Travel wraps are essentially extra-large scarves, and size is one of the greatest considerations you'll have when choosing a travel wrap. A good size is about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide, so it can stretch over most of your body.

You'll also want to pay attention to material. There are several fabrics that will be both cozy and warm without feeling too bulky, making them ideal for travel wraps. We've outlined a few of the most popular options below.

• Cashmere:  Derived from Kashmir goats , these soft fibers are washed and then spun into yarn to create plush wraps. Loved for its soft warmth, ability to wick moisture and breathability, cashmere is guaranteed to keep you cozy on a long travel day. It does require a higher upkeep, however, as it's recommended to be dry cleaned or hand-washed due to its fine nature. We also suggest looking for manufacturers who  practice more animal-friendly shearing techniques .
• Wool:  Made  primarily from sheep's fur , wool is known to be some of the warmest fabric around. (Read: When that airplane air conditioner hits, a wool wrap will keep you nice and toasty.) It's hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitivities, and it's mildew- and mold-resistant (wool can reportedly soak up to  as much as 30 percent  of its weight in water), meaning even if you spill a bit of liquid on it, it won't get super gross in your suitcase. You shouldn't put your wool in the dryer to avoid shrinking.
• Polyester:  A synthetic fiber  made from a type of plastic , this ultra-durable material is moisture-wicking and ultra weather-resistant. It's also highly wrinkle-resistant, so it won't look like junk no matter how badly you smush it up under you in the back of the car.
• Acrylic : Acrylic is a  synthetic alternative  to wool that is just as snuggly and dependable. It's highly resistant to UV fading, which means the dye will stay vibrant for longer, though it's not the most eco-friendly option around. Acrylic fibers also tend to stretch with heat, so never wash your scarf in hot water.
• Cotton:  Classic and easy, cotton is a staple for its durability, breathability and light breeziness. It's also another great option  if you have allergies  to any other fabrics.
• Silk:  If you want to add a but of luxe to your ensemble, silk is not only beautiful, but is a  natural protein fiber  obtained from the mulberry silkworm that's extremely strong and helps to regulate your temperature. It's lightweight, breathable and dries quickly, and it will feel nice against your skin, which can improve relaxation and sleep for some—perfect for any long journey ahead.
• Microfiber :  Made from synthetic fibers , such as polyamide (a nylon byproduct) and polyester, this elastic fabric will be super soft, since it has very small thread diameters. Beyond that, it's long-lasting and super lightweight, which is ideal if you're strictly a  carry-on  only person. The one downside? These fibers easily attract dirt and grime like a magnet.

How to Style a Travel Wrap

The best part of a travel wrap is its versatility. Since it can be worn in so many ways, you can literally style it with just about anything. Going poncho-style? Try it over a loose top or blouse and let it serve as your top layer. (Pro tip: Wear it with shawl pins or shawl buckle clasp so it won’t fall down.) If you're throwing it on as a  scarf , a bulkier sweater and jeans will be fine, since it will sit neatly on top. When worn as a blanket, you can throw it over anything from a suit dress to a pair of  sweats .

Love this! Blanket scarves and turkish towels can be used in similar ways – use them as scarves, blankets and even a pillow or lumbar support in a pinch. The turkish towel can obviously be used as a towel as well. Very versatile and help keep packing to a minimum!

What is the best size for a travel wrap?

Ideally, you want the fabric to cover your entire body, or most of it, when using it as a blanket—yet be small enough to function as a shawl and enhance your look without overpowering it, Rudolph notes. She adds that a travel wrap should be about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide.

"Optimum length for a travel wrap would be to your knees," says Sharp. "This way you can wear it long but also have the option to wrap it around your neck without it looking too bulky."

How do I style a travel wrap?

As travel wraps are so simple, yet versatile, you can get really creative with styling. Rudolph suggests pairing yours with cropped ankle pants, a knitted sweater, and your favorite sneakers . "If you plan on going into the office fresh off the plane, try pairing your wrap with wool trousers [and] a turtleneck, and draping it over your body like a shawl," she adds.

During a long travel day, you might consider styling your wrap with leggings , sneakers, and an oversized blazer "for the perfect cool, yet comfy travel look," says Sharp. Another simple tip: Coordinate the color of the wrap with your outfit, Sharp suggests. This keeps your 'fit looking uniform and chic.

When shopping, try to stick to versatile, neutral colors like brown, gray, shades of beige, and black, Sharp advises. "As it is a heavier piece, you want it to feel as elevated as possible."

Wrapping luggage in plastic is a technique used by many travelers to protect their checked luggage. It can help deter theft, keep your bag clean and dry, and keep your items intact if your zipper happens to fail. Most people with bags wrapped in plastic have it done by a company at the airport but it is possible to do it at home. Be aware that while you can do it yourself, there is a chance it will be removed by security before your bag gets loaded onto your plane.

Choosing a Wrap

• These products are available from online retailers and at select some big box stores.

• Commercial cling wrap is typically available from packaging supply and moving supply companies, as well as from online retailers.

Applying the Wrap

• Once the center is wrapped several times you can begin wrapping repeatedly without having to hold the end any longer.

• When this is done, every surface of the bag should be covered in plastic.

• If you have a nice piece of luggage you want to be careful when cutting the wrap. Be sure not to cut or nick the luggage while your are cutting the plastic.

Also, since they’re primarily made for the grab handles, there aren’t any extra features that will make these work better on a wheel handle. In other words, if you don’t know by heart where the push button is on your suitcase wheel handle, you might struggle to find it if it’s covered with this wrap.

Additionally, each of the handle wraps includes a contact card on the back side, which is quite useful. These are sold only in sets of five pieces, and they’re very affordable since they’re around $2.4 per wrap.

The Hibate handle wraps will fit grab handles and wheel handles on any luggage. They are secured in place with sturdy Velcro closure, and the Velcro strap is wide enough to offer some adjustability for the wrap.

Additionally, these handle wraps include a contact card on the inside, so you can write all your details and hope someone contacts you in case your luggage ever gets lost. They’re a good option overall, and they’re great value for money because the five-packs end up costing just about $2 per handle wrap.

The handle wraps are made from Styrene Butadiene Rubber, which is the same material used in the manufacturing of wet suits. They’re soft and slightly bouncy to the touch, and they guarantee that you never pinch your hand on the suitcase handle.

These wraps will work with both grab handles and wheel handles, although it’s worth noting that they’re not ideal for wheel handles with a push button, unless you know precisely where it’s located.

Travelon’s handle wraps are available in only three colors – black, neon green, and neon yellow. The black color is good if you want an inconspicuous handle wrap, while the neon colors are a better option for noticing your luggage easier on the baggage carousel.

Additionally, these wraps feature contact info cards on the inside, so you can still have all your personal details on your luggage, but without having them displayed for everyone at the airport to read.

This can significantly help with the fatigue one experiences after they’ve dragged a heavy suitcase around for hours, plus it just makes the luggage look better. The wraps can be used on wheel handles, grab handles, and even the duffel and tote handles, but it’s worth noting that they’re not the best option for wheel handles since there’s no cut-out for a push button.

The luggage handle wraps from CM are sold in packs of five, and the price per piece comes out to $2.4, which is a great deal. Also, it’s important to note that you can choose from three sets of patterns – one with images of Van Gogh’s famous paintings, and two packs with summer-inspired illustrations.

I love all 15 images that are printed on these handle wraps, but I’ve already told you which is my favorite. The unique pattern means that your luggage will be easily noticeable at baggage claim, even if there are dozens of other people with bright neon wraps on their suitcase handles.

Go with the NC luggage handle wraps if you prefer colorful items. These wraps are only available in fun and colorful designs, as well as solid colors with polka dots. They’re definitely not a suitable option for people who want sleek and understated luggage handle wraps.

These are standard-size luggage handle wraps that are made from neoprene, so they feel soft and comfortable to the touch. They are secured in place with tough Velcro, ensuring they stay in place even if you’re holding onto the handle wrap often.

You can use these for both the grab handles and the wheel handle of your luggage, although it’s worth noting they’re better suited for the grab handles. If you use one of these wraps on the wheel handle, you might struggle with pushing the wheel handle button.

The NC Neoprene handle wraps are only available in sets of five. They’re not at all expensive and are generally good value for money, but if you don’t need five handle wraps, they could be a waste of money. However, I must point out that you can use these on duffel bags, tote bags, and suitcases, so I’m pretty sure you could find ways to use all five handle wraps.

Vigorport 2 Pack Luggage Handle Wrap

The Vigorport 2-pack of luggage handle wraps is an excellent option if you don’t need a pack of five or more handle wraps. This pack includes just two neoprene handle wraps in the same color – one for the wheel handle and another one for the grab handle.

They’re both soft and thick for a comfortable grip and feature Velcro closure. Each handle wrap has a contact info sheet on the inside, which will keep your personal information hidden from nosey onlookers.

You can get these handle wraps in four different colors, which include either a classic black or three much brighter colors. Go with one of the bright colors if you want to make your luggage more easily noticeable, but stick with classic black if you prefer muted colors. It’s worth noting that you can’t mix and match colors, so whatever option you choose, you’ll get two luggage handle wraps in that iteration.

This set retails for approximately $7, which is a fair price for two neoprene luggage handle wraps. It’s inexpensive, but not as great value for money as the sets that include up to five items. Another thing to note is that the Vigorport handle wraps are among the bigger options featured here, so they’re perfectly suitable for people with big hands who don’t find the standard size of luggage handle wraps to be the right fit.

IUAQDP 8 Pieces Leather Luggage Handle Wrap

The Iuaqdp pack of luggage handle wraps is great if you’re specifically looking for luggage handle wraps made from (imitation) leather. These are constructed from PU leather with brass buttons for decoration, and they look much more stylish than neoprene wraps.

But PU leather is not quite as thick, so you won’t get the same feeling of comfort and padding to the touch. While there’s no doubt that these will look better on your suitcase, I just don’t think they’re more functional than standard neoprene wraps.

On the other hand, these will work great for duffel bags and similar luggage, especially if it doesn’t already have an included handle wrap. It will make the bag easier to carry, and the PU leather will feel much better in your hand that the standard nylon carry straps.

The brass buttons won’t feel that great in your hands, so make sure that you turn the wrap so that the buttons are on the bottom side. You can somewhat avoid them with your fingers, but not if they’re on the top side that you grab with the palm of your hand.

These luggage handle wraps are available in sets of two and eight. The set of eight is by far the best value for money since it’s well under $2 for a handle wrap, while the other sets are more than $4.5 per wrap.

The Cosmos neoprene handle wraps are possibly the best option for luggage wheel handles. These wraps are hollow in the place where the push button of the wheel handle is supposed to go, so you don’t have to struggle to press it at any time.

Also, the wraps are made from neoprene, so they will feel very soft and comfortable in your hands. They feature a strong hook and loop fastener that ensures the wrap stays securely closed.

One thing to note is that, because of the hollow design, there’s really no place for a contact info card on the inside of the wrap. This can be a bit of a downside, so keep that in mind if you prefer to get a handle wrap that can hold your contact information without displaying it to everyone else at the airport.

The Cosmos neoprene wraps are available only in sets of five pieces, and they retail for approximately $2.4 per piece. It’s good value for money, and it’s worth noting that you can choose packs that include five handles of the same color, but you can also get a set that includes five handle wraps in different colors.

What To Look For

While most handle wraps featured here will fit standard luggage handles, you should always make sure that the dimensions of the wrap are a good fit for the handle of your primary suitcase. Especially if you’re looking to get a wrap for the wheel handle of your luggage since those can often be made in unique shapes and sizes and not all handle wraps will fit on them.

One thing to note is that standard handle wraps won’t fit a single-barrel wheel handle. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any handle wraps that fit single-tube handles, but I will update this post if something pops up.

Carefully choose the color of the luggage handle wrap. I recommend something bright and contrasting to the color of the suitcase shell if you’re getting a handle wrap for a large checked suitcase, mostly because it will be easier to spot it on the luggage carousel. Put distinct handle wraps on your large luggage, and you’ll always be the first to spot your suitcase at baggage claim.

On the other hand, if you’re getting a handle wrap for a carry-on, you can go with more muted colors. Pay more attention to the comfort of the wrap, since you’re bound to use that handle more when moving around the airport and the airplane cabin.

Most of the handle wraps featured here are available in sets. Unless you’re looking at fancy luggage handle wraps designed by premium brands, you can’t really get just one handle wrap for your luggage.

Some options are available in sets of two and three, but the vast majority of wraps come in a set of five. The Transportation Security Administration has weighed in on the airport wrap battle.

Swaddling suitcases in plastic is a common practice among international travelers looking to prevent damage and theft, as well as unwanted items from getting snuck into their luggage.

However, experts with the TSA claim that this measure might not provide the added security layer that people believe it does.

In fact, wrapping baggage — which is often carried out at airport stations for upwards of $30 — can ironically complicate the security screening process for both travelers and authorities.

If a checked bag is flagged during the mandatory bomb inspection, “the 3D X-ray image is sent to a TSA officer to review,” TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers told Travel and Leisure. “TSA officers look at hundreds of X-ray images, so they know what common items look like on the X-ray screen.”

And while the scanner won’t single out these prophylactic parcels, they are not precluded from examination, which, in their case, involves cutting them open by any means necessary. That means wrapped bags are just as susceptible to inspection-induced damage as their naked counterparts.

Once the bag is unwrapped, the TSA doesn’t replace the wrapping, either. However, baggage protection service Secure Wrap — which is available at JFK — does offer complimentary rewrapping after it’s torn open.

As for theft concerns, every inspection room is equipped with CCTV cameras, meaning wrap-happy passengers shouldn’t have to worry about employees stealing items, according to Saraiah Davis, a transportation security manager.

Ultimately, experts suggest that bundling bags is an unnecessary and expensive measure that can lead to an unwrappy ending.

Perhaps the one good use for plastic covering is protecting bags against normal wear and tear during travel. Meanwhile, some parcels need to be wrapped to keep them from coming apart in transit.  

If one of these suitcases needs to be inspected and cannot safely reach the final destination without wrap, the TSA will contact the airline to alert the flyer to their bag status and how they can retrieve it.

In the event that wrapping is unavoidable, travel site The Points Guy advises using reusable fabric wraps or a company that employs recyclable covering.

This is better for the environment and can also make identifying one’s bag on the carousel feel like less of a shell game, according to the post.

For better protection, experts advise affixing bags with a TSA-approved lock, which allows the TSA to open them easily without feeling like they’re unwrapping a Christmas present.

Does Wrapping Your Luggage Make It More Secure? TSA Weighs In

Here’s what you should know before wrapping your luggage for your next flight.

It’s a common sight at any airport around the world — wrapping stations offering “additional protection” at a cost. The price can vary anywhere from $15 to $30 or more, with the more expensive options typically offering some sort of travel insurance. Most people wrap their luggage because they feel it’s safer, but is this true? I spoke with Saraiah Davis, transportation security manager, and Lorie Dankers, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), to find out. 

How TSA Handles Wrapped Luggage

Your suitcase has quite the journey from the baggage counter to your aircraft. When you check your bag at a U.S. airport, it goes through an explosive detection system. This is a 3D scanner that can identify anything that could be a potential explosive. “If the technology flags the bag, the 3D X-ray image is sent to a TSA officer to review,” explains Dankers. “TSA officers look at hundreds of X-ray images, so they know what common items look like on the X-ray screen.” The technology doesn’t single out any bags that have been wrapped, so that won’t prevent a bag from being opened if it does get flagged.

After reviewing the image, the officer can either clear it and send the bag to the airline or flag it for a physical inspection. Only 5 percent of bags are opened for physical inspection, so it’s a much smaller number than you might think. In the physical inspection, the officers will open up the suitcase by any means necessary. If your bag is wrapped, the wrapping will need to be cut to do the examination. Davis explained that all baggage inspection rooms have CCTV cameras with heavy accountability, so there’s never a concern about theft.

When wrapped baggage is cut for inspection, it doesn’t get rewrapped. The wrapping will either get thrown away or taped together, but it won’t be the same as it originally was. Davis says that most bag wrapping typically occurs on international flights, as travelers want that added layer of protection. Sometimes, bags are in bad condition and are wrapped to keep them together. If one of these bags needs to be opened and cannot safely reach the final destination, the TSA will contact the airline to notify the passenger about the status of their bag and where to retrieve it. 

Bottom Line

It’s generally not recommended to wrap your bag, as it doesn’t provide any substantial benefits that can justify the added cost. If you want extra protection for your luggage while it’s in transit, you should purchase a suitcase with a TSA-approved lock . This way, if your suitcase needs to be opened for whatever reason, they can do so easily. The only real benefit wrapping your bag could offer is protection against regular wear and tear, and this is only a real concern if you want to keep your suitcase looking brand-new. Otherwise, stick with a TSA-approved lock and enjoy your summer travels.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
