Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters review

Our verdict.

A Trojan horse for EAs subscription golf game, this is an insulting and sickening grab at PC gamers wallets.

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

The game loads up and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters informs me that I can now purchase Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters. Is this Inception-like advertising an evil way of getting confused customers to buy infinite copies, or just endemic of the laziness behind EA's latest golf-sim update?

It's a bit of both. This is an offline version of EA's Tiger Woods Online game, built using the browserfriendly Unity engine, which enables players to compete in the Masters tournament and exhibition matches without the fear of slicing it in front of people. But it still hooks into the subscription based-Tiger Woods Online, and I don't think I've ever played a clumsier attempt to integrate offline and online.

I was contentedly chipping my way to a par in a Master's game (the golf is still decent, if unchanged since TGO launched in 2010) when I was warned I had ten minutes to save or lose my progress. I ignored it, assuming it was a general message to the entire server, as I was playing offline. The same pop-up appeared at five and two minutes before stopping the game and kicking me back to the desktop. When I tried to return to my offline game it wouldn't allow me access.

When Tour 12 did grudgingly allow reconnection, I poked around online and discovered something sickening: this game doesn't even have a dedicated online mode. It has a three month's membership to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, after which you'll have to pay either £3 a month or £25 per year. That's on top of the £30 this glorified demo costs in the first place.

Yet without that membership you'll feel hard done by. Even if it is ugly, easy to play, and attempting to drain your wallet every second, at least there are a good number of online competitions to triple-click your way through. Are they worth the subscription cost? Don't be silly: this is golf. Actually, this is old golf: an old game, repackaged without a good going-over by the greenskeepers. Ratty, tattered, and begging for money from the first time it loads up. They're selling you half a round and charging you more when you get to the ninth.

tiger woods pga tour pc

There might be a good model for a subscription-based golf game out there, but even when this was free-to- play the cost was too high. Now that it's saddled with a pricetag, the bare minimum of polish and one new course, I'm not even sure just telling you to avoid it is enough. As it stands, EA are already giving refunds to people who feel ripped off by what they bought.

The publishers hoped to use the connectivity of the PC to fill their pockets, but in the end it was that connectivity that brought forums and websites together to demand they do better. I can only get behind those dissatisfied customers.

Don't let EA get away with this. Don't buy it, and tell them this isn't good enough.

The definitive ranking of every Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2004-2.png

Last August, the newest golf video game—PGA Tour 2K21—was released to the public, quickly becoming a hit among golf fans. While there had been a number of golf games released since the final iteration of the Tiger Woods video game series (in 2014), this was the first one that felt like a must-have, even without Woods' name on the box.

Seven months later, it was announced that Woods will in fact be back on the box. The 15-time major champion has inked a long-term deal with 2K , meaning he'll be returning to a console near you in the future. Rejoice, Cyber Tiger is back.

Of course, this news comes not long after Woods was in a single-car accident, one that has had him hospitalized ever since. Hopefully, Woods makes a full recovery and returns to the real course.

In the mean time, fans might get to relive their Tiger Woods glory days with Woods on an Xbox or Playstation again soon. That got us feeling nostalgic, so naturally we ranked all 16 iterations of the Tiger Woods franchise.

2006 was a very weird year for all the EA Sports games. It was basically a lame duck year, as Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were now the systems to have. That left ’ 06 games in limbo for PS2 owners. Essentially, they were the same game as the year before with a couple of dumb, shiny new features. This was definitely the case for the “Tiger Woods” series as well. ’ 06 was as forgettable as they come.

Not all that different from 1999, which we’ll get to in a bit.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2002.png

The first year of the analog stick swing. Literally changed the game.

Honestly, 2003 was great, but what came after it makes its existence almost irrelevant.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2011.png

One of the big selling points for 2011 was the Ryder Cup mode, which flat out stunk. If you’re going to introduce an event like that into the game, one people hold very near and dear to their hearts, you’ve got to do it right. Funny enough, they introduced a pretty big event in the 2012 version of the game and nailed it.

This is purely out of respect for the franchise. Back to where it all began. Graphics? Terrible. Gameplay? Pretty good for PS1 in 1999! After years and years of playing with the analog stick, I can’t imagine playing a golf game where you had to time a meter like you’re kicking a field goal in Madden, but that’s the way it was. Kinda cool that it was exactly Tiger’s swing, but it didn’t feel like you were controlling him. Like I said, this is out of respect. By the way, something I just learned in doing research for this ranking was that there was an “Easter Egg” in the first 100,000 pressings of the game that played “Jesus vs. Santa,” a lost episode of South Park, which is on YouTube . I’m not kidding.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2001.png

The first “Tiger Woods” to be on PS2 had strong graphics and looked much more like the video games of today, as opposed to the Golden Tee-esque versions of 1999 and 2000. But this game still had the whack swing meter.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2009.png

I think the only thing separating ’ 09 from ’ 08 was Hank Haney being your coach in the game. The hell was that about?

Might as well just lump 2008 and 2009 together. Kind of forgotten years in the series in my opinion. The big jump on the new systems came in 2010. Although, none of the newest games have the Jesus shot:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2007.png

This year was a massive step forward for the game in graphics and presentation, which makes sense given it was on the new systems. The real fun, however, was on the PS2 version, which I still own. There was a great team mode and some fun fantasy courses (I believe there was a course in Central Park in this game). But the best part was the addition of Riviera, a course I must have played a thousand times in that game. I guess that means I was “woke” before “woke” even existed, which is an elite level of woke-ness.

2010 was a hit for many reasons, and I think the Nintendo Wii version was the most popular of the bunch this year. But I had it for Xbox 360 and it was just delightful. First off, it was perhaps the best cover of the series, featuring Tiger’s famous, double-fisted U.S. Open celebration at Torrey Pines. That was a particularly nice touch because this was also the first year the U.S. Open was in the game, which coincided with the year it was back at Pebble Beach. Most importantly, this was Anthony Kim’s video-game debut, which was such a monumental occasion that there’s video of Tiger talking up Kim in one of the game ’ s trailers. This was probably the first time in the game’s history that I popped in the disc for the first time and played with someone other than Tiger, that someone being Kim.

Considering it wasn’t all that different from ’ 12, ’ 13 probably shouldn’t be this high, but sometimes more of the same is good. ’ 13 continued to focus on Augusta/The Masters, and the collector’s edition of the game even had a green-jacket ceremony. The two best additions to the game were Rory McIlroy, who was somehow left out of 2012 after being in 2010 and 2011, and Dustin Johnson. They both returned in ’ 13 and ’ 14 and were easily the second- and third-best players in the game behind TW. ’ 13 was the last year of Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who were each staples in the franchise for years. Course-wise, ’ 13 also made some great adds in Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Crooked Stick and PGA National.

Some may be scoffing at this being No. 4, which is fair. The first year of Augusta National and a “ Road to the Masters ” career mode in a video game should be worthy of No. 1, but the game only got better in its final two installments. With the introduction of Augusta also came the familiar voice of Jim Nantz, which no one complained about. ’ 12 also featured “The Caddie Experience,” which was cool for all of the first 10 minutes until it became redundant. New golfers included Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, the Molinari brothers, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. Sadly, this was the final year of Anthony Kim in the series. Pour one out, folks.

While the year we still haven’t gotten to is the game’s peak, 2005 is actually my favorite year of “Tiger Woods.” Gameplay was similar to the previous year, but there were welcome additions like the ability to adjust your stance/ball position to hit it higher or lower, and the ability to hit a punch and flop shot as well as chips and pitches. Putting was the same, with the same caddie advice and a back and through stroke once you read the putt, but this was the first year of “Tiger Vision,” which you got to use a handful of times per round with the use of the R1 button. By holding it down, your player would zoom in via a narrow cone (just like Tiger!) and see exactly where to aim the putt, turning a sure three-putt into a 76-foot eagle conversion.

Where this game separated itself was the legend mode, which allowed you to unlock Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and, of course, “Sunday” Tiger Woods. Trying to unlock all those greats, a sick soundtrack, and new courses like Harbour Town, Colonial, Sherwood, Greek Isles (fantasy course) and, my personal favorite, Couer d’Alene, where I once shot 48 with “Sunday” Tiger and … lost to a buddy of mine who shot 46 with Hogan, had me glued to this game for hours on end.

The last “Tiger Woods” game was, in my opinion, the best of the Xbox 360 era, though I won’t fault any ’ 12 or ’ 13 truthers for wanting those higher on this list. All three had Augusta National, which is enough to put them all in a tie for second, but ’ 14, the historic edition specifically, just did it for me. You could play Augusta National in 1934, reverse routing and all. New courses included Muirfield Village, Royal Troon and Oak Hill. In a brilliant nostalgia play, the game also brought back unlockable legends: Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sam Snead. There were even different versions of them, like an early 1960s version Jack Nicklaus and a late 1970s Jack Nicklaus, and you could compete as all of them or against them in reenactments of their greatest career moments. The game’s best feature, however, was having all four major championships in career mode. Much like Michael Strahan, the “Tiger Woods” video game went out on top with the ’ 14 version.

I could just write “DMX. That is all” and drop the mic, but that wouldn’t fully describe this game’s GOATness. Everything about it was perfect right from the “Up in here” opening montage. There were 20 courses, the most in a Tiger Woods game to that point, including new additions like Bethpage Black and Sahalee, as well six fantasy courses (Black Rock Cove was a personal fave). 2004 also featured “Game Face,” which allowed you to create your player’s face to your exact liking, wrinkles and all. The gameplay wasn’t all that different from 2003, but it didn’t need to be. Once the analog stick was introduced, the gameplay was pretty much perfect in the PS2 era. But 2004 was its peak.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Review

There's very little that's truly new in Tiger Woods 07, but it's still a very good game.

By Aaron Thomas on October 13, 2006 at 6:19PM PDT

With companies focusing their energy and resources on next-gen consoles rather than on the current generation of systems, there hasn't been a whole lot to look forward to with this year's crop of sports games. Rather than add radical new gameplay ideas or revamped visuals, developers seem to be content to simply toss in a few new minigames or subtle control changes, and then send their games off to the factory. Such is the case with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. It has more courses, golfers, and play modes than last year, but ultimately, little has changed.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is just as enjoyable as 06, which was just as enjoyable as 05, which was just as enjoyable as...

There's certainly no shortage of ways to occupy yourself with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. You can select from a number of different match and scoring modes, including stroke play, match play, skins, practice, stableford, alternate shot, best-ball, and four-ball. New this year are bloodsome and greensome matches, both of which are team-based best-ball events. After you and your teammate hit your shots in greensome, you get to pick which ball you're going to play; in bloodsome, your opponent will choose which lie you'll use. One-ball is another new game, where you and your opponent share the same ball and alternate shots. The strategy in one-ball lies in trying to set your opponent up with difficult shots so that you're the one left with a makeable putt. If you're the one who drains the putt, you win the hole. Before each shot, a large blue ring that represents the target area appears on the course. This is the area in which your shot must land, or else it's a "betrayal," and you'll lose a turn. For example, on a par four you may be able to put the ball on the green with your second shot, but that will leave your opponent with a putt--and that's not good. You can, however, shoot the ball into a sand trap that surrounds the green, thereby forcing your opponent to be the one who has to put the ball on the green. This play mode is great for learning how to recover from bad shots, but it can be frustrating to play against the tenacious CPU and is best played against another person.

Most of the new events this year are designed around multiplayer play, though you can play most of them against the CPU in team tour. Team tour replaces last year's ridiculous time traveling rivals mode. Now, rather than going back through time to play golf, you'll travel the world, taking on fictitious golfers and PGA professionals. As the name implies, team tour revolves around team play and not just the exploits of your created golfer. As you win events in team tour, you're able to add vanquished foes to your team and replace less talented team members with better golfers. You can upgrade your teammates' abilities after wins, though you lose all upgrades if you drop the person from your squad. This is also the best place to upgrade your golfer before heading out on tour.

If your interests lie in more traditional golf, the PGA Tour season offers plenty of challenge in its 29 multiday events. If you like to jump right into a game, never coming up for air until you've either beaten or grown tired of it, the real-time event calendar will help you pace yourself. These challenges open up in real-time and range from chipping contests to skins play and are a great way to beef up your character if you have only a few minutes to play.

If you grow tired of playing solo, you can head online for a greater challenge. There are daily tournaments, ranked and unranked rounds, as well as alternate game modes, such as best ball, battle golf, three-hole minigolf, skins, one-ball, four-ball, and alternate shot. For the most part, everything ran smoothly when playing online, but it took a little while to get used to it because the swing was slower. The only problem we encountered was on the Xbox, where chips and putts that clearly didn't go in the hole were counted as if they had. There's a small amount of ESPN integration, but it's limited to a ticker that runs across the bottom of the screen, short text news stories, and brief ESPN Radio SportsCenter updates every 20 minutes. Unlike in NBA Live, where you could hear updates and view the ticker while playing offline games, these features are available only if you're in an online lobby.

Creating your own golfer is still one of the game's highlights.

The thing that makes these game modes so addictive year in and year out is the ability to create a golfer and make him the greatest golfer on the planet. Tiger's unrivaled character creation mode is back and is as deep as ever. There are subtle changes to the process this year, but by and large, it's the same as in Tiger Woods 06. If realism's what you want, it's a breeze to create a golfer in your spitting image, and you're limited only by your imagination when it comes to making zany, off-the-wall characters. Should you grow tired of your golfer's appearance, you can go back and change it at any time, or simply purchase the brown paper bag from the pro shop and stick it on his noggin. You can also customize your player's swing, making it as smooth or as ugly as you like. After completing a round or challenge, you're given points for individual attributes, based on your performance. These points can then be used to upgrade your golfer's power, accuracy, putting, short game, luck, and more. You'll also earn money for your wins, which allows you to purchase new clothes and equipment. As was the case last year, you can outfit your gear and clothing with equipment modifiers, giving your stats a slight boost. Once again, there's no course designer--still a glaring omission after all these years. You can put together your "dream course," using holes from any of the 21 courses in the game, but this doesn't make up for not having a true course editor.

If you just want to stick to the pros, there are 21 professional golfers (and 50 total) in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. The list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, Stuart Appleby, John Daly, Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, and Mike Weir, among others. For the first time, there are two LPGA golfers to pick from--Natalie Gulbis and Annika Sorenstam. Also numbering 21 is the number of courses, both real and fantasy, in the game. A number of courses return from last year, but there are some noteworthy additions--Aviara, Riviera, The National, The K Club, and the ocean course at Kiawah Island.

All of the golfers look fantastic.

As for how the game plays--it's as enjoyable as ever, but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between Tiger Woods 06 and Tiger Woods 07. In fact, it can best be described as a mix between the 05 and 06 releases because you can now use the swing and putting mechanics from either year. Swinging your club uses the tried-and-true method of pulling down and then pushing up on the left analog stick. With the standard control scheme, you can add a draw or a fade by moving the left analog stick down at an angle during your swing. The alternate swing controls take advantage of both analog sticks by requiring you to push the right analog stick left to add a draw or fade, but you still perform your swing with the left stick. Both methods work equally well, but it's nice to have the option of an alternate scheme if last year's didn't jive with you. The standard control scheme for putting works just as it did last year. An overlay is placed on the green, and you'll need to read the slope by how fast the white dots move along the grid. The ideal putt-cam that shows you the ideal putting line is back, though it appears to be facing downward a bit more this year, making it more difficult to "cheese" by lining up your putt with objects in the background. The alternate putt method is similar to Tiger Woods 05. You're shown the path the ball would travel if you hit it without any adjustments. Your caddy will give you precise directions for how far to the left or right you need to aim and how much power you'll need to use. You can also use the ideal putt-cam here, but it doesn't show your best line when zooming toward the hole. As is the case with the swing controls, both putting methods work just fine. The clumsily implemented gamebreakers from last year are thankfully nowhere to be found.

With fans of the series pouring so much time into each Tiger Woods release, cries for a more challenging experience grow louder every year. Reactive Tiger proofing that made courses more challenging on the fly, based on your performance, is no longer in the game--instead it's up to you to challenge yourself. A host of sliders are available for you to tailor the game exactly as you like. You can change the swing difficulty, the speed and hardness of the greens and fairways, the length of the rough, wind strength, and AI skill levels, and you can even turn off visual aids, such as club distance, wind and lie indicators, and the swing aid. If you're looking for a more realistic experience, you can disable spin, power boost, and the putting aids. Another way to make the game more challenging is to jump straight into the PGA Tour, rather than powering up your golfer in team tour or real-time event challenges.

It's difficult to point out exactly how--but the game looks slightly better this year. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions both hold their own, with the Xbox looking slightly better thanks to 480p support. Both the created characters and the professional golfers look fantastic. The golfers each have a unique swing, which makes them not only look different but also play different. The team tour mode is a great way to experience this because you're often playing with as many as four different golfers in one round. Courses also look better than ever. Vibrant colors, crisp visuals, and little touches, such as flocks of birds flying over the green or waves breaking along the shore, make each course beautiful. From a technical standpoint, the frame rate remains steady and the camera is rarely a problem.

Team tour replaces last year's rivals mode.

Most of the audio in Tiger Woods 07 sounds good--or as good as can be expected from a golf game. The crowds are lively and react with enthusiasm to a great shot. Just like on TV, you can hear individual fans in the gallery shout out things like "I love this game!" and just like on TV, this quickly gets old. David Feherty and Gary McCord are back and seemingly have nothing new to say. The commentary plays it too straight in a game that's otherwise full of personality. Their negative comments appear to have been toned down a bit, but the duo still drinks "Haterade" and just loves to rub it in after a poor shot. For the most part, their observations are accurate, though they'll occasionally praise you for hitting the ball in the rough and chastise you for what ends up being a perfectly good shot. Should you choose to forgo the announcers, there are lots of ambient noises to listen to instead. You'll hear birds chirping, planes flying overhead, animals roaring in the jungle (on the Predator course), and on Pebble Beach, the sea crashing into the cliffs. The Xbox version does not support custom soundtracks, which is disappointing because the included soundtrack is nothing to write home about.

Tiger Woods 07 is a heck of game, but it's so similar to last year's version that the question "Does this game really need to be a yearly release?" should be asked. You get a few new golfers and courses, as well as a few more control and difficulty options, but the whole package is roughly the equivalent of an expansion disc. If you own Tiger Woods 06, there's little reason to pick up Tiger Woods 07, unless you're just dying for new content, minimal as it may be. That said, if you've never played a Tiger Woods game before, or you've been away from the series for a few years, Tiger Woods 07 is well worth a purchase.

  • Leave Blank
  • Lots of great courses
  • best create-a-character around
  • gameplay is as enjoyable as ever
  • plenty of licensed golfers
  • Not a whole lot different from 06
  • some menus are needlessly abstruse
  • David Feherty and Gary McCord have worn out their welcome

PGA Tour creates sponsor exemption for Tiger Woods, cites 'exceptional lifetime achievement'

The PGA Tour has created a special sponsor exemption for 15-time major champion Tiger Woods -- and Woods alone -- based on his "exceptional lifetime achievement," the tour told its members in a memo Tuesday night.

The sponsor exemption would be available for Woods to compete in the eight signature events, which feature limited fields, increased prize money and FedEx Cup points.

Woods, an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, wouldn't otherwise qualify for the signature events with $20 million purses because he isn't playing enough competitive golf after returning to the tour from serious injuries suffered in a car wreck in February 2021.

The PGA Tour policy board approved the special sponsor exemption during a joint meeting with the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors on Tuesday in Hartford, Connecticut.

In the memo, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, the tour told its members, "An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins."

This season, the eight signature events were The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship.

In the memo, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the policy board was considering implementing a 36-hole cut in each of the signature events -- only the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial currently do. The board took no action and will continue discussing the topic.

The tour said it would also develop an alternate list that would ensure that each of the signature events had a field of 72 players. The Travelers Championship has only 71 players after Rory McIroy withdrew Monday .

Woods, 48, has competed in only nine official PGA Tour events the past three seasons since returning to action at the 2022 Masters. The only non-major event he has competed in is the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles, which he hosts and benefits his foundation.

Woods withdrew from the second round of the Genesis Invitational in February because of illness. He finished 60th at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship and last week's U.S. Open .

Woods said he planned to compete in next month's Open Championship, scheduled for July 18-21 at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.

When Woods was asked at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 on Friday if playing in more events might help him perform better in the majors, he didn't seem ready to play additional tournaments.

"I've only got one more tournament this season," Woods said. "Even if I win the British Open, I don't think I'll be in the [FedEx Cup] playoffs. Just one more event and then I'll come back whenever I come back."

In the memo, Monahan also gave members an update on the tour's negotiations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is considering a sizable investment in PGA Tour Enterprises. The PIF has funded the rival LIV Golf League the past three years.

Woods and other members of a transaction subcommittee met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and others in New York on June 7.

"As we've said in the past -- we can't negotiate in public -- but we are making progress," Monahan told the policy board, according to the memo. "Two weeks ago, members of our PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee met in New York with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of the PIF, as well as members of his team. During that meeting, we reached consensus on several items, but both parties recognize that there is still work to do to reach a final agreement.

"Our talks are ongoing, with the goal of developing a shared vision for the future of professional golf that is pro-competitive and provides players with the best global opportunities."

PGA Tour Honors The Greatness Of Tiger Woods With New Rule Giving Him Lifetime Exemption To Certain Events

T here isn’t a single golfer alive today who’s had a greater impact on the game than Tiger Woods, and the PGA Tour is honoring his legendary status with a new measure that ensures he’ll have a spot reserved for him in certain tournaments for the rest of his life.

It’s safe to assume Tiger Woods wants to secure one more win on the PGA Tour when you consider he’s currently tied with Sam Snead for the most victories of all time with 82. He’s certainly facing an uphill battle in his quest for another based on the health issues that continue to hamper his game, but history has taught us you should never count him out.

The organization is forever indebted to a man who turned the golf world on its head after he joined it in 1996, and while it’s literally repaid him (and other influential golfers) with the help of the Player Impact Program that was introduced in 2021, it’s now gone out of its way to introduce a new rule that was essentially created just for him.

According to ESPN , the PGA Tour policy board approved a measure that went up for a vote on Monday giving any golfer with 80 victories on the circuit a lifetime exemption to its eight signature events, which feature a more competitive field along with a higher purse and more FedEx Cup points up for grabs.

If you’re curious, Woods and Snead are the only players in PGA Tour history to surpass the 80-victory threshold (Jack Nicklaus is in third place on the all-time list with 73). To put that in perspective, Rory McIlroy is currently the wins leader among active golfers not named “Tiger Woods” with a grand total of…26.

We’ll have to wait and see if Woods decides to take advantage of those exemptions based on the fairly minimal workload he’s shouldered as he continues to deal with the lingering effects of the car accident he was involved in a few years ago, but this is nonetheless a very well-earned honor.

EA SPORTS Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® 13 at a Glance

Between the EA SPORTS Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® 13 demo and watching Tiger himself regain his place in the winner’s circle after 924 days and 108 tournaments, we’re ready to play some golf. But not outside, it’s still freezing here, on our consoles obviously.

For everyone who’s picking up their own copy of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 this week, we’ve got all the information you need to jump straight in and start playing. Of course there are new golfers and courses included in this year’s game, but those aren’t the only changes you need to know about.

You can’t play like Tiger unless you understand the new Total Swing Control. We had Tiger in the studio working with our dev team to make sure the swing mechanic was as true to life as possible. This change represents the biggest leap forward in this system in the last 10 years.

Things you need to know about the new Total Swing Control:

Swing Tempo – For the first time in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR history the tempo and speed of your swing is going to directly influence the power of your shot. Fast tempo will add more distance while a slower tempo will add less.

Shot Setup – Create all possible shot types from one shot setup. Drag your aiming marker forward and back to blend between full, ¾, pitch and chip shots. Create draw and fade shots by opening and closing your golfer’s stance. Affect the launch trajectory by moving the ball forward and back in your stance to create flop and punch shots. With 62 million creatable shots, if you can do it on the green, you can do it in the game.

Strike Meter – Using the all-new Strike Meter, place the sweet spot of the club precisely where you wish to hit the ball. While a center strike is most common, you can use low and high strikes to alter power, spin and trajectory.

Swing Arc – The visualisation of the golfer’s swing is shown in the form of an arc. Use this arc as a guide to execute your swing with the proper power, trajectory and shot shape.

All-New Animations – Utilising the latest versions of EA’s sophisticated ANT animation system, you’ll be able to see in real-time whether your golf swing is on or off plane through your golfer’s on-screen animations.

After you’ve mastered the new Total Swing Control it’s time to get online and create or join a Country Club. In the all-new Country Clubs you can earn Status Points and Coins faster for exclusive access to downloadable courses and Boost Pin packs – equip Boost Pins to your golfer’s bag tag to give them extra perks and power-ups. You can team up with friends to create a Country Club of your own or join an already existing club. Once in, you’ll have team and individual objectives to complete, Status leaderboards – with the winner getting a major Coin bonus, and the daily loyalty bonus award. Check out the video for even more ways to earn Status and Coins with Online Country Clubs.

Check back here tomorrow for a walkthrough on the new Legacy Mode. That should be plenty of time to master Total Swing Control and join an Online Country Club.

Tiger Woods granted lifetime entry to PGA Tour’s future signature events

PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA - JUNE 14: Tiger Woods reacts to his shot as he walks off the 17th hole tee during the second round of the U.S. Open on the No. 2 Course at Pinehurst Resort on June 14, 2024, in Pinehurst, North Carolina. (Photo by Keyur Khamar/PGA TOUR via Getty Images)

Tiger Woods has been awarded a lifetime exemption by the PGA Tour to enter all of its future signature events, beginning next year.

The PGA Tour policy board has decided to establish an additional signature events sponsor exemption specifically to honor Woods’ achievement of surpassing 80 career wins.

This special privilege grants Woods the opportunity to compete in all eight prestigious tournaments on tour for the remainder of his career, which do not include majors.

Woods, 48, has won 82 PGA Tour titles, including 15 majors, but has had a limited schedule in recent years due to various injuries.

“Among his 82 career wins, Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard eight times and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday five times. Both are Signature Events,” a PGA Tour memo added.

Tiger Woods is back. Only the future of golf is at stake

Since his car crash in February 2021, which necessitated surgery due to serious leg injuries, Woods has competed in only nine tournaments.

The American shares the record for most overall victories on the tour with Sam Snead, and his 15 major wins rank second all-time behind Jack Nicklaus, who won 18.

In his four outings in PGA competitions this year, Woods withdrew during the Genesis Invitational due to illness, finished last among those who made the cut at the Masters, and subsequently missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.

Last week, Woods was questioned about whether the latest U.S. Open would be his last appearance at the tournament.

“As far as my last Open Championship or U.S. Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be,” he said.

“I thought I played well enough to be up there in contention. It just didn’t work out.”

The Open Championship in Scotland next month will be Woods’ final event of the season.
