Trek 4100 Mountain Bike

About 18 years ago we bought a pair of Trek 4100 hardtail bikes. The image at the top of this page is taken from the 2013 Trek bikes catalog.

These were our first mountain bikes. Our intent was to get out in the open air and enjoy the trails.

We had no idea how to choose a mountain bike or what to look for, what’s important and what’s not so important.

These were entry level bikes, but they had an alloy frame and a very nice red and black paint scheme. The drivetrain was a basic Shimano 3X7 speed drivetrain, the 26″ tires were 1.95″wide and the front shock had as a 70mm travel.

About two years later I started to upgrade and replace all kind of bits and components on my bike. This first wave included the following:

  • a new rear wheel with a 9 speed Shimano freewheel
  • a new 9 speed Shimano Deore drivetrain - shifters, rear derailleur, chain, 11-34 cassette
  • a new set of Avid SD5 brake levers

This setup worked very well for me. The bike handled all trails and any ride I attempted. After a while i noticed my wheels are not true anymore, and I realized I need better wheels given my weight and riding style.

A pair of Sun Ringle 36H rims and a set of Shimano Deore wheel brackets became my net set of wheels. More or less bombproof wheels, they stayed true to this day.

About one year later I retired these bikes in favor of a full suspension bike.

For about 12-13 years my old Trek bike was rarely used. Nevertheless, whenever I upgraded or replaced a component on the bike I used day in day out, the old part found it’s way to the Trek.

About 2 years ago I finally switched to a 29er. I took the wheels, the RockShox Reba and a Shimano Deore crankset (originally installed on my Genesis touring bike) and installed them on the old Trek. And, I also replaced the v-brakes with the Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes that came off the touring bike as well. I used an A2Z frame adapter to mount the rear caliper, it works very well.

The second bike kept it’s original configuration for many years, only the handlebar was replaced with a new one after a bad crash. Eventually I did upgrade the drivetrain to a 3X9 setup and the wheels to a new set, hand built wheels with fantastic Ambrosio rims.

Today both bikes are fully functional, very well maintained and ready to hit the trails if needed.

This is how my Trek looks today:

4100 trek

Going back to 2013, this is the first year I joined a bunch of experienced riders in my first bike touring expedition. I did not have a touring bike at the time, so I used my old Trek. A rear panniers rack, slick road tires and a set of bags was all I needed.

It was a very good experience riding about 500km in 8 days, no major mechanical issues.

4100 trek

To summarize, in my own personal opinion, these Trek frames are fantastic. They are lightweight, climb very well and are very stable going downhill, comfortable riding position and most of all, very reliable. Real fun playing around and upgrading components on these bikes.

Decent Frame, Durable Tires, good v-brakes,

Drivetrain, fork, heavy single walled

Solid, decently lightweight frame - if you come accross the frame it makes for a fun upgrade project that won't let you down. You have to shop around, but I found that upgrading the parts was cheaper than purchasing a new Trek, Scott, Canondale or Specialized with similiar components. The original setup was adequate for an entry level bike, but will leave you unsatisfied if you truly enjoy riding trails. You'll be coveting the better bikes on the trails. 3 chilis for value and upgrade-ability.

great lightweight stiff agile frame. pretty good brakes. throw everything else away.

the components are absolutely horrible, until you get a job. then you can upgrade every part of the bike down to the brake cables. then it can turn out to be an awesome hardtail you can go on to win the MA superseries on. try it its fun.

this bike is an underestated frame that has so much potential its amazing. having replaced everything i got it down to about 23.5 lbs. i love it. its my only mtb and i race on it. god i love brand loyalty. post script: im giving it a low value rating because all i really use now is the frame.

iron horse maverick 1.2(another awesome frame wrapped in dukey parts), other iron horse, c-dale rush six.

Super light. Nice saddle.

Cheap components. The wheels are crap and will need to be trued. The brakes are horrible. Other than that, there's nothing really bad, but the componentry is just cheap.

This bike is great for road riding. The suspension is pretty stiff, so you don't lose a lot of power while riding in the city. It's super light and the tires are knobby enough that it's pretty good for light trails. If you're looking to get into mountain biking, though, grab a more expensive hardtail.

Weight, brakes, grips

saddle, stock tubes, deraileur, shocks

Good bike for the money. shocks are stiff, i went through the stock tubes in about 1 week with minimal trail riding, deraileur seems to operate only half the time, and the saddle gets uncomfortable after about 3 miles. im getting a new cannondale f5 in september. good bike for beginners or experimenting with different setups.

2000-1 Specialized Hardrock Comp (no disc brakes)

it frame is very strong

the front fork so i upgraded to a manitue stance

it was a pritty good bike overall and it is a good beginners bike.

Price,frame,bontrager components

Pedals,stem rises too much

While this may well be a economy bike it is a damn good value. Bike is fairly light with a well made frame. Shimano components shift solidly without hesitation. Brakes while generic work well. Tires are 2.0 but seem on the skinny side. overall this bike feels light and responsive. a good bike for a mix of street and trail though I would not do any serious jumps on it.Its aimed a a specific market and works great for that target group while providing for upgrades.

trek 800 sport, mongoose zero g

Damn nice strong, light frame. Components are alright not top of the line but they do get the job done.

PEDALS SUCK. Clipless is needed for sure.

Damn good bike for the money. Durable and strong when jumping and downhilling can really take a beating. THe compnents are not the best but are good for the money. I would recommend this to any begginer or semi intermediate rider. $Trek-Unit$ for life!

Trek 820 Specialized Rockhopper

Value. Has been reliable for the three months i have had it. A good frame with components you can upgrade. Black paintjob gives me a Johnny Cash feel.

Pedals needed immediate upgrading. Drivetrain is 7speed. Hubs are not upgradeable to disc.

My last bike was stolen and I wasn't really ready to lay down alot of money on a new one. I bought this, and I have been very happy. I ride three or four times a week, singletrack for over an hour for excercise. I weigh 220lbs and I haven't had any problems on this bike (the fork hasn't died on me, which I worried about at first).

Trek 830, Trek 820

Very light, responsive, solidly built

none depending on what you use it for

For an "average" biker like myself who likes to meander on and off road without jumping off of cliffs, bouncing off boulders, and just trying to stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors, this bike is a steal. It's fun to ride, feels very solid but comfortable on and off road, and looks great. It almost rides itself. Ten years ago I was an image conscious "bells and whistles" guy, but now that I've grown older and wiser I value something that simply serves its purpose well. This bike hits the spot.

Ironhorse bikes, several models

Great Frame, Durable Paint, Strong drivechain

Stock forks (I Upgraded), Ride Height, Tires, Derailur

This is a great Hardtail and is durable for any trail. I may not be a huge mountain biker, but any bike that holds to geter on the trail, i can ride. The suspention really needs to be changed out, it is actually a hazard to have suspension that stiff.

Trek 4100 information

I am going to look at a used Trek 4100 and the attached is the spec that they gave me on the bike. I do not know a lot about mountain bikes and will be using this for paved paths and city running around-- probably never off road. I was a bit concerned about the front fork and the gearing being less than desirable-- from what I am told. Any comments will be appreciated. Are any of these other components good? Apparently these bikes are more from outside the US. I don't want to buy junk. It is supposed to be in great condition. Also what is a good price.
