The Next Phase

Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer in charge of Star Trek, released a statement about the current shows and the future of the Trek franchise:

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow ‘Star Trek’ into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount+, we’re keeping our word. Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build ‘Trek’s’ next phase of programming for years to come.”

“Next phase,” eh?  I wonder what that could entail.  This could mean that some of the current shows may be ending to make way for others; Picard has long been rumoured to be a limited-run series, so it may very well end after Season 3.

But what could follow?  Kurtzman has spoken about a Starfleet Academy show in early development, which could be interesting, as well as the continued development of the Section 31 series to be led by Michelle Yeoh.  Either of these shows could be on the horizon for 2023 or later.

There’s also the little matter of a new Star Trek film slated for release in December 2023.  Consistent movie universes are well established these days, with Marvel and Star Wars being the prime examples.  Star Trek has always maintained a close continuity between series and films, so perhaps the “next phase” is a Star Trek Cinematic Universe !

Maybe Kurtzman has something else up his sleeve which he can’t discuss yet?

As always, when Treksphere knows, you will too!

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Release Date

Premiere date prediction: Late 2022, Early 2023

We don’t yet have a release date for the third season of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek , but it is currently in production (or, you know, hopefully ), so the wait between Season 2 and 3 will likely much shorter than the one between Season 1 and 2.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Announced

Woo! Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed! There’s something special about watching a TV show for which another season is already guaranteed. This is now the case for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, which we already know will be getting more stories in Season 5.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Announced

You know a media company has a lot of faith in a new series when it gets a Season 2 renewal before it’s even premiered. This is the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which hopefully means Paramount has liked what it has seen of its first season.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Announced

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be back for a Season 4! The fourth season will consist of 10 episodes, and does not yet have a release date.

In 2022, five different Star Trek series will air new seasons. This includes

  • The second half of Star Trek: Discovery Season 4
  • The rest of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1
  • Star Trek: Picard Season 2
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3

To be clear, this has never happened before in Star Trek history, and other than Marvel , you’d be hard-pressed to find other big sci-fi/fantasy franchises pulling off this much new stuff in a single year. Arguably, the Trek franchise pioneered this kind of pluralism in the ‘90s when shows like The Next Generation aired new episodes at the same time as Deep Space Nine . In 2020, Trek aired three shows, Picard Season 1, Lower Decks Season 1, and Discovery Season 3. But five is a lot.

Star Trek: Discovery and Prodigy 2022 schedule

The animated series Star Trek: Prodigy is currently airing new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+ and will continue to do so until February 3, when Episode 10 will air. After that, Paramount has confirmed the show will take a break, and “the additional 10-episode-long second half of season one will be available on Paramount+ later in 2022.”

The following week on February 10 — as previously announced — Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 will resume with Episode 8. Hopefully, the source of the DMA and the emergence of Zora will all be addressed before the end of the season. Also, the final three episodes of Discovery Season 4 will interestingly overlap with the premiere of the next big Trek show. It looks like the 13th episode of Discovery Season 4 will air on March 17, which will actually be three weeks into the new season of Picard .

What is the Picard Season 2 release date?

Although initially announced for February 2022, the long-anticipated second season of Picard will now hit on March 3, 2022 , taking Discovery’s Thursday release slot on Paramount+. Again, the first three episodes of Picard Season 2 will dovetail with the final three episodes of Discovery Season 4, meaning for three weeks — from March 3 to March 17 — two different Star Trek episodes from different series will drop on the same day. (CBS and Paramount reps have confirmed that this overlap will happen!)

As shown in the trailers , Picard Season will follow a time travel plot in which Jean-Luc and the La Sirena crew have to head back to 21st Century Earth in order to undo a nightmarish future. Picard Season 2’s showrunner is 12 Monkeys maestro Terry Matalas, so it’s fair to expect similar mind-bending paradoxes in this Trek. On Wednesday, January 19, Paramount+ also revealed awesome new key art for Picard Season 2, with Q (John de Lancie) and Picard looking awesome.

Delays caused Picard Season 2 to push its release date, so it’s been two years since Season 1 ended. However, Paramount confirmed Season 3 of the series is being filmed back-to-back with Season 2. Jonathan Frakes also recently confirmed to Inverse that he’s directed a “block” of Picard Season 2 episodes.

What is the Strange New Worlds release date?

This is the big one! Announced in 2020, the series Strange New Worlds finally has a release date: May 5, 2022. This means that the 10th episode of Picard Season 2 will debut on the same day as the series premiere of Strange New Worlds. It also means the summer will kick off with a new Star Trek series focused on the classic USS Enterprise .

According to co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, Strange New Worlds will be more episodic than the previous newer shows, which will harken back to a more classic format of standalone adventures. The new Trek series is both a spin-off of Discovery and a prequel to The Original Series simultaneously. Set in the late 2250s, the show will chronicle the further adventures of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) on the USS Enterprise , along with Spock (Ethan Peck) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), who all appeared in Discovery Season 2 in 2019.

The series will reveal new versions of classic ‘60s Trek characters, including Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) and, Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). The series will also feature new Enterprise crewmembers, Bruce Horak, as Hemmer, Christina Chong as La’an Noonein-Singh, and Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas.

It’s also been announced that Strange New Worlds is already renewed for Season 2, something Jonathan Frakes mentioned to Inverse last year when he revealed he will be directing episodes of Strange New Worlds this year.

The gang is totally coming back — sooner than you thought!

What is the Lower Decks Season 3 release date?

Don’t forget the Lower Deckers! The third season of Mike McMahan’ s hilarious animated comedy returns in the summer of 2022. Paramount doesn’t have an exact release date yet but considering the track record of Lower Decks , August 2022 is a good bet. Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, with Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) framed for blowing up a planet she totally didn’t blow up. Paramount also confirmed that Lower Decks Season 4 has been greenlit.

star trek release schedule 2022

Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) will come back for at least one more season of DISCO .

What about Discovery Season 5 and the future?

Paramount’s latest press release confirms that Discovery has been greenlit for Season 5. Presumably, this will air in 2023, which interestingly is also when the next Star Trek feature film is thought to release. When Inverse spoke to Discovery actor Doug Jones last year, he said he felt that Discovery could run for at least five seasons. Will it go beyond that? Who knows!

2023 might be another packed year for Star Trek, but for now, 2022 is the biggest year for the final frontier ever.

Expected to start airing around the time Strange New Worlds starts wrapping up in July, season three sees our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos band together to free Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) from Starfleet Security, after she was wrongly accused of destroying the Pakled homeworld in the climax of season two . Upcoming Star Trek Shows and Series In Development

Upcoming: star trek: prodigy season 1, part 2.

Image: Paramount

The first half of the first season of the animated series Prodigy — following a crew of alien teens who escape a torturous living on a mining encampment in the Delta Quadrant, thanks to the discovery of the USS  Protostar, an experimental Starfleet vessel with an advanced warp drive — wrapped up on Paramount+ earlier this year , but is currently expected to return for the second half of the season later in 2022 . Will Admiral Janeway ( returning Voyager legend Kate Mulgrew ) be able to catch up with the ship formerly captained by her old friend Chakotay (fellow returning Voyager legend, Robert Beltran)? Time, and perhaps a chat with Protostar holographic instructor Janeway ( also returning Voyager legend Kate Mulgrew), will tell.

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Image: Paramount

Expected some time in 2023 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more… for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

Upcoming: Star Trek: Picard Season 3

Star Trek: Picard ’s third, and now officially final, season is also expected on Paramount+ some time in 2023 , although considering it was shot back-to-back with season two, don’t be too surprised if it gets a surprise start later this year. There’s plenty to be excited about too: the series is going out in style, reuniting Sir Patrick Stewart with The Next Generation ’s command crew : Brent Spiner as Data, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Michael Dorn as Worf, and LeVar Burton as Geordi LaForge.

In Development: Section 31

Image: Paramount

Although it’s been officially unveiled since 2019 , we still don’t have a clue when this spinoff based around the seediest side of Starfleet — the shadowy spy organisation Section 31 , first introduced in Deep Space Nine — with Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh is actually meant to air. Yeoh, who will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham, is still expected to return, but beyond that, no one knows what to expect. Especially because the way Yeoh exited Discovery ’s third season means that Georgiou could basically show up anywhere across Star Trek ’s timeline .

In Development: Starfleet Academy

Image: Paramount

If we’ve been waiting a while for Section 31 to happen, then somehow this is even longer. Back in the heady days of 2018 , when Discovery was the only new Star Trek , part of series architect Alex Kurtzman’s deal with CBS to helm a new era of Trek included talk of a series based around Starfleet Academ y, the San Francisco-based school that shaped the Federation’s engineers, scientists, doctors, pilots, and commanders into the future explorers and peacekeepers of the galaxy. Originally slated to be showrun by Marvel’s Runaways’   Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, the series went quiet after these initial reports, however earlier this year it was re-confirmed that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is in the works again .

Now developed by Absentia co-creator Gaia Violo, little is known about the series beyond that, other than that it will obviously follow Starfleet cadets, and is expected to potentially follow the Section 31 series into production sometime in the next year. We also don’t know when it could be set in Star Trek ’s timeline, but Discovery ’s fourth season did include a major development for Mary Wiseman’s Sylvia Tilly , where she left the ship to take a teaching position at the re-opened Starfleet Academy of the 31st Century — so it could stand to reason the show could follow her, but we don’t know right now.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Complete

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek boldly goes into 2022 with renewals, premiere dates

Paramount+ is more than just the streaming home for every new Star Trek series. However, there’s a lot of Star Trek on the horizon for fans to enjoy, and Paramount+ isn’t wasting any time lining up even more for years to come. The streaming service has formally renewed Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and Star Trek: Lower Decks for new seasons.

The flagship series, Star Trek: Discovery , is currently on a midseason hiatus. The fourth season of Discovery will resume on Thursday, February 10. With the renewal in hand, Discovery ‘s fifth season will likely begin filming later this year.

Paramount+ also announced that Star Trek: Picard season 2 will premiere on Thursday, March 3. This series was already renewed and in the middle of shooting season three before a recent COVID outbreak forced the set to shut down. Production is likely to resume in the near future.

Following the season finale of Picard , a new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,  will premiere on Thursday, May 5. Spinning out of Discovery season 2, this series will follow young Spock’s adventures on the Enterprise under his first commanding officer, Captain Pike. This series will also differ from Discovery by embracing stand-alone episodes that take the crew to new destinations each week. Today’s announcement ensures a second season for the show.

The animated series Star Trek: Lower Deck s already had a third season of 10 episodes ready to go this summer. But as noted above, Paramount+’s renewal means that a fourth season of 10 episodes will likely follow in 2023.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow Star Trek into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount+, we’re keeping our word,” said Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement. “Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build Trek ’s next phase of programming for years to come.”

Left out of the announcement was the potential Section 31 spinoff series starring Michelle Yeoh’s Empress Philippa Georgiou. That show has not received a formal pickup yet.

Summer is almost here, and while that might mean spending more time outdoors, it’s also prime time for new and returning shows that are either already on your watch list or should be! There’s an eclectic mix of titles to suit differing tastes, from the person looking to reignite their love of zombies with the newest Walking Dead series to eager audiences looking for the newest true crime shows, enticing dramas, and an intriguing Netflix show that is sure to be one of the most popular of the month. Manifest (June 2) Manifest: Season 4 | Official Trailer | Netflix

Since it debuted in 2020, each season of the sci-fi spinoff Star Trek: Picard has had its own unique story and tone, guided by a different showrunner’s vision for the series. The first season was a drama about Adm. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), now a 100-year-old Starfleet legend, leaving his lonely retirement and confronting his grief over the loss of his friend, the android Data. Season 2 took Picard and his new crew back in time to our present day to save the timeline while exploring Picard’s childhood trauma. For its third and final season, new showrunner Terry Matalas has taken the series in a more traditional direction, reuniting Sir Patrick Stewart with the rest of the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation for an old-school space adventure in the style of the classic Star Trek film series. Where previous seasons have received mixed reviews from Trekkies and critics alike, this more traditional iteration of Picard has, naturally, garnered almost universal praise from the fan base, to whom it has been painstakingly catered. Littered with Easter eggs and cribbing liberally from the franchise’s greatest hits, Picard season 3 gives the people what they want: the same stuff they already have, with a happy ending and a hook for a spinoff. Spoilers ahead for the final season of Star Trek: Picard.

What is Star Trek: Picard season 3 about?

With Star Trek: Picard coming to an end this week, and Star Trek: Discovery slated to conclude next year, the future of the franchise now rests in the hands of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This series is a spinoff of Discovery and takes place a decade before the original series, with Anson Mount's Christopher Pike as the captain of the Enterprise. But as seen in the first teaser trailer for Strange New Worlds season 2, Spock (Ethan Peck) is also going to get his first chance to sit in the captain's chair.

Paramount Plus 'Star Trek' shows all getting new episodes in 2022

‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ are just around the corner.

Star Trek: Discovery

Paramount Plus is going boldly into 2022, announcing new release dates for its group of Star Trek original series — Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition to release dates, four out of the five shows have also earned 10-episode season renewals from the streaming service.

The Star Trek series have become some of the flagship Paramount Plus original series , tapping into the passionate fan base with shows that focus on new and familiar characters, as well as expand into animation targeted for both adults and kids.

Star Trek: Discovery was one of the first new Star Trek original series, debuting when Paramount Plus was still CBS All Access. Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery is set to debut on Paramount Plus Feb. 10, but fans can rest assured in knowing that there will definitely be a season 5, as the show was renewed. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

Star Trek: Picard is set to return for its second season on March 3. Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in this original series, alongside Alison Pill, Isa Briones and Jeri Ryan. Star Trek: Picard is already in production for its third season.

The latest Star Trek original series on Paramount Plus, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have its premiere on May 5 and has already been renewed for a second season. A prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Etha Peck.

On the animated side, Star Trek: Lower Decks is going to return for season 3 with 10 new episodes in summer 2022. The series, featuring the voice work of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero, has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Star Trek: Prodigy , meanwhile, is currently in the middle of its first season’s first half, with that capping off with episode 10 on Feb. 3. The second half of season 1, featuring another 10 episodes, is expected to debut on Paramount Plus later in 2022. Following a group of teens that stumble upon a derelict Starfleet ship, Star Trek: Prodigy features the voices of Brett Gray, Rylee Alazraqui, Jason Mantzoukas and Kate Mulgrew.

Star Trek series timeline: What shows are airing in 2022 and when

With so much Star Trek this year, when will they debut?

Star Trek is set to have a big 2022. This year alone, five shows will air, one of which may see two seasons’ worth of shows revealed. It’s an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan, but with so many shows coming out it can be hard to keep track of when every show is set to start airing new episodes.

Don’t worry, we have your hookup. Whether you’re watching Prodigy , or waiting on Discovery, maybe you’re anxious for Strange New World’s debut or just can’t wait to get more Lower Decks, we have the key dates for the rest of the Star Trek streaming calendar.

So when is each show coming back or premiering?

  • Prodigy returned on Jan. 6, ending on Feb. 3
  • Discovery’s 4th season returns on Feb. 10
  • Picard’s 2nd season debuts on March 3.
  • Strange New Worlds debuts on May 5.
  • Lower Decks 3rd season debuts later in the year, after Strange New Worlds (no date)
  • Prodigy’s second-half of season one will be in “later” in 2022.
  • Prodigy’s second season may still air at the end of 2022.

That’s not all the Star Trek goodness this year

We’ll post a more formal schedule post, highlighting other things that may be happening this year but if you’re not aware Star Trek also has a new video game coming out this year, as well as the Playmate toy line being relaunched, a host of new comics and it’s very likely that we find out our first bit of news regarding the new films.

So it’s not just the streaming shows that we’re getting this year, but also a whole host of other great pieces of Trek merchandise. It may not be the golden era of the 90s, and fans may need to accept that era is never coming back but the Trek franchise is as healthy as it’s been in a while.

Picard

Star Trek has announced a major expansion to its television output.

The headline news is that Picard season 2 finally has a release date. The follow-up to the Patrick Stewart-led spinoff will arrive on Paramount Plus (and Prime Video outside the US) on March 3, with new episodes releasing weekly.

The trailers for the second season of Picard have already highlighted what’s sure to be the season’s main conflict: a meeting of the minds between Jean-Luc and his eternal rival, Q (John de Lancie).

Not only that, but Picard is also coming back for a third season. That was revealed alongside a wave of new renewals: Star Trek Discovery season 5 is happening, while the Captain Pike series Strange New Worlds – set to debut on May 5 – has already been picked up for a second season. Each will consist of 10 episodes.

Over on the animation side, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 has a summer 2022 release window and a fourth season in the works; the second half of Star Trek: Prodigy will be available to stream on Paramount Plus "later in 2022."

"Four years ago, we made a promise to grow Star Trek into something it had never been before," executive producer Alex Kurtzman said in a statement on Star Trek’s official website . Upcoming: Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4

The third season of the animated series following the misfit crew of the USS Cerritos —and in particular its cadre of ensigns, Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—once again followed our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos. Season four will be arriving in late summer . The show has also been renewed for a fifth season .

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more... for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

In Flux: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

The animated series aimed at younger Trek fans (and Janeway fans!) and kids at heart can be found on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The first season was divided into two parts, with part two wrapping up at the end of 2022; after Paramount+ announced it would not move forward with the show’s already greenlit season two , it was removed from the service . ( A home release of the complete first season is still possible ; the first 10 episodes are still available for purchase.) Fans are still waiting to hear if Prodigy season two will surface on a different outlet .

Upcoming: Starfleet Academy

It’s really happening! After a long tease, filming on this series will begin in 2024. Here’s the official announcement from co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today!   Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Upcoming (movie): Star Trek: Section 31

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favorite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organization Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Newly minted Oscar winner Yeoh will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham. “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” Yeoh said in a statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 will start production later this year, and eventually come to Paramount+.

That’s all the new bits of Star Trek coming. But what about the old Star Trek ? How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Star trek expands iconian lore with wild new link to the guardian of forever, wait... did star trek just settle its most powerful species of all time.

  • Modern Star Trek should prioritize captivating stories over strict adherence to canonical details.
  • Straying from established canon can allow for more creative storytelling and character development.
  • Acknowledging Star Trek's inconsistent past can help future projects strike a balance between canon and originality.

It doesn't bother me when modern Star Trek strays from previously established canon. With its nearly sixty-year history, Star Trek has a vast and complicated canonical timeline that began in 1966 with Star Trek: The Original Series . Since then, numerous sequels and prequels have continued to build upon what began in TOS. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the USS Enterprise crew explored the stars, and I was captivated by their journey, not by the facts and figures of their various voyages.

Although Star Trek's various prequels and sequels try to uphold what has already been established, sticking too closely to canon can limit storytelling potential. When I watch Star Trek, I want to fall in love with compelling characters and embark on fantastical adventures; I don't really care when exactly the United Federation of Planets first encountered the Borg or when Kirk learned about Spock's Vulcan fiancée . That's not to say that modern Star Trek should intentionally contradict canon, but it's okay if it has to move some dates around or change an alien's appearance in service of a good story.

As prequels, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have already muddied the waters regarding canon.

The Star Trek TV franchise has existed for 57 years and consists of 12 shows (and counting). Here's how to watch them all in timeline order.

Modern Star Trek Should Focus On Telling Good Stories, Not Strictly Upholding Canon

Besides, some of the plotlines that are considered canon are... not great..

With such an extensive history composed of numerous television shows and films, it's nearly impossible for any official canon to remain completely consistent, especially considering how many different people contribute to Star Trek . I think Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has done a particularly good job upholding the important elements of canon, while still focusing on telling good stories. I'm glad the Gorn no longer look like humans in bulky costumes, for example, and it doesn't bother me that Spock learned of the Gorn before he was technically "supposed" to.

I don't think Star Trek needs to explain and perfectly connect every single plotline.

With time travel and multiple universes, almost anything could be made to fit into canon, but I don't think Star Trek needs to go out of its way to make everything fit. Star Trek: Discovery , for example, ended with a connection to a Star Trek: Short Treks episode entitled "Calypso," and while it's nice for a story to come full circle, that connection felt largely unnecessary. I would have been perfectly content with the implication that "Calypso" happened in another universe, or even simply with that Short Trek remaining a mystery. The universe is full of mysteries, after all, and I don't think Star Trek needs to explain and perfectly connect every single plotline.

Star Trek: TOS Was Not Trying To Build A Consistent Canon Anyway

Establishing a franchise canon was not common in the 1960s..

Having an official canon for a franchise like Star Trek is a relatively new phenomenon. When Gene Roddenberry and his team were making Star Trek: The Original Series in the 1960s, they didn't have a show bible like modern television shows do. When a writer decided to give Captain Kirk a brother only to kill him off in the same episode, for example, they had no idea that someone would be telling stories about Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) decades later. If they had, they might have let him live. TOS was not even consistent within its own continuity, making it impossible to uphold every established piece of information.

While I always appreciate when shows like Discovery or Strange New Worlds call back to Star Trek's history, I also don't mind when they veer away from it. I don't want Sam Kirk to be killed by weird flying parasites just because "Operation — Annihilate!" says he has to be. If the writers of Strange New Worlds find ways to make this plot point (or any other element of canon) part of a compelling story, then so be it. But I hope future Star Trek projects find a balance between sticking to canon and telling great stories. I mean, would anyone really be that upset if we all just pretended "Spock's Brain" never happened?

Star Trek: The Original Series

*Availability in US

Not available

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the exploits of the crew of the USS Enterprise. On a five-year mission to explore uncharted space, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) must trust his crew - Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Forest DeKelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) - with his life. Facing previously undiscovered life forms and civilizations and representing humanity among the stars on behalf of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Enterprise regularly comes up against impossible odds and diplomatic dilemmas.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a television series that takes place before the events of the original series and follows Captain Christopher Pike as he mans the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show focuses on this previous crew of the Enterprise as they explore the galaxy with returning characters from Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Prodigy is being heavily advertised by Netflix, a strong sign of things to come

Star Trek: Prodigy has gone through a lot. Debuting in 2021, the show has not seen any new episodes released since 2022. That's for a few reasons. The strikes in 2023 didn't help things, admittedly but Prodigy's long turnaround on episodes is partly because Star Trek's parent company Paramount is struggling financially. They had to cut a lot of content in recent years to try and fix their bottom line.

A bottom line that really can't be fixed, at least not when talking about Paramount+. They've drastically scaled back on series and film productions in recent years, significantly impacting Star Trek as much as anyone. The financial issues were so bad, they ended up canceling production on Prodigy's second season halfway through production of the season.

It seemed like the best move to make financially, especially since the show was directly tied to Playmates and their most recent line of action figures with Star Trek. A line that was ended due in part to Prodigy's cancelation. That wouldn't be the end of the animated series, however. Prodigy would live on again on Netflix, landing on the service at the end of 2023.

While some are concerned about the show's future on the service, and their outdated release schedule of releasing every episode at once, it appears as though Netflix knows Star Trek is a get and is acting accordingly.

In a new tweet from the streaming giant, Prodigy is listed as one of the eight series and films that are being hyped the most this July.

Prodigy's second season is being listed alongside the likes of the newest Beverly Hills Cop film, Axel F, and the first part of Cobra Kai's final season, Lost joining Netflix, Vikings: Valhalla, Elite, Sweet Home, and Receiver.

Considering how important a lot of those films and shows are to Netflix this summer, seeing Prodigy's name right alongside them gives us a strong feeling that Netflix will do what it can to ensure the series' success on the service. If Prodigy does well on Netflix, Paramount may end up opting to move more shows to the platform as concerns over Paramount+'s viability continue to grow.
