Best 4 Nights In Majorca Itinerary For Solo Travelers

' src=

Majorca, located in the Balearic Islands, is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, stunning architecture, rich pine forest, and fantastic restaurants.

Sounds like paradise, right? After visiting this past summer solo AF, I can say for sure it is!

Most of us won’t get unlimited time here in Majorca, so I created this itinerary for the perfect 4 nights in Majorca!

An independent traveler enjoys a peaceful moment in Mallorca, sitting on the green grass, gazing at the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria in the distance, symbolizing the beauty of solo travel.

For geographical reference, Ibiza , known to most as “the party island” is 2 hours away by ferry . You might be wondering what makes Majorca so special.

Why should I choose the Balearic Islands over any other island? Well, if you are someone who likes to mix old town exploring with turquoise blue waters and white sand, then Majorca is the place for you!

This island is also very safe , perfect for any solo traveling female. It is also a popular holiday destination for a girls’ trip.

Rarely do I say that I want to go back to a place, but Majorca is the exception! There are so many fun things to do and explore here; I see myself coming back year after year.

Should I Rent a Car in Majorca?

To see some pretty cool spots outside of Palma in Majorca, you will need to rent a car! I have lots of tips for driving in Majorca and renting a car .

My best advice is to plan your trip according. There is a lot to do in just Palma, but if you want to explore some of the best beaches you should rent a car.

🚗 See the whole island of Majorca with a rental car! Check rates & availability !

Is It Safe To Visit Majorca Solo?

I had no issues with safety when I was visiting Majorca. It is always a good idea to do a little bit of research on the subject.

Majorca has an excellent reputation for being a safe destination and there are many ways to make sure you have a safe trip.

A serene solo traveler strolls through a historic quarter in Mallorca, with the island's iconic architecture in the background, embodying the charm and independence of solo travel.

Solo travelers should avoid walking alone in secluded areas at night, be aware of pickpockets in crowded places, and take basic safety precautions such as not carrying large amounts of money.

In general, it is always best to exercise common sense when you are traveling alone. Use your intuition and be aware of your surroundings, as you would for any other destination.

Familiarize yourself with the local laws, customs, and culture to help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Best Time To Visit Majorca

The best time to visit Majorca depends on what you are most interested in doing.

The best weather for the beach is from May through October. But there are also a lot of things you can do in Mallorca in winter .

If you visit between June, July, and August, you should prepare yourself for the crowds and the inflated prices. I tend to avoid traveling in peak season if possible.

How to Spend Four Nights in Majorca

Let me start this Mallorca itinerary by giving you a few ideas on where to stay solo. When I travel alone , I always stay in the most central hotel I can afford.

When traveling alone, it’s important not to feel isolated, so you don’t get lonely.

For me the best area to stay in Majorca was in the capital Palma. I just loved being surrounded by all the action.

Below is a short list of some of the best hotels in the capital of Palma.

All these best places to stay in Mallorca are stylish, modern, and incredibly convenient.

Ramón Llull House is one of the best places to stay in Majorca! I stayed in a one-bedroom with a fully equipped kitchen, washer, and dryer.

Ramón Llull House is so conveniently located close to the old town and around a 20-minute walk to the beach! I highly recommend it!

Es Princep Boutique Hotel

singles travel mallorca

Es Princep Boutique Hotel is within a stone’s throw of the ocean. Rooftop pool and bar! This is where the solo female traveler with style stays!

Sant Francesc Hotel Singular

singles travel mallorca

Sant Francesc Hotel Singular – This stellar boutique hotel is located in the center of the old town.

Holidays to Majorca can be as inexpensive as you want them to be since it is free to relax by the beach all day. When I was younger, I was all about the cheapest possible option. Now that I am a bit older and less interested in staying out all night, I make different choices.

You can expect my suggestions to fall into the mid-range price point . All my hotel recommendations for 4 nights in Majorca are considered boutique hotels.

If you travel in the high season, which is between May and September , accommodations can be very costly. I have noticed super cheap flights , but overly expensive hotels.

Something to consider is visiting just at the very beginning or end of the season. I rarely go places in high season; for me, the end of the season is the best. That is when I find the best deals.

For the Beach Lovers

4 Nights In Majorca

If you want to make your Marjoca trip all about the sandy beaches here is a complete list.

My Majorca itinerary will focus on the capital of Palma. With this list, you can easily add to your itinerary.

⛵️ Mallorca Boat & Train Tour: Check Rates & Availablity

  • Cala Bona – This sandy beach is located on the upper east coast of Majorca. You will find it is a popular holiday destination for British tourists. There is a bicycle track that will take you from Cala Bona to Cala Millor, San Coma, and Son Servera.
  • Palma Nova – This resort is often a package holiday deal you will find popular with families visiting the island. Palma Nova Beach is located in the southwest of the island.
  • Cala Millor – Dreaming of turquoise water, with crystal clear visibility? Let your beach fantasy come true here in Cala Millor. This Balearic island beach is located on the east coast of the island and has a lovely promenade.
  • Calas de Mallorca – This resort area is popular with families and singles. It is located on the east coast of the island, south of Porto Cristo.
  • Santa Ponsa – Located on the southwest side of Palma, is most popular with British tourists.

4 Nights In Majorca

For your first day in Majorca, you can ease into the city and get yourself acclimated to downtown Palma. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon marveling at the incredible architecture and laid-back culture. When you are looking for some tapas in the center of the old town, I have a suggestion:

  • Ombu – This tapas restaurant has the best Sangria in Majorca! As well as the most delicious tapas. You should plan your visit and get a table reserved. Majorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the summer. It’s smart to have a plan when it comes to restaurants.

After your tapas, it’s time to stroll over to the Catedral-Basilica de Santa Marie de Mallorca ! Spend a couple of hours exploring this incredible Gothic church. You can skip the long line if you purchase tickets with the link above.

Bring your camera to the incredible Cathedral for some photographs! If you go early, you will likely have the whole area to yourself as I did.

4 Nights In Majorca

After that, I would suggest having a rest before dinner. The Spanish tradition of “Siesta” is popular here in Majorca.

That means that after 4 pm some shops will briefly close till around 7 pm.

  • Spot – For dinner, I would highly recommend Spot! It was my favorite meal on the island. You should get dinner reservations to guarantee that you will get a table. This restaurant was a little further out than the city center, but not too far. I made the journey on foot in 25 minutes from my hotel.

If you are still looking to squeeze a little more fun into your evening, check out the Marina. There you will find lots of bars with patios overlooking the docks.

Wake up bright and early, and get ready for the beach! Depending on your accommodations, you might have breakfast included at your hotel.

If you don’t have breakfast available and are looking for a place open early, check out Hotel Cappuccino.

They have outdoor seating, and you don’t have to be a hotel guest to eat here.

Platja de Can Pere Antoni Beach

This is your white sand beach in the capital Palma. It was an easy 15-minute walk from my hotel. You can do a few things depending on your budget.

  • Bring a blanket, and towel, and pack a lunch from items at a local store ($)
  • All of the above, plus rent a lounge chair on the beach for 15 euros for the day. ($)
  • Go to Assaona Gastrobeach Club and for 25 euros, get a lounge chair, towel, and the ability to order food and drinks served to you. If you are wondering, I chose this option. I found it to be worth every penny! They also have a full restaurant and a nice bathroom! Make a reservation ahead of time . ($$)

4 Nights In Majorca

For dinner, I would suggest something a little casual after a day at the beach. If you like tacos, you MUST try this restaurant:

L’Informal Tacos

Eat More Tacos! That is always my motto!

This little taco restaurant was straight-up impressive! It has a chill vibe and some incredible eats!

Seating is LIMITED, so I would recommend calling ahead. L’Informal Tacos is so good I would fly back just to go here again.

L'Informal Tacos

Another wonderful choice for Tapas is:

Saranna Cafe & Gastrobar

Saranna Cafe & Gastrobar

I had a wonderful experience here at the Saranna Cafe! It is a small restaurant, with only a handful of tables outside.

This place is perfect for a glass of Sangria and some tapas! If you are planning to visit the Museu Fundación, Saranna Cafe is conveniently located minutes away.

Feeling like a day excursion to the east coast of the island? When you have 4 nights in Majorca you will have time for this! The Drach Caves are listed as very popular holiday destinations for many that visit the island. In most of the package holiday itineraries, I often saw them listed.

solo travel guide

To visit these caves you could rent a car and do it yourself, or do an organized tour, which I highly suggest. You can choose from either a full day or a half-day. I would suggest going with the full day!

Included in this full-day tour is sightseeing in Porto Cristo! The little fishing village of Porto Cristo has the most idyllic setting. Get ready to be amazed by turquoise waters and sandy beaches.

*Alternative Day Trip Idea – Check out the city of Sineu!

solo travel guide

Sineu is located inland at the most central point of the island. The village of Sineu is known for its weekly Wednesday market. The market draws large crowds from all over the island shopping for local produce.

Sineu has less than 4,000 inhabitants and is a real escape from tourism. If you visit this village for some authentic Majorca cuisine, be sure and try Sa Plaça.

Rooftop Cocktails with a view

After returning from your full-day excursion on the East Coast, no better way to unwind than having a cocktail on a rooftop. I suggest that you book a table for a drink atop the Hotel Es Princep . You could have dinner here, but I would recommend just a drink and saving room for dinner at Quadrat Restaurant & Garden .

The restaurant is only a 7 min walk from the Hotel Es Princep! It is the perfect distance to do both places in one night.

Rooftop at Hotel Es Princep

For your last full day and night on your holidays to Majorca, you should make it a special one! The island of Majorca has so much to offer everyone. If you are someone looking to visit a pine forest for hiking, the Balearic Islands have you covered.

Is Solo Travel Fun In Majorca

Is Majorca a destination for solo-traveling females? I say hell, yes! Palma can be perfect for either a solo getaway or girls’ weekend. It is all in what you make of it.

What I truly loved about Palma was that it’s not just a beach resort or a party island. On the island of Majorca, you can explore the old city, relax by the beach, and even visit pine forests. This is what makes Palma so freaking special.

Needing some solo female travel encouragement?

I know that traveling solo can be a little intimidating or boring sounding.

I promise you, solo travel is empowering and life-changing! Need a little more convincing? I have written a post all about solo traveling.

Pro Tip:  Even though I found solo travel to be super safe, I ALWAYS recommend getting   travel insurance  to avoid any mishaps. Lost luggage or getting sick can happen at any time.

The over all experience was fine, excellent hotels, first class bikes and the navigation system fairly good. My negative comments are the information flow and guidence, especially in the beginning, how to check in to the tour, the reception and so forth. We had expected ore formally start and some advice according to this special route. It was a need for this in relation to utility of battery function and consuming of power. We had some problems in the Tramuntana, near Sierra de Tramuntana, ran out of electricity and a little help to get from the organizer. We had the general feeling in the tour that we were more or less on our own. That can also be good

I recommend Mallorca for female solo travels. Itā€™s a safe island. You can have beach life and nightlife. The island is quite small, but I recommend to rent a car and visit it, driving is safe, the routes are well maintained.

Solo travel experience

Spent a few days walking, hiking, and swimming. So much to see and so much accessible by foot or bike (lots of cyclists and rentals everywhere). Incredible beaches (sandy on one side, rocky on the other). Super safe, stress-free place. Absolutely recommend it for solo travel.

Group travel experience

We felt very safe during our stay, I can recommend booking a ā€œFincaā€ instead of a hotel! There are many houses (for example on Airbnb) with great prices if youā€™re planning on going with a group of people (so the prices can split). SantanyĆ has some great restaurants! Our favourite has been ā€œAnoaā€ - weā€™ve been there twice in a week.

Mallorca is amazing. But better to rent a car next time. The island offers a loy and the vibes are great. Beautiful views everywhere. The city is clean, port is nice, the weather is good too. Many nice cozy beaches accesible by bus

singles travel mallorca

I recently returned from a short solo trip to Majorca. I felt very safe there. I even left my belongings on the beach, but for peace of mind, I kept my phone, documents, and money in a waterproof case. I didn't experience any discomfort traveling around the island.

Mallorca was beautiful, warm, and I felt safe there. On the first day, I visited Palmanova and relaxed on the beach. It was pleasant, but too cold to swim. The next day, I took a bus to Palma and did a sightseeing tour around the city, stopping at the castle. I also took part in a boat trip. The cathedral in Palma was stunning. Then I walked around the city. On the third day, I boarded a hundred-year-old train from Palma to Soller, which was the best part of my trip.

Majorca, a singles paradise

Information

Compared with Majorca’s tourist resorts, the island’s interior has resisted as a way of appealing to discreet leisure, which is ideal for travellers who enjoy being with others and on their own. The activities for singles are affordable for everyone; they can include a visit to a prehistoric necropolis overlooking the sea, a one-day pilgrim to a mystical monastery, a thrilling dry canyoning experience or interspersed visits to cultural centres in remote parts of the island. Such plans evoke epic adventures which were typical in the past and all you need is an appetite for the unknown. Are you convinced?

Talaiotic culture beside the beach

In the heart of the Bay of Alcudia , midway on the road that connects the coastal towns of Can Picafort and ArtĆ , solo travellers will find Finca PĆŗblica de Son Real : a Balearic archaeological treasure whose extensive natural and cultural offering promises visitors with large doses of fun and a great learning experience. It was acquired by the Balearic government in 2002 and this monumental estate beside the beach is now open to the general public and reveals evidence of human settlements, dating as far back as over 4,500 years ago.

The area’s main attraction is the Son Real Necropolis , a group of dolmens and burial caves, so that the final part of your visit is a lovely tour through dunes and savin junipers. The tour also includes a spectacular visitors’ centre and archaeological museum, former Majorcan residences ( possessions ), disused sand quarries and 16 th century watchtowers.

And, once you get to the Son Real virgin beach , which is mostly rocky and very calm, it is time to get your strength back by going for a refreshing swim. The beach has so few visitors that, even in the peak season, part of it has become a nudist area over the years. Which part? Specifically, from Islote des Porros , a rocky islet very close to the shore. By the way, we recommend diving in the surrounding area because of its interesting underwater flora and fauna.

A mystical day at the Santa MarĆa de Lluc Sanctuary

Pilgrims have always been associated with solo and avid travellers, whose strong desire to reach a holy place drives them to travel near impossible distances. The Santa MarĆa de Lluc Sanctuary , located in the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range, is one of those places full of mysticism which have attracted tens of thousands of people without distinction over hundreds of years. Even nowadays, on the first Saturday of August, 50,000 people take part in the Marxa des GĆ¼ell a Lluc , a legendary pilgrimage route in Majorca which starts in Palma and covers nearly 50 kilometres of cobbled paving and a mountain before reaching Lluc.

That route can, of course, be taken anytime during the year but, if you do not have time, are not in physical form or are not willing to do this for whatever reason, the monastery and its surrounding area can be accessed by car ( Escorca is the nearest town) or by bus (line 330 from the centre of Palma).

Once there, the 17 th century Renaissance monastery will provide you with a true oasis of peace and nature. However, its best kept secret is inside: the Moreneta , a small virgin sculpted in black rock discovered by a shepherd and a priest in a nearby torrent explains the subsequent pilgrimage to the area. You can also start numerous hiking routes in the surrounding area, go inside caves such as Ses Cometes des Morts , walk around the Lluc Botanical Garden or visit the sanctuary’s museum. In short, you can live a wonderful experience, regardless of how spiritual you currently are.

An Indiana Jones route along the Pareis torrent

The Pareis torrent route starts precisely in Escorca, on the opposite direction to the monastery. It is a three-kilometre-long canyon whose vertical walls with a height of up to 200 metres lead to the beautiful Sa Calobra cove . Declared a Natural Monument in 2003, this natural descent towards the sea is considered to be one of the best summer routes in Majorca. We emphasise ‘summer’ because, since the route goes through a river, it is better to descend it when the riverbed is dry.

During the route, you will see caves ( Cova des Soldat Pelut and Cova des Romegueral are just two of the most curious ones), technical paths and small backwaters, all of this combined with superb views of the unspoilt part of the Tramuntana mountain range.

After around five hours, hikers should start seeing the river mouth, i.e. the beautiful Sa Calobra cove, with its pebbles and idyllic image surrounded by two large cliffs. In any case, since it is only a one-way route, remember that you can only return by bus (the last one is at 15.00), taxi or car.

Art galleries and refreshment stands in the uncrowded parts of Majorca

By now, you will realise that our plans for singles focus on the island’s interior, i.e. the hidden parts between the mountains and valleys, far from the tourist hotspots. Nevertheless, a rural holiday is not incompatible with activities which are ‘more or less cosmopolitan’ such as going to a bar, concert or art gallery. At the turn of the 21 st century, many remote parts of Majorca saw how disused old buildings came alive in the form of cultural centres and gastrobars, making rural life a valuable asset.

FĆ brica Ramis in the town of Inca is a good example of this revitalisation phenomenon. It was a factory occupied by leather craftsmen for over one hundred years and is now a private cultural centre, where music concerts mix with theatre events, art workshops and co-working areas. And we must not forget its restaurant, which offers visitors affordable menus from the chef Marcel Ress so that they can taste truly Majorcan dishes.

The same occurs in SantanyĆ, a charming town in south-east Majorca where an International Music Festival is held every year between April and September. This classical musical festival enables visitors to enjoy Majorca with a different background sound. Moreover, since SantanyĆ is a paradise for artists, the festival coexists with a multitude of art galleries hidden in narrow alleyways.

And, to finish off, what about music and beach at night in the small coastal town of Ses Covetes? This small paradise full of pine trees and dunes in south-east Majorca has the SĀ“Embat bar, with hippie-inspired decorations and which holds many concerts every week. Also, the Es Trenc beach resounds all night long as a never-ending invitation to a night swim.

Majorca, Spain holidays 0

Incredibly, and despite being one of the worldā€™s most popular destinations, Majorca is still one of the most beautiful, unspoilt, underrated islands you are ever likely to visit. Away from the Bay of Palma, spectacular in itself but very busy, you enter another world. A world of majestic mountains to the north and west, lovely beaches in the south and east, idyllic country hamlets dotted all over the island and pretty little fishing villages like Porto Petro, Port dā€™Andratx and Port de Soller.

And then thereā€™s Palma, with its magnificent cathedral and Moorish palace, its delightful, pedestrianised shopping quarter, its attractive yacht marina and harbour front and centuries of fascinating history, culture and art. Add to all this a sophisticated night scene and superb cuisine and you have, in our view, the perfect destination. It really is a great island to explore as everything is within easy reach and public transport is excellent (try the train ride from Palma to Soller ā€“ fabulous scenery and a memorable day out).

Spain Barcelona MICHELIN Keys Madrid Hotels

singles travel mallorca

On April 29, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Spain. This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Spain includes five Three Key hotels, 12 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Cristine Bedfor ā€” Minorca

Remarkable Personality in the Balearic Islands

Between Mallorca, Minorca, and Ibiza, the Balearic Islands display some of greatest variety in Key hotel winners across any region in the country. Mallorca, in particular, finds a bevy of options: from the small and historic ( Son Brull Hotel & Spa , Hotel Can Ferrereta , Nobis Hotel Palma ) to the stylish hotspots ( Es Princep and La Residencia ). One jewel on the island that defies typical categorization: Cap Rocat, an ancient fortress expertly remade , where the top suites occupy former cannon dugouts. On Minorca, check out Key hotels like Torralbenc , a tasteful, intimate, high-end hotel built from the bones of an old farm; or, in the capital of MahĆ³n, look at Cristine Bedfor ā€” one of the most creative, high-concept design hotels in our collection. Mandarin Oriental Ritz ā€” Madrid

Radical and Renewed Design

In Madrid, youā€™ll find Key hotels largely in historic 19th or 20th century facades. Places like Santo Mauro , in a former Dukeā€™s 1895 neoclassical mansion, or the Ritz , a Belle Ɖpoque palace that dates back to King Alfonso XIII. These are remarkable, and mainstays of our Spanish collection ā€” but weā€™re ecstatic too to celebrate grand departures from such a style. The pinnacle: Hotel Marques de Riscal , a state-of-the-art Frank Gehry building complete with titanium ā€œhairā€ (Gehryā€™s words) swooping above its vineyards. See too the ultra-modern glass boxes at Vivood Landscape Hotel outside Alicante.

Akelarre ā€” San SebastiĆ”n

Key Hotels with MICHELIN Star restaurants

The Key hotel distinction and the MICHELIN Star for restaurants are decided independently of one another, but it so happens that several hotels in Spain sport both. Among them: Akelarre in San SebastiƔn (restaurant: Akelarre ), Atrio Restaurante Hotel in CƔceres (restaurant: Atrio ), and Pepe Vieria Restaurant Hotel in Poio (restaurant: Pepe Vieira ). Not unrelated, we see too a strong crop of winery hotels. Places like Terra Dominicata (a 12th century monastery with its own vintage) and Torre del Marques (an 18th century tower with views of the olive groves) are two of our most fascinating. Are Disposable Hotel Slippers the Next Plastic Straws?

Slippers supplied by hotels ā€” flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric ā€” are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

A factory worker in a blue uniform is crouched beside a large plastic bag of disposable hotel slippers.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

In November, managers at the Arenas del Mar resort near Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica, challenged employees to come up with ways to operate more sustainably. The maintenance crew suggested electric locks on guest room doors. The food and beverage department proposed making jams from fruit peels. And the housekeepers advised: Ditch the slippers.

ā€œIt didnā€™t make sense because you use them once and throw them out,ā€ said Hans Pfister, the president and co-founder of Cayuga Collection , the hotel group that manages the resort, which took housekeepingā€™s advice. ā€œItā€™s very wasteful.ā€

Like plastic straws and mini bottles of shampoo, disposable slippers ā€” flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric, and often found bedside at turndown or bagged in hotel closets ā€” are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

ā€œAnything single-use is problematic,ā€ wrote Willy Legrand, a sustainable hospitality expert and a professor at the IU International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef, Germany, in an email. He cited the large footprint of a small slipper once you factor in production, shipping and waste. Single-use slippers, he said, ā€œfeel out of place and out of touch.ā€

Nina Boys, the vice president of sustainability for Beyond Green , a group of hotels vetted for their sustainability practices, called slippers ā€œlow-hanging fruitā€ in the fight against plastic.

Slippers as status symbols

While plastic straws can be easily replaced with paper versions and small shampoo bottles by larger dispensers, subbing for slippers is more complicated based not just on materials but cultural expectations and perceptions of luxury.

Providing slippers in hotels is rooted in the Asian tradition of removing your shoes indoors, said Diana Verde Nieto, a sustainability expert and the author of ā€œ Reimagining Luxury .ā€

ā€œAs hotels started to cater to international guests, particularly those from Asia, the provision of slippers became a way to accommodate and respect these cultural norms,ā€ Ms. Verde Nieto wrote in an email. She added that the comfort and hygiene associated with slippers has become a universal luxury standard today.

Offering slippers also helps hotels earn status ratings from travel organizations like AAA or the European Unionā€™s Hotelstars .

Some resorts have found it easier to address sustainability through food waste and community engagement than footwear. Winvian , the boutique resort with 18 cottages and one suite on 113 acres in Connecticutā€™s Litchfield Hills, grows about 70 percent of its produce on the property and built a cottage from the wood cleared at the site. Guests receive reusable sandals in the spa, but in the rooms, visitors will find plusher designs that they are encouraged to take home and reuse; about half do and the rest are discarded.

ā€œThe problem is, itā€™s one of those things that people have come to expect,ā€ said Heather Smith Winkelmann, the managing director of the resort.

Ivan Bauza is the director of sales and marketing at the Setai , a luxury hotel in Miami Beach. ā€œOur guests are very demanding and expect everything brand-new,ā€ he said, adding that amenities like full-size bottles of shampoo and slippers that are intended for guests to take home ā€” occasionally including trendy models from the boutique brand Brunch ā€” ā€œshows the luxury aspectā€ of hospitality.

ā€˜Rethinkingā€™ slippers

The waste associated with disposable slippers is sizable, according to Mr. Legrand of IU, who calculated that high-end hotels in the United States with an average occupancy of 63 percent might discard more than 10 million pairs of slippers a month.

In a 2018 study, Chekitan S. Dev, a professor in the hospitality school at Cornell University, tracked 50 hotel amenities to determine how much they were used. Only 27 percent of guests used bathrobes supplied in the rooms. ā€œWe didnā€™t study slippers, but can safely assume that as many, or a few more, use slippers, especially as they are often unpacked and placed at bedside during turndown service, encouraging their use,ā€ Mr. Dev said.

Hotel cleaning standards often dictate discarding slippers that have been removed from their packaging, according to members of Unite Here, the union that represents hotel housekeepers.

ā€œWaste from hotel slippers may seem minor when compared to larger issues like energy consumption, food waste or water usage,ā€ Mr. Legrand wrote. ā€œHowever, at the end of the day, every bit of waste adds up and increasing attention is being paid to these aspects as part of a broader sustainable industry approach.ā€

Sourcing greener footwear

Hotel companies that have made commitments to banning single-use plastics have blazed a trail to more eco-friendly slippers.

Six Senses , a collection of 23 high-end resorts, offers slippers made from natural materials like jute or bamboo, or from recycled plastic. Six Senses Crans-Montana in Switzerland stocks Kaaita felt slippers made from recycled plastic bottles that can be washed and reused or recycled at the end of their life span. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group phased out single-use slippers in 2022 and replaced them with models made of cardboard, cork and cotton that are cleaned and restocked in the rooms. The Dorian, Autograph Collection hotel in Calgary, Canada, stopped supplying disposable slippers in the hotelā€™s suites in favor of upgraded ones that are thicker and more durable; they are available on demand to guests in other rooms. Patrons are encouraged to take them home for ā€œmultiple uses rather than single use,ā€ wrote Ian Jones, the general manager, in an email.

Green Key , which vets hotels for sustainability practices, suggests hotels make slippers and other single-use amenities available on request, rather than mandating elimination. In keeping with its commitment to eliminate single-use plastics, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina only supplies slippers to guests who ask for them.

Few slipper-supplying resorts go as far to reduce footwear waste as Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali. At its on-site Sustainability Lab, which turns glass bottles into drinking glasses and old umbrellas into tote bags, shredded slipper parts become stuffing for bean bag chairs.

ā€œBy closing the loop on waste, we are creating a circular economy,ā€ said Morgan Martinello, the resortā€™s general manager.

Refuse or reuse

Will travelers start bringing their own slippers the way they carry their own water bottles and shopping bags? They might have to.

ā€œWe are having many a debate about slippers, pens, cotton balls, toiletries,ā€ said Oliver Milne-Watson, the general manager of the Newman , a luxury hotel set to open later this year in London. The rooms will not contain single-use plastics though the management has found it difficult to find a satisfying reusable slipper.

ā€œWeā€™re asking, ā€˜Can we make this with something with a longer life cycle and if not do we really need it?ā€™ā€ Mr. Milne-Watson said.

Experts doubt the needle on slippers will fully swing until travelers speak up.

ā€œWe are at the stage now with this as it was with food waste a few years ago,ā€ Mr. LaGrand, the IU professor, said. ā€œIt is when we start monitoring, measuring and quantifying both the cost of sourcing and wasting that the realization kicks in: We must do something about it!ā€

They are already on the minds of some travelers.

ā€œIā€™ve contemplated how short of a life span these tend to have in the past, and now Iā€™ve gotten into the habit of taking my used pair with me when I leave the hotel,ā€ said Karla Cobreiro, 33, a publicist based in Miami. She puts them in a carry-on alongside a sleep mask and other essentials. ā€œNow I slip into them on long flights.ā€

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These areĀ Soviet-era creations ā€“ the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as ā€œthe palaces for the people.ā€ Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds itsĀ own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses couldĀ enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldnā€™t keep up with her stories. I donā€™t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Ā  Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who canā€™t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of ourĀ all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1.Ā Komsomolskaya Metro StationĀ  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
