Here are some advantages of using eSIMs as a wonderful alternative for tourists in Singapore:

  • Convenience : Using eSIMs eliminates the need to physically insert a SIM card into your device or worry about misplacing it, as the eSIM can be remotely activated, resulting in a more convenient experience.

This flexibility is particularly useful for tourists needing to change their carrier or plan based on their needs or location.
  • Coverage: By allowing access to multiple networks and carriers, eSIMs offer improved coverage and connectivity in regions where signals are weak.
  • Eco-friendliness : eSIMs are a more eco-friendly option as they eliminate the need for physical SIM cards, a source of e-waste.

To buy Singtel Singapore eSIM, you can refer to SingeSIM.com . They offer various data plans that will easily fit with your trip plan.

Singtel 5G eSIM mobile data plans for tourists and visitors in Singapore

Launched on 11 September 2023, Singtel now has fully digital tourist eSIM mobile data plans with 5G , priced at S$12 (approx. US$8), S$30 (approx. US$22) and S$50 (approx. US$37).

Some key perks about these tourist plans include local call minutes, local SMSes, and international calls, on top of extra data roaming to neighbouring countries. You can still get essential alerts or text messages on your mobile phone, or rely on local services that require calls and SMSes for booking and reservations. Similarly, you can do a quick jaunt to nearby Southeast Asian countries and not need another tourist plan.

More details about Singtel’s 5G Tourist eSIM plans are below. Note that the S$12 plan only comes with 4G network coverage, which can be cost-effective if you still do not have a 5G-enabled smartphone.

To grab the Singtel Tourist eSIM, you can find them on Singtel’s official website here . The entire process can be done online, from ordering the eSIM to installing it on your mobile phone before arrival.

As an introductory offer, customers of the new plan offering by Singtel get a complimentary S$5 KKday voucher with every purchase of these new eSIMs.

"We continue to see healthy demand for our Tourists SIMs. With the Grand Prix roaring into the Lion City this week, we’ve further enhanced our offerings to give inbound travellers even more convenience and value during their stay in Singapore and our neighbouring countries, with our hassle-free, fully digital 5G Tourist eSIM offerings. Beyond connectivity, we’re also enhancing the travel experience for tourists so that they can enjoy other digital experiences from making video calls, augmented or virtual reality experiences and more with 5G - bringing greater fun to the holidays," said Diana Chen, Managing Director, Customer Value, Singtel.

Is Singtel’s 5G network good for tourists?

Singtel 5G tourist eSIM plans.

Regardless of your telco choice, you are adequately covered with mobile connectivity if you are visiting highly urbanised parts of Singapore. Some areas may experience faster or slower speeds, partly due to their concentration of people and the time of day.

Certain tourist hot spots may have shops or eateries with poor network coverage, owing to their network obstructions (like walls) or if they are sited below ground level . Conversely, underground public transport is well connected (both in getting around and getting mobile data ). This cuts across all telco operators in Singapore.

Opensignal, an independent mobile network analytics firm, ranked Singapore among the top places in the world for 5G Network Coverage Experience (along with places like South Korea and the USA). Singtel, in particular, achieved 95% 5G network coverage across the city-state three years ahead of its initial 2025 regulatory target.

Singtel is one of the major mobile network operators in Singapore, along with rivals like StarHub and M1 which also carry mobile data plans for tourists.

The Expat/Tourist’s Guide to Getting a Prepaid SIM Card in Singapore

jeffcuellar

Whether you’re here in Singapore for business or leisure, prepaid data SIM cards are good to have. It helps you keep in communication with friends, family, co-workers and prospective employers (if you’re here looking for work).

There are 3 major telcos in Singapore: Singtel, M1 and Starhub. Depending on how long you’re staying in Singapore, you can choose a prepaid SIM card with a longer validity (up to 180 days) or a tourist SIM card that’s just valid for a week.

Tourist SIM cards: Ideal for short stays

If you’re staying only for 7 to 12 days, tourist SIM cards offer the most bang for buck. Currently all three telcos offer 100GB tourist SIM cards.

Go for Starhub Travel Prepaid SIM if you only want to buy a prepaid card as it is the cheapest and gives more value. Starhub and M1’s tourist SIM cards are the same price at $12, but Starhub offers more minutes of international calls and additionally, 1 GB of roaming data.

But, if you don’t already have an EZ-link card and will need to take public transport when in Singapore, you should go for the Singtel hi!Tourist EZ-Link SIM Card , because the SIM can also be used as an EZ-link card and has a stored value of $3.

If you buy an EZ-link card separately at the MRT station, it costs $12, with $5 being the card cost and $7 being the stored value. By getting the Singtel hi!Tourist EZ-Link SIM Card, you save on money and time spent in another queue to get an EZ-link card. You also get a free round trip on the cable car to Sentosa and 20% off Sentosa attractions. See all the benefits tied to the Singtel hi!Tourist EZ-Link SIM Card .

7-day tourist SIM cards in Singapore

*Inclusive of $3 train or bus EZ-link stored value.

10 or 12-day tourist sim cards in Singapore

If you will be staying for around 12 days, you should get the Singtel hi!Tourist SIM Card, which comes with 100GB local data and 3GB roaming data. It gives slightly more value than the M1 Prepaid Tourist SIM at $30 for 12 days, as it has 90 mins of international calls as compared to M1’s 50 mins.

Prepaid SIM cards in Singapore for voice calls, SMSes and data

If you will be staying for 90 days in Singapore with not much obligation to keep in touch with anyone, you can consider getting the most basic M1 M Card Prepaid SIM for only $5 .

If you are here searching for work and need a prepaid card that can last a bit longer, the $15 and $50 prepaid SIM cards have a validity of 180 days.

Aside from Starhub’s Happy Prepaid SIM , which charges a flat rate of 22 cents for the first minute of a local call and 8 cents per minute thereafter, M1’s M Card and Singtel hi! SIM cards  both charge different rates depending on the time of the call.

All three telcos charge 5 cents for one local SMS and 15 cents for one global SMS.

Another consideration you may have is IDD calls and data roaming. All three prepaid SIM cards bundle some roaming data for roaming in nearby countries.

Prepaid SIM cards in Singapore for data

Given that almost everything can be done online nowadays, you might find that data SIM cards are more suitable for you.

Starhub offers a data value-added service for your StarHub Happy Prepaid SIM. The  WOW Prepaid Data Plan  offers anything from 1 GB (3 days) for $5 or 4 GB (30 days) for $25. In addition, within the validity period, you can enjoy unlimited data for messaging apps like WeChat or LINE for $0.40 per day or $6 per month.

Singtel is offering Value+ Data Plans for as cheap as $10 for 1.5 GB (7 days), with unlimited data for music and social messaging apps.

Will a Singapore SIM Card work on your foreign phone?

Phones in Singapore run on a GSM 900 and 1800 frequency bands. So if you’re coming from a European or Asian country, a Singapore SIM card will usually work, but it’s a good idea to check your phone’s specifications to see if it runs on Singapore’s GSM frequency band. You can get that information from your phone service provider or phone’s manual.

6208773895_1555a222a6

But if you’re from the United States, Canada, or other Western Hemisphere nation, things can get a bit… complicated. That’s because many phone companies either use CDMA technology ( especially US telcos like Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, etc.) or have different GSM frequency bands altogether (800, 850, 1850, 1900, etc.).

If you own a phone that’s “locked” by your phone service provider or runs on a different GSM frequency, you’re left with three options:

  • Jailbreak and unlock your phone (if you’re ok with voiding the warranty and other technical risks).
  • Purchase a “world edition” phone with a SIM card slot that can be unlocked (some phones are CDMA/GSM dual use).
  • Purchase a local GSM phone.

How to t op up your Singapore SIM card

Depending on how long you intend to stay, you’ll probably need to top up your SIM card at some point. There’s three ways to top up:

  • Top up online through the dedicated top-up pages or prepaid mobile apps for Singtel , StarHub , and M1 .
  • Top up electronically by using a NETS Self-Service station , Singapore Post SAM kiosk , ATMs (DBS, POSB, OCBC), or AXS stations .
  • Top up by walking into a grocery store, gas station or phone store. You can either have the cashier “top up” your phone for you, or you can just take the card and DIY.

And if you’re staying in Singapore to get a job, once you land one, you can opt for a monthly phone plan. Currently, SIM Only Plans are all the rage. Read our latest comparison piece here:  Singtel GOMO vs StarHub giga vs M1 & Other SIM-Only Data Plans in Singapore .

What to Consider when Choosing a Travel SIM card

Each of the leading Singapore telcos offers a variety of prepaid sim cards that cater specifically to tourists. These SIM cards include data, text messages and local and international call minutes.

Some also offer international roaming in certain neighbouring countries, which can be useful if you are heading on elsewhere after Singapore.

When comparing SIM cards, consider the following factors:

  • Data allowance : Make sure the plan provides enough data for your needs . Consider what you will use it for – some social media apps such as Instagram and YouTube can eat through a lot of data quickly. Opting for a package with a large data bundle will help avoid inconvenient mid-trip top-ups.
  • Coverage : Ensure the SIM card offers strong coverage in the areas you plan to visit. The major Singapore SIM card providers generally offer good coverage, but it’s always wise to double-check.
  • Roaming options : Some Singapore SIMs offer international roaming , which is handy if you plan to head elsewhere after Singapore. Or you want to use up unused data when you get home. Different providers offer different options with regard to the different countries available and the quantity of data allowance.
  • Validity period : Choose a SIM with a suitable expiry date to match your trip length. Keep in mind that some tourist SIM cards have shorter validity periods.
  • Price : Compare the costs of different SIM cards to find one that fits your budget . Be sure not to sacrifice essential features for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Who are Singapore’s Leading Mobile Operators?

All of these telcos offer great options for tourist SIM cards in Singapore.

Bear in mind that the available frequencies in Singapore for mobile communication are 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz, which means your phone should be compatible with these to take full advantage of the mobile internet services provided by Singaporean operators.

About eSIM

Another trend to watch for is eSIMs. As eSIM technology grows in popularity, more devices and plans now support it, providing another way to access data without needing a physical SIM card .

Instead of using a traditional SIM card, eSIM allows you to activate your eSIM data plan via email and use it immediately. This is a convenient option as it lets you switch between carriers seamlessly without needing to swap out a physical SIM card.

However, it is worth noting that a physical SIM card that you insert into your device often offers better data allowances and lower costs.

Also check that the eSIM offers local and/or international calls if this is important to you, as they are often data only. You also need to ensure your mobile device is eSIM compatible.

In summary:

  • eSIMs allow you to activate your data plan via email
  • You don’t need a physical SIM card
  • Physical SIM cards often offer better value packages that eSIMs
  • Some travel eSIMs are data only, without call allowances
  • You need to ensure your mobile device is eSIM compatible

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Singapore

You can easily find SIM cards at the airport, various convenience stores like 7-Eleven, and in shopping malls around the city.

We recommend buying one online, and then you can collect it upon arrival at Changi Airport.

Required Documents to Buy a SIM Card

To buy a SIM card as a tourist, you’ll need to present your passport  as proof of your identity. It’s a mandatory requirement for purchasing a SIM card in Singapore.

Your passport helps the retailer verify your identity and ensures that only genuine tourists access the tourist SIM card options.

How Do Singapore SIM Cards Work?

When you purchase a Singapore prepaid SIM card, the first thing you need to do is activate it by inserting the card into your phone. This process is straightforward; just follow the instructions provided in the sim card packet, or ask the store staff for assistance.

Once you’ve done this, you can immediately start using the preloaded credit to make calls, send texts, and use mobile data.

Important tip : Make sure that your smartphone is  unlocked  for you to use the available local SIM cards in Singapore. Locked phones are restricted to one network provider, making it impossible to switch to other carriers while in the country.

If your smartphone is locked, contact your carrier to unlock it before heading to Singapore.

How to Top-Up Your SIM Card

Once you have your SIM card, topping up your credit is a breeze. You can find top-up cards of various denominations at 7-Eleven stores, the service provider’s stores, and even newsstands.

These cards usually have a hidden number and PIN, which can be revealed by scratching off the protective coating.

To top-up your SIM, follow the instructions provided on the top-up card. These instructions include straightforward steps to input the card number and PIN.

In addition to physical top-up cards, you can also use online top-up services or apps provided by SIM card providers. Online top-ups often make it easy to track your balance and monitor your usage throughout your stay in Singapore.

To do this, simply visit your provider’s website, create an account or log in, and follow the guided prompts to add your desired top-up amount.

Apps for SIM Management

When you get a tourist SIM card in Singapore, you can also download apps for managing your SIM.

These apps make it easier for you:

  • Check your account balance
  • View remaining data, talk time and SMS
  • Top-up or purchase data bundles easily

For example, if you choose the M1 Prepaid Tourist SIM, you can download the  M1 Prepaid App from the Google Play or Apple App Store.

Likewise, if you opt for a Singtel Prepaid SIM card, you can manage your account with the  Singtel Prepaid hi!App and Starhub has the Starhub Prepaid App.

Prepaid vs Postpaid SIM cards

Prepaid SIM cards  are a popular choice for tourists because they offer flexibility and convenience. With a prepaid SIM card, you have complete control over your expenditure, as you only pay for what you use in advance.

Additionally, you can easily top up your account when needed. This option eliminates the worry of unexpected charges and can conveniently be purchased upon your arrival in Singapore.

On the other hand,  postpaid SIM cards  are usually more suitable for longer stays or for residents. With a postpaid plan, you receive a monthly bill for the services you have used, and these plans often come with contract commitments. This option may be advantageous in terms of more cost-effective data and voice packages, but it also comes with the responsibility of managing and paying monthly bills.

In general, tourists tend to prefer  prepaid SIM cards  as they provide simplicity and freedom from contracts. They allow you to stay connected without being tied down to monthly fees, and it is easy to find  prepaid plans  offering attractive call, data, and messaging packages.

Is Pocket Wi-Fi a good option for Singapore?

While Singapore offers numerous SIM cards for tourists, you might be interested in additional options like a pocket Wi-Fi.

A pocket Wi-Fi is a portable device allowing you to stay connected to the internet without using a local SIM card . They are especially useful when travelling with a group or as a family, as multiple devices can connect to the same pocket Wi-Fi, without purchasing multiple plans.

However, they don’t allow you to make local or international calls.

For a Pocket WiFi, you usually pre-pay online and it will be delivered to your accommodation. You will need to post it back at the end of your trip.

Click here to read more about Pocket WiFis and order one online.

Useful Apps for Singapore

Once you’ve chosen your SIM card, it’s time to download some useful apps for navigating Singapore . Just remember to track your data usage to avoid running out!

The city has an excellent public transport system, and using apps like MyTransport.SG or CityMapper can make getting around much more manageable.

Other navigation apps worth downloading are Grab and Gojek , which provide taxi and ride-hailing services similar to Uber.

Singapore is also known for its diverse food scene. Use apps like Chope or Burpple to locate restaurants and cafes in your vicinity. They offer reviews, ratings, and even discounts for specific eateries, helping you choose the perfect spot for your taste buds.

3 Pros of Using Singapore SIM Cards

3 Pros of Using Singapore SIM Cards

Using a Singapore SIM card while in Singapore can offer several advantages, especially for travelers or new residents. Here are three pros of using a Singapore SIM card:

1. Local Rates for Calls and Data

One of the primary benefits of using a Singapore SIM card is the access to local call and data rates. Switching to a local SIM can save you a significant amount of money on calls, texts, and mobile data. Singaporean mobile service providers offer a variety of plans, which can be much more cost-effective than international roaming plans.

2. High-Speed Connectivity

Using a Singapore SIM card, you'll be able to take advantage of the country's fast and reliable 4G LTE networks, and possibly even 5G where available. This ensures that you can stay connected with ease, whether it's for navigating with maps, streaming videos, making video calls, or managing business tasks while on the go.

3. Convenience and Accessibility

Getting a Singapore SIM card is relatively easy and straightforward. SIM cards can be purchased at Changi Airport, mobile carrier stores, convenience stores, and even vending machines. This means you can start using your phone as soon as you arrive in the country.

3 Cons of Using Singapore SIM Cards

3 Cons of Using Singapore SIM Cards

1. High Costs

Singapore SIM cards can be quite expensive, especially for tourists or short-term visitors. The cost of data plans and calling minutes can add up quickly, especially if you are using your phone frequently for navigation, social media, or to stay in touch with people back home.

2. Limited Validity

Some Singapore SIM cards have a limited validity period. This means that if you do not use all of your data or minutes within a certain time frame, they will expire and you will need to purchase more. This can be inconvenient and costly, especially if you are staying in Singapore for an extended period of time.

3. Compatibility Issues

Not all phones are compatible with Singapore SIM cards. If your phone is locked to a specific network, you may not be able to use a Singapore SIM card in it. Additionally, some phones may not support the frequency bands used in Singapore, which can cause connectivity issues.

3 Tips for how to Choose Singapore SIM Cards

3 Tips for how to Choose Singapore SIM Cards

1. Consider Your Usage

Different SIM cards offer different plans that cater to different needs. Some offer unlimited data, while others may provide a certain amount of free local and international calls. Consider your needs - whether you need more data, more call time, or a balance of both.

2. Check the Coverage

Not all SIM cards offer the same level of coverage. Some might have better reception in certain areas compared to others. Make sure to choose a SIM card from a provider that offers good coverage in the areas you'll be frequenting.

3. Compare Prices

Prices can vary significantly between different providers and plans. Make sure to compare prices and what's included in the plan before making a decision. Also, check if there are any hidden charges or fees. Some providers might offer cheaper plans but charge extra for certain services.

Ensure that your phone is unlocked and compatible with Singapore's GSM network. Singapore uses GSM 900 and 1800 frequencies for 2G, WCDMA 2100 for 3G, and Bands 1, 3, 7, 8 for 4G/LTE. If your phone is locked to a carrier from your home country, it may not work with a Singaporean SIM card. Contact your current provider to unlock your phone if necessary.

2. Identification Requirements

Singapore has strict regulations for purchasing and registering SIM cards. You will need to provide a valid form of identification, such as a passport or an identity card, to purchase a SIM card. This is part of the regulatory requirements to prevent anonymous communication for security reasons. Make sure you have your ID with you when you go to buy a SIM card.

3. Plan Options and Coverage

Research the different mobile operators and plan options available in Singapore. The major telecom providers are Singtel, StarHub, and M1, and they offer a variety of prepaid and postpaid plans. Consider how much data, local calls, and international calls you will need during your stay.
