23 Insider Tips for Your Trip to Rhodes

Waste no time searching for the best in this abundant island – we have done it for you..

Lina Kapetaniou | July 22nd, 2021

Despite being best known for mass tourism, in recent years Rhodes has been offering a greater variety of exclusive experiences. Avoid busy Sokratous street in the Old Town, and instead visit the Street of the Knights in the evening hours. Avoid the better-known beaches and drive south – the further south, the fewer crowds you will encounter. Pick your accommodation depending on the kind of holiday you have in mind, head for the hinterland, and discover the island’s many different faces.

1. A stay with medieval hues

The Old Town is quite busy and developed, but there are many quiet corners where you can truly enjoy the atmosphere. Here you will find two boutique guest houses, totally in harmony with the spirit of the medieval architecture and décor.

The 700-year-old building housing Marco Polo Mansion preserves the imprint of all the nations which passed through Rhodes’ Old Town. The floors are the work of the Italians, while Mehmet Aga, who lived here, left the small Ottoman-style windows and the hamam. Brightly colored painted ceilings, old wooden doors, carefully selected furniture and a beautiful internal yard, where dinner is served, complete the experience.

Kokkini Porta also has a rich history on display: from a knight’s house in 1350 to the home of the Muslim teacher in 1700, to a carpenter’s workshop in 1912 to a derelict building in 2008, it has been restored with great care and respect for its identity. The Deniz suite has a great view from the sahnisi, the covered wooden terrace.

Marco Polo Mansion: Aghiou Fanouriou 40-42, Tel. (+30) 22410.25562, marcopolomansion.gr, from 80 euros for a double room, including breakfast.

Kokkini Porta: Arch. Efthimiou 24, Kokkini Pyli, Tel. (+30) 22410.75114, kokkiniporta.com, from 375 euros a night for a 2-person suite with breakfast.

2. Fit on vacation

From pilates and beach volleyball to evening tennis and aerial yoga. Gennadi Grand Resort is ideal for those who don’t want to give up their fitness routine on holiday. The resort has three large open-air swimming pools, which also offer aqua aerobics classes, an indoor pool, a gym with treadmills and weights, while for an extra charge guests can hire a personal trainer, and go on hiking and mountain biking tours.

Gennadi Grand Resort: Gennadi, Tel. (+30) 22440.43043, gennadigrandresort.com, from 200 euros for a double bedroom with breakfast.

3. Historical luxury

It was named “the big hotel of the roses” after the colorful rose garden that surrounded it. The Governor of the Dodecanese commissioned its construction by a Venetian firm, and the hotel opened its doors in 1927. Since then, prominent visitors to the island, from Eleftherios Venizelos and Winston Churchill to Aristotle Onassis and Andreas Papandreou have stayed at the Grande Albergo delle Rose . A complete renovation undertaken in 2002 was like a rebirth for the hotel.

All rooms and suits exude an air of gentility, while they come equipped with a jacuzzi, Bulgari body care products and 24-hour room service.

Grande Albergo delle Rose: G. Papanikolaou 5, Rhodes, Tel. (+30) 22410.97400, gadr.gr, from 250 for a double room with breakfast.

4. Hi-tech situations

The top floors of the Rodos Palace hotel from the 7th to the 17th floor host rooms and suites built on the abav2 concept. Large sea view windows and modern design offer exclusive privileges and hi-tech convenience: ultra-fast WiFi, touch-panel light, temperature and humidity controls, smart TV. Even the showers are controlled through a touch panel.

Rodos Palace hotel: Leof. Iraklidon (Trianton), Ixia, Tel. (+30) 22410.97222, rodos-palace.gr, from 160 euros with breakfast.

6. A day in Lindos

It could well be the main town of a Cycladic island. Lindos, with its white houses and the acropolis perched on the top of the hill, offers an almost barren, lunar landscape bathed in the summer sun. The temperature rises considerably in the summer months, and the truth is there not much shade to be found. Start from the spa of the Caesars Gardens hotel , a true haven of cool. Pools, moisturising treatments, massage and thalassotherapy will revive you until late afternoon. Sunset is the ideal hour to wander the little alleys of Lindos.

At the Cozze Champagne Rooftop Cocktail Bar you can enjoy a view of the village and the sea while sipping a glass of champagne or a well-made cocktail.

Caesars Gardens hotel: Tel. (+30) 22440.31537, caesarsgardens.com, spa sessions start at 50 euros.

7. Avant-garde Rhodian cuisine

This is how Executive Chef Giorgos Troumouhis and his team describe the dishes served at Noble Gourmet Restaurant . Perched on the top floor of the Elysium Resort & Spa in Kallithea, you will enjoy the unbelievable view and a tasting menu inspired by local ingredients and the Rhodian cooking tradition, made using contemporary techniques and a fresh gaze. Highlights include pitaroudia (chickpea fritters) and salt cod with roe.

8. There is only one Mavrikos

The Dodecanese were still under Italian rule when Mavrikos first opened its doors. In the cobbled courtyard with its arches and mulberry trees you will taste award-winning dishes, which are traditional with a creative touch. The food has the same nobility and gentility as the owners and staff. Choose wine from local wineries, served at a fair price.

Mavrikos: Lindos, Tel. (+30) 22440.31232.

9. Meze at sunset

On the coastal road, KoumbaRaki is the very definition of a good meze place. Fresh fried red mullet, cuttlefish in its ink, grilled calamari, a wide choice of ouzo and tsipouro. The ideal time to visit is at sunset, when you can enjoy the view of the sun diving into the sea.

KoumbaRaki: Akti Miaouli 20, Rhodes, Tel. (+30) 6944-310305.

10. An 89-year-old fish taverna

The Koza family has been serving seafood by the sea on Stegnon beach since 1932. Today, the third generation continues the tradition, keeping the freshness of the ingredients and adding new ideas such as monkfish in beer batter served on a beetroot purée, or grilled shrimp served with boiled potatoes and tartare sauce. Don’t miss the cuttlefish and rice, seafood spaghetti and smoked octopus. The bonus is a long wine and ouzo list.

12. The springs at Kallithea

The 1st of July 1929 was a very hot day on Rhodes. This did not prevent the baths at Kallithea from holding a grand opening in the presence of the Italian King Victor Emmanuel. The Italians were the first to recognise the healing properties of the natural springs, and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, and for this reason the buildings follow the notion of “architectura naturale,” which harmonises with the natural environment. Wander through the cobbled atria, walk down to the beach, and visit a photo exhibit tracing the history of the baths.

Unfortunately, access to the springs is not available at present as the facilities are scheduled for renovation.

Kallithea Springs: Tel. (+30) 22410.65564, open 08.00-18.00, 5 euros.

13. Satisfying beach life

Most beaches on the island are long and sandy, particular in the south. Closer to town, choose Afantou for sheer length – however many people there are you will always find a free spot. A little before you get there, Traganou has fine pebbles and several caves. On the same side, and a little closer to town, is Anthony Quinn beach . Its pine trees, pebbles and azure waters made the famous actor fall in love with the beach and want to buy it, something he was not able to do. Arrive early to find a free spot.

For a quick swim in town, the cosmopolitan Elli beach is ideal. More daring swimmers will attempt a dive from the platform. For coffee, food and cocktails, head right to the Ronda beach bar . A good choice close to town is Aghia Marina , and the tasteful Santa Marina beach bar .

Ronda beach bar: Tel. (+30) 6937.404.446.

Santa Marina beach bar: Rhodes-Kallithea road, Tel. (+30) 6932.917.427.

14. Southern safari

The south of the island is wilder and less touristy. The exception is Prasonissi , the little island off the southern tip of Rhodes which is connected to the main island by a narrow neck of land. The location is exposed to the winds, and has become a paradise for surfers and other watersports fans. Water skis, inflatables, jet skis, wakeboards and other equipment is available to rent from one of the many rental shops located along the beach.

If you prefer something quieter, a few kilometers to the north you will find Aghios Georgios beach , one of the few non-organized beaches on the island – long, sandy, and with crystal clear waters. It is approached via a good quality unpaved road. A little further north, at Lahania, the Mojito Beach Bar is famous for its cocktails, while Sole Giaguaro serves delicious Italian cuisine with the signature of Giovanni Scaraggi, a recent contestant in a TV cooking show.

Mojito Beach Bar: Tel. (+30) 6957.672.682.

Sole Giaguaro: Tel. (+30) 22440.46262, open daily 18:00-23:00, reservations essential.

15. Canoe and biking adventure

Forest and lake on Rhodes? You may not expect it, but in the northwest of the island the construction of a dam built in 1989 has created a unique wetland habitat around the artificial lake of Apolakkia. The protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network, and home to the Rhodescape Adventure Park , created by three young people with a love for nature and the island. Based on low-impact tourism principles, the park is built from wood, and features a café and a multitude of activities for adults and children: from archery, horse riding and canoeing to biking and zip lining over the lake.

16. Coffee, breakfast, and drinks in town

One of the best spots for coffee and breakfast in Rhodes town is the Yachting Club Café next to the Mandraki marina. The trees offer their shade, the service is exceptional, the coffee is superb – and it stays open late if you are in the mood for a relaxed drink. You will find a mellow mood at The Last Butler , which specializes in jazz and expertly made cocktails. A different experience is on offer at Sissitio (Socratous and Ippodamou, Old Town, tel. 22410-35773) which is housed in a listed monument that in the past served as a place of worship and a poorhouse. Ideal for brunch or afternoon coffee in the cobbled courtyard.

Yachting Club Café: Plateia Neoriou 3-5, Mandraki, Tel. (+30) 22410.75723.

The Last Butler: Amarantou 45, Rhodes, Tel. (+30) 22410.38981.

17. A breath of fresh air in Kritinia

Built on a rise, with a panoramic view of the sea, the village of Kritinia is famous for its castle. It was built in the late 15th century by the Venetians to protect the western side of the island from Ottoman raids. A good time to visit is the evening, when the heat has subsided, and the sun sets opposite the castle.

The village hosts a small folk museum with everyday objects from earlier eras. The village square enjoys the shade of two large trees, and looks out on the sea. You can enjoy coffee here or at the Mylos café by the village entrance, which also has a good view. Around 5 kilometers from the village is Kopria beach , which is ideal for diving, with fine pebbles and blue waters.

Mylos café: Tel. (+30) 22460.31231.

18. Through the eucalyptus

For about 1.5 kilometers, you will see nothing but eucalyptus trees on either side. The narrow road which joins the Rhodes-Lindos highway with the village of Kolybia is a work of the Italians, which are said to have chosen the eucalyptus for its insect repellent qualities. Turn right at the end of the road for the Atlantica Imperial Resort & Spa , home to the Mylos and Blue Bay restaurants, which are also open to non-guests. Both serve creative cuisine under the direction of chef Ilias Kakouris.

Atlantica Imperial Resort & Spa: Kolymbia, Tel. (+30) 22410.57000.

19. The Old Town from above

How would it be to see the Old Town, with its narrow alleyways, its thick walls protecting it from the outside world, its arches and orate buildings, from above? This opportunity is now offered by the Ministry of Culture, which has recently opened to the public a route along the Old City walls . Another way to experience the atmosphere of the medieval town of Rhodes within the walls is to take a stroll in the evening in the calm, quiet streets away from the crowds and the shops, like Ippoton and Omirou streets which skirt the walls. It is worth taking a stroll to sense the mystique which emanates from the rich history of the place.

Old City walls: starting in the courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Master, Monday-Friday 12:00-15:00, Tel. (+30) 22413.65270.

20. Filerimou Monastery

Sited on a hill, surrounded by cypress and pine trees, is the monastery of Filerimou. Located just 11 kilometers from the city of Rhodes, it is an oasis of cool with dense trees and many paths for walks around the monastery, and views of Ialysos and the sea. The monastery itself, built in the 14th century during the era of the Knights is an architectural masterpiece, with stone arches and little chapels.

You will spot it from a distance: on a hill at Faliraki you will see two round domes. This is the observatory of the Astronomy Café , a unique space which combines observation of the stars with coffee, drinks or cocktails. On arrival, after walking past the sundial and the signs explaining the planets and the solar system, you will enter the building housing the telescope, to observe the craters on the moon, the stars and the nearest planets, after which you can enjoy a cocktail by the sea.

Can I travel to Rhodes? Latest Foreign Office advice for Greece and what to do if your holiday is cancelled

The uk government is not advising people against travelling to rhodes, despite the fires.

Tourists wait in the airport's departure hall as evacuations are underway due to wildfires, on the Greek island of Rhodes on July 23, 2023. Locals and tourists fled hotspots on Rhodes, as firefighters battled a blaze that had sparked the country's largest-ever fire evacuation. Firefighters were bracing for high winds that have been forecast for the afternoon and that could hamper their efforts. (Photo by Will VASSILOPOULOS / AFP) (Photo by WILL VASSILOPOULOS/AFP via Getty Images)

Wildfires continued to burn across Greece on Monday, with the islands of Rhodes and Corfu – both popular tourist spots – worst affected.

Fires burning since Wednesday forced 19,000 people to be evacuated from homes and tourist accommodation on Rhodes over the weekend, as a blaze reached resorts on the island’s south-eastern coast.

British tourists camped out overnight in schools and sports halls, as well as the island’s airport, after being forced to leave hotels that became engulfed by the wildfires .

Foreign Office minister, Andrew Mitchell, said his “best estimate” of the number of British tourists on Rhodes currently is “between 7,000 and 10,000”.

Tour operators Jet2, Tui and Corendon cancelled flights leaving for Rhodes. easyJet said on Sunday it was operating two repatriation flights on Monday from Rhodes to London’s Gatwick, in addition to the nine flights that are already planned. The airline said it will add another repatriation flight on Tuesday.

“We are in the seventh day of the fire and it hasn’t been controlled,” Rhodes’ deputy mayor, Konstantinos Taraslias, told state broadcaster ERT.

Is it safe to travel to Rhodes?

The UK Government is not advising people against travelling to Rhodes, despite the fires.

Mr Mitchell said: “It’s important to remember that only 10 per cent of the island is affected by these fires. And therefore it is the tourist companies and the holiday experts who are best placed to give guidance on whether or not a family or individuals’ holidays are going to be ruined by these events.

“What we’re telling people to do is to keep in touch with their tourist company, and that is the right advice.”

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are actively monitoring the fires in Rhodes and are in close contact with local authorities.

“The FCDO has deployed a rapid deployment team of five FCDO staff and four British Red Cross responders to Rhodes to support British nationals whose safety is our top priority. They will be based at Rhodes international airport to assist with travel documents and liaise with Greek authorities and travel operators on the ground.

“British nationals in Rhodes should contact their travel operator in the first instance for any queries regarding the rescheduling of flights and continue to check our updated travel advice for information.”

Greece is often hit by wildfires during the summer months but climate change has led to more extreme heatwaves across southern Europe .

Temperatures over the past week have exceeded 40ºC in many parts of the country and are forecast to persist in the coming days.

What should I do if my holiday is cancelled?

On Sunday, Tui suspended its flights to Rhodes until Tuesday, while Jet2 Holidays cancelled its trips until next Sunday.

Airlines including easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways are continuing to operate flights.

A spokesperson for easyJet said it was doing “all it can” to help customers in Rhodes and invited those due to travel to or from the island until Saturday to change the date for free.

‘We’re in Greece with no AC and it’s 32°C at night – it’s brutal’

'Greece's heatwave feels dystopian - we can't go outside during the day'

British Airways said it would “continue to carefully monitor the situation” and was in touch with customers in affected areas to provide assistance.

Thomas Cook has cancelled all holidays to Kiotari and Lardos – the areas of Rhodes most at risk – up to and including 31 July.

If your flight or holiday is cancelled by the operator you should be entitled to a full refund.

However, unless you are advised to cancel your holiday by the Foreign Office, there is no guarantee you will get your money back if you choose not to travel and the trip is not cancelled by the operator.

Helen Tonks, a mother of six from Cheshire, said she was flown into a “living nightmare” by Tui at 11pm on Saturday and discovered her hotel had been closed.

She said she and her family were “abandoned” and forced to sleep with hundreds of others on a school floor.

A Tui spokesperson said the firm’s “main priority” was the safety of customers and its staff were doing “all they can” to help those affected by the fires.

Where are the wildfires on Rhodes?

The two largest wildfires are near the villages of Eleousa and Laerma, both of which are towards the centre of the island.

At least three hotels in the seaside village of Kiotari on the south coast have been affected, as have the popular resorts of Kalathos and Pefki.

tui travel to rhodes advice

One British tourist, Ian Wakefield, told Times Radio he spent the night in a school playground in Faliraki after being moved from his hotel in Pefki.

“It didn’t really feel real – being in imminent danger of being burned to death,” he said. “Between midnight and around 5am we were going through an evacuation which was pretty chaotic.

“There were a lot of upset people and children who were understandably quite hysterical. It was all very confusing – the instructions from the hotel manager were unclear.

“You had to make your own choice in the end. I’ve had to leave quite a lot of luggage in the hotel.”

Another British tourist, Kevin Evans, was evacuated twice with his wife and three young children, including a six-month old baby, on Saturday as the fire rapidly spread.

“We were originally in Kiotari in a villa but were moved to Gennadi at about 2pm,” he said.

“There were lots of people in Gennadi sent from the hotels – many in just swimsuits having been told to leave everything in the hotel.

“As night fell, we could see the fire on the top of the hills in Kiotari. They said all the hotels were on fire.

“About midnight the fire started moving on to our side of the hill. The alerts were going off again but not to everyone at once with some people telling us to stay put and others receiving messages to evacuate.

“We left at midnight with the fire very big and close.”

Greece wildfires: should you cancel your holiday to Rhodes?

By Sarah James

A fire fighting aircraft drops water over a wildfire close to village of Vati in the southern part of the Greek island...

Summer 2023 is turning into one of the hottest on record – in July, certain destinations across Europe broke records for the warmest days ever recorded from Spain to Italy – causing health concerns and disruption to locals and tourists alike.

Wildfires swept across Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands. The devastating fires happened at the peak of the island's summer holiday season; up to 10,000 British tourists were visiting Rhodes throughout July, and thousands more have holidays booked over the next couple of weeks and months.

What caused the fires in Rhodes?

The wildfires started on the week of Monday 17 July, but by Saturday 22 July had spread to the island's eastern coast, one of the most-travelled parts of Rhodes. The sudden pick-up of the fires resulted in some tourists leaving their holiday accommodation and staying in shelters while waiting to travel home. A lack of rain (much of the island has been dry for up to seven weeks leading up to the fires spreading) and hot temperatures contributed to the problem.

Is it safe to travel to Rhodes?

As of Tuesday 1 August, the Greek authorities lifted the state of emergency in Rhodes. The FCDO does not currently advise against travel to Rhodes – the official advice on the gov.uk website for those stranded in Rhodes is to “contact your airline or travel operator who can assist you with return travel to the UK.” To those who have holidays to Rhodes booked this summer, it advises, “If you are planning to travel to any areas affected by wildfires, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel.” However, some tour operators and airlines have cancelled both flights and package holidays to Rhodes.

Which airlines have cancelled flights to Rhodes?

The following airlines are altering their flight schedule to avoid taking more tourists to Rhodes, and to bring back stranded British tourists.

  • Jet2: all flights operating as normal.
  • Tui : all flights operating as normal.
  • Easyjet: all flights operating as normal.
  • Ryanair: all flights operating as normal.
  • British Airways: all flights operating as normal.

Are airlines charging tourists to change their holiday plans?

It really depends on who you booked with, so keep checking in with your tour operator for the latest information.

  • Jet2: as all flights to Rhodes until Sunday 30 July have been cancelled, Jet2 offered customers either a refund or the opportunity to rebook at a later date.
  • Tui : all customers booked on cancelled flights will receive a refund.
  • Easyjet: customers booked to travel up to and including Thursday 10 August are being contacted by the company to discuss options for travel. Those not wishing to travel are able to change their flights.
  • Ryanair: as all flights operate as normal, customers should not expect to be able to change their flights.
  • British Airways: customers needing to return from Rhodes earlier than their booked inbound flight were able to change their flight for free, and those not wishing to travel could postpone their outbound flights without charge – contact British Airways to double check whether this still applies to your booking.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my holiday?

Again, that depends. If you've booked flights and hotels separately, you need to check your airline's latest policy regarding travel to the island. If FCDO does not advise against travel to Rhodes, the airline is able to still operate flights and is not required to refund customers who wish not to travel.

If you've booked a package holiday which includes flights and accommodation, the tour operator has a duty of care to travellers which means that trips to the island's affected areas might be cancelled, in which case refunds would be offered. Again, this will vary by operator – so check in with the company you booked with.

Will my travel insurance cover wildfires?

No, as the FCDO advice doesn't tell travellers not to visit Rhodes. Plus, even if the FDCO did advise against travel to Rhodes, the two types of UK healthcare available abroad (UK Global Health Insurance Card GHIC and UK European Health Insurance CARD (EHIC) do not cover expenses in the case of natural disasters.

Are any other Greek islands affected?

Around 19,000 people have been evacuated from Corfu, although the wildfires there have, at the time of publishing, been brought under control.

Pirates of Rhodes Family-friendly Themed Cruise

Pirates of Rhodes Family-friendly Themed Cruise

Pirate Tim and Calypso the Parrot need your help to find their lost treasure. But first you need to be fully trained in all the skills you need to become a pirate. Eleni, one of our local crew members, says, 'Rhodes was once a hugely important trading post in the Mediterranean region, and pirates were a real threat to this success. The island's governors directed the Rhodes Navy to spend all their time policing the waters nearby in order to protect the ships carrying valuable goods such as salt and olive oil.' You'll join our plucky crew in search of the booty, and along the way everyone will get into the pirate spirit with some help from the pirate team on the boat. There'll be lots of fun activities for everyone to get involved with. For our little pirate crew, there'll be face painting and lots of pirate-themed games to play and for the older pirate crew, there'll be some pirate challenges to join in with. And no pirate adventure would be complete without a treasure map and clues to follow.Eleni says, 'Set sail with the pirates for a fun cruise with plenty to keep the kids occupied while the grown-ups can relax and admire the scenery. We'll stop at some lovely spots so all the pirates can cool off with a swim in the sea.' Fruit is included, plus there's a bar on board where you can buy drinks and snacks, in case all the excitement makes you hungry. This pirate cruise is all about swashbuckling fun for the whole family to enjoy.

What to do in Rhodes

Rhodes is a popular holiday destination, ideal for families as well as for those travelling as a couple or with friends. Culture, nature and gastronomy are on offer on this beautiful Greek island leaving everyone satisfied. Famous for its sandy beaches and turquoise sea, archaeological sites and natural landscapes, Rhodes offers experiences to suit all tastes. As if that wasn't enough, the island is located in a strategic position, ideal for island-hopping and exploring some of the hidden gems of the Aegean Sea. 6 best things to do in Rhodes

1. Explore Rhodes' Old Town

This Unesco World Heritage site is a genuine open-air museum. Enclosed within 14th-century walls built by the Knights of Rhodes, the Old Town will captivate you with its narrow streets and medieval architecture. Don't miss the Grand Master's Palace, which was almost completely rebuilt in the 20th century, and the Knights' Street, the most famous and atmospheric street in the Old Town. If you have time, take a walk up to Agios Stéfanos Mountain, on which stands an ancient acropolis and from which you can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views.

2. Visit the archaeological site of Camiro (Kamiros)

Kamiros was one of the three city-states of ancient Rhodes and is a very impressive archaeological site. The ruins are less than an hour's drive from Rhodes town and, despite dating mainly from the 3rd century B.C., they are still beautifully preserved. Stunning views of the Rhodes' west coast can be seen from the Acropolis at the top of the hill.

3. Take an excursion to Butterfly Valley If you travel to Rhodes during the summer, be sure to plan an excursion to the Butterfly Valley, which during the warmer months is filled with different species of butterflies. The valley is lush and unspoiled, a place where you can stroll among waterfalls and streams, enjoying the fresh air and admiring its colourful inhabitants. Covering some 60 hectares, the valley is a stone's throw away from the town centre and is one of the most fascinating attractions in the northern part of the island.

4. Admire the Acropolis of Lindos

Moving further south, on Rhodes' east coast, lies one of the island's most famous attractions: the Acropolis of Lindos. Perched on a hilltop, a visit to the site offers beautiful panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and St Paul's Bay. Admire the ancient ruins, which include a Doric temple dedicated to Athena a Byzantine church, and the medieval castle, built by the Knights of St John.

5. Take a day trip to the island of Simi

Spend a day exploring the nearby island of Simi, north of Rhodes, which can be reached in a couple of hours by ferry. Here you'll find wild pebble beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the port town of Simi, famous for its neoclassical buildings and pastel-coloured houses. The Monastery of Panormitis, in the homonymous bay, is the highlight of the island, famous for its Baroque bell tower.

6. Taste the local cuisine

No visit to Rhodes is complete without trying its delightful cuisine. Dine in a traditional Greek taverna and try 'lacan', made with goat and chickpeas, or go to a seafood restaurant to sample the fresh catch of the day, accompanied by ouzo or retsina, an aromatic wine. Don't forget to try 'mezedes', small dishes similar to Spanish tapas designed for sharing, a great way to try many different local specialities.

Get ready to visit Rhodes

What is the best time to visit Rhodes?

It is always a good time to visit Rhodes. Summers are long, running from May to September, winters are mild, although rather rainy, while autumn and spring are the perfect seasons for those seeking tranquillity and wanting to avoid the high season. The best months to enjoy a beach climate but skip the flocks of tourists are April, May and September.

How many days do you need to visit Rhodes?

Considering that the island is not very big, to visit Rhodes Old Town , one of the main archaeological sites and take a dip in the beautiful beaches, three days may be enough. But to take your time and enjoy a holiday of relaxation and cultural visits, we suggest staying in Rhodes for at least a week.

Airlines Tui, Jet2 , Ryanair and easyJet have issued updates and guidance for holidaymakers as wildfires spread through the Greek islands of Rhodes and Corfu. Thousands of people are being evacuated from the islands while foreign office minister Andrew Mitchell said on Monday morning up to 10,000 Brits remained on Rhodes.

Repatriation flights have already begun rescuing UK travellers from the area and two flights have already landed in Manchester Airport this morning, with another scheduled for tonight. Meanwhile boats have been dispatched to evacuate residents from Corfu after it was also hit by blazes.

Brits who are currently in Rhodes have been advised by the UK Foreign Office to first contact their airline or travel operator. Some airlines have already organised repatriation flights and have cancelled future departures to Rhodes, while all passengers are urged to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date information.

We are relentlessly working on improving the situation for customers and our teams are working closely with the local authorities.

“We’re gathering as much information as we can, and actively calling people to understand their whereabouts and circumstances. We are bringing in additional support staff on empty incoming flights, and we are trying to source hotel accommodation in the unaffected parts of the island.

“Return flights to the UK will continue to operate as planned. Please follow advice of local authorities. If you are at an evacuation centre, talk to our TUI reps and ensure they have all the contact data they need like scheduled departure times and any information about missing documents.

“Regularly check the TUI App for updates. If you change your location, please inform our teams. Try to keep at least one cell phone charged at all times, so we can contact you if needed.

UK travel companies are still selling holidays for Rhodes – even as the repatriation of distressed holidaymakers continues amid raging wildfires .

Leading tour operator Tui has cancelled all outbound departures to the Greek island up to Friday 28 July, and is allowing passengers due to travel over the weekend, on 29-30 July, to cancel for a full refund.

But it is also still selling holidays to parts of Rhodes that are unaffected by the wildfires .

“You’ll be spoilt for choice at Rodos Palace Hotel & Garden Suites, with five pools and five restaurants at your fingertips,” the Tui website promises.

“The Garden Suites give a home away from home feeling – that is if your house is set between Mediterranean greenery, just a stone’s throw from the beach.”

Travellers yearning for a short-notice escape to a Greek island may be tempted by a late deal of just £695 per person, based on a family of four and flying from Bristol airport on Saturday 29 July.

The Rodos Palace is on the strip of hotels between the island’s airport and Rhodes Town. This is on the northwest shore, and away from the wildfires in the centre and southeast of the island.

A much cheaper package is available the following day with easyJet Holidays. The package-holiday arm of Britain’s biggest budget airline is selling a week in Falaraki, staying at a self-catering property in Kremasti, close to the airport, for just £347 per person – including flights from London Gatwick on 30 July.

Jet2 , which has cancelled all holidays to Rhodes up to Sunday 30 July, is selling holidays for the following day at low prices: £386 per person for departure from Manchester on Monday 31 July, staying near the airport in Lalyssos at the Barbie Apartments.

Meanwhile, online travel agent Loveholidays appears to be selling holidays to Rhodes departing this Thursday from £881 per person.

The Liberal Democrats have urged the government to advise British nationals against all but essential travel to Rhodes. The party’s foreign affairs spokesperson, Layla Moran, said: “As wildfires blaze and thousands are evacuated, it is staggering that the Foreign Office travel guidance for Rhodes does not advise against all but essential travel.

“Thanks to Conservative ministers’ inaction, many families are unable to make a claim against their insurance, leaving them paying the penalty for deciding not to fly out to the island.”

All prices were researched at 10am on Tuesday 25 July and are per person for a family of four

British holidaymakers in Rhodes have reported being "stranded" at local schools and the airport after a wildfire forced some resorts to be evacuated. Thousands more travellers due to jet off there soon are now trying to get answers from their airlines and travel agents about whether or not their holiday can go ahead.

This morning (Sunday, July 23) major airline and package holiday provider Jet2 announced it has cancelled all flights and holidays which were due to fly out today, while TUI has said the "volatile" situation means it has cancelled flights until Tuesday at least. Thomas Cook has also now confirmed holiday cancellations in certain parts of Rhodes until July 31.

British tourists described scenes of turmoil as the five-day fire continues to rage, with power cuts causing chaos and an absence of information from travel agencies. One tourist said on social media: "If it wasn’t for Twitter I wouldn’t have a clue what is going on. Stranded in a high school. No reps, no luggage, no information."

In previous days the wildfire was confined to the island’s mountainous centre, but aided by winds, very high temperatures and dry conditions, it spread on Saturday towards the coast on the island’s central-eastern side. Fire service spokesman Yannis Artopios said on Saturday that more wildfires could break out as temperatures are set to reach 45C today.

Some airlines have been responding to passengers on Twitter, with their latest guidance listed below. This article will be updated as and when more airlines share statements on their websites or social media pages.

Are you from Bristol and currently in Rhodes? If it is safe to do so please email [email protected]

Last night Jet2 told a passenger: "We are aware of the fast-moving situation in Rhodes, and our in-resort teams are working to comply with the guidance of local authorities. The health, safety and well-being of our customers will always be our number one priority. We ask any customers in affected areas to follow the advice of the local authorities, or their hoteliers who will be acting under the advice of the authorities."

In an update this morning, it confirmed cancellations. A spokesperson told the Mirror : “We have cancelled all flights and holidays that are due to depart to Rhodes today (five flights in total). We will be contacting affected customers to update them, and to let them know that they will be provided with a full refund and the opportunity to rebook.

“We will fly those five aircraft to Rhodes with no customers onboard so that we can bring customers back to the UK on their scheduled flight.”

At 5am TUI responded to one passenger on Twitter saying: "We’re closely monitoring the wildfire situation in Rhodes & are aware of the hotels evacuated in the South of the island. Our resort teams are doing everything they can to support customers and we ask that they follow the advice of the local authorities and emergency services."

Late this morning it said in an update: "The situation in the Southern part of Rhodes remains volatile and challenging. Due to this and considering the impact on local communities being affected, TUI has decided to cancel all flights and booked holidays to Rhodes for departures up to and incl. Tue, 25 July."

An email sent to holidaymakers already in Rhodes added: "Due to some disruption with the local infrastructure, you may be experiencing some delays at the airport. The airport teams are working as quickly as possible to transfer our customers to their accommodation. We'd please ask for your patience and understanding at this time as there may be some delay in your airport transfer to your hotel.

"If you prefer to source your own transport to your hotel, you're able to do so and claim the cost back for this. Whilst a large number of our customers in Rhodes are continuing as normal with their holiday, we'd please remind all customers they should be following local advice at all times during their time away."

  • Thomas Cook

In a statement shared with PA on Saturday, a Thomas Cook spokesperson said: "We are monitoring closely the wildfires in Rhodes and are in touch with our customers who are on holiday there. Our teams are in regular contact with our holidaymakers on the island currently as well as those about to depart to discuss their options."

In a subsequent statement this afternoon, it confirmed it has cancelled all holidays to areas of Rhodes most affected by the wildfire until July 31. The travel agency announced it had been in touch will all customers due to travel to Kiotari and Lardos – the areas of the Greek island at most risk – to arrange “swift refunds”.

It has also offered full refunds to customers due to depart for other parts of the island on Sunday and Monday who wish to cancel.

British Airways

British Airways released a statement on Saturday evening to Sky news saying the company was "very concerned" about the situation. The statement added: "Customers currently in Rhodes who need to come home early can change their return flight free of charge. And anyone due to travel out from the UK in the next week can change their flight to a later date. We will of course keep the situation under review."

Airline Easyjet has come in for criticism after insisting on flying passengers out to Rhodes even as people face many hours of waits and traumatic evacuation journeys amid the major forest fires out there.

Easyjet took to Twitter to say: “We are currently operating as normal to Rhodes however we continue to closely monitor the situation. We advise customers travelling to and from Rhodes to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker.

“@easyJetholidays is currently working to comply with requests of the local authorities, and is in contact with customers in resort to support them. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority.

“Any customers who are booked to travel to or from Rhodes until 29 July can transfer for free to another date or can request a flight voucher for the value of their unused flights, by calling our Customer Services.”

In an updates statement, posted to Twitter at around 9pm tonight (July 23), EasyJet said it will be running two repatriation flights tomorrow from Rhodes to Gatwick in addition to its scheduled flights. There will be another repatriation flight on Tuesday.

The full statement said: "We know the situation for many currently in Rhodes is very difficult. The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our highest priority and we are doing all we can to assist customers in affected areas.

"We will be operating two repatriation flights tomorrow from Rhodes to Gatwick in addition to our scheduled flights. We will also operate a further repatriation flight on Tuesday.

"Any easyJet flight-only customers who have been evacuated from their hotel and are currently at the airport should contact easyJet’s airport staff. Any customers from affected areas wishing to travel back early can contact easyJet’s Customer Services team on our dedicated line for customers in Rhodes - 44 (0) 330 5515147 (open 7am-11pm BST or 9am-1am EEST)

"Other flight only customers due to travel to and from Rhodes over the coming days should continue to check the status of their flights at http://easyjet.com/en/flight-tracker… . If you are booked to travel to or from Rhodes before the 29th of July, our flights are still operating. However, if you would like to change your plans, then you will be able to transfer your flight to another date or can request a flight voucher for the value of your unused flights, by calling easyJet Customer Services.

"Our tour operator, easyJet holidays is currently working to comply with requests of the local authorities and is in contact with customers in resort to support them.

"easyJet holidays have sadly had to cancel easyJet holidays packages departing up to and including Tuesday 25 July, and customers will receive a full refund. We are proactively contacting easyJet holidays customers due to travel up to and including Saturday 29 July to confirm their options."

What is the official advice?

The Foreign Office travel advice to British travellers has been updated and now states: "Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece and there are a number of active wildfires including in Rhodes. If you are a British national affected by wildfires in Rhodes near Kiotari, Pefkoi, Lindos and the surrounding area, please follow the guidance from the emergency services. Call the Greek Emergency Services on 112 if you are in immediate danger.

"The Greek government has established a Crisis Management Unit to respond to the situation in Rhodes. They can be contacted on +30 210 368 1730. For 24/7 British consular assistance, call +4420 7008 5000.

"If you are planning to travel to Rhodes, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit is not impacted by the current wildfires."

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted: “The safety of British Nationals is our top priority. I encourage those in Rhodes, and those with family and friends there, to continue checking FCDO travel advice for updates.”

Jet2 and TUI have cancelled all scheduled flights and holidays to Rhodes in the coming days as wildfires continue to rage on the Greek island.

The travel and holiday package providers both confirmed the news on Sunday, with Jet2 saying that it will continue to fly planes out without passengers in order to bring customers back to the UK, while TUI said that all of its planned journeys up to and including Tuesday, July 25, will no longer go ahead, The Mirror reports .

The update comes as dozens of British tourists in Rhodes have had their holidays disrupted by the devastating fires that have broken out amid the scorching heatwave sweeping across Europe. A wildfire that has blazed for five days and counting on the island has led to hotels and beaches being evacuated, with holidaymakers describing the scenes as "terrifying".

A TUI spokesperson said: "The situation in the Southern part of Rhodes remains volatile and challenging. Due to this and considering the impact on local communities being affected, TUI has decided to cancel all flights and booked holidays to Rhodes for departures up to and including Tuesday, July 25."

The UK Foreign Office also updated its travel advice on Sunday for any Brits who have planned a holiday to Greece in the coming days. The new guidance reads: "Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece and there are a number of active wildfires including in Rhodes.

"If you are planning to travel to Rhodes, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit is not impacted by the current wildfires." A spokesperson for the Fire Service in Rhodes warned that the risk of further wildfires breaking out persists, with temperatures forecast to reach an unbearable 45C on the island on Sunday.

Holiday booked to Greece? Your rights amid Rhodes and Corfu fires

Jet2 and TUI have cancelled all flights to the Greek island and the Foreign Office has urged British travellers affected by the wildfires to follow guidance from Greek emergency services. But what should holidaymakers do if they have booked travel to affected areas?

Clouds of smoke from a forest fire rise to the sky

Wildfires on the Greek islands of Rhodes and Corfu are causing chaos for thousands of British holidaymakers.

Over the weekend, the Greek government said it had evacuated 19,000 people in the "largest-ever" wildfire evacuation in the country's history.

EasyJet repatriated 421 people back to the UK on two flights from Rhodes on Monday, with a third on Tuesday. This is in addition to nine scheduled flights to the island that are also taking place.

Jet2 had four repatriation flights scheduled for Monday evening - to Manchester, Bradford and Birmingham - with a total of 787 seats.

Fifty scheduled flights are going to take holidaymakers back from Rhodes this week, but each aircraft will leave the UK empty after all outbound flights and holidays were cancelled until Sunday.

So: what should holidaymakers do if they have booked to travel to either of the islands - or they're already there?

Largest-ever evacuation from Greece - latest on Rhodes wildfires

The situation in Rhodes

Jet2 cancelled all flights and holidays to Rhodes for this week, saying "we will be contacting affected customers with regards to their refund and rebooking options".

TUI also cancelled all outbound flights to the island until the end of Friday - with holidays for customers travelling to affected hotels cancelled for the rest of this week. Customers who have booked flights will get a full refund, while package holiday customers can either amend their booking for free or get their money back.

EasyJet said the situation for many in Rhodes is "very difficult". Flight-only customers who are booked before 29 July have been told that services are still operating, but they should check the flight's status before travelling. Customers have the option of transferring their flight to another date, or receiving a voucher for the value of their air fare.

EasyJet's package holidays have been cancelled until Tuesday 25 July, and customers will get a full refund. Those due to leave between now and Saturday are being "proactively contacted" to confirm their options.

British Airways is also operating flights as normal but "monitoring the situation in Rhodes very closely". People meant to fly this week can choose to travel at a later date if they want to - and customers who want to return to the UK early can change their booking free of charge.

Ryanair says its flights are running normally and are unaffected by the forest fires - with a statement giving no indication of whether customers can change their booking. Passengers who have lost their travel documents have been told that temporary documentation from Greek police will be accepted.

Thomas Cook has cancelled all holidays to areas of Rhodes most affected by the wildfire - such as Kiotari and Lardos - until 31 July. Those due to travel before then can receive a full refund, amend their departure dates, or arrange to go to an alternative destination.

For customers booked to go to Kiotari and Lardos from 1 August onwards, Thomas Cook says it is working closely with partners on the ground to understand the impact of the wildfires - and will be in touch with holidaymakers over the coming days with information and updates.

When it comes to Rhodes as a whole, Thomas Cook is offering a full refund for departures until the end of Wednesday - with alternative destinations and travel dates also available. For holidays to Rhodes from Thursday onwards, decisions are going to be made on a daily basis.

"If customers do want to cancel or amend their holiday for departures after Wednesday 26 July they can do so at their cost and we will not charge a fee but airlines may do so," it said.

How is Corfu being affected?

TUI has reassured customers due to travel to Corfu that its hotels and resorts are operating normally after a wildfire in a small area of the northeast was contained. However, people due to travel up to and including 30 July can amend their booking for free.

People already in Corfu and due to fly home with British Airways can "change their flight to come back earlier if they wish free of charge". Anyone flying with BA until Saturday can change to a later date for free.

Jet2 flights to Corfu are flying as normal from 26 July and beyond, with easyJet also running its usual service.

Ryanair says its flights to and from Corfu are continuing as normal.

What if I'm travelling in August?

Holidaymakers booked to go to the Greek islands in August are not being advised to change their plans for now.

Simon Calder, travel editor at the Independent, told Sky News: "At the moment the presumption is you will be able to go."

He added that with no official advice in place, cancelling means you will lose "all or some of your money", so travellers should wait until the fires have calmed and there is more clarity in the "coming days".

Can I get a refund or a cancellation?

If it's a package, the Package Travel Regulations say holidaymakers can cancel and receive a full refund "if unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances occur at the place of destination or its immediate vicinity which significantly affect the performance of the package or the carriage of passengers to the destination".

"If you have been notified that your holiday which is due to depart in the next few days has been cancelled, then your travel company will be able to discuss your options with you - that could be offering a full refund or they might be able to discuss an alternative holiday," said Emma Brennan, a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

Those seeking refunds for independent travel could have less luck.

"If you booked everything independently, if you booked a flight and that flight has now been cancelled, then they will need to provide a refund for that, then you would need to go through and speak to every element of your travel provider to understand what the terms and conditions are - what's the arrangement with the hotel or accommodation that you have booked, what's the refund policy, the same for any transfer or car hire," she said.

The fine print of holiday conditions will differ with each operator.

Anton Radchenko, the CEO of AirAdvisor, said travellers to Rhodes whose flights are cancelled less than two weeks before their departure date have the right to between £220 and £350 in cash compensation - unless the airline can book an alternative flight that arrives not too long afterwards. Package holiday travellers would be entitled to more.

However, compensation for delays does not apply if a passenger is on a free evacuation flight that they did not pay for.

Mr Radchenko had this advice for affected passengers eligible for a payout: "Airlines often initially try to offer compensation in the form of vouchers. We suggest to our clients that they refuse vouchers and avoid signing agreements accepting vouchers as a form of compensation, as airlines may later try to use this kind of documentation to reject your claim. Bear in mind that passenger regulations require airlines to pay compensation in cash."

What is the Foreign Office saying?

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has urged British travellers affected by the wildfires to follow guidance from Greek emergency services. A crisis management unit and phone hotline has been set up by them to help people in Rhodes.

It advises holidaymakers on any affected Greek island to contact their airline or holiday company who will be able to help them get back to the UK.

"If you are planning to travel to Rhodes, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit is not impacted by the current wildfires," it said.

It has stopped short of advising against travelling to Rhodes or Corfu - a move that would significantly help anyone seeking compensation.

Cabinet minister Michael Gove told Sky News on Tuesday that he is still planning to go on holiday to a Greek island experiencing wildfires next week - and official advice is that the region is "safe".

Am I covered by my travel insurance?

Whether holidaymakers are guaranteed compensation under their travel insurance policies hinges on if the UK government advises against travel to the area.

"The primary purpose of travel insurance is to cover the costs of emergency medical treatments or repatriation should the worst happen, which can run into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds," a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said.

"It can cover you if you need to cancel or cut short your holiday, but it's likely this will only be under limited circumstances, for example if you or a close family member fall ill, not because of a disinclination to travel.

"Insurance can cover you if advice from the government changes since you've booked your trip, and it's no longer considered safe to travel to the destination."

Instead, anyone concerned about travelling to the area should check with their travel provider and air carrier, the spokesperson added.

Some travel insurance policies may cover affected holidays under certain circumstances, so people are advised to check the scope of cover provided by their travel insurance.

TUI has issued a warning as the airline cancelled flights to Rhodes due to wildfires there. The fires raging across the Greek island have forced holidaymakers to evacuate the area.

TUI announced an important update on social media as it confirmed all the airline's flights to Rhodes have been cancelled up to and including July 25, Liverpool Echo reports . It also confirmed passengers set to depart on July 26 can amend their booking to another holiday free of charge.

It said: "Our teams are working hard with local authorities in Greece to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our customers currently on holiday in Rhodes and impacted by the wildfires.

"We'd like to reassure you that we're doing all we can to provide support and assistance. We appreciate how distressing and difficult it is for those who have been evacuated and ask they follow the advice of the local authorities, reps on the ground and hotel staff.

"For those due to travel to Rhodes we can confirm we have cancelled all outbound flights up to and including Tuesday and passengers due to travel on Wednesday can amend to another holiday free of charge. Those customers currently in Rhodes will return on their intended flight home.

"The safety of our customers and staff is of top priority and we will continue to keep a close eye as the situation develops and share more updates." Jet2 has followed a similar path as the airline has cancelled flights until and including July 30.

It said: "We believe this is the right thing to do for everyone, and we will be contacting affected customers with regards to their refund or rebooking options. We will fly those aircraft to Rhodes with no customers onboard, so that we can continue to bring customers back to the UK on their scheduled flights.

"We are keeping the situation under constant review, and we will continue to make decisions in the best interests of our customers."

Ryanair and easyjet confirmed flights to the Greek island will still operate as usual The British Embassy in Greece has offered assistance via a helpline open to British Nationals in Rhodes impacted by the wildfire.

It tweeted: "We are closely monitoring the wildfire in Rhodes. British nationals in Rhodes impacted by the wildfire can call +4420 7008 5000 for consular assistance."

TUI looks to restart Rhodes flights and holidays this week to parts of the Greek island

TUI is set to resume flights and holidays to Rhodes this week after the wildfires no longer appear to be running out of control on the Greek island

Tourists are evacuated from hotels during a wildfire on the Greek island of Rhodes on July 22, 2023.

  • 15:06, 27 Jul 2023

Most flights to the stricken island of Rhodes are to return this Saturday. Desperate hotel bosses and workers on the Greek island said they are “praying” everyone’s summer will be saved at the weekend. Winds and temperatures have now dropped below 40c and the Greece wildfires no longer appear to be running out-of-control. Resources are now being concentrated on the largest blaze in the south east of the island.

Yesterday workers were busy putting up new wooden telegraph poles after the fire ravaged the network. Electricity had been restored to many areas but some villages were still in the dark.

A TUI UK&I Spokesperson said: “Our teams in Rhodes have been working tirelessly to support customers impacted by the wildfires in south-eastern parts of the island. We’re continuing to monitor the situation and have made some changes to our holiday programme in the coming days. We’d like to reassure customers their health and safety is our top priority. Scheduled return flights from Rhodes to the UK will continue to operate as planned."

They said on: “Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th July – our holiday programme to the North of Rhodes, where hotels and resorts are fully operational, will resume. Any customers who would prefer to amend to another available holiday can do so or they can cancel with a full refund.”

"Up to and including Friday 11th August – Whilst a number of hotels in the South of the island are open, TUI is offering customers travelling on a package holiday to a hotel in the south of the island the option to rebook or amend their holiday, or cancel with a full refund. Our teams will be contacting these customers to discuss their preferred options, including anyone who’s booked on a non-TUI flight."

TUI had previously cancelled all outbound flights to Rhodes up to and including Friday 28 July, and has cancelled some holidays for customers travelling to impacted hotels up to and including Sunday 30 July. The travel giant was contacting affected customers and said that they would be offering full refunds and free amends.

It wasn't the only company to cancel flights. Jet2 also cancelled all flights and holidays due to depart to Rhodes up to and including Sunday 30 July, "to give customers assurance and to avoid putting further pressure on the island’s infrastructure".

However, not all airlines responded in the same way . For example, Ryanair continued to operate its flights 'as normal' saying that their routes were 'unaffected by the forest fires'. The airline did however say it would accept 'temporary travel documentation issued by the Greek Police', for example for Brits who were evacuated from hotels and left passports behind.
