Forget Ocean Liners: These 7 Luxe Air Cruises Will Take You Around the World in Record Time

By flying in small groups, say the organizers, guests dramatically cut the costs of private flight but enjoy similar perks of enhanced service and cuisine. These cruises are often connected to five-star hotels, have their own doctors and private chefs, and sometimes include private limousines and drivers for each couple or family—so if the airplane feels crowded, an escape is available on landing.

Private Jet Trips crossing multiple time zones have become extremely popular among wealthy travelers who want to see the world on their terms.

The trips use midsized business jets for regional travel or, for traversing time zones, “bizliners.” These are converted commercial jets with luxe interiors that feature a smaller number of seats (often recliners for sleeping) as well as open areas, a serious galley and larger bathrooms.

The Four Seasons Private Jet, for instance, is an Airbus A321 with just 48 seats to accommodate roughly a quarter of the passengers of the A321’s commercial configuration. The aircraft travels with an executive chef, doctor, a Four Seasons concierge, a journey manager, and an assistant journey manager. The jet also has a lounge.

The itinerary includes stargazing in Costa Rica with Costa Rican astronaut Franklin Chang Diaz, visiting the world’s largest waterfall system at Argentina’s Iguazú National Park, and taking a four-night cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula aboard a luxurious polar ship. There will also be a cocktail party at Machu Picchu and a private concert by the Bogotá Philharmonic, among other insider-access events.

Not everyone can clear three weeks to join a standard tour. For the time-strapped, the brand is debuting more family-friendly programs for 2024 and 2025 that cover more ground in less time.

Its African Wonders tour takes travelers across a wide swath of geography in 13 days, starting in Athens with a visit to the Parthenon, before heading south through the African continent to see Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza, Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and attractions in Rwanda, Mauritius, Zambia, and South Africa.

There are also smaller group trips closer to home. Starting at $227,000 for two adults, Four Seasons Resorts Hawaii is partnering with VistaJet and Lanai Air to curate a four-island journey showcasing Hawaii’s history, culture, and natural beauty for private parties of up to eight.

VistaJet has fashioned its own Private World tours that range from single destinations to longer, multi-stop itineraries. Its three-week tour of Southeast Asia , in association with Ariodante, begins in Jakarta before heading to Sangiran and Cambodia to explore the remnants of the Khmer Empire, including the temples of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm. Following that is a helicopter trip into Vietnam’s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park for a four-day trek through the jungle with a team of experts into the world’s largest cave, Hang Son Doong.

Abercrombie & Kent’s Wings Over Europe’s Iconic Capitals is an air adventure that spends 11 days experiencing the best of London, Paris, Rome, and Athens.

Limited to 13 guests, the tour takes you by private charter to the changing of the Mounted Guard in London, breakfast atop the Eiffel Tower, and a secret passage that connects Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo with the Vatican. Afterward, you’ll travel along the Athenian Riviera by electric trike.

Private Jet Trips crossing multiple time zones have become extremely popular among wealthy travelers who want to see the world on their terms.

By contrast, the company’s Africa: Across a Continent by Private Jet is a 22-day trip that explores the continent’s natural and manmade treasures, from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the Serengeti to the mountain gorillas of Rwanda to the medina of Marrakech.

Starting at $134,000 per person, the aircraft is a converted Boeing 757 with just 48 recliners for crisscrossing Africa. The journey includes exclusive access to many of the sites, including the Sphinx in Egypt, a hot-air balloon trip over the Serengeti, luxury safari camps in the bush, and glamping in the Sahara. Helicopter trips, wine-tastings and even a voodoo ceremony are also options.

“This is the next best thing to having your own private jet,” says Stefanie Schmudde, vice president of product development at Abercrombie & Kent. “Guests enjoy the benefits of private air, while on an itinerary that makes the most of each day.” Put another way: Maximizing time is why these air cruises work.

11 epic around-the-world cruises that will check off all your bucket list travel destinations

Janice Wald Henderson

Imagine the joys of traveling seamlessly from one bucket list country to another without packing and unpacking, switching hotels, boarding countless flights or even doing laundry.

Think it's a fantasy? It's actually a world cruise, the nirvana of many ocean-going devotees. As a bonus, most of these around-the-world voyages include enviable perks, like pre-cruise hotel stays, alcohol, shipboard credit, exclusive-access shore excursions — and, yes, laundry service.

Retired, taking a job hiatus or working remotely? A world cruise is a safe, easy and exhilarating way to score a global adventure beyond compare. You might even make new lifelong friends sharing similar interests.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

So, pull out your travel wish list and find an itinerary for those coveted destinations.

Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 11 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Around-the-world cruise cost

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

Read on to discover where you can sail to in 2025 on a world cruise.

World Voyage

Thanks to an overwhelming response to its 2024 world cruise (which is currently waitlisted), Azamara announced itineraries for both 2025 and 2026, both aboard the 684-passenger Azamara Onward.

Azamara Onward is the newest ship to join the Miami-based line's four-vessel fleet. The ship's size provides an intimate experience and allows it to call on small towns bigger ships can't access.

For 2025, the 155-night, 37-country voyage begins in San Diego and ends in Southampton, England, with visits to exciting locales in French Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Italy, France and others.

Along the way, world cruisers can sample authentic Hawaiian cuisine; explore the unspoiled beaches and the lush rainforest on Stewart Island, New Zealand; and visit the world's largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia.

The itinerary will include a pre-sailing welcome party, exclusive cultural events, concierge service and other upscale perks.

The 2026 world cruise sets sail from Miami and concludes in Barcelona. The itinerary for this 155-night expedition features some of the world's most iconic landmarks and sites.

Cruisers will have the opportunity to explore the great pyramid of Kukulcan and other ancient Mayan sites in Chichen Itza, Mexico; wander among Rio de Janeiro's architectural gems and experience the awe of Iguazu Falls in Brazil; sample Peruvian cuisine and soak in the landscape of Machu Picchu in Cusco; scale the Great Wall of China; and enjoy other bucket-list worthy adventures.

The 2025 world cruise departs Jan. 6, 2025. Prices start from $89,001 per person.

Air Cruises – Comparing Six Private Jet Holidays Around the World

We explore six different ways to travel around the world, in a small group, on a private jet. This is air cruise, by companies like Four Seasons, Aman and National Geographic.

Instead of cruising on the sea, you can cruise in a customised aircraft, with a small group of like-minded travellers. It’s not private, but you enjoy many of the advantages of flying in a private jet.

These air cruises connect some of the world’s most exceptional and inaccessible destinations, in a short amount of time. We take a deep dive into the world’s six best air cruise options.

What is an Air Cruise?

air cruise around the world

The biggest benefits of a private jet are time and convenience. You fly directly between any two locations, without layovers, long land transfers or inconvenient flight schedules.

This is the biggest advantage of an air cruise. You fly between exotic destinations that are very difficult to combine on a normal holiday. Itineraries connect six to ten different destinations, either in one continent or crossing the entire world.

Imagine a holiday in the Americas incorporating New Orleans, Costa Rica, Machu Picchu, Buenos Aires, Antarctica, Bogota and Bahamas. All with direct flights at convenient times!

The aircraft offers the luxury associated with a private jet, like lie-flat seats, large bathrooms and a private onboard chef. Most operators customise a large jet with around 50 business-class seats.

However, it’s not actually a private jet, because it’s not a jet that’s private for you. You’ll travel with 15 – 70 other people depending on the operator, plus guides. You can customise your experiences on the ground, but the overall itinerary has no room for your own individualisation.

But imagine a three-week expedition around the Arctic visiting seven wonders of the north, places you simply can’t get to without private aircraft!

Prices range from EUR 60,000 to EUR 200,000 for a three-week trip and this usually includes all flights and transportation, five-star hotel accommodation, most activities, meals and drinks.

We compare six different options and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Four Seasons Air Cruise

Four Seasons offer the widest program of air cruises, on board their custom Airbus A321LR, with 48 fully flat seats across 12 rows in a 2×2 configuration.

The two to three-week itineraries travel to many of the world’s best destinations. Clarification: the world’s best destinations with a Four Seasons property. In rare cases they do use other accommodation, for example, for gorilla trekking in Rwanda . But this is a Four Seasons hotel and resort tour, so it will only appeal to fans of the brand.

The itineraries really are once-in-a-lifetime. For example, African wonders visits Athens , The Pyramids, Serengeti , Mauritius , Rwanda , Victoria Falls and Johannesburg, in two weeks for USD 135,000.

Ancient Explorer combines Miami, Mexico City , Easter Island, Bora Bora , the Great Barrier Reef, Bangkok, Petra , The Pyramids, Sicily and Madrid , in three weeks for USD 190,000. Four Seasons is clearly the winner if you want a wide choice of itineraries and departure dates.

There’s a big emphasis on customising your experience on the ground, although 48 passengers is a pretty large group. And while Four Seasons offers a reassuring quality, you don’t need to increase your budget by much to enjoy a fully private air cruise on your own jet.

National Geographic Expeditions

Air cruises by National Geographic Expeditions are usually a little longer and quite a lot cheaper. Their niche itineraries are extremely interesting, mixing an exceptional variety of destinations.

Routes typically focus on the world’s natural and cultural wonders, or a deep educational insight into the world. For example, 24 days exploring The Wildlife of the World (USD 99,995), or a 24-day trip exploring global innovation from Kyoto to Singapore , Samarkand and Tallinn.

Their signature 24-day Around the World by Private Jet starts at USD 96,995. It combines Cusco, Machu Picchu, Easter Island, Samoa, Great Barrier Reef, Angkor Wat , Kathmandu in Nepal , Bhutan, Taj Mahal, Serengeti, Petra and Marrakech .

Like Four Seasons Air Cruise, most departures are from the United States, which will add cost and time. The National Geographic jet is a Boeing 757 customised to accommodate 75 guests in business class seating.

Accommodation is generally of a good standard but not the very best available. We think they can up their game a little on this point. Instead, the selling point is being accompanied by National Geographic’s experts, such as their magazine editors. It means there’s less customisation of your experience on the ground, but you’re accompanied by some of the world’s most knowledgeable guides.

Arctic Horizon

air cruise around the world

A newcomer to the air cruise scene, Arctic Horizon is operated by the same amazing people as HL Adventure, our trusted local partner in Iceland . The Arctic expedition is a long-time dream of HL Adventure founder Jon Olafur Magnusson. Jon told us:

The idea for Arctic Horizon has evolved over 20 years. It’s a three-week Arctic expedition by private jet for 50 like-minded explorers. This is the culmination of my life’s work.

The Arctic Horizon expedition travels to seven wonders of the North by private Boeing 757-200, configured with 50 first-class lie-flat seats, plus butler service and our onboard chef.

Iceland to Greenland, then west to Canada , north to Alaska , the North Pole, Svalbard, Norway and back to Iceland. You visit locations that are very difficult to visit without a private jet, which contrasts the other air cruise companies, who typically use destinations you can comfortably reach on commercial flights with layovers.

Of all the air cruise itineraries, this is the most authentic in terms of the experiences on offer. It’s a very specialised trip with the leading Arctic experts, staying at the best accommodation in the Arctic Circle.

The inaugural three-week expedition launches in summer 2024, from 16 July to 4 August. It costs USD 187,000 per person, which includes almost all meals, activities and drinks.

Interested in an Air Cruise?

Aman jet expedition.

Aman’s air cruises are more exclusive, limited to only seven to nine couples travelling in an Airbus ACJ318. They’re operated by tour company Remote Lands and only use Aman resorts and hotels for accommodation.

Each couple has a private car, driver and guide for each day of the expedition, so the on-the-ground experiences and exploration is completely customisable and private. This really isn’t a group trip and the small private jet is designed as a cocktail party in the sky between destinations.

Aman’s itineraries do not connect the most interesting places in the world, they’re really a tour of Aman properties. Aman only has 34 hotels and resorts in 20 countries, whereas Four Seasons has 124 in 47 countries.

The Grandest Tour spends 21 nights over seven countries and eight Aman resorts, for USD 158,888. Aman Tokyo and Amanemu in Japan ; Amantaka in Laos; Amanpuri in Thailand ; Amankora in Bhutan; Amanbagh in India ; Amanruya in Bodrum , Turkey ; Amanzoe in Greece .

Most of Aman’s properties are in Europe and Asia, so this is a great option if you like the Aman brand and really want to explore these two continents. Plus, departing or ending in Europe is more convenient than a Four Seasons or National Geographic departure from the USA .

With Aman Jet Expeditions you are quite limited in terms of itinerary and departure dates, but you’ll enjoy more exclusivity and a similar, if not higher, level of luxury than Four Seasons, at a similar price.

Safrans du Monde

Operating for almost 20 years now, Safrans du Monde is an air cruise on a budget. It’s very good value and the trips depart from Paris, so convenience is an advantage too.

We love the Safrans du Monde itineraries and how they seamlessly connect the icons of the world. These are trips for experiencing many one-in-a-lifetime places in only three weeks.

Take their signature The World Tour Grand Classiques: Paris to Rio de Janeiro , to Cusco and Machu Picchu, then Easter Island, French Polynesia, Sydney, Hanoi and Halong Bay in Vietnam , Angkor Wat in Cambodia, before ending with the Taj Mahal in Agra and Petra in Jordan. The 22-day trip costs EUR 68,000 in Club Safrans class and EUR 105,000 in Premiere Safrans.

The aircraft is fitted with 76 seats in two classes. At each destination you will do activities in groups of up to 16 passengers (Premiere class) or 25 passengers (Club class).

Club Safrans uses entry-level five-star accommodation and we wouldn’t usually recommend any of these hotels for our clients going on a holiday. For example, Fairmont in Rio instead of Belmond, Sofitel or Hilton in French Polynesia, instead of Intercontinental Bora Bora or Conrad Bora Bora in Premiere class. It’s a business class level service on the jet.

Hotels in the Premiere Safrans category are significantly better, but we’re a little disappointed that they don’t use the best of the best accommodation in every destination. This class has first-class lie-flat seats on board and a wider inclusion of better activities.

Surprisingly though, Safrans du Monde only offers a few annual departures. All the itineraries are incredible, you’re just limited on when you can travel.

A Fully Private Jet Journey with EliteVoyage

air cruise around the world

There isn’t one air cruise holiday for everyone. For us the best combination would be the diverse choice of Four Seasons, exclusivity of Aman, specialism of Arctic Horizon and the route creation of Safrans du Monde or National Geographic.

With EliteVoyage you can do this. The ultimate air cruise is a fully private air cruise, to anywhere you want to, anytime you want to travel, with only the people you invite. Truly a private jet around the world. We’ve actually designed and delivered this for one of our clients.

Imagine a 23-day journey going from Iceland to Alaska, then Hawaii, Fiji , Papua New Guinea and Angkor Wat. Imagine a journey going to the seven main wonders on your travel bucket list.

The advantages are endless. Depart directly from Prague. Create your own itinerary, in terms of destinations, hotels and experiences. Travel on a small private jet customised to your needs.

Evidently, this is the most expensive air cruise option. However, when you have six or more passengers, the price is comparable to a Four Seasons air cruise.

The trip continues to Singapore, where the group will visit the Colonial district, Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam, the Gardens of the Bay, and round out the evening with a 360 degrees view of the city from Sky Park observatory for the nightly lights and water show.

The journey continues through southeast Asia to Hanoi, Vietnam, where visitors can take a rickshaw ride, visit the Temple of Literature, and face the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The next stop is Halong bay, an oasis of nature famed for its crystal waters and thousands of monoliths covered in greenery.

A short hop later, passengers are in Cambodia, home of the Angkor Temples, by early afternoon. The following day includes a visit to Angkor Wat, Ta Phrom temple, Angkor Thom town, and a gala dinner, set in a privatized temple and orchestrated by the Asparas Royal Ballet dances.

The following day, the journey continues to the United Arab Emirates, home of the World Exposition in Dubai. Petra and Wadi Rum desert, Jordan

Petra Tour du Monde

It seems like an initiatory path. The one that guides you to the Treasury - as is called the temple of Petra - leads you between two narrow sandstone walls to then reveal the wonder. In full light, there lies the tomb of Kazneh. Its 40-meter-high facade was carved out of the pristine canyon. Its color changes from pink to coppery iridescent white and even gold as it dances with the daylight. Here is the splendid testimony of the Nabataeans, the pinnacle of a vast religious citadel carved at the beginning of our era. Before your final excursion in the desert of Wadi Rum, comes the time of celebration. Our team wishes it to be the apotheosis of your trip. It must sum up all the wonders that have paraded before you during these 22 days. We promise, you will never forget it. Shouldn’t we immortalize it with a picture? The photographer is already there and the party begins. It will be worthy of the Arabian Nights, just like your World Tour!

November 12 th : Agra - Aqaba

At the end of the morning you’ll have a quick flight to take you to Aqaba. By the time you have finished your on-board lunch you will be in the land of the Nabataeans, a nomadic people who were travellers ahead of their time. You will then travel along the road of kings and have time to appreciate the unique scenery before finally reaching the amazing city of Petra.

November 13 th : Petra

This morning you will wake up impatient to see the most exceptional sight that the famous city of Petra has for you, the treasure that is half-built and half-sculpted out of rock and out of time. You will explore the marvels of this place and stroll between those warmly coloured rocks which are so imbued with history. Surrounded by scenery that could be from a movie-set, you will understand how sensitive these nomadic people are when you see the delicate sculptures they have made out of the rock. You will have lunch and then continue exploring. Dinner itself will also reflect the traditions of this new culture which has come to augment the scope of culture experienced in this World Trip. We have planned the ultimate event for this last evening, set against a fantastically poignant background. You will enjoy a sumptuous party under the stars, as exotic as the Arabian Nights, and as fabulous as your World Trip.

November 14 th : Wadi Rum - Aqaba - Paris

Today you are going to meet the Wadi Rum desert Bedouins. You are going to explore the fantastic scenery of a huge desert of undulating sand dunes in a 4x4. You will share your lunch with our hosts at a camp, very close to the local people, so you can observe their lifestyle at close quarters and understand their traditions. After this moving, dazzling experience you will once again board your private jet, this time to fly back to France. After your flight and last onboard dinner you will be back in the French capital and your World Tour will have come to a full circle.

This Business Class-only Airline Just Debuted a 22-day Trip Around the World

Like an around-the-world cruise, except on a stunning aircraft with lie-flat beds.

air cruise around the world

Going on an around-the-world cruise is, irrefutably, one of the ultimate luxury travel goals. Discovering far-flung countries, communities, and cultures during a single trip is an exhilarating adventure, albeit one that typically takes months to complete. So, if you've always dreamed of going around the world but don't necessarily have half-a-year's worth of vacation days to spare (or get seasick easily), consider La Compagnie 's new Air Cruise.

The French airline teamed up with Safrans du Monde , a luxury travel agency, to offer an all-inclusive (and ultra-exclusive) world tour with a bespoke itinerary of must-visit destinations, guided tours, and stays in the best hotels around the world.

The Air Cruise launches in Paris where guests will board La Compagnie's A321neo plane, which features only 76 sleeper seats. Ultra-soft mattress toppers, free in-flight Wi-Fi, and gourmet chef-prepared meals paired with the finest wines and Champagne are some of the high-end onboard amenities that will make this trip unforgettable.

The first stop of your world journey will be bustling Mexico City. From there, you'll head further west to Hawaii and then south to Fiji. Up next, you'll sail in the fjords of the Southern Alps in New Zealand and discover the picturesque city of Hobart in Tasmania. Then, your private jet will take you to Perth to experience all that this beautiful Australian city has to offer. Relax in the turquoise waters of the Maldives before you fly to Rwanda for a memorable gorilla trek.

The itinerary is optimized such that, on travel days, you'll spend only a few hours in the air giving you plenty of time to explore each destination. And of course, since you'll fly private, lengthy layovers or overcrowded planes become a thing of the past.

You can choose between two packages — Club Safrans (rates start at $53,000), which includes all of your lodging at five-star hotels, and Premiere Safrans (rates start at 83,000), which also offers exclusive excursions at each destination — and add a three-night stay in Paris to your itinerary for an additional fee. The tour leaves on Nov. 5, 2022 and ends on Nov. 26, and you can book the experience here .

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora Lagoon View

Programma en excursies

Dag 1 - amsterdam - cartagena, colombia.

Vliegtijd: 13.10 uur (plus tankstop) Tijdsverschil: - 7.00 uur

Vandaag schrijft u reisgeschiedenis!

Uw hotel: Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena

SPREAD CARTAGENA

Dag 4 - Cartagena - Amazone, Peru

Vliegtijd Cartagena - Iquitos, Peru: 2.30 uur Geen tijdsverschil

Kayak Amazone

Dag 7 - Amazone - Santiago, Chili

Vliegtijd Iquitos - Santiago, Chili: 4.45 uur Tijdsverschil Iquitos - Santiago, Chili: + 1 uur

Santiago Chili

Dag 9 - Santiago - Paaseiland

Vliegtijd Santiago - Paaseiland, Chili: 5.15 uur Tijdsverschil Santiago - Paaseiland, Chili: - 2 uur

Uw hotel: Explora Rapa Nui

Paaseiland (2)

Dag 11 - Paaseiland - Papeete - Bora Bora

Vliegtijd Paaseiland - Papeete: 5.50 uur Vliegtijd Papeete - Bora Bora: 0.50 uur (lokale vlucht) Tijdsverschil Paaseiland - Bora Bora, Frans-Polynesië: - 4 uur

Four Seasons Bora Bora - Pool

Dag 14 & 15 - Bora Bora - Papeete - Darwin, Australië

Vliegtijd Bora Bora - Papeete: 0.50 uur Vliegtijd Papeete - Darwin: 11.50 uur (plus tankstop) Tijdsverschil Bora Bora - Darwin, Australië: + 19.30 uur

In Darwin wonen ruim zestig nationaliteiten.

Vliegtijd Darwin - Yogyakarta, Indonesië: 3.15 uur Tijdsverschil Darwin - Yogyakarta: -2.30 uur

Dag 21 - Yogyakarta - Udaipur, India

Vliegtijd Yogyakarta - Udaipur, India: 7.30 uur Tijdsverschil Yogyakarta - Udaipur, India: -1.30 uur

Uw hotel: Taj Lake Palace

Taj Lake Palace aerial

Dag 22 & 23 - Udaipur

35 Around-the-World Cruises You Can Take Through 2026

W hile Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise , a nine-month voyage that started in December 2023, made a lot of noise on social media, it’s certainly not the only around-the-world cruise on the market right now. Far from it. There are 35 world cruises departing in 2024, 2025, and 2026 across 11 cruise lines, all with varying itineraries, durations, and prices, allowing you to take your pick. An around-the-world cruise is often thought of as the pinnacle of a  sailing vacation . Some cruisers treat these multi-month journeys as once-in-a-lifetime trips; others are frequent guests, a world cruise but one piece of their annual travel plans. There are also the enduring tales of older travelers who elect for extended world voyages as an unconventional retirement plan . (Though as onboard WiFi becomes more reliable, it's now possible to work remote from many cruise ships, as well.)

Whatever the reason, the allure of this mode of travel is strong. Why not unpack once, enjoying fairy godmother-like service, exemplary amenities, and always-changing views for months on end? Plenty of cruisers with time and money on their hands do exactly that, choosing an extended at-sea lifestyle for at least a portion of the year. Around-the-world cruises often run from early January through March or April, although new off-season itineraries are being introduced.

If an epic voyage across multiple oceans and continents fits into your future, be prepared to plan the trip far in advance. World cruises have a strong following among cruisers—many of the sailings can sell out up to a year before departure. Travelers can also book shorter “segments” joining the ship for only a portion of the journey, but cruise lines often add significant value-adds to those booking the entire voyage—everything from free business class airfare to other exclusives like special parties and invite-only shore excursions.

Here's everything travelers need to know about taking an around-the-world cruise, including tricks from veteran world cruisers, booking tips, and some of the best itineraries in 2025 and beyond.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Booking tips for around-the-world cruises

How much is a cruise to go around the world.

World cruises, which may not actually circumnavigate the globe entirely, but are generally in a category that covers at least three continents and lasts from 90 to 150 days, generally start around $140 per passenger per night based on double occupancy. All in all, the cost of 100-plus day world cruise can range from $16,000 to over $800,000 per person, depending on the line and cabin type.

Is an around the world cruise worth it?

That’s certainly subjective, but travelers already accustomed to cruising—who appreciate the amenities of a ship and the lifestyle of a new port to view through the window every few days—will likely consider world cruises good value.

How much does a 180-day cruise around the world cost?

The longest world voyages we found generally lasted up to 140 to 150 days at their upper limits, although Oceania Cruises world cruises can be 180 days or more, starting at $48,799 per passenger.

Advice from frequent world cruisers

Roger Foenander and his partner David Mutton—loyalists to Viking Cruises —note the lack of pressure to see and do things within a tight timeframe on longer journeys, which provides plenty of freedom to relax. That might mean attending onboard enrichment lectures, spending the afternoon playing cards with fellow passengers, or dipping into the onboard spa and sauna before cocktail hour.

Linda Wiseman, who has traveled with Cunard , suggests new faces can help get ahead of any monotony: “In the dining room, we tell the maître d’ not to seat us with another couple who is sailing the whole thing—that way, our seat mates switch every few weeks, and we can meet different people.”

New Orleans-based philanthropist and veteran world cruiser Phyllis Taylor observes that these sailings are a class set apart, without the frenzied pace of shorter itineraries: “The difference between a short cruise and a  world cruise  is night and day, storm and calm, fleeting thought and thoughtfulness. I enter the bar in the evening, in no time my favorite song is being played, my favorite drinks sit before me. I go to dinner and my favorite table is waiting for me, and my waiter has already served the iced water with lemon just as I like it."

But the real value of a world cruise, Taylor says, is the chance to fully immerse in and savor the experience: “With an extended cruise you absorb the lifestyle of life at sea; with the great advantage of having a crew and staff that treats you like royalty.”

Silversea Silver Cloud

You can book world cruises in their entirety or join one leg of the journey for a shorter voyage.

Silversea’s 136-day sailing onboard their newest ship, Silver Dawn , will embark in Tokyo in January 2025. Called Controtempo , the cruise will sail in the opposite direction and season of many world cruises, taking in Japan and China in January before heading to Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives , and Seychelles in February. The ship will spend the spring making its way up Africa’s Atlantic Coast—arriving in the Baltic Sea before cruising to Iceland and Greenland (an uncommon call for World Cruises), then tracing Newfoundland and New England to New York.

Fares start at $77,560 “Port-to-Port” or $79,060 “Door-to-Door,” which includes business class airfare and transfers—including pickups and drop-offs in the traveler’s home city.

Princess Cruises

Most world cruises departing from North America head to sea in January, but in 2026 Princess Cruises will be offering 114-day World Cruises during the northern summer. Departing in early May from Auckland, New Zealand; or Sydney or Brisbane, Australia (mid-autumn in the Southern Hemisphere), the sailings are timed to arrive in Western and Northern Europe during the peak of summer, promising endless sunny days.

The sailing also has a number of long stretches of sea days for cruisers who like time to unwind and enjoy the amenities of the ship, Crown Princess . Some of the longer ocean crossings, like Brisbane to Bali and Colombo, Sri Lanka to Aqaba, Jordan will take a week or longer, while three other ocean crossings are at least four days.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has already opened their 2027 world cruise for booking—and they have a tendency to sell out quickly. It will be the first year a larger Explorer Class ship, the Seven Seas Splendor , will undertake the world voyage, calling at 71 ports en route from Miami to New York in January 2027.

The routing will take the ship from the Caribbean to the Pacific coast of Mexico via the Panama Canal, Hawaii, several ports in French Polynesia (calling twice at both Moorea and Bora Bora), Australia, Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and Bermuda before arriving in New York.

Early bookers will get a long list of added amenities, including first class airfare, a pre-cruise gala in Miami, exclusive shoreside experiences in Panama City, Colombo, and Málaga , unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, gratuities, transfers, door-to-door luggage service, and unlimited laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing. Fares start at $91,449 per passenger and go up to $839,999 per passenger for the ship’s most luxurious suite.

Oceania Cruises

Many world cruises depart in January and sail in the 100- to 140-day range, mostly wrapping up by April or May. Oceania’s 180-day world cruises last until midsummer, and are often “true” around-the-world sailings, ending in the same port they first embarked from.

Oceania’s 2025 Global Horizons sailing lasts a whopping 196 days onboard Insignia , roundtrip from Miami. The sailing includes several destinations in the Eastern Caribbean, and—extraordinary for a world voyage—a week of scenic cruising along the Amazon River . The voyage continues in South America before crossing the Atlantic to the remote islands of Tristan de Cunha, a British Overseas Territory, before making landfall again in Namibia , tracing the African coast through South Africa, Mozambique, and the French department of Mayotte (another rare stop for a cruise), island-hopping in the Indian Ocean before calling in India.

The sailing covers a lot of ground in Asia—Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia—before cruising the west and south coasts of Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. Crossing the Pacific to San Diego the ship then hops down the coasts of Mexico and Central America through the Panama Canal before returning to Miami in mid-July.

Oceania’s 2026 Around the World in 180 Days sailing is also roundtrip from Miami. Sailing westbound, the itinerary covers the east and west coasts of South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, and much of the Middle East before transiting the Mediterranean to spend significant time in northwestern Europe and the Baltic Sea before crossing the far north Atlantic via Iceland and Canada before returning to Miami.

Starting fares for each of the world voyages currently range from $48,799 to to $57,999, including a number of value-adds like roundtrip airfare and airport transfers, plus a number of added onboard amenities.

7 of the best river cruises around the world for 2024

A cruise holiday isn’t always about setting sail across vast oceans. For an alternative type of break on the water, winding your way inland might sound similar but it’s a vastly different experience.

From crossing deep into the untouched areas of the Amazon rainforest to exploring some of Europe ’s finest cities, the river cruise experience is one that allows tourists to get to grips with the history, culture and tradition of a destination in a slow, immersive fashion.

This could be in the form of sampling Creole cuisine in Mississippi or discovering historic sites in Vietnam , but whatever it is, there’s plenty of choice across Europe , Asia , South America and North America .

Read on for a selection of the best cruises, from the Mississippi to the Mekong.

Europe’s second longest river – and arguably its most famous – river takes you through amazing capital cities and host of charming towns, as well as plenty of scenic countryside in Austria , Hungary , Slovakia and Romania. Cruises along the Danube can vary from a handful of days to almost three weeks, giving you time to explore the elegance of cities like Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava or Belgrade.

Emerald Cruises lets you see the best of the Danube with the addition of a hefty dose of traditional German culture in Munich. Leaving the Bavarian capital, you’ll travel to Passau before a quick cross-border trip to the Unesco-listed Czech city of Cesky Krumlov. Vienna is the next city, replete with opulent architecture, before a quick overnight stay in Bratislava on the sixth night. Guided tours and hikes around the castle are included, before you get three nights to explore Budapest, the Hungarian capital that is blessed with picturesque buildings, relaxed thermal baths and a buzzing nightlife scene.

From £1,999pp, including nine nights’ accommodation, full board, tours of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and airport transfers. Departing 7 May 2024 to 20 October 2024.

This famous river runs for over 4,000 miles throughout South America and is a major part of the eponymous rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and important natural areas on the planet. A river cruise remains the best way to reach deeper into the jungle, with many cruises beginning in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus or in the Peruvian city of Lima.

Start in Peru’s enchanting capital with the Peruvian Rivers and Rainforest Discovery cruise from Uniworld. You’ll fly to Iquitos, the largest city in the Amazon as your next stop, before delving into some of the most remote areas in the world as you take to the waters. From here, nature takes centre stage, with a variety of experiences – including jungle walks and kayaking on a lake – added to the enjoyment of natural features such as giant lilies, towering barrigona trees and around 10 per cent of the world’s known animal species.

From £8,799pp, including 10 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London, domestic flights and various excursions. Departing regularly from 17 January until 6 November 2024.

Start in  Cairo  and make your way down to Aswan over a few days (though many shorter routes operate between  Aswan and Luxor  only). For a relaxing way to take in riverside scenery and some of Egypt’s most important historical sites, a river cruise is the ideal choice.

AP Touring’s  Egypt Discovery  trip takes you on a round trip from Cairo. You’ll cross thousands of years of history, starting with West Bank the Valley of the Kings, before a short flight to Aswan to explore Abu Simbel and a sighting of the landmark Pyramids of Giza near the Egyptian capital. The scenery along the route is exceptional, too, with palm trees, green spaces and mini oases dotted in between the yellow-hued rock.

From £6,995pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, 30 meals (including unlimited local beer and wine) return flights from London Heathrow, domestic flights within Egypt and activities in each of the 10 destinations. Departing regularly from September 2024 to April 2025.

Exploring this land of castles and fairytales is a worthwhile European trip, with tours often starting in the pretty Dutch capital of Amsterdam and weaving across the German and French countryside, with the route broken up by cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf and Strasbourg. Many of the towns located on the banks of the Rhine, such as Koblenz, are incredibly picturesque, with a range of medieval castles and natural sites like the Black Forest also featuring.

Ama Waterways provide a seven-night cruise that runs from Basel to Amsterdam. Get your cultural fix at either end of your trip in either of these two cities, before admiring the vistas around the Rhine Valley, the medieval castles that loom over towns like Heidelberg and the timber-framed buildings that line the streets of Riquewihr and Strasbourg. Stops in both Freiburg and Dusseldorf are also included, as well as an optional excursion to Cologne.

From £2,399pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and tours in each destination. Departing regularly between 18 February and 28 December 2024.

The views around the Douro Valley are some of the best in Portugal , whether you’re sitting by the banks in Porto or admiring the verdant hills and vineyards around Pinhao. This region, well-known for its port production, has cruises lasting roughly one week that usually begin and end in Porto – where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean – with a brief crossing over into Spain and Salamanca.

The Riviera Travel package offers an affordable eight-day Douro option starting and ending in Porto , with two nights to explore Portugal’s magnificent second city (and to go on a guided tour of a well-known port producer). Days three and four take you to sleepy Castelo de Rodrigo and the historic Spanish city of Salamanca (with guided tours and time to explore at your leisure) before traversing the cascading vineyards of the valley on your way back to Porto via the beautiful Peso de Regua (and a local wine tasting).

From £1,599pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board, flights from a London airport, one excursion one each day and airport transfers. Departing regularly from 7 April 2024.

The Mississippi

Discovering the Deep South is often done by car, but with new routes recently from Viking Cruises, exploring Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota and Tennessee has never been more idyllic. The famed cities of New Orleans and Memphis can bookend your tour, with lesser-known locations such as Baton Rouge, Natchez and Darrow making up the other stops.

Opt for Viking’s ‘Heart of the Delta’ cruise to if you really want to immerse yourself in the Deep South. The cruise begins with a few days exploring the French influences and Creole cuisine of New Orleans , before moving on to Baton Rouge – a haven of Creole and Cajun culture – and then onto Natchez, the oldest city on the river. You’ll travel through other towns on the Mississippi – complete with walking tours or excursions to the Atchafalaya Swamp basin – before reaching Memphis, the atmospheric home of blues music.

The Mekong flows through a host of Asia’s most fascinating countries, including Vietnam , Thailand , China and Cambodia. Most cruises only take in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia , though this mix of floating fishing villages, traditional markets and the two capitals of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh will be enough for most travellers. With Avalon Waterways , you’ll combine energetic, modern cities with some of the most vibrant culture in Asia and a history that is equal parts sobering and fascinating.

It starts in Siem Reap, site of the Angkor Wat temple, before moving on to the Cambodian capital, where you can learn about the dictatorship of Pol Pot and visit several must-see landmarks. After this, Vietnam beckons, with a visit to the dizzying Ho Chi Minh City to see its admirable architecture. Visits to markets, old Vietnam War tunnels, temples and cooking classes are dotted in between these city trips for good measure, with stops at characterful towns like Vinh Long, too.

From £4,229pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and activities on each day of the trip. Departing regularly from 15 January to 11 March and from 12 August to 2 December 2024.

Princess is launching an all-inclusive, 4-month, around-the-world cruise for $20,000— see what it'll be like

  • Princess Cruises announced a 114-day  world cruise to 52 destinations in 2026, starting at $20,000 per person.
  • Guests who book early would get a free, all-inclusive package, a first for Princess' global itineraries.
  • Extended and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the vacation industry.

Insider Today

Princess Cruise's new around-the-world voyage will hit two vacation trends in one itinerary.

In January 2026, the company says its Coral Princess will embark on a 114-day cruise to 52 ports in 28 countries and six continents — more destinations than any of its previous global sailings .

It's the Carnival Corp brand's latest appeal to the extended cruising trend . But it's not the only fad this four-month vacation is targeting.

The sailing, which starts at $20,000 per person, also marks the first time Princess is offering a complimentary all-inclusive package as a way to entice early bookings.

Ultra-long and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the industry.

Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, and Oceania's 2024 around-the-world cruises all sold out before departing in January. The former was fully booked within three hours, while every cabin on the latter was called for in 30 minutes.

Besides being high-end, these three companies share one commonality: some level of all-inclusiveness , as is common with premium cruise lines.

Mass-market cruise companies rarely go the all-inclusive route.

Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are generally beloved for their affordability.

But if you want to experience all their ships have to offer, be prepared to face a list of up-charged amenities like pay-to-play rides and specialty restaurants . After all, there's a reason their base fares are much cheaper than their increasingly popular ultra-luxury, all-inclusive counterparts.

But Princess has been increasingly vying for a slice of the luxury cruiser pie.

The cruise line says guests who book its 2026 world cruise early (that is, by the end of October) will receive its most inclusive Princess Premier package for free. The perk — launched two years ago — covers amenities that typically have a fee, like WiFi, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, and workout classes.

Travelers who reserve one of the ship's high-end cabins by the same deadline would also receive complimentary airport transfers and airfare, services normally exclusively offered by luxury cruise lines .

The itinerary would have two roundtrip embarkation options: Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 5, 2026, or Los Angeles 16 days later.

From there, the 2,000-guest Coral Princess would sail more than 35,000 nautical miles to ports in North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Central and South America.

It wouldn't be Princess' longest voyage — that title goes to its 116-day world cruise in 2025 — but it would be one of its most destination-heavy.

While two days longer, next year's around-the-world cruise would hit six fewer ports and four fewer countries than its 2026 counterpart.

According to the itinerary, about half of the 2026 voyage consists of sea days.

That's a lot of time on the water with no land in sight. Luckily, travelers can keep themselves entertained by attending lectures and programs related to the destinations, leisuring around the adult-only lounge, or taking a dip in Coral Princess' four pools.

The 21-year-old ship also has 10 places to grab a bite, although the Italian and steakhouse restaurants are considered specialty. Premier is the cruise line's most inclusive package, but it only includes 16 free dinners at these upcharge restaurants, paced once a week.

Princess is still a mass-market cruise line, after all.

The company has been increasingly dangling its inclusive package as a big perk.

air cruise around the world

The company says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US in October with its first-ever Sanctuary Collection . Travelers who splurge on these expensive and luxurious accommodations would be rewarded with two major benefits: a private lounge and Princess Premier.

A mother has shared details of the terrifying ordeal that saw her dangerously ill 12-year-old son airlifted from a cruise ship by the US Air Force .

Angela Bridges’ son Aiden fell ill on the Carnival Venezia cruise ship around 400 miles off the North Carolina coast with a perforated bowel.

Medics on board did what they could but the crew declared a critical medical incident and the US Air Force was called in, with the helicopter arriving “within hours” to take him to a hospital.

“I was just screaming and crying over the helicopter blades,” Ms Bridges told Good Morning America (GMA) on Thursday. “It was very scary.”

She added: “I feel so much gratitude, gratefulness, toward all the people that have been integral to my son’s recovery. It’s not just the Coast Guard, or the Air Force or the doctors or the nurses, it’s all of those people.”

The family were on their way back to New York from the Caribbean, when Aiden fell seriously ill on 4 May.

His mother told GMA that medics carried out an x-ray to work out what was wrong with him.

“They did that and she said ‘it looks as though he has a perforation in his bowel,’” Ms Bridges explained. “She said ‘basically the next thing that we need to do, immediately, is get him off the ship.’”

Two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and two HC-130J Combat King 11 planes took off from Patrick Space Force Base in Florida.

The mission required three intricate helicopter air-to-air refuellings since the ship was so far out at sea.Aiden received life-saving treatment on board the helicopter, his mother said, before being taken to a hospital in North Carolina.

His condition is currently unknown.

“Everyone in the wing mobilised with exceptional speed. By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams,” rescue pilot Captain Dylan Gann said.

The helicopters flew a total of 1,200 miles throughout the operation, while the ship adjusted its course in order to meet the aircraft.

“The amazing thing about this rescue is actually how smooth it went. We went from zero notification, to having aircraft ready, to having aircraft in the air,” Lieutenant Colonel Dave Underwood told ABC News.“And the young man is in the hospital in just a matter of hours.”

The cruise liner arrived in New York City as scheduled on Monday.

Two young-middle-aged white people in dark blue jumpsuits with white piping smiling broadly in obvious wind in front of a low white plane.

Dick Rutan, co-pilot of historic round-the-world flight, dies aged 85

Rutan, known for smooth flying style, survived having to eject twice from planes and being stranded at north pole

Burt Rutan was alarmed to see that the plane he had designed was so loaded with fuel that the wingtips dragged along the ground as it taxied down the runway. He grabbed the radio to warn the pilot, his older brother Dick Rutan. But Dick never heard the message.

Nine days and three minutes later, Dick, along with co-pilot Jeana Yeager, completed one of the greatest milestones in aviation history: the first round-the-world flight with no stops or refueling.

A decorated Vietnam war pilot, Dick Rutan died Friday evening at a hospital in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with Burt and other loved ones by his side. He was 85. His friend Bill Whittle said he died on his own terms when he decided against enduring a second night on oxygen after suffering a severe lung infection.

“He played an airplane like someone plays a grand piano,” said Burt of his brother, who was often described as having a velvet arm because of his smooth flying style.

Burt Rutan said he had always loved designing airplanes and became fascinated with the idea of a craft that could go clear around the world. His brother was equally passionate about flying. The project took six years.

There was plenty to worry Burt during testing of the light graphite plane, Voyager. There were mechanical failures, any one of which would have been disastrous over a distant ocean. When fully laden, the plane couldn’t handle turbulence. And then there was the question of how the pilots could endure such a long flight on so little sleep. But Burt said his brother had an optimism about him that made them all believe.

“Dick never doubted whether my design would actually make it around, with still some gas in the tank,” Burt said.

Voyager left from Edwards air force base in California just after 8am on 14 December 1986. Burt said that with all that fuel, the wings had only inches of clearance. Dick couldn’t see when they started dragging on the runway. But at the moment Burt called on the radio, co-pilot Yeager gave a speed report, drowning out the message.

An older man operates a battery-powered, handheld drill beneath the white wing of a biplane.

“And then, the velvet arm really came in,” Burt said. “And he very slowly brought the stick back and the wings bent way up, some 30 feet at the wingtips, and it lifted off very smoothly.”

They arrived back to a hero’s welcome as thousands gathered to witness the landing. Both Rutan brothers and Yeager were awarded Presidential Citizens medals by President Ronald Reagan, who described how a local official in Thailand at first “refused to believe some cockamamie story” about a plane flying around the world on a single tank of gas.

“We had the freedom to pursue a dream, and that’s important,” Dick Rutan said at the ceremony. “And we should never forget, and those that guard our freedoms, that we should hang on to them very tenaciously and be very careful about some do-gooder that thinks that our safety is more important than our freedom. Because freedom is awful difficult to obtain, and it’s even more difficult to regain it once it’s lost.”

Richard Glenn Rutan was born in Loma Linda, California. He joined the US air force as a teenager and flew more than 300 combat missions during the Vietnam war.

He was part of an elite group that would loiter above enemy anti-aircraft positions for hours at a time. The missions had the call sign “Misty” and Dick was known as “Misty Four-Zero”. Among the many awards he received were the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

He survived having to eject twice from planes, once when his F-100 Super Sabre was hit by enemy fire over Vietnam, and a second time when he was stationed in England and the same type of plane had a mechanical failure. He retired from the air force with the rank of lieutenant colonel and went on to work as a test pilot.

Burt Rutan said his brother was always having adventures, like the time he got stranded at the north pole for a couple of days when the Russian biplane he was in landed and then sank through the ice.

Dick Rutan set another record in 2005 when he flew about 10 miles (16km) in a rocket-powered plane launched from the ground in Mojave, California. It was also the first time US mail had been carried by a such a plane.

Greg Morris, the president of Scaled Composites, a company founded by Burt Rutan, said he first met Dick was when he was about seven and over the years always found him generous and welcoming.

“Bigger than life, in every sense of the word,” Morris said, listing off Rutan’s legacy in the Vietnam war, testing planes and flying the Voyager. “Any one of those contributions would make a legend in aviation. All of them together, in one person, is just inconceivable.”

Whittle said Rutan had been courageous in his final hours at the hospital – sharp as a tack, calm and joking with them about what might come next after death.

“He’s the greatest pilot that’s ever lived,” Whittle said.

Dick Rutan is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kris Rutan; daughters Holly Hogan and Jill Hoffman; and grandchildren Jack, Sean, Noelle and Haley.
