Cycle Route Ideas

Like most of Menorca this is more Natural, so don't expect too many cycle lanes. Better to use the off road tracks and marked routes as the little roads that make up much of the country network have lots of blind corners.

Son Bou Near By

Has a charming old centre set on a hill for wandering early mornings or late evenings when the extreme heat of the summer sun has gone. A small city and the "third" capital of the island and a cultural centre. The old town is very pretty and makes a great change to the beach, with some delightful Cafes, Bars and Restaurants. A few several clothes and shoe boutiques offering original items not chain store repetition. Childrens playground on the pretty town square (next to ice cream cafes!). Alaior has a weekly market plus an evening market (weds june-sept ) with Artisan goods, jewellery , other handicrafts and small boutiques.

Menorca Tips

There is a late night bus to return from Alaior's evening market. Alaior is home to the Pons Quintana shoe factory shop. A brand relatively unknown in the UK because most of its high quality leather shoes are exported to France and Germany. The shop offers reduced prices on beautiful high quality shoes and leather goods.

What to see in Son Bou, a tourist favourite in Minorca

Information

Many places on the idyllic Balearic island have preserved their authentic, traditional spirit, thanks to local festivals and prehistoric monuments. The Mediterranean air that you breathe on the island has a very special touch; the island’s spectacular coves seem as if they’re straight out of a magazine, like the beautiful Cala en Turqueta beach, whose name gives you a hint about the colour of its water. Minorca is full of charming places that you will fall in love with, whilst its small fairy-tale villages, such as Binibeca Vell , will transport you back to another time.

However, if we’re going to talk about popular places on the island, Son Bou deserves a special mention. The small area on the southern coast in the municipality of Alaior is full of attractions. In addition to having the longest beach in Minorca, the area also boasts a nature reserve. Add various places of interest, excursions and a wide variety of services into the mix and you’re left with an ideal destination, whether you’re looking for a more family-oriented environment or a holiday for couples .

Son Bou Beach

If you’re dreaming about a long beach with fine sand and crystal-clear waters , Son Bou is one you cannot miss. With over three kilometres of coastline, it’s easy to get there by car and you can park free of charge at its car park. The beach is perfect to visit if you have children in tow, as the water is shallow, which means they can play peacefully on the shore.

One reason why Son Bou attracts many visitors is because of the high number of services that it offers. You’ll find beach bars right on the seafront, as well as shops nearby where you can buy something to entertain the little ones. Sun beds and parasols can also be easily hired so you can relax whilst sunbathing. As it is within a developed area, there are pharmacies and supermarkets just a short distance away.

When the beach gets busy, you can walk westwards where there will be less people. This section of the beach is usually quieter, more natural and more untouched, which some nudists like to take advantage of. Don’t miss the magnificent sunsets that the beautiful coastal landscape of Son Bou offers.

Must-see spots in Son Bou

Minorca is not just about enchanting coves, its cultural heritage is equally important. Some of the most attractive monuments on the island are found right in Son Bou, including the Son Bou Paleochristian Basilica . The building’s remains stand on the eastern end of the beach making it quite the experience to view its ruins, which date from the fifth century, just a few steps away from the sea.

Torre d’en Galmés , the largest Talayotic settlement in the Balearic Islands, is another must-see. The site can be accessed via the road that connects Alaior with Son Bou, and it is a perfect opportunity to behold the talayots and to discover the mysteries of Talayotic culture .

One of the most unforgettable activities that the area offers is the route known as the Camí de Cavalls , a long-distance path that connects the beaches of Son Bou, Sant Tomàs and Cala en Porter. You can also skirt the whole island passing through Mahón and Ciutadella—a very special trail for all hiking enthusiasts. The walk is a great opportunity to discover Minorca’s extraordinary scenery on a 360 ° route made up of various stages with a range of distances to suit everyone.

If you want to observe birds and the natural landscape of Son Bou, head to the wetlands known as Albufera de Ses Canessies . Situated right behind the beach, it is a great place to spot hundreds of aquatic birds that breed among the dense vegetation in spring and summer.

Restaurants in Son Bou

Minorca’s food is one of its most deep-rooted hallmarks: a type of Mediterranean cuisine based on fish, seafood and vegetables. Lobster stew, scorpion-fish balls, and baked aubergines are some of the most traditional dishes that can be sampled. Thanks to tourism in Son Bou , it won’t be hard to find a restaurant to your liking to top off a day full of incredible experiences.

One of the most famous restaurants is Es Forn de Torre Solí Nou , housed in a former country house, which makes it an idyllic place to enjoy a special dinner. Thanks to its grilled specialities and traditionally decorated terrace, it will be impossible not to fall in love with the place. You can also choose between any of the establishments located on the beach, such as Ses Garces and Es Corb Marì—a romantic dinner option whilst the sun sets. However, if you prefer something faster or you’re after tapas, be sure to head to Bar Ones. To finish off your day there are various chill out bars in Son Bou, such as the Budha Lounge, where you can enjoy a drink whilst listening to some music.

In short, don’t hesitate to go to Son Bou to discover the countless attractions that it has to offer. Whether you’re travelling with your family or your partner, you’ll find the kind of atmosphere you’re after for a lovely holiday in Minorca.

Mahon Harbour Boat Tour with Mahon Market and Gin Distillery

Mahon Harbour Boat Tour with Mahon Market and Gin Distillery

What better way to spend a few hours than discovering and savouring the delights of Mahon, Menorca's history-steeped capital? On this morning tour, you'll enjoy a harbour boat trip, have free time to explore the old town on market day and visit a historic distillery. Nicola, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘If you scratch beneath the surface, you'll find the British influence in many older buildings such as sash windows, panelled doors, lunettes and more. A uniquely Menorquin touch is the ruby-red paint on these houses.'First up is a glass-bottom boat trip in Mahon harbour – the second largest in the world. Glide between fortified islets and admire the opulent villas lining the waterfront on either side. Some date from the 18th century, when Menorca was a British colony. Next, it's on to the old Xoriguer gin distillery for a guided visit. Menorca's favourite tipple has been made here, using the same recipe, since 1736 – yet another symbol of the island's British heritage. There's also free time to wander around Mahon under your own steam, admiring its Georgian town houses, baroque churches, palm-lined squares and narrow, cobbled streets. Head to the centrally located Plaza del Carme, where there's a market of vendors hawking everything from cured meats to fresh fruit under the cloisters of a 17th-century convent. The local square-shaped cheese is highly regarded throughout Spain.

Lloc de Menorca Visit with Free Time at Son Bou Beach

Lloc de Menorca Visit with Free Time at Son Bou Beach

One of the best family days out in Menorca. First up, you'll visit Lloc de Menorca animal park, a sanctuary for species from all over the world. And then you'll enjoy downtime at the blue-flag Son Bou beach. Nicola, one of our guides on this tour, says, ‘Small children will love the animal splash park and indoor play areas. And you can get your holiday snaps with a variety of animals, including a snake.'Set in beautiful, flower-filled gardens, Lloc de Menorca is home to all sorts of farm animals and exotic creatures. The welfare of the animals is the utmost priority. Nicola says, ‘Rescued animals enjoy a new life, in what would be their own normal environments – there are no cages.' And Debbie, another of our guides, adds, ‘The Lloc is so much more than a zoo – it's a sanctuary to many abused animals from circuses, illegal trafficking and even overbreeding.'As you follow the paths around the ponds, you'll come face-to-face with frisky monkeys, meet friendly dwarf goats and get up close to everything from kangaroos and giant tortoises to porcupines and peacocks. There's also a reptile house where you can have your picture taken with one of the squirming snakes. Spot lots of birds in the aviary, including cheeky parrots hiding in the leaves. To round off the day, we make the 15-minute journey to sun-kissed Son Bou – others take you to beaches further away. Boasting almost 3km of blond sand, it's the longest stretch of beach on Menorca. Here, stretch out for a sunbathe, go for a swim or have a poke around the souvenir shops. And if you opt in for lunch, you'll sit down to a tasty meal in Restaurant Arena.

Mahon Harbour, Xoroi Cave and Torralba d’en Salord Tour

Mahon Harbour, Xoroi Cave and Torralba d’en Salord Tour

You'll discover Menorca by land and sea, and inside out, on this full day tour. Activities include a Mahon harbour boat trip and visits to the unique Xoroi Cave and the Torralba d'en Salord megalithic site. Nicola, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Legend has it that the Xoroi cave was once the refuge of a man named Xoroi, who was shipwrecked during a storm and found shelter in the cave. The lore continues with tales of him falling in love with a local girl, leading to a romantic yet tragic story that adds an air of mystique to this stunning location'.The fun kicks off with a boat trip around Mahon harbour. At 5km long, it's one of the world's largest natural harbours. It's fringed by historic buildings, fortifications and dotted with islands. Back on dry land, there's a tour of Mahon town followed by some free time. Nicola adds, ‘Reminders of the century-long British rule are still visible to this day – you can see sash and bow windows, door latches and handles just as you would in the UK.'Just a little further east along the coast, you'll find the Cova d'en Xoroi, a bar uniquely set within a cave on a cliff face. Here, you can sip on a refreshing drink while soaking in the breathtaking sea views from what is undoubtedly Menorca's coolest bar. To round off the day, step back in time with a visit to the 3,000-year-old Torralba d'en Salord megalithic archaeological site – with your visit, you'll be directly contributing to its preservation.

You'll conclude the tour with some free time to discover more under your own steam or shop for souvenirs. We kick off with a guided tour. There's palm-shaded Plaça d'es Born, considered one of Spain's most beautiful squares. Plus, there are the lavish palaces tucked down the surrounding alleys. You'll visit one of these aristocratic mansions, the 17th-century Casa Olivar, which is stacked with antiques and tapestries, and boasts lavish ceiling frescoes. ‘The old town is a maze of narrow, winding streets fringed by honey-coloured buildings bathed in sunlight, while the tiny fishing port is pretty as a picture,' says Helen. You'll then have a couple of hours to wander around at your own pace. Have a poke around a huge variety of shops in the centre, including places to grab souvenirs, trinkets, clothes and more. It's also market day, offering even more local produce, textiles and leather goods – a discount card is offered for purchases here. The perfect island to travel with children

Menorca is the most eastern Island of all the Balearic Islands . A small island in the Mediterranean Sea with a maximum distance of 47 km. between Ciutadella and Mahon and 17 km. wide. Cala San Esteban(Es Castell)  is the first place in Spain where the sun rises .

In 1993 Menorca  was declared a  Biosphere Reserve  by UNESCO in recognition of the conservation of its natural landscape and heritage that marches with the economic development of the island.

Menorca has a lovely contrast to its coast. The north part is wild, with islets and mostly reddish and coarse sandy beaches, whilst the south coast offers a soft light and abundant vegetation with beaches and coves of fine white sand.  The sea is clean and transparent  with colours ranging from light blue to turquoise or green.

Discovering Menorca

The guide to an island of nature and culture

Atalis. Son Bou. Camí de Cavalls. Menorca

Sant Tomàs – Son Bou walking by the Camí de Cavalls

Facebook

This stretch of the Camí de Cavalls begins at the far western end of the beach of Sant Adeodat and continues along the two beaches of Sant Tomàs along a pleasant promenade running between the beach and the residential area. The first stretch can be walked along the beach itself. As you leave Sant Tomàs you climb a rocky path as far as Atalis , passing between the coast and the fields of this fertile section of coast. Once over the bridge over the canalized stream – Torrent de sa Vall or Son Boter – that flows down this gully, the route follows the edge of the Son Bou wetland through vegetation that changes the further into the gully you get.

Cross the stream on a set of stepping stones made from the local limestone just where the wetland ends and the gully begins and continue to skirt Son Bou along a path lined by pines and wild olives as far as Son Benet . After walking between fields and pastures, and crossing the bridge over a stream, Torrent del Barranc des Bec , you reach the residential areas of Son Bou . From here, the stage runs through the whole built-up area to its end at the car-park at the entrance to Son Bou . If you aim to walk this stage both ways in the same day, you could avoid this final, much less interesting built-up stretch by parking where the houses end and the path begins. Distance : 6.4 km • Difficulty :  Easy • Estimated walking time : 2 h 15 min

The surroundings

This stretch of the  Camí de Cavalls  is flat and, with very little uphill, is easy to walk. Nevertheless, it passes through a series of different habitats that include built-up areas, inland gullies, low rocky coastline, dunes, fields and pastures, and the wetland of Son Bou . This coastal marsh is fed by the gullies you cross on this stage of the walk and is separated from the sea by the sandbar that has created Son Bou’s 3 km of beach and dunes. Reeds and bulrushes dominate the vegetation of the wetland, which is an area of great biodiversity, above all in winter when many species of aquatic bird gather here.

Son Bou. Camí de Cavalls. Menorca

• Son Bou wetland : Also known as L’Albufera de ses Canessies, this is one of Menorca’s main wetlands and a must for birdwatchers and nature-lovers in general. • Son Bou paleo-christian church : Remains of a rectangular church with three naves separated by pillars that is thought to have been built in the 5 th century. It stands at the far eastern end of the beach of Son Bou , just a few metres from the sea. NEARBY SITES OF INTEREST • Torre d’en Galmés: One of the largest prehistoric settlements in the Balearic Islands, this site lies between Son Bou and Alaior , 5 km from the latter.

menorca_cami_de_cavalls_son_nou_barranc_lluc_julia

• Sant Tomàs  and Son Bou: At both ends of the stage you will find residential and tourist areas with all types of facilities, above all during the tourist season.

How to get there

Accommodation and logistics on Camí de Cavalls

If you want to go through the Camí de Cavalls in stages, either a part or all of it, you have to plan your trek well. There are no accommodation for trekkers on the path, so you will have to make use of the touristic accommodations you will find on the route. That is the reason why making the route outside the tourist season could be somewhat complicated.

It is important to adapt the route plan to your physical condition and your experience as a trekker. In many cases, the ideal choice is to hire a logistic service for you to resolve those shortcomings. This way, you will be able to get the most out of the experience.

Camí de Cavalls 360º is a specialised travel agency that helps you to make the route in stages, in a self-guided manner and with a series of related services (among others, accommodation and logistics). Camí de Cavalls 360º offers you different choices to traverse the Camí de Cavalls with autonomy, always adapting to your needs.

ALTERNATIVE ALONG THE BEACH OF SON BOU If you want to avoid the final built-up stretch but still reach the other end of Son Bou , you have the choice of walking along the beach of Son Bou . To do so, at Atalis leave the  Camí de Cavalls  and follow the coast along what is Menorca’s longest beach. This will also allow you to get a better idea of the most important wetland area on Menorca’s southern coast. The choice is not easy!

No, and no. :-)

I'm not aware of any snorkel excursions from the marina at San Jose (although I could be wrong). And the distance between the two is too great to make a water taxi feasible.

Alternatively, you can go into Cabo and do a tour, or take a water taxi from the Cabo marina with your own gear and go to Lover's Beach.
