Avoid traveling during the summer season because of the recent heat waves.

What to Wear

The National dress of Pakistan is Shalwar Kameez and Dupatta, and it is being worn by the people there. However, Karachi is among the most liberal cities of Pakistan and jeans, t-shirts are a common norm both by the locals and the tourists. Mini-skirts and shorts are not the preference, while jeans and tops would work anywhere in Karachi and they are totally fine among the locals.

Karachi is a multicultural city and is a home to all the cultures in Pakistan. Cultural languages are spoken and understood here. However, Urdu is the National Language and common one used for communication.

Don’t get panic. English is being taught in Pakistan since grade 1 and everybody here can communicate in English.

The currency used in Karachi is the Pakistani Rupees, where 105.38 rupees is equal to 1 US dollar. This currency is valid all across Pakistan.

Free Wi-Fi & Local Sim Card

The Karachi Airport, good quality restaurants, malls, and hotels offer free Wi-Fi service. The local sim-card and 4G service providers include Jazz-Warid, Zong, while Ufone and Telenor provide 3G service.

Karachi is also a home to several cultural institutions, such as the National Academy of Performing Arts or Thespianz Theater. Kara Film Festival is an annual festival of Independent Pakistan and International films. Also, the All Pakistan Music Conference has been holding an annual music festival since 2004.

Local Cuisines

Biryani? Yes. Karachi Biryani is one famous dish all around the world. Boti Kabab, Sultani Dal, Chapati, Seekh Kabab, Qorma, Karahi, Awardhi Mutton Biryani are some of the favorites. While Karachi cuisine is incomplete if one does not mention Paan, Samosa, and Gola Ganda, Karachiaites cannot live without it, it is a staple.

Getting Around

Local transport, Uber, and Careem are available all across Karachi so getting around is not a big deal. You can hire a car and driver as well or can rent a car and drive all by yourself. However, getting around carrying expensive belongings is not recommended in Karachi, to be on the safe side and escape risk.

Right or Left Driving

The driving system followed in Karachi is the left driving system. If you are not used to of it, don’t drive and hire a driver as the roads are busy and traffic rules are not considered a big thing by major public transport drivers there.

Don’t Drive and Stay Safe 🙂

How many days for Karachi

The city though offers a lot but it can be viewed in 4 to 5 days. The tour can be managed with 1 day for beaches and one for island while the rest of the two or three days for the cultural and architectural sites.

How Safe is Karachi

Karachi had been among the dangerous cities of the world almost five years back. However, the crime rate has decreased greatly after the operation against criminals and extremists in 2013.

The Pakistani Rangers have de-rooted the criminal settings and have eradicated almost all of the criminals. There is more than 80% decrease in the crime rate of the city. Nevertheless, it is advised to avoid carrying expensive belongings while freely roaming around the city. Be careful in general (and follow common sense rules).

"City of the Quaid"

Karachi tourism.

Karachi is one of Pakistan's most important cities, serving as its cosmopolitan, financial and industrial hub. The former capital of the country, it is also the site of two Pakistani seaports, namely the Port Bin Qasim and Karachi Port. It was an important part of colonial British India, serving as the capital of the region of the time, and continues to retain its value and power in the region and country.

Karachi has appeared on the global maps since the 3rd century BC, serving as the city used by Alexander the Great in his conquest against Babylonia. Due to its location by the sea, it was a prominent city of colonial India, and has thus had economic activity being conducted through the region for centuries. The cityscape is one of the most scenic in the country, from beautiful colonial European buildings to magnificent Islamic architecture to modern structures of the 21st century, all with the sandy beaches forming an attractive backdrop to complete the picture perfect scenery. Karachi also boasts of being Pakistan's most culturally diverse city, serving as a melting pot of South Asian cultures including Bangladeshis, Indians, Afghans, and the Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar. As a result of the cultural mix and extensive history, the city is home to many of Pakistan's most eminent museums such as the National Museum of Pakistan. The beauty of Karachi lies with its equal balance of man-made structures with the natural beauty of the numerous parks spread out around the city, combined with the fine background of the blue horizon of the beaches.

Whether you are visiting Karachi for the first time or not the sea view beach must be your first priority.  The sea view beach is among the most beautiful and popular beaches in Pakistan.

It is located a short distance from Clifton beach although many people refer to Clifton beach as a sea view both are different.  The sea view beach is located alongside Abdul Sattar Edhi  Avenue, DHA.

If you want to just relax and take some time to hear and see the natural beauty of the sea then Sea View beach is one of the options in Karachi.

I would strongly recommend you to visit the beach as early as possible around 6 a.m to 7 a.m. morning. At this time there will not be many people on the beach in their environment that will be clean and the best thing you will hear is the sound of the ocean.

Instead of relaxing and enjoying there are a lot of fun activities that you can do in sea view beach Karachi which include swimming, camel riding, horse riding, beach buggy, beach Sports, etc.

The sea view beach Karachi also has tons of facilities for the tourist including a sitting area, snack bars, street food vendors, public bathrooms, and parking space.

The next best place to visit in Karachi in this Karachi tourist guide is none other than sand spit beach.  Particularly known for its marine life the sandspit beach Karachi has a variety of marine life including crabs, Turtles are found here.

The sand spit beach is also the nesting ground of green olive ridley turtles. The nesting takes place in early winters and the wildlife department has taken radical steps for the safety of the Turtles.

If you’re visiting Sandspit beach then there are chances that you will get to see green Turtles. The beach is very quiet from October to March and this time is the best place to visit the sandpit beach. During the monsoons, the sandspit beach has a quite rough and harsh environment.

Before visiting the sent fit beach Karachi you must make sure that you book a hut before reaching the beach as it is among the famous tourist spots in Karachi and there is a  very little chance of you booking a hut at the spot.

Frere Hall is an exhibition space in a library in Karachi constructed in 1865. Frere Hall was originally intended to serve as Karachi Town Hall.  It is located in central Karachi’s colonial-era Saddar town and lies adjacent to the Sindh club.

The hall is named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere  who served as commissioner of Sindh and responsible for promoting economic development of the 19th century in Karachi.

Frere Hall is an illustration of the architectural development and concept of the British Empire; the design is inspired by the town halls built in  England in the 1860s.

The lieutenant colonel Wilson was given the task of construction of the Frere Hall.  The extensive use of yellow Karachi limestone, red and grey sandstones made the look of Frere Hall even more astonishing.

The hall is encircled by lawns originally known as Queen’s lawn and Kings lawn.  Later this name was changed to Bagh-e-Jinnah after independence in 1947.

If you love history and especially get to know the history of the subcontinent then Frere hall is among the top buildings built by the British Empire in the subcontinent. The building is not so huge but the design and location make it reflect the era of the previous century.

It is not only beautiful from the outside but also from the inside. The inner roof is fully finished with calligraphy.

Every tomb has a three portion structural design and what makes them different from other graveyards. The carving on these stones is so detailed and close to perfect.  The Tombs that were built 500 years ago are still in very good condition and you can still and feel the carvings on them. The carving is solid, beautiful, and reminds the carving capability of our ancestors.

That’s not it, every Tomb has a name written on it of the person who was buried whether female or male.  The carving is different for males and females. For males Daggers and swords were carved on the tomb and for females necklaces and jewelry which they used to wear carved on their tombs.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog best places to visit in karachi, historical places in karachi,

Mohatta Palace , one of the iconic Karachi visiting places , is a beautiful mansion in Karachi that you just have to visit! It used to be the home of a rich Hindu businessman, Shivratan Mohatta , but after India and Pakistan were split into two countries, he had to leave. Nowadays, it’s a museum showing Pakistan’s amazing art and traditions.

Walking through the grand doors of Mohatta Palace is like stepping back in time. Each room is filled with carefully preserved art pieces and objects from different periods and cultures in Pakistan . My personal favourite? The fine arts section , from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles, it’s a feast for the eyes and certainly makes it one of the best places to visit in Karachi .

The palace itself is a masterpiece with a mix of Rajasthani and British architecture and beautiful gardens that are perfect for a peaceful walk. 8. Boating to Manora Island

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog famous places in karachi, things to do in karachi

Manora Island, one of the places to visit in Karachi , a small peninsular land attached to a sandy beach, is a hidden gem in the Arabian Sea off the southern coast of Karachi .  This place is well-loved by explorers and locals from Karachi who want a peaceful break from the busy city.

Yet, the real charm lies in the journey itself , where you hop on a boat from Keemari port and sail towards Manora Island, which is one of the best things to do in Karachi. To take a boat ride around Manora Island, you must head to the Manora Ferry point at Kemari Port in Karachi. The boats there are usually available throughout the day , offering different tours around the island.

You can join a group tour or hire a private boat for an exclusive tour of the island, a popular choice among places to visit in Karachi with friends . The prices will vary depending on the tour length and the boat type. Before you hop onto a boat, agree on the tour’s price and duration with the boatman to avoid any misunderstandings later.

Settle in, kick back and enjoy the stunning view of the island and the surrounding Arabian Sea. It’s an unforgettable experience that gives you a whole new perspective on Manora Island.

Once you set foot on Manora Island, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do . Start by visiting the iconic Manora Lighthouse . Remember to wear comfortable shoes , because there are quite a few steps to climb to the top!

The Manora Fort is another must-visit historic site, with its ancient cannons and the remains of British colonial architecture, contributing to the island’s status as one of the best places to visit in Karachi .

Once you’re done enjoying the views, it’s time for some beach fun. The island’s long beach is great for a relaxed walk or a picnic . You can pick up seashells or just sit back and watch the waves. You can stay in one of the huts built in a row if needed.

Tips: pack plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks, especially if you’re visiting during the hot summer months. Also, remember that the beach can get quite crowded on weekends, so if you prefer a quieter experience, try to visit on a weekday.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog karachi visiting places, places to visit in karachi

In the Arabian Sea of Karachi, Charna Island feels like a secret paradise just waiting to be discovered. It’s one of the best things to do in Karachi if you’re into snorkelling and scuba diving.

The sea around the island is calm and inviting, which makes it the go-to spot for underwater adventures. And the reason behind these clear, beautiful waters is the island’s mountain that blocks wind and currents .

Getting there is a bit of a journey but worth it. You have to first get to this fishing area, a beach called Mubarak Village , about a couple of hours’ drive from Karachi. Then, you’re up for a gorgeous 30-minute boat ride to the island . Charna Island stands out amongst other famous Karachi places for its crystal-clear blue water , a sight not common, especially near Karachi. Once you’re there on the island, there are lots of fun things to do. If you like water sports, you can go snorkelling, scuba diving, cliff diving, or jet skiing. If you don’t like water activities, no problem! You can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool sea air, making it one of the best places to visit in Karachi to relax.

Just a little heads-up, be mindful of where you’re stepping. The island’s got some sharp rocks, and you wouldn’t want to hurt your feet. A pair of covered sandals should do the trick .

Now, if you want to get a taste of the local vibe, I’d recommend trying out the street food in Mubarak Village before or after your island trip. There’s also another beach called French Beach , another fancy beach and a great place to visit in Karachi , which is located near Mubarak Village. It’s usually less crowded than the city beaches , and the sea views are mind-blowing.

Once you get there, you’re going to be spoilt for choice. From thrilling rides to VR experiences , there’s a bit of everything. Some of my favourites are the 4D cinema and the indoor roller coaster.

There’s the ‘ Freak Out ‘ for the thrill-seekers, which swings you around with your legs dangling. If you’re into virtual fun, then ‘ Lazer Maze ‘ is right up your alley. You’ll have to navigate your way through a room filled with laser beams. They also have bumper cars and a carousel for good, old-fashioned fun, making Onederland a hit among the places to visit in Karachi with friends.

Apart from the rides, there’s a huge gaming zone with many arcade games . There’s also a soft play area for kids to run around and have a blast.

But the fun at Lucky One Mall doesn’t stop at Onederland. There’s a whole mall waiting to be explored! It’s a shopaholic’s dream, with many shops selling everything from clothes to electronics . The food court has a variety of restaurants, so you’re guaranteed to find something that tickles your taste buds. If you’ve got some energy left after all that, you can hit the bowling alley for a few games.

12. Take a Walk at Bin Qasim Park

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog places to visit in karachi with friends, karachi attractions

Bin Qasim Park, or as the locals sometimes call it, Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim , is a huge park next to Clifton Beach in Karachi, standing proudly among the famous places in Karachi . Whether you’re looking for things to do in Karachi or seeking peaceful Karachi visiting places , this park checks both boxes!

It’s easy to get to – just grab a rickshaw or use an Uber or Careem and ask for ‘Bin Qasim Park near Clifton.’

The park is big, with a l ong jogging track perfect for evening walks or morning jogs . This fact alone makes it one of the best places to visit in Karachi for fitness freaks. Throughout the park, you’ll also see stunning rose bushes, immaculate green lawns, towering plants, and intricately-designed fountains . If you need a break, you’ll find some lovely wood and marble benches to sit on, making it a good place to read a book or listen to music. If you’re with your family, there’s plenty of room for kids to run around and have fun. There are food courts serving a range of fast food options and shops where you can pick up a souvenir or two.

The park is open from 7 am until 9 pm , but it’s best to go earlier, especially around sunset . Just remember to keep an eye on your belongings while you’re there.

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a quiet moment, tie those shoelaces, grab your water bottle, and head on over!

13. Attend Karachi Literature Festival

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog karachi visiting places, places to visit in karachi

Imagine being in Karachi just as the city gears up for one of its most awaited events – the Karachi Literature Festival , or KLF, as locals fondly call it; it’s one of the highlights among Karachi’s famous places for literary enthusiasts.

Organized by the Oxford University Press Pakistan , this annual festival celebrates literature, promotes artistic expression, and showcases Pakistan’s diverse cultures and traditions. This makes it one of the top things to do in Karachi , even if you don’t understand Urdu.

While it’s true that some events, like the mushairas (poetry readings) and speeches, might be in Urdu, there’s also plenty of English content . Plus, there’s so much more to the KLF, like you’ll find book sales where you can pick up new reads at bargain prices and food stalls serving delicious meals. You get to enjoy a truly local experience, immersing yourself in Karachi’s vibrant culture and artistic scene, which makes it a must on the list of Karachi visiting places .

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog karachi tourist places, things to see in karachi

To get to the festival, keep an eye on the official event details, which provide specific dates each year. The festival is held at the Beach Luxury Hotel , an iconic Karachi spot, usually between February and March . It spans several days, and the festival is free and open to all, making it a must-visit if you find yourself in Karachi during this time .

Remember that it can get quite busy, so plan your day well. Prioritise the sessions you want to attend , and keep some time aside to explore the festival grounds, indulge in local food at the stalls, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

Karachi truly is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. From its vibrant street life and rich history to the hidden gems that offer a unique perspective of the city, there’s something here for every traveller. Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or just a genuine taste of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi won’t disappoint.

I hope this guide has led you to the best things to do in Karach i and helped you plan your visit to Karachi’s top attractions!

Why Visit Karachi?

Most travelers tend to skip Karachi on their trip to Pakistan in favor of places like Lahore, Islamabad , and the northern areas . However, there are endless reasons to add Karachi to your travel bucket list.

First of all, if you’re a beach-over-mountains person, Karachi is the place to go. Located right by the warm Arabian Sea, Karachi is your best bet to experience Pakistani beaches , since traveling along the Makran Coast of Balochistan remains very difficult for foreigners. Karachi is also an incredible place to catch a glimpse of the colorful Sindhi culture , which is excellent for people who don’t have time to travel across the interior of the province. Lastly, as Pakistan’s former capital city, Karachi is of great historical significance and must not be missed by anyone traveling in the footsteps of the Quaid-e-Azam (Father of the Nation).

Visiting Karachi is also an excellent idea when traveling to Pakistan in winter . When it gets uncomfortably cold in other parts of the country, Karachi allows for pleasantly warm days at the beach.

And, pro tip: flying into Karachi from abroad is the cheapest among all major airports in Pakistan , so why not take advantage of your layover by checking out some beautiful places to visit in Karachi?

Got your Karachi trip coming up? Here are the 12 most beautiful places to visit in Karachi that you mustn’t miss during your trip!

Clifton Beach

Beachgoers, camels, horses, and corn vendors crowding Clifton beach in the afternoon, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

As the perhaps most iconic beach in Pakistan, Clifton Beach sums up Karachi like no other place does. As soon as you step on the smooth sand, you’ll be greeted by colorfully decorated camels and men selling corn and other snacks directly by the water. Some may argue that Clifton Beach is too crowded and polluted, but there’s no doubt that this charming beach is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

The most popular activities at Clifton include horse rides, camel rides, and ATV drives. While certainly iconic, these activities are unfortunately ripe with scams. Therefore it’s imperative that before climbing on the camel, you agree on a price per round and define what a ’round’ even is. Refuse to go any further than you previously agreed on.

How to get to Clifton Beach: Take a Careem to the Mc Donald’s at Seaview. This is one of the most popular meeting spots in Karachi.

Mohatta Palace

Foreign girl in Sindhi dress posing in front of Mohatta Palace in Karachi.

Mohatta Palace is a grandiose sandstone mansion that was first constructed in 1927 and served as the residence of Hindu businessman Shivratan Mohatta until the partition of Pakistan and India. The mansion was then inhabited by Fatima Jinnah (sister of the Quaid-e-Azam) and later her sister. Nowadays, Mohatta Palace houses a small ethnographic museum showcasing the cultural diversity of Pakistan’s different ethnic groups with an emphasis on Sindhi culture. There’s also a museum shop where you can buy beautiful handcrafted souvenirs while supporting cultural preservation efforts.

Thanks to its impressive architecture and lush gardens, Mohatta Palace is not only an excellent place to learn about Pakistani cultures but also one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

How to get to Mohatta Palace: Call a Careem to the main gate of Mohatta Palace. You’ll have to pay an entrance fee and leave your belongings with the caretaker.

Frog perspective view of the Frere Hall in Karachi.

Few buildings represent Karachi better than the iconic Frere Hall. Named after Sir Henry Frere, a British colonial administrator who vouched for making Sindhi the official language of the province, this former town hall is now a library and exhibition space. While the building mostly reflects 19th-century colonial-style architecture, its ceilings were decorated by famous Pakistani artist Sadequain. This artistic heritage makes Frere Hall one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

How to get to Frere Hall: Call a Careem to Frere Hall or find a rickshaw from a nearby place. Thanks to its central location, Frere Hall is within walking distance from other main attractions.

Quaid-e-Azam House Museum

The Quaid-e-Azam house museum is the former residence of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his sister Fatima Jinnah and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Similar to Mohatta Palace, the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum is yet another beautiful colonial-era building that belonged to the Jinnah family at some point. It served as the Quaid-e-Azam’s residence from 1944 until his death in 1948, after which his sister Fatima Jinnah continued to reside in the building until 1964. The building now belongs to the Pakistani government and has been converted into a museum depicting the everyday life of the Quaid-e-Azam.

Apart from its architecture, the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum also has some refreshing gardens and historic cars, making it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

How to get to the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum: Call a Careem to the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum or find a rickshaw from a nearby place. Thanks to its central location, the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum is within walking distance from other main attractions.

Mazar-e-Quaid

Mazar-e-Quaid, the majestic mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Among all the places on the list, the Mazar-e-Quaid must be the most significant place for Pakistanis. It is the mausoleum where the Quaid-e-Azam lies to rest, alongside his sister and various other significant politicians. The complex consists of a spacious garden with a modernist-style mausoleum in the center. The white marble stone, out of which most structures are made, gives the Mazar-e-Quaid a bright and elegant glow in the otherwise colorful city of Karachi.

The most important thing to be aware of when visiting the Mazar-e-Quaid is respect. Keep in mind you’re visiting the tomb of the most important figure in Pakistan, so I advise you to dress and behave just as modestly as you would when visiting a mosque . However, it’s okay to take photos across the complex since the Mazar-e-Quaid is also one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

How to get to the Mazar-e-Quaid: Take a Careem to the entrance of the complex. You’ll have to pay a small entry fee and leave some of your belongings behind.

Three girls showing heart signs posing at the heart-shaped photo spot at TDF Ghar with the Mazar-e-Quaid in the background at night. TDF Ghar is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi at night.

Not far from the Mazar-e-Quaid lies a one-of-its-kind meeting spot called TDF Ghar (The Dawood Foundation House). This renovated 1930s house is a unique learning center, housing a museum, study rooms, and a hip cafe all at the same time. While you can catch a glimpse of the life of a 1930s Karachiite on the ground floor, you can find students lining the floors of the study rooms on the top floor and enjoy a meal in the courtyard cafe of the building. And if this wasn’t already cool enough, the top terrace offers an incredibly instagrammable photo spot with the Mazar-e-Quaid in the background , making it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

How to get to the TDF Ghar: Take a Careem to the TDF Ghar or walk from the Mazar-e-Quaid. You have to pay a small fee at the entrance and leave all edibles behind.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Patrick's Cathedral in Karachi, a significant church in Pakistan, seat of the archdiocese of Karachi, and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Chances are, you didn’t expect to find a church on a list of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi. However, as one of the centers of Christianity in Pakistan the St. Patrick’s Cathedral is definitely worth a visit for people of any creed. The gothic-style church was consecrated in 1881 and serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi. In front of the building, you can find a monument in honor of the Jesuit mission in Sindh.

Due to security concerns, the cathedral only welcomes visitors during mass times on Sunday mornings. But despite the restrictions, visitors of all faiths are welcome.

How to get to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral: Take a Careem or rickshaw to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Due to its proximity to major markets, rickshaws might be the preferred mode of transportation.

Zainab Market

Foreign girl in Sindhi dress admiring traditional crafts at a dreamy souvenir stall at Zainab Market in Karachi, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Zainab Market is one of the great markets of Karachi’s Saddar area and a must-visit shopping center for tourists in the city. As a market specializing in textiles and handicrafts, it’s the go-to place for anyone looking for traditional Sindhi clothes and souvenirs. And thanks to the beautiful traditional crafts that decorate the market halls, Zainab Market is also one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Unlike in many other cities around the world, Zainab Market isn’t your typical tourist trap. Vendors are generally honest and prices reasonable. However, as with any other market in Pakistan, haggling is a must, especially as a foreigner.

How to get to Zainab Market: The best way to get around the narrow and congested streets of the Saddar area is by rickshaw. You’ll find plenty of them lined up on the street. Other major attractions like the Frere Hall are also nearby.

Burns Road Food Street

Dried dates, sajji, and more being sold in Burns Road Food Street in the heart of Karachi.

If I had to choose one favorite place in Karachi, I’d definitely go for Burns Road. You may not discover the beauty of this chaotic market street at the first sight, but once your tongue touches one of the mindblowing street foods sold there, you’ll find out why Burns Road food street is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi. Come with an empty stomach, bring along a group of friends, and indulge in all the delicious Karachi specialties that are sold in Burns Road.

Check out my Burns Road vlog for a virtual tour of Karachi’s vibrant food scene!

Unfortunately, eating street foods is oftentimes a major transmission route for foodborne diseases. Therefore, I advise you to stay away from any foods involving water, ice, or raw ingredients if you have a weak stomach.

How to get to Burns Road: Due to the congestion of the road, going by rickshaw is the best way to get to Burns Road. Just tell your driver you want to go to Burns Road Food Street.

Sandspit Beach

Sandspit Beach in Karachi with turquoise waves on the left and camels on the right. Sandspit Beach is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Clifton Beach is awesome, but sometimes, we don’t want to be surrounded by loud crowds of tourists and vendors. We want to enjoy a relaxing day by the sea where we can just lie in the sand, have a nice picnic, and have fun in the sea without any worries. In that case, it’s worth taking the longer route to Sandspit Beach, a beautiful and quiet beach in Karachi. Together with similarly calm beaches, like Hawke’s Bay Beach and Turtle Beach, Sandspit Beach is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi if you simply want to get away from the noise of the city. Popular activities at Sandspit Beach involve horse rides, camel rides, and speed boat rides.

Although the area around Sandspit Beach is relatively safe and relaxed, the general rules still apply: dress modestly (a.k.a. no bikinis), be aware of scams, and never leave your belongings unattended. For an even more relaxed atmosphere, try booking a private beach resort in advance.

How to get to Sandspit Beach: Due to the remoteness of the beach, it’s best to hire a driver for the entire trip. Whether it’s someone you know personally or a Careem driver, negotiating a deal with the driver will not only save you money but also save you from potentially getting stranded since the area isn’t covered by Careem.

Dolmen Mall

View of the center of Dolmen Mall Karachi from the second floor.

Not far from Clifton Beach lies Dolmen Mall, an aesthetically designed medium-sized shopping mall, offering a variety of Pakistani and international clothing brands, gift shops, and more. While the selection of stores is rather basic and can be found at any other mall in Pakistan, it’s the ambiance that makes Dolmen Mall one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi. From its location by the sea to the beautiful flower-themed decorations covering the mall’s walls and ceilings, there are many small elements that make Dolmen Mall the perfect place to hang out alone or with friends.

If you’re in the mood for big shopping, I recommend a visit to Lucky One Mall instead. Located at the other end of town, Lucky One is the biggest mall in South Asia where you can likely find everything you’re looking for.

How to get to Dolmen Mall: Call a Careem. There are many entrances, so be aware of where to meet your driver on your way back.

View of the seaside restaurants of Do Darya at night, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi. Image by Dr. Dilwash Parmar.

Lastly, how could I compile a list of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi without mentioning Do Darya? Do Darya is home to a collection of sea view restaurants in Karachi’s DHA Phase 8 that besides offering great food have another specialty: they are built on terraces right into the sea! Of course, such amazing views will make your meal taste even better and create the perfect setting for a romantic date or a fun night out with friends in one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi.

Although the views are great at all times, the best time to dine at Do Darya is in the evening around sunset. Do keep in mind however that it isn’t recommended for women to visit Do Darya without a male companion in the dark.

How to get to Do Darya: Call a Careem to one of the Do Darya restaurants.

Things To Keep In Mind When Visiting Karachi

There’s no doubt you’ll find lots of beautiful places to visit in Karachi, however, it’s important to not get too distracted by the beauty and keep basic customs and safety tips in mind. Below are the major things to keep in mind:

Protect all your valuables when going out. Pickpocketing may not be as common in Karachi as in other parts of the world, but still a concern.

Be careful with the traffic. Karachi’s streets can get crazy busy and pose a risk to both pedestrians and drivers.

It’s not advised for female travelers to venture out alone in Karachi. Always stay in a group or even better, with a trusted male companion.

Be wary of those temptingly delicious street foods. If your stomach isn’t used to Pakistani hygiene standards, you’ll likely get sick at one point or another.

Lastly, avoid crowds since they can not only increase the risk of pickpocketing and sexual harassment but also the transmission of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.

I’m suprised how wide range of activities Karachi is offering. Adding it to my bucket list !

I have to be honest I had never ever thought of Pakistan as a place to visit. And the more I was reading about Karachi, the more I was seeing places that ticked my fancy – Clifton beach looks lush, Mazar-e-Quaid is stunning and then the market 😍 I love markets. I certainly would not be bored visiting here

Wow. Karachi looks so beautiful, adding to my to-visit list! Sandspit Beach sounds like my kind of beach 🙂

All of these spots look amazing to visit, and perfect for taking photos at as well.

Top 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Visit Karachi

IMG_4723

Karachi — the largest city in Pakistan and the fifth largest in the world — isn’t just about oppressive humidity and routine power outages. It’s also a city of beaches, ungodly amounts of biryani, chai addicts, and the never-ending wedding season. Why not find out why a visit to Karachi is a must for everyone, at least once.

The architecture, karachi’s buildings are a fabulous mix of old and new. tourists have the fascinating opportunity to explore mohatta palace — the magnificent building constructed in order to save a loving wife from dying before her time. the walls of the palace echo the sounds of love, life and loss. not to mention the frere hall — a free building that dates back to the same period, but which now acts as a museum and photography spot, holding fort to numerous art exhibitions all year round. sind club is another prestigious establishment, which was once the epicenter of british colonial society and is currently a private members’ club. saddar is the oldest part of the city, lined with houses, churches and bazaars that date back to the 18th century..

Endless Food Choices

When it comes to Desi food, the choices are endless. Karachi Burns Road , one of the oldest streets in the city, is a sacred trek for serious foodies. Burns is renowned for its traditional Nihari — a hot, spicy and delicious dish, full of rich flavours, usually accompanied with piping hot Naan and jugs of cold water for the faint-hearted! The street also specializes in delicious Biryani – a widely known rice dish with tender pieces of meat mixed together in a wide array of masalas.

Wedding Extravaganza

Let’s be honest — Karachiites love weddings. With what feels like a million functions for one couple tying the knot, it’s hard to miss the shaadi extravaganza during your visit to Karachi. Usually, the week-long fest involves henna-covered brides, food comas, sleep deprivation and dancing away into oblivion — sometimes even after the wedding is over.

Getting ready

Theatre has played an incredibly relevant role in Pakistan’s ever-growing media industry and, with emerging talent all across the nation, there are plenty of plays being held in various locations around Karachi. The Arts Council is the city’s leading cultural establishment, where you’ll find a plethora of thought-provoking dramas based on politics, culture, religion or just pure entertainment. Attending at least one is a definite must.

‘I’m going to the bazaar’ is probably the most common phrase heard in Pakistan’s most cosmopolitan city. Karachiites are passionate shoppers and several bazaars boast an incredible variety of products catering to everyone’s needs without breaking the bank. From getting your eyebrows done to bargaining over green chilies, the ever-crowded markets have everything readily available for the average buyer.

Cricket fever

This sport isn’t just ‘a game’ for Pakistanis; it’s a frenzy that grips the entire nation and unites it. The cricket season is perpetually ongoing and one way to enjoy it is to head over to a free screening where locals paint their faces in green and white, dress up in national colours, and chant ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ till their lungs give up. Doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of cricket or not – the festive atmosphere will be captivating enough, engaging you in the spirit of it all.

Halwapuri ka naashta

The most important aspect of a lazy Sunday for every Karachiite is a heart-attack inducing Halwapuri breakfast – a dish consisting of spicy chickpeas, rich potatoes in gravy sauce, a semolina sweet dish and crispy fried bread. Top on the to-do list for all tourists and locals alike — any visit to Karachi is incomplete without savoring the taste of this delicacy.

The taste of Karachi

Beaches and Bhuttas

Karachi’s weather is forever pleasant, and there are plenty of places to enjoy it, thanks to the beaches spread all over the city. But one thing that sets this city by the sea apart is the Bhuttas (corn on the cob) being sold on various carts along the coastline. The corn is usually smothered with lemon juice and a dash of Chaat Masala, ensuring you’re ready for a long stroll on the beach.

Karachi Eat Festival

Tourists planning their visit to Karachi from November to March not only get lucky with the weather, but also enjoy various happenings around the city. Karachi Eat Festival is one such event that takes place at the end of January each year. The idea is to create a food paradise for residents where top chefs and street vendors sell their best meals at a nominal price, leaving people to gobble, socialize and bump into long-lost relatives.

Crafters Expo

If you’re a die-hard fan of arts, crafts and all things handmade, head over to the Crafters Expo held in Karachi every December, where a bunch of artistic individuals get together to showcase their astonishing talent. Not only is it the biggest crafts event in Pakistan, it’s also overwhelmingly beautiful, with a seemingly endless variety of items that get sold in a flash.

Karachi Destination Guide

-->karachi holidays -->.

Though not frequently on the holiday itinerary for most Westerners, Karachi is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Pakistan. With 20 million residents, it has one of the largest city populations in the world. Primarily an economic hub for the country, Karachi is also considered the heart of Pakistan. Security is a factor to consider when travelling to this part of the world. Though it will be a culturally rich and educational experience, it is essential that travellers remain cautious and vigilant.

-->Top Attractions -->

Considered a diamond in the rough, among the hustle and bustle of Karachi is one of the most popular, serene and sacred sites in the city. The mausoleum Mazar-E-Quaid is an impressive monument and tribute to the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, also known as Quaid-e-Azam (Great Leader).

It is considered a mecca for all Pakistanis but also attracts many tourists. A large park surrounds the prominent structure, built with white marble and curved arches. Ceremonies are held here on Pakistan Day, Independence Day and the birth and death anniversaries of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his sister, whose tomb is also in the mausoleum.

Foreign dignitaries visiting Karachi often come to Mazar-E-Quaid to pay their respects. Tourists enjoy seeing the changing of the guard and visiting the adjacent museum.

Bohra Mosque, Karachi

-->Eat and Drink -->

Karachi cuisine (also known as Muhajir cusine) is largely the consequence of the city’s extensive Muhajir (Indian Muslim) population who migrated after Pakistan’s independence. This has resulted in a beautifully aromatic and spicy fusion of Indo-Arabic dishes, which are stronger in heat and flavour than other Pakistani dishes.

Common dishes on a Karachi dining table include vegetable and meat curry, dal, rice, kofta, kebab and naan bread. Lassi is a popular yoghurt drink in Pakistan that can be sweet or salty and enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Burns Road is renowned as the best place to savour the gastronomic delights Karachi has to offer.

-->Where to Stay -->

West Karachi is the ideal location to stay in as it is near the airport, the main shopping district and other facilities. One of the most popular accommodation choices is the Ramada Plaza Karachi Airport Hotel. If you were after an opulent stay a little further out, the exclusive South Karachi area has the Avari Towers Karachi in Saddar, which is considered a first-class option.

-->Shopping -->

In the centre of Karachi’s main shopping strip, Tariq Road, Dolmen Mall Clifton is considered the biggest, best and most popular shopping centre in the city. The six-level complex is secure and has more than 300 shops, many with designer and international brands, a supermarket and a food court with international food chains, as well as activities and entertainment for children. Expect to pay for quality here – it is well worth it!

Karachi like a Local

Politically turbulent times have discouraged many locals from exploring much of their own city. However, there are other buildings associated with the Great Leader that are as important as the Mazar-E-Quaid but are given little recognition and receive few visitors.

It is worth exploring these places, such as the Wazir Mansion in Saddar, where Mohammad Ali Jinnah lived as a child, and the Flagstaff House, where he also once lived. A visit to these historical landmarks enables a greater understanding of the connection between the Great Leader and the Pakistani people.

Pakistan travel guide

From the ancient Mughal city of Lahore to the snow-capped peaks of the Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan is a diverse nation defined not just by its natural beauty and architectural splendours, but by its friendly inhabitants, varied wildlife and rich culinary traditions.

Shame then, that political instability and sectarian violence has made large parts of the country a no-go for tourists, and prevented Pakistan from realising its potential as a top travel destination.

However, those daring enough to take a punt on Pakistan will be richly rewarded for their endeavours – particularly those with a penchant for the great outdoors. The North-West Frontier Province and Gilgit-Baltistan region are home to some of the world’s most famous mountain ranges, including Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush.

That explorers will have these sights more or less to themselves is another boon; gone are the well-marked routes and tea houses of India and Nepal, here lies real adventure.

From jaw-dropping mountain scenery to bustling conurbations, Pakistan’s vibrant cities each have their own distinct flavour. The super-sleek capital, Islamabad, is a modern metropolis bristling with contemporary architecture, world-class cultural attractions and some of the country’s finest restaurants.

Lahore is the very antithesis to Islamabad. Pakistan’s cultural capital, this ancient city abounds with UNESCO listed attractions, stunning shrines and ornate Mughal architecture. Its old town is a maze of bustling bazaars, which harbour mosques, museums and manicured gardens.

Karachi, the former capital and the economic powerhouse of the country, is a mega-city in every sense of the word, cramming 15 million or so into its boundaries. Meanwhile, Peshawar, in the North-West Frontier Province, remains a frontier town, sometimes dangerous and always intriguing.

Those seeking sun and seclusion, should explore Pakistan’s glorious coastline, which is home to some of the most pristine, crowd-free beaches in South Asia. While those looking to evoke the spirit a Kipling-style adventure should follow the ancient trade routes of the Khyber Pass, Grand Trunk Road and Karakoram Highway.

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Pakistan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Pakistan High Commission in London or nearest Pakistani consulate .

COVID-19 rules

Travel to pakistan .

There are no COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travellers entering Pakistan.

On 3 January, owing to a rising number of cases in some countries, the Government of Pakistan announced that 2% of passengers arriving on international flights will be randomly selected and tested for COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive will be advised to self-isolate for five days.

Leaving Pakistan

Do not travel to the airport if you have COVID-19 symptoms. You may be thermal scanned or asked to a take COVID-19 rapid antigen test. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you may be:

  • prevented from flying
  • asked to self-isolate for 5 days
  • referred to a medical facility

Public activities

There are no COVID-19 restrictions on public activities. Wearing a face mask in public is encouraged.

Testing positive for COVID-19 in Pakistan

Take a test if you have symptoms or if you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

If you test positive, you must self-isolate for 5 days. After that, you should then wear a face mask for 5 days.

Passport validity requirements

To avoid problems at immigration, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your visa application.

Contact Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet this requirement.

Visa requirements

You will need a visa to enter or travel through Pakistan. For information on how to apply, see the Government of Pakistan’s online visa information .

Visas for journalists often have extra travel restrictions. Follow the terms of your visa, or you could be fined or detained.

Returning to the UK

You must have a valid visa, a Pakistani national identity card or a valid Pakistani passport to leave.

If your visa has expired, you should apply for a visa extension or exit visa before attempting to travel. For information on how to apply, see the Government of Pakistan’s online visa information or contact the Ministry of Interior.

If you do not have evidence of Pakistani nationality, and you entered without a visa or your passport was not stamped on entry, you should contact the Ministry of Interior or visit a NADRA office.

Citizens of Pakistan overseas

If you hold a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) or Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) you can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for an unlimited period. For more information see the website of Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK .

Travelling with children

If you’re travelling with a child as a single parent or are not the child’s parent, you may need to provide documentary evidence of parental responsibility before leaving Pakistan. This is particularly likely if the child is of Pakistani origin.

Travelling through Pakistan

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) advises against travel to most of the Pakistan-Afghanistan and Pakistan-Iran border areas.  FCDO  advises against all travel to Afghanistan and Iran.

Illegal entry to Pakistan is a serious offence. If you enter without the correct documentation you may be detained or deported. If you enter Pakistan illegally, you may not be able to travel onward from Pakistan.

Pakistan-Afghanistan border

All borders with Afghanistan can close at short notice. There has been overcrowding and violence at open border crossings.

The Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan is open to people with valid passports and Pakistan visas. You can apply for a visa on the Ministry of Interior website .

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Pakistan guide .

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • proof of polio vaccination
  • a yellow fever vaccination certificate

Health screening (other than COVID-19)

Due to recent cases of mpox (monkeypox) in 2023 there may be enhanced screening and preventative measures when you enter Pakistan.

Read more about mpox on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Pakistan . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Alcohol and pork

Importing alcohol or pork products is illegal. You could be detained if you try to import them.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and regional risks advice .

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Pakistan

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Pakistan.

There is a high threat of terrorism and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan. Read our advice on regional risks in Pakistan for more information.

Terrorist groups operating in Pakistan include:

  • Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP)
  • Tehreek-e Jihad Pakistan (TJP)
  • Balochistan separatists
  • Islamic Sate Khorasan Province (ISKP)

Terrorist groups mainly target Government of Pakistan security forces. Areas of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, suffer regular terrorist attacks. However, terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without warning, including in popular destinations frequented by foreign nationals.

While terrorist attacks are mainly directed against the Pakistani state, attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without warning, including in places visited by foreigners, such as:

  • Pakistani government personnel and institutions
  • security and police force locations
  • political rallies, events and demonstrations
  • places of worship, including churches and religious sites, and religious processions
  • infrastructure projects
  • hotels, restaurants and shopping areas
  • courts and diplomatic premises
  • airports and public transport
  • schools and educational institutions
  • hiking trails
  • sports and live music events
  • densely populated and unsecured areas

Take particular care during periods of national or religious significance, including the month of Ramadan, and during election periods.

Advice for travellers

There may be increases in security force presence and restrictions on movement may be put in place at short notice. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities. You should:

  • keep a low profile
  • minimise your exposure to areas and events that post a higher risk
  • avoid large organised gatherings, such as public protests, religious gatherings and processions, and political rallies
  • vary your routes and timings if you make regular journeys
  • limit movements on Friday afternoons
  • avoid large crowds of people and public events
  • be prepared to change your plans as necessary

Terrorist kidnap

There is a threat of kidnap throughout Pakistan, particularly within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. However, terrorist groups are unlikely to prioritise the kidnap of Westerners in Pakistan. Any kidnap of a foreigner by terrorist groups in Pakistan would likely be opportunistic.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government policy is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Political situation

Nationwide elections were held on 8 February. Although campaigning has taken place, political rallies and demonstrations may take place across the country. Previous experience shows that these have the potential to turn violent and could lead to clashes with law enforcement authorities. During previous elections, terrorists have targeted security forces, political events, rallies, government buildings and polling stations.

You should:

  • avoid all political demonstrations, large crowds of people and public events
  • be prepared to change your plans as necessary
  • keep track of the local news

Public demonstrations are common. Protests can occur with little warning. Most are peaceful, but they can turn violent quickly.

Travelling around Pakistan

Pakistan authorities advise all foreigners (including diplomats) not to move out of their place of residence without proper security and co-ordination with the law enforcement agency. This is not rigorously enforced, but consider telling local authorities about any travel plans. There are a number of prohibited areas across the country. Officials could stop you and ask you to turn back.

When travelling in Pakistan, you or your travel company should contact the local authorities of your destination in advance to check the local security situation. They may arrange police protection. They will also tell you if you need a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistani Ministry of Interior.

Take safety precautions, keep a low profile and choose your accommodation carefully.

Protecting your belongings

Street crime is a risk. Take sensible measures to protect yourself and your belongings, particularly on public transport, in crowded areas and when travelling to and from the airport.

Be cautious when moving around urban areas at night, especially when on foot.

British nationals of Pakistani origin have been targeted by criminals, including kidnappers, as they are often perceived as being wealthier than locals.

There is an active black market in forged and stolen passports. Credit card fraud is common. Be aware of scams.

Lawlessness

Much of Balochistan, northern Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have a high level of lawlessness.

Laws and cultural differences

Pakistan is a Muslim country. Respect the local traditions, customs and laws. Make sure your actions do not cause offence.

Standards of public behaviour differ between the UK and Pakistan. Behaviour that might be acceptable in the UK can cause offence in Pakistan. Being considerate of others is important in Pakistani culture. Loud or rowdy behaviour in public is likely to attract a negative response.

Personal ID

You may be asked to show photo ID. You are advised to carry some form of photo ID at all times.

Ramadan, also called Ramazan in Pakistan, is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. During this time, do not:

  • eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
  • play loud music or dance
  • swear in public

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts.

You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that fasting can cause tiredness
  • be aware that driving may be unpredictable, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk
  • be patient and show tolerance

Dress modestly. Men and women should cover their shoulders and legs in public. Women should cover their heads when entering mosques and holy places, and in rural areas.

Insulting or showing disrespect or contempt of religion, religious beliefs or anything considered sacred (blasphemy) is illegal. Blasphemy has a broad definition in Pakistani law. It includes public and private comments in any form, including on social media.

There are significant criminal penalties, including the death penalty. Those accused of blasphemy are at significant risk of violence from the public. Both Muslims and religious minorities have been victims of blasphemy accusations and violence, including killings.

Be sensitive to religious beliefs and behave appropriately.

Death penalty

The death penalty is used for crimes including blasphemy, murder, rape and drug trafficking.

Alcohol laws and bans

Drinking alcohol is illegal for Muslims. Non-Muslims are allowed to drink in Pakistan, but you must get a licence from the authorities. It is also illegal for non-Muslims to supply alcohol to Muslims. Public drinking and drunkenness are illegal and can lead to detention.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

You can be imprisoned for possession of even small quantities of illegal drugs. British nationals have been arrested on drug trafficking charges and have been detained for long periods while their case is in the Pakistan legal system. The death penalty can be used for drug trafficking.

Photography

Do not take photographs at military establishments, airports or any infrastructure (including bridges and dams) or from aircraft. British nationals have been arrested on suspicion of ‘spying’. Check with officials if you’re not sure whether you can take a photo.

You should not take photos of people without seeking prior permission.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex relationships are illegal . Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Relationships

It is illegal for unmarried couples to live together.

Dual nationals

If you or your parents were born in Pakistan, you might be considered a Pakistani national by the local authorities even if you do not hold a Pakistani passport. In this case, the British government may not be able to provide full consular assistance if you need it.

The National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) are issued to citizens of Pakistan who are not resident in Pakistan. If you hold either, you will be recognised as a citizen of Pakistan.

If you are a dual British and Pakistani national living or travelling in the country of your other nationality, we would not normally support you or get involved in dealings between you and that country’s authorities. Read more about  who the  FCDO  can support abroad , including information for dual nationals.

Transport risks

Road travel  .

If you are planning to drive in Pakistan, see information on driving abroad .

You need either a 1968 international driving permit ( IDP )  or a UK driving licence to drive in Pakistan. The 1926 IDP is not accepted any more. You cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so get one before you travel.

Road safety

Outside of the major motorways, the quality of roads is variable. Road conditions can be poor and there is a risk of carjacking. Local driving standards are erratic, especially at night. Take care on long road journeys and when travelling cross-country.

The north of Pakistan is mountainous. Many roads, including the N15 highway between Chilas and Babusar in Gilgit Baltistan, are inaccessible at some times of the year due to extreme weather conditions. Many roads in these remote areas are of very poor quality with uneven surfaces. Landslides frequently block or destroy roads. Use experienced local drivers when travelling these routes and only in clear weather conditions.

Avoid using street or e-taxis. Only use taxis from reputable, licensed companies where you call for a taxi and the operator contacts a taxi driver.

Public transport

Due to the level of crime, avoid using public transport, including the Metro Bus between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Air travel

The UK Air Safety List (ASL) lists all known airlines in Pakistan that do not meet international safety standards and are banned from operating commercial air services to, from, and within the UK. Check the UK Air Safety List when considering which airlines to fly with. The list is maintained by the Department for Transport, based on advice from the UK Civil Aviation Authority .

Flights to and from the mountainous areas in the north of Pakistan are frequently delayed or cancelled due to extreme weather.

Rail travel

Avoid using the railway network due to the risk of terrorist attacks and derailments.

Sea travel

The threat from piracy within Pakistan’s territorial waters is low. There is a significant threat of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and other parts of the Indian Ocean. Mariners should follow shipping industry guidelines on precautions to take.

Extreme weather and natural disasters

Monitor local and international weather updates from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and see weather advisories from the National Disaster Management Authority .

The monsoon season in Pakistan is from late June to early October. Heavy rains can cause severe flooding, particularly in Sindh and Punjab provinces.

Landslides

Check local forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and be aware of the risk of landslides and road blockages, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions. Take extreme care crossing swollen rivers.

Pakistan recently experienced flooding and landslides. Roads and bridges have been damaged or destroyed, affecting travel in many parts of the country. More information is available from the National Disaster Management Authority .

Earthquakes

Earth tremors are common. Read advice on what to do before, during and after an earthquake from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This section has safety advice for regions of Pakistan. It only covers regions where The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

FCDO advises against all travel to these districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province:

  • Dera Ismail Khan
  • Lakki Marwat
  • Peshawar, including the city of Peshawar
  • Upper South Waziristan
  • Lower South Waziristan

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to:

  • Arandu town
  • the road between Mirkhani and Arandu

FCDO  advises against all travel to much of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province because of military or militant activity in many of the districts. There is frequent militant violence in the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Local curfews could be imposed at short notice. There can be cross-border attacks in the surrounding areas of Arandu to the south and west of Chitral.

N45 Highway between Mardan and Chitral

FCDO advises against all travel on the N45 Highway, from the north of the Mardan ring road, to the edge of the city of Chitral because of terrorism incidents.

FCDO advises against all travel to Balochistan Province, except the southern coast of Balochistan.

The situation at the Pakistan-Iran border can be extremely tense. In January both Iran and Pakistan conducted missile and drone strikes targeting militant groups on either side of the border.

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the southern coast of Balochistan. That is:

  • the area south of (and including) the N10 motorway
  • the section of the N25 from the N10/N25 intersection to the Balochistan-Sindh border, including the port city of Gwadar

There is a high risk from kidnapping and militant activity in much of Balochistan. If you plan to visit the southern coast of Balochistan, get permission from the authorities and have security arrangements in place.

Pakistan-administered Kashmir

FCDO advises against all travel to within 10 miles of the India-Pakistan border area within Pakistan-administered Kashmir, known as the Line of Control.

There is regular military activity on the Line of Control. Although there is a ceasefire in place, there are significant tensions between India and Pakistan. There is a serious risk of small arms fire and occasional mortar fire.

Make sure you have the necessary permissions to travel. Check the latest requirements before you travel as they can change.

Sindh province

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to all areas of Sindh province north of and including the city of Nawabshah.

There are high levels of lawlessness in the north of Sindh province. There is a very high risk of crime and kidnapping. Criminal gangs and bandits with access to heavy weaponry are active in the area. In 2022, a large criminal gang attacked police in Ghotki, northern Sindh, killing several officers and taking other officers hostage.

Gilgit-Baltistan region

Flight schedules schedules to Gilgit and Skardu Airports in the North of Pakistan may be unreliable and may change at short notice. You should consult your airline or travel agent.

Road routes are also likely to be restricted by seasonal weather, with the Babusar Pass liable to close due to snowfall.

The terrain in Gilgit-Baltistan is mountainous, with remote and isolated locations that are difficult to police. You are strongly advised to get local security advice and make appropriate personal security arrangements before you visit.

All foreign nationals must register with the local authorities when visiting Gilgit-Baltistan. You might need a permit for mountaineering or trekking, in particular for mountains over 6,000 metres. The permission process can take up to 2 months and is best organised through a travel company. The validity of your travel insurance policy may be affected if you do not have the correct permits.

Use reputable trekking agencies, stay on established routes, and always walk in groups. Do not trek alone.

Karakoram Highway (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan)

The Karakoram Highway runs from Hasan Abdal in north Punjab towards Gilgit and the Chinese border. FCDO advises against all travel on the Highway between Mansehra and Chilas via Battagram, Besham City, Dasu and Sazin up to the junction with the N15.

Avoid travelling on the Highway at night, as the road can be narrow with steep drops. All sections of the Highway north of Battagram up to the Chinese border have experienced landslides.

Police and security agencies have a significant presence in Islamabad. Exercise caution in the outlying districts, such as I-8, I-9, I-10 and areas further west, where security forces have led operations against suspected criminals and terrorists.

Avoid all protests. Crowded areas such as the Red Mosque (Lal Masjid) and Aabpara Market in G-6 have been a focal point for protests.

Levels of violence can vary but there has been a recent increase in armed robbery. The safety of daily activity can be unpredictable. Criminal and political violence is common, including armed carjacking, robbery, kidnap and murder. Strikes called by religious and political parties can cause significant disruption and sometimes lead to violent civil unrest. Smaller-scale labour strikes are also common and cause regular disruptions locally.

There is a risk of violence in parts of the city which include government offices. Major hotels and the financial district are generally seen as more stable, though there remains a risk of violence, particularly after Friday prayers.

  • plan any travel in the city carefully
  • take advice from hosts or trusted contacts, follow instructions from law enforcement officers and be prepared to cancel or cut back your plans
  • be especially vigilant in Lyari, Malir, Quaidabad and Orangi Town – they have a greater risk of violence based on past activity

There’s a high threat of terrorism throughout Pakistan, including Karachi. Attacks in Karachi have included:

  • February 2023 – militants attacked a police station in the city killing police officers
  • 2022 – a suicide bomb at the University of Karachi targeted Chinese nationals and killed 4 people
  • public service and health officials have been attacked while working on health programmes

Lahore is the capital of Punjab and attracts large numbers of tourists and business travellers. While the city has a widespread police presence, there have been recent terrorist attacks. These have targeted public places and government or security forces. Avoid religious events or gatherings, public events and large crowds of people.

If you travel to southern Punjab take advice about the local security situation in advance. There is a high level of crime and public order incidents.

Border areas

Except for official border crossing points, foreigners are not allowed to travel within certain distances of Pakistan’s international borders. This includes:

  • travel to within 5 miles of Pakistan’s border with India and within 10 miles of the Line of Control
  • 10 miles of the border with China
  • 10 miles of the border with Afghanistan

If you travel to these areas you may be arrested and detained.

The situation for border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan may change rapidly due to the security situation in Afghanistan. The FCDO advises against all travel to Afghanistan or within 10 miles of the Afghan border as well as Pakistan’s Balochistan Province and a number of districts in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 1122 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company promptly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccinations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip check:

  • the latest information on vaccinations and health risks in TravelHealthPro’s Pakistan guide
  • where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

Polio vaccination programme

Pakistan is rolling out a widespread Polio vaccination programme in an effort to eradicate Polio. You should provide proof of Polio vaccination if asked by a vaccination team. Any exemption due to a medical condition needs to be supported by a medical certificate issued by recognised health authority

Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Bottled water

Take care when buying bottled water and follow advice on TravelHealthPro . A recent Pakistan government report on bottled water found that a number of bottled water brands were contaminated.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Medical supplies may be difficult to find in Pakistan due to restrictions on imported goods.

Healthcare facilities in Pakistan

FCDO has a list of English-speaking doctors in Pakistan .

The standard of local medical facilities is lower than in the UK, especially in remote areas. Private medical care is expensive but available in all major cities. Specialised treatment for psychiatric illnesses may not be available outside major cities.

COVID-19 healthcare in Pakistan

Contact the COVID-19 helpline on 1166 if you have symptoms.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .
