We had an amazing morning on Sunshine Daydream with Lee as our captain! We enjoyed a day of cruising, snorkeling, swimming and sightseeing. Lee was not only a great captain, but storyteller as well. We had an absolute blast. We’d been on the island for over a week, but the captain found great snorkel spots we had not hit by land. The boat was beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed, and the stops were just what we were looking for. It was the highlight of our trip!

Rob took us out just before New Years on his beautiful brand new boat. Rob brought us to wonderful peaceful bays to snorkel away from the rain, wind and currents. We appreciated his fantastic suggestions and really enjoyed the day.

No grumpy captains here! After using another popular company in Cruz Bay that kept us on a time table where we could not do half of what was promised, we switched to this awesome crew for our next charter. They were super chill, stuck to the game plan and if we decided to change our plan to spend more time in White Bay there was no issue and no attitude.

Looking to do a day trip to the British Virgin Islands? Joining one of the many St John Boat Charters is a great way to explore the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding BVIs. 1. bad kitty usvi charter experience.

We did a full day boat trip with the Bad Kitty BVI charter boat and loved it. It’s the local power catamaran that flies between islands while serving rum cocktails. Running 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, the trip costs USD $195 for adults, and $130 for children aged 2-11 years old, and includes:

• Continental breakfast
• Open bar after snorkeling
• Snorkel gear

The boat was fast. The crew was exceptionally accommodating and the drinks were strong. It was a medium sized group (20 of us) and a big enough boat to not feel like an ‘organized tour’.

With a small upper deck, you could kick-back with the captain and sip away as the Bad Kitty charter boat pierced its way through the Sir Francis Drake Channel (between US and British Virgin Islands).

It’s not the most relaxed or quaint way to see the islands (there are also sailboat St John boat charters), but if you want to cover some ground in a day and see a variety of locations, it’s the way to go. Bad Kitty’s first stop is The Baths at Virgin Gorda, then you visit Norman Island for snorkeling, and then White Bay on Jost Van Dyke.

Please note, when visiting the BVIs there is an additional cash fee of USD $85 per person for the BVI customs.

When going on a St John Boat Charter day trip, the British Virgin Islands you’ll explore can vary based on whether you choose an organized group tour or a bespoke private charter. Here’s a glimpse of the beautiful destinations we visited during our trip with Bad Kitty.

Virgin Gorda Baths

“The Baths” is an area of monolithic granite structures towering above the white sandy beach.

It is a wonder of stacked, smooth boulders that have created a series of caves and shallow “baths”. Apparently pirates observed locals bathing in the shallow pools (before they overtook the island as pirates did). Settlers continued to bath there over the years until the island received running water (it is said to have health benefits).

The supermodel Tyra Banks famously did a photoshoot inside the caves during the 90’s and many people have tried to imitate the photo ever since. I’m telling you, it’s not easy to get the lighting right, those Sports Illustrated photographers really knew what they were doing.

The whole area is stunning. It’s like a mockup of the Seychelles, just sitting there, waiting to be photographed. Luckily, when we visited there were very few other people around. Large tours from cruise ships can frequent the Baths and can hold up the single file walking line (between rock caverns).

We could have spent the whole day there, just wandering around and swimming in the crystal clear water.

Snorkeling in the BVI’s

Our boat parked off Peter Island and was our snorkeling spot for the day. There was a lot of damage to the reefs around there and most of the coral was gone. The remaining fish seemed surprised to see us. We think that the snorkeling on St John is actually much better. Regardless, the water was beautiful and it was nice to swim in the clear, blue water.

Another popular spot for St John boat charters, is Norman Island where you can explore the Caves, the Indians, or the Aquarium. This island is famous for inspiring Robert Louis Stevenson’s book Treasure Island, and is home to the infamous Willy T’s floating bar and restaurant.

Jost Van Dyke day trip

Our last stop was Jost Van Dyke and it is what you’d expect a Virgin Island beach to look like. It was long, with white sand, palms trees, a couple of beach bars, and a bunch of catamarans parked offshore.

There was a mix-bag of people on the beach, some playing volleyball, most were drinking, but overall everyone was having the time of their lives.

By this point, the Bad Kitty crew were really loading the Painkiller cocktails on us (rum, orange and pineapple juice, coconut cream topped with fresh nutmeg). They’re sweet, but you’re in the Caribbean, so it works.

There’s also a local favorite bar called the Soggy Dollar. It’s everything that you want in a beach bar. Nautical themed and filled to the brim with rum.

Tips for Responsible Chartering

• Sun Protection : Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine life.
• Stay Hydrated : Bring a large reusable water bottle to minimize plastic use.
• Respect Wildlife : Observe marine life without disturbing their natural behaviors – don’t touch!
• Leave No Trace : Take back everything you bring, leaving beaches and waters as pristine as you found them.
• BYO reusables: Bring your own insulated reusable cups for drinks (when we visited, most of the charters/beach bars used plastic cups).
• Sail the seas: Sailing is the most sustainable way to visit the surrounding islands, however if you don’t have the time, then check which company aligns with your environment values most.

St John Boat Charters – Do it!

We had a blast on the boat trip. Leaving Cruz Bay on St John at 7:30am we didn’t return until nearly 6pm. So it was a long day. The sun and rum do take it out of you, but that’s nothing to complain about.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda is probably one of the nicest beaches we have ever been to. It’s uniquely picturesque and riddled with interesting hearsay history. If we were to go again, we would choose a charter that allowed us to spend more time at the baths, ideally being able to check if a cruise ship tour was going to be there, so we could avoid the crowds.

Overall it was an expensive day, but one that we will remember for a very long time (despite the rum’s side effects).

A: Inter island boat services offers a round trip ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay, to Virgin Gorda on Thursdays. The journey is approximately 90 minutes and costs $150 for a roundtrip.

I recently got the GoPro 10, specifically for boat days and snokeling exursions, and I am obsessed with it. It’s worth every penny.

POPULAR BVI ITINERARIES

The triangle.

This is a great taste of the BVI as a first time itinerary! A little bit of Jost, snorkeling and a pirate ship!

Start the day by checking in through customs at Great Harbor, Jost Van Dyke. Explore the sandy road for some light shopping and welcome drinks. Walk down to Foxy’s Tamarind restaurant for grab and drink and meet Foxy himself! He usually swinging in his hammock or greeting visitors with a song or some of his jokes! Or head to Corsairs for their famous bloody Marys.

Once checked in, you’ll make your way to White Bay, home to many world famous “must dos”. Drop anchor right at the water’s edge and swim to shore. Trust us, you won’t mind swimming, as the water doesn’t get better than this. Grab a Painkiller at Soggy Dollar, eat lunch and play giant jenga at Hendos, grab a hammock or just sit in a laid back Adirondack chair and take it all in. There is a reason why this beach is on most Travel lists, its simply like no other.

Other options for lunch at Jost would be Foxy’s Taboo or B-Line bar, a little less crowded and off the beaten path. Sandy Spit or Sandy Cay make for some picturesque photos (think Corona commercial-tiny sandy island). If weather permits, a hike to the bubbly pools is a must see!

Jost Van Dyke is only 3 miles, but it’s just one of those places that calls you back, again and again.

Next, you’ll head back through the Sir Francis Drake Channel to some snorkeling at the Indians or the Caves. The Indians consist of four pillars, underwater tunnels, abundant coral gardens and underwater caverns. Enjoy it from the surface for an easy snorkel or free dive down if you feel comfortable-great stop for everyone in the family! The Caves are full of treasure lore and spectacular snorkeling…keep your eyes peeled for something shiny!

Lastly, a stop in the BVI wouldn’t be complete without jumping off the Willy T, a floating pirate ship restaurant/bar!

SOGGY DOLLAR SPECIAL

This trip is all about JOST! It may be one of the smaller British Virgin Islands with a laid back vibe but it is full of rich history and charm. Spend the day exploring this gem!

Clear and customs and get straight to exploring. Choose from many world famous restaurants: Soggy Dollar Bar, Hendo’s HideOut, Foxy’s Tamarind Bar, Corsairs (bloody marys), BLine, Foxy’s Taboo and One Love. Sit under the palms and watch them dance, warm your toes in the fine white sand or enjoy a leisurely hike. Jost has it all!

Sitting just off the east end of Jost, stop by Sandy Cay, Green Cay or Sandy Spit. Uninhabited islands of white powdery sand and that picturesque Corona commercial photo op!

THE BATHS + ISLAND HOP

Journey up to Virgin Gorda to explore the BVI’s iconic and pristine rock formations, the Baths. Woven throughout the shoreline and winding into the island, these beautiful granite boulders create a show stopping tour of grottos, caves and tide pools that all ages can appreciate. Being the third largest BVI island, it maintains unspoiled beauty and a laid back atmosphere.

Head even further up the chain to the North Sound for exclusive islands and delicious restaurants. “Anchor your heart” at Saba Rock or enjoy the nautical village of Bitter End Yacht Club, both completely rebuilt after the 2017 storms.

As we make our way back to St. John, if time permits, enjoy pristine snorkeling on some of the stops on the way home, like Ginger, Cooper, Salt and Peter. Lastly, there is always Norman Island, home to theand the Caves +Indians.

Please be mindful that Virgin Gorda is roughly 30 miles from St. John and is not always accessible due to marine conditions. Safety and comfort is our number priority!

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

.Enjoy some of the lesser traveled BVI isles, just a stones throw away from St. John. Norman, Peter, Salt, Cooper and Ginger islands line south east side the Sir Francis Drake Channel and offer remote snorkeling, tales of piracy and more. A sailor’s ditty helps you remember their names, from west to east: “Norman and Peter give Salt to Cooper and Ginger”

Norman Island is famously known as “Treasure Island’, coined by Robert Louis Stevenson’s book. Home to the Caves, beautifully formed water caverns with schools of colorful fish and abundant coral, and the Bight, home to a large mooring field and the floating pirate ship, the Willy T.

Peter Island has palm tree lined beaches and home to a beautiful resort. Protected anchorages for snorkeling and just off to the east lies Dead Chest…more pirate lore!

Salt Island got its names because of the salt ponds! It’s rugged terrain was once inhabited to mine the low lying salt ponds, but now lies vacant. The wreck of the Rhone, an 1800’s British Mail Steamer, lies off its shores.

Cooper Island hosts one of our favorite lunch spots, Cooper Island Beach Club. An eco friendly resort, white sandy beach and easily accessible dock, this is a great stop with incredible snorkeling.

Ginger Island has a similar aesthetic to the Virgin Gorda’s baths, large boulder formation, but with less development and larger cliffs. Incredible snorkeling off its neighboring hot spot, Fallen Jerusalem.

We ended up taking the 7 hour sea turtle snorkel and sunset sail tour with Brandon and Amanda and had a freaking blast! The boat was beautiful, the trip was better than described and the crew showed us a fantastic time. 10/10 would recommend and we will absolutely be coming back! Thanks guys!

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. This was by far the highlight of our trip!! We got to see different islands and learn so much history about St John and St Thomas. The crew also had snorkel gear so we could snorkel each island we stopped at, we saw a sunken ship, sea turtles, stingrays. The crew was OUTSTANDING, Kenny and Susanna went above and beyond and made the best cocktails. This was such a wonderful experience!! Highly recommend stormy pirates. (I even changed my pick up from st Thomas to St. John and they were so accommodating)

What a way to spend a day. Met the crew at the dock, jumped on the boat, and had the time of our lives for the day. A couple of snorkel stops, a little sightseeing of the beautiful island of St. John, and then lunch at Lime Out Taco Bar. Lime Out was an excellent experience floating in the clear water surrounded by a beautiful area and eating some great tacos. This was my second trip with Stormy Pirates, and I brought the entire family as my first trip with them was great. Thanks to the crew for making this a day to remember.

We had an amazing time on their Sale Pending 2 boat. Captain Rich was funny and a really good Captain, we knew we were in good hands and safe. Tara, the crew member was so authentically attentive and caring. We had drinks all day long, sodas, water, punch, cocktails. They had fruit and muffins waiting, a scheduled pizza delivery on the boat, snorkeling equipment and the knowledge the guests needed to find sea creatures. So many small detailed extras to make the day superb!

Inter Island Boat Services made the trip from Cruz Bay St.John to Crown Bay St. Thomas lovely and easy. So much better than a 30 minute cab ride across St. Thomas. It drops you less than 10 minutes from the airport.

We landed at a perfect time to catch a ride to Stj. We reserved tickets on line as we landed in STT. Hopped a taxi and 5 min later we arrived a Crown Bay. They immediately put our bags on, we went a grabbed a painkiller while we waited til we could board. So friendly.

The crew does a great job of communicating expectations to ravelers, helping them on and off the boat with their luggage and belongings. These guys work hard!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Jost van Dyke on the Inter Island Ferry. The online booking process was easy, staff was friendly and we had a smooth ride there and back. We were so happy that we could escape for a day to the BVI after a long pause due to covid.

Great service to and from Crown Bay. Close to airport and much better than going all the way to Red Hook. Also used them for Jost Van Dyke day trip that was fantastic! Easy location in Cruz Bay and easy to book and pay for online.

The Virgin Islands are the western island group of the Leeward Islands, which are the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, and form the border between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. They are located about 80 km east of Puerto Rico, which is 1500km South East of Florida. Christopher Columbus named the islands after Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins (Spanish: Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Vírgenes), shortened to the Virgins.

Politically, the eastern islands form the British Virgin Islands , short BVI (Tortola, Jost van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Anegada) and the western ones form the Virgin Islands of the United States , short USVI (St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix). That’s actually the only annoying part, when paddling / island hopping, you need to take your passport checking in and out between US and UK Customs & Border Protection.     The currency is US$ and   Motor vehicles are driven on the left-hand side of the road in both the British and the U.S. Virgin Islands, although the steering wheels on most cars are located on the left side (as is the norm for drive-on-the-right localities).

Useful Virgin Island Information

Water / toilets.

• It is not recommended to drink the tap water  you can get really sick from it. Buy Gallons of drinking water at Starfish or Dolphin Market, and then you can refill them for 60cents at the water machine just before the Tamarind Hotel.
• Water is collected rain water from cistern. It is a precious good, especially during dry season. Be mindful of it, don’t take long showers or keep it running. Many toilets bear a sign asking you not to flush for “number one”
• Don’t throw the toilet paper into the toilet, put it in the bin next to the toilet!

Mosquitos are the most single annoying thing on the island. The stings itch and can also infect you with diseases. The mosquitos in the Virgin islands are mean, they sneak up on you and will sting you before you notice them. Bring bug spray, or long pants to cover up.

Power Outages

There is no Power Plant on St. John. The power comes through a giant cable in the ocean through Pillsbury Sound from St. Thomas. Power outages are frequent and are sometimgs caused by Iguanas touching lines or dropping down on transformers. They usually only last a few minutes but it can be hours or days as well. Having torches and candles ready and a solar charger for your phone is always a good idea!

Local customs

When entering a store or business, it is considered very rude if you just jump right into asking a question or say what you want. Always start with “Good morning”, “Good Day”, “Good Afternoon” or “Good Evening” and a few nice words

Island time

Slow down. Everything is on “island time”. Do not expect the same efficiency as back home. “5 minutes” island time can be anything from 15 minutes to hours. When sending a business enquiry via email, do not expect an immediate response. Many business owners work multiple jobs, especially during low season or there simply just might not be internet or power on that day.
