Your guide to the Atlanta Beltline

atlanta beltline walking tour

Access Atlanta Staff

On any given day, the  Atlanta Beltline trail  welcomes runners, walkers, bikers, skateboarders and spectators.

The route is one of the most comprehensive urban renewal efforts in the United States, repurposing 22 miles of unused railroad corridors into a network of parks and trails circling the core of the city’s intown neighborhoods.

It’s become part of Atlanta history thanks to  Ryan Gravel’s  innovative vision and the city’s willingness to make it a reality. For details on the various trails and the Atlanta Beltline map, click  here .

If you’ve been wondering just how to take in Atlanta’s outdoor hot spot, here are our six favorite ways to experience the Atlanta Beltline:

Stroll past murals,  tiny doors  , and official and unofficial installations while cruising the Beltline.  Art is found  throughout the entirety of the Beltline. A chunk of that art you’ll find throughout the 2.5 miles of the  Eastside Trail  — basically a walkable, outdoor museum. The trail showcases the work of hundreds of performers, visual artists and musicians. By yourself or with company, experience the vibrancy and diversity coming from the artist’s work. Materials you’ll most likely see range from metals, kinetic cubes, photography displays and movable puppetry.

Arboretum walking tour

Don’t just walk the Beltline, walk it with an expert docent from  Trees Atlanta . Learn firsthand about the trail’s horticultural collections and interesting facts about the Beltline. A plant-based narrative of our city at last. Bring some sunscreen and water and prepare for a journey like none other before. For specific tour dates and to register visit treesatlanta.org/calendar .

Looking for something more fast-paced? The Beltline is accessible by more than just foot; grab a bicycle and go. If you don’t own a bike, you can purchase or rent one from  Atlanta Bicycle Barn .

Once you grab your bike, pedal faster to the bar or farther away from town; the choice is yours. If you’re one of those who would rather get to the bar, stay on the Eastside Trail. If you’re looking for a change of city scenery, try  The Northside Trail . It offers less crowded paths with rougher terrain.

Beware on the weekends, however, as the path tends to fill up and you might just end up walking — with bike in tow.

Currently and probably for a while, the most recent section of the Beltline is the  Westside Trail . It runs from near Atlanta’s Washington Park to near Adair Park. If you think of it in terms of MARTA stations that’s Ashby to West End . New and old-is-new amenities are springing up quickly and pretty soon we’ll need traffic choppers to keep us informed on the pedestrian ebb and flow around town. Just kidding guys, please stay away from the Beltline in your nosy, noisy whirlybirds.

Get your grub on

Enjoy the Beltline’s walk-up patios from lunch, dinner and all the way to those late-night cocktails. The view only gets better while noshing on great food and drinks.

You can never go wrong with  Park Tavern’s  menu and view of Piedmont Park but if you’re wanting a more artisan approach, try  Krog Street Market. It offers a variety of Southern-grown restaurants with West Coast style right in the heart of Inman Park.

Find your new favorite cocktail

Fan of rum? A Victory Libre at  Victory Sandwich Bar  might become your favorite. Victory has two locations, but you’ll find their Inman Park location most accessible from the Beltline since the other one’s in Decatur.

Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall  is another fantastic spot off the trail. It’s an urban explorer favorite, often hitting a two-hour wait time on summer nights. Ladybird has a traditional bar inside and also offers an outdoor-oriented bar that takes place in a camper. Late night is especially pretty with the camping themed-chairs and twinkly-strung lights — drink in hand.

Atlanta Beltline map: How to access the Atlanta Beltline

There are many, many walkable and bike-friendly access points including the  Eastside Trail ,  Northside Trail ,  Southwest Connector Trail, West End Trail  and  Westside Trail.

1. Magnolia Collection

Magnolias are part of an ancient lineage of flowering plants dating back approximately 95 million years. The Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum is home to 18 types of magnolias from evergreen to flowering. Two magnolias in particular have witnessed history as they were planted just beyond the outfield wall for the former Ponce de Leon Park, where the Atlanta Crackers played baseball. Babe Ruth and Eddie Matthews both hit home runs that were caught in the canopy of one of these magnolia trees. As part of Arboretum experimentation, we have taken cuttings from these historic magnolias and grown them into new trees so that this piece of history can live on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and in new parks and baseball fields around Atlanta.

atlanta beltline walking tour

The oak trees on this slope and throughout the Arboretum represent many ecosystems in Georgia, from bottomland hardwood swamps to granite outcrops. Of the approximately 90 species of oaks native to the United States, 33 are native to Georgia. All 33 oaks are growing on this slope and between them dance 33 stainless steel leaf sculptures – one for each tree.

These metal oaks were designed and crafted by David Landis of Landis Sculpture Studio. Learn more about David’s work here . For more information about the individual oaks featured, see our fact sheet here .

To learn more general information about our Georgia oaks, check out this video here .

3. Beech Circle

Among the stateliest of our native trees, beeches are indicative of a mature forest. Though they can take around 40 years to produce a large quantity of nuts, beech trees are critical for wildlife. Beeches provide food and shelter for all kinds of birds and mammals, such as the red-headed woodpecker. Dubbed the fairy ring, the circle of beech trees here surrounds a granite outdoor classroom and gathering place where you can contemplate how the beech trees will look in 3, 5, and 10 years!

4. Eastside Azalea Collection

Despite the native azalea holding the title of Georgia’s State Wildflower, it is underused in the landscape. The Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum is now home to the largest public native azalea collection in the Atlanta Area with over 300 azaleas on display. The collection highlights over 25 species, cultivars, and varieties, and is home to all 13 azaleas native to the state of Georgia. This collection focuses on named cultivars (varieties that have been selected for depending on color, size, bloom time, etc.) within two series called the Georgia Moon Series and the Sunrise to Sunset Series. The Georgia Moon Series will have fragrant white-blooming Georgia native species, and the Sunrise to Sunset Series will be comprised of Georgia native species in warm orange, reds, and soft yellows blooming from March – July.

5. Stumpery Garden

The Stumpery Garden is a horticultural oddity, serving as a public place for learning and exploration and demonstrating how trees can be utilized in a beautiful way. Stumpery gardens utilize dead, fallen, and storm-damaged trees as an asset to the garden – providing critical habitat for beetles, frogs, birds, and small mammals such as chipmunks. Whole logs are placed upside down to display their root structure, and logs, branches, and pieces of bark are arranged to form walls and archways. Plants such as ferns, lichen, mosses, soft grasses, and trailing plants are encouraged to grow on and around them.

Take a virtual tour of the Stumpery Garden here .

atlanta beltline walking tour

6. Westside Azalea Collection

Different from the Eastside collection, the Westside collection has all straight species and natural varieties that encourage free hybridization. These azaleas are all grown from seed so there are many variations in the hues even between the same species.

atlanta beltline walking tour

7. Persimmon Woods

Home to the largest American persimmon tree in the state of Georgia, this remnant old growth forest on 1.3 acres provides habitat to a variety of deep forest flora. Walking through a nature trail and over a few bridges will bring you up close and personal with woodland groundcovers, rare spring ephemerals (plants with a short life cycle) such as trillium, and a large collection of native woody species. Enjoy the seasonal blooms, learn from plant identification signs, and get hands-on with volunteer opportunities to plant, divide woodland perennials, and collect seed.

Make a Beeline to the Atlanta BeltLine With Kids

T he Atlanta BeltLine is some miraculous combination of exercise trail, tourist attraction, path to historical and environmental exploration, public art gallery, cultural site, and so much more. It is Atlanta's aorta, pumping life throughout the city and connecting various intown neighborhoods together.

This 22-mile loop is a fantastic place to bring your kids and discover what makes the Atlanta BeltLine and the people and places of Atlanta so special. This multipurpose trail hosts wonderful attractions along the way, perfect for kids to discover nature, stop by a playground or skate park, admire art, grab a meal or stop in a shop, and just get out of the house.

One of the cooler details of the BeltLine is that many trees and plants are identified for kids to learn about.

Atlanta BeltLine is the perfect resource for all ages...and species (dogs love exploring this outdoor resource). Keep in mind, parts of the loop are still being developed so there are constant updates regarding new sections under construction, temporarily closed, or suddenly opened. We've collected some of our favorite activities along the BeltLine perfect for kids of all ages. So grab water bottles, sunscreen, and maybe a stroller — it's time to visit the Atlanta BeltLine!

Atlanta BeltLine: Parks & Playgrounds

Currently, the Atlanta BeltLine features 10 parks for kids to let loose and run amuck. Park standouts include Arthur Langford Jr. Park, on the Southside Trail, which features a new skatepark, as well as basketball courts, baseball fields, and a covered pavilion; Westside Park , along the Westside Trail, a mammoth-sized park (and quarry) that just opened last year and will eventually feature 280 acres of greenspace; and the intersection of Southside and Westside Trails is Perkerson Park, packed with fun amenities including a skatepark and splash pad.

Eastside Trail's Historic Fourth Ward Park, named after the surrounding Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, is a paradise of childhood activities. This 17-acre park features an awesome playground full of swings, slides, and other fun equipment; a fantastic splash pad (open May-October) that's perfect for playdates; a glorious shaded structure, especially appreciated by overworked parents; a Relay Bike Share station to rent bicyles; and ample green space to host various performances and festivals in the neighborhood. And if you do have a child who loves skateboarding, make sure to bring his or her board —the skatepark, constructed with a sizable donation from legend Tony Hawk, is fun for all ages and skill levels.

The Atlanta BeltLine organization hosts Free Family Fitness Programs in many of the parks along the BeltLine. The classes vary each week but can include Parent & Me Playdates, Grandparent & Me Playdates, and Learn-2-Ride Bike Club.

RELATED: Best Bowling Alleys for Kids in Atlanta

Pretty much almost every open, active trail on the Atlanta BeltLine includes some connection to a wonderful intown park, so make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and enough time to enjoy it all. And if you decide to head to Piedmont Park (connecting from Eastside Trail) after a long trek on the corridor, keep in mind that might be a lot of walking for your kiddos— it may be a good idea to split those extensive, outdoor spaces into two separate outings.

There is art located along the corridor's many trails, including Field Trip, by the artist Seven. Photo by Dr. Ashley Emile

Atlanta BeltLine: Art on the BeltLine

Featuring the largest public art display in the South, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine is a great way to introduce your children to art. Unlike art museums and galleries that may require children to be quiet and on their best behavior, children on the BeltLine can run free and enjoy the gorgeous murals, sculptures, and other pieces of art that dot the trails with enthusiasm and energy. Kids can choose their favorite pieces of art, created by local, national, and even international artists, appreciate the time and skill it takes to create these pieces, and maybe be inspired to one day create their own public displays of art. Not only are there murals and sculptures along 12 miles of the corridor, there's a performance component, called BeltLine Flow, featuring pop-up experiences, immersive creations, and other events.

Another whimsical way to add art appreciation to your family's trip to the BeltLine? Try to find the  Tiny Doors ATL's tiny doors, a colorful one on Westside Trail, as well as others at various spots along the corridor. The Eastside Trail weaves directly through Ponce City Market and is a great spot to take a break.

Atlanta BeltLine: Ponce City Market and Illuminarium

My children and I LOVE Ponce City Market (PCM) because there's always so much going on at this intown shopping/dining/entertainment mecca. The Eastside Trail literally runs right through PCM, offering the perfect respite for tired kids (and adults) to grab a meal and drink and maybe do a little shopping along the way. The food hall offers a huge amount of culinary choice for any picky eaters in the group, as well as tasty treats from  King of Pops , S ugar Shane's, and Collier Candy . And a shop like Rhen's Nest Toy Shop  is a great way to find a gift for good behavior along the corridor.

Skyline Park has a ton of awesome rides located atop Ponce City Market's rooftop attraction. Photo courtesy Skyline Park

But the truly great reason to bring children to Ponce during a visit on the Atlanta BeltLine is Skyline Park  —a rooftop, vintage-style boardwalk with attractions including mini golf, carnival games, and rides. The Roof hosts fun events, including kid-friendly ones like  trick-or-treating , Noon Year's Eve, and 4th of July fireworks. Get family tickets to visit Skyline Park to have fun looking out over all of Atlanta.

Illuminarium is a magical attraction for all ages. Also located on the Eastside Trail, this cinematic experience takes you out of Atlanta and puts you into the colorful African plains or even outer space, for a fully immersive journey.

Atlanta BeltLine: Tour Time

Depending how old your children are, taking an outdoor tour is a great way to explore the Atlanta BeltLine. From March through November,  Organized bike tours, for kids ages 13 and older, take place on the Westside Trail, last about 2.5 hours, and are $10 per person. Riders should be capable of biking about 11 miles with several stops included along the way. Younger kids may participate as long as they are riding in a safety seat attached to an adult's bike.  Interested participants can either bring their own bikes and helmets or rent bikes (at an additional cost).

Younger children or those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground can join a walking tour of the Atlanta BeltLine Arborteum, a massive horiculture collection along the corridor. Led by a Trees Atlanta docent, this free tour tells about the history of the BeltLine, with a focus on the native trees, plants, grasses along the way. Find out the walking tour schedule, as well as how to register (drop-ins are not allowed) by visiting the  Trees Atlanta website.

Before our beloved dog Archie passed away a few years ago, we took him on a walk to discover ATL Tiny Doors.

Atlanta BeltLine is always a fun place to take kids because it's a creative spot to get outside and see, close up, what makes Atlanta such a wonderful place to live.

Atlanta BeltLine gets safety enhancements near Piedmont Park

Atlanta beltline revamp to force road closures.

Midtown Atlanta drivers will need to find a new way to get past Monroe Drive and 10th Street for the next couple of weeks.

ATLANTA - The Atlanta BeltLine is not even finished, but it is already getting some work done.

Work begins Sunday, June 9, at 10th Street and Monroe Drive near Piedmont Park.

It is part of the Atlanta BeltLine Northeast Trail Segment One construction. Twenty-four-hour closures are expected until the evening of around 5 p.m. on June 14. Afterward, there will be single lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until September.

Atlanta BeltLine renovations near Piedmont Park will force road closures along 10th Street and Monroe Drive.

The project is geared towards improving pedestrian and bicycle safety and accessibility.

"It's great. We really need some traffic-calming right here. It's a high-pedestrian intersection and, as you can see, cars fly north and south here on Monroe, and it's pretty dangerous for pedestrians," said Scott White, who lives nearby.

Alissa Palladino, who was walking through the intersection on Tuesday evening, says the potential traffic issues are worth it. "I think a few days of having to reroute will be worth it in the end."

The renderings from Atlanta BeltLine Inc. show what's to come. "Atlanta BeltLine is managing the project in conjunction with City of Atlanta DOT," said Kynthia Gaines, Director of Construction for Atlanta BeltLine Inc. "We just ask the general public to pack their patience next week. We do understand this is going to be an inconvenience, but this will provide a better experience at the end of the day."

The project includes a new 10th Street bike lane, raised pedestrian crossing, improved crossings and pedestrian signals, and new traffic signals. "The intent of the project is to the connectivity to the BeltLine from the existing east side connector to the new northeast trail segment one that connects at Piedmont Park. It will also increase the safety for pedestrians and bicyclists at the intersection of 10th and Monroe," said Gaines.

A press release from Atlanta BeltLine Inc. states: "Detour routes will guide trail users and drivers via Kanuga to Virginia and Charles Allen to 8th Street throughout the intersection construction. In case of adverse weather, the closure will be rescheduled for June 16 through June 20.
