Blessed with some of the Aegean’s most exquisite sandy white beaches, backed by rippling hills carpeted in scented pines and olive trees, Skiathos is the most developed of the Sporades. The beautiful beach-fringed south coast is filled with walled-in holiday villas, hotels and apartments, and from June to September, when the island fills up with sun-seeking Greeks and northern Europeans, prices soar and rooms dwindle. Seek out Skiathos' elegant monasteries, hidden-away churches and hillside hiking paths, however, and you'll still catch a glimpse of its soul.

Exploring Skiathos Town

An enchanting scene of Skiathos town, nestled on the island in the Sporades, featuring tiled roofs glistening under the Mediterranean sun and winding picturesque alleys inviting exploration.

Skiathos town is the main settlement and the port of the island where you will find everything that you need for your vacation. It’s a picturesque town with tiled roof houses and colorful gardens, a delight to discover its winding alleys and stone-paved pathways, especially in the old part of the town.

There are also quaint little shops serving up creamy scoops of local gelato, bakeries tempting you with cheese pies and cookies, and cozy cafes and taverns serving up their delicious local cuisine.

A captivating image capturing the essence of Skiathos town, with its distinctive tiled roofs adding character to the skyline and quaint, winding alleys offering glimpses of local life and culture.

Be sure to visit the original house of Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece’s most significant writers, now transformed into a museum. Step back in time to the early 20th century as you explore this middle-class home and view personal items belonging to Papadiamantis. The museum is open daily for visitors.

But perhaps the most captivating sight in town is the stunning port, framed by four small islets, creating a picturesque backdrop. It’s a favorite spot for yachts and sailing boats.

Bourtzi Peninsula: A Blend of Nature and History

A captivating image capturing the essence of Skiathos town, with its distinctive tiled roofs adding character to the skyline and quaint, winding alleys offering glimpses of local life and culture.

Take a stroll along the port and you’ll come across the charming Bourtzi peninsula, a small fortified area lush with greenery. Keep exploring, and you’ll stumble upon a quaint chapel and the Museum of Maritime and Cultural Tradition of Skiathos in Greece.

Bourtzi is a beloved spot for sightseers, offering a picturesque setting with panoramic views of Skiathos stretching out before you. It’s the perfect place to soak in the island’s beauty and history.

Sun, Sand, and Surf: Skiathos’ Best Beaches

An idyllic view of a sandy shoreline hugged by lush pine trees, with the crystal-clear turquoise waters of Skiathos Island invitingly lapping at the shore.

You step onto the soft, golden sands of Skiathos and instantly understand why beach lovers flock here. All types of water sports are available at most beaches and even diving centers. As a rule, the closer you are to town the busier the beach will be.

Skiathos Town Beaches: Siferi and Megali Ammos

A tranquil beachscape featuring a sandy shore embraced by towering pine trees, against a backdrop of azure skies and the mesmerizing turquoise hues of the Aegean Sea.

If you’re short of time, Siferi and Megali Ammos are the closest sandy beaches to the town with organized and free parts for a quick dip. You’ll find them well-equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas and they can be very busy during July and August.

Nearby, there are plenty of beach bars and tavernas where you can grab refreshing drinks and savor delicious Greek cuisine. It’s the ideal spot for a brief but enjoyable beach outing.

A great budget hotel in the area is Megali Ammos House (family-friendly), at a very convenient location with the town center within walking distance.

Koukounaries (Top beach in Skiathos)

A serene image capturing the harmony of nature, with a sandy beach nestled within a vibrant pine forest, leading to the tranquil turquoise waters of Skiathos, Greece.

Just 13 km west of Skiathos town lies the stunning Koukounaries, renowned as the most famous beach on the island and one of the loveliest in the Mediterranean. Here, you’ll find golden sand, turquoise, crystal clear waters that blend with beach bars, umbrellas, and sea beds.

What makes Koukounaries truly enchanting is its setting: a dense pine forest embraces the beach, while behind it lies Lake Strofilias, a unique habitat that serves as home to a variety of rare birds. Koukounaries is one of the best things to do in Skiathos in Greece.

A fantastic hotel with killer views in Koukounaries is Skiathos Palace Hotel .

Lalaria Beach

A captivating sight of a sandy coastline flanked by verdant pine trees, where the shimmering turquoise waters of Skiathos' beaches merge seamlessly with the horizon, creating a breathtaking vista.

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, don’t miss out on the breathtaking Lalaria Beach located on the north side of Skiathos. You can only get there by boat, but trust me, it’s worth it. Picture-perfect white pebbles, clear blue water, and those cliffs? They’re like nature’s own masterpieces.

Keep in mind that Lalaria can get quite crowded during the summer months, and there are no facilities for shade, water, or food, so be sure to bring your supplies for a day in paradise.

Cultural Treasures: Monuments and Monasteries

You’ll find that Skiathos is not just about the pristine beaches and lush greenery; it holds a treasure trove of culture in its historical monuments and monasteries. Whether you are a history buff or an admirer of architectural beauty, these sites are a must-see.

The abandoned area of medieval Kastro in Skiathos.

Up on a rocky cliff, about an hour’s drive north of Skiathos Town, you’ll find Kastro, the island’s old capital, with stunning vistas of the Aegean Sea. Walk around and you’ll spot bits of history everywhere: old churches from the Byzantine era, a cannon, and even a half-ruined mosque. Check out the old houses still standing and the medieval fortress with its crumbling walls and towers.

While reaching Kastro by car isn’t possible because of the wild terrain, you can conveniently park your vehicle nearby and embark on a thirty-minute walk to reach the old town. Alternatively, for a more scenic approach, consider boarding a kaiki boat from Skiathos’ old port , providing both transportation and picturesque views en route to Kastro.

Evangelistria Monastery

A Monastery decorated with many small flags in Skiathos in Greece.

Nestled amidst the pine-covered hills, the Monastery of the Annunciation (Evangelistria) can be visited 5 km from the town of Skiathos. It was founded in 1807 and played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans. The first Greek Flag -with the white Cross on a sky-blue background- was designed, created, and raised here for the first time.

Today, 8 monks live in the monastery, taking care of everything, including the in-house museum with religious artifacts. It is open daily.

Mamma Mia Moments: Finding the Film’s Magic

An overview of the pier of Skiathos port where a scene of mamma Mia was filmed.

Skiathos was one of the dreamy spots where they filmed “Mamma Mia!” The filming locations in Skiathos are in the old port next to the picturesque and pine-covered peninsula of Bourtzi. From here is the scene where Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, run on a pier to catch the boat that will take them to Skopelos.

However, most of the shooting of the film was on the nearby Skopelos island and the Dancing Queen scene was in Damouchari village in Pelion .

Conquering the Trails: Hiking in Skiathos

A woman pointing at a paper hiking map in Skiathos Greece.

Skiathos is a wonderful place to hike with 197 km long trails criss-crossing the island. 27 signposted trails will take you to lush forests, coastal paths with killer views, creeks, springs, and peaks for Insta-worthy panoramas of the Aegean Sea.

If you also love culture, the paths pass by religious points of interest and archaeological and Byzantine treasures. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned hiker, Skiathos has trails for everyone.

After the Sunset: Skiathos’ Vibrant Nightlife

People at a party in a yard of a bar in Skiathos.

Skiathos is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and is often called the ‘Mykonos of the Sporades’. A must-visit spot to grab a drink is the famous “Pillows-Maxilares” located near the port and the Rock n Roll bar is one of the famous bars in this area. These iconic steps are where bars have placed cushions, allowing you to sit and enjoy your cocktail with a view of Skiathos Port.

For a drink at the old port, grab a seat at Marilyn or Danny & Zoe’s Blind Dog. For refreshing cocktails, head to Ginfish Cocktail & Bar in Megali Ammos or Jaguar for Mediterranean-inspired cocktails. And for clubbing, check out Pure on the waterfront.

Wine Tasting in Skiathos

People having wine tasting and a tour in vineyards in Skiathos.

In the Prophitis Ilias area, close to Skiathos town, you will find the only winery in Sporades. It produces excellent wine using Greek indigenous varieties: Assyrtiko, roditis, xinomavro, limnio, and malagouzia are some of its wines.

You can have a tour of the winery, and discover its history and the production procedure. Then you can have a wine tasting accompanied by nibbles of cheese, bread, meats, and olives enjoying beautiful views of Skiathos Town. You can also buy bottles of wine to bring home if you want to.

I suggest you take a taxi from Skiathos Town to the winery (15 minutes and €25) as the winery is high above Skiathos Town and only reached by a tricky road that is narrow, twisty, and climbs steeply.

You can check out the winery and the tours here .

Gastronomic Delights: Top Taverns in Town

There are plenty of traditional taverns and sophisticated restaurants in Skiathos. Some of my favorite ones are:

At Basilikos Restaurant on Evangelistrias Street in Skiathos town, you’ll get to taste an incredible cheese pie with handmade pastry and cucumber juice, feta wrapped in filo pastry with fig jam, and incredible seafood dishes.

Marmita Restaurant is located in the heart of Chora and offers gourmet and traditional recipes.

The seafront tavern of Scuna restaurant in Sporades.

Perched on the waves on the eastern beach of Chora since 1960, Scuna offers homemade flavors, a large and select wine cellar, a romantic atmosphere, and great music.

A modern Greek cuisine restaurant that is also worth trying is the award-winning Elia’s Restaurant inside Mandraki Village Hotel.

Hotels in Skiathos in Greece – Where Best to Stay

A view of the swimming pool of La Piscine hotel in SKiathos.

The majority of the hotels are in Skiathos town but there are also fine properties around the gorgeous beaches. Find below some of my favorite hotels on the island:

La Piscine Art Hotel, Philian Hotels and Resorts (luxury, adults-only), is a top hotel on the island if you are looking for luxury and excellent service.

Hotels in Skiathos Beaches

An overview of Skiathos Palace Hotel terrace and diner.

Skiathos Palace Hotel (mid-range, family-friendly, breakfast) is located on a cliff overlooking Koukounaries beach. That means that you will get a beautiful sea view from every location of the hotel.

How to Get to Skiathos

Skiathos belongs to the northern Sporades, an island group including Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros, and fifteen smaller islands, an Archipelago.

You can get to Skiathos either by flying or by ferry:

  • Direct Flights to Skiathos: Skiathos has an international airport (Papadiamantis Airport) with direct flights during the tourist season from various European cities.
  • Connect through Athens: Alternatively, you can take a flight to Athens International Airport (ATH) and then catch a connecting flight to Skiathos.
  • Skiathos is well-connected by ferry from the mainland ports of Volos in Pelion, Agios Konstantinos, and Mantoudi in Evia Island. Ferry services and high-speed Flying Cat vessels operate regularly, especially during the tourist season.
  • You can also take a ferry from the nearby islands, such as Skopelos and Alonissos .

When is Best to Go to Skiathos?

An image of the tourist seasons in Greece.

Skiathos is at its liveliest between May and October, making it a popular choice for many visitors. In July and August, it is very busy and crowded, so choose the month that best suits you. If you prefer fewer crowds and more moderate prices, consider visiting in May, June, or September/October for the best combination of pleasant weather and reasonable costs.

How to Get around Skiathos

Typical boat offering local tours in Skiathos port in Greece.

You can explore central Skiathos town only on foot as the alleys are tiny and made only for humans and the occasional motorbike. As for the rest of the island, I suggest the following:

  • Renting a Car : This is my preferred way of traveling in Greece as it offers flexibility to explore remote areas, beaches, monasteries, archaeological sites, and scenic viewpoints. However, if you are an inexperienced driver you might find some steep areas slightly challenging.
  • Public Buses: they are cost-effective (tickets are around €2), well-connected routes covering major destinations. The cons are the fixed schedules, too many people during high season, and limited or no service to remote areas. Find here info about the Skiathos bus routes.
  • Taxis are available in Skiathos Greece and they are super convenient, no need to navigate or park. The cost depends on how far you will be going on the island, anything between €10 and €25, and availability may vary during peak times.
  • Boat Tours are great and relatively cheap for exploring the nearby islands and secluded beaches. You can take them from Skiathos port. However, they are also limited to specific routes and schedules and they are weather-dependent.
  • Private All-Inclusive Full-Day Cruise & Lunch in Skiathos: You will enjoy a unique day sailing tour on Skiathos island with a new Luxury Sailing Yacht, a tailored trip to your preferences.

You can always opt for a combination of these options based on the activities and locations you plan to experience on the island.

Best Guided Tours in Skiathos

Experience the beauty of Skiathos Island with personalized guided tours, immersing yourself in its picturesque landscapes and rich history. From exploring hidden coves to discovering ancient ruins, let expert guides enhance your Skiathos adventure.

How Long Should You Stay in Skiathos

The ideal duration for a visit to Skiathos typically ranges from 3 to 7 days, allowing ample time to explore its stunning beaches, charming villages, and vibrant nightlife while savoring the island’s laid-back atmosphere.

Is There Nightlife in Skiathos?

Yes, Skiathos offers a lively nightlife scene, especially during the summer months. From beach bars to clubs in Skiathos Town, visitors can enjoy a variety of entertainment options, including live music, DJ sets, and beach parties, creating vibrant nights for all tastes.

Is Skiathos Island Expensive?

Skiathos Island can be moderately expensive, especially during the peak tourist season. Prices for accommodation, dining, and activities may be higher compared to other destinations, but there are options available to suit different budgets. Travelers can find affordable accommodations, local eateries, and free or low-cost activities to manage expenses while enjoying the beauty of the island.

Is Skiathos Safe for Solo Travelers?

Skiathos and Greece in general , is a perfectly safe country for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. In addition to that, Greek people are gene-programmed to be hospitable and are always eager to offer directions to your destination or any other advice, so ask freely.

However, as with any destination, it’s essential to exercise common sense and take necessary precautions, such as staying aware of your surroundings and belongings, especially in crowded areas or late at night.

Timeline: Skiathos’ Rich History

Skiathos island has been inhabited since prehistoric times, likely by Pelasgians and possibly later by Cretans. From ancient times until today, it has always been called Skiathos. The city of Skiathos was a steadfast ally of the Athenians.

In 338 BCE, Skiathos fell under the rule of the Macedonians, and the island lived undisturbed for many years. It was destroyed by the Romans in 199 BCE. There is little known about its Byzantine period but we do know that the islands suffered for many centuries by the invasions of the pirates.

In 1207, the Venetian Gizi brothers seized the island and built the Bourtzi to safeguard the capital from pirates, rather unsuccessfully. That’s why the inhabitants abandoned Bourtzi and relocated to the northern part of the island, which they fortified known as the Kastro, around the mid-14th century.

Fast forward to the 19th century, and you find Skiathos contributing to the War of Greek Independence. In 1829, when the new country of Greece was founded, the residents abandoned Kastro and relocated to Skiathos town.

Visiting Skiathos: Everything You Need to Know

posted by Nikos Tsakiris on June 9, 2023 // last updated on June 15, 2023

Nestled in the northwest Aegean Sea, Skiathos is a breathtaking Greek island belonging to the enchanting Sporades archipelago .

Known for its beautiful landscapes, deep green trees, and rockin’ bars and restaurants, Skiathos has become a sought-after destination for travellers seeking a perfect blend of pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich history.

One of the first to cash in on the Greek holiday boom thanks to an international airport Skiathos has remained one of the most popular Greek island holiday destinations.

Skiathos is a small and compact island, just 12km long and about 6km wide, and its main claim to fame is a plethora of large, deep, sandy beaches strung right the way along its southern coastline.

Recent years have seen an explosion in tourist facilities and, nowadays, a virtually unbroken line of hotels, apartments and neon-lit tavernas flank the once rural road that runs the length of the south coast.

A ban on high rise hotels has curbed major downmarket excess and the tavernas may be as much baklavas as burgers, but Skiathos still groans under its own weight in annual tourist numbers.

The island’s ever growing popularity has resulted in higher prices in the popular resorts and the inevitable drift to dumbed down tackiness.

The closely-packed Skiathos holiday beaches are sandy and safe for children, making this an ideal island for family holidays.

Most of the interior of Skiathos is hilly, heavily wooded and almost totally deserted with a few less crowded beaches on the north coast.

This picturesque island promises an unforgettable experience that caters to different preferences and ages, making it an ideal getaway for everyone.

The shores of Skiathos are home to numerous first-rate beaches that invite guests to relax and unwind while soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

The island’s picturesque town, known for its romantic atmosphere, captivates visitors with its charming narrow whitewashed alleys, and traditional architecture. For those seeking a more dynamic experience, the island’s intense nightlife is especially popular among young travellers, offering a wide variety of bars and clubs to dance the night away.

With so much to explore and enjoy, Skiathos is truly a gem waiting to be discovered.

Whether you choose to travel by ferry from harbours like Volos or Agios Konstantinos, or opt for a different route, this guide will help you make the most of your visit to this green paradise, ensuring a memorable holiday that will leave you longing to return.

Getting to Skiathos

Skiathos is a beautiful Greek island in the Sporades archipelago, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. In this section, we’ll discuss two primary ways to get to Skiathos: by air and by ferry.

Skiathos has its own airport, Skiathos International Airport “Alexandros Papadiamantis” (JSI), which serves both domestic and international flights. Several airlines operate seasonal direct flights from various European cities during the peak months, making it a convenient option for travellers.

In addition to direct flights, you can also fly to Skiathos via a layover in Athens. There are frequent domestic flights between Athens (ATH) and Skiathos (JSI), operated by local carriers.

Another popular way to reach Skiathos is via ferry. The island is well-connected to the mainland and other neighbouring islands by ferry routes. There are daily connections between Skiathos and the port of Volos in mainland Greece, as well as the port of Agios Konstantinos in Central Greece. The ferry ride typically takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the type of vessel.

Moreover, you can travel to Skiathos from other islands in the Sporades archipelago, such as Skopelos and Alonnisos, via regular ferry services.

When planning your trip, consider checking ferry schedules and booking your tickets in advance, particularly during the peak summer season, as routes can become busy. You can book your ferry tickets online or at local travel agencies.

In summary, Skiathos is accessible by air and sea, offering multiple options for travellers to reach the picturesque island and enjoy its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and lively atmosphere.

Where to Visit in Skiathos

Skiathos town.

The main island resort of Skiathos Town bristles with tavernas, bars and nightclubs all lying within a deep double bay on the south-eastern edge of the island.

This is a busy and bustling resort where cosmopolitan harbourside bars thump to disco music and the air is punctuated with the whine of passing mopeds. Charter planes swoop in low over Skiathos Town bay to land at the nearby airport and ferries pull in regularly with arrivals from the mainland.

The background noise may not be to everyone’s taste but it’s not unpleasant to lounge the evening away in one of the busy quayside cafe watching the tourists stroll by. Or you can join the throngs of holiday shoppers cruising the Skiathos Town boutiques and trinket shops that line the traffic-free centre.

Skiathos Town has two quays split by an outcrop of rock called the Bourtzi. Dozens of cafes run the length of both harbours with the old port to the west and the new harbour to the east. Cafes in the old harbour are bigger, many of them 10 or 12 tables deep.

The old harbour is also traffic-free, offering a pleasant evening stroll for visitors and it is here that the Skiathos island caquies pitch the display boards touting barbecue trips around Skiathos and daily jaunts to neighbouring islets.

The main Skiathos Town shopping street leads inland from the Bourtzi up the hill. Even more shops, cafes and tavernas are jammed along the narrow street, with the occasional whiff of sewage from the drains that run beneath.

Menus are uniformly pricey and meals are mediocre to poor as the volume of passing trade takes its toll on quality. Many new cafes have sprouted in the last few years as Athenian businessmen cash in on the roaring trade.

Tavernas overlooking the bay to the west tend to be the most expensive, as are the cafes that line the old harbour but none anywhere in Skiathos will be considered cheap.

Katsarou Village

South-west of the resorts of Megali Ammos and Vassilias is the coastal village of Katsarou. Some good hotels and apartments have made Katsarou increasingly popular with tour companies in recent years.

Katsarou is a typical sleepy village of cobbled streets and whitewashed houses just above the main road on the steep pine-carpeted hillside. The elevated position makes it cooler but the relative isolation will not suit everyone.

It is a steep one kilometre walk downhill to beaches at Vassilias and Kassandra Bay. Car hire here is a must unless you want to hide away for the holiday, although local hotels do offer free bus services.

For a quiet break in serene surroundings this could be just the spot. There are a couple of pleasant tavernas in the village.

Planning a trip to Skiathos? On this page you’ll find all the information you need for planning your holiday in Skiathos, from travel logistics to what you can see and do while you’re here.

Skiathos is a small island in the Aegean Sea, about 12 km (7 miles) long and 6 km (4 miles) wide, with a total area of about 49.898 km2 (19 square miles). It is the smallest of the inhabited Sporades islands. As of the 2011 census, the population for the island is about 5000. Most of the population lives along the southern coast, where the hills have more gentle slopes. The northern side of the island is more hilly and rugged. Pine forests cover much of the interior parts of the island, making it much greener than most other Greek Mediterranean islands.

The main towns on the island are Skiathos town and Koukounaries. The public bus runs from one to the other, stopping at many of the villages in-between.

Skiathos Island has been inhabited since ancient times. Skiathos town was founded in the 6th or 7th centuries BC by the Ionians. Over the centuries, the island has been conquered and held by a succession of colonizing civilizations, including the Athenians, Spartans, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.

In the 14th century, the island inhabitants abandoned Skiathos town on the coast due to relentless pirate raids. They relocated their settlement atop a large rocky outcrop and built a fortress. It is now the site of Kastro today and well worth visiting. In the 19th century, many refugees from the Greek War of Independence sought shelter in Kastro. After the War of Independence was over, the islanders abandoned Kastro and returned to Skiathos town. During World War II, the Germans bombed Skiathos. The town was rebuilt and it has been relatively peaceful since. Today, Skiathos town is a small, charming but modern and cosmopolitan center of the islands social life.

Travel to Skiathos

The quickest way to reach Skiathos is via plane. During the summer season, there are direct flights on chartered airlines from various cities throughout England including London, Bristol, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Newcastle as well as numerous departure points within continental Europe. Transport on the Island

C ar and motorbike hire

Hiring your own car or motorbike is a great way to see the island. You’ll have maximum flexibility and easy access to wherever you want to go. Skiathos is a small island with only one main paved road along the south coast. The road extends from Skiathos town to Koukounaries, 11km away. Most of the other roads on the island are dirt or gravel. Some of the roads can be steep and rough, with numerous narrow twists and bends, especially in the interior and the north. If you plan to take a trip to Kastro or any of the other more rural sites, it is advisable to rent a 4X4 vehicle.

Car hire can be arranged in advance for pick up/drop off at the airport or port, or in any of the car hire offices in Skiathos town centre.

The main public bus route on Skiathos runs from Skiathos town centre along the main southern coast road to Koukounaries. The route has 26 numbered stops, giving access to villages, beaches and tavernas along the way. In the peak summer season, buses run every 20 minutes. The late afternoon buses tend to become quite crowded as tourists make their way back to Skiathos town from Koukounaries.

There are also two minibus routes from Skiathos town active in the summer. One route takes you to Monastery of Evangelistria in the north. The other route will take you to Ksanemos (Xanemos) Beach on the northeastern side of the island, very near the airport runway. The minibuses leave from the same bus stop on the main bus line.

There are numerous taxis on the island and it is quite easy to pick up a taxi at the airport. There is also a taxi rank near the port. If you will be using a taxi often, be sure to ask for a business card or phone number. This will make it easy for you to arrange a taxi later in your trip. Taxi fares on the island are regulated, however, the fare may increase if you leave the main roads.

Water taxi is a fun way to travel around the island. Water taxis operate from Skiathos town to Koukounaries beach; to Kanapitsa and Tzaneria beach (Nostos); and to Achladias.

Check the port or ask your hotel for information on water taxi schedules and prices.

Things to see and do on Skiathos

Skiathos is known for its beaches. The tiny island has over 60 beautiful beaches along the 45km (27 miles) of coastline. The beaches along the south tend to be sandier, whereas the beaches along the north are more likely to be pebble beaches. Any kind of beach a holidaymaker could want can be found on Skiathos. Lively, organized beaches outside resorts and hotels complete with sunbeds and umbrellas dot the southern coast. You can easily travel to these beaches along the main southern road by hired car or public bus. In between these popular beaches and along the northern coast are quieter secluded beaches. Many of the more remote, hidden beaches are accessible only by boat. Others can be accessed after a hike across Skiathos’ rough terrain.

Some of the more famous or popular beaches are

  • Koukounaries
  • Tzaneria (Nostros)
  • Agia Paraskeui
  • Megali Ammos
  • Ksanemos (Xanemos)

Diving and Snorkeling

The water of the Aegean is crystal clear. You’ll be touring the island on your holiday, why not go under water as well? There are several dive companies on the island that can take you into the depths of the Aegean Sea. If you’re not sure about diving, you can go on an introductory dive. If you know you already love diving and want to get certified to dive anywhere in the world, you can take certification courses or, if you are already certified, you can log more dive hours.

You can bring your own snorkeling equipment and snorkel from any beach although the rockier beaches of the northern side of the island have more to see. If you don’t have any equipment to bring, you can rent snorkel equipment from the dive shops and go on your own or take a snorkeling trip with them.

Sailing and Yachting

Skiathos has about 45km (27 miles) of coastline. Many of the more remote and beautiful beaches scattered along this coastline can only be reached by boat. Hire a sailboat or yacht to take you around the island. You can spend time out on the open water, relaxing, eating and drinking and can access any of those remote beaches. If fishing is your main hobby, cast a line off the side and reel in what the Aegean has to offer.

It’s easy to hire a boat. Walk along the port and speak with each captain about boat amenities and where they can take you. You can hire a boat for yourself or, for a cheaper price, share the excursion with others.

Day trips to Other Sporades Islands

Taking daytrips to the other Sporades islands is a popular activity. Visit the towns and villages of neighbouring Skopelos or take an excursion to The National Marine Park on the island of Alonissos, home to the largest colony of the critically endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. If you hire a private boat, you can even sail around many of the uninhabited islands of the Northern Sporades.

In the summer there are daily ferries to the other islands. Check at the port for sailing times and prices to each island.

Hiking and Biking

There are numerous hiking and mountain biking trails crisscrossing the island. You will truly see all the beauty of the island while you venture where no cars can go. You can go on your own or arrange a hiking or biking excursion with an experienced guide. If you want to go on your own, pick up a terrain map and set out for your own grand adventure.

Be wary if you choose to go hiking or biking in the height of summer. Temperatures can soar and the sun can be fierce. Be sure to take extra water with you to keep hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen.

Churches and Monasteries

Skiathos has numerous small churches and monasteries scattered around the island. Most of the churches or monasteries located outside of towns or villages require a hired car to access, preferably a 4X4, but are well worth the visit.

Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria

The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is the only inhabited monastery on the island. It was founded in 1794 with construction completed in 1806. This monastery is important to modern Greek history as it sheltered many Greek fighters during the Greek War of Independence in the 19th century. A popular story is that the blue and white flag of an independent Greece was first flown here. A visit will also give you the chance to support the monastery by purchasing locally made wine.

The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is located about 5km north of Skiathos town and can be reached by hired car, taxi, minibus (summer only) or by foot.

Monastery of Panagia Kounistra

The Monastery of Panagia Kounistra is important to the island as it was founded in the 17th century on the spot where a monk found a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary. The icon is now kept in the Cathedral of Skiathos town, but every 21 November, a town procession carries it back to the monastery.

The Monastery of Panagia Kounistra is located in the forested hills outside Troulos and can be reached by hired car or taxi.

Museums and Historical Sites

In the 14th century, the inhabitants of Skiathos town had to abandon it due to pirate raids. They built their new fortress town atop a rocky outcrop on the northern side of the island. After several centuries, it was eventually abandoned. The ruins that remain make for a fascinating site to explore.

Kastro can be reached by 4X4 jeep or a boat trip to the beach below, followed by a steep hike up the hill.

The Bourtzi is a small peninsula hutting out into the harbor in Skiathos town. Covered in pine trees, there was once a Venetian fort located on it. All that remains of the fort are some ruined walls and old canons. The Bourtzi is now a cultural centre that features art exhibitions, children’s puppet shows and an open-air theatre. It’s a refreshing venue for a summer play or concert.

The Bourtzi is located between the new and old ports.

Museum Of Alexandros Papadiamantis

Alexandros Papadiamantis was a famous Greek author who wrote The Gypsy Girl, Tales from a Greek Island, and The Murderess. The home he grew up in was turned into a museum recording his life and writing.

The Museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis is located in Skiathos town along an alley a short walk from the port.

Skiathos is well known for its beaches, however there are also varied shopping options in Skiathos town. Along Papadiamantis street, you’ll find boutiques and shops that sell clothing, jewelry and souvenirs. There are many other touristy souvenir shops located around Skiathos town.

You can also buy handmade gifts at the Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria.

Most of the nightlife on Skiathos is fairly laid back and calm. There are numerous tavernas on the island, especially along the main road in the south from Skiathos town to Koukounaries. If you’re looking for a lively night out, head to Skiathos town for energetic and bustling bars and dance clubs. Most of the late night bars and clubs are clustered together near the new port.

Food and Drink

On Skiathos you can find a wide variety of local and international foods. In Skiathos town and in some of the villages are formal restaurants. If your style is more casual and relaxed, you can find tavernas in town, along the main coast road, and near most of the beaches. As Skiathos is an island, the seafood is fresh and a staple of island cuisine. In many places you will also find cheese pie brought over from neighboring Skopleos.

You can find both locally made and imported wine on the island. Beer is widely available, as is Ouzo, the national Greek drink.

Accommodation

Skiathos boasts a variety of types and styles of accommodation to suit any taste or budget. There are two-to-five star hotels in Skiathos town, relaxing resorts and villas along the scenic coast and apartment rentals throughout. If you’re on a tighter budget, you can also rent rooms independently.

For more information on just what kind of accommodation you may prefer, click here. You can also click here for information on available rooms.

Tips when Renting Holiday Accommodation Directly from Property Owners

Ensure that you speak, not just by email, with the person letting the accommodation. Any legitimate individual letting a property will provide their direct phone number on the site – if the do not, exercise caution.

Never pay directly into a bank account until you verify that the owner is legitimate. Paying by direct bank transfer is like paying by cash – the money can’t be traced and is not refundable.

Where possible, pay by credit card or a debit card that offers insurance – they are traceable and refundable, according to the provider’s terms and conditions.

Check reviews on properties you are interested in to see what previous guests had to say about their experience.

Ask for a rental agreement – a signed rental agreement between the owner and guest helps protect both parties. Typically, each owner or manager has their own payment and cancellation policies and house rules.

Skiathos Town

Skiathos Town

General information

Skiathos Town : The capital of Skiathos is built amphitheatrically on the south eastern tip of the island in a windless bay, full of simple white houses with tiled roofs and narrow streets. It is the same town since the classical period until the Byzantine one when the population moved to the fortified village of Kastro seeking security. In the early 19th century, they abandoned Kastro and moved back to Skiathos Town in 1829; since then the population has grown and the town expended.

Because it was destroyed by German bombs during World War II, it was rebuilt and prospered. Today almost the entire population of Skiathos is concentrated there. Because it is a very cosmopolitan little town, Skiathos Town has plenty of restaurants (Greek and international cuisine), tourist offices, shops (touristy, clothes and shoe shops), cafes, bars and clubs opened all night long and offering all kinds of music for everyone.

Most of the entertainment is located in the main street Papadiamanti and on the seafront. Everything is quite expensive and the in most of the taverns the quality of the products is not excellent because they are very touristy and the inhabitant of the island have neglected farming and agriculture for touristy activities so the island don't produce many local products.

Snack bars can be found in great quantity as well as luxurious restaurant such as Italian or a Greek restaurant functioning in a renovated windmill which is located on the highest hill of the town, overlooking the sea and the island.

The commercial port is separated from the old one by the little peninsula of Bourtzi, covered with verdant pine trees. On this peninsula are the remains of the old castle built by the Gizi brothers during the Venetian period. The old port is still quite picturesque despite of the high tourism and is a pleasant place for a walk, boarded with little fishing boats.

Sightseeing, activities & entertainment, photos by greeka members, photos by greeka team.

The island is basically a great big nature reserve with no water parks, discos, drunks and a general lack of unnecessary distractions. it is mindful beautiful, peaceful , organic and my favourite place in the world to go and just be. The food is fabulous and the beaches are beyond incredible. Not for the all day breakfast and football on big screen brigade im afraid

  • christa21 20 Mar 2009 Build a summer cinema The town is actually the only organized village of Skiathos but the other settlements seem to have only a few amenities for tourists. I guess when tourists go away, these villages are left with a few only inhabitants. The town though seems more populated (at least, in summer!). It has banks, stores, places to eat, everything. I just have two remarks: first, I had an unpleasant experience when the ATM kept my card inside and I had to borrow money from a friend for the weekend (it was Saturday evening when I lost my card and I went back to the bank Monday morning to get it back) and second, I didn't see a summer cinema in Skiathos. I think it would be nice to build an open cinema on the Castle.
  • iert003 14 Oct 2008 Evening entertainment in the town I always wanted to visit Skiathos as it seemed a great island to me from the photos I had seen. Indeed it is a great island with gorgeous beaches. Village life is not so good, except for Skiathos town which is the only descent village to visit. The rest are very traditional and not organized at all. My best activity in Skiathos town was dining!! It had every type of restaurant possible, from the cheap to the expensive. The food in general was excellent and the service very friendly. You have to go to Skiathos town for evening entertainment- eating or drinking, it is just lovely.

What to see in Skiathos

Skiathos, one of the most scenic and verdant Greek islands, owes its evergreen look to the trees scattered all over the place. But, what gives Skiathos this charming and attractive character, is its impressive coastline. There are more than 60 awe-inspiring beaches with white or golden, soft sand and crystal clear waters. The sublime scenery is highlighted by the history of the island and the hospitality of its people. Skiathos is like a piece of jewelry of the Aegean Sea!

The island is famous for its lively nightlife which makes it one of the top destinations for young people. Types of accommodation range from luxurious 5-star hotels and villas to simple rooms and studios or organised campsites for the nature lovers.

Skiathos Town is the heart of the island, with all the major events taking place there and some of the most popular beaches, which are easily accessed by bus or even by foot, very close to it. Even though Skiathos Town is the most populated village on the island, it is not the only one which offers quality accommodation and facilities. Along the southern coast of the island, you will find small summer resorts offering a range of alternatives, according to your preferences.

Whether you are on holiday with your family and you would like a tranquil atmosphere or with your friends and seeking for adventures, Skiathos is the right place for you! Needless to say that it is the heaven on Earth for the adventurers due to its mountainous terrain and the wild beaches of the northern side. For your romantic self, the island has spectacular panoramic views from the hills up north as well from the harbour of Skiathos Town where you can unwind with a glass of wine at the bars on the waterfront just opposite of the Bourtzi Fortress.

The island has a long history starting from the pre-historic era and continuing to the Classical, Byzantine and Venetian period. The majority of the monuments of the island are Byzantine churches and monasteries. Among the most popular sights are the Bourtzi Fortress and the Medieval Castle of the Old Town.

Apart from the historic attractions, when you are on the island it is worth visiting some of the most beautiful natural sights, such as the wetland of Koukounaries, the Sea caves and Lalaria, the pebbly beach right next to them on the northeast side, as well as the islet Tsougrias. The picture-postcard scenery of these areas will make you want to stay on Skiathos forever!

The beaches on the northern side are very quiet and secluded, because they are difficult to reach by car or bus. However, there are boats running from Skiathos Town regularly to take you there. The most popular beaches are the sheltered sandy beaches of the south coast where you will find all sorts of facilities, from accommodation, bars with sun loungers and restaurants to well-organised water sports schools.

If you are into sports it is worth signing up in one of these schools and going diving to explore the beauty of the Mediterranean sea. There are more than 300 fish species in the Sporades group of islands, such as dolphins, swordfish, tuna and rare red corals. You could also go horse riding or hiking in the well-defined walking trails in various locations around the island. Alternatively, you could take part in one of the daily tours organised from Skiathos old port. Some of the most popular ones are the tour to Skopelos, Alonisos and the Marine Park or the Mama Mia tour around the locations where the movie was filmed.

For those of you who like cultural events, there are plenty of festivals in the summer. Even if you don’t speak the Greek language, it is a great chance to get to know another aspect of the Greek culture. The Papadiamantis House is definitely worth a visit as it is a typical example of the architecture of the island.

If you want to have a taste of Skiathos cuisine in particular, you should try some of the local products produced with the finest ingredients, such as local sweet preserves, honey and olives from the olive trees of the island, as well as the freshly caught fish.

All in all, this small island with the natural beauty, the vivid nightlife and the hospitable and friendly people can turn your holidays into a memorable experience. You will absolutely love it!
