Pros and Cons of Slide out

Having a slide out in your RV makes it completely different game. Here are the pros of having a slide in your camper.

1. Provides extra space

A slide out in a camper is great innovation that provides you extra space that can be collapsed while travelling. You can have long lengthy RV but having a wide RV is not possible. A bigger width makes a great home like living space using a slide.

2. More sleeping capacity

Enjoy more sleeping capacity when you have that slide out on your camper. Most slide have dinette that are convertible into beds. Some also include bunk bed inside the slide out.

Though it may seem that having a slide out is a must and very advantageous it does have some disadvantage as well. Before you close your eyes and make a purchase read below points about cons of slide out in campers.

1. Overall weight increases

A slide out does give you that extra space but it dramatically increases the weight of the RV. Though it may seem like a compact package, the weight is equivalent to a longer RV. Hauling a heavy travel trailer as you know is difficult and puts extra stress on you as a driver and on the car or truck as well.

2. Reduces mileage of the car

Towing a heavier travel trailer means less miles per gallon for your car or truck. This can add up when you travel a lot. The weight added by slide out can really make the difference especially if you want to travel on budget this will not make sense.

3. Mechanical Issues

Any moving parts in your RV will face issue over time. Stuck slide is a common issue if it is not maintained properly. Though such problems will be rare, but having such a issue will cost you much on repairs.

4. Leaks in and around slides

If you ask a RVers who faced leaks n the RV , where the leaks were. Many would answer it was near their slide. A moving slide with gaps has greater tendency of leaks specially if it is not maintained properly.

Now you know the top 10 best small travel trailers with slide-outs!

They rank high because of their unique towability, quality, construction, floor plan layouts, space, and other bonus features. All these units are tested and trusted for comfort, functionality, versatility, flexibility, and convenience.

The Lite Craft Trailers features a king-size bed in the rear, a toilet, shower, and sink with plenty of storage space.

8 Great Small Travel Trailers With Slide Outs

A slide-out is a great feature for any travel trailer, but it comes in especially handy when the model is a small one to begin with. If you’re looking for a camper that’s relatively easy to tow while providing a generous amount of living space, take a look at this list of great small travel trailers with slide out.

2021 Forest River R-Pod 190

What Are Slide Outs?

Invented in the 1990s, slide outs became popular when RV manufacturers realized that there was a way to add more living space to a travel trailer without increasing its length. Essentially, a slide out is an additional room in the RV, albeit one that doesn’t have a door.

There are two different types of slide out available: Hydraulic and electric. The hydraulic version is more complex and uses a supplementary pump or motor to extend the slide out, while electric ones run on the RV’s own power system. Whichever version your trailer has, it should extend and retract easily, with no sticking.

The average slide out will extend 2-3 feet along the outside of your travel trailer, but some are larger. Obviously, the larger the slide out is, the more extra space you’ll be getting when it’s fully extended.

Important Considerations

Before investing in a travel trailer with a slide out, remember that your campsite or parking spot will have to be large enough to accommodate the extra bulk. This isn’t a deal breaker for most people, but it’s still something to be aware of, particularly if you’re looking for a small camper to begin with.

While both hydraulic and electric systems are fairly easy to operate, they do represent yet another aspect of the trailer that will require regular maintenance. Some buyers decide that the hassle of a slide out isn’t worth the additional space.

Additionally, you’ll need to make sure that you’re not taking advantage of the slide out to overload the trailer. Manufacturers don’t typically provide information about how much weight the slide out can hold, so take care to ensure that you remain within the rig’s ovarall weight capacity.

Best Small Travel Trailers With Slide Out: Product Review Guide

The sweet little R-Pod 190 is one of the most compact units available, with a dry weight of 2979 pounds. Because it measures just over 20 feet in length, it’s remarkably easy to tow, and finding a campsite should be a cinch.

The U-shaped dinette is located in the rear and forms the focal point of the living space, with the entertainment center on the facing wall. A sleeping area with a queen-sized bed and wardrobe takes up residence on the other end. The kitchen area is small yet functional, with a sink, refrigerator, and two-burner range. If you enjoy cooking alfresco, there’s an outdoor kitchen option as well. The bathroom layout separates the stall shower and the toilet, so two people can use the facilities at once.

Manufacturers Website

Even lighter than the R-Pod 190 is the Lance 1575, with a dry weight of 2775 pounds. This unit also has a more minimalist feel, with an interior that’s functional rather than frilly. If you’re a former tent enthusiast who just wants a place to sleep off the ground, this could be the model for you.

A queen-sized bed dominates the sleeping area, which is located just to the right of the entrance. The slide out accommodates a U-shaped dinette, which provides sleeping space for two more people if necessary. In our opinion, the convertible dinette is better suited for small children than adults.

The kitchen includes a refrigerator and stove with three-burner range. There is a shower available in the tiny bathroom, separated from the commode by a simple curtain. This unit doesn’t provide a glamping experience, but it’s a great fit for adventurous couples or small families.

The ingenious design of the Sportsmen Classic 181BH includes a set of rear bunk beds that bumps the maximum sleep count up to 6. The dinette, which is located in the single slide out, can be converted into a bed as well.

Pass-through storage is located above the queen-sized bed, which makes up the main sleeping area. Across from the dinette is the kitchen, with a sink, refrigerator, microwave, and two-burner range. The bathroom is adjacent to the bunk area and includes a stall shower and toilet.

In addition to the slide out, the Sportsmen Classic 181BH is equipped with a 9-foot awning to help maximize the living space. We wouldn’t recommend this model for couples, as the bathroom is so far away from the master bedroom, but it’s ideal for families with older children.

Take a look at the Hummingbird 17RK if roomy kitchen facilities rank high on your hit parade. The rear-facing kitchen, which is one of the most attractive we’ve seen in small travel trailers , is distinguished by an exceptional amount of storage and counter space. In addition to the sink, two-burner range, refrigerator, and microwave, the space includes a generously-sized pantry for dry goods. Because the U-shaped dinette is located in the slide out, you’ll have more space to move around as well.

Rounding out the facilities are a bathroom with a stall shower and toilet, as well as a sleeping area with a wardrobe and television set. We don’t love the fact that you can only watch TV from the bed, but depending on how often you like to tune in, this might not be an issue.

The Palomini 182SK is surprisingly roomy as small travel trailers go, offering rear entry that allows for easy access to the bathroom. While we appreciate this thoughtful touch, it’s just one of the reasons to consider this unit.

The slide out houses the kitchen facilities, which consist of a refrigerator, sink, two-burner range, and overhead storage. A cozy dinette, which can be converted to a second sleeping area, features an overhead storage unit as well. The master bedroom includes two wardrobes in addition to a queen-sized bed. As for the rear-facing bathroom, it’s outfitted with a toilet, sink, linen cabinet, and convenient corner-stall shower.

Although the unit offers a decent amount of elbow room, we still think it’s better suited to couples than families. The dinette is fine when it’s being used as a table, but when it’s converted to a bed, it’s too small to be comfortable for anyone but a very young child.

Like the Palomini 182SK, the Geo Pro G19FBS offers a rear bathroom that’s located directly across from the entrance. This configuration improves the overall flow of the living space, and the convenience is hard to beat. The fridge and microwave are positioned just inside the door as well, so you can grab a cold one or a quick snack before dashing back outside to join the rest of the group. There’s also an outdoor gas griddle to allow for easy outdoor dining.

Inside, you’ll find a convertible sofa, entertainment center, and sleeping area with queen-sized bed. The interior kitchen includes a sink and a stove with a two-burner range, along with the microwave and refrigerator. Still, the Geo Pro 19FBS is geared toward all the fun you can have outside the trailer. We’re especially fond of the outdoor speaker, which makes it possible to jam out to tunes while you’re chilling in the great outdoors.

Duck beneath the generous 11-foot awning and through the rear entry of the Rockwood Mini Lite 1909S, a gorgeous diminutive offering from Forest River. Once through the door, you’ll have quick access to the bathroom facilities, which include a corner stall shower in addition to the toilet and sink. You can also install an entertainment center just inside the door, making it easy to watch the news from anywhere inside the trailer.

As slides go, this one is especially well-equipped, holding overhead storage as well as a convertible sofa and table. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, sink, and three-burner range, so you can prepare all your favorite meals in style. While the master bedroom is slightly cramped, it does make room for a small nightstand and an overhead storage unit.

Unlike the other models listed here, which use the slides to hold convertible dining or seating areas, this one features a rear slide out with a king-sized bed. While it’s unusual to have the master bedroom located in the slide out, it’s a cool feature that opens up the rest of the living space.

To the right of the main entrance are a set of bunk beds, large enough for teenagers or young adults to sleep in comfort. The bathroom is located adjacent to this sleeping area and includes a full tub, toilet, sink, and linen closet. The kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, pantry, three-burner range, and large sink. There’s also a second outdoor kitchen with an additional sink and two-burner range.

Relax on the sofa or convertible dinette and enjoy the wall-mounted LCD television, which can also be viewed from the slide-out master bedroom. The Outback 210URS offers plenty of exterior storage, including room for bicycles beneath the bunk area.

The Bottom Line

When you buy a travel trailer with a slide out, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your living conditions during your travel adventures. This is especially important if space constraints require you to buy a camper that measures under 24 feet in length. While these units require a bit of extra work, we think they’re well worth the effort.

Best of luck, and happy camping!

Best Small Travel Trailers with Slide Outs

travel trailers with 1 slide out

Small travel trailers with slide outs are a wonderful option for RV owners that want something lightweight and compact while also providing the convenience of additional space. Below is our list of some of the smallest travel trailers with slide outs.

Best Small Travel Trailers With Slide Outs

1. 2019 Winnebago Minnie Drop 170K 2. 2018 Winnebago Minnie 2401RG 3. 2020 Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S 4. 2019 StarCraft Satellite 17RB 5. 2019 Lance 1575 6. Keystone 22RBPR Bullet Premier

2019 Winnebago Minnie Drop 170K

A consistent winner

In an industry defined by its lack of quality control, Winnebago stands out for its excellence. Their Trailers and RVs are some of the highest-rated campers on the market. So what makes the 170k stand out above the rest? It’s the attention to the details that the average customer might miss at a glance. They care more about the life of the product than the quick sale. The 170K is proof of this in lots of little ways, and a few big ones. Winnebago’s standards are just a step higher than the rest, and that shows in the lifespan of their products.

T60 Fiberglass

Let’s start with the Fiberglass. Many times these fiberglass units, though good quality, are created with vulnerabilities. The sections of fiberglass are pieced together. The seems in these pieces, after some wear, become openings for moisture. The sides of Winnebago RVs and trailers use the T60 Fiberglass/Gel Coat. These sections of the Fiberglass sidewall cover the entire sides of the trailer which leaves few potential entry points for the moisture to penetrate.

In case you don’t know, this is the type of fiberglass construction that is typically used on the high-end $70k to $90k units. You get this by default on this $27,000 unit.

Plywood Instead of Particle Board

Winnebago utilizes plywood in their construction which goes a long way in preventing water damage. If you have spent any time with RVs, you will know that this is the number one killer of RVs and trailers.

First, particle boards are more prone to being stripped by the screws. This weakens the hold that binds trailers together which adds to the squeaks and vulnerability to moisture. Plywood is a standard for Winnebago. It is less prone to this stripping. It will still happen eventually. Bouncing down the road will do that. The benefit is that plywood holds together, so you will have more time before any repairs are needed.

Second, particle boards soak up moisture easily. Both of them can soak in water. However, plywood is less susceptible to this type of damage. Particleboard is more likely to swell and expand with water, and that warping can cause permanent damage to the trailer. Having a bit more protection can go a long way on that rainy day.

For such a small unit, there is a decent amount of storage space. Nothing massive, but space is utilized very well, and it should easily hold the necessities.

Outdoor Kitchen

This is nice for an outdoor kitchen in a small unit. The pop-out kitchen contains a two-burner stove and sink and a TV wall mount with appropriate hookups: antenna and wall sockets. There is a mini-fridge for your drinks and a quick-connect barbecue connector.

Large U-shaped Dinette

While the 170k only sleeps 4 people, the dinette sits 6 adults. You can have some friends over without retreating to the outdoors. That’s a nice feature for all of you more sociable characters.

2018 Winnebago Minnie 2401RG

At nearly 28′, I struggled to decide if this trailer is too big to belong on the list. However, the Winnebago Minnies offer too much to pass on this one. It is small enough to be manageable and inexpensive enough to stay in many beginner budgets.

Indoor Kitchen

Being 28 feet long, Winnebago was able to fit a bit more inside than the previous 17 feet long unit. The previous trailer had an outdoor kitchen; this one is large enough to have one indoors. It contains a vertically stacked microwave, 3-range stovetop, and oven. The countertop stop is spacious that can be expanded further with the use of cutting board quality sink covers. The deep stainless steel sinks and high-rise faucet are nice touches that should not be forgotten. There is also a fridge/freezer combo that can seamlessly switch between both gas and electric.

Plenty of Storage

Thanks to a clever utilization of space, there is plenty of interior storage space. Near the door, a large compartment can hold whatever might normally clutter up a home’s entrance: shoes, bags, etc. A massive closet is set in the center of the trailer, and it is accessible to everyone. There is a smaller closet located inside the master bedroom. You will also find storage underneath and behind the jackknife couch . Finally, cabinets abound and should be enough for whatever storage needs that you have.

Externally, you have the large storage space that comes with most units. For your convenience, the magnetic luggage locks come on every unit. It’ll keep those vertically flipped doors from swinging down on their hinges and smacking you on the head.

Quality Construction Touches

Did I mention that I love Winnebago? They are a standout company for so many reasons. These are a few of the quality construction reasons that I recommend this unit:

  • T60 Fiberglass / Gel Coat (Look at the previous unit for more details)
  • Plywood instead of particle board – Higher quality and less susceptible to damage
  • Huck Bolt Frame – Easier to replace and it doesn’t rust as easily
  • Fresh: 43 Gallons
  • Grey: 41 Gallons
  • Exterior Height: 10 Feet, 6 Inches
  • Exterior Length: 27 Feet, 11 Inches
  • Dry Weight: 5,300 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 6,869 Pounds
  • 2 Entrance Bathroom with Porcelain Toilet and Roomy Shower
  • Black Tank Flush – For Easy Cleaning
  • 13,500 BTU Air-conditioner
  • Related Floor Plans: 12
  • Average Price: $17,150

2020 Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S

I am trying not to say the same benefits to each of these units, but the truth is, good RVs and trailers contain a lot of the same basic features: Reliable construction, lots of storage, and room to live. At least, these are some of the features that I look for in mobile homes.

Slide Out Space

There are plenty of reasons to love the Mini Lite 2509S travel trailer , but there are downsides to everything. Thankfully, this particular downside is just an occasional irritation. When traveling, the space where the slide-out retracts can be annoying and a bit difficult to maneuver.

The dinette seating is nearly wedged against the kitchen counter. You can make it through the space, but you are forced to make a tall step over it. If you have advanced mobility issues, this could be occasionally problematic.

When extended, this intrusive seating is not a problem. You actually have a ton of room at that point. It has been commented that you have space reminiscent of a super slider rather than what you might expect from a name that includes “Mini Lite.”

Well utilized space; that about sums it up. You’ll find storage in every nook and cranny on this thing. Tiny spaces get tiny cabinets. The larger ones often have outside access ports. One of the hanging closets can be converted into a pantry if desired. You probably won’t be lacking space.

The beds/couches are fantastic

The industry standard for mattresses has degraded. Now, the too-thin mattresses require a costly upgrade to be comfortable. Rockwood is one of the few remaining companies that give thick, quality mattresses by default; twice the thickness of most mattresses on the market.

Their murphy bed is also very comfortable, and they offer a couple more features than your typical trailer. First, the pop-out footrests. The seating is very similar to the kind that you expect from modern theaters. On each side of the murphy bed, there are tray tables that can swivel from the armrest to the people sitting on each side of the bed/couch.

If you do not personally appreciate this convenience, it can easily be removed. They are not attached by bolts or screws, so you can simply pull up to pop them off of the armrests.

The one downside to the murphy bed is the lack of separation from the rest of the room. You do have a privacy curtain, though standard, I’ve never fully been able to appreciate. I like having my own room. It does give you an illusion of privacy which will probably work well enough for the average consumer.

The Lighting

All of the lights can be controlled in a typical fashion. Throw the switch, and the connected lights turn off. In addition to this, each of the lights can be pressed like a button to turn them off and on individually.

The Suspension

Better than most, some say that it is the “best in class,” and I wouldn’t disagree. The four-wheel independent torsion axle suspension system is fantastic and will put most comparable units to shame. When you find yourself on uneven terrain, you will appreciate having wheels with independent suspension. It gives you more control over the trailer when wheels keep bumping off of the ground. Also, it improves your cornering since it has an improved capability to keep contact with the ground.

Plywood Flooring

As I mentioned before, plywood flooring is great. It holds up better than particle board when it comes up against the elements. I don’t want to rehash, so look under the Minnie Drop 170K for more details.

The Grill Master’s Choice

If you love to grill, you will be happy to hear that the 2509S has a built-in pop-out Capital grill. That sounds good on its own, but that isn’t what makes this unit special. It also has a hookup for an additional grill right beside it.

If you need some counter space, you can use the Captain grill as a surface. It gains you a little bit of additional space, but not much. The cover for the grill does provide a flat surface, but that surface isn’t level with the rest of the counter. It is useful though, so it isn’t a wash.

2019 StarCraft Satellite 17RB

Why you will like it

The 17RB wasn’t built to be a fully-featured trailer with all the trimmings. It’s a compact unit; built to be towed by most SUVs. It’s short and narrow structure means that you will make sacrifices that most couples will not want to make. It is a situational recommendation.

As a long term unit, this will not be ideal. It does make a fantastic short-term weekend-camper for a couple with a child. If you happen to be single, then the full-time camping could work out. However, I would still recommend another unit for you.

Kitchen Slide

The kitchen is set on a slide which gives you a bit of extra room. It goes a long way in making the space more livable.

Sloped Fiberglass Roof

The roof of the 17RB is a long single piece of fiberglass that stretches from one end to the other. It eliminates many of the seams that would normally find on the roof of a trailer. This limits the vulnerability to moisture in a big way. The slope of the roof improves protection against the rain by running the water straight off of the camper instead of overflowing off of the sides.

Same Features at a Sample Size

When I mentioned sacrifices, I didn’t necessarily mean that you would go without features. It would best be described as sample-sized features. It is a free-trial trailer meant to entice you into committing to the subscription of a full-time camping RV.

Yikes, yeah, I know that’s a big one. The trailer is a hair under 20 feet long and 1 ½ feet narrower than the average trailer width , so there wasn’t much that could be done about it. That’s one reason why this will be perfect for a short-term camper, but not great for a long-term situation. I will say that they placed cabinets wherever they could.

The Bathroom Is a Little Bit Claustrophobic

The bathroom is located at the end of the 17RB, and the roof has a slope to it. You can probably guess the situation from that. The toilet and sink is located under the slope which means that if you are a man with an average height will need to lower your head just a tiny bit in that area.

It actually isn’t as bad as it sounds. When you are sitting on the toilet, you have plenty of space. The area to the front and sides doesn’t squeeze you, so you can probably sit like you normally do.

The shower is probably the worst part of the trailer. A six-foot-tall person will feel their hair brushing against the roof. And the narrow confines of the shower will mean that your arms will have a difficult time staying within the bounds of the shower curtain.

Bedding for three, but a table for two

The dinette does transform into a bed, so this camper works for those couples with a small child. The bed is a bit too small for most adults, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone fully grown. The one problem I have with this dinette/bed is the incongruence of having bedding for three people and a table that only has enough room for two.

2019 Lance 1575

Need something really small and lightweight? Of course, sacrifices must be made.

You won’t want to live in this camper, but this will be perfect for anyone that is constantly a weekend away from a camping trip. It doesn’t have all the features, but it is a great little trailer.

Under 3,000 dry weight

As I said, lightweight; weighing in at 2,775 pounds (Dry Weight), this trailer won’t even tax your average minivan. This makes the Lance 1575 an accessible starting trailer

Truma Hot Water System

The Truma Hot Water System is actually pretty cool. Not only does it quickly heat your water supply for your shower and tap, but it doubles as a heating system for your trailer. If you are paying good money to heat up the water, it just makes sense to use any escaping heat to keep yourself warm. I’ve read that it can make as much as a 7-degree difference.

Natural Lighting

One comment that seems to be said again and again regards all of the natural light that the skylights and windows open to the inside of the trailer.

More than just being powered, the 1575’s tongue jack will recall its last used height. This will make it easier to raise and lower the trailer off and onto your hitch.

The Large Front Window Opens

If you start to feel a bit too warm in the summer, you can simply pop open the sizeable window that is located at the front of the trailer. It will go a long way in cooling you off during those hot and dry summer days

The Dinette

Taking full advantage of the slide-out, the dinette is much larger than you would expect. It’s u-shaped, and as is traditional, transforms into a bed. What isn’t traditional is the length. It is wide, but it isn’t quite as wide as the spacious 22RB dinette/bed. It is, however, very long. Individuals a bit over 6 feet will stretch out comfortably without raising their feet over the cushions.

The Bathroom

I don’t know how, but Lance somehow managed to fit a bathtub into this tiny trailer. The toilet is a bit closer to the tub than I would like, but it’s a worthwhile concession to be able to have a nightly soak. There is a medicine cabinet, but there wasn’t room for any other storage.

Huge Outdoor Storage, Little Indoor Storage

Inside the trailer, there isn’t much storage. It will likely be problematic at times. This is partially countered by having an abundance of outdoor storage. Two massive compartments will hold pretty much anything that you might want to store.

Counter Space

The counter space can be both good and bad. If the sink and stove are left open, there is honestly not a lot of counter space. However, if you use the provided covers for both the sink and three-burner stove, you will find the counter space to actually be quite comfortable. The stove is flush with the counter, and I love that. I also love the stove’s cover which is glass and folds to the back. It looks clean.

Slide Out Slides Way Out

The slide-out extends out very far which could raise stability and durability concerns. However, the double rack and pinion setup is a very stable system and handles the weight with ease. There is also a slide topper above that helps to prevent dirt and rust from damaging the seals.

Solid Construction

A lot of times, the light-weight units sacrifice the quality of their construction to save on weight. The metal is a bit thinner, there is a bit less wood, and ideal parts are traded for lightweight counterparts. That isn’t the case here. You can really feel the difference in the solid plywood construction.

The quality of their work is well-known. They also have a reputation for backing their warranties . You are unlikely to be left in a bad situation.

Keystone 22RBPR Bullet Premier

Two Kitchens

This trailer is perfect for those that love to cook. You get two kitchens, and both of them are well-designed.

Inside Kitchen

In the indoor kitchen, you have a sink that is stainless steel, rectangular, under-mounted, and huge. The high rise faucet only makes your time the kitchen easier. There are a sufficient amount of kitchen cabinets. The trailer has an oven with a three burner stove .

The counter space can either be decent or great depending on what is covered. The sink comes with a cutting board quality cover and the stove has a super convenient attached glass cover that cleanly folds to the back; making it a simple switch between counter space and cooking top.

Outdoor kitchen

The hatch to the outdoor kitchen is located near the back of the camper. When open, it covers the kitchen. That covering will not protect the kitchen from rain coming from the side, but it will provide some shade on a sunny day. Inside, you will find a mini-fridge, a two-burner cooktop, plenty of countertop space, a bit of storage, and an admittedly cheap but useful sink. There is also a single outlet for small kitchen appliances.

Around the corner and connected to the bumper is a swing arm attachment for a mountable grill. When connected, you can pivot the grill around that corner and to the outdoor kitchen space. It sounds bulky, but it’s a smooth operation when it’s all in place.

Back inside and opposed to the indoor kitchen is the U-shaped dinette. It is above average in size, and it doesn’t just barely seat four people; it seats those four people pretty comfortably. The only complaint that I have is common to almost all trailers. It’s that the table supports hinder your legroom. When the dinette is transformed into a bed, that bed is sizable enough to sleep, two people.

A Private Bedroom

If you’ve lived in a small trailer before, you probably know that privacy is very hard to find. The cramped quarters rarely leave room for solitude, and a nice walk is usually the only way to get it. That’s not the case here. You can have your very own room with the 22RB. Contained inside is a residential queen bed, plenty of storage that includes two hanging closets, and a couple of nightstands. The room, cabinets, and finishings are all beautifully themed.

On the downside, you don’t have a lot of room, so you’ll probably find yourself crawling over the bed to access some of the storage.

Considering the size of the trailer, the bathroom is surprisingly comfortable. From a visual standpoint, the porcelain toilet can look a bit cramped. However, when you are sitting on it, you’ll be surprised by how much room you actually have.

The shower is roomy. You get quite a bit of headroom, and the space around your body is ample. The shower is contained in glass which is a nice upgrade from a flimsy curtain. It keeps the water contained and won’t look as ratty over time.

There is a noteworthy amount of storage in the bathroom. The area above the toilet is so large that you could probably climb into it. You’ve also got the typical storage from cabinets and drawers, but those spaces are topped off with an oversized linen closet. The trailer sleeps 3 to 4 people, and they designed the linen closet to hold a generous amount of space for each of them.

This particular trailer separates the front and back tires a bit farther than most. This increased separation improves the stability of the overall unit. This is due to the wider stance lowering the overall center of gravity.

Travel Trailers with Slide-Outs on Both Sides

Finding travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides is easier than you think. One of the main ways that RV manufacturers create more space inside of an RV is by using slide-outs. But what exactly is a slide-out and what can you expect out of owning a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides?

In this article, we will go over everything you need to know about travel trailers that have slide-outs on both sides. We will address some of the pros and cons of owning an RV of this style as well as what you should consider before purchasing an RV or travel trailer of any type.

Whether you are purchasing a travel trailer for the first time or simply want to upgrade your rig to something with slide-outs on both sides, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started and talk all about travel trailers with multiple slide-outs now!

Only interested in seeing our list of some of the most unique and interesting travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides? Use our table of contents to navigate to this list of choices now!

Pros and Cons of Travel Trailers with Slide-Outs on Both Sides

The majority of travel trailers and RVs these days are built with slide-outs, but not all RVs are built with slide-outs on both sides. What might some of the pros and cons be? Would you be interested in purchasing an RV with slide-outs on both sides? Here are some potential reasons, both for and against:

  • More interior living space . The main reason to opt for a travel trailer with multiple slide-outs is the fact that it will give you much more interior living space than the average rig. The reason that slide-outs were invented in the first place was so that RVs could have more living room without causing more difficulties when driving on the road, and having travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides means that you have even more living space than the average rig!
  • More maintenance . It’s not a secret that slide-outs require more maintenance than the average RV feature. You will need to lubricate and clean your slide-outs regularly, or else you risk long-term damage and issues with your RV. Plus, slide-outs need to be carefully maintained in terms of their levelness, and debris or water needs to be cleared off the top of every slide-out before you pull it in. Otherwise, these substances can fall into your RV, something you definitely don’t want! Leaking slide-outs are also a common issue for most RVers, so be sure to keep your slide-outs well-maintained at all times.
  • Easy to operate . For the most part, slide-outs are easy to operate and set up, often activating with the touch of a button. Even manual slide-outs are fairly easy to set up, though you should keep in mind whether or not you want to use slide-out jack stands or leveling systems before you get to camp.
  • Takes extra work when packing up . Not only do you need to make sure that the interior of your RV is ready for your slide-outs to slide back in, but you also need to make sure that each and every slide-out you use is clean from the outside as well. If you want a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides, your primary living space needs to be clear before you retract them, as this could cause you issues if you have items or debris in the way of your slide-out track. Plus, slide-out stabilizers and awnings need to be properly packed away as well, which may take more time than you expect if you are new to camping!
  • More windows . For the most part, slide-outs have windows built into them, often more than the average RV would have without slide-outs. This means that your RV will be light, bright, and more welcoming. the point of camping is to enjoy the great outdoors, so having more windows onboard your RV is often a preference of many RVers and campers!
  • Less insulation . On the flip side, slide-outs typically have less insulation built in compared with the rest of your RV. This is especially true if you have more windows, as RV manufacturers typically don’t utilize well-insulated windows. If you purchase a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides, be prepared for the possibility that your rig is both colder in the winter and hotter in the summer, depending on the season. You may feel like you are wasting more electricity and utilities than you planned!
  • You potentially won’t need as long of a rig . There are only two ways that you can create more interior living space inside of a travel trailer. You can either purchase a travel trailer that is incredibly long or purchase a travel trailer with multiple slide-outs. Many people opt for a rig with multiple slide-outs so that they feel more in control while driving their travel trailer down the road. You can find 20 to 25 feet long travel trailers with slide-outs, creating much more interior living space than a regular 20-foot-long travel trailer has on its own!
  • You may not be able to use your slides all the time . The ultimate downside to purchasing a travel trailer with multiple slide-outs is the fact that you may or may not be able to use all of your slide-outs all of the time. There are multiple campgrounds or RV parks that don’t allow for enough space, width-wise. This means that you likely won’t be able to deploy both sides of your slide-outs, and some campgrounds may be too small and compact that you won’t even be able to use any slide-outs!

What to Consider in a Travel Trailer with Slide-Outs on Both Sides

Now that you’ve heard some of the pros and cons of owning a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides, here are even more considerations for you to take a look at.

Length and Weight

No matter what style of travel trailer you are looking for, knowing how much you can safely tow is important and the first place to begin. The length and weight of your travel trailer will be necessary to consider before you fall in love with any particular make or model of a travel trailer!

You can find travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides in just about every length and weight. This means that your tow vehicle will determine the overall size and weight of the RV that you ultimately end up purchasing.

There are travel trailers under 25 feet long with slide-outs on both sides, but you’re more likely to find something that’s between 30 to 40 feet long. The longer the travel trailer, the more difficult it will be to drive , so make sure you are comfortable with whatever option you end up choosing.

If you don’t have a vehicle that you plan on towing your RV with yet, you should opt for something that can tow at least 5,000 pounds, to be on the safe side. Many travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides weigh closer to 8,000 pounds when fully loaded, so keep this in mind while shopping! Slide-outs can add a decent amount of weight to your RV.

Layout and Floor Plan

The next thing to consider before purchasing an RV with slide-outs on both sides is the type of layout or floor plan you want. Knowing how many people you plan on camping with is a good place to start, as this will give you a rough estimate of how many sleeping arrangements you need and the seating areas you need.

Otherwise, the sky’s the limit in terms of layouts found on the average travel trailer, especially travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides. You may find spacious living rooms and kitchens as a prevalent feature, especially if you find a travel trailer with a full wall of slide-outs.

There are also travel trailers with master suites and bunkhouses, or you may be looking for a travel trailer with a toy hauler option . No matter the choices you are looking for, I highly recommend touring RVs at RV lots or dealerships so that you get a good feel for certain layouts and floor plans before making a final purchase!

Number of Slide-Outs

Ultimately, you may or may not need to decide how many slide-outs you want in total. For the most part, RV manufacturers don’t give you the option to add or subtract slideouts given the fact that they are inherent to the structural components of any RV. However, you may not want to maintain too many slide-outs, and this is something to keep in mind.

Do you want to avoid having a slide-out in the master suite for insulation purposes, or are you seeking more than two slide-outs so that you can maximize your interior living space? Again, regardless of your ultimate decision, knowing that you will need to maintain each and every single slide-out on board your RV is important to keep in mind as you shop!

Luxurious Amenities

Some travel trailers are more luxurious than others, so having a good idea as to the number of luxurious amenities you want is a good place to start. You may be seeking multiple air conditioners, upgraded upholstery, and furnishings, or perhaps you want a travel trailer with a more residential feel to live in full-time .

No matter what you want, having a list of must-haves and dreams in mind before you start shopping is a good idea. Note that there is a difference between your dream RV and your RV that has all the essentials, and you may find that one is far more affordable than the other!

Thankfully, there are travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides available for just about any price range or budget. While a more luxurious RV will have efficient and easy-to-care-for slide-outs, the average-priced RV will too!

Boondocking Amenities

Do you want to take your brand-new RV off-grid or camp in locations without traditional RV utilities? Choosing a travel trailer with boondocking amenities is a good idea if this is a priority for you, as not every RV prioritizes this.

While all RVs are technically made to boondock for a short period of time, you may want an option with more off-grid capabilities. Some of these amenities may include solar panels, additional batteries, raised chassis options, 4-season weather capabilities, and off-road tires.

Regardless of what you are looking for, there’s a travel trailer with plenty of boondocking features available for you. In fact, most RVs these days are equipped with some amount of boondocking capabilities, though more amenities will come at a higher price!

Maintenance and Repairs

As we’ve already discussed, travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides may need more maintenance and repairs than you first expected. Travel trailers need plenty of maintenance on their own, from the roof to the propane lines, but more slide-outs than the average rig means even more repairs need to be made over time.

As a full-timer living in a travel trailer, I have a list of scheduled maintenance and repairs that I stick to throughout the year. Depending on how often you use your RV, you may want to do the same, though all RVs need maintenance, no matter how much you use them!

Choosing something that feels manageable for your skill level is a good idea, though there are always RV repair shops found throughout the country. In addition, if you purchase a brand new RV, it should come with warranty plans and opportunities that you can take advantage of, depending on what maintenance your RV needs.

A final consideration for you to think about before you purchase an RV is how much you plan on spending. Travel trailers are among the least expensive RVs on the market today, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t pricey. This is especially true if you are looking for something large or more mechanical, such as a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides.

Depending on the make, model, and amenities included, you may spend anywhere from $20k to $80k on a travel trailer. The price only increases if you add more amenities or features to your RV, and the purchase price quoted initially is often not the price you end up paying at the end of the day.

However, all RV dealerships and manufacturers offer loans and other payment plans in case you can’t pay for the entire rig up front. Keep in mind that RVs do indeed depreciate quickly, so you likely won’t get back what you paid for it if you choose to sell!

This is why it’s important to consider how often you plan on camping and using your RV so that you don’t purchase something that feels wasteful.

Now that you have checked out our pros and cons list as well as our list of considerations, here’s our list of seven unique travel trailers with slide-outs on both sides. Hopefully one of these options speaks to you!

Best Overall: Jayco Eagle HT

  • A few double slide-out floor plans to choose from
  • Beautiful and elegant interior design
  • Plenty of features that you can add on as you choose
  • A bit heavy for the average tow vehicle

Starting at $57k, the Eagle HT from Jayco is a great choice for a number of RVers, both experienced and brand-new. With 5 available floor plans, only two of which offer double slides on both sides, you may not have as many options as other RVs on this list. However, there’s a lot to love about this option from Jayco . Let’s check it out now!

The Eagle ranges in length from 33 to 39 feet long, making it ideal for families as well as groups that enjoy spreading out. In terms of its options for floor plans with slide-outs on both sides, it has two options, one of which has multiple bunk beds so that you can sleep the whole family or a large group of people.

One of the best things about this particular travel trailer is the fact that it has multiple options for you to choose from, even though it will result in an increase in the initial purchase price. However, you can add a built-in generator, multiple solar panels, an additional air conditioning unit, and much more, if you so choose.

In terms of its interior design, you have modern and contemporary finishes. The materials that Jayco uses are more upscale and luxurious compared to the average RV manufacturer, something that you will likely notice upon walking into the RV. This makes the Eagle a great choice for both full-time living as well as the average weekend warrior looking to camp in style.

Something to consider about this particular travel trailer is the fact that it weighs roughly 8,000 to 10,000 pounds, depending on the floor plan. Slide-outs are heavier than the average RV material, so it’s likely that the slide-out floor plans that you are looking for weigh more than average.

However, so long as you have the vehicle to tow it, you won’t have any trouble bringing this RV with you! It is easy to tow and maintain, so long as you stay on top of its maintenance requirements and warranty options.

Best Built: Dutchmen Kodiak Ultimate

  • Fair price point for its size
  • Plenty of double slide-out floor plans to choose from
  • Room for the whole family with bunkhouse floor plans
  • Interior design feels a bit uninspired

If the Jayco Eagle was a bit too heavy for your tow vehicle, you might want to check out the Kodiak Ultimate from Dutchmen. This travel trailer starts at $59k, but it has many double slide-out floor plan options to choose from as well as many different designs as well. Let’s take a closer look at everything this travel trailer has to offer!

The largest floor plan for the Kodiak is 37 feet long, which may make you wonder if it is big enough for you and the whole family. Given the double slide-out floor plan options available, you can easily sleep 8 to 10 people in bunk beds and other sleeping areas. Plus, the Kodiak has a king-size bed for all floor plans so that you will never feel too cramped while you camp.

Speaking of floor plans, four out of the six available floor plans for the Kodiak have double slide-outs on either side. Most of these slide-outs involve moving the kitchen area further out, giving you more room to accommodate a kitchen island or a proper living area and dining room. Otherwise, the slide-outs are located in the bunkhouses and other portions of the RV.

If you don’t recognize the Dutchmen brand name, it might be time to look into it. With fantastic insulation options, including a heated and insulated underbelly for 4-season camping, this RV is well-made and easy to take with you without having to worry about its overall construction. Plus, you can add additional features that make it easy to set up and take down camp.

The interior design of the Kodiak Ultimate isn’t exactly inspired, but it does the trick. This RV is great for those of you that camp during the summertime, but it may feel a bit uninspired if you plan on living in this RV full-time. You can always make it feel at home, but the interior of this RV appears to be more practical than comfortable.

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Northern Spirit Ultra-Lite

  • Lightweight and easy to maneuver
  • Convenient floor plans sleep multiple people
  • Plenty of storage and special touches help you feel at home
  • Only two floor plans with slide-outs on both sides

With nearly every floor plan weighing less than 8000 pounds, the Northern Spirit Ultra-Lite from Coachmen is a great choice for those of you seeking a travel trailer that is easy to tow for the average tow vehicle. Plus, this option is fairly budget-friendly as well, with 2-floor plans offering slide-outs on both sides. Let’s take a closer look.

Coachmen tries to make things convenient for the average camper, and the Northern Spirit might demonstrate this best. There are special touches found throughout this rig that help you adapt to camping life easier than ever before. For example, any floor plan for this particular travel trailer will include pet leash areas, bottle openers, safe and discreet storage areas, and much more.

You got everything you needed to hit the road in style and function, given the fact that the Northern Spirit is lightweight and easy to tow . Plus, you have stabilizers as well as backup camera prep ready to go, giving you another tool to help you safely reach your destination and park there!

While there are only two floor plans with slide-outs on both sides, both are ideal for families or full-timing couples. One of them has multiple bunk beds and the other offers an attractive electric fireplace and spacious living area. There’s even a kitchen island for one of these two floor plans, helping you feel even more at home despite being on the road.

There’s plenty of storage, both inside and out, particularly in overhead storage compartments and exterior pass-through storage bins. You also have easy-to-clean interior design options, making this RV even better for the busy family, especially if you have pets.

However, there may not be enough floor plans for you to choose from, and you may not enjoy the interior design of this RV. It all depends on what you’re looking for, especially when you consider that the price of this RV is right. Just make sure it has all of your needs in a floor plan that works well for your family!

Most Square Footage: Heartland Mallard

  • Open floor plans make this RV easy to live in
  • Multiple double slide-out options to choose from
  • Fantastic interior design touches, including spacious kitchens
  • Fairly long lengths may make this one difficult to drive

Depending on the floor plan you choose, the Heartland Mallard has options that range between 300 to 350 square feet of interior living space. When you consider the average travel trailer without slide-outs, this is a huge leap in square footage! But what else might this travel trailer have to offer you? Let’s take a closer look.

It’s easy to see why someone might live full-time in a Mallard, particularly one that is over 300 square feet. The interior design of this RV is unique and modern, with special touches throughout the rig. For example, the countertops in the kitchen have an infinity line that is attractive and en-vogue right now. There’s also unique flooring throughout.

The exterior is also a marvel, with a rounded front piece of fully laminated fiberglass. This maintains an aerodynamic nature to this particular RV, with a lightweight frame to go hand-in-hand. You can easily drive this travel trailer wherever your journeys take you, though it may be a bit large for the average National Park !

Out of the 14 available floor plans, only three offer slide-outs on both sides. However, these floor plans are convenient and well-thought-out, ideal for both couples and adventurous families out there searching for an RV that fits their lifestyle! There’s definitely enough storage for everyone to bring everything that they want along with them, especially exterior storage.

The open design of the Mallard gives you room for everyone to relax comfortably. There are even some floor plans that have some of the most spacious kitchens that I’ve ever seen on board a travel trailer, something that may matter to my fellow chefs out there!

You also have multiple interior design choices so that you can make this RV exactly how you like. There are many convenient features that you can add as need be, but just keep in mind that this will increase the overall purchase price for this rig. It’s a great choice for those of you seeking something large, but just keep in mind that the double slide-out floor plans are close to 40 feet in length!

Plenty of Storage: Winnebago Voyage

  • Plenty of storage, inside and out
  • Half the floor plans have slide-outs on both sides
  • Residential touches make this RV feel like home
  • A heavy rig, so make sure you can handle it

Starting at $64k, the Winnebago Voyage isn’t the most budget-friendly travel trailer option out there. However, it makes up for this with luxury touches, unique floor plans, and plenty of storage, inside and out. Let’s take a closer look now!

Out of the six available floor plans for the Winnebago Voyage, three of the options have slide-outs on both sides. The smallest double slide-out floor plan starts at 27 feet, making it a reasonable size compared to many other options on this list. The larger floor plans get close to 40 feet long, with the largest option housing a huge bunkhouse suite in the rear.

The interior design of the Voyage is more residential than anything else, which might be appealing to those of you that have owned RVs in the past. Many RVs end up looking the same inside, suited for camping but not much else. The Voyage feels practical as well as comfortable, with electric fireplaces and spacious bathrooms and kitchens, making it better suited for the average family.

One of the main reasons why this RV is popular is because of all of its storage features. You have huge volumes of pass-through storage on the outside of the rig as well as integrated pantry storage solutions inside. Plus, this RV has many other features that make it great for full-time living as well as boondocking.

Some of the additional amenities for the Voyage include washer and dryer prep on select floorplans , an optional king bed upgrade, a 15 cubic foot refrigerator, a residential microwave, and a larger water heater. Plus, most of these floor plans adapt to sleep close to 10 people, depending on the option you choose!

So, what’s the catch on this one? It’s fairly heavy, with a dry weight of 6000 to 10,000 pounds depending on the floor plan. Keep in mind that this weight is without water, Propane, and all of your belongings, so make sure your tow vehicle can handle this one before falling in love!

Best for Families: Cruiser RV Radiance

  • Multiple double slide-out floor plan options to choose from
  • Spacious layout and design for the whole family
  • Budget-friendly so that you can add on more features
  • Interior design is basic but easy to clean

There are only two floor plans with slide-outs on both sides available for the Radiance by Cruiser RV, but these two floor plans are perfect for families. Budget-friendly and fully loaded, the Radiance has a lot to offer both families and groups of friends alike! Let’s take a closer look.

Even the largest double slide-out floor plan is less than $60k to start with, making this option more affordable than many others on this list, particularly the Winnebago Voyage. Plus, this option even has an outdoor kitchen , bunkhouse suite, and a king-size master bedroom with a spacious bathroom and kitchen in between both of these sleeping areas.

The entire underbelly of most of the Radiance floor plans is storage, giving you plenty of space to bring everything you and your family want. You can fit kayaks, bicycles, and much more underneath your RV, or you may even be able to add a rear or rooftop rack to accommodate your recreational items.

This is a great RV for those of you who don’t plan on living in it full-time, as the interior design is a bit bland and easy to overlook. However, for the active family, this RV is easy to clean and maintain, and lightweight enough to tow by the average vehicle. Plus, you likely won’t blow your budget up front, giving you room to choose from a few optional amenities offered by Cruiser RV!

Best for Full-Time Living: Keystone Cougar HT

  • Gorgeous interior and exterior design
  • Fairly lightweight, especially when you consider the length
  • Packed with features that suit full-time living
  • Fairly expensive for a travel trailer

Weighing 8000 pounds or less and fully loaded for full-time living, the Keystone Cougar HT or half-ton is a great choice for those of you hoping to live in your travel trailer full-time. While this luxury travel trailer isn’t the most affordable option on this list, it is truly ready for full-time living and easy to take care of.

There are a whopping six available floor plans that offer you slide-outs on both sides of this particular travel trailer, but that isn’t very many given the fact that the Cougar half-ton has 24 possible floor plans. However, choosing from 6 gives you more options than the other travel trailers on this list!

The interior and exterior of this RV are fully thought out and packed with storage. Plus, the design is easy to recognize and fall in love with, feeling more residential than anything else. You have everything you could need to live in this RV full-time, including washer and dryer prep and convenient living areas.

Keystone is widely regarded as one of the best makers of travel trailers and fifth wheels, offering comprehensive warranty programs and plenty of guidance. No matter what step you’re at in your travel trailer journey, Keystone is there to help! But what is the drawback to the Keystone Cougar?

Depending on the floor plan you choose, you may spend over $70k on this travel trailer, without optional equipment included. However, if you plan on living in your travel trailer full time and you want plenty of interior living space with double slide-outs, this may be your best bet!

Final Thoughts

Whether you want a travel trailer with slide-outs on both sides for the whole family or perhaps you simply want a spacious RV to live in full-time , there are plenty of options to choose from.

Keep our considerations in mind, and enjoy your travel trailer, no matter how many slide-outs it ends up having!

7. Forest River Rockwood Roo 233S

travel trailers with 1 slide out

If you’re thinking the Rockwood Roo 233S looks a lot like the Flagstaff Shamrock 233S from above, that’s for good reason.

As the Roo and the Shamrock are actually sister RVs.

This means that these two trailers are identical except for their interior and exterior color schemes.

You might be wondering though, why would Forest River go to the trouble of making two identical trailers?

Well, this is actually a pretty common practice in the RV industry.

Because it allows two RV dealers close to one another to sell different RV models, preventing them from having to compete on the same model.

Forest River Rockwood Roo 233S Video Walkthrough

So should you go with the Roo or the Shamrock?

Well, there is no one correct answer to this question, as both trailers are pretty the same with exception of their color scheme.

So when deciding between the two trailers, it just comes down to which color scheme you like better or which one you can get a better deal on.

As this trailer cost $20,000 more compared to your basic 24-foot camper.

If you’re someone that likes cold weather camping or looking for a trailer you can live in year-round though, this added cost might be worth it to you.

Updated January 9, 2024

Finding the best travel trailers on the market can be challenging, so we have compiled a list of the 10 best travel trailers under 4000 lbs after visiting RV Shows and dealerships nationwide. There are so many brands and manufacturers out there that finding the right travel trailer for you can be overwhelming.

This is especially true for someone who has no experience in the world of RVs. Narrowing the search by weight is extremely helpful. And, starting your search by looking at these seven options should be a big help to you.

Below, we will start by looking at ten different travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Each has its pros and cons, and we will take you through each in detail.

As we look at each trailer, we will list important stats like the unloaded vehicle weight, MSRP, length, and sleep capacity. Each of these factors is incredibly important to the RV owner and can affect which trailer you end up purchasing.

When you are looking for a travel trailer, there are many things you need to consider. The price is obviously essential for most people.

However, there are other significant factors at play. For example, sleeping capacity is a big deal for families. If you have a large family, you will need a larger trailer with more sleeping space.

However, weight is the biggest factor to consider when purchasing a new or used travel trailer. There is no point in purchasing a new travel trailer only to discover that it exceeds the maximum towing capacity of your towing vehicle.

In fact, we recommend that you tow no more than 80% of the maximum towing capacity of your tow vehicle, just to be on the safe side.

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs may be small, but they are also versatile. Even the ones large enough to comfortably hold 4 people are easier to back into tight spots and, for obvious reasons, consume less power.

You’ll find some of the best floorplans on our list below, from the more extraneous models to more traditional RVs.

1. Lance 1575

Lance 1575 Exterior

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Exceptional storage options, inside and out, including a massive pass-thru

⛔ TV sticks out in front of the open door

  • UVW: 3,590 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 5”
  • GVWR: 4,600 lbs
  • CCC: 1,010 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 350 lbs

Of all the travel trailers under 4000 lbs on our list, the Lance 1575 is probably one of the simplest in design. That’s not a bad thing. It’s a prime example of simple is better, with more storage than you’ll find on most RVs this size.

A large individual can probably climb into the pass-thru storage, not that we’re suggesting such a thing. The point is, it’s that big. Everything on the Lance 1575 serves its purpose and is presented upfront.

For instance, the full gamut of outlets (traditional AC outlets, DC outlets, and USB), are all situated next to the bed, perfect for those who sleep with CPAP devices. If you need it, the odds are good that the Lance 1575 has it.

2. Casita Liberty

Casita Liberty Exterior

✅ Much higher degree of customizable options than traditional RVs

⛔ You have to choose between having a bathroom or sleeping four, with no in-betweens

  • UVW: 2,480 lbs
  • Length: 17′
  • GVWR: 3,750 lbs
  • CCC: 1,270 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 265 lbs
  • Sleep: 2 to 4

It wouldn’t be a proper article about travel trailers under 4000 lbs without a Casita. This is what we’re referring to as the “extraneous” option. Casitas are like Airstreams or Scamps.

They have a large, built-in, and devoted following. It’s mostly because of their unique and highly durable fiberglass bodies and high level of customizable features.

From the large picture windows to the unique, bubble aesthetic, Casita does things a little differently, though no less attractive than the best the industry has to offer.

The Casita Liberty , like all Casitas, comes in a Standard and Deluxe model. If you have a small family, the Standard sleeps 4, while the Deluxe sleeps two but comes with a bath and shower.

3. Grand Design 16BL

Grand Design 16BL Exterior - travel trailers under 4000 lbs

✅ The bar tabletop dinette is a unique twist on the traditional setup

⛔ Shower height barely accommodates 6′

  • UVW: 3,976 lbs
  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • GVWR: 5,495 lbs
  • CCC: 1,519 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 406 lbs

Grand Design has some of the best travel trailers on the market and the Imagine 16BL is one of those.

The high-quality interior materials give this small travel trailer the feel of a much more expensive RV.

A slide-out with a Murphy bed is a great use of space and opens up the floor space. A rear L-shaped kitchen is also a nice feature for a smaller camper. The front bunks allow for a full bath in the rear.

Outside a griddle makes outdoor cooking an option and an LP gas quick connect is there if you want to connect a full-size grill.

4. KZ RV Connect Mini

KZ RV Connect Mini Exterior

✅ Full, compact, exterior, slide-out kitchen

⛔ Could have used a fold-out table to increase the counter space

  • UVW: 3,850 lbs
  • Length: 22′ 1″
  • GVWR: 4,800 lbs
  • CCC: 950 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

The word “mini” is kind of a misnomer here. Sure, the word Mini is firmly stamped below the large front window, but the interior space defies the defining terminology.

The KZ Connect Mini offers a small slide-out for the Jack-knife sofa. However, it’s the perfect choice, shifting the living space’s primary, central furniture out of the center and really opening things up.

This makes enough room for everything else that RVers expect in a standard RV, including a full bathroom in the back. It’s not often that you have a sink in the bathroom on models in this class, but there is one here, along with a ton of storage space, pantries, wardrobes, and even a full bathtub.

5. Airstream Caravel 19CB

Airstream Caravel 19CB Exterior

✅ Airstream does a magnificent job of compacting so much into a tiny space, leaving room to breathe

⛔ All-electric fridge is a huge drain on the solar charging capabilities

  • UVW: 3,350 lbs
  • Length: 16′ 5″
  • GVWR: 4,300 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 500 lbs

The Airstream Cavarel is one of a handful of smaller Airstreams that have become popular with the brand. Airstream makes this four-sleeper work by compacting everything in a circular design, with one appliance running directly into the next.

This allows for two sizeable beds, a shower, a commode, a full kitchen, and even a tabletop (if not quite a full-fledged dinette arrangement).

Other than that, the iconic Airstream is on full display here, albeit small. They come with their own, unique look, both inside and out. It’s not for everyone, but if you like the Airstream aesthetic, the Caravel is an excellent option.

6. Coachmen Clipper 18BH

Coachmen Clipper 18BH Exterior

✅ A ton of space, including a full dry bath, even with the addition of the bunk beds

⛔ Lacking in the CCC department for an RV that hosts up to 6

  • UVW: 3,420 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 4″
  • GVWR: 4,125 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 400 lbs

The Coachmen Clipper is a funny-looking thing, but the bunkbed version has a more traditional aesthetic, with abundant space. There’s a ton of storage available, though you’ll need to pack your lightweight gear, especially if you’re bringing the kiddos and pets along for the ride.

A camper of this size, capable of packing in 6, is the ultimate in affordable travel trailers under 4000 lbs. It is also a durable lightweight trailer, with a BAL NXG frame with a Dexter E-Z Lube axle, HUCK bolt assembly, and an AlphaPly TPO roof. The 7 cu. ft fridge is a nice touch in a small space as well.

7. Bigfoot 2500 B17

Bigfoot 2500 B17 Exterior

✅ Fiberglass exterior with a retro look compliments a cedar interior

⛔ Most of the storage compartments lack shelves, for some reason

  • UVW: 3,360 lbs
  • Length: 17′ 5″
  • CCC: 940 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 315 lbs

The Bigfoo t takes what works with the Casita, Oliver, Scamp, Happier, and Escapes, meshing it with a more traditional, old-school look.

The body is fiberglass and, instead of going with one of the many synthetic wood variations often seen in affordable RVs, Bigfoot chose cedar. It makes for an outstanding, rich aesthetic that also has a wonderful, natural scent.

This also drives away bugs (they hate cedar), so the look has some side benefits as well. Compared to other travel trailers under 4000 lbs, the Bigfoot is built like a beast, with high durability.

Everything has a place and every place has something to love. It’s not the most spacious model on the list, but it can be more than a couples trailer with one pet or child.

8. Little Guy Max

Little Guy Max Exterior

✅ Comes with a very fine, custom-made master bed entertainment center

⛔ Despite its vibe, it’s not the ideal camper for boondocking

  • UVW: 3,140 lbs
  • Length: 21′
  • GVWR: 4,200 lbs
  • CCC: 1,060 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 310 lbs

The Little Guy Max is a teardrop on steroids and another one of those unique classes of travel trailers under 4000 lbs that has its own, seemingly built-in, but highly dedicated following. There’s good reason to join those followers as this is definitely the little camper that could.

Though it does have a wet bath, it’s spacious enough to not be uncomfortable. There are also a ton of storage options and plenty of carrying capacity for an RV that maxes out at three sleepers.

They also feature 100% hardwood cabinetry, which is always a nice touch and aesthetic. That three-year structural warranty is very nice as well!

9. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD

Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD Exterior - travel trailers under 4000 lbs

✅ A full tub/shower, and private dry bath on a sub-4000 is an example of fantastic room construction

⛔ Queen bed positioning requires some athletics for the inside sleeper to get out of bed

  • UVW: 3,760 lbs
  • Length: 21′ 11″
  • GVWR: 4,700 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 490 lbs

If you love boondocking and are heavy into tech stuff, you’ll love the Keystone Bullet Crossfire The15A MPPT SmartSolar controller, 200W solar panel, and inverter pre-wiring make off-grid camping a breeze.

You get all of that, plus the lightweight, easy-to-tow feature, at an affordable price. This RV definitely falls within that window. Despite a Queen bed and a sizeable dry bath is very spacious.

To expand on that vibe, the dinette sits next to a very large window, so you can enjoy the scenery as you eat breakfast and boondock somewhere well away from civilization.

10. Forest River Ozark 1620BHLE

Forest River Ozark 1620BHLE Exterior

✅ Twin bunks share a half-and-half with a dry bath on the back end of the RV

⛔ It could use a fold-up table for more counter space

  • UVW: 2,889 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 1″
  • GVWR: 3,850 lbs
  • CCC: 961 lbs

Most travel trailers under 4000 lbs have trouble packing in enough to support 6 sleepers. However, Forest River’s Ozark 1620BHLE accomplishes what only one other travel trailer on our list manages, and that’s bunks with a dry bath and enough room for 6 to sleep comfortably.

Even with all of that, there is still a comfortable amount of living space in the middle, though the fold-up table option should be standard on RVs that sacrifice counter space for more living space.

The comfortable interior layout provides ample storage solutions. Unfortunately, like the Coachmen Clipper 18BH, CCC becomes a liability when sleeping 6.

How Do You Decide What Size Travel Trailer You Need?

First and foremost, travel trailers under 4000 lbs typically lack variety, though versatility is always a plus. There’s only so much you can do at this weight class and even if it can sleep 6, there are notable sacrifices to achieve that. You should base your decision on several factors.

First, can you tow it? If you have a crossover or mid-size SUV, you need to carefully match the GVWR of your vehicle, with considerations toward carrying capacity added to the RV and the hitch weight.

Second, the size of your family and any pets. If extra space is your thing, and you have a large family, then it will be difficult to find what you want in the sub-4,000 category.

Third, the extent of use you plan on putting the RV through matters as well. For the most part, these RVs are for weekend getaways and short vacations. You can make them work long-term for couples or maybe three.

Understanding Travel Trailer Weight Terms

When you are looking through the plethora of travel trailers available to you, it can be overwhelming. Not only are there several options from many brands available to you, but it can also be difficult to know what to look for.

Additionally, you will come across numerous terms and abbreviations that you might not be familiar with. Here, we have compiled some of the most important terms for you to familiarize yourself with as you search for the best travel trailer for you.

UVW: Unloaded Vehicle Weight

UVW stands for unloaded vehicle weight and is one of the most significant things to remember. The unloaded vehicle weight refers to the weight of the trailer when it has nothing in it.

It’s a good idea to remember what this weight is because there are weight limits in certain areas. Knowing your unloaded vehicle weight allows you to calculate the weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded.

GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum operating weight of the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer. This weight includes the chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, accessories, passengers, and cargo.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC)

The Cargo Carrying Capacity, or CCC for short, is the maximum weight of everything you add to the travel trailer. This includes everything that you add to the trailer, including all your belongings. It is essentially the gross vehicle weight rating minus the unloaded vehicle weight.

Gross Combined Weight Rating

The Gross Combined Weight Rating is the maximum allowed loaded weight of the vehicle with towables such as a motor home towing a car.

Gross Axle Weight Rating

The final term that you may come across that you might be unfamiliar with is Gross Axle Weight Rating or GAWR for short. It is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle of a road vehicle.

Typically, the rating will be followed by either the letters FR or RR. These letters indicate whether it is a front or rear axle.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Camper?

Wholesale Warranties How Much Does an RV Warranty Cost? Travel trailers under 4000 lbs

Yes – but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

We bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

I appreciate the fact that several of your picks had a sofa or a Murphy bed which allows for a comfortable place to sit on a cold, windy or rainy day! For so many decades, too many small trailer floor-plans were nothing more than a bed and a dinette?

There is a wardrobe in the bedroom along with a nice electric fireplace and flat screen TV. Front bedroom models also have a nice window seat between storage compartments. Overhead cabinet storage along with room for a dresser is also available. This is an excellent layout for a top-rated travel trailer with a king bed inside.

The SportTrek Touring Edition luxury travel trailers also include residential-style features such as:

  • Antique White and Heirloom Maple finishes, rustic hardware, barnwood-style backsplash and flooring.
  • RV Airflow System optimizes the airflow in your A/C, increasing it by an average of 40%
  • iRV Smartphone app to control slides, awnings, lighting, check tank levels and more
  • Forced air heated & enclosed underbelly, enclosed gate valves, 360-degree residential fiberglass insulation, 360-degree radiant foil insulation, radiant foil-wrapped tanks & reflective PVC roof membrane w/lifetime warranty, Azdel Onboard composite panels.

In general, any of the travel trailers with king beds featured are this page will give you what you need. In terms of which one to choose that obviously is going to depend on your needs and your budget. As we always recommend; do your research before making a final purchase decision.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Orbital sander
  • Stain of your choice (I used espresso and red oak )
  • Torch (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Polyurethane clear finish
  • Dewalt Circular Saw
  • Dewalt Finish Nailer
  • Liquid Nails
  • Liquid nail gun

Step-by-Step Guide:

1.  Remove the Old Trim: Using a pry bar carefully remove the existing trim from the RV slide-out. Take your time to avoid damaging the surrounding walls or structures. If there are any screws or nails holding the trim in place, make sure to remove them as well. In my situation I only removed the edges of the trim.

2. Choose Your Trim Material: Decide whether you want to replace the trim with the same type of material or if you’d like to upgrade to a different style. Options include wood, composite materials, or even decorative molding for an elegant touch. I used pine because it not too heavy but still looks great, plus we had some on hand that we get from a local resource for cents .

3. Measure and Cut: Measure the dimensions of the slide-out area where the new trim will be installed. Carefully cut the new trim pieces to fit using a circular saw. If the trim is really long, you might have to put two boards.

4. Sand and Finish: Before attaching the new trim, sand the edges and surfaces of the cut pieces to ensure a smooth finish. If you plan stain the trim, this step is crucial for achieving a professional look. I wanted to imitate a burnt wood look so I stained it with espresso stain. Once it dried I sanded one more time. You can now clear it or I decided to add red oak on the white sanded areas on the board. I love how it turned out with the espresso and red oak stain.

5. Attach the New Trim:  Place some liquid nails on the trim board and using a finish nailer, attach the new trim to the slide-out area. Make sure the trim is level and secure. If you’re working with multiple pieces, ensure they align properly for a seamless appearance.

6. Clear the New Trim:  Using the polyurethane clear coat (you can choose semi gloss for more of a gloss or satin for a medium to low gloss) apply 2-3 coats on the new trim.

Conclusion:

Renovating the trim of your RV slide-out can breathe new life into your living space and provide a sense of accomplishment. With careful planning, precise measurements, and attention to detail, you can achieve a stunning transformation that will make your RV feel like a comfortable and stylish home away from home.
