Tesla mobile app update adds ‘Recent Trips,’ updated trip planner UI

Just like it does with its cars, Tesla regularly deploys software updates to its mobile app that include regular improvements and changes. In a recent update, Tesla has added a few new features, including the ability to view recent trips and an updated user interface for the Trip Planner function.

Tesla app update 4.26 has begun rolling out, featuring the addition of a “Recents” tab to the app’s location page, according to release notes shared by  Not a Tesla App . The update also includes improvements to the mobile trip planner interface that features smaller text and moves the Send to Car button to the bottom, which now displays the trip length and time. It also adds a Cancel button beneath the Send to Car button.

Other additions to the Tesla app with this update include the addition of a new circular animation on the Energy Chart that signifies what time it is on the chart. Additionally, the automaker added  app support for the Wall Connector  in recent weeks, letting you view charging history and make adjustments to your charging schedule. While it was already available, the update is just now appearing in Tesla’s release notes, according to  Not a Tesla App .

Tesla added the ability to  plan a road trip from your mobile device , dubbed “Trip Planner,” earlier this year. Other mobile app updates this year have hinted at the future addition of  Apple AirPlay , along with adding the  Drive on Sunshine  feature which lets users charge their Teslas with excess energy from their Tesla Powerwalls.

Planning a Tesla road trip is so much fun! But do you have to sit in the car to do it? Or can you access Tesla Maps on an iPhone? While you can't access Tesla Maps on your phone, you can easily send directions from your favorite maps app directly to your Tesla. You can also sync your car with your calendar so that your car can navigate to your appointments automatically.

How to Send a Destination to Tesla from iPhone

While Tesla has its own infotainment system and there are third-party Tesla road trip planner apps  such as A Better Route Planner (free) , my favorite way to navigate on a Tesla is to send a destination directly from my iPhone. I love this option because I can use my favorite maps app, even if it doesn't have EV trip planning features, such as built-in Supercharger stops. Once the destination has been sent, I can pick the best Tesla map route (including nearby Superchargers) on my Tesla's display. Here's how to send a location to your Tesla from your iPhone:

If you share a Tesla with someone and you are all signed into the same Tesla account, you can send a destination to the car even if you are miles away. When my husband is driving and wants to pick me up while I'm out, I can open Maps, tap on the blue dot that shows my location, and share it with him. That way, he can easily navigate to me without calling me to find out where I am, pulling over, and typing in the address himself.

If you've scheduled an appointment on your iPhone and synced your calendar to your Tesla, you won't have to enter your destination twice! Your Tesla will know where you're going next, and it will automatically navigate there. To enable this:

You can test it out by scheduling an upcoming event on your phone and inputting the address. If you do this while you are sitting in your Tesla, it may take a moment to sync and begin navigating there automatically. If it doesn't, just get out of the car, close the door, open it again, and the directions will show up without you having to enter them. Tesla Maps uses the Google Maps interface but takes traffic and route data from MapBox, but you can also use Tesla Waze. Waze is a popular navigation app that uses information from users to get accurate information on traffic, road closures, and more. Using Tesla Waze on your Tesla may be difficult because you have to use your Tesla browser, which is prone to crashing. Many users report Tesla Waze not working at the time of writing, but we're all hoping Tesla improves their browser soon to make this smoother.

Even though Tesla Waze has many benefits, I would recommend sticking to using the standard Tesla Maps for navigating because it is reliable and less distracting.

Now you can do it without even getting off your couch! Tesla has introduced a fantastic new feature, the Tesla Trip Planner, making it easier than ever to plan your trip – and all charging stops – directly from the Tesla app. Say goodbye to third-party apps and hello to seamless travel planning, tailored specifically for your Tesla.

How to Access the Tesla Trip Planner in the Tesla App

To access the Tesla Trip Planner, follow these simple steps:

• Open your Tesla app
• Scroll down and click on Location 
• Locate the Navigation Input Box (at the bottom)

Input Your Destination

Once you’ve accessed the Navigation Input Box, it’s time to enter your desired destination.  After inputting your destination, the app will automatically calculate your route, including all necessary charging stops and times, based on your Tesla’s current charge level.

Adjust Charge Levels Before Departure

If you know you’ll be charging your Tesla before embarking on your trip, you can adjust the battery percentage accordingly:

• Click on Set Battery Percentage , located under your Car Location
• Edit the percentage to your desired level e.g. 90%
• The trip planner will recalculate your route based on the updated charge level

Edit Your Starting Location

To edit your starting location, follow these steps:

• Click on the Edit button located next to Current Location
• Input your new starting location, e.g., “123 Main Street, Any Town”
• Input your destination 

The revised route will include updated charging stops, estimated energy levels upon arrival, and charging durations at each stop.

Send Your Route to Your Tesla

Once you’re satisfied with your planned route, simply click on Send to Car at the bottom of the screen. The route will automatically be sent to your Tesla and recalculated as needed, ensuring a seamless and stress-free road trip experience.

Plan for Multiple Destinations

If your road trip includes multiple destinations or stops, you can easily add them to your Tesla Trip Planner route using your vehicle’s touchscreen. Simply input each destination in the order you’d like to visit them, and the app will calculate the most efficient route, including necessary charging stops.

At this time, adding multiple stops can only be done from the touchscreen in your Tesla.  Hopefully Tesla will add this feature to the app soon.

Can I use Google Maps instead to plan my route?

While the Tesla Trip Planner offers a tailored experience for Tesla owners, some drivers may prefer using Google Maps to plan their trips. This popular navigation app can also be used to send your destination directly to your Tesla. Here’s how to do it:

How to Plan Your Route with Google Maps

• Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet
• Enter your destination in the search bar
• Click on Directions to calculate your route

Google Maps will display your route, estimated travel time, and alternate routes if available. Keep in mind that Google Maps does not automatically include Tesla Supercharger stops. You may need to manually search for and add charging stops along your route if needed.

Send Your Destination to Your Tesla from Google Maps

Once you’ve planned your route in Google Maps, you can easily send your destination to your Tesla:

• Click on the Share button located below your destination’s address
• Scroll to the right in the list of sharing options
• Click on the Tesla icon

Your destination will now be sent directly to your Tesla’s touchscreen, and you’ll be able to access the route via the in-car navigation system.

Using Google Maps is a great alternative for those who prefer its interface or need additional features not available in the Tesla Trip Planner. Keep in mind that Google Maps may not provide Tesla-specific charging information or real-time route adjustments based on your Tesla’s energy consumption. Tesla rolls out new navigation feature in smartphone app for smoother travel

Tesla made a minor improvement in its smartphone app that will allow for smoother navigation.

Tesla’s in-car navigation is incredibly useful for electric vehicle drivers as it not only tracks and plans a route like any other GPS system, but it plans out a trip and forecasts things like time spent at Superchargers , which is extremely logical for obvious reasons.

Owners are still looking for more improvements in Tesla’s app regarding navigation. Previous iterations of the GPS on the smartphone app had shown where the vehicle’s location and where the destination was, but not the route specifically. This had left drivers somewhat confused about where their drive would take them.

Tesla has now added this feature to the app, according to  Not a Tesla App , and more improvements could be on the way.

While route planning in the app and then sending it to your vehicle is possible, there is still no evidence that Tesla plans to implement Waypoints into the app, allowing drivers to plan each stop instead of the Point A to Point B method exclusively.

The new feature is an improvement from the October 2022 app update that allowed owners to see what the vehicle’s destination was and other traveling metrics, like ETA and what the battery charge would be when the car arrived at its final stop.

In November 2021, Tesla finally implemented a rollout of Waypoints , but the automaker refers to it as “Add Stop.” This gives owners the opportunity to plot out multiple destinations in a single trip. Ideal for road trips, other map applications utilize this to give drivers a more customized route along their travels.

Tesla continues to make improvements to its smartphone app. Most recently, the company added “Drive on Sunshine” as a feature , which allows owners to use excess energy generated by a solar system to charge their electric vehicle, making traveling as sustainable as possible.

Tesla App Launches Trip Planner, Finally

Tesla’s mobile app was updated to version 4.20.69 today (naturally!) and the release notes indicate a couple of new updates, but one major addition is trip planning from the app.

According to the release notes, Tesla says “Phone Key pairing no longer requires your Key Card to complete”. It’s unclear why they removed this step as it seemed like an added security measure for adding a phone key to your Tesla.

Also new is the ability to “schedule service for Tesla Insurance claims for US customers.

But the major addition spotted by @Tesla_App_iOS is the addition of in-app trip planning for U.S. and Canadian owners.

How to use trip planning from the Tesla app? Launch the app and tap the Location tap. Search for a destination and then tap it, then you’ll see trip planning like you do in the car, listing your car’s starting battery state of charge and how much energy you’ll end up with at your destination.

If Supercharging is required, you’ll also see recommended stops and how long you need to charge for. Tapping “send to car” will send the directions to your vehicle.

We also see a new image asset for Superchargers with Magic Docks , plus an animation for site locks at locations in China.

Previously, Tesla owners had to use third-party apps such as A Better Routeplanner to see an overview of battery usage for trips, but now you can get it right from the Tesla app.

And this is really valuable, because if at any point you get stuck in bad traffic, the amount of charge you use could come to more than you would otherwise expect.

When planning a trip anywhere, what could be better than using the world’s most thorough and up-to-date map app, Google Maps.

Google Maps covers more roads and alleyways than any other map out there. And it’s not only available through a web browser, you can also download it as an app.

And surprisingly, it’s not only available on Google or Android devices, you can get it on Apple iOS systems as well.

Better yet, to get charging stations highlighted along your intended route, all you have to do is tap ‘Add charging stop’ once you have entered your destination into the app, and Google Maps will then pull up EV charging stations along your route.

All you have to do at this point is select which charging stations to stop at. It really couldn’t get much easier to use

Then the app has the added bonus of providing you with voice directions as you drive on your route, so you can concentrate on keeping both eyes on the road ahead.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and that it had the most recent charging stations installed.

But then it goes on to be even more useful. You can use it to bring up nearby amenities at any of the stops along the way, so you can hit a hotel, store, restaurant, toilet, and so on.

You can even select a preferred charging station based around what amenities you need.

And that’s not all – it can also check the availability of the next charging station, and if it is already taken, it will offer you a different option on or around the intended route. Handy, hey?

You can use your personal account to save route settings and favorite stations and addresses.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and it came in really handy to be able to find the whereabouts of local amenities on our trip.

Tesla teases robotaxi ridehailing function in its app

T esla provided a sneak peek of its upcoming ridehailing mobile app in the company’s latest earnings report . The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has said that Tesla will unveil a long-gestating robotaxi in August .

The company revealed five screens from the forthcoming feature. The first screen shows a big button that says “Summon” with a lower message for the possible wait time. The next screen has a 3D map with a little virtual vehicle following a route to the waiting passenger. It looks a lot like the Uber app — but more Tesla-y.

While they wait, the passenger can set the vehicle’s climate to a preferred temperature. Other details, like wait time and the vehicle’s maximum passenger capacity, are also included. Once the vehicle arrives, the view shifts to a route to the destination, with other controls provided for music selection.

In all, it’s a pretty standard-looking ridehailing app. And there’s nothing that specifically references the robotic nature of the vehicle that’s doing all the driving.

Musk has long teased the possibility of a Tesla robotaxi, even showing off a completely covered vehicle during a 2023 event unveiling the company’s third Master Plan. Years earlier, he speculated that Tesla owners would be able to passively earn income from their autonomous cars by sending them out to pick up and drop off passengers.

The so-called “Tesla Network” was described in Musk’s Master Plan Part Deux . “You will also be able to add your car to the Tesla shared fleet just by tapping a button on the Tesla phone app,” he wrote, “and have it generate income for you while you’re at work or on vacation, significantly offsetting and at times potentially exceeding the monthly loan or lease cost.”

Since then, Musk’s many predictions about fully autonomous vehicles have failed to come true. Today, Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems require drivers to pay attention to the road and be ready to take control when needed. Drivers are also liable for any crashes that occur when the driver assist in engaged — and the company is in the midst of fighting several wrongful death lawsuits that have stemmed from fatal crashes.

Tesla’s biggest retail shareholder is voting against Elon Musk’s $55 billion package

Tesla’s biggest retail shareholder, Leo Koguan, confirmed that he is voting against Elon Musk’s $55 billion package and the re-election of two board members.

We first reported on Koguan in 2021 when the little-known investor became  the third largest individual shareholder in Tesla  behind Elon Musk and Larry Ellison.

The Indonesian-born Chinese American businessman is better known for founding SHI International Corp, a large private IT company that made him a billionaire. He is also involved in academia and philanthropy.

Koguan has previously described himself as an “Elon fanboy” (the featured image above is him and Musk) and believes in Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. He has been willing to put his money on it and by 2022,  he had invested more money in Tesla than Musk himself .

Of course, Musk invested early in Tesla, and therefore, he holds a bigger share with a smaller investment.

Koguan is the third largest individual shareholder in the company, but you could argue that he is the biggest Tesla investor as he invested more than anyone in the company: $3.5 billion.

In comparison, Musk’s net invesment in Tesla is now negative after he sold tens of billions of dollars worth of stocks to buy Twitter.

Koguan hasn’t sold. In fact, he recently bought more shares – bringing his total to over 27 million shares. This makes him an important player in the upcoming shareholders votes that Tesla’s board announced this week.

Tesla has asked investors to reinstate Elon Musk’s $55 billion CEO compensation package after it was invalidated by the board over governance issues at Tesla. The automaker is also seeking the re-election of Kimbal Musk, Elon’s brother, and James Murdock, a friend of Elon, to the board of directors.

We previously reported on Koguan being frustrated with those governance issues. He recently said that “ Tesla is a family business masquerading as a public company ” – in reference to Musk doing whatever he wants.

As the biggest retail shareholder in Tesla, Koguan says that he has been unable to get in touch with the board to communicate his concerns.

Following the release of Tesla’s proxy, Electrek asked Koguan how he plans to vote his more than 27 million Tesla shares, and the investor said that he plans to vote against Musk’s compensation package and against the re-election of Tesla’s two current board members.

Koguan is the largest Tesla investor to make his intention known, but as it is usually the case in shareholder votes, the institutional investors are expected to be the difference makers.

That said, Koguan’s Trsla position is bigger than some institutional shareholders, like T. Rowe Price.

Koguan, like many other shareholders, is frustrated with Tesla’s board for not enforcing any rule for Elon Musk, who is now a part-time CEO with clear conflicts of interest at Tesla.

While the vote is technically strictly about Musk’s 2018 CEO compensation plan, many shareholders are using it as a vote of confidence for the CEO and the board and it is obviously scaring the board since they launched a website to try to convince shareholders and the board already disclosed discussions with institutional shareholders.

I have held tight for 6 years with my investment. If Leo is voting "NO" then that should be a sign to Musk that shareholders have had enough with the under the big top antics. It's all about the business side of things as an investor and the sentiment here is that the focus should be on the company full time. If you want to be a part time CEO, then accept part-time pay. It is not personal, it is business.

Outside of X, it seems like the shareholder sentiment is clearly with Koguan, but Musk is really popular on the platform for obvious reasons. It will be interesting to see if the loud Tesla fans on X have the shares, or if it will even matter at all with institutional shareholders.

Tesla layoffs: Company plans to cut nearly 2,700 workers at Austin, Texas factory

Tesla is planning to lay off nearly 2,700 workers at its Austin, Texas factory in June, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice obtained by multiple outlets.

The layoff notice for 2,688 employees was posted Monday under the WARN Act , a U.S. labor law that requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days notification in advance of planned closings or mass layoffs to protect workers and their families, Reuters reported.

Tesla's notice says layoffs will start coming June 14, according to the Reuters. The company is currently based in Austin.

The layoffs come ahead of the company's earnings call scheduled for Tuesday , where a drop in year-over-year revenue is expected to be announced for the first time since 2020 amid layoffs, recalls, price cutting and a  fight over a potential $56 billion pay package for CEO Elon Musk.

Last week, the company recalled nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks over a defect with the accelerator causing it to get stuck when pressed, increasing the risk of crash. This covers  all the trucks Tesla  has sold since the vehicle reached market in November.

Monday's notice follows last week's news of layoffs at Tesla , when Musk announced in a memo obtained by  Electrek  and  CNBC that 10% of global roles will be cut, including more than 200 employees in Buffalo, New York. Some employees affected by the layoff have already been locked out of system access, according to Electrek.

How many people work for Tesla?

Tesla had over 127,000 employees in 2022, according to the  company's 2022 impact report . This number grew to 140,473 by December 2023, CNBC reported.
