Plot [ edit ]

When Squidward leaves the Krusty Krab as its about to close, SpongeBob asks him if he could visit him. Squidward angrily declines, making him upset as he's never visited him and begs him to come for the rest of the day. The next day, SpongeBob asks him again, only for Squidward to tell him he wouldn't leave the comfort of his home to visit him.

SpongeBob asks Patrick at his house if Squidward's ever visited him. He says he came once to take back something he borrowed, and tells SpongeBob he needs to borrow something from Squidward so he'll have to visit him. Later, Squidward is cooking, when he accidentally drops his pepper onto his plant due to SpongeBob doing home renovation. When he goes to get his vacuum, it turns out SpongeBob has "borrowed" it. He calls SpongeBob to ask why he "borrowed" his vacuum cleaner and that he'll be over there in 20 minutes.

He puts his casserole in his oven and walks over to SpongeBob's house. When he enters, it turns out SpongeBob has made his living room look exactly like Squidward's. He tries to find his vacuum, while seeing that SpongeBob has replicated all the rooms in his house. While in the bathroom, when Squidward sees that SpongeBob knew he had rash cream, he suddenly shows up, scaring him and making him slip on the rash cream several times until eventually knocking himself out.

He wakes up downstairs and lies to SpongeBob that he has to use his bathroom again so he can find his vacuum. He finds his vacuum in SpongeBob's replica gallery room in the closet. After retrieving it, he gets out of the house, only to realize his house was burned down caused by him leaving his casserole in the oven too long. SpongeBob invites him to stay at his house, which makes him pass out in shock. At night, Squidward is sleeping at the replica home while SpongeBob and Gary sleep on the floor which used to be Squidward's house.

Squid's Visit

' style=

(At the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob watches Squidward read an art magazine, and Mr. Krabs scuttles up and clears his throat for about 15 seconds nonstop.) Squidward: May I help you? Mr. Krabs: It's almost quttin' time, eh, Squidward? Got any big plans for after work? Squidward: No. (Krabs just leaves, and SpongeBob comes up next to Squidward.) SpongeBob: Hey, Squidward. Pretty incredible shift, huh? Squidward: Yeah, if you say so. SpongeBob: Any plans after work? Squidward: No. SpongeBob: Yeah, me neither. Just gonna be hanging at casa de esponja. You're welcome to drop by, if you're in the neighborhood. (He laughs, but Squidward zooms out of the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob gives chase.) SpongeBob: Hey, Squidward! Wait up! (He catches up.) SpongeBob: Squidward, I realize that I didn't really extend a proper invitation back there, so what do you say, Squidward? Why don't you come over to my house for a visit tonight? (No answer, so SpongeBob keeps poking poor Squidward.) SpongeBob: Squidward? Squidward? Squidward? Squidward: SpongeBob, thank you so much for that lovely invitation. But, I must respectfully tell you, I will never visit you. EVER!!! (He keeps on walking.) Squidward: Take heart, Squidward, it'll all be over soon. (SpongeBob clings to Squidward's legs, sobbing.) SpongeBob: Oh, please come over for a visit, Squidward! It's been so long! I can't even remember your last visit! Squidward: That's probably because I've never visted you. SpongeBob: Please, please, please!?! PLEASE!?! (He clings to his legs and keeps wailing, "please", even as Squidward goes to the bus stop, the laudromat, Barg-N-Mart and eats at Fancy!. Squidward drags SpongeBob behind him until they get to the front door of Squidward's house. Squid wipes SpongeBob off his foot on the welcome mat and goes inside, locking SpongeBob out.) SpongeBob: OK, Squidward! Maybe some other time! (He gets up and goes home.) Narrator: 24 hours later... (SpongeBob slides up next to Squidward at the register again.) SpongeBob: Heyo, Squidward. You got any--? (Squidward pinches SpongeBob's lips shut.) Squidward: Before you ask me that question, ask yourself this-- "Why would I leave the comfort of my own home for your dirty little hovel?" (He lets go of Sponge's mouth.) SpongeBob: What if I got a couple of throw pillows? (Cut to SpongeBob's kitchen. SpongeBob and Patrick sit at the table, and Patrick is trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle.) SpongeBob: Patrick, has Squidward ever visited you at home? Patrick: Only once. He had to take back some stuff I borrowed. SpongeBob: He said he wouldn't leave the comfort of his home for my dirty little hovel. Patrick: Borrow something. Then he'll have to come over to get it back. (He glues two pieces together and then leaves the puzzle in a whole mess of dried glue and pieces.) Patrick: Well, thanks for letting me play puzzle with you. See you later! SpongeBob: That's it! (Later, Squidward is cooking in his kitchen.) Squidward: A stick of butter, and just a touch of pepper... (He adds the ingredients to a bowl. A hammering sound startles him, and he accidentally tosses his pepper shaker at a coral plant, which catches it and spills pepper onto a rug.) Squidward: No, not the rug! (Squidward looks out his window and sees SpongeBob with some scaffolding and a ladder outside his pineapple house.) Squidward: SpongeBob, could you keep it down? I'm trying to cook! SpongeBob: Oh, hey there, Squidward! Just doing a little home improvement. Squidward: Well, you made me spill pepper all over my imported rug! (SpongeBob laughs.) SpongeBob: OK, Squidward. (Squidward looks at his rug and gets angry.) Squidward: SpongeBob... (He storms over to his closet.) Squidward: Better get the right tool for the job... (Squidward is shocked to see an empty closet with a note from SpongeBob inside with a little drawing of a smiling sun next to his signature.) SpongeBob: (Reading note inside Squidward's head) "Dear Squidward, thanks for lending me your vacuum cleaner! Sincerely, SpongeBob SquarePants!" (The note changes to SpongeBob's face.) SpongeBob: Oh, and P.S.... (He starts laughing uncontrollably, and Squidward is furious. He calls SpongeBob's house. Sponge bangs on the table and the phone flies into his hand.) SpongeBob: SquarePants residence. Squidward: Why do you have my vaccuum cleaner? SpongeBob: Squidward! It's been quite awhile since I got a phone call from my favorite next door neighbor! Squidward: That's because I've never called you! Now, why have you stolen my vaccuum cleaner. SpongeBob: I didn't steal it, silly! I borrowed it. Squidward: Are you done cleaning up that dingy hole you call home? SpongeBob: You won't even recognize the place, Squidward! Squidward: Yeah, probably not. (SpongeBob starts breathing heavily. We see the two neighbors from thier windows, just a few feet apart.) Squidward: I'll be over to get my vacuum in 20 minutes! (He shuts his window and hangs up the phone.) SpongeBob: Oh, Squidward is finally coming for a visit! (Squidward places a soufle' in his oven and later goes over to SpongeBob's house. He knocks on the steel door and SpongeBob answers.) SpongeBob: Squidward! I've been expecting you! Welcome to my humble abode! I hope that you will find yourself comfort and please don't hesitate to ask if there's something I ca-- Squidward: Get out of my way, I just want my vaccuum back. (He enters and looks around, shocked.) Squidward: You made an exact replica of my living room! (It's true, the entire bottom floor of SpongeBob's house looks identical to Squidward's from the inside.) SpongeBob: Well, you said you wouldn't leave the comfort of your own home, so I brought the comfort here! Isn't that great!?! (He starts having another laughing fit.) Squidward: No, it isn't! You can't just steal my decorating style! (He does a facepalm.) Squidward: Alright, just give me my vaccuum. SpongeBob: Would you care for a cool and refreshing iced tea? Squidward: No! SpongeBob: Hot orderves? Squidward: No! SpongeBob: Nachos? Squidward: No! SpongeBob: Spumone? Squidward: I don't even know what that iS! Now please just give me my vaccuum so I can get back home. I have a cassrole in the oven! SpongeBob: Yes, of course! Please have a seat while I go get your vaccuum. Please make yourself at home! (Squidward sits on the sofa, and SpongeBob starts fluffing a pillow.) SpongeBob: Enjoying your visit so far, Squidward? Squidward: This is not a visit, and you are going to get my vaccuum! And stop fluffing this pillow! SpongeBob: OK, Squidward! Just yell if you need anything! (He swipes the pillow and SpongeBob walks off. Then, Squid takes a closer look at the coffee table.) Squidward: Imbecile. (Gaps.) Squidward: How did he do it? He got my coffee table, my vase, snack bowl, coasters and ornamental Art of the Clarinet coffee table book! And this pillow looks just like the one Mommy knitted for me! He even copied her stitch signature! (He reads a stitching at the bottom of the pillow.) Squidward: (Reading) "For Squiddy, with love, Mama". (Squidward screams.) SpongeBob: You yelled? Squidward: Nevermind, I'll find the vaccuum myself! SpongeBob: OK, make yourself at home! Squidward sure seems to be enjoying his visit. (Squidward goes to the hall.) Squidward: My hallway... Dear Neptune, he even has the chip in the paint from when I moved in! ...OK, Squiddy, don't get freaked out. Just get the vaccuum and go home! (He opens a door.) Squidward: Alright, isn't this neat? My bathroom... (He flushes the toilet and looks into his medicine cabinet.) Squidward: I have to give him credit, though. Every detail is correct! How does he know the exact content of my medicine cabinet? My rash cream! That little sneak! SpongeBob: Did somebody say, "rash cream"!?! (Startles Squidward, who flies into the wall, and SpongeBob spills some on the floor.) Squidward: SpongeBob, you idiot! SpongeBob: Squidward, the rash cream. (Squidward slips on the rash cream and crashes, holding his nose in pain, and SpongeBob squirts more onto the floor by mistake.) SpongeBob: Oops! (Squid slips again with a shower curtain on his head.) SpongeBob: Oh, no! (Now Squidward has a drawer around his neck and he splashes face-first into the toilet and the lid closes on his head.) SpongeBob: Uhh... I don't think I have a cream for that. (Squidward later wakes up on his sofa and his eyes dart left and right before he relaxes.) Squidward: What a horrible nightmare. SpongeBob: So, are you enjoying your stay at Chez Spongee? (Squid screams very loudly.) Squidward: Uhh... Would you excuse me for a second, I have to use the bathroom again. (SpongeBob winks, and Squidward goes up the stairs.) SpongeBob: (Offscreen) Hurry back, Squidward! Squidward: Gotta find that vaccuum and get out of here! (He goes into the replica of his artist's loft and turns on the lights, gasping.) Squidward: He copied all 492 of my self portraits... And they're better than mine. (Lays down on a rug wth his face on it.) Squidward: Get ahold of youself, Squiddy old bean. This doesn't mean anything. This, this... All of this is just... Mimickry! He doesn't possess your style or your decorating acumen or your love of the finer things! In fact, the only thing he has is, is... Is... MY VACCUUM CLEANER!!! And I'll remedy that, post this! (He looks in a closet, which has the vaccuum cleaner, fishing lure decoration and diver's helmet TV.) Squidward: Aha! It went in here with the rest of his bad taste. (Struggles to pull the cleaner out.) Squidward: You're coming home... Home with me! (He yanks so hard that everything flies out of the closet and into his face. He's upside-down on a tipped-over couch now, and Gary's food bowl hits him on the head. The vaccuum is inside his mouth, the nozzle sticking out.) Squidward: (Through vaccuum nozzle) SpongeBob!!! (On his way down the stairs, he almost trips, then catches himself. Then, he takes another step and does trip all the way to the bottom of the stairs, where he spits the vaccuum cleaner out.) Squidward: Is it really you? It is you! (Embraces it and kisses it repeatedly.) Squidward: Come on baby, you and I will walk out of this horror show the same way we walked into it-- with dignity and pride. (He walks out of the pineapple with the cleaner and a siren catches his attention. SpongeBob and Patrick watch as firemen put out smoldering reminds of Squidward's house.) Squidward: My house! Patick: You just missed the fire. Squidward: What hapened to my house!?! Firefish: Some knucklehead left a cassrole in the oven. Squidward: SSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGEEEEEEBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOBBBBBBB!!!!!! SpongeBob: Oh, don't worry, Squidward. You're more than welcome to stay at my house until you get your house fixed. (Squidward goes insane and his a vision of him at a table with the vaccuum, a teapot and a teacup.) Squidward: Why, yes, I'd love another spot of tea, Mr. Vaccuum Cleaner. Care for some cassarole? (He laughs insanely and faints.) SpongeBob: Squidward, are you OK? Squidward? SQQQQUUUUUIIIIIIDDDDDWWWWWAAAAARRRRDDDD!!! (Cut to Squidward sleeping in his bed.) Squidward: Ahh... Replica sweet replica! (He falls asleep. SongeBob is sleeping on the rubble from Squid's house.) Gary: It sure was great having Squidward for a visit, eh, Gary? (He goes to sleep and his blaket dissintegrates.) Gary: Meow. End

SpongeBob desperately wants Squidward to visit his house, so he takes Squidward's vacuum cleaner in order to lure him in. Squidward comes to retrieve his vacuum, but is shocked to discover that SpongeBob has redecorated his home to look identical to his own.

"Squid's Visit" contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button : After Squidward's house is destroyed, SpongeBob invites him to stay at his house until it's repaired, leading to Squidward going mentally insane to the point of hallucinating a tea party with his vacuum cleaner.
  • Bittersweet Ending : Squidward’s house gets destroyed from the casserole staying in the oven for too long, but SpongeBob allows Squidward to sleep at his house until Squidward’s house is repaired, while SpongeBob and Gary sleep on the spot where Squidward’s house was.
  • Borrowed Without Permission : SpongeBob wants Squidward to visit his house, so he asks Patrick if Squidward ever visited his house. Patrick tells him that Squidward only visited his house once, to take back some things he borrowed. He then suggests to SpongeBob that he should borrow something of Squidward's, so Squidward will have to come over to get it back. Following Patrick's advice, SpongeBob borrows Squidward's vacuum cleaner, and when Squidward notices, he calls SpongeBob to ask why he stole his vacuum cleaner. SpongeBob tells Squidward that he didn't steal it, he borrowed it.
  • Broken Record : SpongeBob yells "Please! Please! Please!" nonstop, as he is begging Squidward to come visit him.
  • Brick Joke : Squidward puts the casserole in his oven before going to SpongeBob's house. When he comes out, it caused Squidward's entire house to burn to the ground.
  • Chekhov's Gun : The casserole Squidward leaves in the oven.
  • Everyone Has Standards : As clingy as SpongeBob is towards Squidward, he seems genuinely worried for him when he goes catatonic and faints when he has to stay with SpongeBob while his house is being rebuilt.
  • Exploding Closet : When Squidward opens SpongeBob 's closet and tries to pull the vacuum cleaner free, all of SpongeBob 's stuff comes exploding out.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending : The episode ends with Squidward falling asleep in SpongeBob 's house and SpongeBob falling asleep outside.
  • Heroic BSoD : After his home burns down, Squidward enters a catatonic state when SpongeBob offers to let him stay at his house.
  • Insistent Terminology : SpongeBob didn't steal Squidward's vacuum cleaner, he merely "borrowed" it.
  • Ironic Echo : "SPOOOOONGEBOOOOOB!"/"SQUIIIIIDWAAAARD!!!"
  • Jerkass Ball : SpongeBob seems to be annoying Squidward deliberately when he tries to get him to visit him. He steals his vacuum cleaner, replicates the interior of his house to look like Squidward's, and straight-up ignores his favor to have the vacuum back for the sake of wanting him to have a proper visit.
  • Laser-Guided Karma : After SpongeBob puts Squidward in psychological paranoia, Squidward sleeps in the replica of his bedroom in SpongeBob 's house, while SpongeBob and Gary are forced to sleep out in the open on the burnt out wreckage of Squidward's house. Not that he minds it, though .
  • Leg Cling : SpongeBob clings to Squidward's legs, crying and begging him to come visit him. He doesn't let go of them even when Squidward is at various places.
  • MacGuffin : Squidward's vacuum cleaner, which SpongeBob "borrows" from him so he can visit.
  • Manchild : SpongeBob screams and cries like a baby while clinging to Squidward's leg, begging him to visit him.
  • Mood Whiplash : SpongeBob screams and cries nonstop to Squidward, begging him visit him just once. Once Squidward goes home and slams the door, SpongeBob immediately returns to his normal happy self.
  • Ominous Music Box Tune : Plays when Squidward imagines himself going crazy and having a tea party with his vacuum cleaner.
  • Psychological Horror : While still comedic, this episode is probably the closest the show has gotten to tackling this genre. It has a chillingly unnerving atmosphere throughout and the plot is all about Squidward's growing paranoia.
  • Say My Name : After Squidward gets his vacuum cleaner into his mouth, he begins to shout Spongebob's name while the hose begins to hiss. In the ending, Squidward furiously shouts SpongeBob 's name for forcing him to stay so long his house burned down. SpongeBob , oblivious as usual, offers Squidward to stay at his pineapple house, which puts Squidward in so much shock that he faints, making SpongeBob loudly shout Squidward's name.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy : SpongeBob tries to get Squidward to visit him and does whatever he can to ensure he stays, not even bothering to give his vacuum back. In the end, he ends up getting more than what he wished for when Squidward's house burns down from the casserole, allowing him to stay at his house for a longer time, but he is kicked out and forced to sleep on the wreckage.
  • Series Continuity Error : Squidward claims he never visited SpongeBob 's house once and never will and also that never called Spongebob on the phone, but he went there many times and has called Spongebob before.
  • Stalker without a Crush : SpongeBob takes this to ridiculous levels. He screams and begs Squidward to come for a visit, ignores his insistent refusal, flat-out steals his belongings so Squidward has no choice but to go to SpongeBob 's house, breathes heavily into the phone, and somehow manages to recreate the interior of Squidward's house down to the tiniest detail, such as the exact contents of his medicine cabinet and the stitching on his favourite throw pillow.
  • Suddenly Shouting : This is how Squidward declines SpongeBob 's invitation to his house. Squidward : SpongeBob , thank you so much for that lovely invitation, but I must respectfully tell you I will never visit you. EVER! ( his yell blows SpongeBob away )

Original air date: 7/17/2009 (produced in 2008)

Every pair of SpongeBob 's square pants shrink in the wash and he's forced to wear a pair of round pants in the meantime. Believing that nobody recognizes him thanks to his new pants, SpongeBob decides to get a new start on his life.

"To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants " contains examples of:

  • Corrupt the Cutie : While training under Squidward at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob becomes just as rude and lazy as he is, and Squidward happily takes credit for it.
  • Fantastic Racism : While SpongeBob is at first worried that Sandy doesn't recognize him, he later brushes it off as "Neptune knows what goes on in a squirrel's head". He then imagines a live-action squirrel chattering and visibly cringes.
  • Faux Horrific : The Narrator treats the day SpongeBob changed his pants with great dread. Stock Footage of natural disasters and a lady screaming in terror even play as he recounts it.
  • Flashback : The events are told "three days ago" from the beginning of the narration.
  • Gone Horribly Right : The round pants that SpongeBob buys cause him to be unrecognizable.
  • Here We Go Again! : After Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to take off the round pants, he does so, leaving his underwear exposed. Sandy then comes over and calls him " SpongeBob Under Pants", causing SpongeBob to flip out over potentially starting his life over again.
  • Human Notepad : Patrick has a note on his hand to remind him that SpongeBob wears square pants. So when SpongeBob starts wearing round pants, Patrick doesn't recognize him.
  • Only Sane Man : Squidward and Mr. Krabs were the only ones who recognized SpongeBob without his square pants.
  • Overly Long Gag : It actually becomes a plot point, as Patrick calls SpongeBob just so he can make noises with his tongue and spends so much time doing so that SpongeBob 's pants shrink while they were in the washing machine.
  • Plot Hole : The store attendant tells SpongeBob that they’re not getting another shipment of his square pants for months. However, three days later (at the time of the episode’s narration), he is wearing square pants again.
  • Shrunk in the Wash : SpongeBob leaves his pairs of pants in the dryer and gets distracted by a phone conversation with Patrick. When he takes them out, they're all miniaturized, forcing him to buy a new pair.
  • Whole Episode Flashback : The episode is told as a flashback to "three days ago" by the narrator as he recalls the day SpongeBob literally changed his pants.

  • "What does Squidward wanna do in this episode? Just have a relaxing Sunday. And SpongeBob and Patrick through in it beyond belief in ways that just aren't even funny." (Good Neighbors)
  • "With it not being funny, it is not a good episode, and I rewatched it and what really pushed me over the edge from Meh right into ScumBob territory is SpongeBob's infernal laughter. They make it even more annoying in this episode by adding a squeaky toy effect to it. And it PLAYS CONSTANTLY IN THE EPISODE. AND THEN, HE CRIES A LOT IN THE EPISODE." (Funny Pants)
  • "It's one thing if you're a parent and you can't afford to give a kid a birthday party, but the fact that Mr. Krabs has all of that money, and he refuses to get her even a cake is just really sad and comes off as just, almost child abuse here." (Whale of a Birthday)
  • "You know exactly what's gonna happen soon as he gets the new spatula, and it's not really any fun to watch." (All That Glitters)
  • "It's an episodic show and if you know this, then there's no tension in the episode because obviously, Plankton's gonna stay evil and obviously, it's part of some law-running scheme." (New Leaf)
  • "I mean yeah, the wig looks silly but everyone in this episode just outright attacks SpongeBob." (Wigstruck)
  • "Ugh, there really isn't much that to redeem in this episode." (The Thing)
  • "A lot of the stuff just falls flat and I don't even know if there is that many jokes to begin with and that reference really is just pointless." (Hocus Pocus)
  • "Yeah, we have two episodes in a row where Patrick is a jerk. But this time, there is not really much to redeem and he is just a jerk through and through." (Rule of Dumb)
  • "It's episodes like these that just really feel like the universe is out to get Squidward and SpongeBob is a real jerk here, he is controlling the Squidward puppet, right?" (Squid Wood)
  • "I mean the second half is meh, but the first half is really stupid and it's insulting that they dragged Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy into this mess." (Night Light)
  • "This is the first episode where he is primarily by himself, and he proves that this is a terrible, terrible idea because apparently the only jokes you can tell with Patrick is that "err-du-durr", he's stupid." (Rise and Shine)
  • "It has SpongeBob crying excessively, it has things that don't make sense like apparently SpongeBob missed his surprise birthday party that happened 5 seconds off screen, and obvious jokes like Patrick eating the cake and, has the fact the episode just barely even bothers with the plot or any sort of gags!" (Waiting)
  • "That's all the entirety of the episode is. People eating disgusting fungus, people scratching disgusting fungus, SpongeBob being mutilated by this disgusting fungus, that's all it is." (Fungus Among Us)
  • "It's kind of obvious this episode is trying to catch on in success with the Krusty Krab Training Video, but there are a number of things that are really wrong with this episode." (Boat Smarts)
  • "There's supposed to be this competition between Squidward and SpongeBob in order to say all the customer's names, but really only Squidward is trying. SpongeBob is kind of naming all these people. He's not really fiercely competing with Squidward, he just kinda seems to be going around saying hi to everyone like SpongeBob would usually do." (Good 'Ol Whatshisname)
  • "Too much of my life, this special did rob! I think it's clear that it is a SCUMBOOOOOOOOOOB!" (Atlantis SquarePantis)
  • "Because this was the episode that was so bad, so frustrating, so un-SpongeBob like that made me wake up and realize the show was no longer the same. It is very much a SCUMBOB episode, and that song will haunt in my nightmares. I pray to Neptune and Poseidon that I never have to see it again." (SpongeHenge)
  • "It was not fun to watch then, and it's not fun to watch now. I hate splinters. More than the average person. When I was a child, I walked barefoot on a deck and ended up with over thirty splinters in my feet. There were so many splinters that I had to go to the hospital and be put in a strait-jacket while the doctors pulled them out. There were so many, in fact, that they couldn't get all of them out. The splinters stayed in my feet, and I had to soak them in hot water for the next few weeks just to get them out. I. Hate. Splinters. A good episode would take something as horrifying as splinters and make them funny, using comedy to take away my fear of them, and take away the power that they have over me. This is not a good episode." (The Splinter)
  • "I think this episode would've been great as a 4 minute episode back in season 5. I think the slide whistle jokes are unusual and interesting, and to have a whole "short" based around them would've been clever. But this goes on for way too long. It's a- (cuts to a real life Pieguy blowing a slide whistle and sliding the instrument out) SCUMBOB." (Slide Whistle Stooges)
  • "And there's another extended scene where SpongeBob, Squidward, and Mrs. Puff are in the car that goes out of control, and then what happened some kind of science laboratory where they get shrunk and almost eaten, and then wiped down the drain. It just goes on and on, and has nothing to do with anything! And it's not mentioned again! It's definitely a Big Lipped Alligator Moment ! But more than that, this episode is a SCUMBOB episode." (Boating Buddies)
  • "Of course, Mr. Krabs is gonna make Spongebob print lies. Of course, the lies are actually hurting people. Of course, Spongebob's last story is going to be about Mr. Krabs. DUH." (The Krabby Kronicle)
  • "SCUMBOB! SCUMBOB!! SCUMBOB!!!! I REALLY Hate This Episode Guys! SO Much About This Bothered Me! Where do I even start with this one?" (Choir Boys)
  • "So apparently, Spongebob doesn't know what a Viking is. The guy who celebrates Leif Erikson Day doesn't know what a Viking is. The guy who wears a Viking hat in his own opening theme doesn't know what a Viking is . It's not even like him not knowing what a Viking is is really that crucial to the story. I just- I don't understand why... it's even... I just... what?" (Dear Vikings)
  • "This thing was actually nominated for an Emmy. And it didn't win, for a very good reason. This episode is a SCUMBOB!" (Dear Vikings)
  • "...and I really have no idea how they keep making the same mistake over and over again. (cuts to real life Pieguy, looking and sounding really disheveled) And you know what ? They do it again ! And it's the very, next, episode! (blows slide whistle)." (Cephalopod Lodge, transition to Squid's Visit)
  • "Uggghhh. 123-124, Truth or Square. A TV movie so bad, it takes up two production numbers. Since I've already talked about this thing a lot, and it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that it's a SCUMBOB epissode, how about we do something a little bit different?" (Truth or Square)
  • "It is one of the worst pieces of television I have ever seen produced. It's sad that it could turn out this bad when the show makes so much money. And when I say so much money, I mean eight billion dollars, annually . That's how much this show brings in, and yet still decide to shoot around Nickelodeon Studios, they still decide to get the cheapest, laziest celebrity cameos, most of them not even being in the same room as our main actor, effects that are bad, but not in any sort of funny way, editing that is just sloppy at best, poor camera work, it drives me up a tree when I see student projects from my college look better than this! In my opinion at least, this is the ultimate middle finger to the audience. This is Nickelodeon saying "Yeah, yeah we hardly put money, or time, or effort into this thing, but sure, we're gonna make you sit through it, because we know you wanna watch Spongebob, and we thing you'll watch literally anything! So we're gonna shove some terrible, terrible, terrible things right in the middle of Spongebob just to stretch out the episode to get more commercial breaks and more money from ya!" I know I say this a lot, but I really don't ever want to see these segments ever again! Obviously, they're SCUMBOB segments." (Truth or Square, Patchy segments)
  • "I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If they'd actually done a clipshow with actual clips from previous episodes, and I'm not talking about the clips of Patchy at the beginning and end of this thing! I mean, actual funny Spongebob clips, and memorable Spongebob clips, if they had used those , then this would actually feel special. This would actually feel big, and important, and just a big celebration of what Spongebob is and was! But instead, all it is is a reminder of how much the show has changed. Even without Patchy, it's a SCUMBOB episode, and a really pathetic one, for an anniversary special! " (Truth or Square, Spongebob side)
  • " And there's an overly long, annoying sequence where SpongeBob puts his face up to the cage with Triton is capped while Triton's been shrunk down, so that SpongeBob's face is huge and his breath is stinky, and his face is just drawn in such a grotesque, unappealing way! Is that supposed to be a joke? What's it so funny about having SpongeBob's ugly face that close to the camera for that long? It's not like the quickly flash to it or anything. If it wasn't funny at the first second, holding on it isn't gonna make it any funnier! It's a SCUMBOB episode, and there's not even any comedy here on top of all of the other problems! The last shot is the Bikini Bottom's mind brand of chase after SpongeBob after their town has been destroyed. What a wonderfully fitting way for the season to end!" (The Clash of Triton)
  • "Yeah, we're starting this one off with a SCUMBOB episode, which is the first time this has ever happened." (Tentacle-Vision)
  • "...but more fitting is Sandy's quote (which is written "Time to go catch me some scum!")! Because this is indeed a SCUMBOB episode." (Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy)
  • "The episode isn't bold and brash, it just belongs in the trash." (Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful)
  • "So, was this episode a wonderful surprise out of nowhere? No, actually, I really don't like this episode. I think it is SCUMBOB episode. I really think this whole thing is a big mess. It's halfway stuck between trying to be epic and trying to be silly, and it ends up being neither of these things." (Back to the Past)
  • "For the first half of this, I wanted to plug my ears, and the second half of this, I nearly fell asleep." (A Day Without Tears)
  • "Between all these little ambiguities, you're left with an episode that's just unclear in general. Who am I supposed to be rooting for here? I know most people wouldn't root for Mr. Krabs, but was it the intent that we were supposed to root for Mr. Krabs? Was it the intent we were supposed to root for Plankton? Are-Are we supposed to root for Spongebob? I'm not entirely sure." (One Coarse Meal)
  • "They definitely could've been more clever way to include her in the story. I see no reason to go in for the detail because call it Someone's in the Kitchen with Gramma pretty much gives it everything you need to know about this episode. SCUMBOB!" (Gramma's Secret Recipe)
  • "Also, this episode featured some really noticeable CGI, and there's quite a few animation mistakes for some reasons! You think that the first episode for their big special of the season were actually having more love and care put into it, SO IT'S NOT TO HAVE SUCH GLARING MISTAKES! But no, now then, they didn't care!" (The Monster Who Came to Bikini Bottom)
  • "I wonder if the title of the episode refers to the quality of this show." (That Sinking Feeling)
  • "This is... a SCUMBOB! (mocking Spongebob) Am I sure? Am I really sure? Am I really- YES, I'M REALLY SURE! " (Hide and Then What Happens?)
  • "Just the episode is so repetitive and not funny, and just drives on that Good Ol' Patrick's stupidity. " (Big Sister Sam)
  • "...which I like, except for the fact that this episode is awful! Thanks in part to Patrick and Spongebob." (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "But like I said, that part is not too bad, what really kills this episode is Patrick! Why do they think that Patrick shoving random objects into his mouth is funny? It doesn't make any sense. Patrick's not confusing these items for food items, he's just literally shoving whatever is important to the plot down his fat gullet! For no reason ! Even dumb people have motivation for their action! Even if it is a stupid motivation, it's still a motivation. Patrick has none whatsoever." (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "And with SpongeBob tagging along, it makes sense because he got in on the tickets, what's awful is that Patrick just pops back up in the middle of the episode out of complete nowhere ! How did he get into the concert? How did he get into backstage? Hurr-durr, for the lols, I guess. But it's not funny, and it just makes the story frustrating! And seeing him going up onstage and ordering food? God, it's so stupid ! And then for some unexplained reason, the crowd lets Patrick crowd surf! WHY !? Why are they happy that Patrick just interrupted the concert with his idiotic reading of what he wants to eat!? And that doesn't make sense either, because how does a stage in any way resemble a fast food restaurant? Just because Patrick is stupid does not give the writers license to have him do literally anything ! That's bad writing, and this is a SCUMBOB!" (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "...and for an episode called "Bubble Buddy Returns," Bubble Buddy sure has returned that much in this episode! He gets like 3 lines!" (Bubble Buddy Returns)
  • "169a, "Are You Happy Now?" -(mumbling) Because I'm sure I'm not.- Squidward becomes depressed after realizing he has no happiest memory." (Are You Happy Now?)
  • "There are a lot of Season 8's SCUMBOBs that aren't that bad, but this one? This one is that bad! " (Are You Happy Now?)
  • "It's obviously a SCUMBOB episode. It's the same exact story as Hooky, and The Main Drain, and Sailor Mouth, and Karate Choppers to an extent, which is fine if you're gonna do something with it, but they don't. They use this basic story type of Mr. Krabs telling Spongebob and Patrick not to do something that they do anyway to just angle a bunch of stupid faces in our face!" (Face Freeze!)
  • "But nope! They need to make sure you know that she wants him to die an aggressively death! " (Demolition Doofus)
  • "Yeah, it's a SCUMBOB episode! It's certainly not unwatchablely bad, but it's definitely bad!" (Squid Baby)
  • "I don't really have a problem with Squidward being punished for doing a bad thing and I also don't have a problem with the show treating diary reading as if it's some serious crime but what I do have a problem with is that that is what the rest of the episode is. Squidward doesn't change or learn, no one tries to read Squidward's diary, there's no interesting turn here, it's just people being down on Squidward." (Little Yellow Book)
  • "Hooo boy! THIS is a BAD episode! Buckle up guys, because this is gonna be a long review." (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "...like imagine if in the SpongeBob movie, instead of Mr. Krabs not allowing SpongeBob to run the Krusty Krab to because he was too immature, but instead, because [mocking Mr. Krabs] it would've saved me a heck penny! Ar-ar-ar-ar-argh! That would've been stupid!" (SpongeBob You're Fired)
  • "...but uh-oh! All Spongebob can make is Krabby Patties! Because that's never been done before, and the worst part about this is that it's not a montage, it's not a bunch of quick cuts. It's a long drawn-out thing of Spongebob going to restaurant after restaurant after restaurant where the same thing happens every time. It's as monotonous as Atlantis SquarePantis. Having a character do something four times with the same result every time is not an interesting story !" (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "So after all that, Spongebob goes home, and goes to feed Gary, but he doesn't have any Snail Po, so he makes his own, which turns out to be like a Krabby Patty because that's all he can make. Oh, wait, no, that would make sense. Instead he makes really good tasting snail food. Which leads to... nothing at all ! This whole scene of Spongebob making snail food has nothing to do with anything that happens in the episode! You think maybe it's gonna set up that "oh wow, Spongebob can actually make snail food, so maybe he'll go work at a snail food place?" But no, no, that's not what happens. So the show just contradicts itself and says he can make something other than Krabby Patties for exactly no reason ! And then after this, Spongebob gets kidnapped! By the hot dog guy. The one who thought that Spongebob making his hot dogs into patties was an abombination? Yeah, apparently, he served them to his customers, and they loved it. This directly contradicts what happens earlier in the episode, where he throws the patties on the ground and kicks Spongebob out! But hey, who needs consistency? Who needs logical sense? It's just a wacky Spongebob cartoon! No, it's not for the sake of a joke, Spongebob doesn't point this out, it's just an inconsistency because they didn't care! " (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "... surprise of all surprises , the Krusty Krab was horribly run without Spongebob! Because that has never happened on the show and wasn't the most obvious way to bring him back to the Krusty Krab! Look, I get it. It's obvious to everyone that he's gonna end up back at the Krusty Krab at the end of the episode, but that's no reason to just completely phone in the excuse just to get him back! Come on, do something different, give us something better than this ! It's a SCUMBOB episode, and you probably saw that coming, right? But, didn't I make the ride to get there enjoyable and interesting, even though where I was going to end up was very obvious? Hmm, if only this episode did that! But no, this is just abysmal ! The episode has no focus with random scenes that have nothing to do with anything, a completely awful reason for the story to even happen in the first place, is stupidly melodramatic and slow, and almost everything that happens in it feels so been there, done that! Even the name of the episode is very similar to "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired"! Was there any good joke in here? I have no idea because I was too distracted by how awful this story is! And the ending to the episode was the most bland and predictable thing to ever happen in Spongebob! And by the way, had exactly nothing to do with the events of the episode! You could show the beginning of the episode, do a time card that says "One day later..." and then show the ending of the episode, and you would lose exactly zero information! Great story, right? Where everything the protagonist does has exactly nothing to do with the main conflict!" (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "Anyway, this episode is... now, what's the word? Um... Oh yeah. AWFUL! I actually had trouble coming up with a description for this episode because the conflict doesn't actually kick in until very, very late." (Company Picnic)
  • "And yeah, if it wasn't obvious, that's Bob Barker as Bob Barnacle." (Sanctuary!)
  • "The episode is also obvious! Because they show us at the beginning that it's Plankton in disguise. It would've been one thing if they left it ambiguous, like they strongly hinted it was Plankton, and Krabs would suspect it being Plankton, but surprise plot twist, it actually isn't Plankton. But no, they just point-blankly show us that it is Plankton from the very start, and no duh, his plan is going to fail!" (Married to Money)
  • "First off, a large chunk of it is spent with characters being dumb, and they go with the laziest way to portray a dumb person! They have them go "DUH... DUH... DUH..." and just walk into walls and stuff!" (Salsa Imbecilicus)
  • "The humor is infantile, and the focus is scattershot. There're some good ideas in here, but the execution is just imbecilicus !" (Salsa Imbecilicus)
  • "Hey, I've been working on these videos for a long time, not every single fact can be fun !" (Mutiny on the Krusty)
  • "...but the diaper gag actually genuinely made me shudder. Patrick puts a diaper inside of his head and eye sockets and says it feels squishy. Eughugh..." (Whirly Brains)
  • "It's funny that snooze is in the title because it's definitely what I want to do while this episode is playing." (Snooze You Lose)
  • "I'll tell you where SpongeBob's Place is. SpongeBob's Place is at the bottom of the ocean with the rest of the SCUMBOB episodes ! " (SpongeBob's Place)
  • "I just cannot stand that they did this idea again . It's already frustrating enough that they tried to fool the audience the first time, but this time it just feels like a really poor man's version of that." (Plankton Retires)
  • "...but an even bigger issue than that is the whole lost children concept of this episode, where SpongeBob runs into a bunch of elderly people that were apparently kids that got lost in the Krusty Krab. The episode could've had a monster be the antagonist or had SpongeBob being lost be in the main conflict all on its own, but for whatever reason, they decided to have these elderly people who literally lost their childhood and adulthood to the Krusty Krab's weird basement lost and found. These characters aren't interesting or funny on their own, so nothing distracts me from how depressing this concept is! Yeah, it's SpongeBob, and yeah, it wasn't supposed to be taken as dark, but GOSH, DARN IT! IT IS DARK ! " (Lost and Found)
  • This transition returned after a few years in the Top 10 Spongebob Shorts video, altered slightly. It is now in HD, has a faster animation, and the scum does't fade in and out of the screen.
  • Season 6's scumbob transition is what seems to be a stream of scum getting flinged at the screen. The scum is likely based on the baby worm's vomit from Pet or Pests, as well as the overall gross aesthetic of season 6.
  • Season 7's scumbob transition is scum falling from the top of the screen to the bottom before being drained out with brown scum showing up. The scum is in three shades of green. This doesn't seem to have a clear reference, but it could be a reference to the toxic waste jug's sludge from The Monster who Came to Bikini Bottom. The animation of the scum draining could be a reference to The Main Drain.
  • Season 8's scumbob transition is a simple scum ribbon swirling on the slide with scum spreading everywhere. This is likely a reference to the effects of jerktonium from It's a Sponge Bob Christmas!
  • Season 9's scumbob transition is a scum ball rising up and popping, leaving scum everywhere. This is reference to the goo bubbles from It Came from Goo Lagoon.
  • Season 10's scumbob transition is a green spherical sponge moving on the top of the screen from right to left cropdusting the slide with scum. This is a reference to Neptune's Moon from Feral Friends. Additionally, the scum is modeled to look like chalk drawings, in reference to the Mrs. Puff theme of that video.
  • From seasons 6-9, he uses his devil Piecon.
  • In season 10, likely due to the lower amount of Piecons, he uses the angry red eye Piecon.
  • Slide Whistle Stooges has PieGuy use his neutral face, likely because most of the attention was on the slide whistle being pulled.
  • Choir Boys got 3 scumbob anouncments. The Piecons used were the devil Piecon, the big frown Piecon, and finally, the fiery hair icon.
  • Ghoul Fools uses the Flying Dutchman Piecon to match with the ghostly theme of the episode.
  • The Splinter and Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom use the fiery hair icon, the former due to PieGuy's personal hatred for the episode and the latter because of his extremely angry rant about Patrick.
  • This is also share this error with the Meh episode House Fancy.
  • In the season 4 video, PieGuy called the treatment of Pearl in the episode Whale of a Birthday to be "child abuse," which seemed to be the major element to ranking it the number 2 worst. He was very quick to take that back in the Spongey Bits review of the episode. In fact, in that video, it was implied that he now considers it better than All That Glitters, putting it to at least number 5 of the worst list of that season.
  • PieGuy explain that The Monster That Came to Bikini Bottom was terrible, but it at least had a few good moments with Squidward.
  • PieGuy explained that Stuck in the Wringer only got bad when Patrick reentered the story, as before that, there was some funny slapstick at the Krusty Krab.
  • PieGuy also explained that A Pal for Gary (a very infamous episode by the fans) was not on the list because it had some redeeming qualities with the action and the monster, as well as the only really bad thing being Spongebob's behavior, and the smaller problems being the first half being a bit dull.
  • During the scumbob transition for Married to Money, Cashina, the image used for the episode, is visibly seen getting electrocuted before becoming her scumbob form.
  • The season 5 shelf uses Whatever Happened to Spongebob?, Night Light, Rise and Shine, and Waiting.
  • The season 6 shelf uses Slide Whistle Stooges, Giant Squidward, Grooming Gary, The Card, Dear Vikings, and Cephalopod Lodge.
  • The season 7 shelf uses Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy, Summer Job, Back to the Past, Gramma's Secret Recipe, and You Don't Know Sponge.
  • The season 8 shelf uses Sweet and Sour Squid, Patrick's Staycation, Pet Sitter Pat, Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom, and Restraining Spongebob.
  • The season 9 shelf uses Patrick-Man!, Sanctuary!, Food Con Castaways, and Mutiny on the Krusty.
  • Good Ol' Whatshisname was ranked the number 10 best Spongebob short out of how there were no meh shorts and only 9 good shorts at the time. It was later replaced by Don't Wake Patrick, the first meh short.

Why Will This Make Babies Cry [ ]

  • Much like many other Season 6 episodes, this is another 11 minutes of Squidward torture, even though this time is less rampant compared to Season 6.
  • The idea of SpongeBob and Patrick treating Squidward like a baby is absolutely humiliating and ridiculous.
  • Terrible beginning: In this scene, SpongeBob and Patrick play with their baby toys, which makes them look like the man-children. Yeah, you can say they're supposed to be childish, but acting like this? It's way too weird and ridiculous even for them!
  • The episode makes light of head injuries, to a disturbing effect.
  • The name Head-go-boom-boom-itis is highly inaccurate, as the suffix -itis is only applied to diseases characterized by inflammation, and the stem word is the body part affected, for example appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. Since the name head-go-boom-boom-itis does not fulfill either category, it can be seen as making light of actual inflammatory diseases.
  • Excessive gross-out humor, up to and including a scene where Squidward soils his diaper (complete with a gross close-up).
  • The first half is a rip-off of "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve," where SpongeBob and Patrick took care of a baby in SpongeBob's house, and this time even has Patrick watch the same show that he saw in that episode while SpongeBob's taking care of a baby (Junior).
  • The second half is a rip-off of "Goo Goo Gas", where firstly, Squidward became a baby and secondly, SpongeBob took care of a baby (Baby Krabs) in the Krusty Krab.
  • Mr. Krabs is unlikable for forcing Squidward to work at the Krusty Krab despite SpongeBob warning him of Squidward's injuries. He also pathetically treats Squidward like he's normal despite his infant amnesia hampering his personality.
  • Patrick is unlikeable for causing most of Squidward's injuries and leaving SpongeBob to watch him at the Krusty Krab when he falls asleep.
  • SpongeBob is also slightly unlikable for not taking very good care of Squidward and changing him in the kitchen, which is not the right thing to do.
  • Plot-hole: Near the end of the episode, Baby Squidward needs a diaper change, so SpongeBob tries to find a place to change him, Mr. Krabs instincts the kitchen to change Baby Squidward's diaper, question: Would have been a bit more logical if Mr. Krabs told SpongeBob to change Baby Squidward's diaper in the bathroom instead of the place they make the food in?
  • Both Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick walk away from their mistakes scot-free.
  • Mediocre ending : Squidward reverts to his usual self and upon seeing his diaper, becomes shocked and walks away in disgust. SpongeBob simply remarks that they grow up so quickly. A gross-out innuendo was slapped into the audience's face before the episode cut to black.
  • This doesn't help the fact that it serves as filler.
  • This episode is the result of "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve", gone wrong.

Redeeming Qualities [ ]

  • Though SpongeBob and Patrick are to blame for Squidward's head injury in the first place, they do try their best to prevent it from happening again.
  • The fish Nat references Fred's iconic My Leg! gag when he says "My face! My face! Also my leg, but mostly my face!"
  • SpongeBob "before the Kitchen scene" was likable with Squidward.
  • At least Squidward turns back to normal at the end of the episode.
  • At least SpongeBob knows how to take care of a baby well unlike Fatprick, Mr. Ketamine Drug addict Krab, and the pricks that inhabit Bikini Bottom.
  • The animation is still great as usual, considering the fact that the series was still animated with Toon Boom Harmony at the time.

Reception [ ]

Along with " Little Yellow Book ", SpongeBob You're Fired " and " The Fish Bowl ", "Squid Baby" is widely considered to be one of the worst episodes of Season 9, even though it was somewhat perceived better compared to the former two episodes.

PIEGUYRULZ gave this one a SCUMBOB rating, and he considered it to be his second worst Season 9 episode, but he stated that this one wasn't "that" bad.

  • This is LS Mark's least favorite episode of the whole show, ranking it at the bottom of his list. [1]
  • Ironically, this episode is paired with the super-famous License to Milkshake.
  • This episode was originally going to be #1 on TheMysteriousMrEnter's 'Squidward torture' episodes list, but was not included as he had already reviewed the episode.
  • This episode was broadcasted on MTV2 one time.

Infamous Quotes [ ]

" Are you out of your ever-living mind?! We can't change that baby out here in front of the customers! Take him in back where the food is prepared. "

Is This the First Recorded Footage of a Colossal Squid Living Freely?

The only sightings of the animals so far have come from corpses or creatures dragged up from the depths

Evert Lindquist, Hakai

Colossal Squid

Just after 10 a.m. on January 6, 2023, in the Southern Ocean some 680 miles south of Argentina, Matthew Mulrennan’s underwater camera captured a one-of-a-kind sighting: There, roughly 575 feet beneath his vessel, a lone squid was propelling itself through the frigid water. With its outstretched vermillion tentacles, see-through body and faint blue bioluminescent glow, this five-inch-long squid is, potentially, the first  colossal squid  ever filmed in its natural environment.

Glass Squid

Mulrennan, a marine scientist and founder of the California-based nonprofit Kolossal, has been working since 2017 to record footage of wild colossal squid ( Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni ). Cephalopod experts are convinced Mulrennan filmed some sort of glass squid, the scientific family to which colossal squid belong. But they remain unsure whether it was a young colossal, an adult Galiteuthis glacialis  or a previously unknown species in the closely related genus Taonius .

The Antarctic water where Mulrennan’s team spotted the squid was full of marine snow, giving the video a grainy quality reminiscent of the first photos of another little-known cephalopod: the giant squid .

Although both cephalopods are so elusive they’re practically legendary—and often compared to the mythical kraken—colossal squid have bigger, heavier bodies and slightly shorter tentacles than their giant brethren. While giant squid were first photographed and filmed in their natural habitat in 2004 and 2012, respectively, the only sightings of colossal squid have come from corpses or animals dragged up to the surface.

Until, perhaps, now.

Colossal squid were first scientifically described by zoologist Guy Robson in 1925 after a sperm whale washed up in the Falkland Islands with two colossal squid tentacles in its stomach. Since then, the massive animals have rarely been caught, photographed or even seen. That’s a striking feat for a creature longer than a cargo container with eyes the size of volleyballs. As adults, colossal squid are Earth’s largest invertebrates. They eat Patagonian toothfish (also known as Chilean sea bass ) and are hunted by sperm whales. When they’re young, colossal squid seem to venture closer to the ocean’s surface, where they’re picked off by penguins, albatrosses, seals and Patagonian toothfish. Little else is known about their behavior; most clues are derived from fishing line nibbles, examinations of predators’ stomachs and the occasional squid corpse that washes up on a beach.

William Reid, a marine biologist at Newcastle University in England, was lucky enough to get up-close with a colossal squid after fishers unexpectedly pulled one up in 2005 near South Georgia Island, located between Antarctica and South America. Although its several-feet-long mantle was too heavy to salvage, Reid’s incomplete 440-pound specimen revealed how the hooks and suckers that line the squid’s arms can pop off, giving the animal an impressive grip but also offering easy detachment from prey and predators.

In the depths of the ocean where little light penetrates, Reid suspects colossal squid are ambush hunters that wait patiently for prey to wander within reach, then use their long arms to stuff their catches into their beaks. He says the squid’s giant eyes may be adept at seeing bioluminescence, which could alert them to hungry sperm whales coming their way.

Colossal squid have been documented a few other times, too. Soviet fishers caught and photographed the first whole colossal squid in 1981 off eastern Antarctica. In 2003, fishers from New Zealand snared a dead 660-pound juvenile colossal squid in Antarctica’s Ross Sea, and then, in 2007, they pulled up a live 1,100-pound adult from a depth of almost 5,000 feet. And in 2008, Russian scientists caught one farther west in the Dumont d’Urville Sea.

But no one has ever seen a colossal squid living, undisturbed, hundreds of meters below the surface where it naturally dwells. And, as Reid emphasizes, because colossal squid tend to collapse under their own weight when dragged from the highly pressurized deep sea, studying them in their natural environment is the only way to see both their behavior and fully intact anatomy.

That’s why, from December 2022 to April 2023, Mulrennan and his crew set off on four multiweek trips from Ushuaia, Argentina, aboard the Ocean Endeavour , a tourist-packed expedition vessel operated by Intrepid Travel. Sailing alongside roughly 200 curious tourists, Mulrennan and the Kolossal team traveled to the South Shetland Islands, South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula and other areas below the Antarctic Circle in search of the oversized squid.

While passengers slept and disembarked on day trips to see penguins, whales and Antarctica’s icy terrain, the researchers—including Jennifer Herbig, a doctoral candidate at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador—took turns dropping a tethered underwater camera from one of the ship’s gangways into the freezing water below.

“We’d put the camera in the water at midnight or 1 a.m., be up until 4 or 5 a.m., and then have to get up at 6 or 7 a.m.,” Herbig says. With the camera dangling as far as 1,300 feet underwater, it became a near-constant effort to keep it from getting hooked on sea ice and disappearing into the deep.

In total, the team captured 62 hours of high-definition footage. Along with their prospective colossal squid, the scientists spotted a giant volcano sponge—animals thought to live up to 15,000 years—and dozens of other deep-sea Antarctic species.

It was challenging work made easier by the ship’s other passengers, who brought the scientists cookies and hot chocolate during long nighttime deployments. Herbig, for her part, cherished the tourists’ interest. “They could just peek over our shoulders and see what we were doing, so we got to explain some of the science,” she says.

“Every day on the ship, I was asked, ‘Did you find the squid?’” Mulrennan recounts. “People really want to know more about these large kraken-like species”—especially the ship’s chef, who kept joking about cooking the squid if they found it.

Whether the video Mulrennan’s team captured turns out to be a juvenile colossal squid or not—that final determination depends on continued examinations by squid experts at New Zealand’s Auckland University of Technology—the Kolossal researchers aren’t finished with their quest just yet.

While last year’s expedition relied largely on using an underwater camera to film close to the noisy vessel, the team hopes to revisit Antarctica as soon as November 2024, armed with a much broader suite of tools.

Mulrennan is looking to upgrade from one underwater camera to as many as a dozen, which he can deploy simultaneously, and he wants to add remotely operated cameras that would enable filming farther from the boat. Another option for improving their technique, says Herbig, would be to get longer camera cables so they can peer even deeper into the colossal squid’s frigid domain. Herbig adds that they could also bring equipment to analyze environmental DNA and measure biomass, helping the team study the abundance of creatures that share this deepwater habitat.

With a tattoo on his left arm commemorating zoologist Guy Robson’s 1925 sighting of a colossal squid, Mulrennan hopes to lead or inspire a verified underwater filming of a live, wild colossal squid by 2025.

“If finding the giant squid was like landing on the moon, then finding the colossal squid’s going to be like landing on Mars,” he says.
