THE CRUEL SEA announce ‘THE HONEYMOON IS OVER 30th ANNIVERSARY NATIONAL TOUR 2023’
29 August 2023 The Rockpit
It’s been 30 years since the release of The Cruel Sea’s phenomenal, 5 x ARIA Award-winning / Triple Platinum album, The Honeymoon Is Over. While the five-piece were already a fixture on the live scene with two acclaimed albums, it was their 1993 third studio album, produced by Tony Cohen, that thrust the band into the spotlight and firmly planted itself in the Top 40 charts for two years after its release.
Amid a flurry of excitement on socials with news The Honeymoon Is Over was to be re-issued in June this year, as a special 30th Anniversary Deluxe 2CD release and available on Vinyl for the very first time, fans also recounted stories of seeing the band live throughout the years, with many calling for an anniversary tour.
To celebrate the anniversary of their landmark album, The Cruel Sea are set to reunite for a national tour this November/December, featuring Tex Perkins (Vox), Jim Elliot (Drums), Ken Gormley (Bass) and Dan Rumour (Guitar), together with Matt Walker (Guitar) filling in for the much-loved & revered James Cruickshank. Fans can expect to hear plenty of favourites from The Honeymoon Is Over, as well as a selection of songs across their entire catalogue.
“Well, I’m not sure what I’ve done, but life keeps handing me gifts! Being a musician, the greatest gifts I can get involve people and Music. But really, what else is there? To play with The Cruel Sea was something I wasn’t sure would ever happen again. But believe me it’s happening.
Rehearsals have been powerful, emotional and joyful! The Cruel Sea have a sound that can’t be found anywhere else! (I still feel like a guest singer) I love that sound and I love the guys that make it! And I can’t wait to share this with you all! See you soon, yeah?” TEX PERKINS

'We weren't sure it would ever happen' — Tex Perkins on The Cruel Sea's first reunion in over a decade
- X (formerly Twitter)
For the first time in a decade, Australian rock legends The Cruel Sea are back together.
"We weren't really sure it would ever happen," frontman Tex Perkins tells Double J's Karen Leng.
If there were ever a time for it to happen, 2023 seems appropriate as the band celebrate 30 years since the release of their enormously successful third studio album The Honeymoon Is Over .
"We were pushed along by a promoter, Duane McDonald, who said to me a couple of years ago, 'You know, you should get The Cruel Sea [back together for] the 30th anniversary of The Honeymoon Is Over '.
"I said it was not as simple as that. James Cruickshank has died [he died of bowel cancer in 2015]. Danny [Rumour, guitarist] lives off the grid, nobody knows where he is, and we don't know whether he's played music in years.
"It wasn't just like, 'Oh yeah, just chuck the band back together', there were a few things to get over. I eventually called Dan and he was just like, 'Yeah, let's do it'."
There's something to be said for an extended hiatus. Pursuing a creative practice can be more of a grind than many suspect, and even in a band of as supreme quality as The Cruel Sea, things get tired.
With the benefit of a decade's distance, Tex Perkins is feel very excited about reacquainting himself with both the art and those who make it.
"I've gained a new appreciation for not only the music itself, but all the individual players as musicians," he says. "You do 1,000 gigs with people and you sort of get used to it, you lose the wonder of it. I'm back just going, 'Wow'.
"They're such individual players, Jim [Elliott] the drummer, nobody plays like that. Kenny [Gormly], the bass player, nobody plays like Kenny. But especially Danny Rumour, who was the core sound of The Cruel Sea.
"It's just been so beautiful for me. Not only are they amazing individually but, when it comes together and how it fits together… I'm freshly fascinated by it."
There are plenty of upsides to having a hit record. One of the few downsides is the omnipresence of that work, and the never-ending demands to play it at every opportunity.
For The Cruel Sea, it didn't take them long to tire of their enduring, ARIA winning (we'll get to that) single 'The Honeymoon Is Over'.
"Once you create something, you're sick to death of it really," Perkins says. "Especially that song, at one stage we were like, 'Actually, we're not going to play this' and would outrage people.
"But lately I listened to that album and a few other things with The Cruel Sea and, with so much distance, I could listen to it quite objectively and I can see why it worked."
Joining The Cruel Sea: 'I resisted for a long time'
Tex Perkins was not a founding member of The Cruel Sea. He was a fan of the then-instrumental group before becoming their frontman.
"The Cruel Sea started in '87, I think that's when I first saw them," he says. "My friend Peter Read was their mixer, and I went around to his place one afternoon, and he said, 'I've got to go mix a band at the Harold Park Hotel'.
"I said, 'I'll come with you' and he said, 'Nah, you wouldn't like them'. For some reason, I insisted and turned up the Harold Park and this instrumental band played.
"Peter was mixing and there happened to be a very simple lighting console next to it, and nobody operating it, so I just started doing their lights."
"It was a residency at the Harold Park and I just came back each week. I instantly loved them and became friends with them."
Perkins had already made a couple of albums with the Beasts of Bourbon and terrorised audiences as part of Tex Deadly & the Dum-Dums, Salamander Jim, and Thug, a kind of gnarled industrial duo he formed with Read.
His love of the band and experience as a frontman made him a reasonable choice to join as the band's vocalist, but his musical pedigree made it a less convincing proposition for some.
"I guess it was inevitable that we would do something," he considers. "I wasn't welcomed straight away, because at the time I was in bands like Thug, which was just complete chaos and noise and stupidity. That's what I was known for. 'What do we need that guy for?'
"Eventually the idea of me getting up and singing a song with them was presented to me, but I resisted for a long time. Because I loved them so much the way they were. I knew, once you put any singer in the mix, that period would end."
A year and a half after that first night at the Harold Park Hotel, Tex Perkins was singing lyrics he'd concocted to go with the band's song 'King Tide' at a party in Sydney.
"I wanted to be another instrument," Perkins says of his approach to the band at first. "I just wanted to add to it, because the atmosphere was already there. I wanted to join it, rather than come in on top of it and take it somewhere else and tell a different story or make it about me."
A missing ARIA and a pound of pot
The Cruel Sea will play The Honeymoon Is Over in its entirety at their upcoming shows, a record that netted them five ARIAs. Not that they managed to keep hold of them all.
"I'll try and present the whole picture," Perkins laughs. "An ARIA award was left at an after party. We had five and I was carrying two around. They're very heavy and pointy and should not be in the hands of drunk people."
Despite the fact this story has been told many times over in the past couple of years, Perkins still regales it with gleeful incredulity.
"A few days later, triple j announced that there was a ransom demand, that somebody had the ARIA and would give it back if their ransom demands were met," he continues.
"One of them was Michael Bolton's work permit must be revoked – not something we had control over – and that James Cruickshank had to be reinstated into the band.
"Weirdly enough, we just forgot about it. We didn't follow it up."
Until 27 years later, when Perkins started receiving some curious messages.
"Two Decembers ago, people started contacting me saying, 'Hey, there's an ARIA award on Facebook Marketplace. I think it might be yours. It's for Song Of The Year, 'The Honeymoon Is Over'. They've got a starting price at $1. It was found in a bin'.
"The bin was behind Sony Records. We were on Polydor.
"But the plot thickens even further. [ex-triple j announcer] Angela Catterns, told me that somebody from triple j had the ARIA and sold it to somebody else. She says – this sounds unlikely – for a pound of marijuana. That's a lot of marijuana. It's like a pillowcase."
The band negotiated to get the award back from Ernie, the man who found it in the bin behind Sony. There were no hard feelings at this point. If anything, Perkins remains eager to know what happened to that statue in the 27 years it was missing.
"I'm just fascinated with its journey," he says. "Maybe it went around the world?
A race with Mick Jagger
Tex Perkins has a million great stories from over 40 years in rock'n'roll. His book Tex is one hell of a read for anyone who wants to hear them.
We couldn't let him go without one story from The Cruel Sea's time supporting rock royalty The Rolling Stones back in 1995.
" It was the Voodoo Lounge tour, and the green room was called the Voodoo Lounge," he recalls. It entailed vast bain maries with food and couches and televisions and pot plants and video games: particularly one called Daytona, which I was quite adept at."
His skill at Daytona was clearly not common knowledge, because some bloke walked right into that green room and laid down a challenge.
"I happened to be standing talking to Jim, our drummer, and in comes Mick Jagger: 'How you doin' fellas. Fancy a game?' And I said, 'Shit yeah!'.
"In I hopped, and it was so embarrassing. He drove like a blind grandmother. I lapped him, and I had to slow down, so I wouldn't lap him twice. Jim lent down and said [to Mick], 'He spent a lot of money getting that good, you know?'."

The Cruel Sea review – Tex Perkins shakes off the rust to kick off 30th anniversary tour
Fortitude Music Hall, Brisbane Celebrating three decades of their album The Honeymoon Is Over, the beloved 90s outfit searches for their old magic – with moments of whomping success
- Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email
O utside the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane’s biggest nightclub strip, two hours before showtime, a long line snakes up and around Brunswick Street Mall. It’s been well over a decade since the Cruel Sea played here, and the 3,000-capacity venue is soon overflowing to the point of feeling oversold.
It’s a reminder of just how big the Tex Perkins-fronted outfit was in their heyday. They’re back to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Honeymoon Is Over, their biggest album by far. Other than a low-key warm-up for a wildlife charity, this is the first of a half-dozen gigs that may or may not point to a second life for the band. There’s nerves, and some rust.
The audience, overwhelmingly in their 50s and 60s, are showing signs of wear too. The Cruel Sea were a strictly gen X, very Australian phenomenon. After the title track of Honeymoon became a hit – one of those songs that still appears on Triple M’s so-called Ozzest 100 – the Cruel Sea rode the wave until the end of the millennium, then vanished like smoke.
Tonight’s set is dedicated to keyboardist and guitarist James Cruickshank, who died in 2015; he’s replaced by Matt Walker, who ambles on stage with the band’s original trio: guitarist Dan Rumour, bass player Ken Gormly and drummer Jim Elliott. They slide into Shadder, one of a handful of instrumentals from arguably the band’s best album, This Is Not the Way Home.
The crowd is impatient. Then Perkins struts on and the energy in the room instantly lifts. Over the course of a 21-song set, he periodically wanders off to let the band play a few more of the surf, swamp and spaghetti-western themes he first saw them playing in a Sydney pub in 1988.
Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning
But the crowd’s restlessness is a reminder that without the charisma of Perkins, they’d still be in the corner of the Harold Park hotel where they began. He’s looking lean and fit and loose – but nervous, too – as the band moves into It’s Alright (Cause She Loves Me), which Perkins sings in a higher register than usual.
You can see them looking at each other, searching for the old magic as they struggle with the stage sound and Perkins tries to find his way back inside the old songs. When it all clicks, they hit it out of the park: the whomping groove of Delivery Man; the snap, crackle and bop of Don’t Sell It, punctuated by a rap lifted from another of Perkins’ bands, Beasts of Bourbon.
Better Get a Lawyer is introduced with a nod to Perkins’ Brisbane roots and the city’s bad old days. “Where would I be without the Queensland police?” he wonders rhetorically. “I’d still be here if it wasn’t for the Queensland police! They made me run away. Them, and the Catholics.” Perkins is one of many musicians from his era who never returned.
after newsletter promotion
The band knows what they’re good at, and what the crowd wants. Songs are overwhelmingly drawn from the band’s first three albums, including the rarely played title track of Down Below. Again, Perkins sings this in a higher register, closer to Jimmy Little’s angelic cover, before he slips back into a familiar baritone growl for the song’s last verse.
A six-song encore tests the crowd’s patience. Perkins has a short break while the rest tackle High Plains Drifter and 4, which stumbles to its conclusion. But they finish strongly: Honeymoon’s sultry closing track, Blame it On the Moon, is stunning, before their cover of Captain Beefheart’s Sure ’Nuff’n’Yes I Do bids the crowd back into the steamy subtropical night.

THE CRUEL SEA ANNOUNCE THE HONEYMOON IS OVER 30th ANNIVERSARY NATIONAL TOUR 2023
See you soon, yeah?”

The honeymoon is over... Atmos 6s woes.

Earlier this season I upgraded into a Mizuno ST190G from an older TEE XCG6.
I bought the Mizuno with a Fuji Atmos Black 6s, and after a decent round or two with it, I cant seem hit this club to save my life. There's no freedom in my swing as I feel I need to steer it to get it to do anything remotely like what I want.
I came from a Matrix Ozik HD 6.1, or what would later renamed the Red Tie, from what I understand. I still game the same generation TEE 3 wood, with the same shaft, and it still works for me.
My question is: Are these two shafts that much different? I'm wondering about flex points between the two and how that's impacting what's going on.
And I've tried not to blame the arrow, but I'm feeling that the kick point in the Atmos is just way too low and loose. I've struggled with catching the ball high on the face, and even hit the ground once or twice, which is absolutely not a normal miss for me.
For reference, I'm 6', pretty strong, and normal driver swing is around 102?ish. (Haven't been on a monitor in ages) Good, controlled drives are in the 280-290 range.

Are you playing the tour spec version of the ATMOS or the '6S' retail version?

Funny you mention this... I've always loved the Fujikura motore line... the atmos was supposed to be similar. It isn't. Its a huge disappointed to me. I've tried to love the black and the blue versions multiple times, but sold the black one last week and the blue one today. They are loose and not accurate.

Agreed. I would look at weight, both swing and total, before anything else, as well as playing length. A taller, stronger player can really suffer if something gets too light, and it only takes several grams outside of your normal comfort zone to throw you off. See if you can measure as much as you can with both clubs to compare.

It’s funny you say that, I got the atmos based on Fuji’s recommendations that atmos is similar. And I actually do find it similar but have had better results with the atmos. Different strokes.
The red tie would be classified as a mid launch and mid spin shaft. Atmos black is a low/low shaft. They will feel very different.
Atmos black will have a stiffer tip section. Don't know enough about the red tie's EI profile to say much more.
Ideally, it would probably be best to get fitted by a pro, but the "Rona lockdown is slowing that down.
I'm going to split the heads and check weights of them and the shafts separately. The Mizuno head feels heavier by a fair margin, but I'm wondering if that can be attributed to the flex point of the Atmos.
My buddy has a new SIM with the Diamana S+ Limited in it, and it feels much more stable than the Atmos, and somewhat similar to my Matrix. I'd be curious to compare the profiles between the three and see if there's a certain trait that stands out.
I'll definitely be interested to see those measurements. Its pretty rare for a difference in shaft profile to be the difference between "good" and "can't hit it to save my life".
I've been testing shafts from a stock Tensei Blue all the way down to a Ventus Black and ATMOS Black and they all perform pretty much the same - but with small variations in spin/distance and flight/dispersion.
If you have the XCG6 stock shaft I believe it was a made for model. That being said, and totally irrelevant, but I loved that driver.

It was a made for model, for sure. So it could possibly be just about anything in there.
So I finally got a minute to compare my old TEE against the ST190G, and the Mizuno is almost 1" shorter. I bought it off of the 'Bay, and it showed up still in plastic, etc etc...
The Mizuno website lists stock shafts at 44" and D4 SW. I measure the Atmos that came in it at 43" + or - 1/8th depending on how you want to measure it.
Anyone know if the Mizunos are shipped shorter?
The atmos TS line are great shafts. Profiles really are a just about what you to feel and how you load and release the club. The atmos black tour spec is anything but “loose”. If your having trouble finding good contact, you can try different profiles, or go up a weight class.
The atmos shaft is one I toyed with in the bag and it didn’t agree with me. Moved into a ventus and all problems solved
102mph isn't reaching 290yds.. maybe the shaft is a little strong for you?
nikeblades00
I have the atmos ts black 6s in my speedzone and I've never felt more confident with the driver. I love this shaft. Feels better than the smoke and diamana whiteboard that I use to game. My stock swing speed about 105ish. And im not gettimg 280-290 on average like you.
Not sure a shaft is going to cause to cause issues such as hitting the ground. Different shafts will suit different swings better/worse depending several variables, but it isn’t going to cause major differences in contact, especially at a 102 mph swing speed.
Shaft selection is a fine tuning exercise to maximize launch and spin, but they surely don’t effect swing or ball contact. I think sometimes too much credit/blame is put on a shaft.
Not sure about that if my experience today was anything to show for it.
I regularly play an ATMOS Blue TS 6s myself (also about 102 swing speed), and I had a round today with a bunch of really good drives. Afterwards, while still feeling physically good, I go to my local PGATSS and try out the Mavrik and the SIM. Evenflow Riptide and PX Hzrdus Yellow Shaft respectively.
I hit the Mavrik pretty decently, but the standard SIM? I couldn't hit ball properly at all. Everything happened, fat shots, crown hits, you name it...I could not get the timing right.
I put the entire blame on the shaft in this case.

Switched to an Atmos Red TS stiff and it’s an excellent combo. Getting great distance and accuracy. I played Diamana Blue for years. The Atmos line is pretty similar performance for me. But I definitely prefer the Atmos TS Blue or Red to the Black.

I guess we will agree to disagree. If you can put a sky mark as well as hit a driver fat and find a way to blame it on the shaft, I guess I have been missing out all these years.
The shaft isn’t moving the driver head around all that much, whether it is the correct shaft for your swing or not. Enough to affect some spin and launch, but surely not enough to put a sky mark or cause a fat shot. That would be caused by a bad swing and operator error.
Put it in the right forum and you might get more answers
What head did you pair Atmos Red TS with?
Probably just didnt suit the feel you prefer. The ts black has a more uniform feel where the blue and red have more of a distinct kick.
I currently game the Mizzy st190 with atmos black ts 6. Probably the best shaft I've ever hit for me. I also tried the atmos blue ts and hated the shaft, I had thought the I'd like the blue better. I tried numerous shaft combos with the 190, the black ts felt the best and produced best results. I play at 44.5" D2.

Yo. Agreed. Little more torque in the Blue and Red. I am not knocking the Black. In a higher loft it might work for me in stiff, not X. I think these are really great shafts. But torque is a weird thing: Too much and it feels whippy to me, but low torque is also bad because I don’t like it.
So the combo of the low-launching 9 degree Srixon head seems to work well with the mid-launching Red Tour Spec. All I know is I am hitting it as far as I ever have and it feels nice. I think the Blue would fairly similar. There is not a huge difference in launch between them.
To answer swooshLT, mine is paired with a Srixon z585 head. Underrated bomber!

Choosing a Dream Honeymoon Over a Lavish Wedding
With the cost of weddings on the rise, some couples are skipping big celebrations and prioritizing travel instead.
By Brianna Holt
In October 2023, Oscar Avilez Marquina and Luis Lopez, newlyweds from New York, flew to Europe to spend two weeks on a city-hopping tour between Nice, France; Paris; and Amsterdam. JetBlue had just launched direct flights to Paris from Kennedy International Airport, and the deal was too good for the couple to pass on.
“Going to Paris has always been a dream for me and for Luis as well,” said Mr. Avilez Marquina, 30, who is currently unemployed. “I’m so happy that the first time we got to visit, it was together because that’s going to become a core memory that we’re going to look back on for years to come.”
The decision to have a trans-Atlantic honeymoon is one the couple prioritized after eloping on Feb. 2, 2022, at the Durham Courthouse in Durham, N.C., with two friends as witnesses.
“We had talked about having a wedding and what that would look like,” Mr. Avilez Marquina said. “And after many discussions and sort of understanding the anxiety of having one, we decided to go to a courthouse and focus on what we really love to do, which is traveling and enjoying each other’s company.”
Ultimately, the cost of having a bigger wedding drove the couple away from the idea, with Mr. Lopez estimating a $60,000 budget for a larger party.
“That’s basically what my student loans cost,” said Mr. Lopez, 30, an accountant. “I had to ask myself, do I get married or do I pay my student loans? And is it worth spending that much money on something that’s only going to last a few hours?”
Instead, the couple combined their travel miles and spent a total of $2,000 on their honeymoon trip.
The average cost of a wedding in the United States last year was $35,000, according to the Knot . Also, the average student loan borrower in 2023 owed $37,338 in federal student loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative . With persistent inflation , paying for a lavish wedding celebration has become financially unattainable for some couples. However, many others have found that splurging on a dream honeymoon is more affordable and less stressful to plan than an extravagant wedding.
While thinking about a wedding to her college sweetheart, Haley Black, a full-time content creator, decided she didn’t want one. Her childhood fantasy was not a huge wedding. Instead, she dreamed of traveling and seeing other cultures.
So, in November 2022, Ms. Black, her husband, Mon’Darius Black, and their eight-person wedding party traveled from Shelby, N.C., to the Greek island of Santorini for a nine-day trip that included a small wedding ceremony with group activities followed by a honeymoon full of excursions and sightseeing.
“We didn’t want to spend a tremendous amount of money on a wedding. We looked at it like it was more about us rather than other people,” Ms. Black, 25, said. “Some people do see that as selfish, and while we had concerns about that, what mattered most is how we wanted to celebrate ourselves.”
When the couple first started considering wedding venues, the cheapest option they could find was $25,000. Flowers alone were $10,000. The total cost of their marriage and honeymoon trip was a little under $9,000. “We both have student loans, and we weren’t willing to go into more debt over a wedding to appease other people,” Ms. Black said.
Erika Hernandez, a wedding and elopement planner and the founder of the Greatest Adventure Wedding in Seattle, said that combining an elopement with a honeymoon was becoming increasingly popular because of its affordability.
“A lot of times, the couple just wants to include something that they really love doing together, like something they built their relationship off, and a lot of times that is traveling and adventuring together,” she said.
Couples choose honeymoons over weddings for more than just the savings. Many of Ms. Hernandez’s clients prioritize travel because they want to avoid the stress of preparing for a big event, are too busy with work and children, or prefer not to be the center of attention. “People rather spend the money on an experience for themselves than dinner for a whole bunch of people,” she added.
After Muna Yowell’s in-laws threw her and her now-husband, Dr. Jose J. Vargas Alvarado, an engagement party, the couple realized that they didn’t want a wedding.
Ms. Yowell, a 27-year-old data analyst, said the engagement party was largely about socializing with guests. On Oct. 7, the couple, who live in Dallas, married at a local courthouse and spent the evening with loved ones at a friend’s apartment.
Ms. Yowell, who is Palestinian, and her husband, who is Guatemalan, said they both did not feel right about holding a big celebration when the majority of her family lives in Palestine.
They spent only $100 on their courthouse ceremony, leaving room in the budget for a much larger honeymoon.
A week later, the couple flew to Hawaii for a week. “We went all out because we knew we could,” said Ms. Yowell, adding that the $5,000 trip involved renting a private sailboat, snorkeling, a helicopter tour across Maui and indulging in a fancy dinner every night of their stay.
“I’ve always heard that when it’s your wedding, you barely even get to eat the food that you paid thousands of dollars for,” Ms. Yowell said. “I didn’t want that. We wanted to be able to soak up the moment and really enjoy it with each other.”
Skipping the big wedding and going on a more budget-friendly getaway may have its drawbacks. Family members may be disappointed that they will miss the special day. However, Ms. Black decided that the advantages of saving money outweighed a few ruffled feathers.
“I don’t want to diminish the importance of family when it comes to celebrating big moments because I do love our families,” Ms. Black said, “but them witnessing us getting married is not worth us going into debt over a wedding.” The Blacks used the money they saved to close on a home in 2022 in Shelby, N.C.
