The blanket showed no signs of wear or tear after multiple uses and washes, but we do think it has the potential to get snagged or tear if faced with anything sharp.

While it was adequate for drives, it may not offer enough insulation for plane or train rides with less temperature control.

Our T+L team tested 19 travel blankets in everyday travel scenarios to assess comfort, ease of use, durability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, fabric choice, design features, warmth, and packability. We used the blankets in a variety of practical scenarios including traveling by plane, train, and car; during outdoor events; and even while lounging at home to determine comfort, functionality, versatility, and durability. 

We took notes on how heavy or lightweight the blankets felt, how warm or breathable they were, how large or compact they were, how easy it was to pack or fold them, and any unique features they had to make them more portable or comfortable. For the blankets that were machine-washable, we washed them at least once during the initial testing period to see how they held up and if the materials changed at all.

Our long-term plan includes testing for an additional six months to monitor each blanket’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios. As we continue to test the blankets in various real-world settings, we will continue to take notes on portability, practicality, and any wear and tear, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel blankets’ reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change.

On the other hand, if you're planning to use the blanket for camping or outdoor activities, prioritize warmth and durability. Specifically I'm wondering if they are providing a pillow so I don't have to bring my own on the overnight flight over. Anyone know?

I have never flown overnight (at night but no longer then 2 hours) and unless in first class they have never given me a pillow. Plus I always take my own cause they reuse them and I don't want to worry about slobber, just in case. You can get a nice travel pillow at Walmart for about $15.00 and useful at home as well when reading (twist & put behind back)

If you mean the travel kits you pay for, they have a blanket, inflatable pillow, eyeshade, headset and earplugs for $7. A good deal if you think they already charge you for just headsets.

These are yours to keep and are not reused.

we are flying in their Club class. I hadn't thought about the fact that the pillows would be re-used. Think I will bring my own! Thanks for the info.

In premium, they didn't charge for travel kits, unless they've just started doing that.

I don't think they charge in their club class, but didn't realize when I posted the OP was flying club. The ones in their kit are not used and are the inflatable kind, so don't know why they wouldn't be clean.

If you are flying club class, the kits are free and anything in them ie blankets can be taken away with you.

Our Review:

The EverSnug 2-in-1 travel blanket is a small, compact and ultralight travel blanket perfect for plane, train, bus and car travel. 

Our kids use this blanket in the car at home, but we also love using it on flights.

We love how soft, lush and cozy the blanket it. It kinda feels velvety and has a soft fuzzy feel.

It is made from a premium micro plush fabric. This polyester travel blanket is a great size, at 65 x 40 inches it making it a great size for traveling.

Andrzej loves pulling blankets up to his chin and as you can see this blanket is a great length for him to do just that!

The other great benefit of the EverSnug travel blanket’s size is that it folds down nice and compact, so it won’t take up too much room in if you pack it in your bag. 

We love that it comes with it own carry case. We typically pop the sleeve over the handle of our carry on luggage.

However, our kids typically travel with backpacks, so for them we simply use the backpack clip to clip it their backpack.

We prefer traveling with the blanket case pulled over the handle of carry-on luggage. If you click it to a backpack it is a bit bouncy with walking (the kids don't seem to mind, but it drives me mental).

Important to note is that the blanket is designed for one person only. I find that it is perfectly designed for plane seats (or train/bus seats) because the width is nice and narrow meaning it won't spill onto your neighbors seat. 

I do wish it was a bit wider - I do prefer the width of the Bluehills blanket (the next one on our list) more.

It’s also machine-washable and fast drying so easy to keep clean.

Not only does the EverSnug keep you warm as a blanket but when folded and in the carry case you can use it as a travel pillow to rest your head!

I wanted to point out that the name is a bit misleading as many people think they will be receiving both a blanket and a pillow, however, it is just one item that can be used as EITHER a blanket OR a pillow.

It is available in black, burgundy, grey, light pink, navy blue and teal. I absolutely love the light pink color but chose to go with navy blue as the light pink would show dirty marks on it pretty quickly.

It is the best  compact travel blanket for airplane use, but is also great for trains as well as cars.

2. BlueHills Premium Soft Travel Blanket Review

What We Love About It: We really love this blanket, it is long enough to pull up to the chin, it's great quality and a nice thickness.

What We Think Could Be Better :  On the photo it looks like it comes with a pillow but it is only a travel blanket, and once folded it can be used as a pillow.

The BlueHills Premium Soft Travel Blanket is a foldable travel blanket that is super soft and comfortable and will keep you warm on your travels no matter where you end up needing to use it.

To be honest, this blanket and the EverSnug one mentioned above are almost exactly the same.

The difference is that this blanket is a touch wider (3" wider) and the feel of the fabric is slightly less velvety in comparison to the one mentioned above.

As you can see the blanket is a nice length stretching from my toes - almost to my bottom lip. Great width too.

Again, just like the blanket we mentioned above, this one is made from a premium soft micro plush material.

This travel blanket will keep you warm and comfortable on planes, trains, busses or anywhere else you find yourself needing an extra layer of comfort and warmth. 

It is machine-washable so it is super easy to clean after it’s been used in all sorts of public places.

This travel blanket with pouch, backpack clip and hand luggage belt is super easy to take on your travels. 

Our favorite way to travel with this travel blanket is to pop the luggage belt over the handle of our carry-on luggage.

It is 60 x 43 inches when opened up so will provide plenty of coverage, but it folds up to a nice compact 11.5 x 10 inches.  

When it’s folded it can even be used as a pillow, or simply pop a jumper or similar in the case and zip it up, to have both a blanket and pillow.

It also only weighs 1.2 pounds so won’t eat into your precious luggage allowance nor will it take up much space in your luggage.

Another thing we love is that this blanket is longer (72") than any of the other blankets on our list (which are mostly around 60" in length). So if you are tall this is the blanket for you!

This blanket is great as it packs up smaller in comparison to the blankets mentioned above. It is also one of the lighter blankets from our list (12.43 ounces).

I am always freezing on flights so when I saw this blanket, I thought I would give it a try, especially based on the reviews I read.

I was not disappointed and just used it on four recent flights.

It’s easy to pack, is lightweight but warm, and I love the foot pockets and neck snap. It allows me to create a cocoon that keeps me nice and toasty!

Now let's be honest for a second. this is definitely NOT the World's best blanket. I really don't like the feel of the blanket - however it is pretty comparable to airplane blankets.

So if you don't mind the quality of a plane blanket, and your budget is low, then this blanket will work nicely for you.

For me though, I need my blanket to be nice and soft and luxurious in feel, so I'll stick with one of the other blankets from our list.

What We Love About It: It is a super comfy poncho. The quality is great too. When the plane is too hot I like using it for a pillow for my lower back.

What We Think Could Be Better : I feel like this blanket is   pretty chunky once it is in the carry case, so not for travelers for try to travel with carry-on only. It also doesn't cover your arms.

If comfort is something you take very seriously then make sure you check out the Kululu Some ZZZs 4 in 1 poncho style travel blanket.

Not only is this a super soft micro-plush fleece blanket and given its poncho style, this cozy blanket won’t slip off whilst you catch those all-important z’s whilst flying.  

I’m sure it’s happened to you before; you’ve managed to finally get off to sleep on that long-haul flight only to wake up because the blanket’s fallen on the ground and you’re freezing. 

No chance of that happening with this blanket!

There is a front pocket is really handy to pop your hands.

As you can see the blanket doesn't really cover your arms. I really love to have my arms covered as I tend to be cold on a plane.

However Andrzej loves to have his arms out, as his body temperature runs warmer.

He also doesn't typically sleep, so this makes it easy for him to work the remote for the entertainment or to play games on his phone to kill time. It is a great option for those who love to read too.

Important to note that this poncho does not have material on your back. As you can see in the photo on the right, the blanket has a great width.

It is such a soft and luxurious feel and I think that it provides the perfect amount of warmth as it is not too thick.

Another great feature of this blanket is the convenient carrying pouch that has a strap with a snap buckle allowing you to attach it to your suitcase which frees up your hands – a great feature to have while travelling.

Weighing 1.75 pounds and 45 x 62 inches in size, this warm travel blanket takes being comfortable on your travels to the next level.

It might not be the blanket for you if you are worried about space, but we love to pop the strap from the carry case over the handle of our carry-on so that it doesn't have to take up room inside the luggage.

The perfect option for those who like to have their hands free - mother's who need to tend to their babies or kids, travelers who love to read or play games etc.

9. Roamwild Kids Travel Blanket and Pillow for Kids   Review

What We Love About It: I find that the pillow (when provided with one) on a plane often falls off the armrest.   So this is brilliant to protect little heads from sleeping on the hard armrests.

What We Think Could Be Better :   We wish the penguin was thicker and more plush - it doesn't give much protection from the armrest, but our daughter still slept on it without any complaints.

What We Think Could Be Better :     It's tricky to refold and get into the bag when you have limited space on a plane.

11. Cloudz Travel Blanket Review

What We Love About It: I like that this   blanket is so light and I do like the cheaper price point of this blanket. It is also a great size!

What We Think Could Be Better : In my opinion this blanket is really just   a cut of fabric - I find that it is very similar in quality to economy blankets on planes (so not the best quality). 

• Weight: 0.55 Pounds 

The Cloudz Travel Blanket is not only one of the lightest travel blankets in these reviews, but it is also one of the cheapest.

This lightweight warm travel blanket is made from 100% polyester and is available in 7 different color options so each member of the family can have their own easily identifiable blanket.

It is machine washable so very easy to keep clean – which is very important with travel blankets.

When the blanket is opened up it measures 50 x 60 inches so will provide plenty of warmth and coverage. Many of the blankets on our list is only around 43" in width, so I love that this blanket is a bit wider.

Despite its great coverage, when it’s rolled up it measures a tiny 9 x 5 inches so it will take up hardly any space in your suitcase or travel backpack.

It also only weighs 8.8 ounces and fits into the included carry straps so it is easy to transport.

In my honest opinion, I'm not a big fan of the feel of the fabric. It really feels like felt. It is pretty thin. It reminds me of the blankets you get on planes.

If you’re just after one of the cheap travel blankets that is lightweight (and you don't mind the fact that it is not the best feel blanket) then the Cloudz travel blanket is worth considering.

12. Matador Pocket Blanket Review

What We Love About It: This pocket blanket folds so small that it ends up being similar to the size of my iPhone.

What We Think Could Be Better :   I wouldn't personally use this blanket for sleeping on a plane as it is not soft and cozy. It is great for outdoors travel though.

Why You Should Buy a Packable Travel Blanket?

No doubt you own a few different blankets at home already, so you’re probably wondering if you really need to purchase a blanket specifically for travel.

Plus, you don’t want to drag around a travel throw blanket with you if it’s not really necessary. 

A travel size blanket, opposed to your standard everyday blanket, is designed to be compact and lightweight so you can easily pop them in your backpack or suitcase.

If you tried putting a standard blanket in your backpack there would be no room for anything else!

But why bring a warm travel blanket with you at all on your travels?

Well here are a few reasons we think travel blankets are a great idea:

1. If you’re traveling via a budget airline, chances are you won’t be given a plane blanket during your flight.

Sure, you can usually buy a flight blanket onboard - but they cost a small fortune and you could have bought your own air travel blanket to keep forever at that price.

2. Sometimes flights or even buses get delayed and you find yourself stuck for hours in a cold depot, having an emergency travel blanket on hand keeps you warm whilst you have to wait.

3. If you stay in budget accommodation, sometimes they just don’t supply enough blankets, having your own small lightweight travel blanket on hand ensure you get a great night’s sleep.

Why We Started Traveling with Travel Blankets

Do you have time for a personal story? We wanted to share why we personally started to start traveling with our own travel blankets.

As family travel bloggers we travel a lot. On our last trip alone (we visited multiple countries over 3 months), we went on 13 flights. Some of which were budget overnight flights.

We quickly learnt over the years that some airport layovers can be freezing cold. I will never forget spending a 5-hour layover in Singapore overnight where I forgot to pack a jumper and for the life of me I couldn't get warm. It was a long (and cold) 5 hours!).

I would have done anything for a nice blanket so that I could get a few hours of sleep instead of shivering away.

Of course, they are perfect for budget flights, because budget flights don't provide blankets or pillows. 

But we also prefer our own blankets on full-service planes because I got sick of scratchy blankets and sometimes they didn't seem as clean as I wanted.

Not only can a travel blanket but helpful for cold airports, but it also makes a great pillow in warm ones.

We also often throw out our blankets on the floor, so that the kids can sleep on top of it (rather than the yucky airport floors) to get some sleep on layovers.

So yes they are incredibly helpful for layovers, planes, trains and more, but let's look at other places that we have come to love our blankets.

I absolutely love to snuggle up under a blanket on a couch whilst watching a movie with my husband and so few apartment rentals or hotels actually give you a throw blanket (and when you do find one it is often so dusty). So now I can with my own cozy blanket.

We have used our blanket whilst enjoying some wine and checking out the views from our patio on a cool night. So helpful when the temperature is cooler.

They are also great for spontaneous picnics whilst traveling, or just to pop down at the park and watch the kids play.

Not even to mention that when you have kids, travel blankets are just so useful for things like car trips.

We even use them whilst at home, because we share care with my ex-husband who lives 2 hours away and the kids love using the blankets for the trip (plus they pack up small so easy to store in the car).

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Small Travel Blanket

When it comes to buying a small lightweight blanket for travel, consider the following factors:

When it comes to fabric used to make travel blankets, there are generally three different materials used - polyester, fleece and down. 

Each have their own benefits when it comes to a small lightweight blanket.

Polyester: Polyester is the most common material used in travel blankets as it is reasonably inexpensive, lightweight and durable.

In some blankets the polyester is blended with other materials like nylon.

Fleece:  A fleece travel blanket is made with a type of polyester and is fairly common when it comes to a plush travel blanket.

This is my preferred type of fabric for a travel blanket, as it feels extra soft, plush and cozy.  

Down:   A packable down travel blanket tends to be more expensive as down has a fantastic warmth to weight ratio - basically it means they can be super lightweight and compact whilst still being super warm.

2. Comfort: 

Of course, the best travel blanket for plane or other travel is one that is going to keep you snuggly and warm. That’s the whole point of it right?

So, you want to look for a nap travel blanket that feels nice and soft to touch and isn’t going to be scratchy on your body.

A fluffy and soft travel blanket will help to ensure you not only stay warm but that you have a great night’s sleep.

It is also important to get one that is warm enough - too often I find that the blankets on the plane are just too thin and don't make me warm enough (often I have had to ask the flight attendant for an extra blanket just so I could be warm enough).

What size light travel blanket you purchase really depends on the size of the person you are purchasing it for.

For me, the perfect airplane blanket size is one that covers me from my feet right up to my neck.

However, you also don’t want a super large travel blanket that is big and bulky when folded up. The last thing you want (for those flying solo) is for your blanket to be so big that it ends up on your neighbors seat!

Bit blankets are also tricky to fold up in the small area of a plane.

So, whilst you want to ensure your travel wrap blanket covers you perfectly, you also want to ensure it’s compact enough that you can easily put it in the bottom of your backpack or suitcase without taking up much space.

For your convenience I’ve included the size of all the blankets in these reviews in the table above.

Similar to how compact your blanket it is, you also don’t want one too heavy that it’s going to eat into your luggage allowance.

This is really important as no doubt you will be wanting to take it onboard the aircraft with you and as you know airlines are getting really strict about the weight of your carry-on luggage.

The good news is, the best airplane blanket options are super light and weigh next to nothing.

For your convenience I’ve included the weight of all the blankets in these reviews in the table above.

4. Portability

Some travel blankets have some great ways for you to carry it with you.

Some you quite simply stuff in a sack, whilst others have built in carry bags and others have carabiners or straps that allow you to latch it onto your suitcase or backpack.

Carrying all your stuff around with you as you travel can be a real pain, especially if you’re traveling with kids - so I highly recommend you consider how you store and transport your travel blanket when deciding which one to buy.

5. Ease of Cleaning

I recommend you get one that is machine washable! And make sure you wash it before you fly (otherwise you might end up with lint all over your clothes).

Your travel blanket is going to be in all sorts of places. Airplanes, bus depots, maybe even on the floor if your flight is delayed overnight and you need to rest!

So, your blanket is going to get all sorts of dirty and you don’t want to have to send it off for dry cleaning all the time.

I’d also look for one that is quick drying as when you are traveling sometimes you don’t have the luxury of letting items dry for a full day.

In fact, sometimes you need to let items dry in your hotel room, so a blanket that is quick drying is super handy.

And lastly, whilst the soft light color blankets might be beautiful think about how quickly they will show the dirt from being used in not-so-clean locations, I recommend you get a dark colored blanket.

Answers to FAQ's:

Here is answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

1. Can you travel with a blanket on a plane?

Yes you can! You can check a travel blanket into your checked luggage or even carry it onto the plane with you.

When you carry a jacket or any other clothing item onto the plane they are considered to be personal items, and so are travel blankets.

They should not count as a carry-on item (like laptop bag, handbag and carry on suitcase).

Which is why we prefer the blankets that have a handle that can slip over the handle of a carry on suitcase, or has a backpack clip that you can clip to your backpack, rather than having to squeeze it into the suitcase.

We do recommend that you check with the airline you are traveling with as they may have their own guidelines and restrictions.

2. What size is a travel blanket?

In general travel blankets tend to be smaller, more compact and lightweight compared to traditional blankets that you may have at home.

The largest travel blanket that we have found is 72 x 42 inches providing maximum coverage.

The smallest travel blanket we have found is 33 x 23 inches so depending on what comfort you want for traveling you may find this too small.

At the end of the day, the size and weight of the blanket will be determined by the coverage you wish to have whilst traveling.

3. Are airline blankets washed?

It has been claimed that many airlines do not wash and disinfect the blankets and in some instances, unless there are clear visible stains, they are merely repackaged in plastic unwashed - the plastic just fools us into thinking that we are being offered a clean blanket.

A flight attendant from Southwest said that the blankets are only washed for the first flight of the day, after which they are simply refolded and repackaged. You can read more about that here.

Now, it is hard to know what is true but to ensure that you have a clean blanket that does not have any previous passengers' substances on, we recommend taking your own travel blanket.

4. What kind of blankets do airlines use?

Most airlines use the same type of blankets that are made from a spun polyester material called fleece. 

Compared to travel blankets that you can buy to take on a plane with you, these blankets do not provide much coverage and warmth as they are generally thin and small in size.

Plus, who knows where that blanket has been. Do you really want to pull a plane blanket up to your chin when the previous person potentially sneezed, coughed or farted on it? 

Verdict on Our Pick of the Best Travel Blankets

With so many choices, finding the best travel blanket for travel whether by air, car or train seems like an impossible task, but it all depends on your style, preference, needs, and budget.

If you want a travel blanket that gives more coverage when using, you may want to buy a blanket that is larger in size.

If you read my blog regularly I’m sure you will have noticed my love of Canada . It’s a fabulous country with many exciting cities, stunning landscapes and warm and welcoming people. I’ve flown there with several different airlines, many more than once and now have a firm favourite, both on price and service. Here are my Air Transat reviews and guides to the different ticket types.

This Montreal-based leisure airline flies to 63 destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Europe –  30 countries in all, specialising in holiday destinations.

Air Transat Reviews | Why Fly to Canada with Air Transat?

I’ve flown with Air Transat four times now, in both Economy and Club Class, and I have also used their Option Plus upgrade. Whichever class I’ve been in I have always found their flight attendants to be friendly and helpful, the flights leave and arrive punctually, and the onboard service and meals have been very good. What’s more, whenever I’ve searched online for the best flights to Canada  (and I’ve tried a few different flight search websites), Air Transat regularly comes up as the cheapest.

I hope the following Air Transat reviews will help you decide which option is best for you.

Air Transat Economy Class Review

With comfy, ergonomically designed Italian leather seats that are more spacious in seat width and legroom than other low-cost airlines, friendly flight attendants, excellent in-flight entertainment, reliability and a good food and drink service, Air Transat Economy Class almost has you thinking that you sat in an upgraded seat by mistake.

I’ve flown Economy Class a couple of times and found it extremely good. The only negative thing I could say was that on one flight, when we were sitting immediately behind Club Class, we were forgotten during a drinks service. A quick nod to the flight attendant and it was immediately corrected with their apologies, so no big deal!

In-flight entertainment

Depending on your flight this will be provided by a screen in the seat in front of you or via an app you download in advance onto your phone, iPad or Android device. I’ve tried both and found them excellent – I do love being able to choose which films I watch (and they have a great selection) and being able to pause a film whenever you wish is so convenient. Games, music, and TV series are also available.

Bistro Meals

From 1 st May 2018, transatlantic flights include a two-course meal with a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink. For example, chicken breast in a garlic and ginger sauce, served with jasmine rice with red peppers and parsley followed by a small dessert. Chef’s Menu by Daniel Vézina

Included in Club Class but also available to economy passengers for $25, Air Transat has teamed with the renowned Quebec chef, Daniel Vézina, to bring you a selection of gourmet meals on its flights, inspired by his signature recipes. An appetiser and main course are served with a glass of wine and are followed by cheese, crackers and a dessert. The main course shown below was excellent – pulled beef shepherd’s pie with yellow potato, goat cheese and leek purée, sprinkled with toasted bread crumbs and Swiss cheese.

If you are travelling with children aged between 2 and 11 years old then do check out the Air Transat Kids Club . It’s free and offers loads of benefits, not just for the children.

Air Transat Club Class Review

Who doesn’t like to turn left and head for the posh seats when they get on a plane? It’s a rare treat for me that I thoroughly enjoy.  If you are flying for a special occasion, be that a honeymoon, a birthday, an anniversary or simply an indulgent getaway with the girls, Club Class is the way to travel in style and my Air Transat reviews wouldn’t be complete without discussing the merits of this luxury option.

Perks include two pieces of checked luggage and priority service at the airport. Onboard, we had very comfy wide seats with plenty of legroom, a welcome cocktail, a blanket and slippers and a comfort kit with a leather wash bag containing toothpaste, toothbrush, hand and body lotion and an eye mask. Depending on your flight, you may also get the use of an iPad or a screen in the seat in front of you, to watch the in-flight entertainment, not to mention a gourmet meal from the Chef’s Menu by Daniel Vézina, plus complimentary drinks and snacks. I particularly loved the coffee served with whipped cream and a choice of spirit, including Baileys, Brandy or Whisky – a lovely surprise.

What stands out most in my mind from flying Club Class was the quality and amount of food and drinks on offer, the excellent flight attendants and the attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble. The seats were extremely comfortable with a number of handy cubbyholes for storing things that you want readily to hand, charging points and bottles of water. All the little extras that are included are so useful. They’ve even thought of hand and body cream to help you fight the drying atmosphere inside any plane.

There are sites that say they’ll apply for you, but they are completely unnecessary, and you’ll end up paying more than you need to.

Admittedly I’d never heard of them until now – they sound like an ideal alternative to the extremes of low-cost carriers and the pricey airlines. I’ll bear them in mind for my next trip to Canada – which can’t happen too soon!

Can I come too, please! I’m longing to go back to British Columbia to go whale watching with a company called Kingfisher who go out in kayaks. Sounds fabulous and a low impact experience.

I was really impressed with Air Transat when we went out to Canada last year – especially for the price. Club Class sounds like a great idea for my next trip though to get that extra level of service and food without having to pay a fortune.

I was really impressed with all the different classes. If Air Transat can offer this quality and value, why can’t other budget airlines even come close to matching it?!

Miracle in the azores: how air transat flight 236 glided to safety after running out of fuel.

The Azores Glider was one of the most dramatic moments in aviation history and the longest glide of its kind.

• The Azores Glider flew with a catastrophic fuel leak due to maintenance error and made an emergency landing.
• Passengers and crew survived with no serious injuries, but some developed PTSD due to the incident.
• Captain Robert Piche managed the landing skillfully despite later receiving partial responsibility.

On 24 August 2001, Air Transat Flight 236 (aka the "Azores Glider") ran out of fuel over the Atlantic bound for Portugal. Improper maintenance caused a catastrophic fuel leak, causing both engines to flame out. Fortunately, the captain, Robert Piche, was an expired pilot and managed to glide the dead Airbus A330 to an emergency landing in the Portuguese Azores (in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean).

The Azores Glider earned its place as one of the most notable commercial flights to have glided after losing power . However, Air Transat Flight 236 was not the first commercial Canadian flight to run out of fuel in midair. In 1983, Air Canada Flight 143 (a Boeing 767 dubbed the Gimli Glider) ran out of fuel as it flew from Montreal to Edmonton in Canada.

Gliding over the Atlantic

According to the FAA , 3 hours and 46 minutes into the flight from Canada to Portugal, Air Transat Flight 236 developed a fuel leak in the right engine. However, the crew did not detect the leak and believed the aircraft had faulty sensors. It wasn't for another hour and 7 minutes after the leak began that the pilots diverted the flight to an emergency landing at Lajes Airport in the Azores . The right engine flamed out when the aircraft was still 150 nautical miles from the airport. Flight 143 continued to fly on its remaining engine until it, too, flamed out around 65 nautical miles from the airport at an altitude of around 34,500 feet.

At this point, it was far from certain the dead aircraft could make it to the airport. The crew informed ground control that ditching was a possibility. However, ditching at night (the pilots would not be able to see the water) in the large swells of the Atlantic Ocean was not a viable option. Had the aircraft ditched, the fuselage would likely have broken up, and those onboard would likely have died from the impact, drowning, and hyperthermia.

Fortunately, the flight enjoyed good visual weather conditions as it descended to Lajes Airport. The aircraft landed on runway 33 at 6:45 UTC and then performed an emergency evacuation during which 16 passengers and two cabin crew received light injuries.

After touching down, not only had all 293 passengers and 13 crew been saved, but they had also broken the world record. Having glided for almost 75 miles, the Azores Glider remains the longest passenger aircraft glide without engines.

Subsequent investigations found the leak resulted from a fuel line cracking due to interference between the fuel line and a hydraulic line on the right engine. This was caused by the wrong part being fitted. In flight, chaffing between the lines only millimeters apart eventually ruptured the fuel line.

Aftermath for passengers and aircraft.

The A330 (registered as N271AD and previously registered as C-GITS) suffered limited structural damage to the fuselage and the main landing gear but was repaired and returned to service. During the pandemic, it was stored at Marana Pinal Airpark (KMZJ) and doesn't appear to have returned to service. According to information provided by Planespotters.net , it is now owned by the leasing company AerCap and is stored.

It is normally said that no one was seriously injured in the incident. While that is true in terms of physical injury, some passengers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In 2015, The Canadian Press reported some of the 306 passengers and crew on board the Azores Glider developed PTSD. Brain images of eight of the passengers nine years after the incident revealed that their areas of the brain related to the event "lit up" with harrowing memories.

The powerless gliding may have only lasted 30 minutes, but that was enough for it to be a life-changing experience. Being told to don life vests for possible ditching and believing they were about to die was an experience some passengers and cabin crew may not fully recover from.

''When you don't have that other engine, sooner or later you're going to go down, you know. That's just about it. You don't have time to think about anything else than taking care of the safety of the passengers. You do as you've been taught.'' - Captain Piche

Robert Piche (now 71) enjoyed a rather colorful career as a pilot. In his younger years, he worked for Quebecair before being laid off. He then worked odd jobs smuggling marijuana to the United States by plane. But in 1983, he was discovered while flying smuggled marijuana from Jamaica into the US.

He served the first 16 months of a 5-year sentence in prison before being released in 1985 and pardoned in 2000. In 1995, he was hired by Air Transat (then aged 43) and was 48 when he flew the Azores Glider. He continued to fly after the incident before retiring in 2017.

At first, Piche was praised for his calm handling of the emergency, but Piche and his co-pilot, Mr. DeJager, were later given partial responsibility for the incident. The New York Times reported in 2002,

" One of the most serious questions is whether the captain magnified the crisis by transferring fuel from the working engine to the failing engine, not realizing that it was leaking. "

Despite this, the Air Line Pilots Association awarded him the Superior Airmanship Award for skillfully landing the dead-stick Airbus A330.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
