Joy in the Journey

Light of the World: FREE Bible Lesson for Kids

My daughters are 3 and 4 and every night, as I tuck them into bed, they beg for stories and songs. After recounting a made-up tale of a princess exploring a new island on her magical flying unicorn, we settle in for a song or two. Recently they’ve been wanting “This Little Light of Mine” on repeat. I love to see their little fingers wave in the air as they boldly sing, usually at the top of their lungs, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!” It encourages and challenges my heart to shine for Jesus in a dark world.

Today, I want you to pray that you would be a LIGHT wherever God has placed you. Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (5:14-16)

When we spend time with the Lord we reflect His light and point others to Him, like a beacon of hope. John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

We can shine God’s light in our classroom, our Sunday School room, our home, etc. when:

— we choose to respond in love, instead of reacting in anger, when a student ruffles our feathers

–we give a kind and gentle answer to a belligerent parent–we choose to humbly ask for forgiveness when we’ve been wrong

–we stay a few minutes after work to listen to and encourage a coworker who’s struggling

–we give grace to someone, even when the world would say they don’t deserve it

–we offer wisdom and encouragement from the Bible instead of a pat “everything will work out” answer

–we stand firm in our convictions and don’t compromise on what God’s Word says is right and wrongI am praying for you, dear teachers!

I don’t need to tell you that believers in Jesus are waging a war against darkness in this world. But we do not despair! “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

We know the ending – Jesus, the King of Kings, will reign supreme on His throne and we will spend eternity worshipping Him. Fellow believer, I charge you to let your light shine while we wait!

But being called a Light to the World isn’t just for adults – Kids can learn about shining the light of Jesus too!

I have created a FREE Bible unit you can use when teaching children about the biblical concept of Jesus being the  LIGHT OFTHE WORLD  and our calling to be a  LIGHT TO THE WORLD.

I’ve included activities for a variety of levels – you can pick and choose what will work best for your child(ren).

Here are the activities the unit includes:

the journey preschool photos

I have written a short devotional to explain the biblical concept of the Light of the World. As the teacher (or mom), you can read it to young children and discuss it as you go. If you’re completing this unit with older children you can give them the devotional to read on their own.

the journey preschool photos

The Bible verse for the unit is John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” I have included two versions of the poster – one in color to display and one in black and white for the kids to color as they review the verse.

the journey preschool photos

There are a lot of Bible verses that discuss this concept of light. I chose two of them for the children to read, discuss, and learn. In addition to the weekly Bible verse listed above (John 8:12) I have also chosen Matthew 5:14-16 that reminds us of our role as Christians: “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16). I have included two different versions for each verse – one in print and one in cursive. You can choose the appropriate worksheets based on the age and ability of your kids.

the journey preschool photos

Then we have craft time! I have two fun crafts you can choose from as you discuss the devotional, practice the Bible verse, etc. The one for the younger kids has the children coloring a picture of Jesus and a lightbulb and an earth to help them remember the concept that Jesus is the light of the world. The other craft is a mosaic lightbulb that older kids can creatively color.

the journey preschool photos

Next we have two comprehension/extension activities: 1. True or false fact sort. Give each student the activity sheet and have them color the thumbs-up or thumbs-down to demonstrate their comprehension of the lesson. Optional: Read the statements out loud and have the children respond by giving a thumbs-up or thumbs-down or by standing verses sitting.

2. Light vs. darkness sort. Give each student the activity sheet and have them color each picture and decide if the action is representing the light of Jesus or the darkness of sin. Optional: Have the children act out the scenarios and decide as a class if that action is demonstrating the light of Christ or darkness of sin.

the journey preschool photos

To wrap up the unit we brainstorm ideas of how we can practically be a light wherever God has placed us. I give the kiddos “homework” – to be a light and share the light of God with someone! Remind them that God is glorified by our good deeds.

the journey preschool photos

To wrap up the unit, I’ve compiled some fun ideas you can share with your little learners:

For a little treat you can get these lightbulb containers and fill them with candy or snacks.

You can also give each student a little something to take home to remind them of the message: I recommend these glow sticks or these little flashlights. *

*Note: These are affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission for sharing, at no cost to you

If you’re feeling very adventurous you can even get the supplies to make your own homemade candles with the children! I know they would think of this unit every time they lit it 🙂 I found a cute and easy tutorial on Pinterest.

Phew! Well thanks for sticking with me – I hope you got some ideas to help you plan your Bible unit and engage your students.

Mom shares son's hilarious 1st school photos: 'A family memory for us'

"When [the teacher] handed me the pictures, I was lost for words.”

A California toddler's first school photos are going viral for the funniest reason.

Mom Keishaun Anderson shared her 2-year-old son's photos in a post on the social platform X, formerly called Twitter, where it's quickly gone viral with over 17 million views.

"[Y'all] my son took his first school pictures," Anderson wrote in the caption, alongside four snapshots of her son Arris with his black hoodie up, looking thoroughly displeased with the cherished rite of passage that is Picture Day.

the journey preschool photos

Anderson told "Good Morning America" Arris, who she described as "super outgoing," is usually a smiley and photogenic kid who loves attending preschool, where he's in his first year.

the journey preschool photos

When she went to pick up her son at school after the photos were taken on Sept. 10, Anderson said the teacher was waiting for her with the photo printout.

"She had a paper in her hand and she just kind of held it close to her and started laughing," Anderson recalled. "And I was like, Wait, what's wrong? And when she handed me the pictures, I was lost for words."

Anderson said she couldn't help but laugh as well once she saw Arris' photos.

11-month-old adorably gets stuck in doggy door

"He's made that face around me hundreds of times but he normally loves school and he's normally not really upset. So I was just so shocked that he did that, especially … because just 30 minutes prior to that, we were in the car and I took pictures of him and he was smiling," she said.

Toddler goes viral with adorable 'Boom Chicka Boom' rendition

Anderson, a hairstylist, said Arris may have been affected by another recent milestone – his first haircut.

"He had a lot of hair, but it was a bit much to manage and he did not like getting it done so he got his first haircut. And as you could assume how a child would feel, some days, he doesn't really like it," the mom of one said. "If he's more comfortable with his hood on, I'll let him do it. I just did not know he was going to keep the hood on for the photo."

"I love the outcome of the pictures. It's going to be a family memory for us," she said. "These pictures are going to linger around forever. He's not going to be able to live it down."

The Secret Shortcut book by Mark Teague

The Secret Shortcut by Mark Teague

Wendell and Floyd are continually late for school, not because they have trouble getting out the door in the morning like yours truly, but because they have active imaginations. You see, on the way to school they keep getting captured by space creatures, caught in plagues of frogs, or waylaid by pirates. They decide the solution is to take the shortcut -- the secret shortcut they invented themselves. The shortcut, however, ends up being more of an adventure than they thought...

Book cover for King Arthur's Very Great Grandson

King Arthur's Very Great Grandson  by Kenneth Kraegel

This is a wonderful twist on the knight adventure story. Young Henry Alfred Grummorson sets out to slay a few beasts and meets some very formidable creatures. At least they  seem  formidable. It just so happens that none of the mythical beasts want to do battle. They'd rather play games, make friends, blow smoke rings, that sort of thing. All in all, though, young Henry still finds it quite exciting. A marvelous story.

Indigenous siblings, Lauren and James, have an afternoon out with their grandfather. While he naps, they go out onto the water in a canoe, where they encounter the Memekwesewak, water sprite-like creatures. Lauren and James spend the afternoon dancing and swimming with the Memekwesewak until they hear the sound of the drum, calling them back to the shore. A beautiful story with mesmerizing illustrations.

Once Upon a Book by Grace Lin

Once Upon a Book by Grace Lin and Kate Messner

What better adventure is there than getting lost in a book? On a winter day, in an attempt to shake off cabin fever, Alice ( one cannot help but wonder if she was named after a certain Wonderland lass ) opens a book. Immediately, she and is sucked inside on an adventure. With each turning of the page, the adventure continues until she returns to her family. Readers will love examining the illustrations to see how the pages of Alice's book form the backdrops of her adventure. Simply delightful.

They must finish the game in order to set everything aright.

Doors in the Air picture book

Doors in the Air by David Weale, illustrated by Pierre Pratt

Find it: Your Library | Amazon

Doors are the gateway to adventure, everyone knows that! This boy appreciates the possibilities that lie beyond each door. Big, bold paintings illustrate the imaginative worlds the boy enters, and rhyming text make this a fun read aloud. The idea of worlds beyond doors would also be a great writing or drawing prompt for kids.

Free Fall wordless picture book

Free Fall by David Weisner

Many of Weisner's picture books could be categorized as adventure books so I thought it would be nice to highlight one of his lesser known titles. This book is all about the power of imagination. When a boy falls asleep with a book, he is transported to a fantastic and surreal world. He journeys through this world where objects transform and creatures climb out of books. You will have to set aside your expectations when you "read" this one and really open up to the possibilities of imaginative storytelling.

The Highway Rat picture book

The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson

I cannot help but think of Anne of Green Gables film when I read this book. Does anyone else remember how Anne recites "The Highwayman" at the charity event? Julia Donaldson has adapted Alfred Noyes' famous 1906 poem into a humorous picture book. The Highway Rat steals food from all his neighbors ( even his own horse! ) until a clever duck lures him to a cave to give him his comeuppance. I love reading this aloud! Donaldson brilliantly maintains the cadence and rhythm of Noyes' poem and you can't help but get dramatic.

Fortunately by Remy Charlip book cover

Fortunately by Remy Charlip

This lovely, wacky, classic children's book from Remy Charlip is a reversal ( and re-reversal ) of fortune adventure. When Ned is invited to a surprise party he sets out on what one would expect to be an innocuous journey. One the way, he meets tigers, survives an explosion, parachutes out of a plane, and generally gets on by the seat of his pants.

All the Way to Havana book cover

All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, illustrated by Mike Curato

Road trips make great adventures. A boy and his family drive to Havana in their car, Cara-Cara. Along the way, the boy takes in all the sights and sounds of the drive, especially the sounds made by his beloved car. The illustrations are wonderfully vibrant. I loved the rhythm of this book, which is a great read aloud choice.

Louise The Adventures of a Chicken picture book cover

Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo, illustrated by Harry Bliss

Louise leaves her farm and sails off on a pirate ship. Perhaps this is not the best way to start an adventure since the pirates want to cook her up. Nevertheless, a storm brings a reversal of fortune and the intrepid Louise continues on, trying out life in the circus, consulting a fortune teller and playing rescuer to a group of caged chickens. This is a fairly long book, with chapters, so be prepared, but Louise's adventures are certainly epic.

the raft book cover with boy floating on raft with assorted animals

The Raft by Jim LaMarche

Nicky goes to visit his grandmother who lives by a river in the woods. At first he thinks the summer is going to be boring, but Nicky's grandmother encourages him to get outside. On the river he discovers a raft. He takes it out one afternoon and it becomes his daily activity. While floating every day, he admires the local flora and fauna. He even begins sketching what he sees. What I also love about this book is the development of the relationship between Nicky and his grandparent.

little bear's big house book cover

Little Bear's Big House (series) by Benjamin Chaud

I love this series of oversized books about Little Bear's adventures ( translated from French ). It is so much fun to try and find Little Bear in each enormous, detailed two page spread. In this installment Little Bear discovers an empty house, decides to go exploring and has a marvelous adventure!

After emerging from his cave, Bear falls into the river and begins a journey downstream. Along the way he picks up various animal companions, including a frog and a turtle, a raccoon and more. During their watery ride, the animals discover they need each other and then–here comes the waterfall! Utterly joyous.

Vroom! by Barbara McClintock

Vroom! by Barbara McClintock

This is a wonderfully joyous read aloud for preschoolers. It is the story of a girl going on a journey in a race car while celebrating the pleasures of speed! One night Annie puts on her helmet ( safety first! ), hops into her car and zooms out the window of her bedroom, headed on an adventure limited only by her imagination. The text is simple and to the point, allowing the reader to travel vicariously with the racer across the landscape. The illustrations are clever and engaging. A gem.

Jemmy Button picture book

Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidal

This is an unusual book that shows adventure may not be all it's cracked up to be, especially when that adventure is thrust upon you. It's based on the true story of a boy from Tierra del Fuego, who was taken to England in the early 1800s.  One day, travelers to a distant land give a button to the parents of a young boy and in exchange they take the boy with them  on a long voyage to a place filled with buildings, people wearing odd clothing, and theatrical events. Jemmy explores this new world until one day he travels back across the sea to his former home. He finds his home just as it was - just as it should be. This is a wonderful story to start a conversation with your kids about how we define home, and the importance of valuing all different ways of living.

George Flies South picture book

George Flies South by Simon James

Sometimes a moment of hesitation can turn into a big adventure. This title would also be a great addition to my list of books about trying new things . George is a little bird about to attempt his first flight. He's a bit reluctant but a gust of wind lifts his nest right off the branches, sending him sailing across the city. This is such a delightful book and my kids giggled at the twists and turns of George's journey.

Jonathan loves watching the big blue boat in the harbor. One day, after his parents take his teddy bear away, telling him he is too old for a stuffed toy, he goes down to the docks and boards the big blue boat in search of his missing cuddly friend. Along the way he takes on some unusual passengers, has a run in with pirates and survives a shipwreck. He does find his friend, but that's only the beginning of a new adventure.

Great list! Was looking for an adventure picture book for a grade 2 read aloud and found your list. As I was looking in the library for Doors in the Air, I stumbled over Zoom Away, by Tim Wynne Jones which I am going to add to my own adventure list. Thanks!

Zoom Away is wonderful! I forgot about that one. I used to have a really old copy of that book.

Hi! I love your information and. recommendations! Do you have links to your game videos? They are so simple, anyone can do them very quickly at home, but do require thinking! I would love to be able to share them with my 2nd graders while they are at home, and want to be sure to give you credit. If you have youtube links or something, I'd love to be able to share the games. Thanks! Diana

What an amazing time in their lives!

Children’s brains develop most rapidly between birth and age five, thus these are the most important years of growth, development and learning. This period builds the foundation for life-long learning and achievement. Our program is based on a wide range of the best-practice, research-based early education approaches designed to ensure school readiness and provide a strong foundation for lifelong learners. We believe learning should be fun and that children learn best through hands-on play and active participation.

At Journey School Lynnwood we offer toddler care, preschool, summer camp, before and after school to select elementary schools in the Edmonds and Northshore School Districts as well as a private, fully-outdoor, OSPI-licensed, Kindergarten and First grade program. We are located on a beautiful 2-acre campus full of fun and adventure, nurturing our kids' desire to explore, learn and grow in!

Tell Us About Your Experience!

As we all continue to manage the effects of COVID we are currently only doing scheduled Virtual Tours.

the journey for a lifelong learner begins here

The tjb way to learn and grow.

TJB is a play-based program. Play-based is a learning approach that uses play as a central part of the learning process. It’s based on the idea that children learn BEST when they’re actively engaged and exploring in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Play is valued and encouraged. We believe that children learn best when they are motivated by their own curiosity and innate desire to discover, know, and understand. We provide children with a variety of concrete, hands-on opportunities for learning. We stress a cooperative approach and nurture creativity.

Daily Communication:

Communication is KEY to our partnership with your family! We use an app for all parent information, including sign in & out, daily routines and information such as feedings, diaper changes, observations of your child’s mood and behavior, provide pictures & videos and MORE! We feel it is important, and encourage you to ask questions regarding your child’s activity, nutrition, growth and development at any time.

How Enrollment Works:

The Journey Begins follows a traditional school year. Our oldest children age out of our program and go off to preschool who in turn leave preschool for kindergarten. Our largest enrollment period is for the Fall, with a mid-late August start date. We often have a very small secondary enrollment, with a January start date. There are rare occasions, randomly throughout the year, where we have an unexpected space, and we try our best to get those spaces filled immediately.

Philosophy:

Our philosophy/vision incorporates a safe and stimulating environment that enriches the children through these important first years. We incorporate open communication between staff and parents. The Journey Begins (TJB) knows that each child is an individual and needs to be treated as such. Children begin care at all stages of development and we will guide them through these stages and build upon them. Flexibility of the program is important, as the needs of infants are constantly changing and developing. A positive and happy staff, a trusting relationship between caregiver and the child, clean and well-organized environment, room to play, indoors and outside, in a safe and stimulating environment.

Our mission/vision incorporates a safe and stimulating environment that enriches the children through these important first years. We incorporate open communication between staff and parents. Parents are always welcome to visit their child, come for feedings or nursing, or as their schedules allows.*

TJB provides a nurturing environment where children can grow and develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Children learn through their play and age-appropriate activities, S.T.E.A.M., toys, and developmental milestones.

Our goal is to always provide the children in our care a clean, safe, comfortable, and loving environment where they can play and grow.

* Covid protocols may prohibit parents on campus due to Public Health & Safety as well as licensing guidelines.

Celebration Kids is our sister program for preschool age children located in South Pasadena. All of the children that age out of our program are given priority at Celebration Kids based on age and availability.
