Full Cast Announced for the UK and Ireland Tour of THE CHER SHOW

March 15, 2022 Last updated: April 25, 2022 3:48 pm By Admin

The producers of the brand new production of The Cher Show have announced the full cast joining Debbie Kurup , Danielle Steers and Millie O’Connell , all starring as Cher – Star, Lady and Babe respectively.

THE CHER SHOW - LtoR Millie O'Connell, Debbie Kurup, Danielle Steers, credit Matt Crockett.

Lucas Rush will play Sonny, Jake Mitchell will play Bob Mackie, Sam Ferriday will play Greg Allman and Tori Scott will play Georgia. Joining them are Jordan Anderton, Jasmine Jules Andrews, Carla Bertran, Catherine Cornwall, Áine Curran, Sam Holden, Samantha Ivey, Aston Newman Hannington, Ingrid Olivia, Clayton Rosa, Chay Wills and Guy Woolf.

With book by Tony and Olivier Award-winning Rick Elice (Jersey Boys, The Addams Family, Peter and the Starcatcher), direction by Arlene Phillips (Saturday Night Fever, Starlight Express, Grease), choreography by Oti Mabuse (two-time Strictly Come Dancing champion) and costume design by Gabriella Slade (Six, In The Heights, Spice World 2019 Tour), the UK & Ireland Tour will open at Leicester’s Curve on 15 April 2022 and will continue through to 1 April 2023.

From a young child with big dreams, the shy daughter of an Armenian American truck driver, to the dizzying heights of global stardom, The Cher Show tells the incredible story of Cher’s meteoric rise to fame. Cher takes the audience by the hand and introduces them to the influential people in her life, from her mother and Sonny Bono, to fashion designer and costumier Bob Mackie. It shows how she battled the men who underestimated her, fought the conventions and, above all, was a trailblazer for independence.

The musical is packed with 35 of her biggest hits, including ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, ‘I Got You Babe’, ‘Strong Enough’, ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’ and ‘Believe’.

With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award®, an Emmy®, a Grammy®, three Golden Globes® and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Cher has influenced popular culture more than most. Her on-screen career started in 1971 with her weekly television show that attracted 30 million viewers a week, and went on to include starring roles in iconic films from Moonstruck, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress, to Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, which prompted the New York Magazine to realise “every single movie—no matter how flawless—would be infinitely better if it included Cher.” Her ‘Farewell Tour’ became the highest grossing music tour in history – in true Cher fashion, she followed up her ‘Farewell Tour’ with two further sell-out, worldwide arena tours. She is the only artist in history to have a number one hit in the Billboard chart for six consecutive decades; an achievement that caused Vogue to deem her “eternally relevant and the ruler of outré reinvention”. She became known as the Queen of Reinvention.

In the 1990s, she established The Cher Charitable Foundation to support causes around the world. She has been a long-time donor and supporter of Habitat for Humanity, The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and Keep A Child Alive, an organisation that helps to combat the AIDs epidemic. Most recently, she co-founded Free the Wild to help rescue Kaavan the Asian elephant from Islamabad zoo.

Written by Tony Award-winning Rick Elice, The Cher Show made its debut on Broadway in 2018 in a production that earned two Tony Awards and delighted fans from around the world. This new production will be the European premiere.

The Cher Show UK & Ireland Tour will have set design by Tom Rogers, musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Rich Morris, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Dan Samson, music production by Gary Hickeson, wigs, hair and make-up design by Sam Cox, associate direction by James Cousins, associate choreography by James Bennett, musical direction by Danny Belton and casting by Will Burton CDG.

The Cher Show UK & Ireland Tour is produced by ROYO with Fiery Angel, Cuffe & Taylor/LIVE NATION and Playing Field in association with Tilted, Aria Entertainment and JONES Theatrical Group.

Mabuse, who made her musical theatre choreographer debut in 2019 with a hit production of Ain’t Misbehavin’, added: “I cannot WAIT for audiences to see what we’re doing with  The Cher Show . Cher’s music covers so many styles, genres and rhythms, which makes it so exciting to choreograph.

Slade, whose credits also include Curtains and In The Heights , said: “Cher is quite literally a style icon. Her fashion moments pushed the boundaries of the time and continue to do so. The musical premiered in Chicago in July 2018 and made its debut on Broadway five months later. Featuring three actresses, each playing Cher at a different stage in her life, the original Broadway production won two Tony Awards – one for Stephanie J Block for her performance as Star and the other for the production’s costume designer, Cher’s long-time friend and collaborator, fashion designer Bob Mackie.

Millie O'Connell, Debbie Kurup and Danielle Steers.

Cher and share alike: three actors star as the singer in musical that turns back time

The comeback queen is the perfect protagonist for a musical, say The Cher Show’s stars who, led by Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse, are embarking on a mammoth UK tour

Y ou could call them a triple threat. Debbie Kurup, Danielle Steers and Millie O’Connell all play Cher in a new musical about her rise to fame. The Cher Show presents the singer at different points in her career, with versions of her character called Star, Lady and Babe. It opens with Star (Kurup) looking back on her life. “My character draws on the other two to help tell the story,” she explains.

The musical unfolds in chronological order with each era given its own distinctive colours, costumes and set. But O’Connell (Babe, the youngest Cher) explains that the three women are often on stage simultaneously. “We all watch each other’s big moments happen. We’re there to egg the other two on,” she says. “I like the analogy that Cher is watching back a VHS of her life,” adds Steers.

While she loves “belting out” Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), it is the times that the trio sing together “that are really magical” says Steers. They single out the goosebump-inducing Song for the Lonely, which they sing in unison at the end of act one. “Lyrically, it is such an uplifting song,” Kurup says. “At the end, we repeat the words ‘it’s gonna be alright’ – that is an anthem for everyone,” agrees O’Connell.

Cher, Kurup argues, is the perfect protagonist for a musical: “She came from nothing, shot to superstardom and then lost everything – multiple times. Aside from a six-decade career, just being a survivor is a good foundation for any story.” Steers vehemently believes that the hits used in The Cher Show are never shoehorned in, as they are in some jukebox musicals. “The singing doesn’t feel unnatural,” she says. “Often, the songs are in context or they come from a place of real feeling.” Kurup calls it “reductive” to label The Cher Show as such. O’Connell adds: “The scenes are what you’d traditionally see in an intimate, hard-hitting play. We are totally driven by the words and the book written by Rick Elice – and, most importantly, Cher’s life.”

Cher in 1981.

O’Connell, 25, admits she didn’t know much at all about Cher’s history before starting rehearsals: “The Cher I knew was a queer icon. As a queer woman, I gravitated towards that part of her.” Steers – who plays the middle Cher, Lady – says it is her uniquely deep voice that has always captivated her: “There aren’t many women out there that have such a rich alto voice.” Steers used to see the singer “as a goddess warrior – which she is – but now I understand her weakness, too”. Kurup explains that her mother grew up listening to Cher and that love was passed down to her. She says: “Like me, Cher comes from mixed-ethnic origin, she faced bullying at school and had to endure racial prejudice. I share her fighting desire to keep moving forward.”

The show is directed by Arlene Phillips and choreographed by Oti Mabuse . “Arlene is a very physical director – she’ll jump up, script in hand and sing along with us,” says Steers, who adds that “Oti is a ball of sunshine”. They define the rehearsal process as one of co-creation. “Women creating with women is powerful. This is not society’s norm,” O’Connell says. “We’re dismantling expectation just by being in a room together. And, of course, that is very in the spirit of Cher.”

As they prepare to embark on a mammoth UK tour ending this time next year, the trio have some reservations. “It is not the tour itself, but the length of it. I have to just not think about the end date,” Kurup laughs. “I’m a little scared because I’ve not toured before,” adds Steers, but she finds some comfort in the fact that their time on the road is not continuous. “We have a break every three months,” says O’Connell. “I’m excited for the adventure.”

Lucas Rush as Sonny Bono and Millie O’Connell as Babe in The Cher Show.

Gathered in a back room at their rehearsal studio in Borough, south London, the three Chers look totally relaxed in each other’s company. “Collectively, we do lots of tricks before going on stage to get her voice and sound,” O’Connell laughs. But is there a pressure that comes with playing someone so famous? “Oh yeah, there will be scrutiny,” Kurup says. “But, the only thing we can do is focus on being truthful.”

And what does the real Cher make of it all? Though none of the lead cast have met her, they are sure she will come and see the show. “I hope she feels seen and honoured. She’s a diva but also a woman that’s been through a lot,” Kurup says. “We want to do her proud.”

Check out some of Cher's iconic roles below:

The man from u.n.c.l.e. (1967).

Cher's first acting role was an appearance in a 1967 episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. called 'The Hot Number Affair', starring as Ramona the model who captured the attentions of Jerry.

Silkwood (1983)

Cher pushed all the boundaries in her role in Silkwood, a drama inspired by the real-life story of Karen Silkwood. Cher played the lesbian best friend of Karen, who uncovered wrongdoing at a plutonium plant where she worked and was later killed in a car accident. Cher was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 1984 Academy Awards and the 1985 BAFTAs, and won the Golden Globe in 1984.

Mask (1985)

She appeared in 1985 film Mask alongside Sam Elliott, Eric Stoltz and Lauren Dern, based on the real life of Roy L. 'Rocky' Dennis who suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. Cher played his mother, Rusty, and won Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival. She was also nominated for Best Actress at the 1986 Golden Globes.

The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

Cher had a pretty huge 1987 - starring in two other films alongside The Witches of Eastwick. Cher played one of the eponymous witches along with Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon, with Jack Nicholson playing Daryl Van Horne.

Moonstruck (1987)

Another of Cher's 1987 flicks was Moonstruck, in which she starred opposite Nicolas Cage, playing her fiancé's brother who she falls in love with. Cher won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role in 1988, going up against her former co-star and friend Meryl Streep, who was memorably over the moon for Cher. In turn, Cher thanked Meryl in her acceptance speech.

Mermaids (1990)

Cher played the flamboyant mother of two daughters in Mermaids, co-starring Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci as her children and Bob Hoskins as her love interest. Winona and Christina later appeared in the music video for her song 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)', which appeared on the soundtrack for the film.

Will & Grace (2000 & 2002)

One of Cher's most iconic cameos was in Will & Grace, appearing in the show twice as character Jack's (Sean Hayes) favourite singer and role model. The first episode in 2000 called 'Gypsies, Tramps and Weed', named after Cher song 'Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves'. Of the cameo, Cher said, "We did two endings. I improvised one. I hope they show it as an outtake 'cause the audience loved that one more than the one they're gonna show. Instead of the thing I was supposed to do, I did something to Sean – something completely different and he just about passed out. I don't know what possessed me."

Stuck On You (2003)

Cher appeared in 2003's Stuck On You as herself! She starred alongside actors including Matt Damon and Eva Mendes in the comedy film.

Sesame Street (2004)

Anyone who's anyone has appeared on Sesame Street at some point or another in its 50+ year history - and Cher is no exception! She starred in a 2004 episode in a segment called 'My Favorite Sesame Street Moments', saying that she was glad the show existed to cheer her up.

Burlesque (2010)

Cher was in 2010 film Burlesque opposite Christina Aguilera and Kristen Bell, starring as Tess, the dance group leader and club owner.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018)

She may have only been in the film for about 10 minutes near the end, but Cher totally stole the show as Sophie Sheridan's (Amanda Seyfried) grandmother Ruby, singing 'Fernando'. Cher later released an album full of ABBA covers entitled 'Dancing Queen'. She said of the album, "After filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking, 'Why not do an album of their music?' The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I'm so happy with how the music came out. I'm really excited for people to hear it. It's a perfect time."

Bobbleheads: The Movie (2020)

Putting her stunning vocals to even further good use, Cher's voice made an appearance in the recent 2020 film Bobbleheads: The Movie. Cher voiced her very own bobblehead, appearing on stage surrounded by lights and pink smoke! The film featured other famous voices such as Jennifer Coolidge and Anthony DeStefanis.

With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award®, an Emmy®, a Grammy®, three Golden Globes® and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Cher has influenced popular culture more than most.  Her on-screen career started in 1971 with her weekly television show that attracted 30 million viewers a week, and went on to include starring roles in iconic films from Moonstruck , for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress, to Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! , which prompted the New York Magazine to realise “every single movie—no matter how flawless—would be infinitely better if it included Cher.”  Her ‘Farewell Tour’ became the highest-grossing music tour in history – in true Cher fashion, she followed up her ‘Farewell Tour’ with two further sell-out, worldwide arena tours.  She is the only artist in history to have a number one hit in the Billboard chart for six consecutive decades; an achievement that caused Vogue to deem her “eternally relevant and the ruler of outré reinvention”.  She became known as the Queen of Reinvention.

ABOUT THE CHER SHOW

the cher show cast uk tour

Her Life. Her Music. Her Legend. Superstars come and go. Cher is forever. For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture – breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. THE CHER SHOW is the Tony Award®-winning musical of her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the kid starting out, the glam pop star, and the icon.

THE CHER SHOW is 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy®, and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical that will have audiences dancing in the aisles!

Review: THE CHER SHOW at THEATRE UNDER THE STARS

TUTS shares some Cher with us! It's a triple threat and a trio!

pixeltracker

THE CHER SHOW is a theatrical blast of nitrous oxide just when you need it the most. It’s fun, it’s light, it’s fabulous, and it never takes itself too seriously. Anybody who considers themselves a gypsy, tramp, or thief is going to have an amazing time. The musical is strong enough and moves lightning fast, just like Jesse James through the life of Cher. It presents everything as if it were on her SONNY AND CHER variety show through comedy skits and musical numbers. It’s the most fun I have had with a jukebox musical in a long time, and I love that it is here in Houston at the Hobby Center, thanks to TUTS. It turns back time, it makes you believe it’s got you, and bang bang, it shoots you down in the best way possible. Grab your girlfriends, your fabulous gentleman friends, a glass of your favorite beverage, and simply enjoy THE CHER SHOW. Trust me, you’ll have a good time.

I am unsure if I know of any other music diva who needs three different actresses to play her, but Cher seems to have required that. We have not one, not two, but three Chers in this show. And do they trot on, do their part of life, and leave? Heck no! They all talk to each other, advise each other, and sing together all night long. It’s like the three musketCHERs or something! And the funny thing is, this trio really supports each other in the show. They take us through the sprawl of Cher’s ups and downs of six decades in the music business (and still going!). The woman’s career is twice as old as Taylor Swift actually is.

We have “Babe Cher,” played by Ella Perez , the star's youngest version. Ella takes us through the timeline of Cher in school up to when THE SONNY AND CHER show hit the airwaves. She has energy to spare and a surprisingly huge voice coming out of such a small body. Her rendition of “I’ve Got You Babe” is surprisingly adroit and well-rendered. Catherine Ariale portrays “Lady Cher,” who moves through the television years and the dissolution of the marriage with Sonny Bono . She has crack comic timing to sling the one-liners and a wonderful singing voice. She’s also the tallest and the skinniest and looks the best in the Bob Mackie gowns. Then there is “Star Cher,” played by Morgan Scott , who takes us through almost to the current day. She’s the one who can deliver a power ballad, and she also captures the most of Cher’s mannerisms and how we see her today. Singularly, any one of these women could carry the show. Luckily, we get them in a trio for most of the running time. I couldn’t stop smiling. And three Chers are so much better than one! It allows the story room to breathe, actresses to change into wilder outfits, and keeps the pace at a breakneck speed.

Lorenzo Pugliese makes for an uncanny clone of Sonny Bono , save for his very buff gym body. He captures Sonny’s spirit, singing, and stature from real life. The musical truly makes Sonny a “not so bad” guy, save for the business machinations. Mike Bindeman dons a blonde rocker wig to take on Greg Allman, and he’s imposing and every inch the rock god. Charles Blaha brings the  “Bagel Boy” to life to round out Cher’s loves. Out of all these men, though, you get a sense that Tyler Pirrung ’s Bob Mackie does the most for Cher and delivers a lot onstage. But if I had to pick the MVP of the evening in the supporting cast, my choice would easily be Lucy Werner , who plays both Cher’s mom and Lucille Ball . She’s a hoot as either lady! And the woman can sing! It’s no wonder she is an understudy to Star Cher! If Cher feels sick, send in Lucy Werner as Georgia Holt, her mom. Something tells me the real Georgia would approve.

Technically, the set is a ton of video screens to let the scenery change on a dime. It is more concert lighting than theater style for most of the run time. The secret weapon of THE CHER SHOW, though? Bob Mackie ’s incredible costumes! His gowns and creations steal the evening with their wild and over-the-top sequined glory. If you are a fashionista, you will want to sit in the first couple of rows of the orchestra, but even the back row of the highest tier will be dazzled. Man! This show’s clothes are amazing! I think the dresses could tour on their own and cause just as much excitement!

The tour is made up of a lot of younger kids who are hitting the road for the first time, and you feel that energy pumping throughout the evening. I don’t know how, but this company makes Cher feel very young and fresh even when they are playing decades that have long gone. I can see why the real icon is such a fan of this show; it makes her look great. If there is one thing I can criticize is their youth sometimes makes for over-exuberant delivery. Sometimes, the dancing feels just a touch out of control, but it really never bothered me. Polish isn't a top-tier need when you have the passion. I just got a sense they were having a really good time with all of this, and in turn, so did the audience.

There’s nothing deep or revelatory here. Cher is a mistress of pop music, and it is no surprise this is a musical that has low-stakes dramatically. We all know Cher will be just fine, and there’s no real terror or horrible things that happen to her. If anything, it is remarkable that it makes Cher just seem like a human and, at times, a regular girl who has stage fright and a strong case of imposter syndrome. She’s suddenly relatable, and that’s what you get when you see three talented women take on one icon surrounded by passionate performers. You also have a ton of fun!

THE CHER SHOW, presented by TUTS, runs at THE HOBBY CENTER until April 28th. Tickets can be bought through the link below. There are self-parking and valet options on-site. Wear whatever you like! It’s Cher!

‘SNL’ star explains why she broke during ‘Beavis & Butt-Head’ skit: Buzz

"Saturday Night Live" cast member Heidi Gardner, right, cracks up after seeing "SNL" castmate Mikey Day as Butt-Head in a "Beavis & Butt-Head" skit with Ryan Gosling. NBC video still

‘SNL’ star explains why she broke during ‘Beavis & Butt-Head’ skit

“Saturday Night Live” cast members are encouraged not to laugh during skits — Jimmy Fallon was notorious for always breaking character — but sometimes it’s just too funny. That’s why Heidi Gardner absolutely lost it during the most recent “SNL” episode’s “Beavis & Butt-Head” sketch, starring Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day as live-action versions of the MTV cartoon.

Gardner played a NewsNation host interviewing Kenan Thompson about A.I. in front of an audience that included two guests who strongly resembled Beavis and Butt-Head. She told Vulture that she had seen Gosling and Day in their full prosthetic makeup, despite some viewers assuming she was seeing it for the first time on Saturday.

Gardner said Day’s exposed gums and teeth made her laugh uncontrollably both during the dress rehearsal and the live taping.

“This makes me feel almost even worse and unprofessional. When I looked and saw Mikey in the dress rehearsal, I lost it. I was shocked,” Gardner said Tuesday. “I’m thinking about it right now and laughing. I recovered and tried to tell myself in between dress and the live show,  You can’t laugh like that again.  I was trying to imagine seeing him in my head so I was prepared for it, but I just couldn’t prepare for what I saw. I really tried. I even saw Mikey out of the corner of my eye seconds before I went live. I saw the red shorts. I knew I couldn’t look over there again. Mikey even told me later that he was bending down and hiding himself so I wouldn’t see him.”

Gardner said she was in “shock” afterwards: “Then the anxiety set in and I was like, ‘Oh my God, was that okay?’ ... So many other writers and cast members came up and said, ‘Good job.’ I’m like, ‘What? I actually didn’t do my job.’”

But sometimes cast members breaking makes a skit even more memorable. Some of “SNL’s” most famous skits include Chris Farley as Matt Foley (“ Van Down by the River ”), which made co-star David Spade cover his face to stifle a laugh, and Christopher Walken’s “ More Cowbell ” with Will Ferrell, where Fallon completely lost his composure.

Gardner also told Vulture that “Beavis & Butt-Head” was a gag that Day and “SNL” writer Streeter Siedell had been pitching for five years, including at table reads and rehearsals, but never making it to air. She was previously written in as an audience member, but the bit took a new shape when Gosling agreed to do it.

“I hope, for those guys and their portrayals of Beavis and Butt-Head, that it helped how shocked I was by how funny they were,” she told the publication. “And I hope it helps people think of the sketch. I’ll never be able to shake looking over my shoulder and seeing what I saw. That’s really special.”
