Thank you Shawna for this TA information. I just now found it for the first time!

You are welcome, Pam!

This is great information Shawna, thanks?!

You’re very welcome, Melinda!

Outstanding!! wish I had seen this sooner. I just rented a car for 3 weeks from Alamo in Ft Lauderdale. I showed the counter attendant my CLIA card and asked for a discount, which I did not get.

Why wouldn’t they accept it? Was it because it wasn’t an IATAN card? I have a CLIA card as well. Marriot Hotel Excellence allows a CLIA card for their FAMtastic rates

This is great information and it is very helpful. Thank you for all your hard work. I would appreciate if you could send me an email have a few questions hoping you can help me with. Thanks in advance.

Do you know if Radisson or other hotels accept CLIA card, if we don’t yet have an IATAN card?

Hi Samantha! Per their current online registration form, they accept IATA/ARC/TIDS/CLIA/TRUE.

Thank you for this update!

Shawna, I dont sell enough to qualify for an IATA card myself. Can I use the agency’s number instead or does it have to be person specific to register for these discounts? Thanks so much

Hi Joan! Thank you for your question! These discounts typically require the agent to show their personal IATA card at the location.

i just called Sea World in San Antonio and they did not know anything about the 50% off. Do you konw if it is park or city specific? I have an IATA card.

Thanks. Tim

Our team members that have used this discount in the past simply showed their IATA card at the gate. We’ll look into this to see if the deal is no longer being offered!

**Centrav cannot guarantee availability or access to discounts mentioned in this post.

Thank you! I love the Centrav posts!

Thank you, Nanci!

Thank you for the wonderful post.

Do you happen to know if I can apply for an IATAN card even if I do not work for a travel company?

Thank you, Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,

Thank you for your comment! In order to be eligible for an IATA/IATAN card, an agent must work for an IATA-accredited travel agency.

Check out this post for more info: https://resources.centrav.com/get-iata-card/

Thanks very much

Thank you so much for this!

You are welcome!

Hi Shawna, I am an admin for a nationally touring music band. I am interested in learning how to get travel agent discounts on mostly flights and hotel for the band. Do I need to become a travel agent for that? If you could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Hi Cyndee! We can send you more detailed information shortly!

Thank you for this information.

You’re welcome, Marilyn!

Hello, thank you for this guide. Do you know if travel agents are able to get discounts with baggage for flights ?

I am not aware of travel agent discounts for luggage, however, some private airfares offer extra luggage! This is totally dependent on the airline, routing, etc.

200+ Travel Agent Rates in 2024 [+PDF Download]

One of the biggest perks of becoming a travel agent is the wealth of travel experiences you have access to. As a travel agent, if you take vendor training, or reach a supplier's sales threshold you unlock travel agent rates for personal travel, special perks, amenities, and access to FAM (familiarization trips) .

The career outlook for a travel is great , plus it's an amazing way to see the world! (And if you still think travel agents don't exist, definitely read the previous link as you may be surprised that travel agencies book a larger share of travel than online travel agencies in the US!)

But the big question is, what are these discounted travel agent rates, and how do travel agents access them? We've got it all together for you in one handy dandy little download.

HAR's Travel Agent Rate PDF download includes details on 200+ supplier discounts! The download includes information on travel agent rates, special discounts, and special reward programs — all exclusive to travel agents (and maybe your friend or family :) ).

Not only that, but the download lists eligibility details and links to the travel advisor portal so you can register your travel agency. You can view the full PDF below!

But of course, this article is so much more than a travel agent rates download!

We'll cover:

  • what different kinds of travel agent discounts are out there,
  • how to qualify a supplier's travel agent loyalty or reward program,
  • and elaborate on some of the top travel agent hotel discounts

  • How to Become a Travel Agent (if You’re Not One Already)

First question on the docket: Do travel agents get discounts? They sure do, my friend!

Although, as we'll discuss further, there is a lot more nuance to things than just a yes or no when it comes to if travel agents get discounts. Keep on reading because we'll go over which travel agents get discounts (every supplier is going to have different parameters) and what types of travel advisors can get discounts for.

Different Types of Travel Agent Rates & Incentives

Every supplier is going to have a different kind of travel agent rate or loyalty program. Some are complicated. Some are simple.

Here’s what you can generally expect in terms of travel agent discount programs:

  • Point Systems: Depending on the vendor, point systems offer you just that — a certain number of points per night booked. Points allotted will likely vary by tier of property. If you book a luxury property, you’ll get more points. Travel agent point systems, while somewhat complicated, are great for flexibility. It levels the playing field and operates like an amped-up client-facing rewards program.
  • Cash Incentives: Some vendors will offer travel agents hard cash for bookings (e.g. you get $25 for every room night booked). This isn't a rate or discount, but it's definitely an incentive!
  • Straight-up Flat Discounts: Some travel agent discounts are simple—you get a certain percentage off your stay. Easy peasy.
  • Special Reduced Rates: Because you’re a travel agent (or because you love to travel), you know that suppliers have peak seasons, different classes of properties, rooms, etc. Many suppliers will issue reduced rates exclusive to travel agents, outlining what the cost is for a different room category, itinerary, sailing date, etc.
  • Traveling for Free: Free travel is not the norm. There are circumstances travel agents may get a free cruise, a free theme park ticket, or free nights at a resort (etc.). This typically happens after a travel agent completes a vendor’s training program or if you're a top sales person of that supplier/brand.
  • Group Travel Rates : I’m not going to go deep into group rates, since this is something that (believe it or not) is typically offered in addition to travel agent rates. If you book a certain number of people on a trip or cruise (or a certain number of nights stay) you get a free credit you can use for yourself or for a client. (e.g. for Globus brands, you can receive travel agent discounts ranging from 25% - 100% depending on itinerary, group size, and when you book.)
  • Familiarization (FAM) Trips: In my mind, FAM trips are more of a travel agent perk than a travel agent discount or rate. FAMs are free or deeply discounted trips offered to travel agents (or travel professionals) to educate them about a product or destination. Here's a great explainer of FAM trips .

Suppliers want to keep travel agents happy! Many will have some combination of these perks above.

8 Things You Need to Know About Travel Agent Rates & Discounts

Here are a few things to know about what to expect when you're shopping for travel agent discounts:

1. You Need an Accreditation Number to Get travel agent Discounts

You need to be a travel agent to access travel agent rates and discounts. What makes someone a travel agent? An accreditation number . . . whether you get your own or align with a host agency .

2. Travel Agent Discounts are for Active Travel Agents

Beyond having an accreditation number, you need to sell travel. I know this may seem incredibly obvious, but oftentimes vendors will only offer travel agent rates or perks after you reach a certain sales threshold.

3. A Niche Will Help You Get More Travel Agent Bonuses & Rates (Here’s Why)

Part of developing a travel agent niche is getting a pulse on who your preferred suppliers are. When you begin to get a handle on what suppliers you love, you can focus your time and energies on learning those suppliers inside out.

This will help you establish the deep product knowledge and supplier relationships required to be a successful seller. In turn, you'll have access to more travel agent discounts and rewards as your sales increase.

4. You Often Need to Complete a Vendor Certification to Get a Discount

If you’re completely new, you’re not going to have a long scroll of past sales to help you access travel agent rates. But don’t worry. Many suppliers offer special rates, FAMs, or even free trips once you complete their training programs.

You'll want to make sure you stay current on supplier certifications so you can keep up with their updates and offer your clients the most recent info. Suppliers want you to love their brands and they know you gotta experience it yourself to love it!

5. Rules Most Likely Apply

Travel agent discounts are often saddled with long terms and conditions and/or fine print. This fine print may be peppered with info like blackout dates or that rates are subject to change (without asking for your permission). Unsurprisingly, travel agent rates are non-commissionable.

6. Travel Agent Rates and Programs can Change

Yep. They can and do. So when you read about specific travel agent discounts below, be sure you always check directly with your supplier/ BDM (Business Development Manager) for the most updated travel agent discount policy!

7. Q: If You Book Under a Host agency, Will You Get Your Discount?

Yes. When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

An exception is Disney. For Earmarked Disney agencies (Disney's top selling agency program), it's the accrediting agency that will receive the allotted theme park tickets and travel agent rates to distribute among their agents. So ask your agency how that works if you want to get in it. That said, there are still incentives for solo Disney advisors who complete the College of Disney Knowledge! (Just check out the download !)

8. If you get bonuses, you may need to pay taxes on it

Any point system that can be exchanged for cash may be subject to taxes if you earn more than $600 in bonuses. Don’t ask me. Ask your accountant and make sure you know the tax implications of points you cash in.

Travel Agent Rates & Discounts that Will Make Your Brain Explode 🤯

Let's be honest with ourselves, this is probably why you're here for! To find more information on the travel agent rates, click on the link in the cell.

Also, things change. While we update this annually, check directly with the supplier for the most current travel agent rates and discounts.

Questions to Ask About Travel Agent Rates

You'll likely have questions about a supplier's travel agent rates. One thing to stress is that only asking about a supplier's discounts for travel agents is... well, it's tacky. Bottom line: Your first communication with a vendor should not be about their travel agent rates.

Your first communication with a vendor should not be about their travel agent rates.

These rates are for travel pros who are serious about their trade and want to increase sales. Make the effort to educate yourself on the product, let your BDM (business development manager) know your plan to help increase your sales for their product, and THEN you can ask about the travel agent rates.

If you’re really wanting to compare different rates and programs, here are a few questions you to think about, some of which are in the download above!

  • What travel accreditations are accepted? (TRUE may not be accepted everywhere)
  • Are there companion benefits?
  • Do you need to complete supplier education to secure the rate? If so, how often do I need to renew or recertify (if at all)?
  • Are there other eligibility requirements?
  • What's the sales threshold to attain travel agent rates or benefits?
  • Does belonging to a host agency impact my benefits?
  • What are typical blackout dates or seasons?
  • How long do I have to redeem my travel agent benefits (if it’s a point system)? When do they expire?
  • How do I request or access these benefits?

I'm going to do a deeper dive into a few travel agent hotel rates. There are a zillion different properties so I'm including just a few here. They offer a good idea of what kind of rates travel agents can expect from hotels.

You may be able to find better travel agents rates if you book the hotel through a tour operator.

Keep in mind that these hotel programs listed below are hotel-direct. Advisors seeking discounted hotel rates will need to book them directly through the hotel (rather than booking via a tour operator).

Another thing to note is that hotels with education programs typically will offer the best travel rates (above a standard travel agent rate).

(International Hotel Group) IHG Travel Agent Rates

IHG is linked and included in our download above . Yay! IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate to travel agents. Not to0 shabs!

Marriott Travel Agent Rates

Marriott acquired Starwood in 2015. So if you're looking for Starwood's travel agent rates, look no further than Marriott. Marriott has two different types of travel agent rates. Here's the rundown:

1. Marriott Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's travel agent rate is their blanket travel agent rate program which isavailable to any accredited travel agent with a valid IATA, ARC, CLIA or TIDS accreditation number . It's worth noting that Marriott does not accept TRUE number s.

The travel agent rate varies depending on availability, hotel category, and season. Marriott's travel agent discounts run up to 50% , but you can typically expect less. (At the time of writing this, the discounts ranged from 10-15% when I searched my hometown.)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability).

Here's how to take advantage of Marriott's travel agent rate offers:

Marriott Travel Agent Programs

2. Search Marriott's travel agent rates here (Main menu>Promotions>Travel Agent Rate Search).

3. Log in/register to make a booking!

2. Marriott's Fam-Tastic Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's Fam-Tastic program is designed less for personal leisure and more to provide an opportunity for agents to familiarize themselves with properties (hence the name).

For Marriott's Fam-tastic program, advisors can reserve one room for four nights maximum.

This program is only available to Marriott's preferred travel agencies . You can visit host profiles and drop them a note in the Q&A section to ask if they are a preferred Marriott agency.

Question and answer section on host agency profile

Marriott's FAM-tastic rate offers deeper discounts than their standard travel agent rate but with more requirements. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a standard travel agent rate, other requirements include:

  • Marriott Bonvoy membership
  • Complete Core Hotel Excellence! (HE!) classes
  • Fulfill HE! continuing credits every year
  • Have an updated Marriott International (MI) Partner Privileges profile

Travel Agent Airline Discounts

I'm going to take a deep dive into travel agent airline discounts. Why? Travel agent airline discounts are more complicated to access for a smaller reward .

Here's why . . .

These travel agent airline rates are typically referred to as "AD50" or "AD75," signifying 50%-75% airline discounts for travel agents. At first, this seems like an amazing discount.

But as you’ve probably guessed, travel agents do not get 50-75% off their airline tickets. Otherwise, so many people would want to become a travel agent that our website would break :)

Without going too deep into the weeds, here's why these airline discounts can seem misleading at first.

Airlines break seats down into many different fare classes . All these fare classes have different pricing and rules attached to them. Among other things, the fare classes help the airline understand if you paid full fare or a discounted rate, if you’re in first class/business class/economy class, if you’re doing one way or round trip, and lots of other details.

Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

When it comes to travel agent airline discounts, the AD50 and AD75 discounts apply only to Y-fare class seats, which are full-fare economy seats. Essentially, they’re the most expensive economy-class tickets possible. Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

Not only are AD50 and AD75 discounts often more expensive than other economy tickets available, but there are also more hoops to jump through to access them. Airlines that offer these flight discounts will often have stringent eligibility requirements and detailed terms and conditions required to even request them.

According to seasoned corporate travel advisor and owner of Pioneer Travel, Mike Edic, "By the time you figure out the 'discounted' price, you can still purchase a real ticket for a lot less." Edic elaborated that these rates are seldom cheaper unless it's a last-minute booking (where all that remains are those pricey, full-fare Y-class seats).

How much does a travel agent cost?

Do travel agents get discounts on flights, how can a travel agent help me, smart money move: book with the right credit card, how do i find a good travel agent.

With a few keystrokes, you can find cheap travel deals on the web. But travel agents can do that and more.

Often, travel agents receive deals directly from hotels and tour operators that you may not have access to. They also have contacts with resorts and hotels, so they can bargain for better deals. But just how much do travel agents cost? Some people assume that travel agents are expensive, which may keep them from using their services. However, that's not necessarily true.

Regardless if you go with a travel agent or plan on your own, it can be a smart money move to book with a credit card thats earns rewards on your bookings and helps you avoid foreign transaction fees if you end up traveling abroad.

The cost of using a travel agent is generally marginal, and often, they won't charge you at all. Much of their money comes from commissions the hotels and wholesalers pay them. Before you decide to book with a travel agent, inquire whether or not they charge fees.

Also, if you’ve booked a trip with a travel agent and for whatever reason need to cancel, they might be able to help get the refund more directly.

» Learn more: How to become a travel agent

Generally not, and especially not for short distances. For the most part, any discount you'd get from using a travel agent would be for a combined package. Still, it never hurts to ask if your travel agent can get you a deal on your flight.

If you're traveling internationally — especially to a country you've never visited — a travel agent can be a useful resource in helping you plan your trip. They can manage all of your booking needs, which can be easier than juggling a long itinerary that includes flights, hotels and excursions on your own.

Group travel is another common situation that can benefit from an agent's assistance. Coordinating bookings across multiple parties can get confusing. A travel agent can keep things organized, negotiate with services and personally work out any complications that may arise. Rather than trying to reserve rooms in the same hotels and seats on the same flights with multiple credit cards and names, let a travel agent do that work.

Travel agents can also be helpful by providing destination advice. Many specialize in particular destinations and can offer insight as to how you should structure your visit. Agents can direct you to the services, facilities and entertainment that best align with your interests and needs.

Whether you decide to use a travel agent to book your trip (i.e. flights, accommodations, excursions, cruises, car rentals, etc.) or plan the whole trip on your own, consider what credit card makes the most sense for your vacation.

If you're going abroad, use a card that waives foreign transaction fees so that you can avoid those fees. Also consider credit cards that include complimentary travel insurance so that you can be protected on your trip if things go awry.

Here is a sampling of cards that include travel insurance and also waive foreign transaction fees. These cards also earn rewards on travel, which you can redeem in various ways.

Do Travel Agents Get Discounts On Flights? (Explained)

One frequently asked question is whether booking a flight with a travel agent or online is cheaper. The most challenging aspect of planning a trip is sticking to a budget, which means finding more affordable flights.

Table of Contents

Here’s whether travel agents get discounts on flights

Yes, travel agents get discounts on flights. Travel agents establish and maintain relationships with air travel and have specific tactics and methods of obtaining low-cost tickets, e.g., consolidation fares.

Let us take a look at how they go about it.

travel-agents-discount-on-flights

How do travel agents get a better discount on flights?

Travel agents understand how to maneuver and employ techniques that result in airline savings. The most significant factor that travel agents consider is developing relationships with airlines to obtain lower airfare prices.

Travel agents have access to the information necessary to acquire better deals. They get a lot of their information from the same sites everyone uses. Furthermore, they receive daily discounts via e-mails and fax that are not usually available on the Internet.

They get rebates on flights and discounts on flight rates and can easily upgrade from one class to another.

Here is how they get discounts

Booking consolidator rates

These cheaper seats on less popular flights allow travel agencies to get fantastic discounts. They are a reliable means to sell a percentage of fares, negotiate annual contracts, set revenue targets, and closely regulate sales via a particular booking class.

The fares are frequently referred to as “private” or “bulk” fares. When consulting with a travel agent, an established travel agency is your best choice for finding a consolidator airline fare.

Time to book flights

Searching for flights at the beginning of the week will result in higher savings. This is because, at the beginning of the week, fares are primarily regulated by algorithms. Humans influence sales in specific directions.

Travel agents suggest that buying trends can lead to flash sales at the start of the week. This time is your greatest bet for finding lower-priced tickets.

The “Open Jaw” strategy

Travel agents use this booking strategy that takes advantage of the fact that airlines periodically discount routes with stops over direct flights—for example, a flight from New York to San Francisco.

The open jaw technique would involve routing yourself from New York to San Francisco to Los Angeles but leaving the San Francisco to Los Angeles portion unused. This strategy may not work for the most cautious travelers.

If you employ this method in the middle of an itinerary, the sequential legs after the unused trip may be canceled by the airline.

Searching the airline websites directly

Travel agents know that airlines occasionally offer connecting flights via a codeshare agreement that does not appear while searching on flight comparison websites. Therefore, they buy multi-carrier or interline tickets that airlines will not sell on other flight comparison websites.

However, those interline tickets can only be purchased through a reputable full-service travel agency.

Book in advance

The ideal time to buy summer flight tickets is 3-4 weeks before the day you want to travel. Beyond that, prices are likely to be higher. Travel agents anticipate increased domestic round-trip flight rates due to regular seasonal demand.

Prices will rise through the summer period before beginning to dip during the winter season. As a general travel agent rule, it is always advisable to start watching pricing early to secure a decent offer.

Travel package discounts

Travel agents know the discounts that come with complete booking packages. They are known for slipping huge discounts into all-inclusive packages. This is commonly seen in hotels.

The same applies to air travel. If you book lodging, car hire, and flight together, you are likely to pay at a discounted rate than a person who booked all three separately.

Agreements with airlines

Some travel agencies have contracts with airlines and therefore buy the airline’s flights in bulk at reduced prices. The agents sell these flights to customers at lower prices than regular airfare. Travel agents also have access to coupons and codes that also offer tickets at low prices.

Connections with discount airlines

Most travel agents are well connected with airlines that offer discounts. Therefore, it is easier for them to earn deals on airfare.

Airline specials

Travel agents know when airlines offer specials because they constantly browse airline websites for the best offers. Specials are provided mainly as a last-minute deal to sell any leftover seats. Specials are way cheaper than standard flight rates.

Price alerts

Travel agents establish a price alert to be notified when the price of a ticket rises or falls. Ticket prices can change daily, and even a slight decrease might result in significant discounts, especially if you need to purchase a ticket for every family member.

Booking two-one way tickets

Rather than booking a return ticket, travel agents book two cheaper one-way tickets that offer even better route options.

Weighing all costs

Travel agents understand that the base price of a ticket rarely covers the entire cost of flying. Therefore, they go out of their way to find the best overall value in terms of ticket costs.

They thoroughly investigate add-ons such as baggage fees, overweight charges, WiFi, and other options. Costs are also significant to travel agents, especially regarding “use it or lose it” tickets.

If you miss a trip, need to rearrange your flight, or cancel a leg of your vacation, restrictions might rapidly become prohibitively expensive. They pay close attention to notes regarding upgrading using frequent flier miles because they may not always be able to use particular fare classes or even pay to upgrade to another fare class.

Searching for alternative airlines

Travel agents save hundreds of dollars by traveling through a different airport – even if that airport is in another nation.

Other cities may have a few airports within a few hours’ drive that provide lower-cost flights. To discover the cheapest fare, travel agents consider all available options, including the cost of parking, gas, and possibly a rental car.

In summary, travel agents get discounts on flights by having connections with airlines, having better access to information not commonly available on the internet, and booking in advance.

In addition, travel agents can buy tickets in bulk, resulting in discounted prices. Booking at the start of the week and in advance are also some of the ways travel agents get discounts on flights.

With discounts on airfare , hotels , car rentals , tours and activities , and even cruises , you can enjoy substantial savings on every aspect of your trip. These discounts can make a big difference, especially for those traveling on a tight budget.

Moreover, travel agent discounts provide access to exclusive deals that are not advertised to the general public. These deals can include upgrades , freebies , or even complimentary services that enhance your travel experience. By taking advantage of these exclusive offers, you can enjoy a more luxurious trip without breaking the bank.

In addition to cost savings and exclusive deals, travel agent discounts also come with the added benefit of personalized service . When you work with a travel agent, they will take the time to understand your preferences, budget, and travel goals. They can then tailor their recommendations to suit your needs, ensuring that you have a personalized and memorable travel experience.

To maximize your savings with travel agent discounts, it is important to follow a few key tips. Firstly, find a reputable travel agent who has a proven track record of providing excellent service and delivering on their promises. This will ensure that you are working with a professional who can help you secure the best deals.

Secondly, research and compare prices before making any bookings. While travel agent discounts can offer significant savings, it is always a good idea to compare prices across multiple platforms to ensure you are getting the best possible deal.

Being flexible with your travel dates can also help you secure better discounts. By avoiding peak travel periods and considering alternative dates, you may be able to take advantage of lower rates and more availability.

Don’t forget to take advantage of loyalty programs offered by airlines, hotels, and car rental companies. These programs can provide additional discounts and perks that can further enhance your savings.

Lastly, consider bundling and packaging your travel arrangements. Many travel agents offer bundle deals that include flights, accommodation, and activities at a discounted rate. By bundling these services together, you can save both time and money.

When booking with travel agent discounts, it is important to keep a few tips in mind. Plan ahead to ensure availability and to secure the best deals. Take the time to read the fine print of any offers or promotions to fully understand the terms and conditions.

Communicate your budget and preferences clearly to your travel agent. This will help them tailor their recommendations to suit your needs and ensure that you get the most value out of your discounts.

Lastly, provide feedback and reviews after your trip. This not only helps future travelers but also allows travel agents to continually improve their services and offer even better discounts in the future.

In conclusion, travel agent discounts are a valuable tool for saving money and enhancing your travel experience. By partnering with a reputable travel agent and following the tips outlined in this article, you can unlock a world of exclusive deals and cost-saving opportunities. So, don’t miss out on the benefits of travel agent discounts – start planning your next vacation today!

20 Year Anniversary

Travel Agent Discounts

Charlotte started her life-long career within the travel industry in the late 1980s when she founded the popular travel agency, “Flight Ticket” (Flygbiljetten in Swedish).

Over the years, Charlotte’s has worked as a Station Manager at GOT airport (Landvetter/Göteborg), Call Center Manager, E-commerce Manager and as Department Manager for Swedish airline Malmö Aviation’s (now BRA) in-house travel department.

Charlotte’s experiences from managing the airline’s staff travel department led to her acknowledging all the amazing discounts available to Airline Staff. And so, in 2008, she launched the popular website Airline Staff Rates.

With the launch of Travel Agent Discounts, Charlotte is back where she once began – her love for travel and for sharing inspiring destinations. And now, with her new venture launched, Charlotte is entirely focused on helping Travel Agents enjoy amazing hotel discounts around the world.

While you're planning your next trip, think about where you're going and what you'll be doing. Once you have that, it'll be easier to choose which policy works best for your trip.

What does a flight insurance policy cover?

AirCare Flight Insurance has a variety of benefits including emergency travel assistance, 24/7/365. Some common flight coverages are:

  • Travel to get medical care
  • Trip Cancellation because you changed your mind

For more information, please check your policy.

Is travel or trip insurance worth the cost?

Most airlines have loyalty programs, many of which are free to join. These programs can help you score free or discounted flights and other money-saving perks.

While the best airline loyalty program for you will depend on the airlines that service your closest airport, if you live near a major airport and have your choice of airlines, it could be worth sticking to one that provides the best perks for your loyalty.

GOBankingRates spoke to travel experts to get their picks for the best airline loyalty programs to join if you want to save on flights and more.

American Airlines AAdvantage

Aaron Sutherland, travel expert and founder of Jetsetter Lifestyle , believes that American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program is one of the best airline loyalty programs available.

“Unlike some competitors, American Airlines hasn’t fully embraced dynamic pricing, meaning there are still incredible sweet spots for redeeming miles at a fraction of the cash price,” he said. “This is particularly true for business class travel to far-flung destinations, where savings can easily reach thousands of dollars.”

Hans Mast, travel advisor at Golden Rule Travel , is also a fan of the program.

“American AAdvantage is currently by far the most lucrative frequent flyer program,” he said. “I regularly fly my whole family from Wichita, Kansas, to Philadelphia to visit my in-laws for 9,000 miles per person one-way on American. Southwest and United will typically be more like 15,000 and Delta will be 20,000.”

Delta SkyMiles

Dana Yao , a frequent traveler and travel blogger, counts Delta SkyMiles among her favorite loyalty programs.

“Delta’s SkyMiles program stands out for its flexibility and extensive network of airline partners,” she said. “One of the key benefits is the ability to redeem miles for flights not only on Delta but also on its partner airlines, offering travelers a wide range of destination options. Additionally, Delta frequently offers promotions and bonus miles opportunities, allowing members to maximize their earnings and savings.”

Tim White, founder of the travel hacks site Milepro , has personally saved big through the SkyMiles program.

“Over the years, this program has saved me money by providing free flights and upgrades, allowing me to travel more frequently without significantly impacting my budget,” he said. “Additionally, the program offers perks like priority boarding and free checked bags, enhancing my overall travel experience while saving me additional costs.”

United MileagePlus

Yao also utilizes United MileagePlus for savings on flights.

“United’s MileagePlus program is praised for its extensive route network and diverse redemption options,” she said. “Members can earn miles not only through flights, but also through co-branded credit cards and partner purchases. United frequently offers discounted award flights and has a robust alliance network, making it easier for travelers to earn and redeem miles globally.”

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Pierce Hogan, owner of Varied Lands , a travel guide and resource site, prefers the Southwest Rapid Rewards program.

“What makes this program special is its simplicity and the lack of blackout dates, meaning I can redeem my points for any available flight,” he said. “This flexibility has allowed me to book last-minute trips without worrying about inflated costs, which is perfect for my often spontaneous travel plans. I’ve used my points to get free flights for both personal and business travel, significantly reducing my overall travel expenses.

“Additionally, the Companion Pass benefit, which allows a designated person to fly with me for free, has been a huge money saver and a fantastic perk,” Hogan added. “The program also offers generous earning rates on flights and through their partner credit card, helping me accumulate points quickly.”

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.
