25 Most Watched TV Shows of All Time

10 of the most violent and brutal tv shows of all time, every season of outlander, ranked from worst to best.

Before James T. Kirk took the Enterprise on its famous "five-year mission," the legendary Federation starship was under the command of Christopher Pike for over a decade. Pike's time in the captain's chair, however, came to a tragic end, as The Original Series episodes "The Menagerie, Parts I and II" (1966) showed. Pike's backstory is now being told in the prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which premiered on the Paramount+ streaming service in 2022. A second season premiered in June 2023, and a third season is planned for 2024.

Set seven years before Captain Kirk took command of the Enterprise, Strange New Worlds has connected with fans by embracing the adventurous spirit of The Original Series starring William Shatner and the late Leonard Nimoy. Strange New Worlds is actually a spinoff of the prequel series Star Trek: Discovery, as Pike (Anson Mount) and the Enterprise crew first appeared throughout Season 2 of the series , which aired in 2019. Pike is joined by Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) and First Officer "Number One" (Rebecca Romijn) as they boldly travel the galaxy in the early days of the United Federation of Planets.

Following is a breakdown of the main characters of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and the actors who play them.

Christopher Pike (Anson Mount)

Christopher Pike was captain of the USS Enterprise prior to James T. Kirk taking command. Pike is a dedicated officer, although he is often brash and acts unconventionally. In the first episode of Strange New Worlds , we find Pike on an extended shore leave, having commanded the Enterprise for nearly a decade. The episode takes place after the second season of Star Trek: Discovery , where he and the Enterprise crew assisted the Discovery on a mission, even taking command of the ship for a short time.

During the Discovery mission, however, Pike was given a disturbing look into his own future, where he saw several Starfleet cadets killed, and he was horribly injured and disfigured. Pike then becomes obsessed with finding a way of changing the future, to save the lives of the cadets and escape his fate. The vision of his future also made him more committed to his crew and his mission, determined to make a difference, if his time was indeed short.

Illinois native Anson Mount had his first professional acting role in a 1999 episode of Ally McBeal . He went on to star in a number of films and TV series, including Smallville , Lost , Safe , and Conviction . He played the lead character of Cullen Bohannon on AMC's Hell on Wheels , and most recently appeared as the Marvel Comics hero Black Bolt in both the Inhumans TV series and the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness .

Spock (Ethan Peck)

The half-human, half-Vulcan Spock was an officer aboard the Enterprise well before the Kirk era. He joined the crew as an ensign but quickly rose through the ranks to eventually become Captain Pike's science officer. Spock became an invaluable member of the Enterprise crew, even if his commission in Starfleet caused problems for his Vulcan family and peers. He turned down an invitation to join the Vulcan Science Academy, where the teachers found his human side to be an impediment.

Spock had an adopted sister, Michael Burnham, who also joined Starfleet and served on the USS Discovery. During a mission in which the Enterprise and Discovery crews worked together to stop a future catastrophe, Burnham and the Discovery crew went into the future, leaving Spock behind. Losing her forever affected Spock deeply.

Ethan Peck is the grandson of legendary actor Gregory Peck and had his first major acting role at the age of nine. He would go on to appear in the films The Sorcerer's Apprentice , In Time , and The Midnight Sky . His TV roles include That '70s Show , Gossip Girl , and Madam Secretary . He first portrayed the Spock character on Star Trek: Discovery before appearing on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn)

Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley serves aboard Enterprise as Captain Pike's first officer, who usually refers to her as "Number One." She is also hiding a deep secret: she is an Illyrian, a genetically engineered race, which made her ineligible to serve in Starfleet. She lied about her birthplace on her application to Starfleet Academy, as it was her dream to serve in the Federation. As an ensign, she was part of a Starfleet away team that rescued a young La'an Noonien-Singh after the Gorn killed her family.

Una rose through the ranks of Starfleet quickly and eventually was assigned to the USS Enterprise as a science officer. After Christopher Pike became captain, she was promoted to first officer. Pike would eventually learn Una's secret but did not turn her in, out of his deep respect for her as an officer and a friend.

Prior to Strange New Worlds , Rebecca Romijn was best known for playing Mystique in four of the X-Men films. The former model also appeared in the TNT series The Librarians , Ugly Betty , Rollerball , and The Punisher , with Thomas Jane.

La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong)

Lieutenant La'an Noonien Singh is a descendant of the murderous revolutionary Khan Noonien-Singh, and in her youth, was often bullied for it . When she was a child, she was the only survivor of a Gorn attack on her colony that killed her entire family. She was later rescued, with the help of then-Ensign Una Chin-Riley. She joined Starfleet and was assigned to the Enterprise crew as Una's replacement as First Officer (as seen in the first episode), joining the mission to rescue her from planet Kiley 279. After the mission, Captain Pike offered her the role of the ship's security officer, a perfect match with her blunt, by-the-book demeanor.

British actress Christina Chong is also a singer and attended the prestigious Italia Conti Academy in England. Her film and TV credits include Doctor Who , 24: Live Another Day , and Halo: Nightfall . She nearly appeared in another major sci-fi franchise, as she was cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens , but her scenes were deleted.

Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding)

Uhura, like Spock, began her service on Enterprise before Kirk took command. In the first episode of Strange New Worlds , Uhura has just been assigned to Enterprise as a communications officer, in part because of her unique ability to learn and speak dozens of languages. Although she is initially unsure if a career in Starfleet is right for her, she quickly bonds with her fellow crew members, and her destiny aboard the Enterprise is set.

Celia Rose Gooding is a Broadway veteran, having earned a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical in 2020. Strange New Worlds is her first on-screen acting role.

Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun)

Dr. M'Benga is the Chief Medical Officer aboard the Enterprise. He has served in Starfleet for many years, including during the Federation-Klingon War, prior to his Enterprise assignment. He and Pike were acquaintances, so they got along well once he was assigned to his command. He has a young daughter, Rukiya, who suffers from cygnokemia, a terminal disease with no cure. M'Benga secretly kept Rukiya in stasis by keeping her in Enterprise's transporter buffer, so the disease didn't progress.

Babs Olusanmokun had his first American acting role in a 2007 episode of the CBS series The Unit . He went on to appear on the TV series Gotham , The Blacklist , Marvel's The Defenders , and the miniseries Roots . He also appeared in the films Wrath of Man and Dune until he was cast in Strange New Worlds , his most high-profile role to date. He is also a third-degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia)

Lieutenant Erica Ortegas pilots the Enterprise, and is highly regarded for her skill. She actually hopes to see more action on away missions and relishes the chance to join one. She and Nurse Chapel are close friends.

Strange New Worlds is the biggest role to date for actress Melissa Navia . Her previous credits include Bull , Dietland , Billions , and Homeland . Her Twitter account is quite popular among fans, as she is not afraid to comment on controversial subjects.

Christine Chapel (Jess Bush)

Nurse Chapel joined the Enterprise crew in the first episode of Strange New Worlds , as part of a civilian exchange program. Despite their cultural differences, she and Spock make a personal connection, even though he is betrothed to the Vulcan T'Pring. Although both Chapel and Spock try to keep things professional, eventually, their affections come to the surface in an unusual display of emotion for Spock. Chapel would continue to serve on Enterprise after James Kirk took command.

Australian model and actress Jess Bush rose to fame on the reality series Australia's Next Top Model . She later appeared in the series Home and Away and Playing for Keeps . Strange New Worlds is her breakthrough role.

Hemmer (Bruce Horak)

Hemmer is the Enterprise's chief engineer and is first seen in the second episode of the series. He is blind, but dislikes being labeled as having a disability, and his other senses have become more attuned to compensate. He is no-nonsense and opinionated, and his blunt, often sarcastic responses don't go over very well with many.

Early in his career, Canadian actor Bruce Horak had minor roles in Warehouse 13 and In the Dark . Like the character he portrays, Horak is legally blind, having lost 90% of his sight to childhood cancer. He is the first legally blind actor to play a major role in the Star Trek franchise.

George Samuel "Sam" Kirk (Dan Jeannotte)

Lieutenant Sam Kirk is a science officer who serves aboard the Enterprise under Captain Pike and Mr. Spock. He is also the brother of Captain Kirk, although he transferred to a science colony before his brother became captain. During his time on Enterprise, he was a valuable member of the crew, often accompanying the officers on away missions. Like his brother, he has the signature Kirk swagger.

Dan Jeannotte has had major roles in the series Reign , The Good Witch , and The Bold Type . He also toured extensively with the comedy troupe Uncalled For.

Jenna Mitchell (Rong Fu)

Lieutenant Jenna Mitchell serves as the navigator on the Enterprise, often serving alongside pilot Lt. Ortegas. Rong Fu began acting professionally immediately after graduating from York University in 2012, appearing in an episode of Warehouse 13 . The Chinese-born Fu also appeared on the series American Gothic , the CW's Beauty and the Beast , American Gods , and Good Sam .

T'Pring (Gia Sandhu)

Spock's fiancé T'Pring has been betrothed to him since they were children. Her mother, however, disapproves of the marriage, and her overbearing nature complicates their relationship. T'Pring serves as a counselor to Vulcans who have committed crimes because they could not control their emotions, hoping to lead them back to a life of pure logic. She and Spock share a long-distance relationship because of their respective careers.

Gia Sandhu is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. She has had roles in the series The Mysterious Benedict Society , Heartland , Nikita , and Kim's Convenience . She also appeared in the films A Simple Favor and A Perfect Plan .

Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano)

Captain Batel commands the USS Cayuga and also serves in the Judge Advocate General's office for Starfleet. She is having a secret romantic relationship with Captain Pike, although their assignments often keep them apart. Their relationship becomes strained when one of Pike's crew is court-martialed, and Batel is assigned as the prosecuting counsel.

Melanie Scrofano is best known for playing the lead role in the SyFy series Wynonna Earp . She has also appeared in the films Ready or Not , The Silencing , and the series Designated Survivor .

James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley)

James T. Kirk would eventually command the USS Enterprise, but during the events of Strange New Worlds , he is a lieutenant serving elsewhere. He appears in Strange New Worlds in episodes involving time travel and alternate timelines. Paul Wesley has joined an exclusive group of actors who have portrayed the iconic Captain Kirk , including William Shatner and Chris Pine. The New Jersey native is best known for his role as Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries .

Pelia (Carol Kane)

Pelia, who appears in the second season of the series, is a Lanthanite, a species that looks human but can live impossibly long lives. Although she currently serves as a Starfleet inspector, the Enterprise crew discovers her true identity and her habit of collecting priceless treasures throughout history.

Carol Kane is an iconic actress who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1976 for the film Hester Street . She appeared as Valerie in the classic film The Princess Bride and also appeared in the series Taxi and the films Scrooged and The Addams Family .

Captain D'Chok (Andrew Jackson)

D'Chok is a Klingon captain the Enterprise crew encounters in the first episode of the second season, "The Broken Circle." His character is notable, as he depicts the Klingons as they appeared in the original series and films, but changed with the J.J. Abrams reboot of the franchise.

Andrew Jackson has an acting career spanning more than thirty years. His other acting credits include over 200 episodes of All My Children as Dr. Stephen Hamill. He also appeared in The Boys and Dark Matter .

Captain Angel/Dr. Aspen (Jesse James Keitel)

Captain Angel is a pirate who used their ship, the Serene Squall, to raid outposts along the Federation border. Angel assumed the identity of Doctor Aspen, a Federation medical officer, to gain access to the Enterprise in order to steal the ship and kidnap Mr. Spock. Angel intended to trade Spock for their lover, who turned out to be Spock's half-brother Sybok, who was being held by the Vulcans and Spock's fiancé T'Pring.

Jesse James Keitel has also appeared in Queer as Folk and in 25 episodes of ABC's Big Sky , becoming the first transgender actor in a major ABC television role.

Amanda Grayson (Mia Kirshner)

Amanda Grayson is Spock's mother and the wife of Sarek. She, more than anyone, understands Spock's dual nature and supports his life decisions, even if his Vulcan peers do not. Mia Kirshner has appeared in 24 , The Crow: City of Angels , Defiance , and Not Another Teen Movie . She also portrayed Amanda Grayson on Star Trek: Discovery .

Robert April (Adrian Holmes)

Admiral Robert April is Captain Pike's superior officer and friend. He was supportive of him taking time off after he learned of his future but demanded he come back to service to lead a mission to rescue Number One when she is captured on a distant planet (as seen in the series' first episode). The character first appeared in Star Trek: The Animated Series in the 1970s.

Adrian Holmes appeared in the films Cabin in the Woods , Skyscraper , and Elysium . He also appeared as Uncle Phil in the Peacock Fresh Prince reboot Bel-Air .

Rukiya (Sage Arrindell)

Rukiya is Dr. M'Benga's daughter. She suffers from cygnokemia, a terminal disease with no known cure. In order to prolong her life, her father keeps her in stasis in the transporter buffer of the Enterprise, so the disease does not progress while he searches for a cure. Sage Arrindell has also appeared in the series Chucky and The Odd Squad and provides a voice for the animated series Paw Patrol .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2

The adventures of the USS Enterprise didn’t start with James T Kirk. Star Trek : Strange New Worlds is set around a decade before he embarked on the most famous five-year mission in TV history, and puts his predecessor – Christopher Pike – back in the captain’s chair.

Pike first appeared in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’ back in 1966, but it was his comeback in Star Trek: Discovery’s second season (where he was played by Anson Mount) that earned him his own spin-off show. Pike and fellow ‘Cage’ veterans Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn) and Spock (Ethan Peck inheriting the role made famous by Leonard Nimoy) proved so popular with fans that Paramount Plus decided to make Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the latest addition to Trek’s rapidly expanding shared universe .

And when it launches later this year, the show will feature a few more iconic names from the ’60s, including Nurse Chapel, Dr M’Benga and a genuine Trek legend in the form of Uhura. There’s also a mysterious crew member called La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname has a special resonance for fans of the final frontier.

With producers promising less serialized storytelling than Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks set to get back to the cosmos-exploring traditions of the Original Series and The Next Generation. Here’s everything we know so far – hit it!

What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first officer Una Chin-Riley (better known as Number One) on the USS Enterprise, around a decade before James T Kirk takes command.

Release date: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will beam onto Paramount Plus on May 5, 2022 – after Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and Star Trek: Picard season 2 have finished boldly going.

Cast: Alongside its familiar trio of lead characters (still played by Discovery's Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn), six new crew members will be taking their places on the Enterprise bridge. Read more about them below.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date

Star trek: strange new worlds release date: may 2022.

It's so long ago that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds got its greenlight (May 2020) that Paramount Plus was still known as CBS All Access at the time.

Unfortunately, coronavirus significantly delayed its departure from Spacedock, and the show didn't make it in front of the cameras until March 2021. Production on Strange New Worlds' 10-episode first season eventually wrapped in October 2021, as confirmed in a video announcement from star Anson Mount:

Now the wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is almost over. StarTrek.com confirmed on January 18, 2022 that the new voyages of the USS Enterprise will boldly go onto Paramount Plus in the US on Thursday May 5, 2022 – coinciding with the conclusion of Starfleet stablemate Picard's second season.

Jess Bush, who'll play Nurse Christine Chapel in the show, celebrated the announcement by posing in one of the Enterprise's Jefferies Tubes with co-star Christina Chong (La'an Noonien-Singh).

While we know Strange New Worlds will stream on Paramount Plus in the US, it may vary depending on where you are. The streamer is set to launch in the UK in 2022, and we'd expect to see Strange New Worlds debuting on there – especially after the recent controversial announcement that Discovery's fourth season has been shifted from its traditional international home on Netflix, to help launch Paramount Plus around the world.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer

Is there a star trek: strange new worlds trailer.

There's no sign as yet, but with less than three months until the series' launch, it can't be long until we get to see a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer. Indeed, with Star Trek: Discovery returning from its mid-season break and Picard's second season kicking off in early March, Paramount have a pair of tentpoles they can hang a promo off.

That said, journalists at the show's Television Critics Association panel on February 1, 2022 were treated to first-look footage focussing on Cadet Nyota Uhura (played by Celia Rose Gooding), the character made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the Original Series. Den of Geek reported that most of the bridge crew were also accounted for in the clip.

Back in September 2021, the Star Trek Day event also unveiled a brief teaser introducing the cast. It contains a few stills from the new series, including a glimpse at the new-look USS Enterprise uniforms – a modern riff on the classic gold, blue and uniforms we saw in ’The Cage’ and the original series.

Going back even further in time, leads Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn beamed in an announcement video in May 2020:

As you’d expect, the party line was very much that the show exists because of fan demand. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening,” says Peck, while Mount explains a bit about the tone of the series. “[It’s] a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster: the frontier is waiting

While Paramount are keeping us waiting for a trailer, the tantalizing new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster is doing more than enough to get us excited about the show. It features Captain Pike on horseback in what looks like his home in the Mojave desert – but the real excitement comes from what's in the sky above him. The iconic USS Enterprise is hovering in front of a pair of alien worlds – and, no doubt, several new life forms and new civilizations.

If the "The frontier is waiting" tagline isn't enough to get Trek fans firing up their warp drives, chances are nothing will.

A post shared by Star Trek (@startrek) A photo posted by on

“We wanted [the poster] to reflect that the [concept] of the final frontier is at just the beginning,” executive producer (and Star Trek's de facto commander-in-chief) Alex Kurtzman told the show's TCA panel (via Syfy ) . “We think it brings the sense of nostalgia hope, optimism, exploration and sense of adventure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

Star trek: strange new worlds cast: who’s beaming onto the enterprise bridge.

The principal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast looks like this:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Mr Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Lt Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr M'Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Hemmer

Ever since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was confirmed in 2020, we've known that three actors would be reprising their roles from Discovery.

Anson Mount is back in the captain’s chair as Captain Christopher Pike. Meanwhile, after proving himself worthy of donning the pointy ears that once belonged to Leonard Nimoy, Ethan Peck returns as Spock. Rebecca Romijn continues as first officer/helmsperson Number One.

A ‘start of production’ video released in March 2021 introduced five other members of the cast:

The five new additions to the USS Enterprise bridge crew are Melissa Navia (from Dietland), Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill), Christina Chong (Doctor Who, Line of Duty), Babs Olusanmokun (Black Mirror), and Jess Bush (Skinford).

At the Star Trek Day panel in September 2021, it was finally confirmed who each of them would be playing.  We also learned that the full name of Number One is Una Chin-Riley – the first time this has been confirmed in the character’s 56-year history.

Intriguingly, three of the new cast members are playing characters who – like, Pike, Number One and Spock – were first established in the 1960s.

The most famous of these roles goes to Celia Rose Gooding, who plays a younger version of Nyota Uhura, the Enterprise communications officer famously portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the original series and first six Star Trek movies. (Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana took on the role in JJ Abrams' rebooted Trek.)

Gooding explained to the assembled journalists at the TCA event in February 2021 that this will be a much less experienced version of the communications officer we saw serving alongside Captain Kirk in the Original series.

“Nichelle had a level of understanding and clarity [in her portrayal], but we're showing different parts of her humanity, which isn't as sure and asks questions as we go along,” the actress explained. “Getting to represent an iconic character in a multi-faceted way is an honor and now we're getting to see other sides of Uhura that go outside of the limitations set for Black women in the '60s."

Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr M'Benga (originally played by Booker Bradshaw), a character who filled in as the Enterprise's chief medical officer when Dr McCoy was absent in the original series. Jess Bush, meanwhile, inherits the role of Nurse Christine Chapel, who worked alongside McCoy in the Enterprise Sick Bay.

Chapel is one of two Strange New Worlds characters who were originally played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry back in the 1960s – the other is Number One, who made her one-and-only vintage Trek appearance in 'The Cage'. (Barrett-Roddenberry also went on to play Lwaxana Troi and voice the Enterprise computers in The Next Generation.)

Of the Starfleet newbies, Bruce Horak's Hemmer is a member of the Andorian species. The fact he's wearing a red shirt – aka Star Trek's sartorial kiss of death – doesn't bode well for his life expectancy. The same could be said for Melissa Navia's Lt Erica Ortegas.

The most mysterious addition to the cast, however, is Christina Chong's La'an Noonien-Singh. The fact she shares a surname with The Wrath of Khan's Big Bad can't be a coincidence, but seeing as Trek canon tells us the cryogenically frozen 20th century villain won't be thawed out until after Kirk has taken command of the Enterprise, it's unclear how they're linked – but there definitely is a connection.

"She's related to Khan for sure, and, uh, the deal will unfold...” co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed at a Television Critics Association panel in February 2022 (via the Hollywood Reporter ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already has its first great mystery...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds story

What can we expect to see in the star trek: strange new worlds story.

Star Trek: Discovery spoilers ahead – proceed with caution if you haven't seen season 2.

Pike, Spock and Number One have been part of the Star Trek story even longer than James T Kirk – they were on board the Enterprise in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’, unaired in the ’60s and set more than a decade before Kirk’s famous five-year mission. Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett originated the three roles.

While we know that the trio have been together at least three years by the time Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off and that a tragic fate awaits Pike – more on that later – most of their voyages remain undocumented. That means it’s prime storytelling territory and – after the more serialized Discovery and Picard – a chance for Trek to get back to the standalone stories of its earlier years.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” executive producer Akiva Goldsman (and director of the Strange New Worlds pilot episode) told Variety in May 2020. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”

The ability to visit a huge galaxy of, well, strange new worlds, should allow the show to feel different from week to week – after all, this versatile formula is a big reason for the franchise’s longevity.

“We want to do Star Trek in the classic mode; Star Trek in the way Star Trek stories were always told,” fellow EP Henry Alonso Myers said at a Star Trek Day panel (via TrekMovie ). “It's a ship and it's traveling to strange new worlds and we are going to tell big ideas science fiction adventures in an episodic mode. So we have room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures..."

Strange New Worlds won't be entirely devoid of serialization, however, as writer Akela Cooper explained: “While we'll have individual one-off plots, the character arcs are what's going to carry us through in a more serialized fashion. There's probably one point that we will be sprinkling through this series until we actually get to the episode. And that's all I can say about that.”

Goldsman explained a bit more about the structure of the show in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in April: “If you think back to the original [Star Trek] series, it was tonally more liberal – I don‘t mean in terms of politics but it could sort of be more fluid. Like sometimes Robert Bloch would write a horror episode. Or Harlan Ellison would have ‘City on the Edge of Forever’, which is hard sci-fi. Then there would be comedic episodes like 'Shore Leave’ or ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’. So [co-showrunner] Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that. We’ve all become very enamored, myself included, with serialized storytelling. Picard is deeply serialized but Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week, but with serialized character arcs.”

Strange New Worlds

Going on Mount’s performance in Discovery, Pike is the ideal captain for an optimistic mission of exploration.

“The writers have done a magnificent job of establishing this captain as his own iteration of what a Starfleet captain should be, independent of other captains in canon,” the actor said at the TCA panel (as reported by Syfy ). “Humility is a big part of his character. And his father was a science teacher and scholar of comparative religion, so exploration is a big part of Pike. He’s looking at the things that made us see what’s next over the horizon? Are we searchers or conquerors?”

We can also expect to see a Spock more prone to displays of emotion than his Original Series counterpart, as the younger version of the character struggles to balance his logical Vulcan side with his human urges.

Indeed, in ‘The Cage’, Number One was the more buttoned-up, logical member of the crew – her personality traits passing to the Vulcan when Star Trek went to series. “She's way more complex than y'all know,” actor Rebecca Romijn teased in the cast introduction video released on Star Trek Day, and she expanded on the theme in the panel.

“'The Cage' being such an old pilot, the writers have this very unique opportunity where they've had this character that's existed since the beginning of the canon, but she's never been written,” Romijn pointed out. “I can't wait to find out how vast her skill set is. What are the arrows in her quiver? My number one question is, 'What's her backstory?’ [The writer's room] floated an idea for Number One's backstory that I'm not going to share right now because it blew my mind when they said it.”

Despite being made more than half a century after the Original Series, the look of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will echo those early ’60s designs – from the Enterprise starship interiors to the Starfleet uniforms.

“It’s a fine line because, obviously, we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show,” Goldsman told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs [to the Original Series] and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember, the Enterprise existed as a little piece [of Star Trek: Discovery], but now it’s its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of the Original Series, that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Intriguingly, at this point in the Star Trek timeline , Kirk and other members of the original crew must be out there somewhere in the universe, so the smart money would be on a few headline-grabbing (recast) guest appearances – as the older members of the Original Series line-up, McCoy and Scotty would seem prime candidates.

If a few familiar faces do turn up, however, we may have to wait a while to see them, with Goldsman telling the TCA panel that bringing classic characters back into the fray isn't a priority.

“We’re starting wth this crew and don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy,” he said. “We want to dig deeply into the characters in this ensemble. We’re open to widening our arms, but right now, and this is said in the best possible way, what you see is what you get."

Perhaps the biggest elephant on the Enterprise bridge, however, is Pike’s tragic story…

When we meet him in Original Series two-parter ‘The Menagerie’, it’s revealed that he’s been left severely disabled by a radiation leak. In Discovery, he’s forced to endure a vision of that future, so it'll be intriguing to see how that knowledge preys on his mind, and how much it plays into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ story.

“The most honest thing I can say is, I'm still figuring out,” Mount explained at Star Trek Day. “Pike didn't just learn how he dies, he learns in what circumstances. So we do know that at some point he's going to be presented with a promotion opportunity to Fleet Captain. And he has to accept that in order for the fate to come into existence. So what is it that's going to allow him, both in terms of circumstance and emotion, to accept that promotion? It's a tough question but I think we'll figure it out together.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is already confirmed

The show hasn't even aired yet and Strange New Worlds: season 2 has already been confirmed by Paramount Plus via StarTrek.com . In fact, the streaming service is so engaged by the prospect of a follow-up season that it's already shooting – one journalist at Strange New Worlds' TCA panel on February 1, 2022 noted that Ethan Peck was wearing his Vulcan ears and costume because he was already working on the new season.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Cast Introduces the Enterprise Crew

Ethan Peck as Spock, Anson Mount as Pike and Rebecca Romijn as Una in Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Where No One Has Gone Before

For exclusive news and updates, subscribe to our star trek: strange new worlds newsletter :.

It’s been over three years since we met Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck’s Science Officer Spock, and Rebecca Romijn’s Number One on Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, and now they’re back in their own series, the latest Paramount+ series that definitely lives up to (very high) expectations.

When  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds begins, Pike is wrestling with the fate he saw that awaits him, one akin to death. “We knew that we couldn’t really get into the nitty gritty of the show unless we dealt head-on with that very real experience,” Mount tells TV Insider. “Given the choice of seeing that and not seeing that, I think most people would choose to not see that. How do you live with that? How is that going to affect you, especially when someone is in charge of hundreds of other lives? Can he trust his own instincts? Can he trust that he’s going to be able to put that out of his mind and then later on, is that perhaps maybe a quality that could make him a better captain?”

The events of the other  Star Trek series also greatly affected Spock, who will never see his sister, Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ), again after she led  Discovery into the future. While she is “an emotional touchstone” for Spock, he “has a great ability to compartmentalize his feelings, less so as we get into it with this show, because he is struggling between his emotional and logical sides, between his human and Vulcan sides,” Peck says. Expect to see “a searching Spock,” one who is “searching for himself” when  Strange New Worlds begins. According to Peck, “that will be a theme for this character throughout the duration of the series.”

As for Number One since we last saw her, she “is not very good at downtime,” Romijn shares. “Turns out Una doesn’t ever take downtime. She gets herself into some trouble. So while everybody else has been taking their downtime [since we last saw them], she’s gone off and needs a little bit of help getting herself out of a bind.”

On the  Enterprise , these three will be joined by characters both familiar and new to  Star Trek , some also with things from their past they must face. Among the familiar is Nyota Uhura. “One of the greater challenges that she’s dealing with is the idea of belonging and putting down roots somewhere,” Celia Rose Gooding says of her character. “We find Uhura at a point where she doesn’t really know if the Enterprise and Starfleet is for her and she’s trying not to do too much to sort of plant down roots. She’s just trying to get through and fill her days with something instead of sitting and stewing and dealing with the loss that she’s experienced in her life. She’s fighting the human instinct to want to connect, but she doesn’t want to connect to the point where it’s gonna hurt if she decides to depart.” Expect to see her looking to Chief of security La’an Noonien-Singh ( Christina Chong ) as a “beacon” in Season 1.

La’an is dealing with “her childhood trauma,” Chong previews. “She’s coming face to face literally with the demons that that took away her family and everyone she loved. She’s also learning how to open up her heart and to live rather than just survive. [She’s] trusting that just because in the past, having family, they then die for her, that isn’t necessarily going to be the case [with her new family on the bridge].” While she’ll be connecting with everyone, Una is like “an older sister” and “Pike is helping her to grow and evolve.” You will see her “have her version of fun.”

Speaking of fun, Lt. Erica Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ), the pilot of the  Enterprise is definitely having some. In Season 1, “you see these layers and more and more to her. You see that she’s a combat veteran, you see her fighting skills, you see that she’s an incredibly confident, skilled pilot,” Navia says. “And then you start to see some of those emotions, but she’s wonderful in that she’s been through a lot and you know she’s been through a lot, but she doesn’t really wear that on her sleeve. But she’s also not hiding anything.” She gets along well with everyone, but especially Pike. “There just needs to be so much trust between the pilot and the captain, and you get to see some really great banter between the two of us and you get to see how much we trust each other,” she notes.

Jess Bush as Chapel and Babs Olusanmokun as M’Benga in Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Dr. M’Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) are in sick bay. That is “our domain, our home, which we welcome a lot of people into with open arms,” Bush says. “It’s been such a delightful process of discovery, developing our relationship as characters, ‘cause obviously we are quite close in the way that we work, we support each other, and there’s a lot of care and a lot of trust between us, both personally and professionally. It’s been such a joy to, at once, develop a friendship with Babs offscreen and then meet as characters and see the nuances and the differences in our relationship as characters. We run a tight ship, but a warm ship in the sick bay.”

Olusanmokun agrees. “We just get a chance to play, and we keep it really connected and empathetic and stay on top of the job of taking care of people in that sick bay,” he says.

Interviews — STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Cast Share New Character Insights Ahead of the Series’ Launch

Connect with trekcore.

While the days tick down to the arrival of  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , we’ve been sharing moments from our mid-April interviews with the series’ cast on our social media channels — where TrekCore, along with a group of other media outlets, had an opportunity to chat with the actors over video about the new series.

If you’ve not been following us on Twitter , on Facebook , or on YouTube , here’s a roundup of the best moments of discussion from the  Strange New Worlds cast to catch you up!

(Start following us on socials if you aren’t yet, as new video content like this will often debut there first!)

Anson Mount describes how his character, Captain Christopher Pike, leads the USS Enterprise crew after learning of his own future:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMyfjeAJ9vE

“You know, we got to see him lead a crew that was not his own on ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ and now we get to see him and lead his own crew — and I really wanted to flesh out that tremendous sense of empathy I think he has, which is it goes hand in hand with humility. I think that’s partly what makes him such a good leader and captain. Every time a crew member walks through the doors of his office, the most important thing in the room is not Pike. It’s not even necessarily the question. It’s the crew member. He has to care about them above and beyond his own sense of self. That’s why his existential crisis at the beginning of the series is not his own fear of death. I t’s ‘Can I remain, can I continue to serve as a captain when I’m dealing with this? Am I going to be able to be responsible for hundreds of people who serve under me dealing with this crisis?’ And how do we, as people telling the story, find a way through that, not ignore that, but find a way through that that leads into further development of the character?”

Mount describes his excitement over recording the iconic  “Space, the final frontier…” monologue for the series’ opening credits:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GojKnB1uQwM

“I knew I wanted to do that speech! I knew it like I knew I wanted to eat — so I was very grateful when [showrunners Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman] told me I would be doing it. We kind of did it on the fly, on set, as a temp track for the editing process, but I really wanted to make sure I got it right. So they sent a bunch of equipment to my place in Connecticut to set up basically a sound studio in my basement. I was there recording while our tech guy was in New York and our post-production crew was in Los Angeles, all networked. We’re slogging this out, doing many, many takes: combining a sentence from this take, a sentence from that take, making sure everything is sounding the way we want, doing several versions. This is back in October, and there was a moment when I said, ‘Guys, can we just take a moment here and acknowledge the fact that we are going to remember this moment for the rest of our lives?’ I mean, it is a very, very select group of people who have the privilege to work on this speech. Everyone was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, that’s really cool!’ There was a pause, and I said, ‘Of course… you realize right now William Shatner is in orbit.’ It was also a good lesson for me: don’t ever try to out-do Shatner!”

Rebecca Romijn talks about her character Una Chin-Riley (“Number One”), her relationship with Starfleet colleague La’an Noonien-Singh… and a secret the Enterprise first officer is hiding.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxKWyyA2ang

“La’an is like a protégé. Una saved her life early on. You’re going to see more about La’an’s backstory. And I think Una is very protective of La’an, and she knows that La’an had this really horrible childhood and wants to help her find levity, wants to help her find some light in the universe. She’s sort of taken her on as like a lifelong personal project. I think she adores her. No one loves the stars more than Una. No one loves Starfleet more than Una. And she is extremely good at what she does. And in what we learn about her in episode three, we find that she’s hiding something, and she sort of hides behind meticulous work, and she is slightly intimidating to the rest of the crew to keep her distance so that nobody finds out the secret that she’s hiding. The writers floated this idea to me pretty early on, and I just thought it was such an incredible layer to the character, and we’re going to keep exploring that in a pretty major way throughout the season. Una was kind of a real mystery — until now.”

Romijn shares why moms love introducing the Star Trek universe to their kids:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxSlbctJbkU

“‘Star Trek’ is such a great platform for storytelling, and because we’re standalone episodes each episode is a different opportunity to tell a new story with important messaging. And we’re now in the middle of our we’re past the middle of our second season. We’ve made 16 episodes, and we’re so excited to finally introduce the show. I mean, it’s like the longest pregnancy in history. I was introduced to ‘Star Trek’ by my mom at the age of eight — the Original Series. Anson Mount was also introduced to ‘Star Trek’ at the age of eight by his mom. And I think that that’s not by accident. I think moms want to introduce their kids to ‘Star Trek’ because when you look into your child’s eyes — I can say this as the only mom in our cast — you see curiosity. You see a need for exploration. You want your kids to think universally and think totally outside the box. And that’s what the Original Series did. It sparked a lot of conversation between my mom and me about whether or not we’re the only ones in this universe, about acceptance, about people from all different backgrounds coming together and working in harmony, about exploration and curiosity. And these are all things that mothers foster and their children. So I think when I said that at the convention in Chicago, all day long, everybody I passed said, ”My mom introduced me to ‘Star Trek!” I just kept hearing that over and over and over again. And I just love that, and hope we do that for a new generation of ‘Star Trek” fans.

Ethan Peck shares how he’s had to grow into feeling “worthy” to take on the role of Spock in Strange New Worlds,  using the early-pandemic downtime to grow as an actor – but also as a person.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj9TnJCiH54

“When I was cast in this role, once I learned what it was, which was towards the end of the [‘Star Trek: Discovery’] casting process, I was faced with this challenge and opportunity to grow. Not just as an actor, but as a person. I believed I was barely worthy of it at that time, and that’s my own personal thing and my own journey that I’ve been on since. It’s not every day or even every life that you must become more than you are. And the needs of this role, I think, require that of me. For me to grow as a person as well as an actor and the pandemic [delays], I guess we’ll call that time, really gave me a lot of time to flush out of my self things that were not working for me as a person, as a human being on this planet. I hope that I have been able to rid myself of that. I think, in turn, really informed my work.”

Peck describes the challenges of playing Spock in the new series — and finding a balance between tackling new character moments while still honoring Leonard Nimoy’s classic performance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cul7UeOF4I

“Constantly, I’m revisiting Leonard Nimoy’s voice in my head when I’m doing a lot of these scenes, you know, ‘Does this sound right? Does it feel right?’ I constantly am checking in with, I hope, the spirit of his Spock and am channeling it as well. And then there are things that are written for my iteration of Spock that have not been written before, and that is my privilege as an actor and as this Spock. I’ve done a lot of research, and I’ve now had a lot of experience as the character on set, on camera, and then I’ve got to allow a lot of space for the unknown, which is really uncomfortable, right? I think as creatures on this Earth, we want to be in control of things. In order to feel safe emotionally, I’ve had to do a lot of sort of undoing of that impulse and to welcome chaos and sort of live in a place of the unknown that’s really important to my work. Also, there’s a lot of opportunity in ‘Strange New Worlds’ to explore and see parts of Spock’s inner world that we’ve not seen before, and there’s really no roadmap for that that’s already been laid out. There is license in our exploration of the character in that regard. There are certain touchstones, qualitatively, about the character that I probably couldn’t articulate to you very well that just feel right and I hope appear in a way that looks accurate in our final product. I think I’m more comfortable at this point in time with being the custodian of this character, but I still read things in scripts that I get, and I’m like, ‘I have no idea how I’m going to do this or how it will be true to Spock’ — because what’s fun about him is that he does sort of live within these boundaries and then to place him in a scenario that he shouldn’t be in or is really uncomfortable in that’s when I think really cool things start to happen with the character, and I hope in my performance of the character.”

Celia Rose Gooding shares how their take on Cadet Nyota Uhura is informed and influenced by predecessors Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldana:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZMd6EZiqcU

“My first introduction to Uhura as a character — my mom is a huge Trekkie, and so she used to take my sister and I to watch the movies at movie theaters (when they were still a thing). I remember running to the front row and watching it by myself and craning my neck up to look at Zoe Saldana. I just remember being so captivated by… She knew how brilliant she was. It wasn’t something that she had to make a spectacle of. It was just something that when she needed to be that capable, brilliant person, there she was to be just that. And then with Nichelle Nichols, she had this grace and this glamor, and of course, she had that intelligence and her brilliance. And I think that that’s the thing that I’m trying to carry in this very young version of her. This understanding that she knows even more than she probably thinks she knows, and she’s much smarter than I think she assumes of herself. B ut the newness and the unsurety is something that I am weaving through this character as we get to know her season to season. We know where she ends up and we know who she’s she ends up being, but we don’t really know how she got there. That is something that I’m excited for the audience to sort of mark through the first season. And of course, in the seasons to come.”

Jess Bush inherits the role of Nurse Christine Chapel in Strange New Worlds, paying homage to Majel Barrett while making the character her own in the new series:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB6URzlLiaQ

“I watched Majel Barrett’s performance. What I distilled most from that and what I took from that was her candor, and her humor, and her wit, but those things were just little seedlings. And I think that Chapel in [the original ‘Star Trek’ series], her whole plot line was quite connected to who she was pining after. You know, like, that was a big feature of who she was, and I think that’s different this time. She got this lust for life and this mischievous nature that I love to embody. And I don’t know, she’s like fallible and she’s rough and tumble and she’s been through some stuff, actually. I think that [showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers] were great. Before the start of season one, we sat down and we chatted about who is she going to be. And they had some points, and they also gave me license to kind of really explore. And we talked about what her backstory might be because I think that wasn’t really explored either. H er life outside of Starfleet wasn’t really explored. And so she is really curious about other people and what their honest expression is and bringing that out, which I think is a really cool, thoughtful, and kind aspect to her that I think is new.”

Melissa Navia takes the job of Enterprise pilot very seriously in her role as Erica Ortegas — though perhaps a bit too seriously, sometimes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a94MBgRX48A

“For me, the helm console… I was doing, like, these Zoom sessions with the graphics department, with people who have been with ‘Star Trek’ for the last 30, 40 years and asking about the engines, the way everything works. And everybody was just, like, apparently word got out that Melissa is a little loony. Like, she’s like, really think she’s flying a starship. But for me, it was important to know, like, how am I going to impulse? How am I going to warp? There are times when I’m doing, like, evasive maneuvers where Captain Pike will give me an order and I’ll be like, ‘On it!,’ but it won’t come up on my screen. So I’d be straight up texting graphics, and I’d be like, ‘Can you guys give me something?’ And they’ll be like, ‘Well, it probably won’t play in the episode.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but it’s playing in my face!’ So they would create all these things for me. And I’d be like, ‘Can we change this screen?’ ‘Can we change that screen?’ Because I also think it’s important for the fans, and I know that they’re going to be fans who know more about the Enterprise than even I do, even though I’ve been doing my research. So for me, it was just kind of like when I’m there, I’m flying. There’d be times where Anson Mount would be like speaking to somebody on the viewscreen. And I’d have, like, a little quip and I’d miss it and Anson would be like, ‘Melissa!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m flying!’ I’m so focused. So I’m the dorky one on the bridge for sure.”

Navia shares how her character is a “cooler version” of herself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY-r1c9U2Tc

“So when I first got the role, the audition for the role, the writing was so wonderful and I felt this connection to Ortegas. I had the breakdown, I knew it was ‘Star Trek.’ The breakdown was that she was a combat veteran, skilled pilot, can handle a phaser, and can also crack a joke when a joke needs to be cracked. And I felt just that the audition sides I got were so much me. And also in the future — I like to say Ortegas is like a cooler version of me in the future. In the future, I’d love to fly a starship. So when I booked the role, I also got the added element of, this is a brand new character that gets to interact with all these legacy characters, which is going to be a lot of fun for fans. But this idea that she’s so confident but not… She’s cocky, but in a lovable way, right? Not in an obnoxious way, because she is really skilled. Pike trusts her intrinsically and she has such great trust in the rest of her crew, and that comes off. And so when somebody is so good at their job and trusts everybody equally in their workspace, then you’re allowed to kind of joke and play and that really comes off. Like she loves the adventure of what she does and she also takes it really seriously. We get these episodic adventures where you get to see the toll that it takes when lives are on the line. And so I’ve just been having a blast creating this character and also looking back to all the pilots that have come before that fans are already comparing her to, even though they haven’t seen anything, so I’m trying to make my own mark on it by just bringing myself to it and then also just letting what the writers have created just come to the screen. I’m also taking a lot of what the fans love about ‘Star Trek’ and putting that into Ortegas. Like she loves Starfleet in the way that fans love ‘Star Trek.'”

Netflix Is About to Drop 20 New Star Trek Episodes on One Day

Move over, Canada Day.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Ever since Star Trek began in 1966, the adventures of each starship and space station have been spooled out over time. Shows like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise all debuted new episodes weekly, and so, like most TV shows, waiting for future installments was part of the format.

Until now. Unlike any Star Trek series before it, the entirety of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 will hit Netflix at once on July 1, 2024. Will this help the fledging spin-off series, or will the binge model hurt Prodigy’s ability to make a comeback?

After being removed from Paramount+ and then rescued by Netflix, the tween-centric Prodigy Season 2 will depict the further adventures of the late USS Protostar’s rag-tag crew. Yes, that experimental Starfleet ship was destroyed in the Season 1 finale of Prodigy , “Supernova Part 2.” Alluding to the plot point on Twitter, creators Dan and Kevin Hageman recently said , “In the first season, they stole a ship. Now, watch them earn one!”

This implies Prodigy Season 2 will focus on Dal, Zero, Jankom, Gwyn, Murf, and Rok-Tahk making their way in Starfleet under the guidance of the real Admiral Janeway, rather than her hologram counterpart from Season 1. But what will this season actually be about? As the Hagemans have hinted — and as the Season 1 finale suggested — the kids have to get a new ship.

The crew in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 1

What will the crew do in Season 2? And how quickly will you have to watch to find out?

Unlike other modern Star Trek series, like the recently completed Discovery and Picard, Prodigy has 20 episode seasons, not 10, albeit while only running for about 24 minutes each. Prodigy’s first season was gradually released on Paramount+ in 2021 and 2022, which in some ways made Season 1 feel like two distinct seasons. Now, TrekMovie and other outlets have confirmed that Netflix won’t treat Prodigy the same way, and will instead release it all at once like a traditional Netflix show.

Is this good for Prodigy ? Possibly. Despite being aimed at a younger audience, Prodigy is heavily serialized. When Season 1 aired, it may have been hurt by the lack of episodes that could be watched back-to-back. Maybe the binge model will be good for families hoping to absorb more of the story quickly.

But Prodigy Season 1 also had a lot of spoilers tucked into its 20-episode run. From cameo appearances by classic Trek characters to famous alien villains and the aforementioned starship destruction, there’s a ton of cool stuff you can accidentally spoil yourself on if you don’t power through all the episodes at once.

Netflix’s big genre shows have been dealing with this for years; a new season of Stranger Things drops at midnight, and suddenly you have to be on guard for spoilers for not just the first episode, but also the finale. But Star Trek has never done this before. The franchise has always rolled out episodes in a way that makes spoilers much easier to avoid.

This gives Prodigy Season 2 even more of a challenge than Season 1. While the first season struggled to find its audience, the second season seems poised to alienate — or at least annoy — its core audience by giving away all the Trekkie goods way too quickly. As Captain Kirk once said, “Too much of anything, even love, isn’t necessarily a good thing.”

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 hits Netflix on July 1, 2024.

Tom Brittney Breaks Down His Emotional 'Grantchester' Exit

Guy ritchie's 'young sherlock' series cast is keeping things in the family, expect more ‘stranger things’ references in ‘dungeons & dragons'.

The USS Protostar is about to shut its lights down, as Paramount+ has canceled Star Trek: Prodigy after a single season of adventures. The animated series focused on a crew of young aliens that returned to Earth five years after the events of Star Trek: Voyager , when they found the ship that would eventually take them into the stories that would define the rest of their lives. According to Deadline , the previously announced second season will complete their post-production and be shopped to a new home, as the creators seek to give the crew of the Protostar a way to continue their adventures.

When the season began, Dal R'El ( Brett Gray ) was stuck in a prison, dreaming about the chance of getting out and having the opportunity to live his life. An explosion gave him the chance he desired, but the course of his life changed when he got caught again before he could get away. That's when Gwyndala ( Ella Purnell ) interrogated him, giving him the mission of locating a problematic prisoner with the name of Zero ( Angus Imrie ). However, the target would be more dangerous than expected, setting the stage for the young crew to be assembled after being brought together by destiny.

By the time the final episode aired, things were much different for the main characters, as they had a much bigger mission in front of them. The crew has to escape from the USS Protostar , as it must be destroyed while being taken to proto-warp in order to create a wormhole to the future. The hologram version of Captain Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) believes that crossing the wormhole might allow the current crew of the ship to establish contact with the original Protostar team. However, the young heroes are in trouble when they get back to Earth, and the series' cancelation means that the plot lines might not be resolved.

The Current Streaming Landscape

Alongside the cancelation of Star Trek: Prodigy , the studio announced that it would also terminate the runs of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies , The Game and other titles from their catalog. Added to that, there's a possibility for the shows to be removed from the platform entirely, even if some of them were added to the service merely a few months ago. Paramount+ is not the only streaming home taking aggressive measures towards their own content, as Disney+ recently removed Willow from their platform. The streaming landscape has never been as uncertain as it is now, as audiences and artists keep losing stories people worked really hard on.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming - for now - on Paramount+. Check out our interview with the creators below:

A Little Penny Arcade Lower Decks Fan Art

  • Share Facebook

Back when Next Generation was on television it was appointment viewing for me. I loved that series as a highschool kid. After that I caught a few episodes here and there of other Star Trek shows but that’s about it. Eventually Strange New worlds came around and sort of ignited my interest in all things Trek again. Currently We’re watching Voyager and Lower Decks here in the Krahulik house. We’re only in season 2 of both shows but I’m loving them. Voyager is a trip back in time to a different era in Television when Shows got seven seasons and almost thirty episodes per season. There’s some genuinely amazing Sci-Fi ideas in Voyager and with so many episodes you get plenty of time to get to know the characters.

Jerry and I have said that a good parody should also be an excellent version of the thing that’s being poked fun at. If you don’t have the skills to make a good Trek show then you don’t have the skills to make a good Trek parody. It's that simple. It’s like the saying “Never take criticism from someone you would not take advice from.”  Lower Decks is the perfect example of this idea. It is both a hilarious roast of all things Star Trek, as well as an honest to God kick ass Trek show full of big ideas and awesome characters. I cannot recommend it enough.  I pulled out my iPad while watching it this weekend and I had to make a little fan art.

Last year it was revealed that Fanhome would be picking up the baton of making new die-cast Star Trek ship models, after Eaglemoss went out of business in 2022. This morning Fanhome revealed their first releases and more details on the collection coming out later this year.

New Star Trek Die-Cast Collection

Fanhome is launching their new official Star Trek Starships model collection in November, with a new die-cast model starship being released every month. The collection will cover all the modern Star Trek series including Picard , Strange New Worlds , Discovery , Lower Decks and Prodigy . They have confirmed that the first three ships will be…

U.S.S. Titan NCC-80201-A

Captain Shaw’s Constitution III-class ship from Star Trek: Picard .

All the ships will be crafted from a combination of die-cast metal and high-quality resin, and the typical model will be between 7” and 9” (180-225 mm) long. Fanhome are working with Paramount Global to ensure the models are as accurate as possible and they will all be based on the original visual effects models that were used to make the effects for the show.

Each model will come with a 16-page magazine that provides an in-universe profile of the ship and explores the design process with exclusive art and brand new interviews with the production team. The project is being supervised by Ben Robinson, who previously oversaw Star Trek ship models and products for Eaglemoss.

Subscribers will also get a unique variant ship and other exclusive gifts.

There will also be regular, higher-priced XL-sized models for major ships that will be approximately 11” (280 mm) long.

It’s a shame that they aren’t making these in Eaglemoss’ original standard size.

True, but to be fair, those weren’t all to scale to each other. Not that these will either. Still a smaller scale, closer to the original Eaglemoss size would have been nice too, especially for those on a tighter budget or less space to display their ship collection. The bigger the ships the more space you need. Hopefully, Fanhome will only make ships that are more desirable versus trying to make almost every single ship ever seen on screen that a lot of people don’t care too much for. From the original Eaglemoss line, I only ever bought Starfleet ships.

Scale is important. It doesn’t make sense to display the Enterprise-E next to the Defiant when the models are of comparable size whereas in “reality” the E is 4 times larger…

As any kid who collected plastic animals knows, scale consistency will price you out pretty fast — or leave you with a little tiny fox or whatever so you can afford a blue whale. It does “make sense” to display them together b/c you know they’re models. You just have to let them be models. If you’re going to be doing realistic photography than you will have to digitally alter them to be in scale.

If I did buy these ship models (and I don’t), I would not consider them as models per se, but rather my own miniature Starfleet… So the scale would be an issue for me. For practical reasons though, you make a valid point and maybe it’s my view that doesn’t “make sense”.

Same, I have almost every Starfleet ship and shuttle from Eaglemoss, especially thanks to the recent blowout sale

Well they did go bankrupt.

At least they are starting with the ships that we didn’t get as oppose to another TOS USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and TNG USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, which I am sure that they will make new versions of too, but I imagine that most collectors will want to get these new ships first.

Just a shame the new ships are ugly af compared to the classic designs of TOS/TNG/DS9 era Trek.

I agree, I really am not a big fan of most things Nu Trek, particularly the ships. That Farragut is so ugly, very strange nacelle struts. The Titan is an abomination frankly, which Junkball Media on YouTube called an “ugly duckling” of almost kitbashed parts, but it has grown on me the more I see of it. I do appreciate a general consistency among the fleet in terms of the nacelles themselves, though. Picard S3 gave us a lot of interesting variant classes that might be worth seeing together on a shelf…

Great point! While I’m not a huge fan of these newer designs, it’s good to see them getting proper treatment.

Hope Fanhome makes a USS Enterprise-A from the end of Star Trek: Beyond. I’m not a big fan of the new movies and new ship designs, but Beyond was actually a personal favorite of mine and I actually liked the new Enterprise-A design over the original Kelvin Enterprise designs.

The new A was an interesting design from the little we saw. I was bummed that Eaglemoss never did it.

The ‘A’ actually came off reasonably well in the few seconds of screen time allotted to it — but, man, before getting too excited check out Sean Hargreaves’ side profile artwork sometime. One word: ugh!

Yeah, it’s definitely bulky. Not my favorite, but it’s an interesting permutation on the classic Enterprise model.

I agree I think it’s very oddly proportioned, not a huge fan of the nacelle struts. I really liked the Kelvinprise personally, especially the first 2 movies and less so the refit from Beyond with smaller swept back nacelles.

Also, TREKMOVIE, did you see that BigBadToystore.com is selling pre-orders for new bendy FleXfigs Star Trek action figures of Captains Benjamin Sisko (seasons 6 & 7 of DS9 uniform), Jean-Luc Picard (TNG seasons 3-7 uniform), James T. Kirk (TOS), and Christopher Pike (SNW)? The figures are made by The Canadian Group and are for sale at $10.99 USD on the BigBadToystore website.

why start not even one ship that would get people interested in the line?

Are you kidding? The Titan is literally the one ship I have been waiting to get a model of.

Oh yeah sure, let’s start another model line with the same constitution and galaxy-class models that every single company makes.

I literally gasped aloud seeing the Titan. I don’t even collect these! I’m getting my first one, an Enterprise-D, from a giveaway — and even I’m like “I might need that Titan”. Like, dude, just b/c YOU feel a certain way doesn’t mean everyone else does. I wish fans would learn to just speak for themselves.

i mistyped the original comment and can’t fix. I meant to say, why start the line without at least one of the more well-known ships to get more casual, first timers interested. The Titan is cool but without a bigger name ship, I’d be concerned that it will fizzle.

Also – I would take it as an axiom that of course I’m just speaking for myself. Just like you are…. eyeroll

I see your point, but don’t rule out the popularity of the Titan-A and the Stargazer with fandom and ‘new’ fandom.

Well at least you can tell who the intended audience is for these. It makes sense to be that they’re sort of “taking the baton” so to speak from Eaglemoss who didn’t stick around long enough to make these newer ships. I’m just frustrated they have to come in the larger size and with the larger price tag. I got no room for these behemoths.

These are the wrong ships to be launching with. I’ll get the Titan if the quality is good enough.

I remember getting the Enterprise A XL from Eaglemoss and looking at it in disbelief. It was so badly made.

Yeah, I read an article describing all the mistakes on that ship. There was just no excuse for them at all, especially at that price.

The Diamond Select ship was far far better.

and now the A XL goes for 250 to 500 on ebay. Masterreplicas didnt find anymore before removing the ships but interestingly real merch had them in stock shortly for like 80 bucks, after everyone thought there arent any left.

also does the A XL look so bad from 12 ft away?

I don’t look to bad from 12 feet away, but you don’t want a close up. Trust me.

No, it’s fine. It’s just that there are some blatant details, especially on the saucer, that are all wrong and there’s no reason for them to be.

It’s the awful seams that I hate.

Hello Beautiful. Love that Titan.

They have a Dutch website as well, but nothing about the new Trek ships on there yet.

They only can be shipped to US, UK and Germany. To other countries shipment is not possible.

The Constitution III-class and the Farragut look pretty cool.

These are just not in the price range I am looking for. Why can’t we get a return of Star Trek MicroMachines or better yet something like the Jazzwares Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron ships?

The Fanhome website shows the Enterprise F as well. YES!!!

I’d buy the titan. I don’t collect post modern trek items, but I’d make an exception for Captain Shaw’s ship.

When wasn’t Trek postmodern, I wonder? The TNG era was a textbook exercise in postmodern art. In my head I call that the “reverent Trek” era – the time when the franchise took itself seriously and honored its roots. Everything post Kelvin to me is the “irreverent Trek” era – let’s just blow sh*t up and do our own thing without any respect for what came before.

Generally speaking I’m a huge starship geek, and thanks to the recent Master Replicas sale of Eaglemoss overstock I have a model of just about every Starfleet ship. I’m not the biggest fan of the ships we’ve seen on screen since Discovery premiered – there were a few from Disco’s 23rd century that grabbed me, but we didn’t get a good look at most of them anyway thanks to the terrible VFX shots. Picard’s 24th century ships were a lot better looking imo, and I might pick up a Titan even though I consider it a shameful nostalgia bait-y design that makes zero sense in universe.

My only concern is that, like with the Disco and Picard Eaglemoss ships which were so unpopular (cuz the series were so unpopular), they’re making these things too large. Who at this point has room for more 8 inch models on their shelves? I loved how Eaglemoss made XL versions of classic “hero” starships, but never made us fork over 60 bucks for, say, an 8 inch Freedom class. But that’s exactly what they did with the Nu Trek designs, and that’s why I didn’t buy them, and it’s why I’m very skeptical of this new line making such third rate designs like the Farragut in the same size class as the Titan. These ships just aren’t that good or important to justify it, and I doubt they’ll ever sell in quantity.

I would love a collection of enterprises all in the same scale. I’m sure many others would too, but I also understand how it might not work so well in the bigger marketplace.

Perhaps they could consider doing a Kickstarter like circumstance, where we pre-pay, and they base the manufacturing and volume based on that. Kind of like Tomy didwith their big Enterprise. I wonder if that would be viable?

Great news! Especially Ben Robinson’s involvement…

But dang it, they’re going to make us wait to get the Titan with 1701-G labels aren’t they…

i wonder if the stands will be the same as eaglemoss. if fanhome wanted to makes some fast money, sell replacement stands for the old eaglemoss line. my XL ENT-A stand broke while moving and the XL Prometheus stand never worked from the beginning. i got 3rd party stands on etsy but i prefer the eaglemoss stands.

i’ll order the Titan-A but dunno about any other ones. i completed my collection of ships i wanted with eaglemoss during the master replica sales. the only one i might want is if they do a large ENT-F
