Owner of BBQ restaurant still going strong after celebrating 93rd birthday

HARRISONBURG, Va. ( WHSV /Gray News) – The longtime owner of a Virginia restaurant celebrated her milestone birthday last weekend.

Faye Bland turned 93 years old Sunday and is still running the show at the Bar-B-Q Ranch in Harrisonburg after 40 years.

The Bar-B-Q Ranch has been a beloved spot for some of the best pork barbecue in the area since 1947, according to WHSV.

The restaurant was purchased by Bland and her husband in 1984.

Now at the age of 93, Bland said she is still going strong and bringing good food and company to the Friendly City.

“Every day I’m the first one in here and the last one to leave,” Bland said. “I don’t want to stay home by myself, so I just come.”

Customers have seen Bland hard at work over the last four decades in the restaurant. She continues to answer phones each day and do what she can to help her team from the morning until after close at 9 p.m.

“I can’t get around as good as I did,” she said. “I used to wait tables, cook and do all of it, but I can’t do it now because I can’t walk so good. “I’ve got a good staff, I’ve got all of my good workers, and they’re good.”

Bland has plenty of advice for those who want to live a long, healthy life.

“Get up and go, don’t sit down, you’ll die. Don’t sit down and not move,” she said.

Bland said she has always wanted to own a restaurant, and when the Bar-B-Q Ranch was up for sale 40 years ago, she jumped on the opportunity.

“We saw it in the newspaper, and my husband said, ‘You always wanted a restaurant. Why don’t you go out there and run the restaurant?’ I said, ‘OK,’” Bland said.

Despite the passage of time, Bland said her restaurant hasn’t changed much.

She has had numerous loyal customers over the years and continues to see many of them regularly.

“I just get to see different people. People come in, and it’s a lot of company,” she said. “Yep, we’ve got customers that come every day. We used to have a man that came for lunch and dinner.”

Bland said getting to see her staff and customers each day is her favorite part of running the Bar-B-Q Ranch.

“I just get to meet a lot of people and see a lot of people. I just like people,” she said.

The Bar-B-Q Ranch is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on North Valley Pike near Exit 251 of I-81.
