Hien My Le, '24, Sociology, KI Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grant, Summer 2023

Hien My Le

Thanks to the unparalleled financial support from Harvard’s centers, Korea Institute in particular, I was able to conduct fieldwork for my senior thesis this past summer. The generous funding from Korea Institute specifically enabled me to travel to Korea and base in Seoul for two months, having covered living expenses and the cost of site visits.

My tentative research question of how Vietnamese migrant divorcees in Korea navigate the dissolution of their marriage has propelled me towards the search of genuine conversations with those women. I had identified the research methodology of in-depth interviewing that required me to make multiple site visits to different migrant support centers ( 이주센터 ) and women migrants support centers ( 이주여성센터 ) to recruit potential participants. Although it was challenging at first to obtain contact information of women who belong to my targeted sample due to the confidential nature of local counseling work, I was fortunate to receive warm welcome and kind assistance from local social workers along the process. I learned from them the complexities of sustaining a multicultural family in an essentially homogenous society like that of Korea, and the persisting conflicts between the foreign wives and their families despite continued efforts on part of social workers to help ameliorate. I am especially grateful to Ms. Park at Korea Center for United Nations Human Rights Policy ( 사단법인 유엔인권정책센터 -KOCUN Seoul Office), who not only went to great lengths to provide me with relevant statistics and refer me to different sources of information, but also showed whole-hearted belief in my research and kindly encouraged to continue forward. Owing to Ms. Park’s resourcefulness and willingness to assist me with my project, I was able to connect with the staff of 사단법인 유엔인권정책센터 at Can Tho and Hai Phong offices, the two big cities in Vietnam that have a large number of local women having married into Korean families. These two offices act in close liaison with Seoul office to provide different kinds of support to Vietnamese women migrants who divorced and returned back to Vietnam, either by choice or otherwise. This network has supplemented me with insights into the legal and socio-economic complications that ensue following a divorce between a foreign woman and a Korean spouse, more often than not with the former left in a jeopardized and vulnerable position.

I also reached out to Vietnamese-run community organizations such as Dong Hanh ( 동행 ) that have been serving as reliable contact points for Vietnamese migrants who are subjected to unfairness and injustice while residing in Korea. Along with visits to local eateries owned by Vietnamese migrant women themselves, those encounters and conversations have given me a glimpse of the trials and tribulations of these women trying to establish a good life in a foreign land.

As of this moment, I have finished 15 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with Vietnamese women, who were kind enough to entrust their stories of love and loss, and of struggles and triumphs. I am troubled by the ordeal that they have been through, but at the same time inspired endlessly by their grit and infinite capacity for love.

These conversations are the backbone of my thesis project, and therefore the fieldwork in Korea is fundamental to its formulation. I would like to express my gratitude to Korea Institute again for giving me the opportunity to pursue my academic interests and grow as a person along the way.

Prairie Winds media program awarded grant

M ANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Three years ago, two teachers at Prairie Winds Middle School decided they wanted to come up with a better way for their students to demonstrate their understanding of science.

What they settled on was a student-run broadcast.

“With a focus on climate change, which is a really important topic, a dynamic way of teaching and demonstrating understanding is where the kids pretend they’re part of a newscast,” said Brett Riss.

The students used a program called WeVideo to cut together educational videos, as well as editing audio and making graphics.

But then their free trial of WeVideo ran out.

“We were stuck without the software,” said Riss.

But Consolidated Communications stepped in by awarding the program a grant.

The company started a program to fund schools to make sure that students get access to technological knowledge early in life.

“This is a program that our company founded just a few years ago to really cultivate creative learning using innovative technologies,” said Jennifer Spaude.

This grant will not only give the student broadcast permanent access to WeVideo - it will also give them the studio and high-level equipment they’ve been dreaming of.

But for Riss, it’s not just about the broadcast - it’s about helping his young students share an important message. This time on climate change.

“They interact with this complex issue in different ways, but honestly at the end of this project, they do kind of get it, and it’s fun to see those connections made, especially with a fun way of making a newscast,” said Riss.

Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table accepting applications for 2024 Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant

GNCRT (Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table) (logo)

The Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) is accepting applications for the 2024 Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant. These grants provide funds for newer library professionals with limited financial support to attend the upcoming 2024 ALA Annual Conference in San Diego, and recognize the value and expertise of comics librarianship. Applications for the grant are open now and the deadline to apply is April 1, 2024.

Through the GNCRT Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant two recipients will be selected to receive reimbursement of up to $3,000 toward their attendance at the upcoming 2024 ALA Annual Conference in San Diego. The funds may be used to reimburse the cost of conference registration, travel and hotel expenses and meals during the conference. Additionally, GNCRT will provide opportunities for the grant winners to participate in sessions and network with comics publishers and their fellow GNCRT members. Find eligibility information and application instructions online.

This year’s grants are supported through generous donations from Skybound Entertainment, which provided essential funds and support to establish the grant in 2023, and Oni Press. First introduced last year, the GNCRT Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant offers support for the professional development of library workers interested in expanding their knowledge and experience with comics collections and programming in libraries.

GNCRT Past-President Moni Barrette said: “We’re grateful for the continued support from Skybound and are thrilled to have Oni Press as a new contributor, as well. As funding for this grant continues to grow it allows GNCRT to offer professional development opportunities for library workers this year and next, as well as consider how we will be able to expand these grants to support even more recipients in the future.”

Current GNCRT President Robin Brenner added: “I was delighted to be able to meet last year's recipients and witness firsthand the impact attending ALA Annual had for both. We're so excited to be able to offer two more library workers the chance to expand their professional knowledge and comics network by attending this year's conference.”

"There are few institutions more crucial to the past, present and future of this country than libraries. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to support the ALA GNCRT in their tireless work to create new readers and spotlight diverse voices across America,” said Arune Singh, Vice President, Brand, Editorial at Skybound Entertainment. “It is important for us to show our support by increasing our financial contribution this year to ensure that even more deserving librarians can attend ALA Annual to discover the best in graphic novels, participate in programming and be celebrated for their contributions year-round to all communities.”

“Oni Press has been so fortunate to have the support of libraries across the country over the years. We’ve felt that support and community in so many big ways and being able to give back in this small way is something we’re proud and honored to do,” said Spencer Simpson, Vice President, Sales at Oni Press. “The work of libraries has never been more critical than it is at this moment and the support of the ALA GNCRT is invaluable to that work. We look forward to doing our part as publishers to be the best possible partners to librarians, creators, fans, and patrons.”

Grant applications are due April 1, 2024 and applicants must be members in good standing of both the American Library Association and the Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table. For more information on the GNCRT Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant including full eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply please visit the Comics Librarian Conference Travel Grant page online . How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow

Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read

travel grant ki

Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.

Exterior of St Basil's Cathedral at Red Square on a sunny autumn morning.

Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.

Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.

Zaryadye - a landscape and architectural park. Many people stroll over concrete walkways surrounding a rounded building in parkland.

Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.

The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.

A guide to shopping in Moscow

Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.

Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod  (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.

After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny  traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!

You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.

Young people sit on a bench looking at a large painting on the wall. It's by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov, called 'The appearance of Christ to the People' and is displayed in the Tretyakov gallery

Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots,   Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.

After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century;  New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions;  Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.

A blurred train travelling at speed through a station with a tiled wall and a station guide.

Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.

When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.

Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try  Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

Man arrested at Yellowstone for allegedly kicking bison while drunk

The 40-year-old Idaho man is banned from Yellowstone National Park while charges are pending

A 40-year-old man from Idaho was arrested at Yellowstone National Park this month after rangers received a report that he had harassed a herd of bison and kicked one of them in the leg.

Clarence Yoder of Idaho Falls is facing charges in federal court for the District of Wyoming for allegedly approaching and disturbing wildlife, being under the influence of alcohol in a park area, and disorderly conduct. Yoder suffered minor injuries in the encounter, and rangers took him to a nearby medical center for treatment before transporting him to Gallatin County Detention Center.

Mckenna Bass, 37, also of Idaho Falls, was arrested along with Yoder for allegedly driving under the influence, disturbing wildlife and failing to yield to an emergency light activation.

According to court documents, Yoder and Bass pleaded not guilty and were each released on a $3,500 bond. They are banned from Yellowstone while their cases are pending. Yoder has a status hearing scheduled for May 23. Bass’s is scheduled for July 2.

Violations at national parks related to wildlife, plants and natural or cultural features carry a maximum penalty of $5,000 and up to six months in prison.

Tourists harassing wildlife has long been a problem at national parks, with social media making incidents more visible. The National Park Service said this was the first time this year that a bison had injured a visitor at Yellowstone.

Jared Beaver, an assistant professor and wildlife management specialist at Montana State University, said wildlife harassment has started early this year.

“June and July is usually when it gets cranked up,” he said.

Of all the wildlife in Yellowstone, he said bison cause the great number of injuries to visitors . Last year, the park reported its first incident in July, when a bison gored a woman from Arizona. She was flown by helicopter to a medical center.

Beaver said the bigheaded bison , which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, can turn aggressive when they sense a threat in their personal space. He said almost all bison attacks have occurred when the victim was within 10 to 15 feet of the animal. The national park requires visitors to stay at least 75 feet away.

Bison exhibit clear signs of agitation. Beaver said they will snort, toss their head and may fake a charge. A flat tail is a relaxed bison. An extended tail aligned with its back means that it is on alert. When the tail stands straight up and resembles a question mark, an attack could be imminent.

“Be aware of your surroundings and make sure that you’re responding to that animal’s movement and giving it plenty of room,” he said. “All it takes is one wrong movement that might upset that animal.”

How we travel now: More people are taking booze-free trips — and airlines and hotels are taking note. Some couples are ditching the traditional honeymoon for a “buddymoon” with their pals. Interested? Here are the best tools for making a group trip work.

Bad behavior: Entitled tourists are running amok, defacing the Colosseum , getting rowdy in Bali and messing with wild animals in national parks. Some destinations are fighting back with public awareness campaigns — or just by telling out-of-control visitors to stay away .

Safety concerns: A door blew off an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jet, leaving passengers traumatized — but without serious injuries. The ordeal led to widespread flight cancellations after the jet was grounded, and some travelers have taken steps to avoid the plane in the future. The incident has also sparked a fresh discussion about whether it’s safe to fly with a baby on your lap .

In my weekly podcast list

Always enjoy your podcast. Very good banter between you both. I like the different perspectives you give on topics such as cards with no SUBs, cashing out MRs etc ( not that I would but I enjoy hearing about different situations to keep any open mind ). I keep checking when you have any available space in your Diamond group but it’s always full. This Benji person intrigues me too.

Informative

Enjoy listening to their podcast. They have many pearls of wisdom that I have absorbed. Thank you!

It’s only or the best

I think one of the easier more fun travel podcasts to listen to. I think they are class A in small talk. Keep it up friends!
