The Best Luggage Tags

No matter what kind of bag you carry on your travels, a luggage tag will help you identify it quickly and get it back should it go astray.

A good luggage tag will be strong enough to survive airline baggage tossers and distinctive enough to stand out in a sea of black suitcases. We chose several that combine toughness and visual flair and that suit a wide range of budgets and styles.

All the luggage tags we selected should stay put through multiple adventures and be recognizable at a glance. But we also have options for a range of personal styles and travel needs.

We have picks that will either shield your contact information from view or display it openly, that are brightly colored or muted, and that hold a business card or let you write in your information. We also looked at what electronic smart luggage tags can and can’t do —and why most people are better off skipping them.

The research

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

Strong and easy to see.

Rugged silicone and a metal cable mean this tag (which comes two to a pack) may well outlive your luggage. The brightly colored case displays its owner’s name but keeps other personal information out of sight.

Buying Options

Get this if: You travel a lot and want a hard-wearing tag with easy-to-spot vivid colors that also keeps contact information—except for your name—under wraps.

Why it's great: The Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag has everything we’re looking for in a basic luggage tag. It is simple and inexpensive, and thanks to its tough materials and strong construction it will likely last as long (or maybe even longer) than your luggage. The silicone body seems nearly indestructible and is available in six bright colors as well as black and gray (you get two tags per pack). While other tags also feature metal cables, this tag has a metal grommet to keep the cable from eventually wearing through the silicone case.

A narrow window in the silicone lets only your name be visible—your address and contact information isn’t flashed to your fellow passengers.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: To fully access the info card, you have to unscrew and remove the metal strap. This lets the card slide out of the case. Most luggage tags we tested secure their info card in this way. It’s not a difficult or time-consuming process, but it is an extra step compared with tags that display all of your information openly. Still, for someone who wants to keep their contact information out of view, the extra step is worth it. On one of our samples, the metal grommet was loose, but on our second set they were fine.

Famavala 2x Luggage Tags

Stylish and reasonably rugged.

The plastic “leather” body of these tags is almost as strong as silicone and keeps your personal information out of view. If you prefer distinctive patterns over neon-bright colors, these are a good choice.

Get this if: You want tags that are tough like the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag and also keep your contact information shielded from casual passers-by, but you find the Ovener’s colors just too bright.

Why it's great: The Famavala 2x Luggage Tags are almost as tough as the Ovener, but their synthetic-leather bodies come in a range of decorative patterns instead of solid colors. The four sets of designs incorporate elements of old maps, space scenes, and psychedelic florals. As with the Ovener, each tag has a metal cable that is unlikely to break or wear out. But while the Ovener’s cable passes through a metal grommet, this tag’s cable passes through its body directly and could wear through it over time.

All your info is behind a small magnetically secured flap, hidden from casual view. Unlike the Ovener, the Famavala hides your name as well as your other personal information. You can view that information without taking apart the tag, however. If you’re looking for something distinctive and that will last, but isn’t so Day-Glo as the Ovener, this is a great option.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Though more ornate than the Ovener, these tags are not quite as noticeable from a distance. The metal cable could conceivably, if yanked hard enough, rip right through the narrowest part of the plastic body.

CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags

All-metal toughness.

These metal luggage tags are as tough as tags made of silicone and hide everything but your name. They are more likely to scratch either paint or people, though.

Get this if: You’re metal, or you want your luggage tag to be. Like the Ovener, these tags hide your personal information (except for your name) from view and are tough enough to stand up to years of wear and tear.

Why it's great: Generally speaking, we’re not big fans of metal luggage tags. Their hard edges can catch on fabric and could scratch paint or people. (These aren’t necessarily likely scenarios, just more likely than with our picks made of silicone or plastic.) If you do opt for metal tags, we suggest going with CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags . Each has an aluminum alloy body and a stainless steel cable that feels very secure. They offer a nearly identical feel and design as metal tags that cost several times more.

This tag comes in sets of either two or five tags (all the same color) and a set of seven tags (each a different color). It’s offered in a variety of hues, including bright options for visibility on the luggage carousel as well as ones that would blend into their surroundings.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like the Ovener tag, this tag forces you to unscrew the strap’s clasp and take apart the tag to read the card inside. This isn’t some huge, laborious task, but it does take a few steps.

Art of Travel Neoprene Designer Luggage Tags

A whimsical tag.

This simple, stretchy tag comes in nine designs by several artists and can add some beauty and playfulness to your luggage ID.

Get this if: You find other tags boring and want something artsy to decorate your luggage. Also, if you prefer a tag that shows your information at a glance, instead of hiding it behind a cover.

Why it's great: The Art of Travel Designer Luggage Tags are probably the most lively looking luggage tags we tested. Nine designs are available from six artists in a variety of styles. You wrap the single-piece neoprene tag around the suitcase handle (or elsewhere) and tuck the label end through the loop end, pulling it taut. The neoprene is unlikely to tear, and the edges are well-stitched. It might not hold up for as long as our silicone or metal picks, but it should still last for several years of travel.

The information portion is fairly simple--it’s just a small, clear-plastic card in a clear-plastic pocket that’s always visible. Because the card, too, is clear, you can still see the design through the card. Also, the card seems to stick slightly to its holder, which makes it stay more securely.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Unlike our other picks, this one doesn’t hide your personal information. But as the supplied info card is clear plastic, the words can be hard to distinguish from the background pattern at a distance, even though your info isn’t hidden. There’s also no closure to the card pocket, although we didn’t have issues with the card falling out. The loop-through design feels fairly secure, though not as secure as a screw-on metal cable or a buckled strap.

Styles: about nine different designs from about half a dozen artists (designs and artists can change periodically)

We think a luggage tag containing a card with information printed on it is the best option for most travelers. There are, however, also a variety of smart luggage tags—that is, electronic devices meant to help you locate your luggage when it’s lost. After surveying the different types of smart tags out there, though, we didn’t find any that work well enough for us to recommend them for regular use on your luggage.

A common type of smart tag uses Bluetooth tracking to locate your luggage. In our research, we found the best Bluetooth trackers are the Apple AirTag (for iOS users) and the Tile system (for Android users). We also liked the Tile Slim and the Tile Sticker. These small, battery-powered devices pair with your phone. When the tracker gets far enough from your phone to break the connection, the Find My or Tile app notes where you were when it lost contact—the idea being that this is the “last seen” location. If you go back to where the phone last “saw” the tracker, hopefully you’ll be able to actually retrieve the tracker (and whatever it’s attached to).

The advantage of the AirTag over the Tile—as well as over any smart luggage tag—comes in what happens next. You can track it via Apple’s Find My app, which uses the Bluetooth in every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that’s on the network to passively and anonymously find lost iPhones, Macs, and, yes, AirTags. In practical terms, this means if you leave your AirTag-equipped suitcase on an airport shuttle, for example, as long as someone else on the shuttle has an Apple device, the suitcase’s location will be reported to you (and the person with the iPhone or other Apple device who identified it will never know). Although Tile’s trackers work the same way, they do so on a far smaller scale—given that about a billion Apple devices in the world are opted into the Find My network, it’s much more likely that the shuttle rider one seat back has an iPhone than a Tile. And the odds against a smart luggage tag’s tracker having a user network anywhere near as large as Apple’s are, well, astronomical.

The other smart tag options

In addition to Bluetooth trackers, there are a few other types of smart tags out there, none of which we recommend.

There are smart tags with QR codes or unique website addresses that claim to be smartphone-friendly. We felt these were the exact opposite, requiring the person who finds your luggage to be smartphone or Web literate, which, although likely, is not guaranteed. Also, it adds an extra, and in our opinion unnecessary, step between the person who finds your luggage and your info. If you don’t want to put your home address where everyone can see it, don’t: A phone number or email address should suffice.

There are also a handful of RFID luggage tags on the market, but like the QR code and other smart luggage tags it requires the finder of the lost luggage to have technical knowledge and, in the case of RFID, a special reader. Some airlines use RFID to track luggage, but unless you only fly with that airline and you’re positive the tag you’re getting works with their equipment, it seems an unnecessary cost for something that will rarely help.

And now for the creepy bit. There are tracking devices that you can use to find your luggage anywhere. These devices typically cost over a hundred dollars and require a monthly fee, often $25 to $50. This is because instead of connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, they connect with cell towers directly, which costs money. They’re essentially a smartphone, without the phone. Or the smarts.

In addition to being expensive, they also have the potential to be extraordinarily creepy. Each company selling these devices mentions that it can be used to track other things. Like your car, or your purse … or someone else’s car, or someone else’s purse. The ease to which these could be misused to track someone’s movement gives us significant unease about recommending any product of this type.

Given that there are countless luggage tags on the market, we stuck with the best-reviewed and most popular options from Amazon and well-known travel companies. There are plenty of choices to fit specific styles, but we were looking for a few baseline features important in any luggage tag. For instance, we felt that a sturdy tag was a must, given that it would have to survive being grabbed by not just you but also baggage handlers, cabbies and ride-hail drivers, and hotel employees. The fail point for nearly every tag is the strap or cable that connects it with the luggage, so we looked for a strap that both was firmly attached and could withstand regular use without breaking.

We picked options for tags to stand out or blend in—whether you like one or the other will depend on your personal style preferences. We were split on how important it is to hide your extended contact information, such as anything other than your name. Most of our picks ended up hiding this information from casual view, but we also have an option for people who want their info freely visible.

We sorted through more than 40 tags to figure out the best mix of visually interesting, sturdy, and otherwise worthy-seeming tags. Once the 14 most promising candidates were in hand, I tugged and smashed all our finalists, looking for potential fail points. Generally speaking, as mentioned above, where the strap meets the body is the most likely fail point. In some cases, it’s the strap itself. All our picks have straps that are as solid and secure as their particular material and type will allow. Which is to say, all leather straps will wear, and all plastic straps will likely become more brittle with age. Metal cables are the strongest, but they too might snap or even wear through the body of the tag. It’s something to keep an eye on if you have these tags for several years. If you want something indestructible, the tags with metal straps should wear the best. (Or you can get your own to add to any tag here.)

I also set up and tested the old Tile Pro and Slim to see if they’d work with luggage tags. Since Bluetooth range will vary significantly with how much material or walls are between you and the Tile, your specific mobile device, and so on, we didn’t try to verify Tile’s claims on range, other than that in the real world it will be much less than the ranges Tile claims.

Arlo Skye offered a leather tag with a comparable price to our former leather pick from Tumi, but it was available in a more sedate black, gray, and beige. As of fall 2023, the black and beige are back in stock, though the gray is still sold out.

The Talonport Bag Tag seemed as durable as the CPACC Aluminum tag and came with both a leather strap and a metal one. It also has a lifetime replacement guarantee. However, it was a lot more expensive than the CPACC.

The Tufftaag has sharper metal edges than the other metal options we considered, which didn’t seem ideal. This was a former pick of ours, and in our long-term testing we found that it is as rugged as it seems. It also has space for multiple address cards, which one tester found convenient. For most people, though, the soft silicone of the Ovener is the better option, and if you still want metal, the CPACC is just as good but less expensive.

We used to recommend tags from Tumi and Incase, but both have been discontinued.

You know that feeling when you’re finally in the baggage claim area of your destination airport and a million identical suitcases pass you by — leaving you with no idea if any of them are yours?

Playing luggage bingo at the end of a long journey is never fun, and without an easily identifiable luggage tag, you could be playing it for some time to come.

Always tag your luggage, folks! Without a tag, your personal items could end up in someone else’s hands — or worse still, in another country. Name them to claim them!

Here’s how to make sure your luggage ends up in the right hands: yours.

Your luggage tags should be several things: easy to read, easy to recognize, and well-attached to your baggage. After all, your tag is of no use to you if it comes off before it’s even reached the hold.

Easy To See

If your tag isn’t visible enough to be seen as it spins along the carousel, is it even worth having? Whether it’s brightly colored or just oversized, visibility is vital when it comes to identifying your luggage.

Easy To Read

The other great reason for strapping some sort of ID on your suitcase is that it offers a great way to name your luggage as your own. Your tags should clearly display your name, contact number or email, or other personal details.

Robust and Hard-wearing 

Let’s be honest: airport handlers don’t treat our bags with as much love and care as we’d like. Whether it’s a designer suitcase or a much-loved old rucksack, they all get thrown onto the plane and off again without a second thought for their well-being.

This presents a risk for our luggage tags, too. All that rough and tumble can lead to the demise of delicate tags, and thin or paper-based tags can easily become completely separated from your luggage.

Hot Tip: Go for tags made of more durable materials like plastic, metal, or leather — and forget about those paper ones the airline gives you.

Luggage tags shouldn’t break or show too much of your personal information, according to Anne McAlpin , a travel expert and author of “ Pack It Up: The Essential Guide To Smart Travel .” With that in mind, we sought out options that met the following criteria:

• Material: We looked for tags made of a flexible, but durable material (like silicone) and avoided hard plastic. “Hard plastic tends to break when you check it,” says McAlpin.
• Adequate coverage: Your personal information shouldn’t be visible for anyone to see while standing in line, says McAlpin, who likes luggage tags that cover your personal information. For more details on what to write (and not write) on your luggage tag, see below .
• Sets, or multiple tags: The experts we spoke to recommend using multiple tags on each bag, should one fall off in transit. We looked at options that are sold as a set, or under $15 if sold individually.

What to write on your luggage tag

Whatever you do, don’t put your address on your luggage tag, says McAlpin. “You don't want to advertise that you're not at home, especially with all the fraud these days,” she says. And don’t put your home phone number either so they don’t call your house before robbing it, says McAlpin.

McAlpin recommends putting your first initial and last name and your cell phone number, so that whoever finds your baggage can call you. If you have access to email while traveling, it’s worth writing your email address too. Most importantly, travelers should ask a friend or family member at home to be their spot person if they’re unreachable. “Add the cellphone number and email address of your back home person who has a copy of your itinerary,” she says. “So if you're on your way to Europe and your bag is stuck in Chicago, they can be calling your back home family member and they'll say ‘oh yeah, they're headed to Paris and they're headed to this hotel.”

If you’re headed to the airport and don’t have time to order a luggage tag, a piece of string works too. “Tie ribbon around your luggage,” says McAlpin. “Tie red ribbon, Christmas ribbon, something different and do it on each handle so that everyone can see it coming and going.”

I started putting an Air Tag in my luggage for the first time this year. I have been carry on only for decades now. However, you never know if suddenly the overhead bins are full and they insist on checking your bag! Now they cannot say they don’t know where your bag is when you deplane. Air Tag to the rescue! Hi, great overview! I was wondering whether to place my Apple AirTag in my checked-in luggage, however what always stopped me was the fear that it has a battery, and all batteries are prohibited in the checked-in luggage, due to fire safety. Are the trackers than exempt from this rule? Thank you!

If it’s a lithium ion battery then no, you can’t leave it in your checked luggage–lithium ions are the batteries that can start a fire. If it’s not, you’re OK. I have to remove the lithium battery from the charger on my Away suitcase. But definitely check with your airline!

Over the course of our four-month tests, we did have issues with location accuracy as the AirTag can lose connection quite easily.

The small size of an Apple AirTag is ideal for keeping track of your items without noticing the device is tucked away. Since the tags are about the size of a quarter, they can fit in a suitcase, purse, or wallet with ease, and the metal material feels particularly durable compared to the other plastic models we tried. Made by Apple, the device pairs to an iPhone within seconds and is tracked via the Find My app, where users can also change the name of the device if there is more than one. With the popularity of AirTags , there are tons of compatible accessories (beyond placing them in luggage), including passport covers, wallets, keychains, and wristbands for kids. The biggest downside we experienced with the AirTag is that it didn’t accurately provide the location of the luggage and it spooked us several times with messages saying that luggage was left behind while we were taxiing on the tarmac. Although the AirTag wasn’t our top pick, we still think it’s an excellent option to help prevent lost bags .

You can use this device to track items for free, but the paid subscription offers worthwhile features for some travelers.

The device requires the Tile app and it wasn’t very intuitive to navigate for setup — even after four months of testing, we found the separate app to be annoying.

The Tile Pro Bluetooth Tracker offers the same basic functionality as the other devices we tried, including the ability to see the location of the device on an app. However, frequent fliers will appreciate the ability to upgrade the features of this device by getting one of the two premium plans offered by Tile that cost $30 or $100 per year depending on the plan (you can get the first year for free when you purchase the tracker through Tile). The premium subscription comes with smart alerts to tell you when the device isn’t in range, 30-day location history, and reimbursement for lost items that Tile can’t track with options for $100 or $1,000 reimbursement for either the premium or premium protection plan. 

For travelers who just want to use the Tile tracker as is, we were impressed with the durable and functional design of the plastic fob. It comes with a hole in it so you can use it for keys and wallets along with luggage, too. We had some slight issues setting up the device with the Tile app, but once we started messing around with it, it got easier to navigate over time.

For Android users who are looking for a luggage tracker than can be used while on vacation and for everyday needs, the latest SmartTag from Samsung is a great choice. While it does require an app to use, the set-up process was easy and intuitive. Plus, there is no subscription required to use the SmartTag2 and the battery lasts over 500 days, so you really don't need to think of the device often after you attach it to your suitcase, purse, bag, or keys.

Throughout our tests, the device was very accurate for tracking location and it never lost connection. It's also small and lightweight, so you can easily attach it to just about any item you may want to track. The SmartTag also comes with a case and keychain for extra durability and convenience.

The luggage tracker highlighted below didn’t quite make the cut, but we’re giving it an honorable mention after a solid performance in testing.

Dynotag Brushed Stainless Steel Smart Tag : This luggage tag isn’t technically a tracker since there isn’t a feature to locate the device, but if someone found it, the QR code would easily put them into contact with the owner of the luggage. 

To test eight luggage trackers, we traveled with every device in a checked bag over the course of four months to see how well each one performed based on ease of use, functionality, accuracy, and design. We also tested some of the trackers for everyday use to keep track of wallets, keychains, and headphones. 

First, we set up each device according to the instructions (or lack thereof) to see how easy or difficult it was to get started. After setting up the devices, we placed them in checked luggage and flew to various destinations, including routes with multiple layovers, to ensure our luggage made it onto the flights. In the end, our favorite luggage trackers were simple and intuitive to set up, accurately displayed the location of the item, and had a sleek and functional design meant for tracking luggage and other items while traveling.

The tricky thing about buying a luggage tracker is that not all of them are compatible with all operating systems. In general, most trackers can connect with just iOS or Android, but there are a few options that can connect with both. It’s almost always listed in the specifications section of the product so you’ll want to double-check before purchasing a tracker, especially if you plan on gifting it to someone .

Consider where and how you’ll be using it

Tracking devices are ideal for luggage, but they can also work well for keys, wallets, passports, purses, and more whether you’re on the road or at home. For travelers looking for a tracking device for wallets and passports, we recommend the Apple AirTag since there are tons of travel accessories made to hold the device and they are also slim enough to fit anywhere. It’s not uncommon for another passenger to take the wrong bag from a luggage carousel or overhead locker. Or, for your checked or gate-checked carry-on bag to not arrive with you at your destination. The inconvenience associated with these scenarios, and others, can be avoided or minimized with these tips on luggage tags, trackers, and other tools to tag, track, secure, and differentiate your bags from those of other travellers.

No bag is invulnerable to loss

A purse can be inadvertently left behind on a bathroom hook or the back of a chair. A carry-on bag can be mistakenly taken (or stolen) by another passenger. The same holds true for bags circulating on a luggage carousel or stowed in a luggage rack on a train.

If you’re a carry-on traveller, gate checking may be your only option if the aircraft has smaller overhead lockers, or if they’re all full by the time you board. A flight attendant may need to rearrange bags and move some to another overhead locker.

Tips on luggage tags, trackers, and other tools

Personalize your luggage so it’s easily distinguishable from similar bags, visually and by touch.

A luggage handle wrap with a built-in luggage tag can do triple duty. It’s a luggage tag, a comfortable handle grip, and it can help a bag stand out among a sea of similar bags. Mine came in a set of three from Lewis N Clark .

A stencil could help add a travel-inspired creation to the outside of a hard or soft-sided bag. Or, check out the variety of travel stickers that can be attached to hard-sided luggage, guitar cases, or laptop bags. 

A luggage strap helps prevent a bag from opening while in transit. Some straps incorporate a luggage tag or lock in the design.

A luggage cover protects a bag from scratches and dirt, and makes it instantly recognizable. A cover can also provide a measure of security by minimizing the chance of pilfering or keeping belongings in place in case of a zipper malfunction. Look for a washable, lightweight fabric with high elasticity and openings for luggage handles and wheels.

Avoid colourful embellishments such as pom-poms, ribbons, or scarves that could catch on luggage belts, carts, or other bags and increase the likelihood of damage to equipment or bags.

Slip a tracker such as Tile Mate or Apple AirTag inside your bag and use the respective app on a compatible device to locate it. A tracker in a holder can be attached to an inside zipper, key chain fob, or other attachment point inside a bag or purse.

The type and design of luggage will influence how best to secure it. My Osprey Farpoint 40 has interlocking zippers so I use a triple cable lock . One cable locks the two sets of zippers together, and the other can be looped around the handle, or to another bag or fixed object. It’s also useful for securing luggage in a hostel locker.

There may be occasions that call for a lightweight luggage cable . It can be used to attach my bag to a belt loop when napping in an airport terminal, or lock several bags together when travelling with others. When travelling by train, a cable can help secure a bag to the luggage rack.

Might a low-tech luggage alarm hold some appeal? If your bag is moved while you are sleeping, or from a luggage rack that isn’t easily monitored, a bear bell will alert you and hopefully discourage an opportunistic thief from proceeding with the plan to take your bag.

Take photographs of all bags and their contents: checked luggage, ‘standard’ carry-on bag destined for the overhead locker, and ‘personal’ item to be stowed under the seat in front.

Then, draft an email to yourself with the photographs as attachments. Keep receipts and include photos or scanned copies. In the body of the email describe the bags in detail. For each bag, specify the brand and model, colour, dimensions, and any distinguishing characteristics that help the bag stand out. List the passenger’s name, home and destination addresses, email, and telephone number(s).

If a bag goes missing, the email will be at your fingertips to forward to the airline’s baggage claim services, or the police if it’s suspected luggage was stolen.

Remove all stickers or tags from previous journeys. An automated system might scan an old tag in error, sending luggage off to an unwanted destination.

6. Add ‘luggage tags’ to your packing list

Luggage tags aren’t something to be overlooked, or relegated to afterthought status at the check-in counter at the airport. There’s a good chance those flimsy paper tags provided by airlines will not survive the flight. Include ‘luggage tags’ on your packing list so they’re not forgotten, and have the necessary pre-trip attention they deserve.

Here are some tips on preparing and using luggage tags.

A lost-and-found tag helps hoteliers and hosts, airline and airport security staff, or Good Samaritans, take steps to facilitate the return of lost possessions.

If the information is visible to passers-by, it can end up being scrutinized by many people. A home address can alert would-be burglars that there may not be anyone at home and it’s a good time for a robbery. A home landline telephone number can be enough for thieves to obtain a home address using reverse phone number lookup websites.

A luggage tag needs to contain just enough information to facilitate the return of a delayed, lost, or stolen bag. A name, cell phone number (don’t forget the country code), and email address should be sufficient. If another person has taken a bag by mistake, having a cell phone number may mean that a bag can be returned before the person leaves the airport. 

It might be tempting to use initials as opposed to a full name. However, the airline or transportation company may be able to contact you much faster if its computer can match the name on the luggage tag with the exact name on the ticket.

A checked bag will be handled by different people and different equipment in all kinds of weather. Durability is essential.

Other options include an aluminum tag with a stainless steel cable .

Customized tags are available from a host of web-based companies. I can recommend Personalization Mall . Its simple and straightforward process allows a customer to create unique designs from a wide selection of templates. I downloaded some favourite travel photos to create luggage tag gifts for travelling companions.

Some travellers place a tag on each grab handle as an extra precaution in case one becomes separated from the bag.

Is it wise to choose a luggage tag with a flag or readily recognizable national symbol that advertises your country of origin? One advantage is that it could be a catalyst for interesting conversations. A disadvantage is that it might attract unwanted attention.

An internal luggage tag can contain more information. My internal tag reflects my itinerary. It lists each address and telephone number where I’ll be staying, and the dates I’ll be at each place. If I’m separated from my bag, the inside tag reveals phone numbers where I can be reached, and a complete address if the bag needs to be shipped. It prints on letter-sized paper, a perfect size for slipping inside a plastic page protector. When it’s placed on top of the contents of my bag, it’s hard to be overlooked. In addition, a copy is placed on the door of the fridge at home for the benefit of stay-at-home family members.

Completing luggage tags is much easier if templates are kept on file. Air Canada’s Baggage ID card inspired the template for my internal tag. The template for my external card contains space for my name, email address, and contactable cell phone number. If I’ll be out of the country and not roaming with my cell phone number, I’ll list the telephone numbers (including country code) where I can be reached at my destination. 

For multiple segments with different contactable telephone numbers, it takes so little time to prepare a number of inserts to take with you on your travels. Each one could contain your name and email address, with the respective telephone numbers of family, friends or hotels that are booked in advance. In countries where you plan to pick up a local SIM card, those inserts could have a blank space for the number to be inserted. It takes a little advance planning but well worth it if it facilitates the early return of lost luggage.

Social media travel groups are popular forums for requests for advice on how to track down missing bags. It’s surprising how many refer to carry-on bags taken by other travellers from the overhead compartments. Some respondents mention how they’ve mistakenly taken the wrong bag and their difficulties in determining the owner and how to contact them.

Contact information in a luggage handle wrap is useful only if a person thinks to look there. A tag attached to the outside of a bag is helpful if it hasn’t been separated from the bag during transit. An internal tag is most useful if sits on top of what’s packed and can’t be missed by someone who opens the bag.

When a bag is processed at the check-in kiosk or counter, each item of checked baggage will be tagged with an airline luggage tag. It includes your flight number and destination airport. Always verify the code of the destination airport matches what’s on your itinerary. The receipt portion can then be removed and attached to your boarding pass or stored in a safe place.

The following is from a recent post in a social media travel group:

“I’m currently in Amman, Jordan without my checked luggage. I flew Air Canada from Toronto to San Francisco, then Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Amman. All flights were booked through Turkish Airlines and my checked bag was tagged by Air Canada in Toronto.

I lost my boarding pass with the checked luggage sticker so the best I could do was describe my bag at the Turkish Airlines desk in Amman. The airline can’t find my luggage, is saying the bag doesn’t exist, and they’re unable to help me.”

For checked luggage, most airlines have a luggage-tracking feature within their app. It’s usually found under More > Track My Bags (sr something similar). It allows passengers to see when their bag has been loaded onto a flight, and when it has been unloaded.

While waiting for a friend to arrive in Montreal, I noticed these bags standing neglected in the baggage claim area. It looked like they’d been there for some time and outside the reach of airline and airport staff to help reunite travellers with their luggage. 

All this to say, use a variety of tools to make it easier for you to track down a missing bag, and for others to help you and your luggage get back together and not end up as unclaimed luggage in a warehouse in Scottsdale, USA .

Great information So many things I have never considered

I personally prefer SuperSmartTag luggage tags. They protect your identity and allow you to be anonymous while keeping your luggage traceable. 🙂

Nowadays, it is common to lose your luggage while traveling by air. These tips are really helpful and would make things much easier in case of a mishap

Alitalia lost my luggage for 12 days. It was returned to me three days before the airline closed shop. I think the this is what made it easy (not so easy because it took 12 days! )for them to return my luggage I had was I had a photograph of the luggage and the baggage tag, which is quite an unusual baggage tag. Amazon has a T-shirt called the “clever travel companion”. It’s a tank top with pockets and I wear it under my T-shirt or a blouse or whatever. I think the white one has deeper pockets than the black one. Knock on wood but it would be very hard for someone to get to it.

Great tips! Here’s an idea. Take a picture of your luggage receipt in case you lose it. For me, my phone pictures are backed up to Google Photos, but the email tip could be used also.

Cruise luggage tags: A printable PDF with a TPG twist

After you've checked in for your cruise, you won't want to forget your luggage tags — and I don't mean the hard plastic ones with your contact information that you attach to your suitcases in case your bags are lost.

Your cruise line will generally provide you with a PDF file of luggage tags to print as part of your electronic travel documents when you've completed your registration and provided your necessary details. How to print the cruise luggage tags

• Click the link above to open the PDF version of the luggage tag. (You must have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer.)
• Click the printer icon near the top right corner of the screen.
• Select your printer; make any necessary adjustments to page orientation, size and color; and set the number of copies you'll need. (Print one copy per piece of luggage that you plan to leave with porters when you arrive at the terminal. You don't need them for items you plan to personally carry onto the ship with you.)
• Click the "print" button.

How to attach the cruise luggage tags

• Using a pen, print your name, the ship's name and your sailing date and cabin number on the lines provided.
• Flip the page over so the printed side is facing down.
• Starting at one end, fold the paper twice, longways, toward the middle, using the printed lines as guides.
• Repeat step three from the other end. (The goal is to have a long, skinny strip that displays only the portion of the tag with the TPG logo and lines for your information, with the rest of the page folded underneath to make it thicker.)
• Slide the tag face down through the handle on your suitcase.
• Overlap the two ends so the yellow bars line up, creating a ring, and staple or tape the tag in place.

Tip : If you're flying to your embarkation destination, wait until after your flight to attach the tags to your luggage so they don't detach during transit. Be sure to use them in addition to your cruise line's printable tags, not instead of them.

This Clip-on Device Turns My Regular Bike Into an E-Bike

E-bikes are great for many reasons, but they can be expensive. I’d heard of ways to turn a regular bike into an e-bike with the help of conversion kits, which usually consist of a battery, a motor, and some type of attachment system. The kits usually seemed too involved, requiring me to tweak the hub, replace the back wheel entirely, or add electrical wiring and thread cables throughout the bike. I didn’t want to go all Mad Max on my bike, so I discarded the whole conversion idea entirely. But then I learned about the Clip , a device you can attach to almost any bike’s front tire — without any tools — to power a regular bike like an electric one with pedal-assisting power. It sounded a little too good to be true: Was turning my single-speed commuter bike into an e-bike this easy?

I reached out to Clip this spring, and the brand sent me its Explorer ($599) device to test out. (There’s a less powerful version, the Commuter, for $499.) When I opened the box, I was surprised by how simple the setup was. There was no assembly and no confusing app pairing or tinkering involved. There weren’t even any wires other than the charging cable. The instruction manual was also straightforward: You spread the Clip’s arms open and rest its center wheel (which is what powers you forward) on your front tire. I had the Clip installed in less than a minute. The best part was I didn’t need to modify anything major (though I did have to remove my front basket because it got in the way of the Clip resting on my front fork).

Once it was on, the Clip felt intuitive to use from my first ride. I noticed the device’s wheel has an auto-roll feature — the center wheel slightly powers your front tire (as it’s rolling) even when you’re not pedaling. Then when you pedal, the Clip gives it a more significant boost (up to 15 mph, according to Clip’s website). It also has a wireless-remote button that attaches to your handlebars. You can press it for a full boost without pedaling, like hitting the throttle on a motorcycle or an e-bike.

The other thing I noticed was the added weight on my bike’s front end. At 9.8 pounds (the Commuter is 8.8), the Explorer takes some getting used to. The attachment and detachment process had a similar learning curve — not because it was hard to do but because I wanted to make sure the Clip’s center wheel was resting just right on my front tire. Getting it on the first few times took some adjusting, but after the third ride, I was popping it on and off quickly.

Since testing the Clip for the past few weeks on rides around town, I’m overall really impressed with how it powers my bike. The boost makes it easier to power up long climbs (especially on bridges), and that auto-roll feature gives me a constant nudge forward, making me feel like I’m zooming. It doesn’t have quite the same oomph as an e-bike — like the white electric Citi Bikes , for example — but it’s still a noticeable difference from regular pedaling.

The main drawback is that its battery doesn’t last very long, and the decrease in power is noticeable when you’re running low on juice. The Explorer has a 12-mile range, while the Commuter goes for six miles, so they’re intended to be plugged in and recharged frequently between rides. That means on longer rides, you may want to bring your charger just in case — otherwise, you’ll be left with deadweight on your front tire.

You also have to figure out what to do with the device once you reach your destination. There’s a loop at the top that you can thread a lock through, but I thought it was safest to just remove it and keep it with me off-bike. It’s a nine-pound weight that’s about the size of a small space heater, and if you don’t have a deep enough bag or backpack to hold it, it can be a little unwieldy to carry. (I once forgot to bring a bag to run errands around town and had to carry the Clip with me, which elicited some weird looks from strangers.)

On a recent ride, another cyclist pulled up to me at a light and asked how I liked the Clip (they were considering buying one). I told them that it worked surprisingly well and that it would be a great option for folks who may not want to get a full-on e-bike for whatever reason (such as cost or lack of space). Then the light turned green and I sped off, barely pedaling.

American Airlines passenger tracks missing luggage to homeless encampment

HOLLYWOOD (WKRC) - An American Airlines passenger tracked her missing luggage to a homeless encampment in Hollywood.

According to KNBC, American Airlines passenger Aunny Grace is demanding answers from the airline company after her luggage ended up in a homeless encampment. Per the station, Grace's flight from Dallas Airport on May 29 was delayed.

"American Airlines left thousands of people stranded in the airport overnight for days, actually,” Grace told KNBC.

Grace told the station Tuesday that she spent the night at the airport and caught a flight home to Hollywood Burbank Airport the next day. Although Grace knew her luggage would be delayed, she was left perplexed by what happened next, according to KNBC.

“When the carrier called me, he said he was at my house. I looked and I saw my AirTag twinkling down Western Avenue very slowly, like no direction, really," Grace told the outlet. "I knew intuitively something was wrong. Something was way off."

According to the station, the wrong suitcase was delivered five days later. Tracking the Apple AirTag located inside her luggage, Grace was able to locate the bag at the homeless encampment.

"Sometime between midnight and 7 a.m., my bag wound up in Homeless Town Hollywood. I'm just crying, grabbing my stuff," Grace told KNBC. "I had jewelry, medicine, bags I bought from Bali in Peru. My toiletry bag was flipped upside down, completely empty. Makeup bag, empty. This homeless man just ransacked through my stuff."

Grace told the outlet that a homeless man informed her that he had brought the bag down the street. She told KNBC that she wanted to know how her luggage went from the Burbank Airport to a homeless encampment.

During her search, Grace told the station's reporters that she noticed other bags with American Airline tags on them at the encampment. She also filed a report with the airport police, claiming the section with delayed luggage is not in a secure area.

“Anyone could walk by and just grab bags, one pick-up one after the other. There were hundreds of bags out in the open, away from eye shot of the office,” Grace told the outlet.

American Airlines reached out to Grace and offered to reimburse up to $1,700 for her lost items. Grace claims the offer was well below the $6,300 value of her items, however, according to KNBC.

"We strive to ensure that our customers’ checked luggage and other items arrive at their destinations on schedule and in their original condition. We are investigating what occurred here and in the meantime, a member of our team is in contact with the customer to apologize and resolve the issue," American Airlines said in a statement obtained by KNBC.

Grace told the station that she wanted answers from American Airlines, saying she didn't want any other travelers to experience the headache she has.

“It's going to keep happening until someone takes responsibility. This has to be placed on the responsibility of the airline,” Grace told KNBC.

Due to her experience, Grace told the outlet that she chose to drive across the country to visit family in Boston.

The Burbank police told KNBC that they have Grace's report, but according to the station, it is the responsibility of the airline carrier to ensure passengers' items are delivered.

During the military campaigns of the Russian princes against the Volga Bulgaria, the place where the Oka River flows into the Volga was used as a gathering point for the Murom and Suzdal troops. It was named Novgorod, which literally means “new town”. Later, the adjective “nizhny” (“lower”) was added to the name of the town in the Russian annals. This was probably done in order to distinguish it from the town of Novgorod (present Veliky Novgorod) and other Novgorods that existed at that time.

The founding of Nizhny Novgorod was the beginning of an active expansion of Russian influence in the Mordovian lands. Two white-stone churches were built in the fortress, including the Cathedral of the Archangel (1227) - evidence of the special role that the town had in the system of lands of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus. However, the Mongol invasion stopped further development.

Information about Nizhny Novgorod of the 13th century is extremely scarce. But it is known that after the invasion it revived relatively quickly. Nizhny Novgorod is constantly mentioned in Russian chronicles as a major political and economic center of North-Eastern Rus and a spiritual center of Orthodoxy in the Volga region. The town was often the object of conflicts between Moscow and Tver.

In 1392, the Moscow prince Vasily I received a jarlig for the Nizhny Novgorod Principality and captured Nizhny Novgorod. The final annexation of Nizhny Novgorod to the possessions of Moscow took place in the late 1440s.

Nizhny Novgorod in the 16th-18th centuries

Under Ivan III and Vasily III, the town played the role of a border post and was a gathering place for military campaigns against the Kazan Khanate. In 1508-1515, the stone kremlin was built. After the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible, the border role of Nizhny Novgorod became insignificant. At the same time, Nizhny Novgorod became the center of trade between Russia and the East and a large shipbuilding center.

In September 1611, during the Time of Troubles, the Second People’s Militia was organized in Nizhny Novgorod to fight the Poles who were able to establish control over Moscow. The militia consisted of detachments of townspeople, peasants of the central and northern regions of the Tsardom of Russia. The leaders were the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky (the monument to them is installed on Red Square in Moscow). In October 1612, the militia was able to completely liberate Moscow.

In the 17th century, a schism occurred in the Orthodox Church under Patriarch Nikon. It led to the formation of numerous settlements of Old Believers in the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1695, during his Azov campaign, Peter I arrived in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1719, as a result of his administrative-territorial reforms, the town became the center of a separate Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. In 1722, setting off on the Persian campaign, Nizhny Novgorod was again visited by Peter I. Here he celebrated his 50th birthday.

In 1767, Nizhny Novgorod was visited by Empress Catherine II. During her stay in the town, she met the famous local mechanic and inventor Ivan Kulibin. After her visit, a new regular town plan was approved. The first town theater was built in 1798. Later, it became known as Nikolaevsky, in honor of Emperor Nicholas I.

Nizhny Novgorod in the 19th century

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, Nizhny Novgorod became a major scientific and cultural center of the Russian Empire. In 1811, the population of Nizhny Novgorod was about 14,400 people. In 1817, the Makaryev Fair, the largest fair of the Russian Empire, was moved to the village of Kunavino (one of the districts of today’s Nizhny Novgorod). Before that, it was organized every year near the Makaryevsky Monastery, which burned down a year earlier. From that time on, it began to be called the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. Thanks to it, the rapid economic development of the town and adjacent villages began.

After Emperor Nicholas I visited the town in 1834, the large-scale reconstruction of Nizhny Novgorod began. In 1847, a water supply system appeared in the town and the first fountain was built. Private buildings in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin were demolished and new administrative buildings appeared in their place. A lot of new buildings, streets, boulevards, and gardens were built.

In 1849, a large industrial enterprise was founded in the village of Sormovo (another district of today’s Nizhny Novgorod). Later, it became known as the Sormovo plant. It was producing river steamers, various railway cars, steam locomotives, and trams. Thanks to the plant, Sormovo soon turned into a large village of workers. In 1862, the construction of the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway was completed. In 1863, the population of the city was 41,500 people.

In 1896, the city hosted the All-Russian Trade and Industrial Exhibition. The radio receiver of the engineer A.S. Popov, the hyperboloid tower of the engineer V.G. Shukhov were demonstrated at the exhibition, as well as the first Russian car of the Frese and Yakovlev factories.

Nizhny Novgorod in the first half of the 20th century

In 1914, about 111,000 people lived in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1917, during the First World War, the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute was evacuated to this city, on the basis of which the Nizhny Novgorod Polytechnic Institute was created.

On October 7, 1932, Nizhny Novgorod was renamed Gorky due to the 40th anniversary of the literary and social activities of the writer Maxim Gorky. In 1933, the first permanent bridge across the Oka River was built. The railway bridge across the Volga was constructed too. Thanks to this, it became possible to go by rail through Gorky to the Urals and Siberia.

The 1930s were a period of rapid industrialization. In 1932, the largest industrial enterprise in the city was opened - the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ), an important object of the Soviet defense industry. In the 1930s-1940s, the city was even referred to as “Russian Detroit”. By 1939, the population of Nizhny Novgorod increased to about 644,000 people.

Every fourth resident of the Gorky region (about 822 thousand people) fought on the fronts of the Second World War. Of these, more than 350 thousand people did not return from the battlefields - they were killed, went missing or died from wounds in hospitals.

In June 1943, three large raids of German bombers were carried out on Gorky. The main target of air strikes was the Gorky Automobile Plant, which as a result was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt only in the middle of 1944. Over 500,000 wounded were treated in dozens of hospitals during the war years.

The city was an important center for the production of weapons. During the Second World War, every second Soviet car, every third tank and every fourth artillery piece were produced at Gorky’s plants. In total, about 38 thousand tanks, self-propelled guns, armored vehicles, 43 thousand mortars, 16 thousand aircraft, 22 submarines, 109 thousand cars, more than 85 thousand radio stations, as well as 101 thousand artillery pieces and 1,165 Katyusha multiple rocket launchers were produced in Gorky.

Nizhny Novgorod after the Second World War

In 1946, the first GAZ-M-20 “Pobeda” passenger car and the GAZ-51 truck left the assembly line of the Gorky Automobile Plant. In 1949, the construction of the monumental Chkalov Stairs connecting the Upper Volga and Lower Volga embankments was completed in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod. On August 4, 1959, the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR “On the closure of the city of Gorky for visiting by foreigners” was issued. In 1962, the population of Gorky exceeded 1 million people.

On January 18, 1970, a radiation accident occurred at the Krasnoe Sormovo plant. During the construction of a nuclear submarine, an unauthorized launch of the reactor took place. After working at prohibitive power for about 10-15 seconds, it partially collapsed. Hundreds of workers were exposed to the radioactive release. In total, over one thousand people took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident and were exposed to radiation.

In 1985, a subway was opened in Gorky. In 1980-1986, Andrei Sakharov, a world famous nuclear physicist, Nobel laureate, and activist, was in exile in Gorky to prevent his contacts with foreigners. In the early 1990s, the “closed city” status was lifted and the city became accessible to foreigners. On October 22, 1990, Gorky was renamed back to Nizhny Novgorod. In 1991, the population of the city reached its maximum - 1,445,000 people.

At the end of the 20th century, the information technology sphere began to actively develop in the city. In the 2000s, a transport problem arose because of the insufficient carrying capacity of the Nizhny Novgorod bridges connecting the lower part of the city and the upper one.

In February 2012, the Nizhny Novgorod Volga Aerial Tramway was opened. This 3661-meter-long gondola lift cable car connected Nizhny Novgorod with the town of Bor. Its daily passenger traffic is about 5,000 people. In 2013, the city electric train was launched - an alternative to the subway line from Sormovo to Moskovsky railway station.

Nizhny Novgorod hosted 6 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018 . A new stadium was built, the old river port was demolished, a new park and embankments were created. Large-scale restoration of old streets and buildings took place, new museums were opened, hotels were built, and parks were reconstructed.

It starts from the observation deck at the monument to Valery Chkalov (the famous Soviet pilot who made the first non-stop flight from the USSR to the USA via the North Pole), next to the St. George Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street - the main street of Nizhny Novgorod built up with noble mansions of the past centuries. A large part of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya is reserved for the pedestrian zone and is analogous to the pedestrian Arbat Street in Moscow.
