Is The Trek 7000 A Good Mountain Bike? [REVIEW]

The Trek 7000 mountain bike, which was introduced in 1991, is not a particularly modern mountain bike.

It is, however, one of the better entry-level mountain bikes available. The medium price tag, combined with the ability to climb and descend some easy hills, has made it a favorite among mountain bikers.

Hello and welcome to the Best Bike Select blog. This post discusses the main features of the Trek 7000 mountain bike, what we like and dislike about it, as well as a comparison with some of the bikes currently available, which we hope will assist you in selecting the right mountain bike.

Features of Trek 7000 mountain bike

Aluminum frame (4.5/5).

The frame of the 1991 Trek 7000 is made of Easton 7129 E9 tapered aluminum tubing. Alpha ZX aluminum was used in the latest version of Trek 7000 in 2000.

The frame’s quality has greatly improved. Because the aluminum frame will become weak and even break after more than 5 years of use.

And the Alpha ZX aluminum frame patches on the solution to this problem, extending its life beyond ten years and allowing it to stay with you for longer if it is not a regular rough ride.

The steeper 71° head tube angle is ideal for climbing and, on steeper trails, not only brings out but improves on the benefits of a hardtail mountain bike. However, some skill is required on steep downhill trails. However, all of these are relegated to technical riding.

The Trek 7000 should be considered for its intended use, which is to ride on smaller hills with greater ease. And the frame weight is extremely light at 25.16 pounds, which is comparable to some of the current light trail mountain bikes.

Front Fork (4.2/5)

Aluminum and magnesium forks are more common in low and mid-range mountain bikes these days, which is why they are lighter. With a travel of 80mm (3.15″), this is still a good entry-level mountain bike.

The stock fork also includes a retractable dust cover to keep it clean. This is something that is difficult to notice on new mountain bikes. Perhaps the more active magnesium metal used in the fork makes it more corrosive.

The fork-linked front wheel lacks a quick release, and the barrel-axle front wheel lacks ease of installation, but I really like it. It has the potential to improve the ride’s stability. Perhaps this is why I prefer older mountain bikes as well.

Drivetrain (4.1/5)

The Trek 7000 from 1991 has a 3X7 drivetrain. The 2000 Trek 7000, on the other hand, has been upgraded to 3X9. More gears equals a greater range of shifting. It’s not just for mountain biking.

The smallest rear gear is an 11-tooth pinion, and the flywheel’s 22-tooth gears work in tandem, making it ideal for steep hills, and the ride is fast thanks to a 2x transmission ratio.

Alloy cable pull brake (3.5/5)

I’m not a fan of this type of brake, but I understand that it’s a 20-year-old design. After puddle riding, the Trek 7000’s brakes increase the braking distance. Large downhill brakes necessitate more braking force.

The power provided by your hands determines the effectiveness of your braking. It’s not very convenient, but the construction is low-cost and the braking effect is adequate.

It is still recommended that you upgrade to disc brakes, which does not come cheap, but the improved riding experience is well worth it.

Tires (4.5/5)

The width of the front and rear tires on the Trek 7000 differs slightly, front: 26 x 2.10″ Bontrager Jones AC, rear: 26 x 2.00″ Bontrager Jones AC, because the front tires provide enough grip during descents with the brakes.

Furthermore, the rear tire must provide adequate grip during normal riding or climbing. As a result, it’s an unusual but effective combination.

Commuters will appreciate the versatility of the 26″ tires, which are ideal for crowded streets or small, constantly changing terrain.

ICON Onyx handlebars (4.5/5)

Despite the fact that Trek is primarily using Bontrager alloy handlebars, the quality of the Trek 7000 handlebars is not bad.

Ergonomic design and a comfortable grip. It also employs different handlebar lengths and frame sizes to accommodate the differences between men and women.

Saddle (4.3/5)

The Trek 7000 was first used with the Trek System 2 saddle. The Bontrager FS 2000 was also used in the Trek 7000 in the year 2000. In some forums and reviews, neither saddle has received many complaints. The Bontrager FS 2000 saddle is more durable.

Trek x-caliber 8 mountain bike vs trek 7000.

The new Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike outperforms the Trek 7000 in so many ways that it’s not just a good mountain bike, but also a more advanced commuter bike.

Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, 100mm travel RockShox Judy SL Fork, 29×2.35″ (XS, S, 27.5×2.35″), 1X12 speed drivetrain, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc are included. All of these improvements add up to a selling price of around $1500.

The X-Caliber 8 is ideal for long rides because it was designed specifically for off-road use. It is all about losing weight. Despite weighing 3 pounds more than the Trek 7000, However, the design of the front fork compensates for this.

The Judy SL 100mm shock fork from RockShox features a TurnKey locking mechanism and a lighter, more adjustable air spring rather than a coil spring.

If you believe these accessories cannot be upgraded, please let us know. No, it isn’t flawless. The tires can be upgraded to a whopping 2.8″ wide for even more grip, propelling the bike forward with each pedal stroke like a throttle click.

The original fork has a travel of 100mm. It is upgradeable to a maximum of 120mm. This makes intense riding a lot more enjoyable. The Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike is a great mountain bike to try out if you like to ride long distances.

Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike vs Trek 7000

The Trek Marlin 7 is very stylish, and I really like the Marigold to Radioactive Red Fade. Besides the great paint color, the Trek Marlin 7 also has a clean, crisp internal alignment.

The relaxed head tube angle and comfortable ride are also the main features of the Trek Marlin 7. The same aluminum frame as the Trek 7000 is used. But the body weight is going to be about 4 lbs. in the middle. Not a very excessive weight change.

According to the official website, the Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike is a model that can compete with their high-end race bikes. Taking a closer look at its configuration, the 1X10 drivetrain, which is not very broad but crosses the line into a race model, can be interpreted as a popular version of the 3X10 Trek 7000.

The mid-range configuration of the RockShox Judy, the entry-level model for trail riding, is also consistent with the width of the Trek 7000’s tires in the 2.2-inch model.

However, the brakes are a good buy, with hydraulic disc brakes comparable to Trek’s sub-$3,000 mountain bikes. The Trek Marlin 7 is an excellent replacement for the Trek 7000, and if you like the Trek 7000, the Trek Marlin 7 will be its heir.

SANTA CRUZ Bronson Carbon R Mountain Bike vs Trek 7000

The SANTA CRUZ Bronson is a high-end race mountain bike, but there is a difference between the front and rear tires of the Trek 7000: [front] 29 x 2.5 inches, [rear] 27.5 x 2.4 inches.

Long lost 1996 Trek 7000 ZX

Do you or anyone you know have a 21" 1996 Trek 7000 ZX? They had a distinctive purple powder coat paint job. It was the best looking bike I'd ever seen when I saw it in the bike store that day 17 years ago. Mine eventually had a cable bracket on top of the top tube get a little lose. I took it in to get it repaired and when I came back they replaced the whole frame. I'm sure they thought I'd be happy but I was heartbroken. And the old frame was long gone. I have a 19.5 but my buddy has a 21. I will reach out to him to see if he wants to sell it. It was my first mtb and I have it setup as a single speed winter commuter right now. They did a matte and glossy? Which finish do you prefer? Are you looking for the frame and all the OEM parts? How do you plan to ride this bike?

When a guy repainted my bike before he said he couldn't do the purple powder coat and it would be hard for most to do it. I don't know if this true or not. But, I love the decals, too. I don't know if it would be even possible to get those.  

That would be great! Matte definitely. Just like the one below that Borbntm posted. I'd like a complete bike but yeah the frame is what I'm really interested in. Having the original front fork would be great, too. I'd ride it on crushed rock trails and a little on the street. Thanks for any help!

Sorry for my embarrassing faux pas. I thought this would only be seen by the little "Trek 7000 ZX Club" I found 5 years ago. I'm sure that was the only time previously I've ever been part of a forum and am pretty clueless about their reach. Well until 2023, good riding everyone.

I usually do not post like this, but this bike was an exception. I bought my 8700 in 92, and put a lot of hard miles on it till 1996. I weighed 170 - 180lbs, and rode rough WV trails. I even rode it in the 24hr of Canaan race. Great bike, lots of good memories, It has been laying as a scrap frame in my out building for some time now, I am thinking of converting it to a beater single speed. Could not bear to just trash it.

It was a great bike, very light and responsive, however the stock DDS2 air/oil shock was always an issue. Hard to adjust, and you had to leave brakes loose due to the sway. Was not the best at holding a line on a rutted trail. (I did not know exactly how bad until I replaced it with a Cannondale). For my larger size, it had a little too much flex.

Rough and tough, light frame. It took abuse, and is still in one piece today. No glue joint issues, just scratches.

Its is a beast.

light, responsive

no suspension

the only mtn. bike i've ever had. bought it in 1993 off a racer who was upgrading. The shock that came with it weighed 2X the weight of the frame (1st gen air/oil shock), so I ditched it and put on a Kinesis aluminium fork. Ridden it in MN, CA, NY and now OH. Eventually I'll get around to putting a modern suspension fork on it, but I'm having too much fun

I bought the frame for 40 bucks, just because it was so 1st-Generation-Carbon funky and I had all the other parts laying around. What a cool bike it turned out to be! I built it with lots of light parts and it's light, fast, and fun. I had one problem initially, 1st generation carbon variety. The aluminum cable stops are riveted to the carbon top tube with a single rivet. Over time they worked themselves loose and pivoted a few mm in each direction, which is not real good for shifting and braking. I solved the problem with golf shaft epoxy, which is specifically designed for metal-to-carbon applications. Worked great. Bike looks like hell, all scuffed and scratched, but I'm not going to paint it. If you find one, buy it cheap and have fun.

Lightweight, very responsive

LX shifters, Judy shock, and the stock wheels didn't last long. After the first ride, I had to replace my rear wheel, and within 2 months, I had to replace my shifters. Once I upgraded to XT, all has been good.

I have had this bike since 1998, and it has been great. It is super light, and I have been hesitant to go to a full suspension. I have put thousands of miles on it,and it still rides strong. Now that my shock leaks pretty bad, it is time to either buy a new fork, or just suck it up and upgrade to a full suspension. I will keep this bike for a road/around town bike.

Eventually this thing is going to die with me on it. I weigh roughly 250 dressed out, these carbon tubes can't last forever.

I'm going to send this frame to TREK when I'm done with it, they can use it as a marketing campaign. I purchased the frame barely used in 2000 just to build a bike spec'd out like I wanted without paying too much. I originally built it with titanium rims, and carbon bars, this thing was superlight and fast. Someone fell into me passing on a trail and taco'd my rear wheel and in the ensuing fall I killed a Profile Carbon flatbar. So out came the Mavics. I have literally rode thousands of miles on this bike. Frame has held up extremely well under my Clydesdale weight of 250 pounds. Granted I steer clear from the freeride section at the local trails and I don't get much air on jumps, I do punish it on log hops, small jumps and few crashes over the years. There are no signs of cracks or separation from the carbon and aluminum joints. I have been wanting to replace the frame with something more up to date, but this thing is so lightweight it's silly. It is the mose responsive hardtail frame I have ridden. My local Trek dealer can't believe how it's held up under my weight and the fast singletrack punishment it has seen over the years. So as a true testament to Trek's quality and design, I've decided to ride her till she can't take it anymore. Let's see how long she'll last.

I spent about a year's allowance on this bike when I was in highschool (1995). I consider it the best purchase I have ever made. I usually ride it at least once a week - it has been on a lot of crazy rides including 50 miles of pannier-loaded camping and a few muddy races. I still love the bike. I have upgraded it a bit, but I haven't had to replace any of the original drivetrain (LX/XT). This frame has really crisp handling and it's an easy climber. Its flexier than the harsh aluminum frames my friends are all riding these days - which is a great thing in my opinion. I weigh 155 pounds, and I love the way this bike dampens bumps and how it smoothly handles shooting down a gully and flying up the other side. I love this kind of smooth ride - if this frame hadn't been around, I'd have had to get a heavier steel bike or saved even more allowance for titanium. Trek shouldn't have stopped making this bike - it is one awesome hardtail and it nicely fills the niche for people who like a smooth ride but don't want the weight/rust of steel or the cost of Ti. If you come across a deal on a used 8700, the carbon's not too scratched up, you aren't a heavy person, and you like a smooth-riding frame, BUY IT.
