October when millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park located close to the Tanzania border at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. ‘Must do’ attractions in the Amboseli National Park include meeting the Maasai people and witnessing the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is just a short drive from the center of Nairobi with only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the metropolis. It is the only national park in the world to be found within the precincts of a capital city. Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Despite its proximity to the city and the relatively small size of the park, Nairobi National Park boasts a large and varied wildlife population including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.Malindi provides a very nice introduction to the coastal tourist attractions in Kenya with its extensive coral reefs and beautiful beaches. There are surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports. The Malindi Marine National Park and nearby Watamu Marine National Park have protected areas with beautiful beaches, clear water, turtles and very colorful fish. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve harbors elephants and more than 200 species of birds.

Mombasa is Kenya's main tourist destination. It is on the eastern coastline of Kenya, bordering the Indian Ocean which has made it a popular destination for its beaches. Mombasa is a place where both history and progress are greatly valued, where a busy harbor existence is lived at its own unique, tropical pace. Mombasa offers a diverse marine life, world-class hotels, and friendly atmosphere. There is a tropical climate all year and it is a great destination filled with activities for all ages.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as the ‘Place of Light’. Its ragged series of peaks are crowned with snow, and its slopes are covered with forest. The 5199 meter (17,057 ft) high summit is a difficult technical climb, several lowers peaks, however, are an easy destination for any fit trekker. The majority of animals live lower down on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here there is more vegetation and the climate is less extreme. Various species of monkeys, several antelopes, tree hyrax, porcupines and some larger animals such as elephant and buffalo all live in the forest.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a very peaceful national park in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It attracts wildlife because of the Uaso Nyiro River that runs through it and the mixture of forest and grassland vegetation. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile. Samburu also offers a sublime birding experience.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a small park named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It is unique among Kenya’s wildlife parks, as you are allowed to walk or cycle without a guide. There’s dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, gorges and basalt columns. The national park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, though many are few in number. Examples of little-seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. As the oldest living town in Kenya, Lamu Town has retained all the charm and character built up over centuries. There are no roads on Lamu Island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya and in the world. Due to its size, the park was divided into Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The Tsavo West has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape while Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling. Tsavo National Park is the ideal destination in Kenya for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The park is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust-red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a very shallow lake in central Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts vast quantities of flamingos, sometimes more than one million at once. Often called the greatest bird spectacle on earth, the flamingos are one of Kenya’s top attractions. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, and game drives.

safari and beach holidays kenya

With so many inland wilderness areas and coastal destinations from which to craft your ideal Kenya dream holiday, you may be torn between the high-pace action of a bush safari and the romantic, exciting aquatic setting of the Indian Ocean beaches. We want to share all that Kenya offers for you and your family. We will pick you up from the airport upon your arrival. Airport pickup and drop-off are covered in the tour package.

MID-LUXURY OPTION

You'll be picked up from the airport or your city hotel and drive to Lake Naivasha with a stop at Hell's Gate. The park is mainly comprised of the savannah ecosystem and harbours a wide variety of wildlife. There are over 100 species of birds in the park, including vultures, verreaux's eagles, augur buzzards and swifts. African buffalos, zebras, elands, hartebeests, Thomson's gazelle, and baboons are also common. The park is also home to klipspringer antelope.

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake that is a popular tourist spot in Kenya. You will spend the rest of the day at leisure. You may also choose to book a one-hour lake boat safari at an extra cost during which you get to see some of the lake's wildlife such as hippos as well as to enjoy the picturesque views of the lake and surrounding highland landscapes.

Overnight stay in Naivasha.

You'll have an early morning pick up then drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Across the equator, southwards of Bogoria, lies the Rift Valley's most famous Lake Nakuru. Known all over the world for its flamingos, it is alkaline and recognized as being one of the Natural Wonders of the World. Lake Nakuru is now a rhino sanctuary, harbouring a population of over 40 black and over 60 white rhinos, but the flamingoes, of course, have always been the main attraction. At times, there may be almost 2 million flamingoes in the residence, forming a stunningly beautiful deep pink band around the edge of the lakeshore. You'll arrive in time for lunch then have an afternoon game drive. You will have dinner and an overnight stay at a camp in Nakuru.

After breakfast, you'll leave for Masai Mara where you'll have a full-day game drive with packed lunch provided. The reserve is well known for its black-manned lions, as well as its abundant resident wildlife. It is one of the few places where it is possible to see the Big Five during a morning game drive. Many of the cheetahs are so tame they seek shelter from the hot sun under one's vehicle and several even climb onto the roof to get a better view of prospective prey. For the bird enthusiast, almost 500 species have been recorded: among these 16 species of eagles, many hawks and falcons, 6 species of vultures, 8 species of storks, 4 of bustards (including the kori bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird), and 9 species of sunbirds.

You will have dinner and an overnight stay at a camp or lodge at Masai mara.

You'll have a fun vacation with amazing landscapes. Your lunch will be en route. In the afternoon, you'll be transferred to Nairobi train station where you will take your train to Mombasa. You will then be transferred to your beach hotel for your overnight stay.

You will take a deep breath and pamper yourself with a relaxing stay at the beach. You will enjoy a quiet place, of crystalline turquoise water, white sand and a huge seashore with only the noise of the sea and the gulls in the background. This place has become popular for its exotic beaches, diverse marine life, world-class hotels and friendly people. Nightlife is always exciting, and the city offers many dance clubs and casinos that cater to a variety of entertainment tastes.

Overnight stay at your diani hotel or resort.

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Matthys van Aswegen

Safari Travel Planner

Kenya is ideally suited to a beach and bush holiday. Indeed, you could say that it is tailor-made for this combination of activities. Kenya Safari tour options are covered in detail elsewhere on this website.

Diani Beach,Kenya

Still, we would broadly recommend 7-10 days on safari, ideally split between two or three major reserves, broken up with overnight stays at Lake Nakuru and/or one of the Tree Hotels of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. This could be followed with 4-7 days at a beach resort such as Diani, Malindi, or Watamu.

Best time to visit kenya for a safari.

For an unparalleled wildlife safari experience combined with the perfect beach getaway, the best time to visit Kenya for safari is generally from early July to late September. This timeframe aligns with Kenya’s dry season, which also extends across East Africa. Notably, it coincides with the Great Migration, a breathtaking spectacle where vast herds of wildebeest and zebras traverse the Mara River on their journey from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Additional favorable months for a Kenya safari include June and the stretch between December and February. Even October and November, characterized by Kenya’s short rains, provide a suitable window for safari enthusiasts.

Conversely, April and May mark Kenya’s long rainy season, resulting in potentially impassable roads. Despite this, in parks and well-equipped regions, this period presents a unique opportunity for budget-friendly safaris. The lush greenery and awe-inspiring topography during the long rainy season contribute to a distinct and enchanting safari experience. Planning a visit during this time allows for a more economical safari adventure while reveling in the vibrant landscapes that Kenya has to offer.

Where to visit on a Kenya Safari

Our Kenya safari tours will take you to the most famous parks in Kenya and Africa at large including the Masai Mara the where the largest animal migration; the Wildebeests Migration also known as ‘ The Great Migration ’ happens every year seeing thousands upon thousands of visitors who stream the area to witness the wildlife pilgrimage.

Apart from the Masai Mara we also arrange safari tours to the Amboseli National Park famous for the Postcard views of large elephants with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, but also the Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Park of the legendary man-eating lions. Other places of interest where our Kenya safaris will take you include Lake Nakuru National Park and other rift valley lake including Lake Baringo , Lake Elmenteita and the Lake Bogoria where you will be amazed by the colorful flocks of flamingoes among other aquatic and non-aquatic birds.

At Safari Desire we offer mainly private tailor made safari tours in Kenya and can therefore plan tours to other less travelled national parks and private game reserves like; the Olpejeta Conservancy , Meru National Park , Lewa Conservancy and other game reserves like Taita Hills , Ngutuni Wildlife Conservancy as well as Lumo Conservancy closer to Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and the Kenya Coast in general.

With offices in both Nairobi and Mombasa, we offer Kenya safaris from Mombasa, as well as Nairobi Safari tours, with some tours starting at Nairobi and ending at Mombasa or Diani Beach; like our affordable 14 Days Kenya safari and Beach holiday .

Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Nairobi.

You'll be transferred from the Nairobi Airport to Giraffe Manor, a boutique hotel set on private land that is home to a number of endangered Rothschild giraffes.

Nairobi

Today, you can spend your time at Giraffe Manor at your leisure. You can relax in the gardens and just enjoy being with these very special creatures.

Karen Blixen's house

You will be taken to Wilson Airport this morning for your flight north to Samburu. A driver-guide will meet you on arrival and take you on a morning safari back to your lodge. Settle in and enjoy the superb views before heading off for your first taste of safari this afternoon.

Elephant family, Samburu game reserve

Enjoy a full day on safari from Saruni Samburu today. There are two activities available each day, and you can choose whether to head off on a traditional safari, night drive or walking safari.

Reticulated giraffe, Samburu National Reserve

Morning or afternoon safaris are a great way to explore further afield and see some of the bigger wildlife, whereas the walks are a good chance to learn more about the smaller creatures in the ecosystem, enjoying the birdlife and tracking animals by their footprints.

Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, you will have time for a short morning safari on your way back to the airstrip for your flight south to the Masai Mara. After lunch, once you've settled in, you can head out on an afternoon safari activity and explore this fantastic conservancy.

Cheetah brothers relaxing in the shade

On safari in the Mara. You can enjoy morning and afternoon safari drives from your camp as well as short walking safaris, night drives and sundowners out in the open. As the camp is situated in a private conservancy within the Mara, the number of camps and vehicles here is strictly limited, giving you by far the best safari experience away from the busier areas of the park.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River

The Masai Mara is big cat country, so keep your eyes peeled for lion, cheetah and, of course, the very elusive leopard.

Maasai elder, Masai Mara

Another day exploring more of the Mara from Asilia Naboisho Camp. The guides here are superb and will be keen to ensure you see as much as possible during your time. If there is certain wildlife in particular that you're keen to see, do let your guide know so they can try to take you to the right areas.

Hyenas, Masai Mara

Today you will depart from the Mara by light aircraft for the coast. On arrival, you will be met and transferred a short distance to your beach hotel, where you can relax and unwind after your safari.

Diani Beach

Today you can simply relax on the beach after your safari and do as much or as little as you like.

Dhow and kitesurfer, Diani Beach

Today you might like to head into Diani and spend some time exploring the lovely little shops and numerous great restaurants in the area.

Diani Beach, Kenya

During your stay, you may want to arrange to go snorkelling. You can take a trip in a traditional wooden dhow to the coral reef just off the coast where you can enjoy exploring the beautiful underwater life.

Dhow off Diani Beach

Your final day at leisure on the coast. You may wish to indulge in a relaxing spa treatment or simply chill out on the beach.

The best safari holidays in Kenya

By Geordie Greig

Masai Mara National Reserve Kenya

The good news is that the lion you hear grunting outside your tent on the plains of Kenya ’s Maasai Mara means there are plenty of animals to see. Even better, as long as you stay inside your tent at night you are completely safe.

Welcome to the wonders and worries of life on safari in this animal idyll in East Africa. Where to go? What to wear? Will I be safe? All key questions for a safari in Kenya, one of the most beautiful and thrilling places to see animals in the wild.

Three giraffes under acacia tree in the african savannah

Nothing beats a heart-stopping moment of seeing a lioness feed her six cubs or a leopard snooze in the top branches of an acacia tree. You get shockingly close to elephants and their young crossing a river and witness thousands of wildebeest stampede a river in the Great Migration. The Maasai Mara, Kenya’s best-known savannah, is safari heaven: a vast tribal area with conservation areas and public parks that mean wonderful wildlife is guaranteed. But a safari in Kenya can also be somewhat intimidating for the first time traveller.

Essential is a good camp guide who can be like having your own private David Attenborough, recognising fork-tailed drongos and showing you why a hippo has four toe marks in the sand while a rhino has three. They zip you in jeeps from your camp across plains, over rivers and under dramatic ridges with proper anthropological knowledge and charm.

Also key to any trip is advance planning. First, get jabbed a month in advance – Yellow Fever is mandatory, a number of other vaccines are advised by the NHS , and malaria pills are essential (start a day in advance and for 10 days after). Tourist visas can be obtained online in advance.

Below, we cover everything the would-be safari explorer needs to know when planning a trip to Kenya. Take these key tips so as to avoid having to make an SOS call to your travel agent.

What do I need for a safari in Kenya?

Layers are key – you can always take items off. Hot as Africa can be, early morning game drives can be cold. Avoid bright colours and stick to basic T-shirts or shirts (preferably khaki or grey) and light trousers. Tough trainers are fine. Bring a jersey and warm(ish) jacket that zips or buttons up. Tan leather bomber jackets – easily found second-hand on eBay – are perfect.

You are likely to be flying to your camp in a small plane with less than 15kg of soft luggage. So be ruthless – three shirts are plenty as most camps do overnight laundry, for example. The key essentials are as follows: sunglasses , sun protection, and a hat. Less is more.

Kenya conveniently uses UK three-pin plugs for charging phones and laptops. A torch, Kindle, camera and binoculars are the only hardware needed. Don’t forget to bring dollars in small notes to tip – there are no ATMs in the wild.

Which safari is best in Kenya?

The area around Nairobi has attractive conservation areas, the most popular being Nairobi National Park, Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha as well as the Aberdare Mountains. The biggest name is the Maasai Mara National Reserve, home to some of Africa's best year-round game viewing as well as the annual Wildebeest Migration.

The further north you travel, the drier and hillier the landscape becomes. But there are still superb safari options here, including Samburu National Park, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Laikipia. The more arid conditions suit species like gerenuk, the Somali ostrich and Grevy's zebra. Lewa is also the best place to see rhinos. On a clear day, Mounts Kenya and Meru are visible. This is the best place to see snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Kili actually lies in Tanzania, but Kenya's Amboseli National Park is so close to the border that it has incredible vantage points.

This part of Kenya is wetter and the terrain more varied: Amboseli, for example, is a beautiful mix of open savannah, wetlands, woodlands and hills, ideal for a wide variety of species, from bat-eared foxes to elephants. Nearby are the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo East and West National Parks.

Way down on the south-eastern coast is some of Kenya's best beaches . Hit Diani and nearby Galu for top beach lodges and water sports like kitesurfing. Head to Funzi Island for snorkelling and diving. I was asked for a bit of Indiana Jones with a side of luxury for my honeymoon . Kenya is exactly that.

Where to stay on safari in Kenya

The many different camps vary from maharajah-grand to plain and unadorned. These are two of our favourites.

Great Plains Mara Expedition Camp

The sound outside our tent was a zebra’s yappy bark. Amid a grove of 7,000 trees, this could pass as the inspiration for Out of Africa. Just a 50-minute hop in a small plane from Nairobi, comfort and wilderness magically combine here – a camp that is truly in the wild, with just six tents in the Maasai Mara. They are a throwback to Edwardian glamour. Campaign desks with leather-covered chairs, cotton sheets, an en-suite bathroom with copper fans and brass showers, and WiFi, all under canvas – it’s all more country house than camping discomfort. Hot water 24-hours a day is solar powered. Vegetables are grown on-site and prepared by an exceptional chef who whips up fruit roulade, fennel and garlic soup and mint-scented lamb kofta. At this camp, the Big Five (except rhinos) are likely to be seen on game drives in open-sided Land Cruisers with a free-loan long-lens digital camera. Great game-viewing takes place with guides by balloon, foot or jeep. This is a camp that majors on authenticity and charm.

Mara Plains Camp

Not far from our tent, a leopard sat on the fork of a desert date tree. There is a Moroccan feel to this camp on wooden stilts and roped walkways in the Maasai Mara. It is a tented temple to camping comfort: a copper bath, leather luggage trunks as tables, a king-sized bedroom and a vast room for children. The early morning game drive from Mara Plains Camp includes a hot water bottle to ease the early morning chill. All is as eco as possible with solar power and not an inch of plastic. Your own metal water flask ice is -filled every day. The spa room opens onto acacia dotted plains. The game drive guides know their stuff, down to the gestation period of a warthog. This is nature in tooth and claw on your doorstep. A leopard scuttles away from a Topi antelope it has caught, as 16 hyenas snarl and fight for a bite. A dazzle of 1,000 zebras dots the veld. The camp’s reception area for its six tents is lit by candles and lanterns. Guards with torches escort you to your tent and cheerily warn that the noises heard in the night are likely to be hippos or a lion – so enjoy the sounds, but stay inside.

When is the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Avoid the rainy season in April and May. The high season runs from June to October when the massive wildebeest and zebra herds are on the move in their hundreds of thousands from about August to November.
