Road Trip and Weather Conditions for Interstate I-5
Interstate I-5 is the main arterial interstate for the west coast of the United States. It runs north-south from Blaine, Washington, to Chula Vista, California (near San Diego). It is the only interstate in the US that connects from a border crossing of Canada to a border crossing of Mexico. Along the way, it crosses through the states of Washington, Oregon, and California, running 1,381 miles in length.
Interstate I-5 passes through many of the largest cities of the west coast. It passes through Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California. At the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the Mexico border, over 70,000 vehicles cross the border every day. At the northern border, at the Peach Arch Border Crossing into Canada, about 4,800 cars cross the border every day (trucks are prohibited at this crossing and must cross the Pacific Highway Border Crossing roughly one mile to the east).
Weather Conditions for Interstate I-5
The Pacific Northwest experiences heavy rainfall throughout the year, as a natural rainforest climate zone stretching from the Canadian border, through Washington, and ending south of Portland, Oregon. Rainfall plus snowfall in some areas average up to 167 inches of rain each year. Heavy fog is also common throughout this area.
Between the border of Oregon and California, I-5 crosses its highest point over the pass of Siskiyou Summit. The pass sits 4,310 feet above sea level and the pass experiences a 2,300 foot elevation change within a 6 mile span. Heavy snow is common from November through April.
Weather Conditions in Washington on I-5
The weather in Washington on Interstate I-5 varies depending on the season. In the summer, temperatures can reach into the 90s with some humidity. The nights are usually still warm and pleasant. In the winter, temperatures can dip below freezing and snow is common. The area is known for heavy rains throughout the year.
The Cascade Mountains provide a barrier to the moist Pacific air. The area can be quite wet, especially in the winter and spring. The high mountains also create a wind tunnel effect, which can cause windy conditions all year long. There can also be high winds in the winter due to storms coming in off the coast. No matter what time of year, it is important to be prepared for the weather in Washington on Interstate I-5.
Weather Conditions in Oregon on I-5
Oregon's Interstate I-5 runs from the California border in the south to the Washington border in the north, passing through many cities and towns throughout the state. As a result, the weather conditions vary greatly along the route.
In the south, temperatures can get quite hot in the summer months, with temperatures reaching as high as 100°F. However, the temperatures usually stay below 90°F. Rainfall is usually light but can be heavy at times.
In central Oregon, temperatures tend to be cooler, with highs in the summer months typically ranging from the mid 70s to low 80s. Rainfall is much heavier in this region, with some areas receiving over 50 inches of rain each year. Snowfall is also possible during the winter months.
In the north, temperatures are even cooler, with highs in the summer months typically reaching only the mid 60s. Rainfall is also very heavy in this region, with some areas receiving over 80 inches of rain each year. Snowfall is possible during the winter months, but it is usually light.
In general, the weather along Interstate I-5 in Oregon can be quite variable, with temperatures ranging from hot to cold and rainfall from light to heavy. Travelers should be prepared for any type of weather conditions when traveling on I-5.
Weather Conditions in California on I-5
California's weather along Interstate I-5 can vary greatly depending on the time of year and the region.
During the winter months, temperatures can range from mild to cold in the north. Meanwhile, the south can experience temperatures in the mid-60s. Rainfall is common in the winter, especially in the northern part of the state. Snow is possible, but rare.
Spring brings warmer temperatures and less rainfall across the state. The northern part of the state can still experience showers. Summer is generally hot and dry along I-5, with temperatures in the mid-80s in the north and mid-90s in the south. Fall can be mild, but it can also bring occasional showers and thunderstorms.

10 of the best national parks to visit in the summer, and 2 to avoid, according to a couple who have been to all 63
- A Gen X couple who has been to all 63 national parks says some are better than others in the summer.
- Matt and Karen Smith would avoid parks like Death Valley because of killer summer temperatures.
- The best to visit in the summer are high alpine national parks.
There are 63 national parks in the US, but according to a couple who have been to all of them , not every park is a summer destination.
Matt and Karen Smith, both 63, told Business Insider they left their jobs in 2010 with the sole mission of visiting every US national park after being inspired by their friends Bob and Sue.
Since then, the couple has written several books about their national park experiences and shares their tips and tricks on an Instagram page with over 247,000 followers as of May 2024 and on their podcast, "Dear Bob and Sue: A National Parks Podcast."
The National Parks Service reported earlier this year that over 325 million people visited at least one national park last year, a 4% increase from the year prior.
With popularity close to an all-time high, here are eight parks the Smiths advise going to in the summer and two they'd recommend avoiding.
Visiting Death Valley in the summer can be a killer — "literally."
If you're considering stopping by Death Valley this summer, the Smiths would highly encourage otherwise.
As much as they love the Californian desert park, hiking the Gower Gulch Loop, and soaking in the sunset views from the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Matt and Karen said the sweltering heat conditions in the summer aren't worth the hassle.
"We love Death Valley," Matt said. "Don't go to Death Valley in the summer. It's not because Death Valley is a bad park. It's that the heat can kill you, literally."
He has a point. In early July 2023, tourists made headlines for arriving at the park in droves despite the NPS issuing multiple warnings of a dangerous heat wave reaching temperatures of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Several deaths were reported in the aftermath, including that of an older hiker , who the NPS reported was discovered collapsed by a restroom near the Golden Canyon trailhead.
For a safer, less brutally hot visit, the Smiths recommend planning a trip in January or February.
The same goes for Joshua Tree, which the Smiths say can also be "brutally hot."
In the same vein, Matt and Karen would advise against visiting Joshua Tree National Park in the summer as it can get "brutally hot."
Instead, they say the best time to go is January and February when temperatures are cooler.
When you arrive, they suggest trekking their favorite hike, the Panorama Loop, which they say is less crowded and offers great views.
Among the best parks to visit in the summer is North Cascades in Washington.
According to Karen, some of the best national parks to visit in the summer are high alpine parks " in the general northwest part of the country."
The Smiths say North Cascades is a prime example and provides a perfect visit from July to September.
The alpine hiking trails are reminiscent of the Swiss Alps and make you feel like you're in the wilderness despite only being a few hours from busy cities and towns like Bellingham and Mount Vernon, they added.
Another summer favorite of the Smiths is Mount Rainier, also in Washington.
Mount Rainier is only a few hours from the Smiths home in Washington, which is convenient since it's one of their favorite parks to visit in the summer.
" Mount Rainier isn't quite as popular as some of the others, but Mount Rainier is incredible," Karen said. "It's like you're in Switzerland. It's world-class hiking at Mount Rainier."
One of their favorite spots in the park is the Sunrise area, which they say is accessible by car from July 1. "Mount Rainier is literally in your face," Karen added.
A summertime visit to Glacier is worth it for the views alone, the Smiths say.
In Montana lies Glacier National Park , which the Smiths say offers hiking experiences in areas like Logan Pass or Many Glacier that rival the Swiss Alps.
Besides the hiking, the couple says the best reason to visit Glacier is for the panoramic views you get while driving down the Going-to-the-Sun road.
The only caveat the Smiths have is that the window of time to visit Glacier in the summer is slightly tighter. They'd recommend visiting from mid-July to mid-September, though, toward the end of that period, they warn that weather can turn from full-on summer to winter storms in just a few days.
Your chances of getting unobstructed views of Crater Lake are higher in the summer.
Another national park that the Smiths recommend visiting in the summer is Crater Lake in Oregon. One of the reasons is that many of the roads in the park "don't open until at least July 1," Karen said.
But, more importantly, the couple say views along the rim of the crater are the most spectacular and unobstructed by clouds during the summer, from July to September.
Yosemite is "a beauty" during the warmer months of the year.
Yosemite is "a beauty" and "a great one to visit" from July to September, Matt says.
It's not impossible to visit in the winter, he added, but it's not the same since most of the high-elevation areas and roads are closed off.
As Yosemite is one of the most popular national parks, the couple likes to avoid crowds by opting for less popular high-country trails in the Tioga Pass area, which they say are just as good as the more well known trails.
An underrated alternative to Yosemite that is just as beautiful in the summer is Kings Canyon.
For those interested in escaping the crowds at a national park in the summer, the Smiths would encourage looking into Kings Canyon in California.
The Cedar Grove area of the park is similar to Yosemite Valley, but without the crowds, they say. While access depends on the snow conditions, they say the best chances of a successful visit is from July to September.
Sequoia National Park is another great option for those looking to beat the crowds in the summer.
As the name suggests, the towering Sequoia trees are the main draw of visiting this national park, the Smiths said.
However, they say it's also home to some great hiking, through areas like the Giant Forest and trails leading to the top of Moro Rock.
Given the park's high elevation, Sequoia gets quite a bit of snow. According to the couple, it's best to go in the summer when temperatures are warmer and the snow has melted. That said, hiking in the winter when the roads are cleared can be a magical experience.
If you're a wildlife lover, be sure to visit Yellowstone in the early summer.
The Smiths' favorite activities in Yellowstone are hiking to the overlook of the Grand Prismatic Spring and driving through the Lamar Valley to see bison roaming.
From late spring to mid-June, the couple say visitors also have the opportunity to see a lot of baby bison, nicknamed "Red Dogs" for the orange tint of their fur after they're born.
It's important to remember that it can snow in Yellowstone no matter the time of year. However, Matt and Karen say it's generally not an issue from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Grand Teton is Yellowstone's "sister park" and is also perfect to visit in the summer.
"Grand Teton is another phenomenal park that you should visit in the summer," Karen said, specifically between Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Located less than a three-hour drive from Yellowstone, the park is home to a bounty of wildlife, including grizzly bears, so the couple encourages visitors to carry bear spray with them.
Being the avid hikers they are, the couple recommends hiking to the west side of Jenny Lake and into Cascade Canyon, where they say they regularly spot moose.
Denali is just one of the 15 national parks in Alaska that the Smiths recommend for summer visits.
"If people want to see the Alaska parks, you want to go in the summer," Karen said.
While some of the Alaska parks are pretty remote and less accessible, like Wrangell St. Elias, one of the most convenient to visit is Denali.
"It's just a couple of hours north of Anchorage," Karen said. "So it's one of the easiest parks to get to and it's also phenomenal."
The couple said that with a permit, visitors can ride a bus into the park and enjoy the vast wilderness it offers.
Matt and Karen added that the best time to go is in August because it's less cloudy, so there's a higher chance of getting a clear view of the mountain, and, importantly, because there are mosquitos.

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — A weekend spring storm that drenched the San Francisco Bay area and closed Northern California mountain highways also set a single-day snowfall record for the season on Sunday in the Sierra Nevada.
The wet weather system had mostly moved out of the state by Sunday morning, but officials warned that roads would remain slick after around two feet (60 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas of the Sierra.
“Did anyone have the snowiest day of the 2023/2024 season being in May on their winter bingo card?” the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab asked on the social platform X.
The 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) of snowfall on Sunday beat the second snowiest day of the season — March 3rd — by 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters), according to the lab.
Treacherous driving conditions on Saturday forced the closure of several highways near Lake Tahoe, including Interstate 80 over the Donner Summit.
Flood advisories were issued for parts of the Bay Area, where up to an inch (2.5 centimeters) of rain fell while temperatures dipped into the low 40s (around 5 degrees Celsius), the National Weather Service said. Wind gusts reaching 40 mph (64 kph) were reported Saturday near San Francisco.
The storm brought light rain and gusty winds to Southern California.
Drier and warmer conditions were expected throughout the week.
I-95 in Connecticut closed, video shows bridge engulfed in flames following crash: Watch
A multi-vehicle collision on thursday caused a gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above i-95 in connecticut, near norwalk..
Authorities in Connecticut have begun demolition work on an Interstate 95 overpass that was damaged in a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles in the early morning hours of Thursday.
"Work to remove the damaged structure began at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3, and crews will continue working on this around the clock through the weekend," Governor Ned Lamont's office said in a statement Friday afternoon. "Once the bridge is removed, sections of I-95 will be milled and paved in both directions in the area."
The highway remains closed in both directions to all traffic, said the governor's office, and travelers have been strongly advised to avoid the area or use the I-84 as an alternate.
Commuters were also advised to use the MetroNorth Railroad, which will have additional rail services over the weekend , if they need to travel. Authorities have also requested drivers to be patient, follow all posted signage and visit CTroads.org for the latest updates before making any travel plans.
The governor's office hopes that the busy highway is reopened by the morning rush hour commute on Monday.
"Heroic local and state first responders got the crash cleared and the fire under control yesterday, and now the amazing team with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, as well as our contractor teams, are going to be working all weekend under immense pressure to get the highway reopened," the governor said in a statement.
Watch flames: Photos and video show massive fire erupt at iconic Oceanside Pier in California
Why is Interstate 95 in Connecticut closed?
Around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, a multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer, a fuel truck and another vehicle took place on I-95 in southwest Connecticut. The accident caused the gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above the interstate.
Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said no serious injuries or fatalities were reported from the crash.
Video footage from the incident shows the tanker engulfed in flames underneath a bridge surrounded by black clouds of smoke as firefighters attempt to douse the fire.
The governor declared state of emergency to help "expedite some of the resources needed for us to respond to this situation". Under this, the governor office and CDOT have requested the Federal Highway Administration Friday for "an expedited release of $3 million to assist with the initial response."
"The bridge was damaged. The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down," Lamont had said during a news conference Thursday evening.
Interstate 95 is now heavily damaged, creating traffic headache for travelers
Although the overpass was less than 10 years old, according to Connecticut DOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, it sustained "pretty severe" damage due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker truck when it burst into flames. Gas from the tanker caused the steel within the bridge to overheat and warp, Eucalitto added.
Eucalitto said that crews with CDOT and contractor staff will be working 24/7 over the weekend to "get I-95 reopened by Monday morning."
William Turner, state emergency management director, in a news conference Thursday had said that about 6,500 gallons of fuel was burned in the fire, and that state environmental agencies are investigating the foam and gas runoff that flowed into the nearby Norwalk River and to empty the remaining 2,000 gallons of gas in the tanker.
Travelers in the area were stuck in traffic for hours as the northbound and southbound lanes near the exit remained closed as of Thursday night.
Interstate 95 is used by more than 100,000 drivers in the state per day as of September, according to Connecticut DOT's traffic data . The highway connects New York City to Connecticut and Rhode Island.
