21 Best Things to Do in Jackson Hole — Including National Parks, Hot Springs, and Cowboy Bars

The Wyoming mountain town has a real Old West feel.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

trips to jackson hole wyoming

There are plenty of beautiful mountain towns in the West, but Jackson Hole has long stood out. The Wyoming town sits in a mountain valley surrounded by jutting peaks and open wildlands. It's home to animals like moose, elk, and bears, in addition to real-life cowboys and cowgirls who frequent many of the stops on this list.

In Jackson, you can start the day deep in the wilderness, surrounded by nature, and end it at a cowboy-themed bar filled with locals and live music. This blend of nature and culture is part of what makes Jackson Hole such a special place.

Here are 21 of the best things to do in Jackson Hole.

Snow King Mountain Resort

Snow King Mountain Resort isn't Jackson's biggest, but it's the most accessible. The summer playground and winter ski hill is right in town, providing easy access to the mountain sports locals love. During the summer, you can bike, ride the gondola, or zip down the mountain in a coaster, while in the winter, the slopes are reserved for skiers and snowboarders who come to take in the views before making their descent.

Grand Teton National Park

Irjaliina Paavonera/Travel + Leisure

Part of what makes Jackson Hole so special is its direct access to some of the nation's best national parks . Grand Teton National Park , home to the magnificent Teton Range, sits just north of the city. Within the park, you'll find beautiful alpine lakes, hundreds of miles of trails, and plentiful wildlife, including bears, moose, and elk.

Astoria Hot Springs

Situated on the bank of the Snake River just 20 minutes south of Jackson is a source of natural thermal water that's funneled into a series of natural hot spring pools. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters of Astoria Hot Springs is a Jackson Hole must — especially since entry fees support the Astoria Park Conservancy, which protects the area's natural resources and provides community programming.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

In the winter, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort draws some of the world's best skiers and boarders. But in reality, the "extreme" mountain, which is home to the iconic Corbet's Couloir, has a little something for everyone — even total beginners. In the summer , ski runs transform into hiking and biking trails, and long days leave plenty of time for alfresco dining and enjoying the mountain's ropes course.

Persephone Bakery

It's almost impossible to express the deliciousness that awaits at Persephone . Jackson Hole's most beloved bakery, which now has three locations, is a must if you enjoy French-inspired food — from wonderfully light croissants to hearty quiches. We suggest swinging by their cafe near the Town Square and eating your way through the menu.

Town Square

It may be cliché, but did you really experience Jackson if you didn't walk through the Town Square and get your photo taken under the iconic antler arches? Fun fact: The eye-catching arches were made by hand using an estimated 2,000 elk antlers shed on the nearby National Elk Refuge.

Darwin Ranch

If Jackson Hole is a bit too much for you, make your way east to the remote Darwin Ranch . This spot is known for its quiet, wild setting (it butts up against the Gros Ventre Wilderness), as well as its exceptional food and dude ranch experiences . At Darwin, you can spend the day fishing in Snake River, riding horses, and sitting by an open fire, cocktail in hand.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

In the summer, no trip to Jackson is complete without a night under the stars at the Jackson Hole Rodeo . Every year, the outdoor arena welcomes ropers and bronco riders who come to put on a show for a stadium full of fans. Not into rodeo? Come for the food (and beer).

Bar T 5 Wagon Cookout

For a true — and literal — taste of the Old West, head to the Double H Bar. Their renowned Bar T 5 cookout includes a ride in a horse-drawn covered wagon and a three-hour dinner and show in the stunning Cache Creek Canyon outside town.

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

Set right off the Town Square, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar sits under a neon cowboy on a bucking bronco. Inside, the Wild West theme continues with saddle-topped bar seats and rustic cowboy decor. It's the best place in Jackson to, quite literally, saddle up to the bar and enjoy live music.

Stagecoach Bar

Just a few miles west of Jackson Hole at the base of Teton Pass lies a bar that has been a local favorite since 1942. The historic Stagecoach Bar — known simply as "the Coach" by locals — is the place to go for a drink, affordable eats, and the chance to rub elbows with loyal local clientele.

Jackson Hole Winery

As you might imagine, making a good bottle of wine at 6,000-plus feet can be challenging. But after years of experimenting, the folks at Jackson Hole Winery have it nailed. In addition to serving up glass after glass of their pinot noir and viognier, the winery sits at the base of the Teton Range, providing some of the best views you'll ever get from a winery.

One of the most popular destinations within Grand Teton National Park is Jenny Lake — and for good reason. The beautiful lake is often thought of as the park's centerpiece. It's easily accessible, and from the eastern shore, you'll get stunning views of Teewinot Mountain and Mount Saint John.

Yellowstone National Park

The nation's first national park is also one of the most popular — and it just so happens to sit directly north of Jackson Hole. Yellowstone National Park , which turned 150 in 2022, is known for its plentiful geysers (including Old Faithful) and wildlife, including grizzly bears.

National Elk Refuge

Arguably the best place in the world to watch elk is National Elk Refuge , which is adjacent to the city of Jackson Hole. The refuge's resident elk herd roams the almost 25,000 acres of grasslands, forest, and wetlands that have been protected for them. In addition to viewing the animals from lookout points along the road, you can take a tour onto the refuge for an up-close look.

Snake River Brewing

Every good mountain town has a team of brewers crafting locally inspired beer. And the offerings in Jackson don't disappoint, particularly the brews coming out of Snake River Brewing , which has been in operation since 1994. This little haven sits right off the Town Square and serves up a handful of award-winning beers complemented by refined comfort food.

Jackson Hole Playhouse

When you step into the Jackson Hole Playhouse , you enter a completely different world. The rustic performing arts theater offers a stellar dinner and a show, both with an Old West feel. It's a must, especially if it's your first time in Jackson Hole.

Whitewater Rafting

Just west of town, Snake River winds its way along the base of the Tetons. One of the best ways to see the valley — and get a close look at wildlife like moose, elk, and eagles — is by booking a rafting trip with one of the city's many vendors .

National Museum of Wildlife Art

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is the only museum in the country that's dedicated solely to wildlife art — and it's fitting that it's found just outside Jackson, near the famed National Elk Refuge. At the museum, you'll see works by artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Andy Warhol alongside local pieces.

Aerial Tram

There's nothing quite like the magic of hopping in a gondola car and being swept up a mountain in a mere 12 minutes. Along the way, you'll climb more than 4,000 vertical feet and enjoy staggering views of the Tetons and Jackson Hole valley. Even better, you'll be greeted at the top by warm, gourmet waffles — with everything from Nutella to peanut butter and bacon — from the team at Corbet's Cabin .

Dog Sledding

One of the most unique things you can do in Jackson Hole in the winter is go dog sledding . There's nothing quite like being pulled by a team of highly trained dogs through some of Wyoming's most stunning landscapes. To up the ante, you can even book a tour that ends with a soak at a natural hot spring.

12 Best Things To Do in Jackson Hole

Updated May. 22, 2023

Thanks to its prime location near  Yellowstone  and  Grand Teton  national parks, Jackson Hole beckons to outdoors enthusiasts. Opportunities to hike abound here, while winter travelers can hit the slopes at  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort  or  Grand Targhee

  • All Things To Do

trips to jackson hole wyoming

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Occupying a large chunk of Teton Village in the northwest corner of the valley, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a vacation destination unto itself. The primary resort area in the valley, this property boasts several hotels and timeshares and an adventure park, not to mention a variety of dining options on top and below the mountain. However, the main reason people visit the resort is to take advantage of the skiing; located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain, the resort offers prime access to 2,500 acres of ski runs and 4,139 feet of vertical drop. And with more than 400 inches of snowfall annually, it's no wonder why the area is considered to be one of the best ski resorts in the country.

Skiing isn't the only activity here. During the summertime, the resort offers visitors numerous opportunities to hike and mountain bike as well as paraglide. Recent visitors also said that a ride on the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is a must, no matter the season. The 12-minute tram ride runs to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, allowing for breathtaking views of the Teton Mountains. If heights aren't your thing, don't fret. Travelers said there are so many activities to do there you'll likely never be bored. Some suggested arriving at the village as early as possible, as you'll probably end up staying until closing time.

Grand Teton National Park Grand Teton National Park

Boasting a whopping 310,000 acres of jagged, snow-capped peaks, verdant forests and crystal-clear alpine lakes,  Grand Teton National Park  is the highlight of any trip to Jackson Hole. It was amidst these stunning mountains that nomadic Paleo-Indians spent their summers almost 11,000 years ago and that America's 19th-century fur-trading industry thrived. Now, Grand Teton National Park plays the role of wild wonderland, offering visitors a taste of the mighty wilderness that pioneers encountered a couple of centuries ago.

There are numerous reasons to visit Grand Teton. To get a feel for the park, take a drive along the U.S. Route 89 (the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway) which traces the eastern side of the stunning Jackson Lake and continues north to the entrance of  Yellowstone National Park . However, don't spend all your time behind the wheel. Opportunities to hike, mountain climb, cross-country ski and fish are abundant. And keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of Grand Teton's full-time residents, which include moose, elk and bison. Bears and coyotes also call the park home, so take extra precautions when heading out on a hike or setting up camp.

National Elk Refuge National Elk Refuge free

Every autumn, Jackson Hole resonates from the distinctive mating calls of one of its most prominent residents: elk. These large, deer-like creatures have roamed Jackson Hole and the nearby Teton Mountains by the thousands for many years, but they still have difficulty finding food during the harsh winter months. So as temperatures begin to drop, the Hole's herds make their way to the National Elk Refuge, a massive non-enclosed sanctuary. Visit the refuge in winter to find them waiting for spring thaw, munching on staff-provided alfalfa pellets.

While at the refuge, you can observe the animals from your car, or you can tag along on a guided sleigh ride (during the winter months). If you want to spot the most elk, plan your visit for the winter months. Travelers who visited the refuge during the warmer months reported seeing little to no elk. But those who did make the trek here during prime elk-viewing season were surprised by the amount of activity at the refuge and pleased by how close they were able to get to the animals. Many also strongly recommended scheduling the guided sleigh ride tour to get a unique look at the elk in their habitats and highly praise the guides for their expertise. If you sign up for this, make sure to wear plenty of warm layers.

Jackson Hole Playhouse Jackson Hole Playhouse

Just because the sun's gone down and the ski lifts have closed doesn't mean the fun has to stop. In the evenings, valley visitors head to the Jackson Hole Playhouse. This small dinner theater in downtown Jackson is housed in the oldest building in town, and is famous for its fun atmosphere and quality performances. The productions are so good, some past audience members have compared them to those on Broadway, despite the venue's diminutive size.

Guests are welcome to skip the dining portion of the evening and come only for the show, but many recent visitors urged future travelers to reconsider – cast members of the night's show not only serve the food, but serenade diners. Most also gave high marks for the food served, as well as the friendly hospitality.

trips to jackson hole wyoming

Granite Hot Springs Granite Hot Springs

Jackson Hole's many natural attractions may cater primarily to adventure junkies, but the Granite Hot Springs are reserved solely for those in need of some rest and relaxation. Open during the winter and summer, this thermal concrete pool offers bathers beautiful views of the surrounding Bridger-Teton National Forest. The water's average temps range from a steamy 93 degrees in summer to 112 degrees in winter. Visitors can also take advantage of the area's scenic hiking and snowshoeing paths, or try whitewater rafting through the nearby Hoback Junction.

Recent visitors claimed that the scenery alone is worth the trip, saying it is a must-do. Nestled among the Gros Ventre Mountains, the hot springs are 7,000 feet above sea level, so you can only imagine the views your eyes will be treated to. Because the springs are located on the side of a mountain, the road leading up to the springs is not in the best of conditions. Travelers reported the road to be unpaved and gravely, but stressed to future visitors that the attraction is worth the climb, and if drivers simply exercise caution when driving, they can navigate it successfully.

National Museum of Wildlife Art National Museum of Wildlife Art

Combining Jackson Hole's love for the arts with its age-old respect for local fauna, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is definitely worth a visit. Located less than 3 miles north of downtown Jackson – just off Route 89 – this small museum is home to more than 5,000 works of wildlife art from more than 550 artists. Some pieces even date back to 2500 B.C. While the museum features several European pieces as well as works from Africa and New Zealand, American works dominate the 14 galleries.

Recent guests were impressed by the quality of art displayed here and said you don't need to be an art specialist to appreciate and enjoy this museum. Travelers also enjoyed the panoramic views the property afforded of the  National Elk Refuge , with some visitors able to spot animals from the museum. Make sure to check out the outdoor art, particularly the nearly mile-long Sculpture Trail, which features sculptures of area elk traversing the terrain. Others were particularly impressed with the Children’s Discovery Gallery, which includes a puppet theater, animal costumes and a reading nook.

Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum

With a stop by the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, travelers can learn about the area's Wild West history. Through artifacts, historical narratives and photographs, visitors will glimpse exciting characters like animal trappers, dude ranchers and cowboys, as well as the Native Americans that first inhabited the region. The museum also offers various specialty programs and events for travelers, including walking tours of the town of Jackson and local author talks.

Despite its small size, recent visitors said that the attraction is chock full of interesting information, and definitely worth your time, especially for those interested in American history. Many reviewers said it's a great place to bring children for the attraction's animal exhibits and noted the knowledge and warmth of the staff helped make their experience at the museum a memorable one.

Snow King Mountain Snow King Mountain

If you're looking to add a dash of history to your downhill run, consider a visit to the Snow King Resort in Jackson. Founded in 1939, Snow King was Wyoming's first established ski area. Ever since, avid winter sports enthusiasts have flocked here for a taste of Jackson powder. The resort boasts more than 400 acres of skiable terrain – 110 acres of which can be used for night skiing – and 1,571 feet of vertical drop. Novice skiers take note: only 50 percent of Snow King runs cater to beginners and intermediates. For easier skiing terrain, consider visiting  Grand Targhee  instead. Also located within Snow King are several areas reserved for snowboarding and tubing, as well as an ice rink and lodgings that cater to moderate budgets.

Many recent travelers agreed that the property is a bit dated for a resort but appreciated the close proximity to the town of Jackson (less than a mile and accessible via the Start bus) in comparison to the other hot spots in the area. Visitors recommended taking a ride up the ski lift for amazing views of the mountain. And if you're here during the summer, don't leave without a ride on the alpine slide, especially if you've got kids in tow.

Grand Targhee Resort Grand Targhee Resort

For those of you who aren't quite ready for the black diamond slopes at the  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , the Grand Targhee Resort offers easier, more family-friendly runs. Located in Alta, Wyoming – a small town about 38 miles northwest of Jackson – this resort has claimed two of the Teton Mountains as its own. Here you'll find more than 2,500 acres of ski terrain that sees an average of 500 inches of snowfall each year. A sizeable portion of the resort caters to beginner and intermediate skiers, plus you can take ski lessons at Grand Targhee. However, recent visitors said that more advanced powder hounds will find several runs that cater to their skill level as well.

Recent travelers enjoyed their time at Grand Targhee Resort and noted that the resort's small size meant fewer crowds, which was a much appreciated reprieve from Jackson Hole's more congested slopes. Some travelers strongly encouraged a visit to the on-site naturalist, whose knowledge in the region's geography and botany enhanced their experience at the resort. Others, however, said if you're a skier who's looking for a challenge, try a different resort.

Jackson Hole Winery Jackson Hole Winery

This unique winery is located more than 6,000 feet above sea level at the base of the Teton Mountains, making it one of the highest wineries in the country. The grapes are grown in Sonoma, California , and then transported to Jackson Hole where the winemaking process begins. The winery's founder wanted to experiment with making wine at high altitude, where there is 18% less oxygen making for a slower fermentation process. Judging by the rave reviews from visitors, the results turned out great. Visitors also enjoyed the diverse selection of wines and said the on-site sommeliers were knowledgeable. The tasting room is located in a rustic barn setting, and there are picnic tables and chairs outside so visitors can take in views of the mountains after.

During the summer months, the winery is open every day except Tuesdays from 12 – 5 p.m. During the winter, it's open Thursday through Sunday from 12 – 4:30 p.m. Tastings are by appointment only, and guests can call ahead to reserve. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own snacks and utensils should they want to eat. Tastings cost $30 per person for groups up to seven people; those in groups with more than seven people will pay $40 per person.

Jackson Hole Horseback Riding Jackson Hole Horseback Riding

A guided trail ride is one of the best ways to experience the Cowboy State, and Jackson Hole has plenty of riding ranches for travelers to choose from. Teton Village Trail Rides offers one- and two-hour ride options that bring guests through the mountains and provide views of Snake River Ranch, Teton Mountain Resort and surrounding Jackson Hole. The company also offers a child-friendly horse adventure that allows kids to ride for 30 minutes while their parents lead the horse on a rope. Visitors say the rides are safe, and guides are knowledgeable. Ride options cost $65, $100 and $30, respectively.

Spring Creek Ranch is another popular option that also offers one- and two-hour rides. These guided journeys take riders along the East Gros Ventre Butte, providing picturesque views of the Tetons. Past riders were amazed by the scenery. One hour excursions cost about $60 while two-hour rides come in at $80. (Though reviewers generally loved their rides, they advised future travelers to skip staying at the ranch due to dated accommodations.)

trips to jackson hole wyoming

Cross Country Skiing Cross Country Skiing

Winter visitors who want to explore the snow without hitting the slopes should consider one of Jackson Hole's many cross country skiing options. Teton Pines Nordic Center offers almost 10 miles of groomed trails, and Shooting Star Nordic Track provides about 9 miles of trails with varied terrain. You can also opt to ski in nearby Grand Teton National Park – the most popular route is to Jenny Lake and back. There of plenty of equipment rental companies around downtown Jackson including Skinny Skis and Hoback Sports. Rentals usually cost between $25 and $45.

There are also plenty of guided cross country skiing options around which are a great choice if you’'e traveling with a large group or if it's your first time cross country skiing. On a tour, you'll learn the proper techniques for cross country skiing. Plus, guides can provide educational information about the natural surroundings and wildlife you encounter while you're skiing.  For a guided excursion, consider The Hole Hiking Experience or EcoTour Adventures. A half-day guided cross country ski trip usually costs around $145 per person. However, companies don't often include skis in their fees; you'll have to rent those on your own.

The easiest and most direct to getting to Jackson, Wyoming would be to fly into the Jackson Hole airport. You can rent a car from the airport or you can do an RV trip like we did!

Jackson, Wyoming is a small town located just outside the Grand Teton National Park and it is about 1.5 hours south of Yellowstone.

Interesting fact! People tend to call it Jackson Hole instead of just Jackson. The town is technically just Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is the greater valley of Teton County in Wyoming that includes the smaller ski towns Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, the Aspens, Moran Junction, and Moose.

Elk Arches in Jackson

The town, Jackson, is located at the southern end of Jackson Hole.

The population here is around 10,000 people! How cute is that! Such a small town. Jackson is a popular tourist destination for those who visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons and for those who enjoy skiing.

WHERE TO EAT

A Jackson Hole itinerary is not complete without giving you recommendations on where to eat. The town of Jackson has tons of cute shops and restaurants to eat at. The recommendations below are based on where we eat during our time in Jackson, Wyoming.

We had coffee twice from Jackson Hole Roasters Coffee House . The first time was because we wanted to grab coffee to go and we actually spent a 2nd day in Jackson just working from our computers. We stopped by Cowboy Coffee to work, but they didn’t have any seating due to COVID, so we went back to our first place.

Originally, we began to wait in line to eat at The Bunnery Bakery and Restaurant . It opened at 8am and there was already a huge line. We were starving so we opted to head somewhere else even though this place looked delicious and cute!

We headed to Cafe Genevieve for breakfast. It was in a cute little old house and there was no line! It was still delicious, has 4 stars on Yelp and to be honest you really can’t go wrong with breakfast.

As we were working from Jackson Hole Roasters we noticed people eating breakfast there too and it looked delicious as well.

Who doesn’t love a healthy lunch? Make sure to check out the Healthy Being Cafe and Juicery for delicious salads and juices.

Lunch in Jackson, Wyoming

I recommend visiting Hand Fire Pizza . Who doesn’t love a delicious pizza after a long day? Hand Fire Pizza is located in an old movie theatre. It has the cutest vibe and you get to watch them make your pizza in a huge pizza oven.

ACTIVITIES AROUND JACKSON, WYOMING

Depending on what season you visit Jackson will help determine what kind of activities you can do. This Jackson Hole Itinerary is focused on activities that you can do in and around Jackson during the Fall Season.

Considering you are so close to two National Parks, I would highly recommend you do some hiking. The options are truly endless when it comes to hiking trails. If you are looking for a moderate hike that is about 4.5 miles long then check out the Phelps Lake trail.

There are two options to get to Phelps Lake. You can follow the All Trails route by starting at the Death Canyon Trailhead or you can follow this guide and start at the Rockefeller Preserve.

Jackson Hole itinerary

Looking for an extra fun adventure!? Make sure to jump off the giant rock at Phelps Lake!

Insider’s Tip! Do note that RVs longer than 23 feet are not allowed up the road to Phelps Lake. We had an RV that was 23 feet exactly and they would not allow us up this road. We ended up parking at the bottom of the road and hitchhiking our way up.

They would not allow us to walk up the road either due to lots of Bear and Moose activity.

RENT A BIKE

This is a great way to see the entire area of Jackson Hole. Start your adventure in the town of Jackson and rent an E-bike from E-bikes of Jackson Hole .

Make sure to grab a bike route map from them before you head out. There are tons of biking route options. We chose to do the Grand Loop trail which is about 18 miles long (this is easy on an e-bike). We started in Jackson, went to Teton Village and got lunch and then biked back to Jackson.

Complete guide to Jackson Hole

If you plan to do this route, plan for about 3.5 hours. It was a gorgeous ride, especially in the Fall.

It is $40 per bike for the first 2 hours and then each additional hour is $10.

GO TO A WINERY

Visit the Jackson Hole Winery for some delicious wine and beautiful views. This winery is located just outside the main square. It is a little too far to walk here from the square, so plan to drive.

trips to jackson hole wyoming

This was a last minute decision for us and we were lucky enough to snag a spot here, but if you plan to go here then I highly recommend making a reservation !

The town of Jackson is so cute! It has an old-town, western vibe. There are tons of options for shopping. You can plan to grab any souvenir items you may want here or just check out some of the amazing art galleries.

Things to do in Jackson

Make sure to walk through the main town square under their famous real Elk antler arches.

If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, they have farmer’s markets in the mornings during the Summer and the beginning of Fall.

WATCH A MOVIE

This one is a little insiders tip for you! Head to the Teton Gravity Research shop and walk to the back of the store. There is a small little movie theatre where they play some epic adventure videos.

The Teton Gravity Research is a film company that creates films about epic adventure sports. Watching these videos are pretty incredible and inspiring.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR OUTDOOR LOVING GIRL

Jackson is probably one of the cutest towns I have ever visited and I highly recommend you plan to visit it! Even if you just have time to visit the main town square! Do you have a favorite small town? I would love to know in the comments!

With nonstop flights from 13 major cities, Jackson Hole Airport is located 9 miles from the town square and 20 miles from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, making it one of the most accessible airports in the Rockies. The only commercial airport within national park boundaries, Jackson Hole Airport offers direct flights from 13 major cities through Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines.

Questions about flying into JAC

How early should i get to jackson hole airport before my flight.

While Jackson Hole Airport is small and easy to navigate, it gets crowded at peak times. We recommend that you arrive at the airport 2 hours prior to your flight to ensure stress-free travel and enjoy the newly renovated fireplaces, oversized chairs, free Wi-Fi, local dining, and floor-to-ceiling windows that just might take your breath away. Ask your lodging accommodations if they provide an airport shuttle. If not, pre-schedule a taxi to take you from your hotel to the airport upon your departure.

Which rental car options are located at the airport?

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and National are all located in the airport terminal.

Are there off-site rental car companies in Jackson? How do I get there?

Dollar, Hertz, and Thrifty are all located 9 miles from the airport in the town of Jackson, and travel from the airport is provided by a complimentary shuttle. Find the shuttle outside the north end of the center island below a brown sign reading “Rental Car Shuttles.”

Are there hotel accommodations at the airport?

No. The closest overnight accommodations are located in the town of Jackson.

Are there other airports I can fly into?

Experience the best of both worlds by flying into one of our neighboring airports and take a miniature road trip to Jackson. Both Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah, are popular flight destinations for travel to Jackson Hole and just a scenic drive away.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is a 4-hour, 30-minute drive from Jackson Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA) is a 1-hour, 45-minute drive from Jackson

Driving Here

Driving to Jackson is a breathtaking experience that offers a mix of adventure and beauty as you explore some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. Discover the hidden gems of remote Wyoming, and stop at attractions and monuments along the way.

Regional Airports

For broader options in flight availability and price, flying into Idaho Falls (IDA) or Sale Lake City (SLC) are popular travel options for Jackson Hole visitors and locals alike.

trips to jackson hole wyoming

Public transportation, including a robust bus system, can get you to many destinations in the area. A well-maintained bike path is open for biking all year round. If you’re going carless, hiring a guide and taking guided tours are great ways to ensure you can get everywhere you want to go.

There's plenty to explore any season in Jackson Hole.

A snow-filled landscape offers both wild and cozy experiences for everyone. Along with world-class skiing and snowboarding, you can discover snowmobiling, sleigh rides, hot springs, fireside moments, and so much more.

As the snow melts and the Tetons defrost, the Jackson Hole valley comes alive with signs of life: rivers swell with snow runoff, fields and trees burst into green, and wildlife comes out of hibernation with their young.

Find your perfect adventure hiking, biking, climbing, and fishing or sit back and take in wild mountain, river, and wildlife views. No matter how you choose to spend your summer days in the Tetons, you’ll be connecting to the wild like you never have before.

As the leaves change and mountain peaks get dusted with snow, scenic drives, bike rides, and hikes can offer the area’s most beautiful views of the year. Jackson and the national parks slow down a bit as summer winds down and wildlife begin preparation for winter.

Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

How to get to jackson hole, flying to jackson hole.

In true Jackson Hole fashion, even the local airport  is worth seeing.  Situated 10 miles north of the town of Jackson in the heart of Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole’s airport (JAC) is a beautiful timber and stone structure featuring huge, sun-filled windows that frame a spectacular westward view of the Tetons. Complete with a waiting area that includes deep-seated leather chairs with ottomans, fake fireplaces and good, free Wi-Fi, it's no wonder a traveler from Nevada recently wrote to the New York Times to say "It's about the only airport where you get 'angry' when they announce your flight is leaving instead of when they announce it isn't!"

Check out the airport’s website for flight information and travel conditions, then get to know your way around with this map of the terminal and an expanded article about it.

Though it's a small airport, it still has the amenities you’d expect from a major hub. Numerous rental car, shuttle and taxi services as well as Uber and Lyft are available for transport to and from the tarmac. Starting December 16th, Jackson Hole’s START (Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit) bus will launch an airport shuttle pilot program that will run during the 2023/24 winter season through Sunday, April 14th. The shuttle will make four stops in town that are all within walking distance of many hotels. The one-way fares are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 9 to 12; free for kids ages 8 and under. Riders headed to Teton Village should transfer at the Miller Park shuttle stop on N Millward St, then walk across the street to the Miller Park bus stop on E Deloney Ave.

Within the boarding area is an American restaurant/bar called “Jedediah’s at the Airport,” free wireless internet and an ATM. Also in the waiting area is The Grand Teton Park Book Shop that sells souvenirs, books and magazines; 100% of the store's profits go to the National Park Service.

The airport is just under a 20-minute drive from Jackson Town Square.

Driving to Jackson Hole

Because of the natural geography of this whole "Hole" thing, there are actually only a few roads leading in to the Jackson Hole valley:

  • If you're driving from points south you're probably going to be arriving on either U.S. Routes 191 or 89. These two meet and become one north of Hoback Junction, carrying you just 20 more minutes directly to the town of Jackson. Route 191 comes from Pinedale, Wyoming, and Rock Springs, Wyoming which is about 3 hours away where 191 intersects Interstate 80. U.S. 89 comes north to Jackson from Salt Lake City and southern Utah.
  • If you're coming into our valley from points west, your options are to get on U.S. 89 down in Alpine, Wyoming and drive up 45 minutes to Jackson from there, or drive in over the famous Teton Pass Hwy 22 from Victor, Idaho.
  • Approaching Jackson Hole from the north is trickier because Yellowstone National Park borders us on that side, so to avoid coming through the (sometimes very) slow but obviously scenic two lane road through Yellowstone, you will probably be wanting to drive to Victor, Idaho and approach from the west on Teton Pass Hwy 22, or maybe U.S. 26 over Togwotee pass from Riverton, Wyoming.
  • Driving to Jackson Hole from the east  is the most straightforward. You can come in over Togwotee Pass on U.S. 26 from Riverton, and Casper, Wyoming.  The typical route to get here from further east is by taking Interstate 80 to Rock Springs, Wyoming and taking U.S. 191 north 3 hours to Jackson as described above "driving from points south."

Road Conditions

Summer driving around here is easy and these are all good roads (though note the nearly 3,000 foot elevation gain of climbing Teton Pass on Hwy 22).

Road quality during the snowy months is rarely an issue, but you will want to check the weather forecast to make sure you aren't approaching smack in the middle of a storm. Roads can close or become unsafe quickly during winter storms , especially Teton Pass.

Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has a great website to look up webcams and updated road conditions for each route.

Safe Travels!

Wherever you're coming from and however you're getting here, travel safe. Be sure to keep an eye out for Jackson Hole Traveler's handy print edition in the airport and around town to use as your guide while you're in Jackson. Have a great trip!

I'm assuming there are 4 couples - when you say 8 adults.

If tee times are available, they could golf at the JH Golf and Tennis Club -

https://www.jhgtc.com/

You may want to consider a scenic float trip instead of ww rafting. You can ww raft in many other states. There's only one float trip (several vendors) with the incredible scenery of the Tetons inside GTNP.

We like Solitude -

I don't know. I've taken nordic ski lessons there in winter. Am not familiar with that lodging. Someone did stay there in the last year but not sure if they reported back. I'll see if I can find the thread.

The hideout is not far from downtown Wilson so good thing. Other places "in" Wilson can take a half hour just to get to downtown Wilson before continuing to Jackson, the Parks, etc.

Whitewater rafting in North Carolina and neighboring states is immensely superior to Wyoming's share of the Snake River here. I would however consider a scenic float trip from Deamans Bar to Moose, the most spectacular stretch of scenic river in the National Park System.

The advantage of being in downtown Jackson is the world class dining, Silver Dollar Bar (not Cowboy IMO), etc. You DO NOT want to be driving HWY 22 back to Wilson in the dark, it is one of the deadliest stretches of road for moose there is anywhere. The Rodeo also ends after dark so staying in Wilson would be monumentally unwise for that too.

Sounds like fun. It is, after all, your vacation, not mine. We have some of the best shopping and golfing in the Temperate Zone.

W hile Jackson Hole is perhaps best known as a luxurious yet low-key ski resort town, replete with private cabins and chalets, there’s so much more to the picturesque Wyoming locale than just snowy mountains in the winter. Yes, skiing is a huge part of Jackson Hole’s appeal, thanks to the impressive array of alpine ski runs and terrain, but the destination is also a dream vacation spot for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts, with access to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park as well as the National Elk Refuge. There are plenty of winter activities aside from skiing, including snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sledding and, of course, a lively après-ski scene. That’s not to say Jackson Hole is exclusively a winter destination; if you are visiting in the warmer months, there are countless adventures and activity options, including whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, kayaking and more.

Don’t fret if you’re not sure where to stay out west in America, as Jackson Hole also boasts an impressive high-end hotel scene, from longtime historic mainstays and secluded boutique properties to modern luxury lodges and Western-themed accommodations. Below, see the best luxury hotels to book for your next getaway to Jackson Hole.

  • 7680 Granite Loop Rd, Teton Village, WY 83025

The Four Seasons in Jackson Hole boasts one of the best ski-in, ski-out situations right from Teton Village, as the five-star property has a dream ski slope-side locale right at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The hotel also has you covered for all your ski rental needs, thanks to their complimentary ski concierge. The Four Seasons is also just a few miles away from the entrance to Grand Teton National Park.

The hotel is composed of 155 rooms, as well as 57 residential units. The mountain-inspired decor is expressed via a whole lot of stone, leather and earth tones, and the majority of the guest rooms have gas fireplaces. The nearly 12,000-square-foot spa is a major draw here, with 16 treatment rooms and plenty of soothing services that will surely be appreciated after a day filled with skiing, hiking, biking or all the other mountain pursuits. There’s also an outdoor pool with three whirlpools, which is open year-round, in addition to a fitness center.

While there are plenty of restaurants to try in the town of Jackson Hole, the Four Seasons also offers multiple dining options, including The Handle Bar, Westbank Grill and the Ascent Lounge. If you’re heading here in the spring or summer, don’t fret, as there’s still plenty to do, and the hotel will arrange everything from whitewater rafting and fly fishing to stargazing or a safari in the National Elk Refuge wildlife sanctuary.

  • 1535 NE Butte Rd, Jackson, WY 83001

Amangani feels super secluded, but it’s rather conveniently a mere 20-minute drive from Jackson Hole Airport. The hotel, part of Aman resorts, is composed of just 40 suites and private homes, all of which are outfitted with king-size beds, fireplaces, picture windows and a terrace or balcony, with dreamy Grand Teton Mountain Range views. The minimalist decor has an American West-focused slant, with woven cowhide chairs and lots of redwood paneling.

The spa is equipped with four treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and two steam rooms, with access to the outdoor infinity pool and hot tub. All the dining outlets are exclusively available to hotel guests; there’s one main on-site restaurant, The Grill, as well as the Grand Terrace Bar and Zinc Bar.

  • 3275 Village Dr, Teton Village, WY 83025

For a private, boutique hotel experience, look no further than Caldera House. The intimate property is composed of just eight guest rooms, and is located right in the heart of Jackson’s Teton Village.

All of the rooms, designed by award-winning studios Commune Design and Carney Logan Burke, are equipped with a chef’s kitchen, dining area, wood-burning fireplace, living room and private outdoor space. It’s a western-style decor vibe, with fluffy white chairs, Navajo-inspired rugs and wood accents. For dining, there’s Corsa and the more casual Southcable Cafe, as well as Shin Shin. One of the biggest perks, though, is surely access to the Alpine Members Lounge, which is exclusively open to hotel guests and members, for a fun après-ski scene complete with fire pits.

  • 120 N Glenwood St. Jackson Hole, WY 83001

Hotel Jackson opened in 2015, and became the first LEED-certified hotel to open in the town. Situated right by the historic town square, it’s composed of 55 bright and airy rooms, including four suites, all of which are fitted with wood paneling and natural gas fireplaces, and some of which have private balconies. Figs restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Mediterranean- and Lebanese-inspired cuisine. There’s also a cozy library and a rooftop hot tub.

  • 112 Center St, Jackson, WY 83001

Opened in 2021, the Cloudveil is a newer addition to the Jackson Hole hotel scene. It’s conveniently situated right on the Town Square in downtown Jackson, with interiors inspired by Jackson Hole’s natural landscape, starting with a massive stone boulder and locally-made desk blotter at the check-in desk.

The 100 guest rooms and suites are fitted with custom wood and leather furniture, in addition to a fireplace, flat screen TVs and wifi. For dining, there’s The Bistro, a Parisian brasserie-style eatery, as well as a rooftop terrace with impressive mountain views. There’s also a fitness center, pool and hot tub.

  • 50 Glenwood St, Jackson, WY 83001

The Wort Hotel was built in 1941, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It sits just a half block from the elk antler arches marking the Jackson Town Square in downtown.

The historic hotel is fully western-themed, but in an authentic way. There are 55 rooms, many of which are adorned with some of the 200 pieces of original Western art in the hotel’s collection. There’s also a fitness center with a Jacuzzi.

During the winter ski season, a complimentary hotel shuttle takes guests right to the ski slopes at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The old West-style hotel will also organize a private ski fitting as well as a ski valet, and there’s a daily après ski. Don’t forget to stop at the Silver Dollar Bar, an iconic Jackson Hole institution with over 2,000 silver dollars inlaid in the bar.

8 places that locals go for a vacation in the USA

Jun 4, 2024 • 13 min read

From the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to summer in Seattle, Lonely Planet staffers share some of their favorite US destinations © JillLang / Getty Images

The US is vast, so big that choosing between coast or mountains, islands or quaint small towns can get downright overwhelming.

But there are some places that we keep going back to year after year, season after season. These places just hit right. The food, the fun, the beauty all combine to make these vacations fill our cups and remind us what makes living in this weird and wild country so engaging. We polled our staff and these are the places in the US that they just can't get enough of.

Looking for more inspiration? Here are the top places to visit in USA

Low light of Cashiers Lake at Cashiers City, North Carolina

1. Cashiers, NC

Ann Douglas Lott, Associate Editor

My family has been vacationing in Cashiers, North Carolina , for almost 20 years. My aunt and uncle loved it so much that they eventually retired there, so it has become an annual ritual to visit them.

Cashiers is one of the closest access points to the Blue Ridge Mountains for those of us below the range, a teensy bit north of the Georgia border. By far, the best part of this lush mountainous region is that it's SO pleasant in the summer. It gets warm, but I'm never sweating, which is rare in the South. The main town is simply adorable and worth exploring, about a 20-minute drive from the equally cute town of Highlands.

There are also endless outdoor activities. Climb mountain trails (I love Whiteside Mountain), hike to cascading waterfalls like Silver Run Falls, and relax on peaceful lakes. My perfect itinerary involves the smoked trout dip and fried chicken salad sandwich from Cornucopia , a drink on Canyon Kitchen 's grassy lawn with a mountain view, and vintage shopping at Victoria’s Closet . Grab your morning coffee from Buck's Coffee Cafe in Cashiers' town center and enjoy it on the front porch, or take it to go, sipping away as you walk through the 13-acre Village Green.

For a high-end stay, head to High Hampton Resort or Old Edward Inn in nearby Highlands. For a more affordable getaway, opt for Skyline Lodge near Highlands – it’s very Frank Lloyd Wright-esque.

2. Ojai, California

Annie Greenberg, Senior Director of Creative

The  California valley town of Ojai is a little bohemian idyll about an hour and a half from Los Angeles. I love to spend a night or weekend up there whenever I’m on the West Coast, and I even got married in a secret botanical garden there. Despite its closeness to LA, Ojai transports you to a different world. Leave behind bumper-to-bumper traffic and city life for the mountains, wine, and a dash of country flair.

The area is made up of primarily local businesses that keep Ojai’s signature style alive, and around every corner, expect to find unique  threads and trinkets to be loved for years. A California perk is that regardless of when you go, expect beauty all year round. Dine at local spots like the Duchess , Pinyon Pizza , and Full Moon Izakaya . Have a lazy afternoon or evening trying flights of beer at Topa Topa Brewery .

I tend to spend as much of my time outside as possible, picking pixie tangerines in a sprawling orange grove, wandering the local farmers markets and sampling the fresh produce, or tasting wine at one of the many local vineyards. Lace up your boots for a day of hiking in the rolling hills and round off this perfect trip with a stay at the Capri , a mid-century motel renovated to perfection, or the Ojai Valley Inn , the area’s most luxurious lodging with pools and a spa to boot.

3. Warren Dunes State Park, Sawyer, Michigan

Erin Leczycki, Photo Editor

I grew up going to Warren Dunes State Park , and spent every summer on its beach, which is one of the best beaches on Michigan 's west coast, with massive sand dunes that offer captivating views of Lake Michigan. There are 6 miles of winding trails that span the beach and woods and – an extra perk for those of age – Warren Dunes is near some of Southwest Michigan's best wineries.

Hit the beach, first and foremost. Try your hand at sandboarding, rent kayaks or paddle boards. Once you have gotten your fill of the water, hit the trails. They are great all year around, but especially in the fall. The colors are beautiful and the warm sand, unlike in summer, is perfect for going barefoot without burning your feet.

For wine lovers, take a tour of Round Barn or Tabor Hill , and if you prefer hops, stop into Greenbush or Silver Harbor , two of the area's most popular breweries. Keep up the momentum with a visit to the local orchards or blueberry farms where you can pick your own.

There are several local restaurants that sling great bites. Mikey’s Drive-in  serves casual fare, for classic bar food head to Lake Street Eats and a taste top-notch falafel at Cafe Gulistan . Take a break from the sun with a visit to the Beach Bucket or Oink’s Dutch for a scoop of ice cream.

The area is a popular camping spot, so rent a cabin, load up the RV, set up a tent, and enjoy some of Michigan’s finest! If you prefer something slightly more upscale, the Lakeside Inn is a quaint and fun alternative.

4. Santa Fe, NM

Emily Dubin, Senior Book Designer

My family roots are in the Santa Fe area, so we would regularly visit there from Denver , where I grew up. It's close enough to drive, but it feels a world away from Colorado , or really anywhere in the US, with the culture of a big city — world-class art, incredible restaurants, centuries of history — packed into the accessibility and charm of a small town.

The ubiquitous adobe architecture and Native culture give Santa Fe a distinctive feel, and there are plenty of great activities. Hike Pecos National Monument, looking out for ancient pottery shards still littering the ground. Pay a visit to the International Folk Art Museum , wander the shops near the Plaza  and check out the art galleries on Canyon Road. The Railyard Farmers Market , held on Saturdays, is especially excellent during chile season in the fall. For an immersive art experience, including potential sensory overload, Santa Fe is home to the original Meow Wolf . If you're there for the holidays, the annual Christmas Eve farolito (paper lantern) walk, in the Historic East Side neighborhood, is magical.

Santa Fe knows food, too. La Choza  serves authentic New Mexican fare, go to  Izanami for Japanese with the beautifully zen surroundings of Ten Thousand Waves resort and spa, and taste the best chile relleno at  Palacio Cafe . For an inventive breakfast or lunch visit  Modern General , also with a well-curated store, and don't miss tasting the spiced hot chocolate at specialist chocolate company Kakawa Cafe .

Santa Fe is a fairly compact, small city, so staying anywhere near the Plaza ensures walkability. La Fonda is full of historic charm, while the Inn on the Alameda is a bit removed for a quieter stay. Away from downtown, El Rey is a restored '50s motor inn with a fun ambiance and a great bar.

Traveling without your own wheels? Here are the best places to go car-free in the US

5. Highway 30A, FL

The beach towns along Hwy 30A are a top destination for Southerners (I don't know anyone in Alabama who hasn't gone here). I grew up on fall trips to Inlet Beach at the far eastern end of the highway when it's still warm enough to be on the beach, but the crowds aren't unbearable. It's grown so much in so little time, but it's still such a special little pocket of Florida , with one dreamy beach town after another, each wildly different from the one before it.

The true beauty of this place is how you can seamlessly travel between towns (by bike is a must) and experience all of their different vibes, from the dreamy Dutch-inspired lanes of Rosemary Beach to the peaceful, laid-back stretch of Grayton Beach. It's so special how you can get anyone here without a car. Some towns like Alys and Watercolor also have nature trails at the back that are fun to explore on two wheels.

No matter where you land on 30A, you have to go to the Red Bar . It's been around forever and has a relaxed beach shack vibe. Other great places to eat include  Bud and Alley's beachside rooftop for seafood lunch in Seaside, Old Florida Fish House for a sunset dinner, and Blue Mountain Beach Creamery or the Donut Hole for a sweet treat. The white-sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico are so stunning to lay on, swim, play volleyball, or even paddleboard.

A moose drinking from a waterway as the sun reflects of mountains in the distance

6. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Deepa Lakshmin, Director of Social Media

I've been to Jackson Hole three times (once in summer, twice in winter) over long weekends with friends. I also learned to ski there as an adult, but Jackson Hole is a special kind of ski town where you don't have to actually ski or snowboard to have a great time.

In the summer, drive out to the Tetons and kayak at Jenny Lake. In the winter, keep an eye out for moose. Wander the charming town square, then dance your heart out at Million Dollar Cowboy Bar . If you own cowboy boots, this is the place to wear them.

Fresh off the slopes, head to the Mangy Moose walking distance from the mountain for live music, classic bar bites, and all your après needs, plus there's no need to change out of your gear. For a nice dinner out, try Glorietta Trattoria or Snake River Grill . For takeout, pick up Liberty Burger or sandwiches from Cowboy Coffee . Teton Tiger has an odd mix of Asian fusion cuisine – personally, I don't trust any menu with both chicken tikka masala and ramen – but its cocktails and atmosphere are fun.

If you are feeling the urge to learn how to navigate the slopes, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has a $50 beginner pass you can buy in person only, so I practiced in the easier areas for a few days before upgrading to the more expensive full-mountain lift pass. Who wants to pay for runs they can't even go down? (Yet!)

If you're going with a big group, rent a house for the full experience. We most recently stayed at Spring Creek Ranch , which had an outdoor hot tub (score!) and was walking distance from Aman Resorts' Amangani – out of our budget but lovely for drinks and a spectacular view of the Tetons.

Chamidae Ford, Associate Writer

I grew up in Western Washington and went to college in Seattle , so the city has a special place in my heart. But I am not exaggerating when I say summer in Seattle is heaven on earth. Every summer, I try to make a trip back to soak up the sun and enjoy the city. It's the perfect temperature, we don’t have East Coast bugs or humidity, and you’re rarely more than 15 minutes from a body of water you can swim in. What more can you ask for?

Have a picnic at Gas Works Park and watch the sunset across Lake Union. Grab your friends and head to Golden Gardens Beach for a bonfire and cold plunges in the Puget Sound. Personally, I love to get Ezells famous fried chicken (Oprah-approved) and head to Madison beach. You can expect to jump off diving boards and listen to thumping dance music on most sunny days. On Sundays, stop by the Freemont Sunday Market for street food, loads of vintage shopping and handmade trinkets. Grab bikes and cruise along the Burke-Gilman , a 27-mile trail that winds throughout the city.

We are eating good in Seattle, and each neighborhood has a few life-changing gems. Head to Mighty-o for some of the best vegan donuts around. Milk Drunk has a mouthwatering chicken sandwich, Pink Door is every Seattilites favorite Italian food, and brunch at Joli is always a treat.

Since I am from the area, I tend to stay with friends, but Seattle has some fabulous hotels. There's the quirky Graduate Hotel in the University District, or  Lotte Hotel in Downtown, which is stunning and keeps you close to the tourist attractions like Pike Place Market . The Mediterranean Inn in Queen Anne has beautiful views, and you get a feel for how locals experience the city in its cozy neighborhoods.

8. Maui, Hawaii

Brekke Fletcher, Senior Director of Content

When I was a wee babe growing up in Los Angeles, our most frequent island escape was Maui . We went so many times I lost count. The magic of this place is in my bones for life.

When the wildfires devastated Lahaina last year, the loss and grief was overwhelming. It was impossible to take in. It still is. Now that some time has passed, I’m ready to return, and when I do my plan is to recreate at least some of my most cherished memories.

When in Northwest Maui, we love to start our day by walking from our condo in  Napili to the Honolua Store in the Kapalua resort , where I also go to play tennis. Afterwards we make our way back to Napili via the  Kapalua Coastal Trail . The beach at Napili Bay is one of the best on the island, and it’s essential to rent gear at Snorkel Bob’s to take in all the beauty and wonder under the sea. You’re also pretty much guaranteed to see giant Green sea turtles – but please keep your distance and do not touch.

If we don’t cook out (we stock up on provisions at Napili Market), our evening outing might be sushi at Sansei or a sundowner at Merriman’s . Or we’ll wander around Kaanapali and end up at Leilani’s . Breakfast is always (and most deliciously) at the Gazebo . Order yourself some pog (pineapple, orange and guava juice) and just try to finish the heaping stack of macadamia nut pancakes! I also cannot resist the breakfast burrito.

From there, we might make our way to Paia for some shopping, grab a burger at the Stopwatch in Makawao, or if we’re feeling like going big, we’ll have a daytime feast at Mama’s Fish House , choosing from the listing of the day’s fresh catches while savoring the best freshly-baked bread on the island. I also have to have at least one Mai Tai (makes me miss my late father so much just contemplating this, I’m weeping).

And finally, if we’re feeling super adventurous, we’ll wake up at 3am to watch the sunrise at Haleakalā  then bike down the volcano, all before breakfast. Or we’ll drive the road to Hana and stop along the way to take photos and maybe climb down to the black sand beach. I cannot wait to get back.
