Troubleshooting, how to see websites visited with screen time on iphone & ipad.

How to See Websites Visited with Screen Time on iPhone & iPad

With Screen Time, you can keep an eye on what websites are visited and accessed on an iPhone or iPad. This Screen Time capability is completely separate from searching through Safari browser history to find past viewed websites, as it’s intended to keep track of web usage and what sites have been visited, which can be particularly helpful for iPad or iPhone setup for a child, though there’s obviously many other use cases too.

For some quick background, Screen Time is a feature in modern iOS, iPadOS, and macOS versions that allow users to keep track of their device usage, and it doubles as a set of parental control tools to restrict the content that children and other users are able to access on a device. The ability to view the list of websites visited is one such tool that could come in handy especially if you want to block any unwanted websites that are being accessed from the device.

Let’s take a look at how you can view which websites have been visited by using Screen Time on an iPhone or iPad.

How to View Which Websites Have Been Visited on iPhone or iPad with Screen Time

Before you go ahead with this procedure, keep in mind that you can only access this list if Screen Time is enabled on your device. Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at the necessary steps.

iOS settings icon

That’s how you can see the websites visited on an iOS or iPadOS device with Screen Time. Remember, this only works if Screen Time has been enabled.

It’s worth noting that you can only see the list of websites that were visited using Safari. Therefore, if the person uses third-party browsers like Chrome or Firefox, you won’t be able to keep track of the data. In that case, you can still check that specific browser’s history and then use Screen Time to restrict access to specific websites, or restrict access to a particular app by putting a passcode lock on it or any other restriction you see fit.

When you observe that the user is spending too much time on a specific website, you can set daily limits for that website. Or, if you see that the user is accessing an unwanted site, you can block any website using Screen Time on iPhone or iPad too . Blocking websites using Screen Time should make it inaccessible from any browser and not just Safari.

We highly recommend you to use a Screen Time passcode and keep changing it frequently to make sure the user doesn’t mess around with your Screen Time settings and make unnecessary changes.

Do you use a Mac? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also see the list of websites visited on the Mac using Screen Time in an identical way. Plus, you can also block access to specific websites with Screen Time on macOS if preferred.

Were you able to use Screen Time to see websites viewed from an iPhone or iPad? What other parental control features do you use to restrict the device usage? Let us know your tips, thoughts, and opinions on Apple’s Screen Time in the comments section.

I would add that the back and forward buttons shown in the 4th screen shot, with the “this week” at the top of the screen are highly useful to narrow down which day you want to check. You can check data usage patterns for specific days or weeks, and it’s very helpful to track habits of loved ones who are misusing/hiding/cheating with the device – such as amount of time, what apps are being used, time of day, etc. I would add that someone could be listening to a podcast or music or the radio while at work, driving, or at school, and it might show up as hours on Safari or YouTube or something, so it’s NOT necessarily that this person is browsing for hours a day. This settings feature is extremely useful to track patterns, catch misbehavior, and to set limits for certain content! I don’t check the history or cache anymore, since people just delete that, and cache (advanced website data) saves all kinds of useless crap that is more confusing than helpful.

Hi. My husband is cheating and he’s clearing all days but it still show on his iPad mini 2 that he was on safari but I can view the website. Is there a way to narrow down the time he was on safari ?

This only shows that he’s using Safari but it doesn’t provide the websites like shown in your screenshot

This only shows me that he’s using Safari it doesn’t list the websites like in the picture.

I was unable to view the websites I recently visited via safari by following the instructions in the article. Is this because I always have private browsing turned in? If so, it could be mentioned in the article, no?

Yes Private Browsing is called private because it does not keep cache, history, or other browsing details on the local device. That is the function of that feature.

However, a connected wi-fi router, ISP, DNS service providers, etc, may still have access to that browsing data via DNS lookups, unsecured data transmission, etc.

iPhone screen showing the Safari app icon in the center

You'll definitely want to know how to clear Safari browsing history on iPhone and iPad . Know how to delete browsing history is part of basic user operation on all your devices, and is especially if you share devices with others.

Luckily, deleting browsing history on Safari is easy and can be done in just a few taps, and is the same on iOS and iPadOS, so whether you're using an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad Air , these steps will apply.

Remember, though, that deleting your browsing history only stops your activity being visible on that device. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will still be able to see the webpages you have visited. If you want to stop that, for ultimate privacy, you'll need to use one of the best VPN services .

The following screenshots were taken on an iPhone running iOS 17 . If you aren't running the latest version of your device's OS, we can show you how to update an iPhone or how to update an iPad .

  • In Safari, tap the book icon
  • Go to the history tab (clock)
  • Select how far back to clear

Read on to see full illustrated instructions.

1. In Safari, tap the book icon

How to find your web-browsing history, how to clear your web browsing history.

Apple makes it very easy to clear your browsing history on both the iPhone and iPad and we're here to show you how. Here's how you can make a fresh start in Safari and debloat your web browsing experience.

iPad Air 6 13-inch | $799 $754 at Amazon

With an M2 chip and a 13-inch screen option, the new iPad Air 6 is one of the best iPads available right now. Normally $799, you can pick up the 13-inch model for nearly $50 off at the moment — don't miss out.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated in iOS 18 . If Apple's web browser could automatically clear history after 24 hours it would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

How to clear browsing history on Safari on iPhone or Mac

William Gallagher's Avatar

You can clear your Safari browsing history on both iOS and Mac

safari history time on iphone

As tracking goes, Safari keeping your browsing history is less about privacy-busting security and more about just being useful. It's your history that means Safari remembers where to go to when you choose forward and back within a site, for instance.

It's also how Safari is able to offer you a list of sites that you regularly go to, on account of how handy it is to be able to back to them with a click. History also does keep things you may not expect, though, such as a list of items you've downloaded.

If you don't want that, though, or you're just fed up of Safari going to site addresses you haven't looked at in years, you can wipe the whole browsing history.

On a Mac, you can also wipe, for instance, just the last hour's browsing history. So if you share Safari and it's someone's special birthday coming up, you can avoid them inadvertently finding out you plan to surprise them with dance lessons.

Go to History, Clear History, and then choose how far back you want your browsing cleared

How to clear search history on Safari on Mac

  • In Safari, choose the History menu
  • Select Clear History from the very bottom of the menu
  • In the dialog box that appears, choose from clearing the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history
  • Click on Clear History

Alternatively, within Safari you can press Command-Y and the current page will be replaced by a history list. There's a Clear History... button toward the top right.

Clicking on that gives you exactly the same dialog about choosing how far back you want to clear your browsing history. But this page does also give you one extra option — the ability to delete one specific item.

How to clear one item from Safari search history on Mac

  • In Safari, press Command-Y
  • From the long list, click once on a history item to select it
  • Right-click to bring up a menu, then choose Delete

Alternatively, if you select one, two, or more items in the history list, you can then press the Delete key to remove them all.

You can remove your takeaway habits from Safari, we're not judging you.

That kind of precision removal is only possible on your Mac, not on iOS . However, whether it's precision or wholesale clearing of your history, though, there is a way to replicate it on iOS.

If you have set iCloud to share your Safari history, then just doing this on your Mac also removes the history from your iPhone, and iPad.

Otherwise, you're stuck with going to your iOS device. And then with clearing the entire history.

How to clear search history on iPhone

  • Go to Settings on your iOS device
  • Tap on Safari
  • Scroll down to Clear History and Website Data
  • Tap that, then tap Clear History and Data to confirm

One important thing to note is that you can't selectively remove, say, today's browsing history on the iPhone or iPad . It's all or nothing, with iOS.

Clearing your Safari history is all or nothing on iOS

What you leave behind

Clearing your history like this does remove the list of sites and pages you've visited. It does mean you can't go back to that site you read last Tuesday, not without remembering what it was and going there yourself.

What it doesn't remove, though, is the information that gets used by something like AutoFill. If you have your address, for instance, and you're used to online forms being filled out with it, you've still got that feature.

You've also still got anything you downloaded. It's purely that Safari won't keep the list of downloads.

Your browser’s search history will be mixed in with the pages you’ve visited. This implies that the terms you entered in the search field at the top or bottom of the screen will be visible as well. Depending on your selected search engine, your search phrases will appear beside domains such as “google.com” or “bing.com.”

Continue reading our tutorial below for more information on locating and using history data in your iPhone’s Safari browser.

Further Details about Checking Safari History on iPhone

It is important to note that Safari does not save your history for pages visited while using Private Browsing. Toggling between ordinary and private browsing is as simple as touching the Tabs icon (two overlapping squares) at the bottom of the screen and selecting the Private option.

Safari also does not save browsing history for other iPhone browsers, such as Google Chrome or Firefox. Instead, you’d have to open those browsers to see their history.

Also, deleting the browsing history for Safari will only affect the browsing history for the Safari app. Other browsers’ history menus will remain accessible on your iOS device unless you opt to delete the existing data for those browsers as well.

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data to remove your Safari history. This will also clear your cookies and log you out of any accounts you are presently signed into.

When you remove Safari’s browser history, you won’t be able to view Safari history for any browsing sessions that occurred before the deletion. Safari will only display your Online surfing history when that information has been removed.

If you haven’t erased Safari history previously, your browser history can be quite large. Normally, the device’s full history will be available for 30 days.

How to Lookup Safari History on an iPhone

Searching through your iPhone Safari history is another intriguing thing you can do with it.

When you open Safari, press the book symbol at the bottom of the screen, then select the History tab at the top of the screen, you’ll notice a “Search History” area.

When you tap inside that field and type a search query, you’ll see a list of pages from your history that contain those search terms.

This is especially useful if you recall a single word or term but don’t remember where you saw it or the name of the website where you saw it.

If you have another browser installed on your iPhone, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, those browsers will also retain history, which you may search through in the same way.

How to clear the cache on your iPhone (and why you should)

How many tabs are open on your mobile browser right now? Go ahead, check -- you might be surprised by what you find.

Americans spend over five hours a day on their smartphones. That's over five hours of your phone potentially accessing, retrieving, and saving cache and cookies, which can negatively impact your iPhone's storage space .

What is cache?

Cache is the temporary storage of some data, like parts of a website from the last time you visited it, for example. Browser cache is content from a website that is stored on your phone during a browser session to help the browser execute faster the next time you visit that page.

Also:  How to clear Google search cache on Android

Cache data can slow down your phone's overall browsing performance, however, since it takes up storage space on your device, so it's good to clear it out regularly. In this article, we mainly focus on clearing web browser cache on an iPhone, but you should know that other types of cache include mobile app cache and CPU cache.

How to clear cache on iPhone

What you'll need: Everything you need to clear your browser cache is within the iPhone's settings app or the Safari app, so grab your iPhone to get started.

Keep in mind that clearing the cache can clear private data, which can close all open tabs in Safari. This is also likely to log you out of all your websites, prompting you to sign in again the next time you open them.

How do I clear the cache from Chrome on iPhone?

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser, it may have a substantial amount of data stored on your device, which could also slow down performance.

To clear the cache in Chrome, open the Google Chrome app and follow these steps:

  • Tap  Settings .
  • Go to  Privacy and Security .
  • Select  Clear Browsing Data .
  • Select the time from which to delete the data (if you want to delete all your browsing history, choose All Time ).
  • Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.
  • Confirm by tapping  Clear Browsing Data  at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Done when you've deleted the Chrome cache.

Also: Apple releases iOS 17.4 with podcast transcripts, new emojis, and EU app store changes

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How can I browse on Safari without history?

If you're learning how to clear cache on an iPhone, you may also be wondering if there's a way to use Safari without saving any browsing history. You can turn on Private Browsing by following these steps:

  • Open  Safari .
  • Tap on  Tabs .
  • Choose Private .

You can also enable private browsing by going to your iPhone Settings, finding Safari, and toggling on the private option.

How do I clear my app cache on my iPhone?

To clear the app cache from your iPhone Settings app, you can either delete the app and reinstall it, offload it, or try to clear the cache from within the app. Unfortunately, iOS apps don't have consistent settings across the board that would allow you to clear the cache of every app.

Also: Apple warns: Don't put your wet iPhone in rice. Do this instead

Apps like TikTok and CapCut, for example, have options to Clear Cache within their respective settings. Amazon lets users delete their browsing history, while the Reddit app can clear local history. It all depends on what the app's settings let you do.

Is "clear cache" the same as offloading?

Not exactly, though app offloading can help if your phone is slowed down by low storage. To offload an app  means to uninstall an app without deleting any documents or data associated with it.

Also: Apple secures iMessage against threats from the future

To offload an app, go to  Settings , then  General , choose  iPhone Storage  and select the app to offload, then tap  Offload App . If you ever download it again, you'll pick up where you left off for that app.

Are cookies and cache the same thing?

Cookies and cache are not the same. Cookies are data files that websites send to your phone, including things like saved passwords to keep you logged into an account or even the website preferences from the previous time you visited.

Also: I tested the best Mint alternatives, and this is my new favorite money app

Though they do sound harmless, cookies can also track how you browse the internet. They monitor patterns in your browsing and search history, even seeing what you clicked on or what your mouse hovered over. Ever made an innocuous search on Amazon only to find ads for it on all the apps you use? Cookies likely made that possible.

Can I block cookies on my iPhone?

While you can block cookies on Safari, the ranks are divided on whether you should. Blocking cookies entirely means that websites won't be able to get information from you, but it also means that some websites may not even work correctly on your browser. A lot of users actually enjoy a more personalized browsing experience, so cookies are a good thing for them.

If you'd like to block cookies in Safari, follow these steps:

  • Go to  Settings  and select  Safari .
  • Tap on the toggle next to  Block All Cookies .

There are also third-party extensions that help you block cookies and trackers in Google Chrome, like Ghostery and Disconnect .

How do I check iPhone storage?

On an iPhone, Settings can show you what's taking up most of your media storage, like photos, videos, and music. You can also see what each particular app's storage consumption is, which includes temporary data. To view the details of your iPhone's storage space, follow these steps:

  • Go to the iPhone Settings .
  • Tap on General .
  • Select iPhone Storage .
  • Scroll through to find the app you're looking for.
  • Tap on the app to view storage status and options.

Unfortunately, you can't clear your iPhone cache for third-party apps by going into your Settings app, but this gives you a visual of your iPhone's storage and the option to delete or offload apps.

Also: Here's the fastest way to declutter your iPhone and free up Gigabytes of space

  • Look for app folders and search for Safari in the home screen.
  • Use App Library to bring Safari back to the home screen.

Fix 1: Unhide Home Screen Page

If the Safari icon has gone missing along with other app icons, you might have hidden a home screen page.

Step 1: On your iPhone’s home screen, touch and hold the page dots at the bottom until you see the thumbnails of your home screen.

Step 2: The pages that have checkmarks under them are enabled. Look for the page with the Safari browser and tap on the selection circle under it to enable it.

That’s it. Now, go to your phone’s home screen, and you should see the Safari icon.

Fix 2: Remove Screen Time Restrictions From iPhone

If you can’t find Safari on your iPhone using the above methods, you must check and remove screen time restrictions from the Safari app.

Step 1: Open Settings on your iPhone > go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions .

Step 2: Tap on Allowed Apps . Turn off the toggle next to Safari . It should turn green.

That’s it. Go to your home screen, and you should see the Safari app. If the Safari icon is missing, use the above methods to put it back on the home screen.

Fix 3: Reset Home Screen Layout

Resetting the home screen layout of your iPhone will delete folders that you have created on the home screen and put all the pre-installed Apple apps, including Safari, at their original location. This will help in restoring Safari to the home screen.

To reset the home screen layout, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout .

How to delete your search history

safari history time on iphone

Your search history is a window into your inner life . Anyone with access to it knows what your hobbies and interests are, your sexual orientation and preferences, the things that worry you (for example your medical concerns), your political affiliations, your financial situation, and much more.

In this article, we’ll explore why it’s important to delete your search and (closely related) browsing history and how to do it, but also the limitations of deleting your search and browsing history. Unfortunately, you can’t delete everything that’s out there.

However, moving forward, you can take steps to prevent others from seeing and logging your search and browsing history in the first place. We’ll also discuss these.

Why you should delete your search history

Search history you can’t delete

Does turning off personalized ads prevent google from tracking me.

  • Prevention is always better than a cure

As we noted above, your search history and browsing history reveal a great deal about you. This highly personal information is extremely valuable for the purposes of surveillance and influencing your behaviors.

Targeted advertising

The more advertising and analytics companies know about you, the more successfully they can target you with ever more personalized ads. Our analysis found that your data may be worth over $600 a year (new window) for advertising purposes alone.

Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is now worth over $1.9 trillion (new window) , a staggering fortune, made by offering services that are almost entirely “free” to use, but which it monetizes by selling your search queries to advertising and analytics companies.

Google so dominates the search engine landscape that searching for anything online is now commonly referred to as “googling”, and its search services form the backbone of the other services it offers, such as Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.

Government mass surveillance

In 2013, Edward Snowden exposed (new window) the stupefying scale and ambition of the United States and United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programs, which operated on a “ collect it all (new window) ” principle to harvest data from almost everyone on the planet. Little has changed in real terms since then, and in many ways, things (new window) are now worse (new window) .

The NSA's PRISM surveillance program

And it’s not just NSA and its 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes allies that spy on your search history. Almost all governments have some form of mass surveillance system, even if it’s only legislation that requires internet service providers (ISPs ) to log their customers’ browsing histories and store this data where it can be accessed by government agencies for a certain amount of time.

How to delete Google search history

You can tell Google to delete your search history. Whether it really deletes it is hard to know, but doing this probably prevents Google from using past search history to directly target you with ads or selling it to third-party advertising and analytics companies. It’s anybody’s guess whether governments can still access this “deleted” data.

How to delete Google search history on your desktop

The easiest way to delete your entire Google search history across all apps and devices is using a desktop browser. To do this:

1. Visit myactivity.google.com/myactivity (new window) and sign in with your Google account. You can now review the information Google keeps about you. When you’re ready, click Delete .

2. Select All time (or whatever time range you prefer)

Select a time range

3. Click Select all (or select which apps you wish to delete your search history from). You can delete the search history from all Google apps here, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play, and more. Click Next when you’re ready.

Choose activities to delete

4. Click Delete to confirm you’d like to delete your activity.

How to delete your browser search history

Of course, it may not just be Google and your government that you’d rather not see your search history. Deleting your browser search history prevents friends, family, and colleagues who have physical access to your device from seeing what you’ve been up to online.

In this section, we’ll look at how to delete your search history in a selection of popular browsers on different platforms. Please be aware, though, that much like using incognito/private mode , deleting your browser history does nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from seeing your search history , such as your ISP or the websites you visit.

Learn about browsers that are good for your privacy (new window)

On the desktop, open Firefox and go to ☰ → Settings → Privacy & Security → History → Clear History… → T ime range to clear → select Everything from the dropdown menu (or whichever time range you prefer) → Clear now .

How to delete search history on Samsung Internet

On your Android device, tap ☰ → History → ⋮ → Clear history (to delete all your search history).

Delete Samsung Internet history on Android

You can ask Google to delete your search history from its apps, and you can delete any search history stored locally on your devices. However, your ISP can see every website you visit online, and almost all ISPs log this information (in many countries, they are required to do so by law).

In some counties (such as the United States), ISPs are permitted to sell customer data to advertisers (new window) . In almost every country, they will hand over the data at the request of law enforcement or government agencies.

No ISP will delete your browsing history just because you ask it to, so there’s little you can do about the data it already has. However, moving forward, you can prevent your ISP from seeing what you do by subscribing to a VPN service such as Proton VPN.

A VPN routes your internet connection from your device to a VPN server run by a commercial VPN service such as Proton VPN. The connection between your device and the VPN server is securely encrypted so that no one sitting between your device and the VPN server can see the contents of your data.

How a VPN works

DNS queries , which translate human-friendly URLs into computer-friendly numerical values, are usually handled by your ISP. But when you connect to a VPN, it routes these DNS queries through the encrypted VPN tunnel and handles them itself.

Learn more about how a VPN works

Your ISP can see that you’re connected to an IP address belonging to the VPN server but can’t see which websites you connect to after that.

Your ISP and websites you visit see the IP address of the VPN server

This means that connecting to a VPN prevents your ISP from seeing what you do online. And because most government mass surveillance programs rely on requiring ISPs to log their customers’ browsing activity, a trustworthy VPN is effective at preventing governments from collecting your search history through untargeted surveillance.

[ Protect your browsing history with Proton VPN ]

To prevent Google from using your browsing history to serve you personalized ads, head over to Google’s My Ad Center (new window) , sign in with your Google account, and toggle the Personalized ads switch off .

Turn off personalized ads in Google's My Ad Center

Please be aware, though, that turning off personalized ads in Google’s settings doesn’t stop Google from tracking your browsing history . But it does change how that data is used. When you opt out of personalized ads, Google will no longer use your browsing history to serve you ads based on your interests and behavior. Instead, you’ll receive ads based on factors like your general location or the content of the site you are visiting.

However, Google may still collect and use your data for other purposes, such as improving its services, developing new features, or ensuring the security of its systems. This data collection can include your search history, the videos you watch on YouTube, and your interactions with other Google services.

Final thoughts: Prevention is always better than a cure

Asking Google (and other online services) to delete your search history from within its apps is probably better than doing nothing at all to protect your privacy. But a far better way is to use apps and services that don’t collect your search history in the first place. For example:

  • Use Proton apps. When you search for emails in Proton Mail, events in Proton Calendar, or files in Proton Drive, the search is performed locally on your device (new window) . Just as our zero-access encryption (new window) ensures no one but you can access your data stored on Proton services, we also have no access to your search history.
  • Use your browser’s private or incognito mode . While your browser’s private or incognito mode will do nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from knowing what you do online, it will at least protect your online privacy from others who share your devices.
  • Use a privacy-focused search engine (new window) — Alternative search engines to Google, such as DuckDuckGo, don’t log your IP address or record your search history.
  • Block third-party cookies to prevent websites from tracking you across the internet.
  • If you must use Google, don’t search while signed in to your Google Account, and use a VPN so Google can’t link your IP address to your searches.

It’s not easy to stay private on the internet, but with some common sense and the help of privacy-focused services such Proton, it is possible to avoid most online tracking.

Apple Finally Addresses Major Screen Time Vulnerability After Three Years

Devesh Beri

A major vulnerability in Apple’s Screen Time parental controls is finally being addressed. This bug allowed users, mostly children, to bypass restrictions and access inappropriate content on iPhones and iPads.

The security flaw involved a simple trick: entering a specific string of characters in the Safari address bar. And bam! It bypassed Screen Time’s web content filtering, giving users access to adult websites, violent content, and other restricted materials.

Here’s the kicker: Security researchers reported this issue to Apple multiple times over the past three years, but their reports were seemingly ignored. It wasn’t until a journalist, Joanna Stern , investigated the issue that Apple acknowledged the bug and promised a fix in the next software update.

Parents have reported other problems as well, including:

  • Screen Time limits designed to restrict app usage for a certain amount of time are easily bypassed.
  • Charts showing a child’s device usage can be inaccurate or blank.
  • Parents don’t always receive notifications for app download requests or time extensions.

Apple claims to have addressed many of these issues in recent updates. For many parents, Screen Time’s unreliability is a deal-breaker. Some are even considering switching to Android devices for better parental control options.

To adjust content restrictions, navigate to “ Screen Time ” -> “ Content & Privacy Restrictions .” This lets you set your preferences for various apps, websites, and key system functionalities, including access to location services or the photo library.

For web content, devices can be restricted from accessing adult content through an automatic filter or a specifically approved list of websites.

All this exemplifies how major tech industries often do not seem to care about the general public until a well-known figure brings it up. This treatment is unfair to the general public.

Anyway, for now, the best you can do is keep your devices updated.

Apple iOS privacy settings to change now

How to make your iPhone and iPad as private as possible

safari history time on iphone

Privacy is a central part of Apple’s marketing campaigns and it sounds great in the company’s ads and product announcements. But actually making things as private as possible on Apple devices does require a bit of effort and time.

We’ve assembled all the settings you can change on your iPhone and iPad to make the devices as private as possible. These instructions are all based on iOS 15, the newest version of the operating system, but details can vary between updates.

Apple has added a number of settings and reports to its iOS mobile operating system, which runs on iPhones and iPads, to make personal information more private from webpages, third-party apps and even Apple itself. It all starts with a trip to the iOS settings app. (Most settings use a toggle that is green when on and gray when off.)

There’s only so much that can be done on the device-side, so make sure you’re also keeping an eye on settings for the most popular apps themselves with the rest of our privacy guide .

If you only do one thing

Has tipping gone too far? Here’s a guide on when to tip.

Ad tracking is when companies collect information about what you’re up to online, where you are, and details about who you are. The data can be sold to third-parties to better target ads to you. This setting lets you decline all requests to track you by default.

  • Go to Settings → Privacy → Tracking and turn off “Allow Apps to Request to Track” so the toggle is gray, not green. If you see apps listed below, they requested permission to track you in the past. Turn them off to revoke access.

If you’re still concerned about privacy

Record what your apps are up to

This new feature, added in the iOS 15.2 update, gives a snapshot of what Apple and third-party apps are up to. After you turn it on, let it run for a few hours or days and come back. It saves up to 7 days of data. You’ll see a lot of information in a full report, though not much guidance on what it means or what to do about it.

  • To turn it on go to Settings → Privacy → (scroll to bottom) App Privacy Report → Turn on App Privacy Report
  • Come back and look at the first section — Data & Sensor Access — to see what apps are accessing more information than needed to do their main functions. It could include your location, microphone, camera, contacts or media library. A weather app, for example, shouldn’t need access to your microphone. Unfortunately, there is no way to revoke access from within the report so you’ll have to take note and do it elsewhere in settings or delete that app, which we’ll get to in the next section.
  • Scroll down to see what domains apps and websites are accessing. This information is harder to parse and take action on. There’s little help from Apple here except to say if you see multiple apps and sites contacting the same domain, it could be using your info to create a profile.

Big Tech is pushing apps on your devices. Here’s how to take back control of your apps

Revoke access to your data liberally

This is one of the best things you can do for your privacy. Apps can access huge swath of data about you and your device, but Apple has included a way to control who sees what.

  • Go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services. Think of your location as one of the most sensitive categories of information. It can reveal where you live and work, what businesses or doctors you frequent and if you go any place sensitive like a protest. You can turn off Location Services and revoke access for all apps, but that might stops key features from working on certain apps like Weather or Uber. Instead, go down the list and manage them one-by-one
  • When you tap on an app, it will give you up to four types of location access to chose from: Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always. Read the app’s explanation for why it needs your location, then choose the most conservative sharing option. Very few, if any, should be given “Always” access unless it’s a trusted app that uses your constant location to function, say a trusted fitness app mapping all your movement. You can start with “Never” and come back later if it impacts how the app works. There may also be an option to share precise location. Turn this off unless there’s a good reason.
  • Go back to the main privacy page and go through each information category such as Calendars, Photos and Microphone. Turn off access for any listed apps you think do not need that type of information and be aggressive. For example, you can tap on Contacts and turn off access for Amazon, Clubhouse and Venmo, but keep it on for encrypted messaging apps.

Stop Apple from targeting its own ads

Apple makes a big fuss about other companies targeting ads, but it does it as well. The company’s ads appear in places like the App Store, Apple News and the Stocks app. There’s an easy way to turn off Apple’s targeting.

  • Go to Settings → Privacy → Apple Advertising (at the bottom of the screen). Toggle off the option for Personalized Ads so it is gray.

Stop sharing data for analytics

Apple and its developers collect data about how you use your device and their products to improve products and services, but if you want, you can cut off access. (You may already have opted out when you set up your device.)

  • Go to Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements (at the bottom of the screen). You can safely toggle all of these settings off, so that they’re gray instead of green. Some are more revealing than others, such as the “Improve Siri & Dictation” setting, which lets the company review actual audio recordings from your devices that use its voice assistant. You can turn off the option to share iPhone Analytics on top to disable them all at once.

Browse the Internet while sharing less

These settings can make Safari more private, though you also have the option to use a third-party browser app on iOS, such as Firefox.

  • Go to Settings → Safari → Search Engine. Change your default search engine from Google to a more private option like DuckDuckGo.
  • Back in Safari, scroll down to the Privacy & Security section. Make sure Prevent Cross-Site Tracking is turned on, Hide IP Address is set to “ From Trackers” (or “Trackers and Websites” if you’re using iCloud Private Relay), and that you turn off Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement which deactivates the tool for advertisers. You can turn on the Block All Cookies option, but be prepared for some websites to act odd.
  • Tap on “Clear History and Website Data” if you want a clean slate, but you may need to log on again to some sites.
  • Turn on an ad blocker. Under Settings → Safari → General, tap on Extensions. You can view Safari extensions in the app store and look for content blockers that you want to install, such as Adblock, Wipr or Crystal.
  • Feel free to use the Private Browsing mode in Safari, but remember it is just hiding your search history on the phone or connected devices.

Open emails in peace

New in iOS 15, this feature stops companies that send you emails from getting your IP address or knowing if you’ve opened their message.

  • Go to Settings → Mail → Privacy Protection. Turn on the toggle for Protect Mail Activity.

Lock down Siri

  • Turn off “Hey Siri,” the feature that leaves your device’s microphone on so it can listen for the phrase continuously to activate the personal assistant. Go to Settings → Siri & Search → turn off “Listen for ‘Hey Siri.’ ” You’ll have to activate it manually.
  • Scroll down to Siri & Dictation History and hit the option to Delete Siri & Dictation History.

How to keep your intimate, embarrassing or damaging text messages as private as possible

If you want to be extra cautious

Turn on iCloud Private Relay

This feature is new, still in beta and requires a paid iCloud subscription, which starts at $1 a month. ICloud Private Relay is Apple’s twist on a virtual private network, or VPN, that works on Safari traffic. It hides your IP address from websites and sends browsing activity through a third-party, so your network provider doesn’t see that information. Your IP address and websites you visit aren’t linked, making it more difficult for third-parties to track you. (Unlike a traditional VPN, iCloud Private Relay doesn’t let you use IP addresses from different countries to try to circumvent country-based rules.)

  • Go to Settings → Your Name → iCloud → click on Private Relay (Beta) and turn on the Private Relay toggle. Click IP address Location and set to “Use country and time zone” if you’d rather websites and network providers not know where you are.
