Dodge Journey P0406:  EGR Sensor “A” → Circuit High

P0406 is a generic OBDII Diagnostic code.  It deals with the signal coming from the EGR system.  In this case, it means that the signal coming from the EGR system is higher than the specified range  Since it is a generic code, it has the same meaning for the Dodge Journey as it would any other vehicle.

The EGR system allows a certain amount of the Journey’s exhaust to re-enter the combustion chamber, which helps lower the emissions coming from your Journey’s exhaust.  When the EGR system has an issue, usually the only thing you’ll notice is the check engine light.

Since the EGR valve is part of the emissions system, there aren’t always symptoms associated with P0406 (other than the service engine soon light).

Almost all of the time, P0406 is going to be caused by wiring issues or a bad EGR Valve.  We’ll go over both of them in better detail directly below.

Bad EGR Valve

If you happen to have a good scan tool, you can actually use it to command the EGR valve to open.  If the EGR valve refuses to open it would be time to check the wiring harness for voltage at the plug that goes into the EGR.  If the voltage is OK, then replacing the EGR valve may be a good idea.  There’s plenty on testing this wiring in the next section.

Carbon , junk, and even ice can cause the EGR circuit to stick.  The most common cause of P0406 is the EGR valve.  But, blindly replacing it without testing it can be a waste of money.

If it does end up being the EGR valve, they are pretty affordable .  

Wiring Issues

A great place to start diagnosing P0406 in your Journey is going to be the wiring harness.  Being that the wiring harness that goes to the EGR valve is by the hot engine it has a higher propensity to fail than other wiring in the vehicle, it is often the problem.

Find the wiring harness where it starts at the EGR valve.  Does the plugin have any visible signs of damage?  If it doesn’t, go ahead and inspect the wiring harness for any damage.  You’ll be looking for frayed wiring.  Look close at any place that it may come into contact with the engine, frame, or anywhere that it takes a sharp turn.

To check the voltage at the harness, you’ll need a volt meter.  Check the voltage at the reference circuit.  If it’s at 5 volts, but the EGR Valve won’t open, that’s a pretty good indication that the EGR is bad.

Most of the time, when P0406 is thrown, it’ll be the EGR valve that is the cause.  It is still a good idea to test it and the wiring before buying a new one though.

OBDII code P0406 is defined as a vehicle having an issue with Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High.

A P0406 trouble code means that there is something wrong with the exhaust gas recirculation system (also known as ‘EGR’). This particular system is designed to lower combustion temperatures under certain conditions, thereby reducing NOx emissions.

This system is able to do this by recirculating inert exhaust gasses back into the cylinder to be burned with a mixture of air and fuel. What repairs can fix the code?

First, you need to perform a general check. Check the wire harness for obvious damage, like chafing and burns, as these both can cause circuit problems. Check for bent or broken pins, corrosion, or evidence of water entry. Repair as necessary and make sure your connectors are properly seated.

Perform an EGR Position Sensor Check. Most EGR position sensors are the three-pin type: reference voltage (Vref), ground, and signal. In the case of our Toyota EWD, these are VC, E2, and EGLS, respectively.

If the EGR valve is vacuum-actuated, you can bench-test the position sensor with a DMM and vacuum-pump. Disconnect the connector and measure across the entire circuit (VC-E2), and you should measure something like 6 kΩ (6,000 Ω). On the signal wire, measuring between VC and EGLS, you should measure somewhere between 0.1 kΩ and 5.5 kΩ (100 Ω and 5,500 Ω), depending on how much vacuum you apply to the actuator port.

If the EGR is electronically-actuated or you want to check output voltages, back probe the connector with your DMM and measure the voltage with KOEO (key on engine off). VC should measure somewhere between 4.5 V and 5.5 V and E2 should measure 0 V. ELGS should measure somewhere between 0.3 V and 4.2 V, which may vary, depending on the valve’s actual position. You can test the voltage output of vacuum-operated valves by varying how much vacuum you apply with the hand pump.

If you measure 5 V on E2, you most likely also measure 5 V on EGLS, which means you have an open circuit back to the ECM on the E2 ground circuit. Skip to Circuit Check to diagnose and repair.

If you measure 5 V on VC and EGLS, but 0 V on E2, you may have an internal or external short circuit. Disconnect the sensor and check for resistance between VC and EGLS on the sensor itself. If you show less than 100 Ω, then you have a short-circuited sensor. In that event, you need to replace it.

If you show between 100 Ω and 5,500 Ω, you may have a short circuit in the wire harness. You can skip to the circuit check to verify and repair it.

If you measure 0 V on E2 and over 4.5 V on EGLS, then you have a fault in the sensor itself. Replace the sensor.

Make sure to check the circuits. Disconnect the ECM and EGR position sensor and measure the resistance on the three wires. Each wire, VC, EGLS, and E2, should measure 0 Ω end to end. Additionally, there should be no connection between any of the three wires or to ground. You should measure at least 10 kΩ between VC, EGLS, E2, and body ground. Repair as necessary.

In the internal combustion engine, the ideal chemical reaction of combustion is as follows: oxygen (O 2 ) + fuel (HC) = carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) + water (H 2 O). Unfortunately, because engines are used over such a wide range of situations, ideal combustion often difficult to achieve. Outside of the lab, for example, there is a wide range of ambient temperature and humidity conditions, atmospheric pressure changes, as well as differing driver demands and even the state of the engine itself, all of which can lead to less-than-ideal combustion. Modern engines employ a number of strategies to achieve ideal combustion in ever-changing circumstances, using systems like variable valve timing and lift, variable ignition timing, direct fuel injection, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), to name a few.

The EGR system is designed to reduce the production of nitrogen oxides (NO x ), which are responsible for the formation of smog and acid rain (Nitric Acid – HNO 3 ), amongst other environmental and health hazards. Under ideal conditions, nitrogen (N 2 ) would normally not react with the oxygen during combustion, but abnormally-high combustion temperatures, typically over 2,400 °F, can enable N 2 reactions and the formation of NO x . The EGR system injects a small amount of spent exhaust gases, routed from the exhaust pipe, back into the intake, reducing the amount of O 2 available for combustion, therefore reducing combustion temperatures and the production of NO x .

The EGR system connects the exhaust to the intake via pipes and a valve. The EGR valve used to be vacuum-modulated, but many vehicles have switched over to electronic control by the engine control module (ECM). Depending on demand, the ECM commands the EGR to open and close, controlling the flow of exhaust gas into the intake. The ECM also uses sensors to monitor system function, such as the EGR Temperature or Flow Sensor and EGR Position sensor. If the ECM detects a problem in the EGR position sensor circuit, it will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

Depending on year, make, and model, DTC P0406 may have number of causes. Here are some of the most common.

  • Sensor Fault – Because it is constantly subjected to heat from the exhaust, internal electrical faults are a common occurrence. Replace the sensor, clear the code, keep driving.
  • Circuit Problem – Certain repair procedures may require disconnecting the EGR position sensor or interfering with its harness. Poor connections, poor routing, chafing, open and short circuits are par for the course. Repair as needed.
  • Dodge / Chrysler / Jeep / RAM / MOPAR – A number of models in this lineup have released TSBs (technical service bulletins) addressing DTC P0405 / P0406. Reprogramming the ECM fixes the problem. Check with your dealership to see if your vehicle is covered by any of these TSBs.

Aside from the MIL, you will most likely not notice any drivability problems associated with this particular EGR DTC. Still, because the ECM is now running in “limp-home mode,” you may notice a slight drop in performance and fuel economy.

Because this DTC describes a circuit problem, you’ll need a vehicle-specific EWD (electrical wiring diagram) and a DMM (digital multimeter) to diagnose it.

  • General Check – Check the wire harness for obvious damage, such as from chafing or burns, which may cause circuit problems. Also, check for bent or broken pins, corrosion, or evidence of water entry. Repair as necessary and make sure connectors are properly seated.
  • If the EGR valve is vacuum-actuated, you can bench-test the position sensor with a DMM and vacuum-pump. Disconnect the connector and measure across the entire circuit (VC-E2), and you should measure something like 6 kΩ (6,000 Ω). On the signal wire, measuring between VC and EGLS, you should measure somewhere between 0.1 kΩ and 5.5 kΩ (100 Ω and 5,500 Ω), depending on how much vacuum you apply to the actuator port.
  • If you measure 5 V on E2, you most likely also measure 5 V on EGLS, which means you have an open circuit back to the ECM on the E2 ground circuit. Skip to Circuit Check to diagnose and repair.
  • If you show less than 100 Ω, then you have a short circuited sensor. Replace it.
  • If you show between 100 Ω and 5,500 Ω, you may have a short circuit in the wire harness. Skip to Circuit Check to verify and repair.
  • If you measure 0 V on E2 and over 4.5 V on EGLS, then you have a fault in the sensor itself. Replace the sensor.
  • Circuit Check – Disconnect the ECM and EGR position sensor and measure resistance on the three wires. Each wire, VC, EGLS, and E2, should measure 0 Ω end to end. Additionally, there should be no connection between any of the three wires or to ground. You should measure at least 10 kΩ between VC, EGLS, E2, and body ground. Repair as necessary.

As far as I know, the EGR position sensor is integrated into the EGR valve. It’s not a serviceable part, so you’ll have to replace the whole valve assembly. The only difficulty here is that, because the EGR valve is constantly subjected to exhaust heat, the fittings may be stuck. Plenty of WD-40 and perhaps the application of heat and patience will go far to removing the EGR valve without any collateral damage. You can use a touch of anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the fitting when you install the new EGR valve.

Soon, Olga and her son will need to schedule medical exams in Moscow. Can anyone share current experiences with the Filatov or IOM clinics in Moscow?

Recently things seem OK there and you get the results the same day assuming your lady doesn't have to run around Moscow getting additional tests which is very unlikely. The Filatov clinic used to be hardly used due to limited hours, being hard to reach, and I think more expensive. But recently a third clinic. MOM, was taken off the approved list for some reason. It used to be one of the main clinics. So Filatov has become more used. I'd probably use IOM but I'm not up on recent experiences there and no one has posted much about medical experiences lately.

I hope those with recent interviews will share about the clinics they used.

You're right about MOM, excuse me. The other clinic was AO Meditsina. Yes, there is another clinic for a different city but I forget which one. I'm guessing most people use IOM due to same day results but maybe that is true for Filatov also. Of all the clinics, it seems Filatov is the least reported on clinic. Not much feedback.
I looked at prints from the embassy web site from early last year, and you are correct, AO Meditsina was also a clinic. I wonder why they were dropped? Mmmmmm...foreign intrigue!
I'd like to know also. I can share my wife used AO Meditsina and they had her running all over Moscow getting extra tests and lab work for no clear reason. When she returned the next day for results they had her do more tests. Ultimately they OKed her results but she almost missed her interview because of them. Maybe they had a racket going on to make more money? But I never heard of anyone else having this problem so I don't know. It was a very bad experience for my wife to say the least.

I can imagine the stress level for your wife, and also for you. This is why I thought to ask about the clinics. I'd like to reduce overall stress levels for Olga.

She asked me why a medical exam was required, and joking, I told her they are trying to keep out girls with large feet. Her foot size is a little larger than normal. I thought this was funny, but she was not really amused. Olga has a great sense of humor, and it was then that I realized just how stressed she was about the exam and interview.

There hasn't been anyone complaining about medical exams lately that I'm aware of...so all should go well. But you're wise to not take this too lightly either.

Meditsina was taken off the list back in October because the Embassy did not renew their certification. Word was that they would reapply some time this year. I'd email the Embassy and inquire; the Embassy isn't always that swift to update their website. They are the best with nice lobby with piano player; like at Bloomingdales!!!

From what I remember from when Alla and Leonid did their medicals last year (Alla got in under the wire at Meditsina) is that Filatov is only doing children (may have changed by now) and IOM was the last resort. Read some of the medical report that can be found around the October - December timeframe last year as there were a few reports from IOM (lots of walking from building to building but not too bad).

Olga is feeling some stress now, because the pace of activity has increased. She will be OK. I will definitely point her towards that forum.

Tell her to be careful about what she reads on these other forums. I know that Alla did a lot of "research" on these types of forums during our visa waiting process and she read a lot of "horrible movie" stories of other Russians' experiences while living in the US. I was always able to counter these stories and she did her own "verification of the facts" but she may be bombarded with negativism. If she wants/needs, I can have Alla get in contact with her (email or Skype or phone) if she wants to talk to someone live and "been through it".
