Winter has finally arrived in Hong Kong, bringing with it merriment, British pop-punk legends and a jolly man in a red hat. For those looking to soak up the festive cheer, the city teems with Christmas markets and shows, festive menus and parties – enchanting the holiday season with a little bit of magic and holiday cheer.

Here are some of the best Hong Kong winter events to discover this December.

1. Clockenflap

Hong Kong’s biggest music festival is back for another round. Led by headliners Pulp, Joji and Yoasobi, a diverse line-up of acts will be taking over Central Harbourfront for a three-day spectacular between 1 and 3 December. You’ll find the city’s coolest kids crowded around stages dressed in their best festival finery with a beer in hand. Beyond the impressive roster, you’ll also want to check out the festival’s vibrant craft market and fuel up at delicious street food stalls.

2. Christmas markets in Hong Kong

Pick up a thoughtful gift from one of the city’s many Christmas markets, where local artisans and independent sellers congregate and peddle their unique treats and handmade gifts. Those with a sweet tooth should head to Swire’s White Christmas Street Fair at Taikoo Place between 1-3 December and 8-10 December; the entire market will be ‘Chocoland’-themed, with stalls filled with confections. Prestige Fairs , one of Hong Kong’s largest and longest running Christmas fairs, is set to return to the Conrad’s grand ballroom on 12 December with hundreds of international sellers – making it the ultimate spot to grab a gift.

Want something a little different? The summery heat of an Aussie Christmas has inspired Stanley Plaza’s upcoming market between 9 and 26 December. Named “ Chillmas by the Sea ”, it will feature over 150 stalls, with a helping hand from Australian organisations to make sure it’s as authentic as possible.

Festive displays in Hong Kong

3. Festive displays

Stroll along the city’s high streets and shopping malls while basking in the joyful atmosphere from all the glittering lights and Christmas displays – from outlandish feats of artistic engineering to fairytale escapes and everything in between. This year, Landmark Atrium transforms into a winter mountainscape, where adorable characters Emma the Mouse, Santa Paws and their animal friends have arrived to play. Kowloon Tong’s Festival Walk celebrates its 25th year anniversary since opening with a whimsical and thoughtful ode to sustainability, with a 15-metre-high Christmas tree that’s built from close to 10 tonnes of recycled materials. Head inside for a look-see, and be sure to check out the green Christmas market while you’re there.

4. Holiday feasting

The festive season is a favourite for gastronomes and gourmets for a reason: there’s simply so many delicious ways to celebrate. For those seeking Christmas flavours with a twist, how about a full roast turkey set with Vietnamese flair at Sheung Wan’s culinary newcomer Mâm Amis ? For those who love tradition, indulge in a dazzling Christmas dinner with all the trimmings at Rosewood Hong Kong’s Henry steakhouse or a three-course meal at  timeless landmark, The Peak Lookout , with the city’s rolling panorama laid out before you.

While you’re at it, don’t miss the participating restaurants in our inaugural Cathay Culinary Fest – simply dine at three of them from now till 31 December for a chance to earn 1,000.

5. The Nutcracker

The story of Clara, the dashing Nutcracker prince and the villainous Rat King is a Christmas staple across the world, and Hong Kong Ballet’s rendition is part of the holiday tradition here in Hong Kong. The talented dancers are yet again set to bring the classic to the stage from 15-30 December. This year, they’re putting the city’s stamp on the tale, as Clara journeys through a world filled with bauhinias, Hong Kong wildlife and even the occasional racing jockey.

AIA Carnival

6. AIA Carnival

Flying swings, bumper cars and gigantic circus tents are set to bring colour to Hong Kong’s skyline, as the AIA Carnival returns to Central Harbourfront this December. Over 26 rides, from the mild to the hair-raising, will fill the area, alongside buzzy sideshow games for you to impress (or embarrass) a loved one. Make a visit to the carnival’s World Circus tent a priority, as stunt motorcyclists, trapeze artists and gravity-defying acrobats from all over the globe will bring their acts to the big stage. The carnival will be running between 21 December and 25 February.

7. Family events in December

Looking for things to do in Hong Kong with your little ones this holiday season? There are options galore: A vibrant puppet-filled show brings the 2005 Dreamworks film Madagascar to life from 14-24 December, while meet-and-greets with Santa Claus himself will take place at Pacific Place’s enchanted Snowfall Hollow . The Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival also immerses visitors of all ages in the lesser known yet still enormously captivating stories of Hong Kong’s outlying eastern islands, with daily tours, craft workshops, busking and arts performances, all with free public entry until 14 January 2024.

Potterheads can experience the music of the franchise live on 12 December, when KITEC will host a screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix accompanied by the City Chamber Orchestra. Dedicated fans of the magical series should also hop on a ferry to Macao, as The Londoner throws open its doors to Harry Potter: The Exhibition from 15 December onwards, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the films and immersive journey into the wizarding world.

New Year's Eve in Hong Kong

8. New Year’s Eve celebrations

Send off 2023 in style as Hong Kong’s sky comes alight with vibrant pyrotechnics and sparkling displays as we ring in the new year. As for where you want to be when the final countdown starts, will you be vying for a spot along Victoria Harbour for the clearest view of the fireworks? A harbour cruise on the Aqua Luna in the thick of the action? A heaving dance floor behind an antiques shopfront at Central speakeasy Maggie Choo’s ? The Best Time to Visit Hong Kong

Part of planning a trip to Hong Kong is sussing out the best time to visit. For a sub-tropical city like Hong Kong, the “best time” falls between the autumn season in October and December, when the notorious humidity falls to all-year lows, skies are cloudless (but not oppressively sunny) and weather is relatively constant.

You can actually visit Hong Kong at all times of the year, but plenty of factors hang on the time you choose to visit: airfare and hotel room pricing, the holiday calendar, and the climate, which swings from nippy to downright sweltering throughout the year.

Before planning a visit to Hong Kong, consider the pros and cons of your travel schedule. Read on for more information on Hong Kong’s seasons, its holiday calendar and what to do in Hong Kong from month to month.

Weather in Hong Kong

Thanks to Hong Kong’s subtropical climate, locals experience temperate weather for most of the year. Weather extremes occur during the winter months of January and February, with occasional sub-zero temperatures; and the summer months of June to August , where the relentless sun and rising humidity are only occasionally interrupted by rain and typhoons (called tropical cyclones in Hong Kong).

The temperature in Hong Kong ranges from 55 F (13 C) lows in January to 88 F (31 C) highs in July. June brings the year’s highs in heat and humidity, turning a walk outdoors into a positively sweltering experience. Relative humidity reaches a high of 87 percent between June and August.

To deal with these climatic extremes, most buildings and transportation in Hong Kong enjoy all-hours air-conditioning. For more details about the month-to-month humidity levels in Hong Kong check out this article.

The summer months also coincide with tropical cyclone (typhoon) season from May to October, with September being particularly infested with these storms. Luckily, Hong Kong locals have had plenty of practice dealing with these storms, implementing a warning system that lets everyone in Hong Kong know what intensity to expect and how to hunker down. For more information, read about tropical cyclones in Hong Kong .

All that considered, autumn in Hong Kong is the best time to visit : the fall weather lets you escape these temperature extremes, going no higher than 75 F (24 C) and 74% relative humidity.

For a deep-dive into the weather in Hong Kong throughout the year, check out our explainers on Hong Kong weather by month , or Hong Kong weather by the season .

Low humidity, bright skies and moderate temperatures make fall the best time to visit Hong Kong. Sudden changes in weather are not likely in the autumn months; the rainy days come few and far between, with just 20-30 mm of rainfall throughout the season.

The humidity begins dropping during the fall months from 83% to 74%; combined with average temperatures of 75 F (24 C), the climate at this time will put a smile on any tourist’s face.

Events to check out:

  • Mid-Autumn Festival that commemorates the Chinese victory over Mongolian hordes.
  • National Day commemorating the birth of the People’s Republic of China (and the kick-off of Golden Week ) with a massive fireworks display over Victoria Harbor .

Expect no White Christmas in Hong Kong; the rare frost aside, temperatures rarely drop below zero in Hong Kong’s winter months, settling for averages of 63 F (17 C) throughout. With low rainfall averaging 30-40 mm and low humidity averaging about 74%, Hong Kong during the winter months can be a pleasant (if slightly nippy) experience.

  • Christmas in Hong Kong , a secular yet festive time that actually extends through the whole month of December.
  • Chinese New Year , a three-day celebration in Hong Kong that climaxes with a firework display over Victoria Harbour.

Sunny weather plus low humidity (at least at the outset) makes spring a fine time to visit Hong Kong. Temperatures start to crank up as the season progresses, with average maximums of 64 F (18 C) in March to 77 F (25 C) in May.

As spring progresses, the humidity starts to rise, too, as does the likelihood of rain. By May, expect half the days of the month to be drenched by spring showers.

  • The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens , the equivalent of the Superbowl for local rugby fanatics, taking place over three days in early April.
  • Ching Ming Festival, which signals the beginning of spring with families visiting ancestral graves and leaving offerings.
  • Tin Hau Festival, where hundreds of wildly-decorated fishing boats visit the Tin Hau temples around the territory to ask for luck in the coming year from the goddess of the sea.

The Hong Kong humidity in the summer months feel like a suffocating invisible blanket, combining with the steady sunshine to turn any clothing into sopping heaps by days’ end. The heat is only occasionally interrupted by short summer showers and the odd tropical cyclone.

Heat-shy tourists should avoid visiting during the summer months; the average maximums of 88 F (31 C) at the peak of summer in July will make a sweaty mess of any extended journey outside.

  • The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival pits eight-man dragon boats against each other on Victoria Harbour.
  • The Hungry Ghost Festival , when Hong Kong locals appease restless spirits with Chinese opera, food, and family get-togethers.

For a more complete run-down of major events throughout the year, read our list of month-by-month guide to the best Hong Kong festivals .

Crowds & School Holidays in Hong Kong

Thanks to the steady stream of tourists from mainland China, Hong Kong has no discernible “off-season;” there is no season when everything shuts down and prices plummet to basement-bargain level.

Not that there aren’t significant seasons for lower prices; your chances for discounted rates improve in the summer and winter months, when hotels and destinations tend to offer affordable packages.

There are two super-peak seasons for tourism in Hong Kong, during which hotel rates have been known to quadruple thanks to the influx of tourists from the mainland. If you want to avoid crowds and high prices, don’t visit during Hong Kong’s two “Golden Weeks”, clustered around Chinese New Year in January/February and National Day on October 1.

International Labor Day (May 1) sees a smaller influx of mainland tourists, though enough to affect prices and slots on bookings.

Conventions and trade fairs are a regular occurrence in business-friendly Hong Kong, particularly during the spring and autumn months. Depending on the size of the convention, they may cause room shortages in areas local to the event.

School holidays in Hong Kong generally coincide with significant cultural festivals like Christmas, Chinese New Year and Easter. Plan your trip around the following months and festivals to avoid school holidays:

  • Mid-October: 1 week half-holidays
  • December: 3-week Christmas break, lasting till after New Year
  • January/February: 1 week half-holidays, coinciding with Chinese New Year
  • April: 2-week Easter holidays
  • End of June to mid-August: 6-week summer vacation

The best time to visit Hong Kong falls between October and December, when the city's notorious humidity falls to its lowest, skies are cloudless, and temperatures are comfortable.

The coldest month in Hong Kong is January, with an average high temperature of 65 degrees F (18 degrees C) and an average low temperature of 58 degrees F (14 degrees C).

Hong Kong enjoys a sub-tropical climate, so, bring flip-flops, shorts, and tank tops if you're visiting in the summer. In the winter, pack long-sleeve shirts, jeans, and a jacket.

Why Go To Hong Kong

To outsiders, Hong Kong can raise a lot of questions: "Is it part of China or not?" "Is it one island or two?" "Do they speak English or Mandarin? Or both?" And foreigners have a good reason to ask them. This territory, made of multiple islands, returned to China's possession in 1997 after more than a hundred years of British occupation. Upon its reunification with China, Hong Kong added certain stipulations that provide a unique degree of autonomy. For instance, the official currency remains the Hong Kong dollar (HKD); English and Chinese are the official languages; and the tiny nation has an independent judiciary system. In short, China and Hong Kong observe a "one country, two systems" policy that can have many foreigners scratching their heads. But don't question it. Just accept it and enjoy everything this territory has to offer.

Hong Kong distinguishes itself from its Chinese brethren like  Shanghai  and  Beijing  with its vibrant, multifaceted culture and stunning cityscape. This British-Chinese hybrid astounds visitors with its striking juxtaposition of dense skyscrapers and lush landscapes. From sandy beaches to rugby pitches, there's more fresh air than most travelers suspect. And, of course, as a world-class metropolis, Hong Kong boasts numerous urban diversions, such as culinary hot spots and museums. After visiting Hong Kong, the only question you might be asking is: "Why didn't I get here sooner?"

After New Years, tourism picks up significantly, despite the lower temps, and leads to higher hotel prices and more crowds. Another sweet spot for affordable travel is the short spring. And while summer remains a popular time for tourists, the weather can be stiflingly hot and humid. To protect your wallet, avoid Chinese national holidays and large conventions, when hotel prices soar. Check out the Hong Kong Tourism Board's city calendar for updated information.

What You Need to Know

Not just a city Hong Kong is, in fact, a territory made of numerous islands and a peninsula. You'll spend most of your time on Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula and Lantau Island .

Get out of town While most people only picture Hong Kong as an urban destination, there are gorgeous seaside parks to explore. And with Hong Kong's sophisticated public transit system, you can get out of the city in no time.

HKTB is your new BFF HKTB stands for the Hong Kong Tourism Board , an invaluable resource for before and after you've arrived. Stop by the HKTB centers in the airport or in the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry concourse for free information and helpful tips.

How to Save Money in Hong Kong

Take the tram Public transportation is cheap, only costing HK$2.30  (less than $0.30 USD). Keep in mind, though, the trams only accept exact change and are only on Hong Kong Island.

Book your room early While Hong Kong's attractions and transportation are affordable, the hotel room rates can be exorbitant. Book early and don't be afraid to stay a little farther from downtown, as long as you're near an MRT station.

Head to the food court Sit-down meals can cost you a pretty penny in tourist areas, but you can usually find inexpensive options in nearby food courts.

Culture & Customs

Since its reunification in 1997, Hong Kong maintains a complex relationship with mother China. The former British colony continues to operate under a capitalist economy (despite China's communist ways), has its own currency (the Hong Kong Dollar), and creates its own laws. And due to Hong Kong's multicultural population and heritage, the official languages here are Chinese and English, not Mandarin. American travelers who have visited other Chinese cities like Beijing will notice a much stronger Western influence in the urban landscape, array of food choices, social practices (like greeting with a handshake) and more English speakers. These familiar aspects and the ease of getting around greatly reduce the culture shock that visitors usually experience upon entering China.

You should note that the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) is much weaker than the United States Dollar (USD). One HKD is equivalent to about $0.13 USD.

What to Eat

If there's one word to summarize Hong Kong's dining scene it's this: vast. Hong Kong boasts more than 12,000 restaurants throughout the city, making it easy to find a place to eat (and a really good one at that). Alongside foodie hubs like Paris, Tokyo and New York, Hong Kong has the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. But if your pockets aren't deep enough to treat yourself to a fine dining experience or two, you'll find the city's foodie scene caters to all kinds of budgets without skimping on quality.

If you're unsure where to begin, start with the basics. Unsurprisingly, Hong Kong's cuisine is heavily influenced by China, with popular dishes including dim sum and Chinese barbeque. However, what has made Hong Kong's dining scene stray from the mainland, and partly why it has become so unique, is its western influences. After World War II, western cuisine quickly became popular in Hong Kong, but was considered too pricey for the average citizen. Adjusting to fit the needs of the times, Hong Kong-style teahouses were born. A modern-day staple in the fabric of Hong Kong's culinary identity, the cha chaan teng's serve a variety of must-try dishes, including Chinese barbeque, stir-fries, congee and what's called "soy-sauce Western" – western dishes infused with soy sauce or other Chinese flavors. What's more, they're more likely to offer English menus than other dining establishments in the city.

Along with stir-fry, trying congee is essential if you want to have an authentic foodie experience in Hong Kong. Considered a favorite late night bite among locals, congee is rice porridge mixed with noodles and oftentimes vegetables and meat. Different regions around China have their own versions of congee, many of which have made their way to Hong Kong. Chinese barbeque is also a big must-try dish, with the heavily seasoned meats rumored to be nothing short of succulent. But fair warning to the faint of heart: full-bodied barbequed meats are hung on display in shop windows. Then there's the seafood, which is prepared in almost every fashion, from stir-fried to baked to deep-fried. But if you're looking for the quintessential Hong Kong taste, go with the steamed fish. It's a preferred method in Hong Kong for its simplicity: flavor of the fish comes first, seasoning is always second.

Street stalls are also a way to sample good, traditional Hong Kong delicacies without having to fork over too much coin. Dai pai dong, or open-air street stalls, typically serve stir-fries and provide the enthralling experience of dining in the middle of Hong Kong's contagious hustle and bustle. Travelers can also pick up a variety of tasty treats on the streets, including pineapple buns (which are named after the dough's resemblance to pineapple skin), egg tarts (rumored to originate from English custard cakes), put chai ko (sticky rice pudding) and so much more. While dai pai dong are easy to find, Temple Street is said to have some pretty knockout stalls. It's important to note, however, the distinction between food stalls and food carts. While food stalls are completely safe to eat at, food carts are unlicensed and have a reputation for serving unsanitary food. If you're not one for street eating, hopping into a food court will yield a similarly satisfying culinary experience. Food courts in Hong Kong don't carry the same negative stigma as they do in the states, so it's common for these fast food-like establishments to be packed with locals slurping their noodles. The biggest food court chains are Maxim's MX, Café de Coral and Fairwood.

Getting Around Hong Kong

The best way to get around Hong Kong is the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Ideally, you'll use a combination of the MTR and your own two feet to get places quickly and cheaply. If you take a bus or minibus, you run the risk of missing your intended destination as these two options are difficult for visitors who do not speak Cantonese, especially if you take a minibus. The ferries and the trams offer scenic routes, which you should take when you have time to absorb Hong Kong's bustling environment.

Most visitors arrive through Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), located just off Lantau Island . While many visitors simply hop in a taxi and zoom off to downtown, you can avoid the cab fare by using the MTR's high-speed Airport Express . This train takes only 24 minutes to reach the city, and a complimentary shuttle bus will pick up passengers at the Hong Kong and Kowloon stations and transport them to popular hotels nearby.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Unlike other areas of China, Hong Kong does not require visitors to obtain a tourist visa. You will, however, need a passport that is valid for at least one month beyond your intended return date, sufficient proof of a later departure (a return airline ticket will do) and adequate funds to support your visit. These requirements are noticeably less strict than those at other Chinese points of entry. If you venture into one of China's more restricted areas without the proper visa or the prescribed passport expiration date, you will be in violation of Chinese immigration laws. Check the U.S. Department of State's website before leaving for Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong skyline, whether viewed from the Star Ferry or Victoria Peak , is the main attraction in the city. It's so majestic, travelers strongly recommend visiting it during both the day and night.

Best time to visit Hong Kong by season

Winter  – from late-November to January – is considered the best time to visit Hong Kong since there are fewer surprises weather-wise. Later in the season, the sky is often cloudy and it can be a little windy and chilly. However, you can also expect intermittent pleasant breezes, plenty of sunshine, and comfortable manageable temperatures. In general, January and February are cloudier months and come with the occasional cold fronts.

Spring  – from February to April – offers fairly temperate conditions with occasional spikes in humidity. Fog and drizzle can cause some problems on high ground while air traffic and ferry services are occasionally disrupted because of reduced visibility.

Summer  – from May to August – is pleasantly warm. Expect some clouds even with the increase in sunshine. From the start of May, the air is occasionally thick and muggy – this is also a leading sign for typhoons! It is hot and humid in the daytime with occasional showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the mornings. Expect average daytime temperatures around 88º F, and at night, slightly lower temperatures around 79ºF with high humidity.

Autumn  – from September to November – is also among the better times to visit Hong Kong. While a typhoon can still pass in October, in November you will likely experience the first cool and windy days. By the end of the month, it can already be a little cold. Do bear in mind however that Hong Kong’s cold is still warm by European/western standards.

What to Pack for Hong Kong

As with most journeys abroad, the time of the year you arrive will determine what clothes you should pack. If you travel during the peak season in autumn and winter, expect warm weather. For this time of the year, it’s best to bring comfortable, lightweight and loose fitting cotton clothes. Long-sleeved items will also offer you protection from the sun. It’s always a great idea to carry a light jacket with you, especially at night. Even if you end up never using it, for that one out of ten times that you feel the chill, it could come in extremely handy! You may also need this in hotels or restaurants that use excessive air-conditioning – and many in Hong Kong do! While sightseeing, a hat and high-factor sun block can offer much needed protection against the hot sun. Lightweight cotton or linen T-shirts and polos, and knee-length shorts, are advisable and acceptable for visiting most sites including temples or pagodas. You will do a lot of walking in Hong Kong so light, comfortable and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Hong Kong?

Hong Kong doesn’t really have a high and low season in terms of tourism. The city hosts events and festivals throughout the year and unlike some other subtropical cities, it does have quite distinct seasons. So the best time to visit Hong Kong depends on your weather preferences and what you’re hoping to experience while you’re in Hong Kong.

Autumn (September to November)

Happy Valley Horseracing: Things to do in Causeway Bay

Although temperatures still regularly rise above 28°C, September officially marks the start of Autumn in HK. The seasonal shift is culturally marked by the Mid-Autumn festival (confusingly named, yes, but it’s based on the lunar calendar so the festival date changes each year) where families gather amid lanterns, fire dragon dances and moon cakes — worth checking out if your trip coincides. The HK horse races start up again in September and take place (almost) every Wednesday at the Happy Valley race course . A night at the ponies makes for an entertaining evening.

The weather is still hot, quite humid and unpredictable with typhoons and rainstorms frequently passing through one day and hot sunshine the next day.

October 1st marks National Day when an impressive fireworks display takes place over the harbour. The humidity starts to drop but the days are still considered hot by most, especially if you’re not used to heat. Some outdoor events start to kick off, such as the Freespace Jazz Fest , Marco Polo German Bierfest , Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival and the Grounds open air cinema. If you’re here near the end of October and you’re a fan of alcohol and/or costumes, then check out the Lan Kwai Fong Halloween street party for a good (but busy) night.

visit hong kong in december

Blue skies, sunshine, cool breezes and low humidity; November is probably the best time of year to visit HK in terms of temperature. It’s also one of the best times to truly appreciate the outdoors and make the most of the plethora of hiking trails , beaches, islands , country parks, waterfronts and campsites on offer. If you prefer watching somebody else do the walking, then check out the Hong Kong Open — the city’s oldest professional sporting event — which attracts some of the major champions of the golfing world.

Winter (December to February)

HK goes pretty nuts for Christmas with the decorations coming out almost as soon as Halloween has finished but there really is something quite special about seeing the harbour dressed in all its Christmas lights. The weather is more stable with temperatures sometimes dropping to 8 to 10°C but typically remaining in the double digits. It’s also a slightly quieter time of year as many people choose this time to travel outside of HK.

If you’re a live music fan, make sure you plan your trip to coincide with one of the best music events of the year; Clockenflap . Usually taking place at the start of the month, Clockenflap brings music, art, food, drink and people together for 3 days of family-friendly fun along the Central Harbourfront .

If shopping is your thing, stick around for the post Christmas sales that almost every store will be advertising.

January can actually get quite chilly, with temperatures sitting around 10 to 15°C but sometimes dropping into single digits. While you may scoff at us thinking 10°C is chilly, don’t forget homes and hotels are not insulated here and don’t have central heating so you really do feel it more.

New Year’s Eve in HK can be amazing or a pain, depending on your preferences. The full fireworks display has yet to return in all its glory post COVID (at the time of writing) but there is a wonderful light and smaller pyrotechnic show which is still worth viewing from one of the harbour waterfront spaces or from a rooftop bar.

Lan Kwai Fong turns into a massive street party and almost every bar and restaurant offers some sort of NYE’s package (make sure you book well in advance as these fill up fast). If crowds (or ramped up menu prices) aren’t what you’re after, why not check out one of HK’s many beaches or campsites and bring in the new year with a bonfire and a beer?

visit hong kong in december

Chinese New Year falls either in January or February, depending on the lunar calendar so the Christmas reds and greens quickly turn into lunar new year reds and golds. The whole city comes alive with festivities, flower markets , lion dances and lantern displays as it gets ready for the big day. It’s definitely a special time of year to visit and see HK at its most colourful. Plus, many people are busy with family events over the new year, so much of HK becomes a little quieter.

February also marks the start of the HK Arts Festival . Running from February to March, the festival has been bringing local and international art, dance, film, theatre and opera acts to the city for over 50 years.

Spring (March to May)

The weather starts to get a little worse around March as the creeping return of the humidity brings foggy and rainy days, which can be fleeting, or last for weeks. Temperatures are still pleasant though and typically range between 17-23°C.

The weather may be drab in March but the arts scene is far from it. Art month , as March is otherwise known, pumps out a number of events such as Art Central, Art Basel , HK Arts Festival and the HK International Film Festival .

Hong Kong Rugby Sevens at Hong Kong Stadium

As the weather continues to warm up, so do 200+ rugby players as they land in Hong Kong for one of the biggest sporting events in Asia; the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens . Held over 3 days, the tournament showcases some of the world’s best rugby to a rowdy audience made up of 30,000 fans and copious amounts of beer.

If you couldn’t care less about rugby, then make the most of the semi-cool temperatures and check out some of the city’s theme parks such as Ocean Park or Disneyland .

There are pretty much no more cool days in May with temperatures rising to the late twenties and humidity levels continuing to climb.

May also brings about both an overseas festival and a local cultural event. Le French May has run almost every year since 1993 and is one of the largest French arts festivals in Asia.

Over on Cheung Chau island, the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival takes place in either April or May and sees athletes climb their way to the top of 18 metre towers to ‘snatch’ buns from the top. The ritual was once based on making offerings to local deities in order to ward off an ancient plague. Today, the festival is an excellent showcase of local Chinese culture and ceremonies.

Summer (June to August)

Dragon boat racing off Stanley Beach

June may be the official start of summer in HK but high temperatures are already in full swing with an average of 28 to 30°C. Summer also means big rain in HK so whether it’s from sweat or from rain, you’re going to be damp if you come this time of year (pack extra shirts!). If warmer weather is what you enjoy, then be sure to check out the Dragon Boat Festival and the International Dragon Boat Races which take place on the festival day itself (dates vary each year depending on the lunar calendar).

July is the hottest month of the year in HK with minimum temperatures sitting at a steamy 28°C and regularly reaching 33°C. But, there are plenty of fun ways to cool down. Head to one of the many stunning beaches, check out some rock pools, take a dip in a fancy hotel pool with a view, or do what the locals do and party on a junk boat for the day. If you can’t handle the heat, stay inside for some retail therapy or check out a museum . July and August are also when the exhibitions and consumer fairs take place, such as the Ani-Com and Games , the HK Book Fair and the Food Expo .

People With Umbrellas Walking By The City Street Under The Rain. Looking Through The Window With Raindrops.

The heat continues into August but the rainy days become more frequent. Don’t expect the rain to cool you down though as these tropical rain storms bring more humidity and will drench you in seconds if you get caught out without an umbrella.

While these big rain storms can be quite impressive to witness and may not bother you, you should also note that If you are planning on visiting during the summer months, May to September is considered typhoon season . If a typhoon is on the horizon, pay attention to the HK Observatory (you can download the app) as they employ a ranking system of typhoon signals to indicate the threat of the incoming typhoon. If a signal is raised to a T8, T9 or T10, all businesses, schools and transportation systems must stop operating and you should remain indoors.

There is also a system for heavy rain consisting of amber, red and black warnings. A Black rainstorm warning will shut down all businesses and transportation systems in the city.

Travel to Hong Kong Is Back — Here's What It's Like to Visit and What to See and Do

After three years of near-total closure, Hong Kong is finally back on the tourist map. One travel reporter returns to the city to determine what’s changed — and what’s better than ever.

visit hong kong in december

Virgile Simon Bertrand/Courtesy of Herzog & de Meuron

It seemed almost too good to be true. After 34 months of hard quarantine rules and ever-shifting regulations that scared off all but the most determined travelers, Hong Kong announced in late 2022 that it would drop almost all COVID-19 restrictions. These days, only a self-administered rapid test is required of visitors coming from the U.S.

I jumped at the chance to be one of the first Americans to enter under the newly relaxed rules. Though I hadn’t been to Hong Kong since May 2019, this would be my 12th visit to the city — a place that my parents once called home. Much has changed, as a result of both the pandemic and recent political turmoil, including protests against government curbs on freedom of expression. Yet I still found much to enjoy, not least Hong Kong’s blend of Chinese and international cultural influences — a mix that, as a Chinese American, resonates particularly strongly for me.

“Now more than ever, we want to remind travelers what there is to love about our city — its rich and layered culture, its historic-meets-contemporary atmosphere,” says Hugo Montanari, managing director of the Rosewood Hong Kong .

Here’s how to make the most of a trip, whether it’s your first, or just your first in a while.

What’s New Around Town

Lok Cheng/Courtesy of M+, Hong Kong

Despite the difficulties of the past few years, Hong Kong has undergone a museum renaissance, particularly in the West Kowloon Cultural District, which sprawls along reclaimed land lining Victoria Harbour. The centerpiece is M+ , a self-described “global museum of visual culture,” which opened in November 2021. During my visit, I was impressed by several exhibits, including the permanent installation Conserving Neon Culture, which celebrates the electric signs that have illuminated Hong Kong for decades. Though a Yayoi Kusama show closed in mid-May, other intriguing options, like a survey of contemporary Chinese art, will run through the summer.

Meanwhile, the Peak Tram , a Hong Kong classic since it opened in 1888, has gotten a glow-up. In August 2022, new (if retro-looking) carriages increased capacity on the line by 75 percent and are wheelchair accessible. Unchanged is the lovely journey from Central to the top of Victoria Peak, where visitors can soak in sweeping views of the Hong Kong skyline.

Where to Stay Now

Courtesy of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

For much of the past three years, Hong Kong’s legendary hotels have hosted local staycationers rather than overseas visitors — but they’ve also taken time to rebuild and refresh. Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong , for example, redesigned its 399 rooms and suites and opened Argo, an ambitious art deco–ish bar with skyline views that went straight onto the 2022 World’s 50 Best list. “We have full confidence that Hong Kong is back on the global stage,” says hotel general manager Christian Poda.

Other big names, such as Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong and Regent Hong Kong, which was formerly the InterContinental, have also gone through major renovations. For its part, The Peninsula Hong Kong has introduced wellness programs, including classes and mindfulness retreats.

New properties on the scene include The St. Regis Hong Kong , which was Marriott’s 7,000th hotel when it opened in 2019. The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong is the brand’s first in the city — and its first-ever resort-style property, with a spa, a massive pool, and a water park.

Montanari, the Rosewood GM, is meanwhile eager to show off his hotel, which occupies 25 floors of a 65-story Kowloon tower overlooking the harbor. Though the property opened in 2019, this year will be the first opportunity many international guests will have to see it. “We expect a resurgence of international business and leisure travel,” the hotelier tells T+L. “And we’re looking forward to the return of cultural events such as Art Basel.”

The Scoop on Dining

Hecho/Courtesy of Sake Central

In addition to easing entry requirements, authorities in Hong Kong have eliminated the curfews and mask mandates that had kept a tight lid on dining out. “There’s an optimism in the air,” says Elliot Faber, a restaurateur who has lived in Hong Kong for more than a decade. “Now is a great time to visit, because you can feel the energy — but it’s not impossible to get a seat,” adds Faber, who’s part of the team at Sake Central. “I see things improving for the first time in a long time.”

Getting There Made Easier

In March, United Airlines resumed its daily nonstops from San Francisco, on Boeing 777s outfitted with 60 Polaris business-class seats. At the same time, Cathay Pacific continues to increase service between the city and the U.S., with capacity expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024. The carrier is also one of four working with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to give away 500,000 free flights to the city , including some seats reserved for North Americans. Sadly for those who didn’t jump at the offer, the free seats have already been snapped up, Cathay Pacific says, “due to popular demand.”

A version of this story first appeared in the May 2023 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline "Electric Once More.”
