For their penultimate adventure, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are off to Africa and it'll no doubt be an outing to remember.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job will see the trio head to the remote African country of Mauritania, where they follow in the footsteps of the Paris-Dakar rally – but, of course, there is a twist.

The group must complete their journey in cheap modified sports cars instead of bespoke Dakar racers, beginning with the world's longest train.

Battling scorching temperatures and unforgiving sand terrain, filming this special was a true test for both the presenters and their cars.

The episode will be available to watch on Prime Video on Friday 16th February , and comes after the news that Jeremy Clarkson has made the decision to quit the series .

In an interview with The Times , Clarkson explained that his reason for leaving the show was largely down to having already "done everything you can do" when it comes to cars.

He said: "I've driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else. We’ve done everything you can do with a car. When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air."

Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond in 'The Grand Tour' on Prime Video

When does the final episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ season 5 come out?

Mateusz Miter

Fans of The Grand Tour are highly anticipating the release of the show’s fourth and final episode of season 5, which takes place in Zimbabwe. Emotions will be at an all-time high since it’s the end of the show.

For over 20 years, the unforgettable trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have entertained millions of fans around the world with shows revolving around cars. It was first known as Top Gear and aired on BBC before the trio was acquired by Amazon in 2016. Now, after eight wonderful years with the studio, the trio is set to finish the series once and for all, and it will all come to a head in episode 4 of season 5.

A few details about the upcoming episode are known. For starters, we’re certain it’s taking Clarkson , May, and Hammond back to Africa. This time they will be exploring Zimbabwe, for which the filming took place in September last year. A fair amount of time has passed since then, so we’re bound to know the release date of the episode, right?

When will ‘The Grand Tour’s season 5, episode 4 be released?

Unfortunately, as of June, we’re yet to know the exact release date of the latest episode of The Grand Tour . Amazon did reveal that the final outing will premiere in 2024, though the studio hasn’t shed any further details.

The previous, penultimate episode named The Grand Tour: Sand Job took place in Mauritania and saw the three hosts take a trip through the Sahara desert. It released in February, and only increased fans’ appetite for one last ride together.

Unluckily, all we can do for now is wait patiently. If you’re like us and don’t like sitting and just waiting, we’d advise you to rewatch all the previous episodes of The Grand Tour . We are certainly doing that before we have to say one final goodbye to Clarkson, May, and Hammond.

comments

Fans of the Grand Tour, rejoice! The first details of their next special, which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video next month, have been revealed.

Amazon Studios has announced that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May will return to screens with a new special episode entitled “Eurocrash.” The standalone feature will reportedly see the trio take three unlikely cars on a 1,400-mile journey across Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia.

In terms of cars, it would appear that Hammond has opted to pilot a rather yellow Chevrolet SSR — a retro-inspired, if short-lived, pickup made by Chevy between 2003 and 2006.

Clarkson appears to have gone for a left-field option of a Mitsuoka Le-Seyde, a limited-to-500 Japanese-made creation that, despite its retro-bodywork, is based on a Nissan Silvia S13.

Finally, James May is seen posing in front of what appears to be another oddity that time has forgotten: a Crosley Convertible from the 1940s. Crosley was an American manufacturer of small, borderline “micro” cars, while this example likely sports a 724-cc engine with just 26 hp.

We’re promised the usual hijinks from the three, featuring the appearance of a “famous racing driver” and the sampling of some “Soviet-style” Formula 1.

It’s still unclear whether Amazon will continue working with Clarkson after reports the streaming giant was considering cutting ties with the presenter following his controversial (and since retracted) remarks towards Meghan Markle. Variety had previously reported that Amazon and Clarkson would not long work together beyond the currently commissioned episodes of The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm, which includes four more GT specials and a third series of the critically acclaimed farming show.

Filming for another Grand Tour special in Africa seemingly wrapped last week, where Reddit users spotted the trio in Mauritania with a Jaguar F-Type and Maserati Gran Cabrio. That episode will presumably air in late 2023 or early 2024.

Meanwhile, you can catch their European road trip premiering on Friday, June 16th, on Prime Video.

There is no doubt these guys know how to make a beautiful car film. Stunning stuff. Loved the fun film like the Tom Cruise movie… you know, Cocktail. Nothing scripted here… no sir, just factual entertainment. 🙂 I’m not sure about the celebrity brain squeeze bit… it has been 2 episodes and it already feels old and tired.

This episode was brilliant. Miles better than the first which was already awesome. But that Aston is plain stupid. 1.8mil and all you get is 0-60 in 2.9 and 208 mph.

Jeremy Clarkson Confirms The Grand Tour’s Final Episode on Amazon Prime

TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson has confirmed the end of The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime after next year. This announcement marks the conclusion of a series beloved by fans since its inception in 2016.

Key Takeaways:

  • End of The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, along with co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May , will no longer film new series of The Grand Tour after next year, following a decision by Amazon Prime’s executives. This marks the end of a popular show that started in 2016 and quickly garnered a devoted fanbase.
  • Fan Reactions and Future Prospects: Fans expressed their disappointment and gratitude on social media, reflecting on the impact the show had on their lives. Despite the end of this era, there’s speculation that Amazon Prime may revive The Grand Tour with new hosts, a move reportedly welcomed by the current presenters.
  • Clarkson’s Future Endeavours: Clarkson mentioned a focus on his other project, ‘Clarkson’s Farm’, and there are two more special episodes of The Grand Tour slated for release, featuring travels to Mauritania and Zimbabwe.

the grand tour africa

TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, renowned for his role in the popular car show The Grand Tour alongside Richard Hammond and James May, has recently spoken about the future of the series. The show, which began on Amazon Prime in 2016, has been a fan favourite but will see no further series after next year. This decision, made by the streaming platform’s bosses, brings an end to a series that has been both entertaining and influential for car enthusiasts.

Clarkson shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating:

“Been a busy day. No more Grand Tour after next year but a LOT more Clarkson’s Farm. Which, this evening, is looking extremely lovely.”

This post quickly became a hub for fans to express their feelings about the series ending. The emotional reactions ranged from sadness over the show’s conclusion to appreciation for the years of entertainment it provided.

One fan commented:

the grand tour africa

“Please start a podcast with the three of you, it can just be called the news and you rant for an hour about cars.”

Others expressed their gratitude:

“The end of Clarkson, Hammond and May in whatever it’s called is a sad day. Thank you for everything you did for petrolheads. And now farmheads!”

The influence of the trio was evident in another fan’s words:

“It’s really nice coming to the comments and seeing how these 3 impacted the lives of so many. These lads got me through countless dark times with laughter and endless banter. We all knew the day was coming, and the truest of fans will wish you, Hammond, May, and indeed all of the crew that made the magic happen the absolute best in the next stage. Thank you for inspiring countless enthusiasts around the world.”

Despite Clarkson’s announcement, there’s talk that Amazon Prime might continue The Grand Tour with new hosts. An insider revealed:

“It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.”

This potential revival aligns with the presenters’ acceptance of passing the torch to a new generation.

“The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following. But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue,” a source informed The Sun. “They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.”

As fans prepare to bid farewell to this iconic trio, they can look forward to two more special episodes of The Grand Tour, showcasing the team’s adventures in Mauritania and Zimbabwe. This farewell follows their departure from Top Gear in 2015, after a disagreement with producers.

The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are back on the road

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond talk about poor car choices and camping in the African desert in the latest Grand Tour. Jessica Rawnsley reports.

The vrooms of fast cars from our TVs is set to become much quieter when The Grand Tour makes an exit. Fronted by the beloved trio Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, the decade-spanning show has seen the car enthusiasts criss-cross the globe, reviewing Italian classics, muscle cars and pick-up trucks in some of the remotest corners of the planet.

But it’s not over til it’s over. The penultimate episode of the Amazon Prime series, The Grand Tour: Sand Job, sees the trio race across the wild and arid stretches of Mauritania in north-western Africa.

Rumbling along the tracks of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, across the undulating dunes of the Sahara Desert, treacherous river crossings and steep ravines, their trusty steeds are not bespoke Dakar racers but cheap modified second-hand sports cars.

“I love deserts so I’ve always wanted to do the Sahara,” Clarkson, 63, says of the road trip. “And then it was really a question of finding the most inappropriate cars for trans-Sahara travel, and I think we did a pretty good job on that.”

“We actually all quite like being in the desert,” adds May, 61. “We like the dust and the sand and the heat. It’s exhausting but it’s all the things that TE Lawrence talked about – he said ‘the desert cleans you and it’s pure’ and I think that’s true. We all slightly get off on that and feel like we’re being really heroic and manly.”

The three picked different sports cars for the adventure, to varying levels of success. Clarkson opted for a Jaguar F Type V6, Hammond an Aston Martin Volante V12 and May an Italian Maserati.

He was so impressed by the Jaguar, Clarkson bought one as soon as he got back home. “And I don’t think Hammond bought an Aston Martin afterwards,” he jibes. “The other two made unwise choices as usual. The Jaguar was so tough and unbreakable… I cannot lavish enough praise on that car. I brought back the one I drove in Mauritania too – have it at the farm.

“Hammond in particular had constant issues. It started off being funny and then it became annoying because it was relentlessly unreliable.”

“There was the odd issue,” admits Hammond, 54. “It turns out an elderly V12 engine isn’t the best place to start when you want a rugged machine for crossing deserts. A Toyota Landcruiser is where people ordinarily go, not a hand-built, British-engineered, luxury GT. I did ask quite a lot of my car.

“The problem with my car is that it came from an era where the whole idea of computers running the show was taking hold. So cars were becoming clever but mine hadn’t become quite clever enough. It would have been better to have had something earlier or later. Mine was exactly the wrong period, when it thought it was clever, but it wasn’t.”

For May, it was refreshing not being the one left behind. “It was long overdue,” he says. “I’ve been left behind in quite a few other things due to poor choices. So it was quite gratifying and also slightly surprising because of all those cars you’d expect the Maserati to be the unreliable one; they do have a bit of a reputation for fragility.”

Camping in the desert hit differently for Clarkson and Hammond.

Calling himself a “boy scout,” Hammond says he relished the quiet nights in his tent. “I’m never happier than when I’m packing my bag and I’m wrapping up my best pen knife and a collapsible stove and a little bag to put things in to keep them dry,” he elaborates. “I like a sleeping bag and a torch. I love all things to do with camping… There were evenings when it was quieter and things were smaller, and I was in my funny little tent on my car on my own and I’m very, very happy doing that. ”

Clarkson, on the other hand, was not so camping-inclined. Neither was May, who described it as “awful”. “Camping is always ghastly,” Clarkson says. “But when you’re in the middle of the Sahara Desert, you have no alternative. There are no hotels, there are no guest houses or even restaurants or shops. It’s very much the opposite of, say, Luxembourg.”

And the blistering heat was another challenge. “It was bloody tough,” Clarkson admits. “We drank litres and litres of water and we didn’t pee. I mean, I don’t know where it was going. Hammond said after three or four days, ‘I’m going to have a pee’ and I suddenly thought ‘I haven’t had a pee this whole time.’”

Despite the desert heat, tent accommodation and endless Hammond breakdowns, the road trip holds a special place in the presenters’ hearts.

“This special treads that path that we’ve travelled very carefully,” says Hammond, “which is that you don’t have to be a car nerd to watch the show because we do that for you. That’s been our motto, spoken and unspoken, for all the years we’ve done it because it’s in our blood, it’s in our hearts – and you can see it.”

“It was honestly hilarious,” continues Clarkson. “Hammond’s Aston endlessly breaking down was very funny.

“Listen, when we do these things, it is a laugh from start to finish. We know what we’re doing and we do enjoy one another’s company. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been doing it for 25 years. It was tremendous. It was a big laugh.”

“When we started the journey, I think we all wondered if it was going to be a little bit too difficult for the cars that we’d chosen,” May relates. “We do tend to be a bit optimistic and we tend to push complications to one side and hope that somebody will deal with them.

“So I was quite pleased that it ended up being a good adventure. It’s a very long special because there’s a lot of material. We always tell ourselves we don’t actually need to do 1,200 miles or whatever, because we have enough adventure in 200 miles to make it special. But we still go back and do 1,200 miles because either we like it or we’re a bit stupid.”

GRETHE HUTT-SCHONKEN

Born 1916, Died 2014

Extract from ‘Dances of Black Africa, Art and Text by Grethe Hutt-Schonken’, 1976, Educational Consortium of America

Grethe Hutt-Schonken was born near the border of what is now Lesotho in Southern Africa. Both her parents were physicians in private practice – her mother the first woman doctor to practice in the interior of Africa. Her father was intensely interested in anthropology and natural history, and often took time off from his medical practice for expeditions into the interior where he would gather specimens of rock engraving and plants for his own study or for museums. Young Grethe often accompanied him on these expeditions where her own interest in the folklore and artefacts of Africa developed.

After a period of schooling in the Netherlands, she became a journalist and illustrator of children’s books. Later she studied art in London, Paris and Munich.

Again, she undertook a series of expeditions into the interior of Africa. Her fascination with native carving and painting continued to grow. On one occasion Grethe Hutt-Schonken made a solo journey through Africa from Uganda southward, using local means of transportation and closely observing the art and folklore of the various countries through which she travelled.

For many years now the subject matter of her painting has been the ethnic cultures of Black Africa. She has had many one-man shows, including exhibits in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and Namibia (South West Africa), and has had her work accepted for international exchange exhibitions in West Germany, Jugoslavia, and Australia, and for the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil. Several of her works are in the permanent collection of the London County Council.

Since coming to the United States, Grethe Hutt-Schonken has had one-man shows in Washington D.C., Texas A&M University, the University of Dallas, where her husband, William H. Hutt is Distinguished Professor of Economics) and two shows in Palo Alto, California.

Speaking of her own art, Grethe Hutt-Schonken says that she has been inspired by the spontaneous creations of the anonymous African tribal artists. Her paintings reflect not only the eerie and sombre characteristics of those native creations, but also their humour and vivacity. The bright colours she favours express her own tastes as well as the vivid hues typical of tribal dress in most areas of the African interior.
