TOURING AUSTRALIA 2023

TWIAV_WHT.png

The Smashing Pumpkins will bring The World Is A Vampire tour to ten cities across the nation this April and that is just the beginning!  The tour boasts some very special guests including alt-rock legends, Jane’s Addiction and killer Aussie rock from Amyl & The Sniffers, RedHook, Battlesnake and local acts opening each show.   PLUS each show will feature professional wrestling matches between Billy Corgan’s NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia).

The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s, often cited as one of the most influential acts in alternative rock.

From the instantly recognisable harmonic riff of Cherub Rock and the haunting Disarm from their breakthrough album, 93’s Siamese Dream to the majesty of Tonight, Tonight and the savagery of Bullet With Butterfly Wings from the 10 times platinum monster, 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness which was the best-selling double album of the 90’s, through to the bands most recent releases 2018’s Shiny and Oh So Bright and 2021’s Cyr which featured the singles, Solara, The Colour Of Love and Wyttch, The Smashing Pumpkins have been a mainstay in the rock world for over three decades and in 2023 will release their most ambitious work to date, Atum: A Rock Opera In Three Acts.

With their densely layered, diverse sound fusing elements of rock, metal, psyche, shoegaze and electronica, The Pumpkins stand apart from their peers. With over 30 million albums sold to date, the GRAMMY®, MTV VMA, and American Music Award winning band remains one of the most influential bands in history.

Jane's Addiction were one of the first bands from the alt-rock movement to gain both mainstream media attention and commercial success. The band's first two studio albums, 1988’s Nothing's Shocking (1988) and 1990’s Ritual de lo Habitual, were released to widespread critical acclaim and gave the world classics like Mountain Song, Been Caught Stealing and Stop! Fusing together a multitude of styles that ultimately led to them being labeled ‘funk-punk’ Jane’s Addiction created a sound all their own and their influence can be heard across nearly every sub-genre of rock music.

Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell’s influence extends far beyond the band and their side projects. He created the iconic Lollapalooza Festival which brought alternative music to the masses from 1991 onwards. This festival was instrumental in creating the culture we recognise and love today.

Some of Australia’s most impressive rock will be on display as part of The World Is A Vampire Tour

The Smashing Pumpkins Are Coming To Australia For A Massive Tour… And A Pro Wrestling Showcase

The Smashing Pumpkins Are Coming To Australia For A Massive Tour… And A Pro Wrestling Showcase

Chris Singh

Legendary rock bands The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction are coming to Australia for a tour across April 2023. With locals Amyl & The Sniffers on support duties, the two pioneering bands will pack no less than ten shows into an extensive schedule, kicking off in Wollongong and ending with an outdoor concert on the Gold Coast.

And, well, it’s not your typical concert either. The tour is fashioned more as a festival because Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan will also be peppering in some wrestling matches between his NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia), working in a line-up that includes themselves, Jane’s Addiction, Amy & The Sniffers, glam-rock band Battlesnack, RedHook and a few local openers.

There is no indication as to whether or not the ring will also serve as the stage for these bands. Although that’s unlikely given the roadies would have to work double time as the day switches between live music and live wrestling.

The Smashing Pumpkins will be the headliners considering this is their The World Is A Vampire Festival, which they have been touring around the world to showcase the second act of their ambitious 33-song rock opera, ATUM , which is conceived as the sequel to seminal classic Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness .

Billy Corgan and co. will headline the touring festival with their recent US tourmates in Jane’s Addiction billed right below them. Other acts featured on the line-up include Amyl And The Sniffers , RedHook and Battlesnake, with more due to be announced in the coming weeks.

The tour will also now kick off at Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane on April 15, while Victorian fans are getting a new show at PICA, Port Melbourne on April 22.

There have been some cancellations, namely Wollongong on April 15 and Penrith on April 29, due to “circumstances out of our control”. Ticketholders can transfer their tickets to the fresh Sydney show on April 19.

Other changes include the Newcastle event being postponed by 10 days, from April 19 to April 29, and a planned event at Hastings Foreshore being rendered “uninsurable” due to “the Mornington Council updating their Environmental Plan on February 7, that states ANY wet weather can lead to an event being shut down at their discretion”. Tickets to the Hastings Foreshore event will be valid at Port Melbourne on April 22 or at Ballarat April 23.

Tickets are now available via One World Entertainment .

The tour coincides with the release of The Smashing Pumpkins’ 12th album, a three-part rock opera titled ‘ATUM’ . The first two “acts” of the album have already hit streaming platforms, with the final part arriving on April 21 alongside physical editions of the full album.

THE GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL 2024 HUGE LINE-UP IS HERE

the smashing pumpkins tour australia

‍ Good Things Festival will deliver a trip down the rabbit hole with a stacked bill of international heavyweights, old favourites, hungry up-and-comers, and Aussie staples. And in a boon for younger attendees, Sydney’s Centennial Park festival date will be a 16+ event for the first time!

No one has cultivated a cult of personality quite like KORN . As the coveted headliners for Good Things Festival 2024 , the Californian nu-metal pioneers will be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of their landmark self-titled debut album and a career trajectory that speak volumes: two GRAMMY® Award wins, multi-platinum album certifications, and over 40 million records sold worldwide. Continually pushing the limits of the alternative, metal, and rock across their back catalogue, KORN’s unwavering sonic vision incorporates everything from dubstep and hip-hop to the bagpipe sections of frontman Jonathan Davis. Forever for the freaks, KORN’s Good Things appearance will find them in fine form and off the leash.

Seeing SUM 41 will be a bittersweet occasion for dedicated Aussie fans, as the Good Things Festival acts as the band’s last-ever ‘Tour of the setting Sum’ tour Down Under. Pulling from their formative album trinity— All Killer No Filler (2001), Does This Look Infected? (2002), and Chuck (2004)—along with their recent Heaven :x: Hell double-LP, the Canadian rockers are determined to go out with a bang, one befitting their status as a beacon of millennial domination. Come for the high-energy pop punk, and stay for the heavy metal anthems.

Speaking of anthems, it’s hard to deny the impact VIOLENT FEMMES have had on the broad history of alternative music. The Milwaukee outfit have been festival mainstays throughout their awe-inspiring 40-year career, and direct influences on Pink, John Cusack, Mark Morris, The Pixies, and more. German heavy arena sensation ELECTRIC CALLBOY known for their viral hits like Hypa Hypa, We Got The Moves, RATATATA and their pulsing cover of Cascada’s Everytime We Touch have proven that the group’s blend of retro pop synths, arena rock, and metalcore is both a recipe for chart-topping success and captivating audiences worldwide.

After bringing their own curated The World Is A Vampire Festival to Australia last year, and the recent release of the band’s thirteenth studio album, Aghori Mhori Mei , The Smashing Pumpkins frontman BILLY CORGAN will wow the Good Things Festival crowd with a spirited set supported by The Delta Riggs as his backing band. Festival punters will be treated to tracks from CORGAN’s expansive solo catalogue as well as songs he’s written for The Smashing Pumpkins. MASTODON have racked up numerous accolades that transcend their sludge metal origins. Alongside collaborations with Game of Thrones , Adult Swim, and DC Comics, the Atlanta quartet finally took home a GRAMMY® Award after six career nods. 2021’s Hushed & Grim double-LP took meditations on grief and transformed them into moments of melodic mourning and raging bursts of energy. Guitarist/songwriter KERRY KING will bring a taste of his trademark fury to the Good Things Festival for 2024. With KING’s first solo LP outside of thrash titans Slayer, From Hell I Rise , unleashed on the world, expect a dose of blunt-force riffage and pointed lyrical themes with some Slayer classics thrown in as the kicker.

The long-awaited return of THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM to Australian shores has been almost a decade in the making. With the release of their highly anticipated comeback album, History Books , in October last year, it’s now Australia’s turn to be a part of the band’s rebirth. Newfound ARIA Hall of Famers JET will also get their shine on as they take to the stage to celebrate the recent twentieth anniversary of their multi-platinum debut album, 2003’s Get Born . Fans can expect to hear radio rock hits like Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Rollover DJ, and more. With their reputation as seasoned pros and one of the country’s most incredible live acts, punk rockers THE LIVING END will get the crowd pumping with iconic anthems like Second Solution and Prisoner of Society , making their only live shows for 2024 ones to remember. After playing their seminal Bricks Are Heavy LP on the road last year, 90s punk icons L7 return to give audiences another taste of Californian riot grrrl history including favourites like Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Wargasm and more.

Sydney futurists NORTHLANE are global ambassadors for Australian metal, known for their exhilarating live show and unrivalled creative expression. With consecutive ARIA Award wins and #1 chart debuts already in the bag, the band’s latest Mirrors Edge EP is their most daring effort yet. Fans will also see BOWLING FOR SOUP on their first trip Down Under in over fifteen years. The Texan pop punkers are fresh off a pair of 2024 Download Festival performances, and celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their fan-favourite A Hangover You Don’t Deserve LP. While 2024 already belongs to ALPHA WOLF , their Good Things appearance is set to cap off the metalcore crew’s most successful year to date. The Melbourne quintet just wrapped up a completely sold-out Australian headline tour following the release of their acclaimed third full-length, Half Living Things .

For the alternative rockers, Orlando emo sensation SLEEPING WITH SIRENS are no strangers to devoted Australian crowds, and their Good Things Festival set will deliver on stratospheric hooks and huge sing-a-longs. Not to be outdone, Brisbane’s THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT will bring their emotionally charged performance to the festival stage, anchored by frontman Clint Boge's powerful croon. 90s flagbearers 311 were last in the country in 1998 and have since maintained their standing as one of the genre’s most entertaining outfits with a groove-laden sound dipping into rap, reggae, and funk.

Award-winning songwriter, artist, and novelist AViVA will rally her “Outsider” community to the call with her idiosyncratic spin on pop-rock immediacy. Sacramento’s DESTROY BOYS will be eager to unleash tracks from their brand new Funeral Soundtrack #4 LP and expand on their bratty punk origins. With a career spanning half a century, legacy rockers DRAGON will showcase their heavy prog pedigree and penchant for soul-flavoured melodies. Meanwhile, DIY rock troubadour FRANK TURNERAND THE SLEEPING SOULS will mark another return to Australia as part of the Good Things Festival , this time supporting his acclaimed new album, Undefeated .

Pennsylvanian outfit FROM ASHES TO NEW have climbed to the front of the rock vanguard, embracing the freedom of hybridity and experimenting with hard rock, hip-hop, electronic, and alternative sounds. Known for stretching genre descriptors into alluring new forms, alt artist GRANDSON has netted over one billion streams and a dizzying list of high-profile collaborators including Mike Shinoda, Travis Barker, and Tom Morello. Backing up with another trip Down Under following 2023’s ‘The Midnight Demon Club’ tour, Cape Cod iconoclasts HIGHLY SUSPECT will bring their rule-breaking rock philosophy to the festival stage with cuts from their shiny new full-length, As Above, So Below . Swedish heavy purveyors IMMINENCE will introduce Aussie crowds to the uncompromising alt-metalcore vision of their bludgeoning fifth full-length, The Black —this is one set metalheads do not want to miss.

‍ KILLING HEIDI will throw it back to the early 00s when their album debut Reflector became a four-time ARIA winner and mega-smash single Weir was an inescapable earworm, playing the record in full for the Good Things Festival crowd. As one of Britain’s breakout heavy exports, LOATHE have built a reputation for their intense, multi-media live show, as seen on a recent North American tour run supporting Knocked Loose. Mixing metalcore with shades of electronica, pop, and post-hardcore on their stunning debut full-length, Secrets Of The Future , Sydney newcomers RELIQA will dazzle with their intricate take on progressive metal stylings. Influenced by early 90s and 00s pop-punk, TAYLOR ACORN’s sound is imbued with youthful exuberance and relatability, tackling mental health struggles and head-on with catchy hooks and earnest vulnerability.

2024 also marks the return of the talented STAGE 666 Artists and their carnivalesque Freak Show lounge. Witness the knife-throwing, gravity defying stunts of host Captain Ruin, or be amazed by Princess Tweedle Needle’s daring feats of bodily transgression as the “princess of pain” performs the ‘human pincushion’ act, skewering her flesh with glee, swinging a beer keg with her lady bits. Direct from the underground nightclubs of Berlin, you don’t want to miss out on STAGE 666’s guest star!

GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL LINE UP:

You Good Things Got Talent

the smashing pumpkins tour australia

The Smashing Pumpkins are back in Australia, and they haven't sounded this great in years

Four men dressed in dark clothes and jackets stand before a purple background

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Halfway through The Smashing Pumpkins ' set at Brisbane's Eatons Hill Hotel, frontman Billy Corgan jokes about how miserable he must be, given how much miserable music he's made.

It's funny, because the guy has never seemed happier.

His The World Is A Vampire mini-festivals allow Corgan to combine his passions for music and wrestling, bringing the band he helms and the wrestling league he owns (National Wrestling Alliance) to people around the world.

It's now brought him to Brisbane, a place you'd assume he knows fairly well – even if he does call it Bris-bain – for the first show of the festival's run around Australia , and he's here with some damn fine company.

Unapologetically Amyl

Amyl & the Sniffers are a finely tuned rock'n'roll beast these days. They're one of those unique entities that sound like so many other bands – AC/DC, Black Flag, Turbonegro, Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo, to name a few – yet also come across completely unique.

In their case, that's thanks to fierce frontwoman Amy Taylor .

She's a magnetic presence whose greatest asset isn't necessarily her snarling rasp, but her unapologetic insistence to be fully herself.

This afternoon they pummel through their best songs – including 'Security', 'Maggot', 'Hertz' – but it's the intense 'Knifey' that feels most powerful.

It's a well-executed change of pace and a genuinely intense moment. Most of the set is a bash over the head, but a moment like this demonstrates their range.

The band, and Taylor's voice, are aggressively not to everyone's taste. That's why they're so glorious. They do what they do, and after years of relentless touring, they’ve got it down to a fine art.

The sleaze and skills and Jane's Addiction

Seeing Perry Farrell yell 'Aussie Aussie Aussie' is the weirdest thing to happen on stage tonight.

Sure, Jane's Addiction 's cast of dancing women gyrate acrobatically on scaffolds, sex swings and even a rocking horse at various stages through the set, but at least we were expecting that.

It's the legendary Los Angeles band's   first Australian show in 12 years and we all breathe a sigh of relief when Farrell lets out his first big cry of the night in the explosive 'Ocean Size' – his voice still sounds incredible.

Sadly, guitarist Dave Navarro isn't here as he continues to recover from long COVID. Thankfully another ex-Chili Pepper in Josh Klinghoffer is here, and that's an incredibly safe set of hands in which to leave these fast, shred heavy rock classics.

It really is nothing but classics tonight. 'Ain't No Right' has an immense, rumbling power, Farrell's roar in 'Mountain Song' is incredible, and the sassy energy of 'Been Caught Stealing' is still such a thrill after all these years.

Through the set, Perry stops to chat. Between swigs from his bottle of red wine, he tells us he wants to grow a mullet, tells us that he shot up curry powder on his first trip to Australia, tells us how orgasmic certain songs feel.

The only moment years of wear shows on his voice is in the anthemic 'Jane Says', where he doesn't even try and replicate its main hook. The rest of his performance is so good, we can let it slide.

As great as Farrell is as a vocalist and entertainer, and as impossible to ignore as those dancers are, the musicality on display from the rest of the band really is the most staggering thing about the show.

Stephen Perkins is a monstrous drummer and the way he and Eric Avery play together shows off not just their talent but their experience. They are living proof that the best way to remain great is to simply play hundreds of shows together across 35 years.

This makes Klinghoffer's work even more impressive. To be dropped in the middle of a legendary band with so much history, and to be replacing a guitarist of such unique and significant talent, is no mean feat.

He's done it before , though, and tonight he proves he could do it again if anyone needed him.

The band tear through a wild version of 'Stop' to close things out, and then take their time leaving the stage, soaking up the applause. It took over a decade for them to get back here, who knows when they'll return?

Wrestlers, Talking Heads covers, and a string of undeniable anthems

These days, The Smashing Pumpkins are made up of founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlain, with not-particularly-new member Jeff Schroeder. Tonight, they're joined by Jack Bates on bass and Katie Cole on backing vocals.

This matters, because tonight's show is the first time Iha has joined the band in Australia in 25 years, and, for Chamberlain, it's been 15 years. It's the closest we've been (and probably the closest we will ever get) to a reunion of the iconic Chicago grunge band's band's classic line-up.

We can immediately tell the difference. This is the best The Smashing Pumpkins have sounded on an Australian stage in a long time.

They open on new single 'Empires', one of four tracks from the band's ambitious latest release, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts that the band play tonight.

But their set is largely a reminiscence on some of the most emotive, atmospheric rock of the 90s.

'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' is searing and vitriolic, 'Today' is enormous and anthemic. Corgan leans into frontman mode for 'Eye' (from the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway ) and 'Ava Adore', jettisoning his guitar and confidently strutting the stage in his dark, flowing robe, animatedly calling for crowd participation.

Iha and Corgan perform a quick, acoustic cover of The Church's 'Under The Milky Way' and it is the most genuinely unexpected moment of the night. They don't seem completely thrilled with their rendition, but they're wrong: they do a good job and it's very endearing.

This leads into a beautifully intimate take on 'Tonight, Tonight', and we barely even miss the big, sweeping strings that make it so epic on record. In fact, the stripped back version is just a stronger reminder of how good this song is.

It's also really pleasant to see a bit of back-and-forth between the two members, given the prospect of Iha joining the Pumpkins was still a pipe dream last time they were here.

The end of the show is dynamite. The riff that opens 'Cherub Rock' threatens to tear a hole in the sky above us, the hectic and beautiful lighting during 'Zero' is almost as impressive as the song itself, and '1979' gets the mildly distant crowd the most vocal they've been all night.

It often seems cruel when a band drops a new song in this fierce run to the finish line. Credit where it's due, last year's 'Beguiled' slots into this hit parade surprisingly well, even though the addition of a couple of wrestlers pulling some moves mid-song is absolutely ridiculous.

The whole thing ends with a messy and chaotic 'Silverfuck', a rare moment where the band don't necessarily do justice to their recording, but it's still a fittingly huge end to the set.

This is not a perfect gig. Their heavy, grinding cover of 'Once In A Lifetime' makes this Talking Heads fan irritable, neither 'Stand Inside Your Love' nor 'Space Age' inspires much energy from the audience, and, while Chamberlain's drum solos are incredible, those drawn-out, jammy moments ('Solara' especially) only appeal to a certain sector of Pumpkins fans, boring the hell out of others.

These are nitpicky concerns though. The band have put together a very approachable setlist for this tour that will please the most casual of Smashing Pumpkins fans, while hopefully offering their most dedicated supporters enough to stay excited about.

Playing their own shows means the production is perfectly tailored to their set, which you see in the brilliant lighting design befitting of songs that sound this epic.

If, for some reason, you didn't love this show, perhaps you can rest easy in knowing you've helped make poor, miserable Billy Corgan's dreams come true.

The world is a vampire is australia's new festival led by the smashing pumpkins and jane's addiction.

Also on the bill: Amyl and The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake, plus professional wrestling.

The World Is a Vampire Is Australia's New Festival Led by The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction

Talk about a perfect name: if you're going to start a new music festival that revolves around The Smashing Pumpkins, then calling it The World Is a Vampire is a no-brainer. This exciting addition to Australia's festival scene is being sent to happily drain all your attention this autumn, when it heads around the country with one helluva bill. Billy Corgan and his band members will be there, of course, and so will fellow alt-rock legends Jane's Addiction.

Today is the greatest day for news about 90s favourites hitting our shores, clearly. And yes, you can expect the rollicking classic that is 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' to get a spin — the whole fest is named after it, after all. As well as hearing fellow Pumpkins greats such as 'Disarm', '1979', 'Tonight, Tonight', 'Today' and 'Zero', the Perry Farrell-led Jane's Addiction will be on hand to bust out 'Been Caught Stealing', 'Jane Says' and the likes.

How many 'Zero' shirts will you see at the fest? Oh so many, as at every Pumpkins gig.

Also on the bill: Australia's own Amyl and The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake, plus yet-to-be-announced local acts opening each stop. And this fest has stops. It'll be singing about rage and rats in cages at ten venues, pinballing around New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia — heading to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, plus Penrith, Newcastle and Wollongong; Port Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and Ballarat; Bribie Island and the Gold Coast; and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

If you're a fan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Aussie music, and you know a bit about Billy Corgan's romantic history, you might be crossing your fingers for a wild addition to the bill: The Veronicas. The Australian duo joined the Pumpkins on-stage for 'Eye' back in November 2022 , albeit at the Hollywood Bowl.

Whoever else joins the lineup, they'll feature alongside professional wrestling, with each show including matches between Billy Corgan's NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia). Wrestlers will take to the ring in-between the bands — and yes, Corgan does own the alliance that bears his name.

It's currently a stellar time for music icons who first made it big a few decades back touring Australia, with The World Is a Vampire and its killer lineup joining the Modest Mouse- and Slowdive-led Daydream , Fatboy Slim doing his own tour and headlining Groovin the Moo , Ice Cube and Cypress Hill teaming up, Snoop Dogg also heading our way, and Blink-182 stopping by in 2024 — and Red Hot Chili Peppers currently making their way around the nation. Yes, the list goes on, and also includes Vengaboys .

The Smashing Pumpkins

Get ready to be disarmed when the alt-rock legends take to the stage for an epic show complete with wrestling matches

Adena Maier

Time Out says

The Smashing Pumpkins are coming to town, and they're pulling out all the stops with a show that's basically one part epic gig, one part carnival. Whether you're a mega-fan who still has  Siamese Dream  and  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness  on regular rotation or you just sometimes enjoy belting out 'Disarm' in your car, this is one show you won't want to miss.

Led by singer-songwriter Billy Corgan, who is the only remaining member from the original line-up, the Smashing Pumpkins rose to fame in Chicago in the late '80s. The grungey vibe blends dream pop, psychedelia and heavy metal elements for a distinctive and layered sound accompanied by Corgan's angsty lyrics and textured vocals. While the band is best-known for '90s releases like '1979', 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' and 'Disarm', they've recently churned out a new album:  Atum - Act 1 and 2.

For this one-off gig at the Port Melbourne Industrial Centre for the Arts (PICA), the Pumpkins will be joined by alt-rockers Jane's Addiction as well as Melbourne rockers Amyl and the Sniffers, RedHook, Battlesnake and other local additions. And as if that didn't already sound nuts, the gig will also feature professional wrestling; the sport is a passion of Corgan's, who currently owns the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).

Tickets start at $209, with several VIP experiences available with inclusions like private guided backstage tours, photo ops, merch packages and access to special viewing areas. Purchase yours here .

Smashing Pumpkins (formed in 1988) is an American alternative rock band formed by frontman Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha.

Following the break-up of his gothic rock band The Marked, frontman Billy Corgan departed his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S. and returned to his native city Chicago, U.S. Before long Corgan met rhythm guitarist James Iha and the two practiced and made their debut performance as a duo at the Polish Bar Chicago 21. The pair named themselves The Smashing Pumpkins and shortly after met bassist D’arcy Wretzky who was invited to join along with jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

The Smashing Pumpkins made their recording debut on a Chicago alternative rock compilation CD entitled “Light Into Dark”, which was followed by their sell-out debut single “I Am One” released in 1990 through Limited Potential Records. The band’s full-length debut arrived after signing with Caroline Records in 1991, “Gish”, produced by Butch Vig, fused alternative rock with heavy metal, psychedelia and dream pop, drawing comparisons with Jane’s Addiction. After subsequently releasing the EP “Lull” in October 1991, The Smashing Pumpkins signed with Virgin Records and supported their album with opening slots for bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Guns N’ Roses.

In an attempt to move drummer Chamberlin away from his narcotic supply, the band moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1992 to record their sophomore album. With the help of producer Butch Vig again, “Siamese Dream” came about amidst a sea of turbulence within the band. Corgan, as with the first album, thought it was best for him alone to play all the guitar and bass parts, drawing some resentment from Wretzky and Iha. Chamberlin quickly found new drug connections and was absent for days at a time and Corgan was responding to his depression by spending all of his time in the studio.

Followed by a relentless touring schedule with appearances at 1994’s Lollapalooza tour and Reading Festival in 1995, Virgin issued a B-sides and rarities compilation titled “Pisces Iscariot” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

For the follow-up album frontman Corgan wrote fifty-six songs which ultimately got narrowed down to twenty-eight for 1995’s “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, became double platinum selling, earned the band seven Grammy nominations and spawned the hits “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “1979”. Around this time The Smashing Pumpkins were considered one of the biggest bands in the world, with considerable airplay on MTV and an appearance on the Simpsons.

In 1996 touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and Chamberlin overdosed on heroin in a hotel room in New York City, Melvoin died and Chamberlin fortunately escaped the same fate. Chamberlin was subsequently fired and Corgan named “Mellon Collie…” the band’s last conventional rock album. True to his word the album’s follow-up “Adore” arrived in 1998 and represented a huge shift towards electronica and gothic influences. The album sold around 830,000 copies which was considered a failure by the record label. The band supported the release with a 17-date North American tour funded entirely out of the band’s pocket, of which they donated $2.8 million in total to charity over the course of.

After a short lived reunion with rehabilitated Chamberlin and the departure of Wretzky, who was replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur, The Smashing Pumpkins released their fifth full-length “Machina/The Machines of God” in 2000. The album performed poorly compared to its predecessors, however was argued to be one of their strongest. In 2000 the band announced they were disbanding after independently releasing “Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music” in September.

In 2005 Corgan took out a full-page ad in The Chicago Tribune to announce The Smashing Pumpkins were returning. Chamberlin was the only original other member to actually return, but alongside new guitarist Jeff Schroder and bassist Ginger Reyes they released the album “Zeitgiest” in 2007. From 2009 Corgan released a scattered selection of songs from a 44-track concept titled “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope” and followed by the full-length “Oceana” in 2010. The announcement of two new albums came in 2014 to tie up “Teargarden” concept, with the names “Monuments to an Elegy” and “Day for Night”.

Live reviews

I used to listen to Smashing Pumpkins growing up. I didn't listen to a lot of their stuff, probably only like a song or two, so it was kind of neat to see this concert. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I went to see them, but the concert performance was overall a lot more low key than I was expecting, but not in a bad way.

As it is, it's kind of what I expect from an alternate rock group. The venue is very fitting for this band and their performance, a dark place with low lighting giving off the feeling of low energy and little movement. There's a certain kind of drab intensity I feel while watching this concert, kind of like time has slowed down and the outside world doesn't exist, at least for now. It's oddly enjoyable.

During the songs, the crowd is very quiet, but will show their appreciation in between songs. Billy Corgan does a good job singing, as always. The rest of the band is very good as well, especially the drummer. Billy as I recollect him looks very young (due to this being over 20 years ago), and there's a grunge feel to the concert because of the times. The music and atmosphere feels kind of raw but in the grungy sort of way.

Report as inappropriate

If it had not been for the love, respect, and talent of the Pumpkins, the entire night would have been trash. A certain entertainer from across the pond is just a mirage of an oasis since splitting with his brother, but he made matters worse. From his first interactions with the crowd and everyone after, he made it a point to belittle the community, state, and fans with "F" bomb laden disparaging remarks. His condescending attitude oozed from every pure of his being. Hemade completely clear from comments such as the first of his set, 75% of his set, was "fucking for him" and "buy his fucking merchandise because he isn't making a dime just fucking performing there," made it evident that he truly was a wretched person consumed by greed and former fame. His parting shot was "fuck Rogers, fuck Arkansas, we're never fucking coming back to this fucking state again!" May he have a safe, expensive, and miserable stay and trip back from Arkansas and the United States.

The Pumpkins killed it as did AFI!

I didn't see Smashing Pumpkins lately. I saw them at the Arlene Schnitzer Auditorium in 2016 and the show was great but I didn't buy the tickets. I had a dream while napping the afternoon of the show telling me, I need to go up to the box office at the Schnitzer with $80 and see if I can get tickets. At that time I was listening to Siamese Dream everyday and finding for the first time so long after it was released I was amazed. We got to the box office and they were sold out so a guy in line was watching the whole thing and offered an extra ticket he had because his girlfriend didn't want to go and then another guy about 15 people back said basically the same thing, so I had 2 tickets for free for me and my date. It pays to listen to your dreams " Siamese Dream's" that is..

This was an amazing show! They played flawlessly in my opinion. From songs like 'Today', and 'Tonight, Tonight', to David Bowie's 'Fame' their energy tore the roof off the Warfield!!

What I especially liked was there was no opening act, it was just them, what I came to see!

This was one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time!

The last time I had an opportunity to see them was around 1992/1993 when they headlined Lollapalooza. At the time they only played one song because it seemed they were wasted on something! I remember being very disappointed with this.

This time I was happy to hear Billy say that he never appreciated the fans when he was younger, but now he does! This really reflected in their performance!

What a show! I am still in awe!

I had never been to a smashing pumpkins concert before and I didn't know what to expect. Their songs are great. They played all the ones I am familiar with. They sang awesome. However I was not impressed with their stage show. They just stood there like statues. The background set was boring. And the stage lights kept blinding me and gave me a headache. I actually fell asleep during smashing pumpkins. Marilyn Manson was also there. He was kick ass. Awesome stage show as always. Seen him like 5xs before. Interacted with the audience. Great background set and props as always. Loved it,the best part of the show was Manson!!!!

3 stars. Overall a good show and reasonably priced. They did a great job on a Bowie cover and the first half of the show was great. The second half was featured a lot of Zwan and their newer stuff which I like to call twitchy techo rock, Just not feeling it. They did a version of "Stand Inside Your Love" where Katie Cole leads the vocals, it was amazing. Billy's got a signature voice but I think it sounds better in a duet. Sorry to end on a bad note but, I don't know how you screw up Disarm but they found a way... Billy Solo with an organ. Skip the bad Rolling stones cover and get out before the encore.

I was fortunate enough to see this show in OKC on Saturday and then again on Wednesday in Dallas. Even though it was the same set both nights, I loved every second of it. While they do play a good amount of hits, some of the other tunes and covers they play are really what stand out over the 3+ hour set. The stage production is probably the best I've ever seen them have. I've seen The Smashing Pumpkins every chance I've had for the past 22 years and Billy and Jimmy still shred their instruments and impress me every time. If you're on the fence about this show, GO. You will not regret it.

garrett-j-bond’s profile image

I kind of feared the new lineup and new material would provide a less than thrilling night out but boy was I wrong. This is a very tight band and I was captivated by every song, including the many new ones I didn't know, because of the power and skill of the playing and the quality of the compositions. This was a guitar feast with two fabulous soloists taking it in turns to dazzle us. Especially in the second half of the show it was a ferocious sonic assault; classy, masterful, above all really heavy. For the nostalgic they played plenty of hits too. I loved it. Pumpkins still rule!

Pageo’s profile image

The Paramount Theater in Seattle seems to be a perfectly appropriate venue for the Smashing Pumpkins. The sound was very well managed - loud enough to rock but not so loud that it was just ringing.

I especially liked Billy's cover of Space Oddity but the rendition of Disarm with the Organ was odd to me, but then I love playing that tune on my acoustic guitar so I guess I am biased.

The only thing I didn't like was that leg room for the seats. It felt very cramped and tight. But is was easy to forget about that when listening to the band.

shane-tolman’s profile image

Best concert ever! The band was on fire, Corgan and Iha are a surprisingly good comic duo, the setlist was incredible with songs spanning all their career and surprise numbers like a Rolling Stones cover. The stage was magic, with giant puppets and light shows that really made the evening seem like something out of a dream.

The location is small and collected and the sound was PERFECT, contributing to the atmosphere: it seemed like an evening with friends, the gods descending between men to share stories and emotions.

Beyond good.

The Killers Live: What the ‘Hot Fuss’ Is About

The killers are set to prove why they’re second to none as a live band on their forthcoming tour of australia.

The Killers

It seems hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since The Killers splashed a sheen of showbiz across the international music scene with their debut album, Hot Fuss .

Direct from (viva) Las Vegas, the band combined soaringly epic Springsteen-esque arrangements with a Duran Duran dance-pop styling that immediately endeared the band to Australian audiences and saw them emerge during the competitive indie sleaze era that had already heralded the likes of The White Stripes, The Strokes, and Arcade Fire.

“I asked myself, ‘What is it that these bands are doing and why are they not still in their hometown?’ That’s what set us apart quite early on,” frontman Brandon Flowers told NME in December last year about The Killers emerging out of the local Vegas scene and taking on the world.

“We were different, and we were ambitious. Ambition can be seen as an ugly thing to some people but it has served us well. We were able to persevere and it’s kind of unbelievable.”

Playing Hot Fuss in full for its 20 th anniversary certainly seems a no-brainer. The instant classic is one of the strongest debut albums ever, amazing considering the band shelved every one of their intended songs – bar the beatific eternal melodrama of “Mr. Brightside” – upon hearing The Strokes’ debut LP, Is This It .

They managed to hunker down to write songs including the hits “Somebody Told Me,” “All These Things That I’ve Done,” and “Smile Like You Mean It,” plus album cuts that became fan favourites such as “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,” “On Top,” “Believe Me Natalie,” and “Midnight Show.”

Jenny Eliscu of Rolling Stone was effusive about the album in her July 2004 review. “Don’t be fooled by their retro threads and the the in their name: The Killers threaten to pry dance rock from the steely grip of hipsterdom and thrust it unrepentantly into the mainstream… this album is all Killers no filler,” she wrote at the time.

Hot Fuss hit #7 on the US Billboard list, topped the UK album charts for two weeks and landed at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart here in Australia, cementing The Killers as an international act who stood out stylistically from the rock renaissance acts such as The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Vines, The Kills, and Interpol.

The Killers recently performed a 10-night residency performing Hot Fuss in full at Caesars Palace Las Vegas, and if that doesn’t sound like showbiz itself then the actual show certainly is…

“The crowd (were) ecstatic as The Killers bear-hugged their debut and Las Vegas simultaneously,” the Las Vegas Review Journal stated of the residency’s second night,   “their elaborate set design festooned with one nod to their hometown after the next, from neon flamingos and showgirls to vintage footage of Circus Circus and the Riviera forming a by-turns glamorous and gritty backdrop.”

After some lineup swaps in recent years, The Killers are back to all their OG members – vocalist Flowers , guitarist Dave Keuning, drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr., and bassist Mark Stoermer. The ever-erudite and flamboyant Flowers seemed to certainly be feeling the moment, playing the band’s debut in their hometown.

“As you know, a lot of people come to Vegas to gamble,” he said when introducing the second song, “Mr. Brightside.” “And I’m no exception. I came here from a quiet town in Utah when I was just 16 years old. I had big dreams working as a busboy right here in Caesars Palace. And I bet my life on three men who I hardly knew. Some people come to Vegas and lose everything – that’s just the way it goes. But let tonight serve as a reminder: sometimes it goes the other way too.”

The Las Vegas Weekly was similarly dreamy about it all: “By the end of it, Flowers looked spent, chest heaving, his Nevada state pendant dangling. And with one final comment, the frontman gazed up into the crowd and proclaimed, ‘When we were young, we dreamed about this.'”

The Killers will perform two shows in Sydney and Melbourne, the first a  Rebel Diamonds  concert, featuring hits from across their 20-year career and a second being the performance of  Hot Fuss in its entirety, with an encore of song surprises from their other albums, including their new single “Bright Lights.”

They’re also heading to bringing Rebel Diamonds to Queensland. The Brisbane show might be sold out, but Killers fans in the state can still grab tickets for the Townsville date. With Flowers and co. kicking off their Australian adventure in Townsville, it’s sure to set the standard for the rest of the tour.

Whichever show you go to, though, it’s going to sparkle.
