Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, California, during the early '80s, from the beginning the group's leader was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -- building a huge following among skateboarders and thus lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk -- before eventually turning their focus to thrash metal. Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, guitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly difficult to book shows due to rumors of its members' affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances. The underground buzz regarding Suicidal grew too loud for labels to ignore, though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier ; issuing Muir and company's classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point; its best-known track, "Institutionalized," was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV, and was eventually used in the cult classic, Emilio Estevez movie Repo Man, as well as in an episode for the hit TV show Miami Vice (for which the group made a cameo appearance).

Suicidal Tendencies announce Australian tour, playing classic debut album in full
- X (formerly Twitter)
Californian punk rock legends Suicidal Tendencies will return to Australia to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their iconic self-titled debut album with four shows to take place this November.
That debut album stands up as one of the key records in the development of punk rock through the 80s, as the genre began to broaden and incorporate elements of other styles into its furious form.
For Suicidal Tendencies, they co-opted the fledgling thrash metal genre most fervently, adding an even harder edge to the punk's fury. It was a formative record for so many punks and still packs a hell of a punch today.
Their music has always gone hand in hand with skate culture too, so much so that the band were inducted into the Skateboarding Hall Of Fame in 2016.
On their return to Australia this November, Suicidal Tendencies – led of course by the great Cyco Miko – will play their classic debut record in its entirety. Given that record is all done and dusted in less than half an hour, we reckon they'll pull some classic from throughout their career as well.
The band still play with the kind of intensity you'd expect. They consistently have hugely impressive musicians as part of their revolving cast of members and this tour will be no different with Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan), Dean Pleasants, Tye Trujillo (Robert Trujillo's son!), and Greyson Nekrutman joining Mike onstage for these wild shows.
Catch Suicidal Tendencies playing the following shows this November. Tickets are on sale now.
Saturday 11 November – The Triffid, Brisbane
Thursday 16 November – The Metro Theatre, Sydney
Friday 17 November – Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne
Saturday 18 November – Froth and Fury Festival, Adelaide

Announce 40th Anniversary Australian Tour For November
“Still Cyco Punk After All These Years”
Playing The “Suicidal Tendencies” Debut Album In Full
Prepare to have your mind Institutionalized Australia.
The one and only Suicidal Tendencies will be bringing their 'Still Cyco Punk After All These Years' tour to our shores for the 40th Anniversary of their landmark, self titled debut. 1983’s Suicidal Tendencies!
Hailing from the sun-soaked streets of Venice, California, ST was the brainchild of the unstoppable force known as Mike Muir, younger brother of original Z-Boy and Dogtown Skateboard founder Jim Muir.
Picture this: it’s the early 80’s and Muir takes the essence of skating, surfing, and the Dogtown scene and infuses it with a new style of hardcore that forever changed the punk and metal landscape. Suicidal Tendencies hit the stage with a uniqueness that ignited a wild frenzy among crowds. Flipped up hats, hand-drawn shirts, and bandanas became their signature and was instantly recognisable and defiant. They caused such a shitstorm that they were even banned from tearing up stages in their own backyard of L.A!
But did that stop ST? Absolutely not and they went on to take the world by storm. Blending punk, metal, and hardcore into something else: Skate-Punk-Thrash. They shattered musical boundaries and left a trail of awe-inspiring chaos in their wake. With their aggressive sound and unapologetic attitude, they became favourites among the extreme sports community, pumping adrenaline into the veins of every skateboarder, surfer, and thrill-seeker out there.
The rest is history..
Suicidal Tendencies has evolved like a raging beast over the past four decades. With multiple Gold records and Grammy nominations under their belt, they have left an indelible mark on heavy music the world over. Their legacy has even earned them a prestigious spot in the Skateboard Hall of Fame, forever cementing their impact on both music and culture. And let's not forget the incredible talent that has graced their ranks over the years, with the likes of Robert Trujillo, Thundercat, Josh Freese, and Brooks Wackerman contributing their exceptional skills to the Suicidal family.
Now, in celebration of their self-titled debut album's 40th anniversary, Suicidal Tendencies are returning to Australia with a vengeance!
Prepare to be blown away as Mike Muir leads the charge, joined by the powerhouse lineup of Ben Weinman (from the legendary Dillinger Escape Plan), Dean Pleasants, Tye Trujillo (son of the one and only Robert Trujillo), and Greyson Nekrutman.
They're revved up and armed with the same explosive energy and unrelenting aggression that made them an unstoppable force back in '83.
Brace yourselves because Suicidal Tendencies is coming for you,
and if you miss out, You’ll Be Sorry.
