Doing the Time Warp Again: 10 Mind-Bending Time Travel Horror Movies

' src=

Happy Death Day took a fun Groundhog Day style approach to the slasher, with a star-making performance by Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman, the mean college coed turned final girl after being murdered repeatedly by a masked killer. Writer/Director Christopher Landon expanded Tree’s world and the temporal paradox concept in the sequel, shifting away from the slasher elements to bring something completely different while setting up potential for a bonkers sequel. With Happy Death Day 2U recently released on Blu-ray, it seems like a perfect time to celebrate by revisiting other horror movies that have explored the twisty, mind-bending nature of time travel. Whether it be loops, or simply moving backwards and forwards through time in dizzying fashion, these 10 horror movies will have you doing the time warp again.

Insidious: Chapter 2

time travel horror movie

Insidious may have introduced us to the haunting purgatory known as The Further via astral projection, but leave it to screenwriter Leigh Whannell and director James Wan to up the ante in a big way by introducing a time loop for the sequel. Picking up after the events of the first film, which ended with strong astral projector John Lambert (Patrick Wilson) trapped in the Further while his body is possessed by the Bride in Black, the sequel becomes a complex web of time travel with adult Josh and young Josh overlapping in time to assist each other and their loved ones in the fight to restore present day Josh to his own body.

From director Vincenzo Natali ( Cube , Splice ), Haunter brings a refreshing twist to a haunted house thriller by way of time loop. Abigail Breslin stars as Lisa, a teen who slowly comes to realize that she’s a ghost stuck reliving the day she was murdered in 1985 along with her family, on perpetual loop. Lisa also discovers that she can bend time to communicate with people in other timelines, eventually working with a teen currently living in her home to prevent the same killer from murdering again. And hopefully breaking the cycle. Look for the always magnetic Stephen McHattie as Pale Man, a mysterious ghost that tries to warn Lisa away from tampering with time too much.

The House at the End of Time

time travel horror movie

Dulce is happily married and the mother of two sons; a perfect life interrupted by spooky paranormal occurrences in their home. One night her family is attacked by an unseen foe inside the home, leaving her husband dead and her son Leopoldo missing. Dulce is arrested and convicted once her fingerprints are discovered on the murder weapon. Cut to 30 years later, she’s released from prison under the requirement that the rest of her sentence be carried out via house arrest- the same home where tragedy occurred. The paranormal activity begins anew, only this time the older Dulce learns it’s not ghosts, but time travel that’s behind it all. The House at the End of Time takes the familiar trappings of a haunted house tale and injects a heartbreaking story of familial love and tragedy by way of time travel.

time travel horror movie

A dinner party goes awry when a comet passes overhead, causing strange occurrences and anomalies. Or rather, the dinner party guests find themselves stuck in a sort of temporal nightmare. The guests discover parallel realities overlapping with their own, causing an unsettling mix of quantum physics and interpersonal dynamics. Coherence is a creepy Twilight Zone-style  tale of doppelgangers via claustrophobic paranoia on a micro-budget.

time travel horror movie

Writer/director Nacho Vigalondo’s first feature film is a twisty sci-fi horror time travel story that sees its lead, Hector, stuck in a time loop following an attack by man covered in bloodied bandages. Those that are a stickler for time travel logic and characters whose decisions compound their own misfortune might be frustrated, but  Timecrimes  is a creative, fun face-paced romp in suspense. The more Hector continues his time loop, the deadlier things get. What starts as a slasher evolves into something completely different.

The Butterfly Effect

time travel horror movie

Evan Treborn discovers that when he reads his journals from adolescence, he can travel back in time to redo pieces of his life. But as the film’s title suggests, Evan learns that making small changes in the past can lead to catastrophic consequences in the present. The more Evan tries to undo mistakes or fix tragic moments from his friends’ pasts, the worse things tend to get. A great example of the horrors that await in wielding the ability to alter time, this thriller explores the brutal side of Chaos Theory.

Waxwork II: Lost in Time

time travel horror movie

Proving not all time travel horror movies have to be cerebral and dark, this fun sequel bypasses the demise of the Waxwork museum in the first film by introducing time travel. In this outing, plucky heroes Mark and Sarah travel through various horror-filled dimensions with a compass that allows them to navigate through time and space. Literally. But it comes with a bit of a learning curve. There’s Alien homages, nods to The Haunting (in comical black and white, with a Bruce Campbell appearance to boot), Invasion of the Body Snatchers , Frankenstein , and so many more.

The Endless

Aaron Moorhead as Aaron and Justin Benson as Justin in THE ENDLESS. Photographer: William Tanner Sampson.

The latest by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead sees them star as a pair of brothers returning to the cult they fled from years ago when an old videotape resurfaces. It may have been a decade since they left, but they discover the cult members haven’t aged a single day. The cult, Camp Arcadia, resides on a strange plot of land filled with various time loop pockets, presenting a very unique, meditative story of cosmic horror and coming to terms with the past. For these brothers, Camp Arcadia presents a mind-bending space that allows them to confront both their bizarre upbringing and their current place in the world, in all its existential intricacies.

time travel horror movie

In this sci-fi horror movie, a ship of 60,000 people embarks on a 123-year trip to colonize an Earth-like planet; the passengers remain in hypersleep while the crew rotates out of hypersleep every two years to maintain the ship. But when two crew members, Corporal Bower and Lieutenant Payton, awaken improperly from hypersleep, they discover that they might be suffering from a space psychosis, and weird cannibalistic humanoids have overrun the ship. With a 123-year trip into deep space, a lot can go wrong, and the passage of time factors into Pandorum in a major way in this fun creature feature.

time travel horror movie

Director Christopher Smith ( Black Death ,  Severance ) delivered one of the most mind-bending horror films in  Triangle . Melissa George stars as Jess, a woman desperate for a break from her autistic son so she agrees to join a friend for a day on a yacht. A storm leaves them stranded until an ocean liner comes along, only it’s deserted. As the group finds themselves hunted by a masked killer on board, a serious case of Déjà vu sets in for Jess, and no one can effectively predict the turns the story takes from there. There are seriously twisted time loops involved in this one.

‘Heathers’ – 1980s Satire Is Sharper Than Ever 35 Years Later

' src=

“ When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be ”

The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch. 35 years later , those who enjoyed Heathers in its original run may have more in common with the story’s parents than its teens. That’s right, Lehmann’s Heathers is now old enough to worry about its kids.

Veronica Sawyer ( Winona Ryder ) is the newest member of Westerberg High’s most popular clique. Heather Chandler ( Kim Walker ), sits atop this extreme social hierarchy ruling her minions and classmates alike with callous cruelty and massive shoulder pads. When Veronica begins dating a mysterious new student nicknamed J.D. ( Christian Slater ), they bond over hatred for her horrendous “friends.” After a vicious fight, a prank designed to knock Heather off her high horse goes terribly wrong and the icy mean girl winds up dead on her bedroom floor. Veronica and J.D. frantically stage a suicide, unwittingly making Heather more popular than ever. But who will step in to fill her patent leather shoes? With an ill-conceived plan to reset the social order, has Veronica created an even more dangerous monster?

Heathers debuted near the end of an era. John Hughes ruled ’80s teen cinema with instant classics like Sixteen Candles , The Breakfast Club , and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off while the Brat Pack dominated headlines with devil-may-care antics and sexy vibes. The decade also saw the rise of the slasher; a formulaic subgenre in which students are picked off one by one. Heathers combines these two trends in a biting satire that challenges the feel-good conclusions of Hughes and his ilk. Rather than a relatable loser who wins a date with the handsome jock or a loveable misfit who stands up to a soulless principal, Lehmann’s film exists in a world of extremes. The popular kids are vapid monsters, the geeks are barely human, the outcasts are psychopaths, and the adults are laughably incompetent. Veronica and a select few of her classmates feel like human beings, but the rest are outsized archetypes designed to push the teen comedy genre to its outer limits.

time travel horror movie

Mean girls have existed in fiction ever since Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters tried to steal her man, but modern iterations arguably date back to Rizzo (Stockard Channing, Grease ) and Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen, Carrie ). It might destroy Heather Chandler to know that she isn’t the first, but this iconic mean girl may be the most extreme. She knows exactly what her classmates think of her and uses her power to make others suffer. She reminds Veronica, “They all want me as a friend or a fuck. I’m worshiped at Westerburg and I’m only a junior.” With an icy glare and barely concealed rage, she stomps the halls playing cruel pranks and demanding her friends submit to her will. We see a brief glimpse of humanity at a frat party when she’s coerced into a sexual act, but she immediately squanders this good will by promising to destroy Veronica at school on Monday. However, the film does not revolve around Heather’s redemption and it doesn’t revel in her ruination. Lehmann is more concerned with how Veronica uses her own popularity than the way she dispatches her best friend/enemy. In her book Unlikeable Female Characters: The Women Pop Culture Wants You to Hate , Anna Bogutskaya describes Heather Chandler as an evolution in female characterization and it’s refreshing to see a woman play such an unapologetic villain.

Heather Chandler may die in the film’s first act, but her legacy can still be felt in both film and TV. Shannen Doherty would go on to specialize in catty characters both onscreen and off while Walker’s performance inspired the 2004 comedy Mean Girls (directed by Mark Waters, brother of Heathers screenwriter Daniel Waters). Early seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek , Gossip Girl , and Pretty Little Liars all feature at least one glamorous bitch and mean girls can currently be seen battling on HBO’s Euphoria . Tina Fey’s Regina George (Rachel McAdams) sparked an important dialogue about female bullying and modern iterations add humanity to this contemptible character. With a rageful spit at her reflection in the mirror, Walker’s Heather hints at a deep well of pain beneath her unthinkable cruelty and we’ve been examining the motivations of her followers ever since.

But Heather Chandler is not the film’s major antagonist. While the blond junior roams the cafeteria insulting her classmates with an inane lunchtime poll, a true psychopath watches from the corner. J.D. lives with his construction magnate father and has spent his teenage years bouncing around from school to school. At first, Veronica is impressed with his frank morality and compassion for Heather’s victims, but this righteous altruism hides an inner darkness. The cafeteria scene ends with J.D. pulling a gun on two jocks and shooting them with blanks. This “prank” earns him a light suspension and a bad boy reputation, but it’s an uncomfortable precursor to our violent reality. He’s a prototypical school shooter obsessed with death, likely in response to his own traumatic past.

time travel horror movie

It’s impossible to talk about J.D. without mentioning the Columbine High School Massacre of 1999. Just over ten years later, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold would murder one teacher and twelve of their fellow classmates while failing to ignite a bomb that would decimate the building. Rumors swirled in the immediate aftermath about trench coat-wearing outcasts targeting popular students, but these theories have been largely disproven. However, uncomfortable parallels persist. Harris convinced a fellow student to join him in murder with tactics similar to the manipulation J.D. uses on Veronica. The cinematic character also fails in a plan to blow up the school and the stories of all three young men end in suicide. There is no evidence to suggest the Columbine killers were inspired by Slater’s performance but these similarities lend  an uncomfortable element of prophecy to an already dark film.

In the past 35 years, we’ve become acutely aware of the adolescent potential for destruction. Unfortunately the adults of Heathers have their heads in the sand. We watch darkly humorous faculty meetings in which teachers discuss what they believe to be suicides and openly weigh the value of one student over the next. The only grownup who seems to care is Ms. Fleming ( Penelope Milford ) the guidance counselor and even she is woefully out of touch. Using dated hippie language, she stages an event where she pressures her students to hold hands and emote. Unfortunately she’s more interested in helping herself. Hoping to capitalize on her own empathy, she invites TV cameras to film her students grieving for their friends. She treats the decision to stay alive like she would the choice between colleges and asks Veronia about her own suspected suicide attempt with the same banality Heather brings to the lunchtime polls. This self-involved counselor is only interested in recording the answer, not actually connecting with the students she’s supposed to be guiding.

time travel horror movie

We also see a shocking lack of support from the film’s parents. J.D. and his father have fallen into a bizarre role-reversal with J.D. adopting the persona of a ’50s-era sitcom dad and his father that of an obedient son. Like Ms. Fleming’s performance, these practiced exchanges are meant to project the illusion of love while maintaining emotional distance between parent and child. Veronica’s own folks display similar detachment in vapid conversations repeated nearly word for word. They go through the motions of communication without actually saying anything of substance. When Veronica tries to talk about the deaths of her friends, her mother cuts her off with a cold, “you’ll live.” The next time Mrs. Sawyer ( Jennifer Rhodes ) sees her daughter, she’s hanging from the ceiling. Fortunately Veronica has staged this suicide to deceive J.D., but it’s only in perceived death that we see genuine empathy from her mother.

Another parent is not so lucky. J.D. has concocted an elaborate scene to murder jocks Kurt ( Lance Fenton ) and Ram ( Patrick Labyorteaux ) in the guise of a joint suicide between clandestined lovers and the world now believes his ruse. At the crowded funeral, a grief-stricken father stands next to a coffin wailing, “I love my dead gay son” while J.D. wonders from the pews if he would have this same compassion if his son was alive. It’s a brutal moment of truth in an outlandish film. Perhaps better parenting could have prevented Kurt from becoming the kind of bully J.D. would target. We now have a better understanding about the emotional support teenagers need, but the students in Heathers have been thrown to the wolves.

At the same funeral, Veronica sees a little girl crying in the front row. She not only witnesses the collateral damage she’s caused, but realizes that future generations are watching her behavior. She is showing young girls that social change is only possible through violence and others are copying this deadly trend. Despite the popular song Teenage Suicide (Don’t Do It!) by Big Fun, two other students attempt to take their own lives. Her teen angst has a growing body count and murdering her bullies has only turned them into martyrs.

time travel horror movie

Heathers delivers a somewhat happy ending by black comedy standards. After watching J.D. blow himself up, Veronica saunters back into school with a newfound freedom. She confronts Heather Duke (Doherty), the school’s reigning mean girl queen, and takes the symbolic red scrunchie out of her hair. Veronica declares herself the new sheriff in town and immediately begins her rule by making a friend. She approaches a severely bullied student and makes a date to watch videos on the night of the prom, using her popularity to lift someone else up. She’s learned on her own that taking out one Heather opens the door for someone else to step into the vacuum. The only way to combat toxic cruelty is to normalize acts of generosity. Rather than destroying her enemies, she will lead the school with kindness.

Heathers concludes with another rendition of “Que Sera, Sera.” In a more modern cover, a soloist delivers an informal answer hinting at a brighter future. We still don’t know what the future holds, but we don’t have to adhere to the social hierarchy we’ve inherited. We each have the power to decide what “will be” if we’re brave enough to separate ourselves from the popular crowd. The generation who watched Heathers as children are now raising their own teens and kids. One can only hope we’ve learned the lessons of this sharp satire. The future’s not ours to see, but if we guide our children with honesty and compassion, maybe we’ll raise a generation of Veronicas instead.

How Scary Is Totally Killer , Prime Video’s Time-Traveling New Slasher Comedy?

It’s back to the future meets scream , but is it more ’80s action comedy or gory ’90s horror.

For die-hards, no horror movie can be too terrifying. But for you, a wimp, the wrong one can leave you miserable. Never fear, scaredies, because Slate’s Scaredy Scale is here to help. We’ve put together a highly scientific and mostly spoiler-free system for rating new horror movies, comparing them with classics along a 10-point scale. And because not everyone is scared by the same things—some viewers can’t stand jump scares, while others are haunted by more psychological terrors or can’t stomach arterial spurts—it breaks down each movie’s frights across three criteria: suspense, spookiness, and gore.

Grab your parachute pants and put your hair in a side ponytail, because this time we’re assessing Blumhouse’s new time-travel slasher for Prime Video, starring Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper from Mad Men , Sabrina from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ). Directed by Always Be My Maybe ’s Nahnatchka Khan, Totally Killer follows teenager Jamie (Shipka) as she journeys back in time to catch the mystery murderer who would go on to target her adolescent parents and their friends from the 1980s to the present day. The movie’s generous helpings of nostalgia, paired with its comedic tone and Halloween setting, make it a perfect watch for spooky season, though viewers should be aware that it does boast an R rating and a not-insubstantial body count. Mashable called it an “ R-rated Disney Channel Original Movie ,” which it hastened to add was a compliment, all of which seems about right. But is this really kiddie stuff, or is it more like the kind of teen bloodbath that has left generations afraid to answer the phone ? Let’s take a stab at breaking it all down.

Any movie emulating ’80s horror is bound to have at least a handful of jump scares here and there, and Totally Killer is no exception. Luckily for those with naturally higher heart rates, the movie keeps those to just a few, at some pretty predictable moments. It’s about as suspenseful as you would expect of a movie with a sardonic lead whose trip into the past leaves her kvetching about missing Wi-Fi, other characters’ poor understanding of consent, and the disappointing quality of ’80s weed. Which is to say, it’s more funny than nerve-racking.

Totally Killer may not be especially frightening, but it is a slasher, and there’s no shortage of slashing: The villain, dubbed the Sweet 16 Killer, is known for knifing his victims, well, 16 times. To the movie’s credit, a good portion of the bloodshed happens off-screen. We might watch the killer perform the stabbing motion , but we don’t always see the blade meet the body. That being said, there are plenty of times when we definitely do witness the butcher slaughter his prey, and, however the deed itself is shot, there’s always a bloody corpse left in view after the masked assassin finishes the job. Of these three categories, I’m most desensitized to gore, but the sounds of the executions still sometimes made me grimace, even if the gruesome act was hidden by the camera.

This movie spends a good chunk of its run time laughing at ’80s scary movies and the ’80s in general. Jamie balks at the high school’s lack of security when, after just saying she’s an exchange student, she’s handed a schedule. She hitches a ride from a stranger, a mother with young children who is surprised when Jamie hesitates at her offer to drive her to the high school and proceeds to smoke in the car the entire way. And Jamie’s parents and their friends aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box, more concerned with pot brownies and sex than the brutal deaths of their friends. Not to mention, she gets to do all of this because of time travel. All of which is to say: The movie isn’t taking any of this too seriously. The most that stays with you when it’s over are the jokes, not the shivers. Still, a serial killer is a serial killer, and that’s a threat that’s at least more real than time travel, so I give this a modest 2.

Totally Killer is a good mix of traditional horror, meta humor, and Reagan-era throwbacks, all peppered with some f-bombs. It’s more entertaining than it is hair-raising, which is good news for all the Shipka fans who may be accustomed to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ’s fairly mild shocks. However, those suffering from hemophobia—or still scarred by ’80s fashion—might have to occasionally cover their eyes.

10 Best Horror Game Protagonists, Ranked

Star trek: enterprise - what happened to jonathan archer, mattel's street sharks action figures bite off a piece of nostalgia.

When it comes to time travel, the genre that uses it most tends to be straight science fiction films for very obvious reasons. However, it's worth noting that the idea of time travel is well-suited for the horror genre for a couple of different reasons. There is the fact that when a character travels into the past or the future, they might think they know what they are going to encounter, but the fact of the matter is that all kinds of nightmares can unfold.

It turns out that horror movies tend to combine with science fiction more often than people realize. Certainly, there are monsters or killers that aren't rooted in science at all. But there are plenty of times when the villains are either using an aspect of science or birthed by science itself. Time travel is one of those aspects of science that is easy to lean on when trying to show the dangers of science fiction precisely because so much can go wrong. That's why some of the best horror movies out there tend to use time travel as a major plot device.

Project Almanac

Some might find Project Almanac to be an odd movie to start off this list because it's not strictly a horror movie. However, it does have dark enough elements that it can be featured as a horror movie that relies heavily on science fiction. The movie features a group of teens that first discover and then complete a time machine that has limited range but still gives them plenty of ability to travel back in time and change things so that they can benefit.

Fixing ever-growing mistakes is part of the horror aspect as things start to go wrong at a rather alarming rate. But it's the fact that when these teens actually run into themselves in the time stream, they essentially wipe themselves out that the movie really starts to grip its audience as a horror movie. Especially since the way that they are obliterated is very, very creepy.

When it comes to some of the best horror movies that deal with time travel, it's really about being caught in a time loop that makes them scary. Melissa George stars in this particular time loop/time travel movie where she and a group of friends board a seemingly abandoned ocean liner that just happens to be in the Bermuda Triangle . At first, they think it's quite an interesting little setting but things soon turn violent and deadly as they realize that a hooded figure is hunting down the friends and killing them one by one.

It turns out that the killer is actually none other than George's character who is attempting to break the time loop she's realized they're all trapped in. This movie is one of the better but lesser-known horror movies that deal with time travel because it has a little of everything. There are the more traditional slasher aspects of the film, mixed in with the time loop to give it a pretty original premise.

While Abigail Breslin's best-known horror movie is likely Zombieland , she starred in another spooky ghost story that involved time travel and time loops. In Haunter , Breslin plays a ghost girl by the name of Lisa who is doomed to relive the day in 1985 when her entire family was killed. She has to do this while the rest of the world moves on around her. However, while Haunter starts out as a movie that's about a kind of time loop, it eventually turns into something a little more time travel-focused like Quantum Leap .

Lisa realizes that she can essentially "jump" into the present by inhabiting the body of another young girl who now lives in the house. Unfortunately, she soon finds out that the killer can do the same kind of body leaping that she can. The film does a nice job of combining a more straightforward slasher film with an interesting spin on a ghost story that is told from the perspective of the ghost and a time loop aspect.

The Endless

Yet another movie that is more about the inability to travel in time, than time travel, this time loop-based horror movie still counts thanks to the fact that parts of this world move in different times depending on where the characters are located. The movie by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead sees them star as a pair of brothers who escaped a kind of cult years ago. They end up going back to where the cult was located and discover that many of the people they left behind decades ago don't seem to have aged at all. The cult, Camp Arcadia, is located on a strange plot of land filled with various time loop pockets that allow for a very original take on the kind of cosmic horror that comes from time travel. There's also a really good mystery wrapped up into this film that amps up the tension and that makes the horror of the situation that much better.

Army Of Darkness

While some people might feel that Army of Darkness is more of a comedy than a straight horror movie, it's important to note Sam Raimi simply liked to add a dash of humor into his horror films . The third film in the original Evil Dead trilogy saw Ash get transported back in time by the Necronomicon. He ends up being transported to the middle ages where he has to try and help the folks there overcome an invasion of the evil dead.

While there are plenty of good and funny moments in this movie, such as Ash explaining to everyone what his "boomstick" is, there's also plenty of monsters and skeletons and creepy crawlies that were no doubt plenty creepy, especially when the film first came out. This is one of those films that isn't going to have chills running up and down a viewer's spine but it certainly fits into the horror genre thanks to quite a bit of death and destruction that takes place thanks to truly evil beings.

The Time-Travel Slasher Film Totally Killer Is Exactly That

The prime video-blumhouse production is back to the future meets scream starring kiernan shipka..

Totally Killer is on Prime Video now.

Totally Killer , a new Blumhouse film that hits Prime Video today , blends three of my favorite genres: time travel, horror, and whodunit . It’s about a teenager who travels back in time to stop a masked killer, teaming up with her teenage mom in the process, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as that sounds.

Related Content

Kiernan Shipka plays Jamie, a modern teenager who brushes off her lame mom Pam (Julie Bowen) while also borrowing her vintage clothing. Pam had a traumatic childhood because, almost 40 years earlier, three of her best friends were killed by someone who came to be known as the Sweet 16 Killer. Well, he returns—and through a slightly forced (but we’ll allow it) set of circumstances, Jamie finds herself back in 1987 with a chance to stop the killer when he first emerged. To do so, Jamie has to find the teen version of her mom, played by Olivia Holt. But Pam of 1987 is not like Pam of 2023, and Jamie is quickly forced to pivot from the rules of time travel she’s used to.

At this point, you’re probably thinking what we were whie watching: “Oh, so it’s Back to the Future meets Scream , ” which, yes, it is. But Totally Killer is fully aware of that too and completely buys into it. Once Jamie gets to the past, among the first things she does is use Back to the Future to explain to the other characters what is going on, and instantly the film gets taken up a notch. This is a movie that’s not beholden to the rules of any other time-travel movie. It doesn’t care that, in other movies, characters choose not to acknowledge time travel because it might destroy the universe. Here, the movie is so open with it, it’s constantly surprising us with new twists and turns that are familiar, but different enough, to keep us interested. We won’t spoil anything specific but there’s some really smart stuff that happens.

The Sweet 16 Killer. Or is it killers?

The film also directly references Scream , though it’s not a movie characters in 1987 have seen yet. Still, as Jamie, Pam, and the others slowly realize they’re being killed, the time-travel tropes get interlaced with the whodunit aspect. We begin to notice how people are reacting to things, who’s absent in certain scenes, and so on. That idea of a masked killer mystery and all its subsequent horror aspects is much more dialed back and predictable than the time travel stuff is but, nevertheless, adds a very welcome layer of interest to a movie that already was kicking on all cylinders.

Shipka has a commanding, confident presence in the film, which is crucial because she has to be both kind of cool in 2023 while also being kind of not in 1987. That timeless charisma lets Jamie embrace any embarrassment and endear herself both to the audience and the characters. Beyond her, no one in the supporting cast really stands out, unfortunately, but the actors in 1987 do seem to be having a lot of fun playing up the typical jock/cheerleader/nerd stereotypes.

Eventually, once you accept that the killer story is really just an excuse for the time-travel element to challenge our expectations of it, Totally Killer is exactly that. By the time it gets to the third act, it’s much more emotional and dramatic than one would expect, and way more surprising than you’d imagine. All in all, it’ll probably work better for fans of these specific genres, and it never quite elevates or distinguishes itself like the films that inspired it, but as a standalone streaming film, it’s eons better than the norm. A very smart, enjoyable, entry-level horror film with some of the most fun time travel in recent memory.

Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, from a screenplay by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver, and Jen D’Angelo, Totally Killer is now streaming on Prime Video.

I think we can all agree that characters in time travel movies generally tend to royally screw things up somewhere along the way. Whether they are trying to prevent the world from ending or just improve a bad situation, catastrophe usually follows. Add a crazed serial killer, a demonic force, or other form of supernatural tomfoolery and it transforms into a time travel horror film. Be it basic time travel or crazy time loops , these five movies combine time travel and carnage to deliver a mind-boggling and often terrifying viewing experience and they did it with style.

Timecrimes (2007)

Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, this Spanish sci-fi horror film will delight those who love a good time paradox. The flick stars Héctor, a middle-aged man who gets stuck in a time loop and makes a bad situation much worse. Before long, Héctor must outsmart multiple versions of himself and figure out how to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Timecrimes  is a very clever, effectively-paced, and tension-filled story that proves a big-budget isn’t needed to make a great film.

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Ever wish you could go back to a point in your life and make one small change? The Butterfly Effect , starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, will make you think twice about that. The movie tells the story of Evan Treborn (Kutcher) and Kayleigh Miller (Smart) and psychological traumas they’ve endured together. Evan discovers by reading his old journals that he can time travel to points in his life and make small changes that have drastic consequences. However, only chaos and unintended mayhem result from his actions. At one point he wakes up as a double amputee!  Another attempt at making a change lands him in prison for murder. Each attempt Evan makes to fix the present just screws it up even more. This dark time travel flick holds up surprisingly well. Be sure to watch the director’s cut ending when revisiting.

Time travel horror

The House at the End of Time (2013)

The House at the End of Time is a Venezuelan horror film directed by Alejandro Hidalgo. The movie tells the story of Dulce, a mother to two young boys. She begins experiencing strange goings on in their house (slamming doors, strange noises, etc…). At one point someone even attempts to break in, but no one will believe her story. The film tries to convince us that maybe some type of poltergeist situation is unfolding. But as the flick progresses we find out that house has the ability to send its inhabitants back in time. This is great movie that combines horror, time travel, and the emotional journey of a mother who makes the ultimate sacrifice for her children. Also, rumor has it that a remake may be coming soon!

Happy Death Day (2017)

Picture the movie Groundhog Day , but with a psychotic serial killer murdering you over and over . The film stars Jessica Rothe as college student Tree Gelbman who gets stuck in a time loop on her birthday, the same day a masked murderer is plotting her demise. She must find a way to defeat the killer or forever reawaken to the same dreaded day. Tree starts her journey as a superficial, self-centered, sorority girl who has few likable qualities. However, by the end of the picture, Tree does a complete 180 that will leave you rooting for her to be the “final girl.”

Army of Darkness (1992)

While devoid of any time loop or mind-boggling time travel paradox, the cult classic Army of Darkness is still a highly effective time travel film. Bruce Campbell reprises his role in the third installment in the  Evil Dead franchise as the legendary Ash Williams. Ash is transported back to medieval times and must find the Necronomicon so he can return to the 20th century. Only equipped with a shotgun, his trusty chainsaw, and his beloved Oldsmobile, he fights his way through hordes of deadites. Ash delivers some highly quotable lines in the film and plenty of hilarious dialogue that makes it more than worthy of its cult classic status.

‘Totally Killer’ Is a Time-Travel Slasher With a Brand New Final Girl

By Brenna Ehrlich

Brenna Ehrlich

Ever wish Back to the Future was more like Scream ? Was your main beef with Halloween : “Hmm, not enough time travel ?” Then Totally Killer is for you.

Amazon ‘s glossiest, wildest new horror -comedy finds Jamie ( Kiernan Shipka ) reeling after her mother ( Julie Bowen ) is murdered by a masked menace known as the “Sweet Sixteen Killer.” Thirty-five years earlier, the same murderer went on a killing spree in her town, leaving her mom the sole survivor of a group of teen friends. Luckily, her best friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema) just finished building a time machine for the science fair, which allows Jamie to travel back to when the first murders occurred and team up with her teenage mom ( Olivia Holt ) in an effort to save everyone.

Khan caught up with Rolling Stone before Totally Killer ‘s Oct. 6 premiere on Amazon to discuss serial killers , final girls, and how she would have wanted Don’t Trust the B to end.

Tell me a little bit about how this project came to you. Nahnatchka Khan: The last movie that I directed was this rom-com called Always Be My Maybe. I had a general meeting off of that with Jason Blum and his team at Blumhouse; I’ve also been a horror fan. And then they sent me Totally Killer . Once I got locked into the premise I was so excited. I was like, “Oh, I feel like I can have a lot of fun with this.” You know, the slasher horror, time travel, the Eighties, there’s a lot of balls in the air here and I felt like it’d be a fun challenge.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

I feel like slashers have come back over the last few years — with all the big series getting new chapters and movies like yours premiering. Why do you think that is? Khan: Those franchises really are sort of evergreen. People have been inspired and have come up with great ways to continue [those series]. They still feel fresh and surprising. But I think, honestly, there’s something about serial killers in general that society can’t get enough of and I think slasher movies are heightened versions of that. There’s just something fascinating to us about horrific people doing these terrible things.

The 7 Best Things to Buy from Amazon This Month, According to Our Editors

How real hitmakers and a boy band bootcamp made nicholas galitzine a pop star in 'the idea of you', colleen hoover's thriller ‘verity’ to be adapted into a movie.

I remember that! She was helping James Van Der Beek study for a role. Khan: That’s right. They were observing each other for a body swap movie. And she was so funny; she was like 12 back then. So when I met her on this, I was like, “I don’t know if you’re going to remember, but we worked together briefly about 10 years ago.” She was like, “Of course, I remember!” She’s so professional because she’s done this for so long. But she’s just got the ability to play things on so many different levels.

And the rest of the cast is so perfect, too. All of them come from a teen show: Olivia Holt from Cruel Summer , Charlie Gillespie from Julie and the Phantoms , Lochlyn Munro from Riverdale . Khan: Olivia sent in her audition and she just blew us all away because she was so the embodiment of that John Hughes-alpha, head cheerleader kind of vibe from the movies of that era. But in a way that was funny and not hateable. And Lochlyn [who plays Jamie’s dad] — that was really important, too. Because, you know, part of this movie is it’s a whodunit, right? So we’re sort of populating the world with suspects. And there’s something about Lochlyn, when I see his face, immediately I’m like, “He could be a suspect.”

When the trailer came out, I remember a lot of people comparing your movie to 2015’s The Final Girls , where a girl loses her mother, who is screen queen, and then magically enters one of her Eighties movies. Obviously, these movies are different in a lot of ways, but have you seen The Final Girls ? Khan: I have seen that movie; I think it’s a great movie. It’s very different from ours; that one, to me, feels more like it owes a nod to The Last Action Hero . You know what I mean? Like getting sucked back into a movie. Ours is more like Back to the Future . But the idea of the final girl is something that exists in the genre. Pam has been living with this trauma. She’s the final girl of her group of friends. She’s been the sole survivor for 35 years, but she’s lived with that guilt and been prepared that anything could happen. And she handed that down to her daughter, she gave her all these tools. And then it kind of comes back into play, and the daughter is now forced into the mom’s story. That’s an interesting handoff for the final girl idea.

How have you seen the final girl trope change over the years?  Khan: I think the progression in the genre was inevitable — starting from “the babysitter’s being killed” slashers and then really giving these women more agency. With a lot of these new movies, and certainly with this one, something that was appealing to me was the idea that even though Jamie is being hunted, and there is a vicious killer on the loose, she’s actually kind of hunting him. She’s propelling the story in a way that feels new to me because she will not stop until she stops him. That unrelenting drive of this young woman who’s at the center of this movie just feels like a new kind of shade on that idea of a final girl.

Hear the journey tune steve perry rerecorded with steve lukather's son, they couldn't afford taylor swift tickets in america. so they flew to france, 'word salad': andrew huberman's cannabis claims slammed by experts.

Did anyone get into any mischief on set? Khan: Everyone was always karaoke-ing. I was like, “Guys, it’s still hard Covid. Please don’t share a microphone. We’re trying to just finish this movie.” For some reason, also, everybody can sing. Like, Olivia obviously has a pop background. Charlie brought his guitar to set. Actually, part of his audition was singing a Robyn song. It was a fun set. It honestly felt like a singalong could break out at any moment. But meanwhile, serial killers are chasing everybody through the Haunted House of Horrors or whatever. It’s like, “Guys, put the guitars away.”

Also, I have to ask, how would you have liked Don’t Trust the B—- to end? I loved that show. Khan: Recently, we got into discussions about revisiting that world — like a Christmas movie or something. But I remember thinking that Chloe would definitely have gotten canceled thousands of times over and inserted herself into really bad global situations. You know that picture of Putin with his shirt off on like a boat or something like that? I can see Chloe in the background with a glass of champagne. She wouldn’t be changing, I think. She’d be adapting, not changing.

Prime Video & Blumhouse Announce Cast Of Time Travel Horror Comedy ‘Totally Killer’

Get ready for another slasher horror comedy… but with a time travel twist! Prime Video and Blumhouse announced Totally Killer today.

The feature marks the continued partnership of Prime Video and Blumhouse Television. It will star Kiernan Shipka ( Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ), Olivia Holt ( Cruel Summer ), Julie Bowen ( Modern Family ), and Randall Park ( Fresh off the Boat ). Nahnatchka Khan ( Always Be My Maybe ) will direct Totally Killer .

The film follows Jamie (Shipka), as her mom Pam (Bowen) finds herself terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer—a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema), she travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.

“The idea of a horror-comedy time travel movie is, I’m gonna be honest, something I never thought of in my life. So when I was approached by the amazing creatives at Blumhouse and Amazon about Totally Killer, it was just so unique and exciting I had to be involved. And then add this incredible cast on top of that? Everybody get readyyyyyyy,” said Khan.

Jen D’Angelo penned the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver. Principal photography on the Prime Video film begins today in Vancouver.

“With Nahnatchka’s vision and the exciting cast led by Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt, we are confident Totally Killer will resonate with our audience around the world,” said Julie Rapaport, head of movies at Amazon Studios. “We could not be more thrilled to watch this story come to life and to continue our longstanding collaboration with the incredible team at Blumhouse.”

So, what do you think of the slasher horror – time travel – comedy premise? It sounds like it could put a fun new twist on all those genres. But we’ll have to wait and see to find out!

The Scariest Travel Horror Movies Of All Time

Midsommar

Holidays and trips are generally supposed to be fun-filled occasions when a person and their friends or family get to enjoy fresh scenery away from the monotony of home. But since horror movies' favorite thing to do is subvert the expectations of what should happen when everything is going smoothly, when travel goes wrong in a genre movie, it goes fully into a lower circle of hell for everyone involved. Where relaxation might have originally been the name of the travel game, everyone's plans must quickly shift from tourist/traveler to survival mode as they battle supernatural and/or human monsters, often to the death.

Travel horror movies have spectacularly high body counts as the protagonists struggle to stay alive in the added stress of an unfamiliar or foreign land they must navigate along with whatever fresh horror the story brings into their orbit. From family reunions gone wrong, road trips run off-road, the spooky side of international relocation, plane crashes, and even research voyages abroad that end in murder and mayhem, these are the scariest travel horror movies of all time.

Don't Look Now

Based on Daphne DuMaurier's chilling novel of the same name, Don't Look Now follows John and Laura Baxter after the drowning death of their young daughter Christine in the pond next to their English country home. Overwhelmed by grief and post-traumatic stress, the Baxters send their son to boarding school in London and the couple retreats to Venice, where John will be helping restore an ancient church. While enjoying a canal-side meal, the Baxters meet Heather and Wendy; Heather claims to be psychic, and has messages for the Baxters from Christine. Heather says Christine's spirit has been following them around.

Told in a phantasmagorical style that weaves a variety of enigmatic imagery throughout the movie, Don't Look Now  sees John become obsessed with a child's figure he sees running around Venice in the same red raincoat his daughter used to wear. Time also becomes slippery as John's grief plays tricks on his mind, all the while reports of a serial killer roaming Venice adds another menacing backdrop to this lush, haunting, and shocking installment of travel horror.

When Adelaide was a little girl she went with her family to Santa Cruz, California on vacation. While there, she wandered off and encountered a doppelgänger who assaulted her, and the experience left her temporarily mute.

Decades later, Adelaide returns to Santa Cruz with her husband Gabe and their two children Zora and Jason, even against Adelaide's better judgment and her terrible premonition that little girl she once saw was out to hurt her. When a family appears on their doorstep, looking just like them, Adelaide's nightmare turns into her family's too, as the violent interlopers terrorize and torture the family.

As it turns out, there is an entire world of people living underground who share a soul with their identical twins above, and they have surfaced to reclaim lives that were taken from them in this ghastly experiment. As our heroes battle their Tethereds, the truth of Adelaide's shocking past is finally revealed in a terrifying and heartbreaking climax, securing Us as one of the scariest travel films ever.

Death Proof

As if airports aren't uncomfortable enough, in Quentin Tarantino 's grindhouse film Death Proof , an airport is the hunting ground for a serial killer named Stuntman Mike who chooses his female victims in the parking lot. The first half tells the story of Austin DJ Jungle Julia, Shanna, and their visiting friend Arlene, who meet Stuntman Mike at local bar. Arlene notices Mike's creepy muscle car with an aggressive skull and lightning bolt design on its hood and suspects he's been following them. As the night winds down, Mike claims that his stunt car is death proof, but only for the person driving it, as he vehicular murders Pam to go on to crash his car into Shanna's, brutally killing the group of women and somehow surviving.

In the next chunk of Death Proof , Stuntman Mike targets a group of stunt women in Lebanon, Tennessee who've just picked up their friend Zoe Bell (playing herself) visiting from New Zealand. Zoe's plan is to play ship's mast on a white Dodge Challenger, which just happens to be available for sale locally. With Bell performing her own stunts on the hood of the car, Death Proof is an adrenaline-fueled exercise in terror as the women fight to survive their encounter with one of the screen's most unusual serial killers.

An American Werewolf in London

"Stay off the moors" are the very simple instructions that American tourists David and Jack receive while backpacking through Scotland. But the two men stray off the road and find themselves lost in the swamps and summarily attacked by what they thought was a wolf. Jack is killed on the spot and David badly mauled, waking up days later in a London hospital being tended by a beautiful nurse named Alex who invites him into her home. Unfortunately for David, he finds out the hard way that it wasn't a wolf that attacked him — it was a werewolf , and now he's turned into one too, terrorizing London and brutalizing its citizens.

While there are definitely comedic elements to An American Werewolf in London thanks to director John Landis' dark sense of humor, make no mistake that this movie is absolutely horrifying. David is haunted by the ghosts of his victims as well as Jack, whose body decomposes throughout the film, and it also features one of the best and most painful-looking werewolf transformations in horror history. The ending is as tragic as it is heart-wrenching.

After her sister stages a murder-suicide that includes their parents, a traumatized Dani decides to go to along with her anthropologist boyfriend Christian and his classmates to Sweden for thesis research. While the scenery is beautiful and lush, drenched in light as Sweden's summers only have a few hours of darkness each night, Dani and company quickly sense that not everything is as idyllic as it appears on the surface. This foreboding kicks into overdrive when the group is invited to witness a suicide ceremony that takes the lives of the two oldest members of the community.

Is it the steady stream of hallucinogens that the visitors are drinking or is something more sinister going on as one by one, the foreigners disappear from the village until only Dani and Christian remain?  Midsommar is a technicolor nightmare that ends as horrifically as it started, making this one of the creepiest travel horror movies of all time.

Paxton and Josh are quintessential "ugly Americans" backpacking across Europe via train, behaving badly and not feeling even remotely responsible to act any other way. On their travels, they meet a guy who tells them they should go to Bratislava, Slovakia because women there are famously beautiful with liberal sexual inhibitions. But after a night of wild partying with said women, first their Icelandic friend Oli goes missing, then Josh and a Japanese tourist named Yuki.

When Paxton is kidnapped, we quickly realize that tourists are being bought and sold on the dark web in order to be tortured and killed by their purchasers. The monsters in Hostel are very human, and while many find the film more gory than scary, it certainly made a lot of people reconsider their backpacking trips across Europe for years after the film came out.

Fifteen years ago, Loretta broke off contact with her parents after she eloped with her professor, a union her folks disapproved of that ended in a violent altercation between the three of them. But now Loretta's kids Tyler and Becca are curious about their family, and Loretta arranges for them to take the train and stay with Nana and PopPop for a week while Loretta goes on a cruise with her new boyfriend. Having never even seen a photo of their grandparents, Tyler and Becca have no idea what to expect, but they certainly don't expect to see Nana running around naked at night and projectile vomiting, or PopPop's weird behavior and strangely menacing stories. There's also a strange smell coming from the basement which the kids have been told is mold, but turns out to be far from it.

By the end, everyone's holiday's were ruined and the body count reaches five, quite a feat for a film with a small cast of just eight people. In classic M. Night Shyamalan style, the twist in The Visit is hard to see coming and is sufficiently scary to have made this one of the most disturbing travel horror movies of all time.

Karen Davis is just a regular American exchange student in Japan sent on a simple task to take care of a housebound American living locally. But what Karen doesn't know is that Emma's house is haunted by the horrifying specter Kayako, who was murdered by her husband along with their child and even their pet in a fit of his jealous rage. Her restless spirit turned into a demonic entity due to the violence of Kayako's death, and this entity now comes with a curse that falls on anyone who enters her dwelling.

All of Karen's best attempts to defeat Kayako fail, and in the end this American in a Tokyo suburb finds herself fully enmeshed in Kayako's terrible story. Filled to the brim with effective and disturbing jump scares as well as a truly creepy story based on the original Japanese film Ju-On , The Grudge will make you think twice about that exchange program, or going anywhere at all outside the safety of your own curse-free home.

After a shipwreck that finds Jenn washed ashore along with her badly injured friend Brad on a deserted island, she is further horrified to find the graves of a family long dead buried on the island. Using her wits, Jenn cobbles together what she can of their belongings to try and save Brad, but it's already too late. She buries him along with the family and waits for rescue. But after night falls, she sees and hears a monstrous creature coming out of the water and onto land. It devours what was left of Brad's body.

Sweetheart features a powerhouse performance by Kiersey Clemons as Jenn battles not just the aquatic monster that has a taste for human flesh, but also the strange circumstances that led to the shipwreck in the first place. When her boyfriend Lucas and frenemy Mia show up on the island, their erratic and abusive behavior is as terrifying as the creature who has been terrorizing Jenn for days. Sweetheart features both human and supernatural monsters on the remote island, securing its place as one of the more unique (and scariest) travel horror movies of all time.

The Descent

As extreme sports enthusiasts, Sarah and her friends meet every year in a different place around the world to tackle whatever the local physical feat would be, from rock climbing to white water rafting. But after a terrible car accident in Scotland kills Sarah's husband and daughter, the next time the friends meet in North Carolina to spelunk Appalachian caves is a melancholy reunion for a still-grieving Sarah who is also suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. While cave diving deep through a narrow corridor —  The Descent is a claustrophobic's nightmare come to life — a cave-in blocks the group of women, who soon find that their group leader Juno has taken them into an unknown cave system with no apparent way out as they continue down, down, down.

As if the enclosed spaces weren't already terrifying enough, the women are quickly set upon by a group of flesh-eating humanoid monsters who have adapted perfectly to cave living. As the women use their considerable skills to find their way out, their friendships are put to the test as much as their physical abilities and primal survival modes. The European ending is one of the grimmest you'll ever see, but even the American version with a sole survivor remains a most terrifying example of travel horror.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

While road tripping, Sally, her brother Franklin, and their friends make the mistake of picking up a hitchhiker between towns. The hitchhiker is an odd duck and creeps the group out even before he pulls out a razor and cuts Franklin, forcing the group to kick him out of the car. Reeling from the strange encounter, they continue on their trip with one detour to a local swimming hole that ends up being their next big mistake.

The pond is next to the Sawyer home, which houses a demented family of torture murderers who also like to eat their victims, and it's not long before Leatherface and his chainsaw are after Sally and her friends. Tobe Hooper's brutal Texas Chain Saw Massacre is so scary particularly because of the banal settings of a road trip and back-country Texas that become the backdrop to some of the most disturbing imagery ever put to screen.

You're Next

When Erin travels with her boyfriend Crispian Davison to his family reunion at their huge vacation estate in suburban Missouri, she's nervous about meeting his wealthy family for the first time, especially since she didn't grow up as a person of means. When things begin getting tense at the first group dinner, Erin thinks it's just family drama playing out — until an arrow flies through the dormer window, killing Aimee Davison's boyfriend Tariq and wounding the older Davison brother, Drake.

All of their cellphones go dead and soon a group of intruders wearing animal masks breaches the mansion and brutally stalks and kills Davison family members one by one. As Erin uses her skills from a traumatic survivalist childhood to outwit the killers, she discovers that Crispian has his own terrible secrets, which have turned him and his brother Felix into the worst kind of human monsters. Family reunions are always complicated in one way or another as dysfunctional family dynamics can rise to the surface. But in  You're Next , these tensions turn deadly, making us all wonder about skipping our own.

Tara and her friends travel to Ireland from the U.S. to visit with their local buddy Jack to explore the Irish countryside as well as its natural abundance of magic mushrooms for a different kind of trip entirely. Jack warns them of the difference between psilocybin mushrooms and the dangerous death's bell mushroom that can provoke serious psychosis. Tara gets confused, though, and accidentally pops a death's bell, prompting a seizure.

On their jaunt through the glorious moss-covered woods they come upon an abandoned building that Jack later tells them was a children's home until the head monk in charge went mad and killed a bunch of people. Already having consumed their fair share of hallucinogenic mushrooms, Tara starts having even more disturbing visions of her own that might be premonitions about her friends' murders at the hand of said monk.

But as the body count rises and the menacing monk along with his various familiars sets an unsettling scene in such a lush surrounding, we find out that nothing is quite what it has seemed, nor is Tara who we think she is. Shrooms is a cautionary tale about following simple instructions when visiting a foreign land. Your life could totally depend on it.

Jessie Burlingame and her friends are on their way to a hiking and camping trip in the West Virginia hills when their tires suddenly go flat. As they investigate, they realize that the road has been booby-trapped and their concern shifts to who might be targeting them. In the process, they connect with a medical student named Chris who'd been sent down the same wrong turn as Jessie, Carly, Scott, Evan, and Francine as the attacks on the group escalate. While the group fights for survival, they discover their stalkers are a group of inbred cannibal killers who enjoy playing terribly with their food before murdering and cooking the folks they entrap off that beaten path.

Wrong Turn features a solid hat-tip to Stephen King 's Gerald's Game character Jessie Burlingame, and Jessie in the movie is even handcuffed to a bed just as she is in King's story. While the quality of the many sequels to Wrong Turn quickly devolved, the original is taut and suspenseful with sufficiently terrifying human monsters to make it one of the scariest travel horror movies of all time.

After a robbery gone wrong takes Rob's life while his friend Luke witnesses the incident, Rob's four best friends decide to voyage to Sweden in his honor. Against the backdrop of this terrible trauma as well as the lush Swedish landscape (which is actually the Carpathian Mountains of Romania), the four friends honor Rob's memory until Dom badly injures his knee and can't walk. The group decides to cut through the forest in the hopes of getting back to civilization faster, but they soon find a number of disturbing elements including gutted animals and strange little objects everywhere.

Tensions in the group rise after they find a cabin filled with esoteric objects and paintings that seem to have a hypnotic effect on the group, among other things. Luke soon realizes they are being stalked by something massive and inhuman in the woods as his friends are snatched one by one, triggering his trauma of Rob's murder too. By the third act of The Ritual , the folk horror aspects are fully revealed as Luke must make a choice for his own life and redemption. This violent and grotesque tale of a memorial holiday gone totally off the rails should really make you just want to stay home.

While Wrong Turn may seem incredibly cliche for horror audiences today, back in 2003, this folk horror slow burn of cannibals and vacations gone wrong was the blueprint on how to tell a terrifying tale that will make audiences terrified to ever go on a road trip again. Set in the backwoods of West Virginia, after a group of friends has car trouble and panic about being stranded, they realize they are not alone in these woods, and that something terrifying lurks just beyond what they can see. The Hills Have Eyes

The Hills Have Eyes

Bloodthirsty mutant cannibals, government atomic zones, and being hunted down to feast on your flesh may not seem like the perfect vacation, but in The Hills Have Eyes , it is a horrifying and vile reality that a poor family must endure. Joy Ride

Possibly the greatest fear for people on a road trip is being stalked and hunted by a crazed lunatic in a car. Now replace car with massive semi-truck, and a terror unlike any other is realized to perfection in Joy Ride . Most people who have ever been behind the wheel of a car have experienced road rage in one form or another, but it just takes saying one wrong thing to the wrong person to create a living breathing nightmare from which there is no waking. Joy Ride may be a bit campy at times, but the underlying fear of being hunted by a psychopath behind the wheel is something audiences won't ever be able to shake.

Hostel

The quintessential movie about vacations gone wrong, Hostel makes sure anyone and everyone who watches it will never want to stay in these lovely little hotels ever again. While a group of college graduates travel to Europe for vacation, they soon realize that their home for the summer is not what it seems, and sex, drugs, violence, and pain lay in wait for them. This paranoia-inducing thriller and gore fest is one of the most shocking and vile films ever created, and gave way to the “torture-porn” moniker akin to Saw . Showcasing the gnarly underbelly of Hostels in Europe and how wrong things can go for tourists, this magnificent horror film will leave audiences utterly shaken.

When a couple gets stranded while traveling, they decide to spend the night at a local motel, only to realize they aren't alone, and if they don't act fast, they will be the stars and victims of a crazed killer's next snuff film. The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods

On the surface, The Cabin in the Woods seems like every generic would-be slasher film ever created. A group of college kids go to a creepy cabin for a mini-vacation and suddenly bad things begin to happen. However, the film has so many twists and turns it would make a roller coaster jealous. Being stranded isn't nearly as scary as being hunted by forces outside of your control, and the film showcases this fear beautifully. Nothing is as it seems, and the only way to survive is to fight.

A masterclass in body horror and making audiences squirm, The Ruins has managed to become a massive cult classic thanks to incredible acting, realistic depictions of tourists in terror, and a shocking and surprisingly well-crafted story. Sometimes people aren't the most dangerous of creatures, and The Ruins shows that even the smallest beings can be a deadly threat.

When a couple's car breaks down and they are stranded in the Australian outback, a dangerous and deadly hunter decides they are his next prey, and they must fight to survive at any cost. A gritty, dirty, and low-budget film that feels almost too real for comfort that was “based on true events,” Wolf Creek shows the disgusting and vile nature of man, and the struggle to survive in a world you're unfamiliar with. Not for the faint of heart or weak-willed, the film takes great pleasure in making viewers squirm.

Train to Busan

A film that helped revolutionize the dying zombie subgenre in horror, Train to Busan was a stomach-churning, pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that pulls no punches in drama, gore, and violence, and will have your palms nice and sweaty by the time the credits roll. As a zombie apocalypse outbreaks in the world, a young man must protect his daughter at any cost as their trip to Busan, South Korea became a living nightmare. Taking place nearly entirely on a train and in a train station, the film feels incredibly claustrophobic as zombies unlike anything mainstream audiences have ever seen rush in to chop on some human flesh.

The 45 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time, Ranked

From classics like Metropolis and Alien to Everything Everywhere All At Once, this is Collider's ranking of the best science fiction movies ever.

The science fiction genre has been one of the most consistently thrilling to explore throughout the history of cinema. The way a visual medium like film can depict futuristic worlds or alternate realities means that almost anything that can be imagined can be depicted on-screen. Since the silent era, filmmakers have been using the medium to their advantage, commenting on humanity's present and hypothesizing about its future through the science-fiction genre.

There are countless great sci-fi movies that have been released since the birth of cinema as an art form, and it's ultimately futile to try and name every single amazing one. There are simply too many top sci-fi movies, and it's a genre that's still thriving, with new potential classics released seemingly every year. The following are among the best of the best from the sci-fi genre, being classics for their entertainment value, excellent technical qualities, and historical significance , and are ranked below in order from great to greatest.

45 'Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes' (2020)

Directed by junta yamaguchi.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is one of the best Japanese movies of the last few years , and also stands as one of the most entertaining and rewatchable sci-fi films in recent memory. It deals with an initially limited form of time travel that involves a screen that shows footage from two minutes in the future, which leads to wonder, fortunes, and eventual chaos for the people who discover this strange phenomenon.

Made on a limited budget and filmed in a way that makes it appear like a single take , Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is quite dazzling for such a small-scale movie, and endlessly inventive/clever. It’s got an infectious spirit and is overall the kind of movie that will provide significant entertainment value for just about anyone who seeks it out.

44 'Voyage of the Rock Aliens' (1984)

Directed by james fargo.

Calling Voyage of the Rock Aliens ridiculous would be underselling it to a considerable extent, but that’s obvious, given it’s literally called Voyage of the Rock Aliens . It functions as a surprisingly good (and wonderfully cheesy) musical, a comedy that feels like a throwback to teen movies of the 1950s and ‘60s, and a sci-fi movie about aliens coming to Earth and trying/failing to fit into life on the planet.

Voyage of the Rock Aliens is a cult movie through and through, and one of the most 1980s-feeling movies to come out of the decade. It’s sloppy, the music probably isn’t for everyone, and watching it is an undeniably chaotic experience, but there’s so much energy and vibrancy to the whole thing that it’s hard to resist , particularly for any sci-fi fans who have a particular fondness for science fiction of the B-movie variety.

43 'August in the Water' (1995)

Directed by gakuryu ishii.

Blending some fantasy/supernatural elements with an odd yet compelling science fiction story, August in the Water is both a unique and underrated film. It focuses on several teenagers living in the Japanese city of Fukuoka, and explores what happens when one of them – a young girl – begins to develop mysterious powers, all the while strange occurrences continue to happen to the city’s population.

August in the Water isn’t exactly clear about the story it’s telling, nor is it particularly narrative-centered in the first place, but it is undeniably atmospheric and provides a distinct look/feel. It’s broad and open-ended enough to leave many things up to interpretation , and even those who get a bit lost in August in the Water will still be able to appreciate its visual style and singular tone.

42 'Poor Things' (2023)

Directed by yorgos lanthimos.

Poor Things was surprisingly successful for such an odd and offbeat movie, but those willing to get immersed in something a little different will likely find the film to be a rewarding one. It’s a surprisingly funny and always visually dazzling sci-fi movie about a woman who’s brought back to life, and then goes on a strange and sometimes alarming journey, rediscovering life and effectively coming of age for a second time.

Yorgos Lanthimos is perfectly suited to this kind of story and this sort of style, with the cast also shining while digging into the strange material they’ve been given, especially Emma Stone in the lead role, who won a second Oscar for her performance. Poor Things is a movie that’s a highlight of the 2020s so far, and feels like the sort of sci-fi movie that will one day be held up as a classic .

41 'Godzilla Minus One' (2023)

Directed by takashi yamazaki.

Speaking of relatively recent science fiction movies that already feel like modern classics, Godzilla Minus One was one of the biggest surprises of 2023, and one of the best Godzilla movies of the past couple of decades. It takes things back further in time than any other movie in the long-running series, taking place right after World War II, following people who are already struggling with surviving the war’s aftermath when the titular monster emerges and makes life even more difficult.

All the monster action in Godzilla Minus One is exciting and satisfying, but it’s the human characters – and their story – that give it the edge overall, and make it function as a genuinely good drama on top of being a kaiju movie . It’s very approachable and a perfect entry point into the series, particularly for anyone who’s more familiar with the American Godzilla movies and has yet to watch any from Japan.

Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One is currently not available to stream, rent, or purchase in the U.S.

40 'Woman in the Moon' (1929)

Directed by fritz lang.

The most famous sci-fi movie directed by Fritz Lang came out before Woman in the Moon (more on it a little down the line), but this 1929 shouldn’t be overlooked just because it’s his second-best science fiction film. It’s a remarkable cinematic achievement, considering it’s close to a century old, and remains an engaging film about an expedition to the moon – led by a scientist – in search of gold.

Now, given its age and premise, there are aspects here that feel more fictional than ever in a post-moon landing world , but considering Woman in the Moon predated humanity actually reaching the moon by 40 years, the sci-fi movie's predictions were still impressive . It’s also got inventive special effects and a surprisingly well-told and dramatic story, making it one of the best – and most underrated – films of the silent era, sci-fi or otherwise.

39 'Electric Dreams' (1984)

Directed by steve barron.

Perhaps feeling more like a quirky and heartfelt romantic comedy than a full-on science fiction movie, Electric Dreams does still center around an advanced computer that begins to fall for a young woman. The computer, in a sense, enters into a love triangle of sorts with the young man who purchased it, given the man also has feelings for the same woman, yet is too shy to approach her.

Electric Dreams then becomes like a sci-fi take on Cyrano de Bergerac , with the computer being Cyrano, helping a more conventional romantic partner while also having his own intense feelings of love toward a romance that can’t be. It might sound ridiculous, and Electric Dreams is kind of silly, but it’s also got a sincerity to it that makes it hard to resist . The cynical need not apply, but those open to the film’s odd charms might be it to be one of the more underrated sci-fi flicks of the ‘80s .

38 'Godzilla vs. Destoroyah' (1995)

Directed by takao okawara.

Throughout the remarkably long history of the Godzilla series , the titular monster has fought many other powerful and intimidating titans. For as mighty as foes like King Kong and King Ghidorah have been, there’s an argument to be made that his most powerful enemy wasn’t even a “King,” and that it was actually Destoroyah, a monster who’s only been featured in one Godzilla film to date: 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah .

Notable for being one of the most intense, frightening, and moving films in the entire series, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah serves as a grand finale for Godzilla ’s Heisei era, which comprised seven movies released between 1984 and 1995 that told a surprisingly continuity-heavy narrative spanning just over a decade. It might not be as powerful outside the context of the series/era, but it’s nevertheless one of the finest of all Godzilla films, and stands as a great work of science fiction as a result.

37 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017)

Directed by rian johnson.

There are certainly things to criticize when it comes to the most recent Star Wars movies, largely owing to the messily constructed and planned-out sequel trilogy. Yet buried within this flawed trio of films is a genuinely great sci-fi movie that itself is divisive: Star Wars: The Last Jedi . This eighth entry in the Skywalker Saga has passionate fans and vocal detractors, but that seemed inevitable, given it was directed by the guy who was behind what some people call the worst Breaking Bad episode (“Fly”) and what many call the best Breaking Bad episode (“Ozymandias”).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi brings Luke Skywalker back into the fold, taking his character in interesting directions while ultimately having him live up to his legacy by the film’s end. Other aspects of the film seem odd or disappointing at first, but all of it comes together in an interesting way by the end . It reckons with the history of Star Wars , celebrates it, and critiques it all at once, and does so while also being tremendously moving, emotionally speaking, and spectacular, from a visual standpoint.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

36 'forbidden planet' (1956), directed by fred m. wilcox.

Of all the science fiction movies made during the 1950s, Forbidden Planet is undeniably up there with the most iconic. It follows a crew of space travelers who go in search of another exploration party that's been missing for years, only to make some unusual and startling discoveries during their attempted rescue/recovery mission.

It has an undeniably distinct aesthetic that's inextricably tied to the look and feel of classic '50s sci-fi. It's also notable for having what's perhaps Leslie Nielsen 's best-known non-comedic role, given his career was rejuvenated in the 1980s thanks to starring in a range of iconic parody/spoof movies . Some may find Forbidden Planet to be a little old-fashioned and maybe even slightly cheesy by today's standards , but it's the aesthetics on offer here that might also prove charming to others.

Forbidden Planet

35 'inception' (2010), directed by christopher nolan.

Inception certainly was a cinematic highlight of 2010 , and it had some pretty tough competition that year, too. It's Christopher Nolan blending his affinity for action and science fiction in one , and making this blend go down smoothly with an engaging premise that's about performing a reverse heist within a target's subconscious, making it function well as an action/thriller movie as well as a piece of science fiction.

It's a movie that throws tons of fairly complex ideas at the viewer in rapid succession, and so if there's one criticism that can be thrown Inception's way, it's that it's a little heavy on the exposition at times. But the action-packed scenes serve well as payoffs, and the narrative does find interesting and sometimes unexpected places to go beyond the explanatory dialogue-heavy opening act.

34 'Under the Skin' (2013)

Directed by jonathan glazer.

Those who prefer their sci-fi conventional may want to steer clear of Under the Skin , or approach it very cautiously, given it's another strange, haunting, and unapologetic film directed by Jonathan Glazer . It's essentially an arthouse take on a story about an alien coming to Earth, perhaps being for the 2010s what the equally bizarre and captivating The Man Who Fell to Earth was for the 1970s.

Scarlett Johansson plays the alien at the center of Under the Skin , and much of the movie is about this life form - after taking on a human appearance - stalking and capturing various men who become prey. It offers little by way of easy answers, and much of the film is up to the interpretation of the individual viewer , for better or worse (probably more better, so long as you know roughly what you're in for).

Under the Skin

Watch on Max

33 'Avatar' (2009)

Directed by james cameron.

James Cameron might've referred to himself as the king of the world after his 1997 film Titanic swept the Oscars, but it's perhaps more accurate to call him the king of the sci-fi genre. He's made some of the biggest and most popular works of science fiction in cinematic history, with none being as successful (at least financially) as his 2009 film Avatar . Indeed, Avatar joins Titanic and its own sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water , as a movie that can claim to be the highest-grossing of its decade of release .

It recycles familiar tropes and story beats, but does so in a fantastical world and with breathtaking visual effects. Typical of Cameron, Avatar is also successful in blending genres to ensure it has mass appeal , with this movie being a sci-fi film, an action/adventure movie, and a romance all at once.

32 'Planet of the Apes' (1968)

Directed by franklin j. schaffner.

For as good as the reboot/prequel trilogy released throughout the 2010s was, it's hard to top the original Planet of the Apes film from 1968, at least when judging each movie in the series on its own merits. It's an eerie and oftentimes mysterious film, building to a fantastic conclusion that might still surprise those lucky enough to avoid knowing about it without having seen the movie.

It flips things around by having human beings be the subservient species, and forced to contend with an advanced race of apes who do indeed rule the planet they're on. It's not nearly as cheesy as you'd think (the sequels don't fare quite so well), and holds up as a compelling and entertaining sci-fi/action movie with some interesting things to say about humanity and its possible future.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Watch on Starz

31 'District 9' (2009)

Directed by neill blomkamp.

Though some are clamoring for a sequel that will probably never arrive (never say never, unless you can cowardly include a "probably" in there), District 9 still stands on its own as a great film regardless. It's part mockumentary, part action movie, and part body horror, detailing what happens to an alien ship that becomes stranded over the city of Johannesburg.

It's also packed with social commentary regarding race and how refugees are mistreated in real life, considering in this movie, it's the aliens who find themselves in the middle of a large-scale refugee crisis. It's thought-provoking, unique, exciting, and one of the best science-fiction movies of the 21st century so far, as well as one movie that demonstrated how 2009 was an unusually good year for the sci-fi genre as a whole .

30 'Stalker' (1979)

Directed by andrei tarkovsky.

One of the most acclaimed films of 1979 , Stalker is also among the best-known titles in Andrei Tarkovsky 's filmography. It follows three men who are trying to find a mysterious location known only as the Zone, as it's rumored to grant great power to anyone who can locate it. Stalker feels less focused on the narrative necessarily, as its status as an arthouse science fiction movie means it's more concerned with exploring abstract themes and providing a unique (in this case, also eerie) mood.

It unfolds in a way that's very slow, but also surprisingly absorbing . It's an intensely psychological sort of science fiction, exploring the minds of its characters more so than putting them in a series of exciting set pieces or action scenes. It's the kind of approach to sci-fi that might not be for everyone, but it is undoubtedly interesting.

29 'Moon' (2009)

Directed by duncan jones.

One of many great science-fiction movies released in 2009, Moon is about one man dealing with isolation while being the sole person at a manufacturing facility on the Moon. Things take a turn into the unexpected as he's about to return to Earth, though, throwing the film's events into an entirely new direction.

The less said about the rest of Moon , the better, but it's fair to say that it's certainly engaging and surprising in all the best ways. It's also a showcase for the talents of Sam Rockwell , given he maintains a compelling presence on-screen, even though he doesn't really have any other actual actors to appear alongside, and act with, and Moon undoubtedly solidifies Rockwell as one of the best and most underrated actors working today.

28 'Ex Machina' (2014)

Directed by alex garland.

Before taking a turn into horror by directing movies like Annihilation and Men , Alex Garland had his directorial debut with the sci-fi film Ex Machina . It's a unique look at artificial intelligence, revolving around a series of experiments in a remote location with a new, unnervingly smart robot, the creator of said technology, and a young coder who's won a competition to visit said location.

It's an eerie and engaging look at familiar science-fiction tropes and ideas , presenting things that viewers might have seen before in ways that are confined, realistic, and eye-opening. It's small-scale, personal science-fiction done right, and though it's not particularly old, it feels like the kind of movie where it's safe to say it will age well, and continue to hold up in years to come.

27 'Minority Report' (2002)

Directed by steven spielberg.

Minority Report is set in a future where surveillance has become so widespread and powerful that the crime/justice landscape has completely changed. Violent crimes can now be predicted before they even happen, leading to people being arrested and charged for crimes they didn't actually commit, but were ultimately going to commit, or so those in the business of "Precrime" say.

It's an uneasy and thought-provoking premise, and was explored in a way that ensured Minority Report ranked among the best movies of 2002 . It's getting on in years, but what it has to say still feels relevant and unnerving, and time will ultimately tell how relevant it'll continue to feel, and how unsettling its premise will feel for viewers even further in the future. Undoubtedly, it's one of the very best sci-fi/thriller movies Steven Spielberg has ever directed.

Minority Report

26 'interstellar' (2014).

While Interstellar isn't Christopher Nolan's only great science-fiction movie, it might be his most pure sci-fi effort, given Inception ' s action-heavy nature and Tenet feeling like an espionage thriller with sci-fi elements. Interstellar 's also one of his longest movies, making it a true sci-fi epic in every sense of the word.

It centers on a group of astronauts who explore space through a wormhole, as humanity is in danger on Earth and may need to find a new planet to live on. On the technical side of things, Interstellar is spectacular, with amazing visual effects and a phenomenal Hans Zimmer score . It's a long but rewarding film, and in contrast to some science-fiction, also contains a surprising amount of heartfelt - maybe even sentimental - emotion.

Halfway to Halloween: The 13 best horror films of the year (so far)

From arcadian to abigail, we're taking a look at the best horror cinema of 2024.

Clockwise L to R: The First Omen (Moris Puccio/20th Century Studios), Abigail (Universal Pictures), Immaculate (NEON), Late Night With the Devil (Shudder/IFC Films)

We’ve officially reached the magical point in the year where Halloween is finally just six months away. We’re now heading downhill towards Spooky Season, and since “Halfway to Halloween” has become an unofficial holiday among the horror faithful, it seems like a perfect time to take stock of how the genre has treated us so far this year.

In just the first four months of 2024, we’ve seen more than a dozen fantastic horror releases on both big and small screens, from stories of stop-motion (or Stopmotion , if you will) animation gone horribly wrong to Nicolas Cage battling apocalypse monsters. Each film offers something different, but together they make one thing very clear: It’s going to be another great year for horror.

So, in honor of Halfway to Halloween, here are our picks for the best horror movies to get a wide release so far this year.

13. Arcadian

Directed by Ben Brewer and written by Michael Nilon, Arcadian follows the A Quiet Place blueprint of a family trying to survive the end of the world, and does some new things with the format along the way. The story of a father (Nicolas Cage) and his two sons (Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins) who must contend with monster-ridden nights while scraping out a living on their farm, the film succeeds by rooting its story in universal and potent emotional themes, carried through by strong central performance. Then there are the monsters, which truly look and act like no other end-of-the-world beast you’ve ever seen.

12. Immaculate

Though it’s sometimes a bit hampered by an overreliance on predictable jumpscares and a plot that’s stretched thin by the end, Immaculate works as both a frenzied religious horror experience and a showcase for star and producer Sydney Sweeney. As a nun who arrives at a secluded Italian convent and then finds herself miraculously pregnant, Sweeney throws herself into this film with everything she’s got, and delivers considerable acting muscle along the way. Throw in some truly effective scares and an ending that does not flinch, and you’ve got a solid new piece of creepy nun cinema.

11. Destroy All Neighbors

Jonah Ray Rodrigues stars in this zany, gore-soaked horror-comedy as a struggling musician who’s trying to finish his misunderstood masterpiece. It’s hard enough trying to get it done when his day job is soul-sucking and his girlfriend doesn’t seem to get it, but things get worse when an obnoxious new neighbor (Alex Winter) arrives next door. What happens next is one of those things that you just have to experience to understand, a hilarious, wildly over-the-top ride of hallucinogenic, visceral fun that’ll have your jaw on the floor more than once.

10. Blackout

Writer-director Larry Fessenden is one of the brightest and best minds in the indie horror scene, and he proves it once again with this werewolf feature about a down-on-his-luck painter (Alex Hurt) who regularly transforms into a murderous beast that roams the night. As with so much of Fessenden’s work, what makes Blackout great is his ability to play gleefully with horror tropes while also inserting plenty of indie drama character work into the mix. When that mix is working, Blackout becomes a compelling and haunting drama about a man trying to atone for his own beastly nature in a monstrous world, and the inventive werewolf kills are just gravy.

9. Lisa Frankenstein

Zelda Williams and Diablo Cody’s campy ode to ’80s romance and monster movies didn’t get the warmest reception upon its release earlier this year, but I’m convinced that time is going to be kind to this one, and besides, I had a blast watching it. The story of the titular teen girl (Kathryn Newton) and the reanimated corpse (Cole Sprouse) who becomes her partner in (literal) crime and life, Lisa Frankenstein succeeds because it is unapologetically, luxuriantly dancing to its own beat, paying homage to past cinematic icons while impishly poking fun at them simultaneously. It’s a joy, and it deserves more fans.

8. All You Need Is Death

A pair of roaming amateur anthropologists (Simone Collins and Charlie Maher) search Ireland for rare and unrecorded folk songs in this chilling film, and what they find when they uncover something truly ancient amid all that lost music will change them forever. A folk-horror film rooted in the transformative power of music is a great idea, but it’s what writer-director Paul Duane does within that concept that makes All You Need Is Death special. Like a great song, it’s one of those movies that just worms its way into your head and lingers

7. The First Omen

A horror prequel that works within the parameters of its franchise while also blazing its own creepy trail, Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen is a knockout religious horror movie that goes places even The Omen did not. Following a young nun (Nell Tiger Free, fearless and ferocious) who finds herself at the center of a vast conspiracy within the Catholic church, Stevenson’s film takes the central fears of The Omen and turns them into questions not of family, but of faith, as one woman must face the sinister turn of an entire beloved institution, and fight to keep her own soul in one piece. It’s a stunner, and a great new entry in a storied franchise.

6. Out Of Darkness

A group of hunter-gatherers roam the Earth millennia ago, searching for a new life in a new land. What they find instead, in Andrew Cumming’s stunning film, is a nightmare, as they’re stalked and picked apart by something hidden in the surrounding landscape. The concept alone, following primitive humans as they face true horror, is enough to keep Out Of Darkness moving forward, but along the way it finds real emotional heft and heart, thanks in no small part to a tremendous lead performance from Safia Oakley-Green.

5. Infested

In Sébastien Vanicek’s Infested , a lone exotic spider makes its way into a French apartment building where an enterprising young man (Théo Christine) and his family and friends are trying to build a better life. Over the course of the following days, that lone spider becomes an army of deadly, relentless, constantly multiplying arachnids in a film that gives spider horror classic Arachnophobia a run for its money. What starts as a satisfyingly creepy creature feature eventually morphs into a survival horror clash for the ages, culminating in some truly jaw-dropping, brutal moments of eight-legged fury.

If you’ve seen the trailers for Abigail , you think you know this movie already. You think you’re prepared for the places this story of a group of kidnappers who unwittingly abduct a vampire girl (Alisha Weir) will go. For the first half of the movie, you’re right, and then filmmaking collective Radio Silence pushes things completely off the rails in a delightfully violent, relentless horror-comedy romp. The result is a bloody powerhouse with a great ensemble, great gore effects, and a story that’ll leave you wanting even more.

3. Late Night With The Devil

A talk show host takes the stage one Halloween night in the 1970s to try and save his show, and finds his soul in the balance as dark forces take over the set. That’s the promise of Late Night With The Devil , the throwback horror film from directors and writers Colin and Cameron Cairnes, and it definitely delivers. What ends up sticking with you most throughout this story, though, isn’t the demonic presence creeping into the story, or the production design that evokes classic 1970s TV vibes. It’s David Dastmalchian’s searing, unforgettable performance as a man just trying to keep his fortunes intact, only to find everything is slipping away.

2. Stopmotion

Aisling Franciosi stars in this chilling, uncomfortable tale as a stop-motion animator who finds herself swept up in a new idea for a film to such an extent that it becomes alienating, frightening, and ultimately dangerous. The promise of exploring the horror space through stop-motion animation is reason enough to check out Robert Morgan’s film, but Franciosi’s powerful performance propels Stopmotion beyond gimmicks and into the realm of truly harrowing emotional terror, as art and artist merge into something new, violent, and unforgettable.

1. I Saw The TV Glow

It’s been nearly two months since I first experienced Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw The TV Glow at South By Southwest, and I’m not exaggerating when I tell you hardly a day goes by when I don’t think about it in some form or another. The story of two friends (Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine) who bond over their shared love of a TV show, and the journey of transformation and discovery that follows the show’s cancellation, Schoenbrun’s film is hauntingly beautiful, full of inventive images of analog horror that’ll linger in your brain for weeks. But beyond that horror lies something more primal and more powerful, a movie about the ways in which our obsessions change us, our bonds challenge us, and our journeys to become our true selves never seem to really end. It’s a masterpiece, and it’s the best piece of horror cinema to emerge from 2024 so far. Everyone will have a chance to catch it in theaters nationwide beginning May 3.

The 20 Best Time Travel K-Dramas, Ranked

Lee do-hyun & go min-si’s sweet home roles are a reminder to watch this historical k-drama from 2021, ju ji-hoon ponders the philosophical questions posed by disney+ k-drama blood free.

  • Kim Go-eun's versatility shines through in her diverse roles, from bubbly Eun-tak in Goblin to the sinister In-joo in Little Women.
  • Despite tonal inconsistencies in Monster, Kim Go-eun's portrayal of Bok-soon is both heart-warming and intense, showcasing her acting skills.
  • In Yumi's Cells, Kim Go-eun's performance as Yu-mi balances humor and sincerity, making the K-drama a joy to watch with its relatable nature.

Since her on-screen debut in 2012, Kim Go-eun has continued to show her versatility as an actor through incredible and varied performances in both K-dramas and in movies. Born in South Korea in 1991, Kim Go-eun stumbled into the world of acting by chance, yet has not looked back since. Now over a decade into her career, Kim Go-eun has been involved in some of the best K-dramas and South Korean movies to date and does not show any signs of slowing down .

Kim Go-eun's commitment to her roles throughout the years has made her one of the hottest names in the South Korean entertainment industry as she continues to improve and challenge herself with every new project. From fan-favorite fantasy K-drama Goblin to the latest South Korean horror phenomenon Exhuma , Kim Go-eun's filmography is full of breathtaking performances that always seem to show a new side of the now veteran actress. Though with an impressive filmography to her name, here are just some of Kim Go-eun's best works to date that truly show Kim Go-eun's prowess as an actress.

Time travel is a common trope used in K-dramas to solve mysteries, add intrigue and propel love stories. Here are the best time travel K-dramas.

10 Monster (2014)

After stepping away from acting for some time to finish her studies, Kim Go-eun's second movie, Monster is a stark contrast from her first and proves just how versatile Kim Go-eun's acting skills really are. Monster sees Kim Go-eun toying the line between thriller and comedy as the quick-tempered Bok-soon, who will do anything for her younger sister, including killing the man who kidnapped her.

Despite tonal inconsistencies and the overuse of gore in Monster , Kim Go-eun anchors the film with her heart-warming yet violent portrayal of Bok-soon. Kim Go-eun makes Bok-soon a vibrant character by truly committing to each moment, and shows a deft mastery of both comic timing and intense emotion as the movie's leading character. Though still early in her career, Kim Go-eun's performance is an impressive shift from her debut while also showing the foundations of the acting skills she would soon build upon in the later works of her career.

Monster is currently not available on streaming services.

9 Cheese in the Trap (2016)

Following success on the big screen, Cheese in the Trap is Kim Go-eun's first K-drama, which would see her win her first Baeksang award for Best New Actress. Based on a webtoon of the same name, Cheese in the Trap follows university student Hong Seol (Kim Go-eun) and her relationship with senior Yoo Jung (Park Hae-jin), who is both wealthy and manipulative, yet has an interest in her. Kim Go-eun navigates Seol's difficult situations with ease to bring an iconic performance that helms this drama.

Cheese in the Trap is full of big characters and actors who would soon become big names in the K-drama world, such as Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, yet Kim Go-eun holds her own on screen. Hong Seol acts as a glue for the drama, and Kim Go-eun's performance of the university student is deeply relatable . However, compared to other works in her career, Cheese in the Trap showcases less of Kim Go-eun's outstanding abilities than other works do.

Cheese in the Trap is available to stream on Netflix.

8 Tune In For Love (2019)

Tune In For Love is a movie full of subtleties, and Kim Go-eun excels in expressing the smaller moments in Mi-soo's love affair with Jung Hae-in's Hyun-woo. Tune In For Love takes a slower pace than some of Kim Go-eun's other works, but this allows her to take her time and craft each of Mi-soo's emotions carefully, making each moment more impactful than the last . Her on-screen chemistry with co-star Jung Hae-in also flourishes in Tune In For Love , allowing the natural rise and fall of Mi-soo and Hyun-woo's relationship to soar.

Mi-soo's character progression in Tune In For Love is a further testament to Kim Go-eun's abilities as an actor, as Hyun-woo and Mi-soo continually cross paths throughout their lifetimes. The youthful energy Mi-soo once possessed slowly disappears as she yearns for more from life, with Kim Go-eun expressing the changes in Mi-soo's personality perfectly. Unlike some of Kim Go-eun's other works, there aren’t many significant events that occur in Tune In For Love . However, Kim Go-eun expresses the subtle progression of Mi-soo's life with ease .

Tune in For Love is available to stream on Netflix

Those looking for more of Lee Do-hyun and Go Min-si before Sweet Home season 3 premiers on Netflix have this period K-drama as the perfect option.

7 Coin Locker Girl (2015)

Kim Go-eun never tackles the same role twice, and her venture into the world of violent crime in 2015 thriller Coin Locker Girl is no exception. Kim Go-eun's Il-young is thrust into the world of gangs after being abandoned in a coin locker as a baby and carries out missions for her loan shark mother as she gets older. Much like many of her other roles, Coin Locker Girl sees Kim Go-eun balances many powerful emotions at the same time to concoct a performance that is a highlight of the movie.

Alongside Kim Hye-su, who plays Il-young's adoptive mother, Kim Go-eun keeps an impeccable poise that allows her to run shoulder-to-shoulder with the leading actress. The chemistry and performances by Kim Go-eun and Kim Hye-su are the best part of Coin Locker Girl , with Kim Go-eun flawlessly echoing the veteran actor in every movement. However, an overuse of violence and a lackluster second half dulls the otherwise outstanding performances in Coin Locker Girl , making it less of a standout hit than Kim Go-eun's other works .

Coin Locker Girl is currently not available on streaming services.

6 Eungyo (2011)

Han eun-gyo.

Kim Go-eun's debut performance in Jung Ji-woo's Eungyo (also known as A Muse ) saw her beat out 300 hundred actresses for the titular role of 17-year-old student Han Eun-gyo. Based on Park Bum-shin's novel of the same name, Eungyo follows the story of 70-year-old poet Lee Jeok-yo (Jung Hae-il) and the relationship he builds with the innocent yet spontaneous Eun-gyo, who becomes a muse for his latest novel before it is stolen by his assistant Seo Ji-woo (Kim Mu-yeol).

Despite a controversial premise that can be hard to watch, Kim Go-eun makes Eun-gyo bounce off the screen in a performance that depicts the carefree nature of youth, whilst delving into darker undertones that force Eun-gyo to mature and gain her own self-worth. To date, Kim Go-eun's performance in Eungyo remains her most awarded role with 8 awards and 3 nominations, with her even winning Best New Actress at the coveted Blue Dragon Awards in 2012.

Eun-gyo is currently not available on any streaming services.

5 The King: Eternal Monarch (2020)

Jeong tae-eul/luna.

2020 saw Kim Go-eun return to the small screen alongside K-drama veteran Lee Min-ho for one of the year's most highly anticipated K-dramas , The King: Eternal Monarch , written by Goblin and Descendants of the Sun writer, Kim Eun-sook. In The King: Eternal Monarch , Kim Go-eun plays a high-ranking police officer named Jeong Tae-eul and becomes embroiled with Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho), a King claiming to be from a parallel universe. Together, they navigate alternate realities.

One of the highlights of Kim Go-eun's performance in this fantasy K-drama is her ability to make Tae-eul's reactions to adverse situations seem natural. Multiple times throughout The King: Eternal Monarch Kim Go-eun showcases her superb crying skills, which ground Tae-eul's crazy circumstances firmly in reality as every tear is incredibly believable. However, despite a strong start, The King: Eternal Monarch cannot maintain its momentum, making Tae-eul's circumstances feel too repetitive and blunting Kim Go-eun's performance from shining further.

The King: Eternal Monarch is available to stream on Netflix

Blood Free star Ju Ji-hoon discusses stepping into the role of Chae-woon, working with Han Hyo-joo, and what he took away from Netflix's Kingdom.

4 Yumi’s Cells (2021-2022)

Kim Go-eun's performance in Yumi's Cells is a fresh comparison to some of her other works, but it is still just as impactful. Kim Go-eun takes the role of the titular Kim Yu-mi and returns back into the world of dating and love, hoping that her love cell will return. Yumi's Cells is a K-drama based on a webtoon of the same name that balances humor with sincerity as Yu-mi navigates the world of love and heartbreak. As the heart of the show, Kim Go-eun excels, making Yu-mi's cells' work pay off in her every expression .

Yumi's Cells isn't a complicated premise, but Kim Go-eun's performance is fraught with detail. Yumi's shy nature yet yearning for a life of love is deeply relatable and makes her forays into the world of love even more entertaining. Though Yumi's Cells mixes both live action and animation, the melodramatics of Yu-mi's cells' are never present in Kim Go-eun's performance, keeping the K-drama firmly rooted in reality and making it such a joy to watch.

Yumi's Cells is available to stream on Rakuten Viki.

3 Exhuma (2024)

Lee hwa-rim.

Once again, Kim Go-eun's character-driven performances have found her in the spotlight, as her performance as the shaman Lee Hwa-rim in South Korean horror Exhuma has gripped audiences globally, and become South Korea's biggest movie of the year so far. It has also seen Kim Go-eun win Best Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards this year, with her fierce commitment to her role creating an incredible on-screen performance that echoes her years of experience in the acting world .

Kim Go-eun is at her best in Exhuma when Lee Hwa-rim is performing shamanic rituals. The first ritual in particular is an incredible highlight, as Kim Go-eun deftly dances around the screen with a commanding presence that is hard to look away from as the intensity builds to a final climax. However, although Exhuma is a great horror that allows Kim Go-eun to demonstrate a new side to her acting skills , as a movie led by narrative rather than character, Lee Hwa-rim's character feels more underexplored.

Exhuma is currently showing in selected cinemas.

2 Goblin (2016-2017)

Goblin (also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God ) is a K-drama classic that is not to be missed, and Kim Go-eun is a key reason why. Kim Go-eun's portrayal of the optimistic and bubbly Ji Eun-tak is infectious, making every moment she is on-screen a delight to watch, and her chemistry with her fellow co-stars Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook seem effortless. Kim Go-eun's comedic talents also shine throughout Goblin , as some of the most awkward moments between Eun-tak and Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) are easily the funniest thanks to Kim Go-eun's expressive performance.

Ji Eun-tak's darkest moments are just as vibrant as her brightest thanks to Kim Go-eun's detailed performances. Eun-tak's youthful energy never ceases, but peppered through tears, her unceasing optimism makes Goblin 's most emotional moments hit even harder. Kim Go-eun never shies away from any scene , and allows Ji Eun-tak's true nature to flourish under any circumstances, making Goblin such an incredible piece of work to watch.

Goblin is available to stream on Netflix.

1 Little Women (2022)

Throughout her career, Kim Go-eun has proven that she is a master at character acting, and can easily blend into any environment and excel. However, her performance in Little Women , South Korea’s twist on the Louisa May Alcott novel of the same name, showcases Kim Go-eun’s acting ability at its best and demonstrates how much her abilities have grown since her debut .

From Oh In-joo’s bumbling beginnings to her explosive downfall, Kim Go-eun’s portrayal of the oldest and most morally ambiguous Oh sister is breathtaking. One glance is all that is needed to read a multitude of emotions, and Kim Go-eun’s ability to switch between emotions feels so natural that Oh In-joo feels like an integral yet sinister part of the mystery that encapsulates Little Women . Even Oh In-joo’s smallest moments are incredibly captivating , and the build to In-joo’s biggest outbursts feels natural, solidifying Little Women as Kim Go-eun ’s best work to date.

Little Women is available to stream on Netflix.
