"I've been going on monthly tours for over a year now. Every tour is different, interesting, uplifting and thought-provoking. Tal and Maya are both great guides, the groups are a good-size (not too large) and the art we see is always top-notch. It's been one of the highlights of my life in NYC, and so I highly recommend taking a tour with them!"

Private Tours, Group Classes & Advising

Art Tours, Classes & Advising

Lauren A Kaplan Art Tours provides three distinct services:

Private Tours

I craft in-person, customizable tours of New York’s art and architecture. Whether you are visiting town and want to see the Metropolitan Museum’s greatest hits, or are a New York native seeking a deep understanding of the season’s most talked-about exhibition, I will create the right experience for you. I love working with groups of friends, colleagues, and families too!

Group Classes

I lead virtual and in-person classes covering special exhibitions and relevant themes. All classes are 90 minutes long. Virtual classes meet on zoom, and in-person classes meet at museums and galleries around the city. All classes are packed with information, but they are also interactive and include lots of time for discussion.

Art Advisory

I provide advising for individuals hoping to start or expand an art collection. I will work with you to figure out your taste and budget, and I am always thrilled to bring more art into your daily life.

In all cases, my goal is to blend education with wit and enthusiasm, ensuring a truly memorable experience. In the end, you will not only gain tangible information, but will also become a more savvy consumer of culture.

See what people are saying about my art tours:

“Having a person who is steeped in the art world provides a window to another dimension that is much deeper than what lies on the surface.”

“Lauren is top of her game. Knowledgeable, fun, friendly — a total trifecta. You won’t find anyone better”

“I have now taken 3 trips through different worlds of art with Lauren including the Met, the Whitney and a Chelsea gallery tour. Each was a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable time”

A Recent Interview

I recently sat down with Mark Nimar, of The West Side Spirit, to discuss some of the ways my practice has evolved throughout COVID and how becoming a mom has changed my approach to teaching and art history. Read more here !

In December of 2016, I was interviewed by Michael Shaw, an LA-based artist, for his podcast,  The Conversation.  You can hear the interview here . At the time, we talked about my pedagogical approach to teaching art history, giving tours to different audiences—small and large, young and old—and what I love (and hate) about living in Brooklyn and working mostly on the Upper East Side. I just re-listened as a means of reflecting upon how my work has changed over the past six years. The answer is: a lot.

On Kawara: Killer (and Marker) of Time

On Kawara’s Guggenheim retrospective was a surprising revelation, far more powerful–and poignant–than I’d previously expected. The artist, who died last year, was born in Japan on December 24, 1932, forcing him to experience the horrific bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when he was a teenager. Though he’d initially wanted to be a scientist, witnessing the dangerous side of scientific advancement changed his mind. After a brief career as a figurative surrealist, Kawara destroyed his early work, left Tokyo for Paris then New York, and landed on a practice that would endure for nearly fifty years. His subject was time, and his goal was to record its passage.

The Best Art Tours To Try When In NYC

artist tours in nyc

There is no shortage of tour companies in New York City , and any one will sufficiently fulfill the sight-seeing needs of the average visitor, but for the art lover, stand-out tours are a little harder to find. Here is a list of five art tours enjoyed by New Yorkers and visitors alike that will have you seeing the art in this city a little differently.

The Two Percent

The Two Percent

For the high-tech art lover looking for a unique experience, this gallery tour of Chelsea has got you covered. David, who runs the tour, commissioned audio equipment used in museums and Broadway shows to turn his tour into an audio-visual experience. Tour-takers wear earbuds that allow them to hear David’s commentary anywhere within the gallery, releasing them from needing to congregate around the guide or having to strain to hear explanations…even adding a little spy-esque feel to the whole thing. The tour route features the top five galleries chosen from a selection of around 200 that David personally visits each month (hence the name of the tour).

Lauren A. Kaplan Tours

Lauren A. Kaplan Tours

This customizable tour of client-picked museums, galleries and exhibits is a hybrid of what Lauren (an art historian and museum educator) calls the ‘lecture’ method of tours: giving you facts about that art with a more interactive ‘inquiry’ method, which consists of asking questions to promote discussion while also blending in a variety of historical context and true stories about the artists themselves. Short activities such as sketching and other games often feature into the experience as well. Popular requested tours include highlights or themed tours of the Metropolitan Museum, Chelsea gallery tours and tours of lower Manhattan’s iconic architecture.

Gotham SideWalks

Gotham SideWalks

In New York City, popularly nicknamed ‘Gotham’, street art has always been juxtaposed against the fine art housed in galleries, but the lines are blurring more than ever between the two. This tour takes you through the best of both on Manhattan’s Lower East Side , where an ever-changing street art scene and galleries coexist and influence one another. Rich, who runs the tour, has taught art for ten years and is a collage artist himself. A self-described tour ‘curator’ rather than ‘guide’, Rich involves the neighborhood art community to make the tour authentic. Count on him to invite the artists and gallery owners themselves to do the talking.

NYC Subway Art Tour

NYC Subway Art Tour

This subterranean tour takes you through the various works of art commissioned by the city to decorate New York’s subways since 1985, including sculptures, mosaics, murals and installations, all of which are easily missed if you move at the pace most New Yorkers do. While many mistakenly believe the tour is about graffiti, Darryl, the Bronx-born tour guide, says the art shown is as legitimate and well crafted as any that would be placed in the MOMA, though sometimes he’ll point out renegade art too. Much favored by repeat visitors to NYC and city natives alike, the tour will have you seeing the subways in a whole new light.

Art Fairy Education

For a fully personalized experience, this tour lets you specify your interests and suggests an itinerary based on what you’d like to see. The (art) world is your oyster here: you can pick something as particular as a single artist or art movement to something as broad as an entire genre or form of art. The tours also cover private collections and auction houses in addition to museums and galleries. The tour is headed by a team of eight guides, all of whom have strong art history backgrounds or work in the art world. Combined, the guides also speak four other languages aside from English: Russian, Spanish, French and Malay.

A look inside Balloon Story

Incredible immersive experiences to do in NYC right now

From art exhibits to theatrical events, these experiences promise to transport you to new realities.

Rossilynne Skena Culgan

As much as New Yorkers love their city, they want to be transported to another space and time — at least that's the trend museums, companies and artists are capitalizing on. Immersive exhibits, events and experiences are popping up all over NYC these days.

From theatrical experiences to trippy digital art taking over massive spaces, there's no shortage of ways to be immersed in a different reality. With so many ways to be immersed, we decided it was high time to round up all the cool, immersive events, exhibits and experiences happening in NYC now and coming up soon so you won't miss the chance to experience something new and potentially mind-blowing.

RECOMMENDED: The best museum exhibitions in NYC right now

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Incredible immersive experiences in NYC

1.  the strangers project at the oculus.

The Strangers Project at the Oculus

A new immersive installation at the World Trade Center hopes to remind us of our shard connectedness by displaying thousands of anonymous hand written stories collected from all sorts of people.

The exhibition, called   The Strangers Project , will be set up inside the South Concourse of the Oculus at the World Trade Center Thursdays through Sundays from 2pm until 7pm for an indefinite period of time.

Each note contains a true story by a stranger, ranging from hilarious tales to inspiring anecdotes and downright heartbreaking recountings. In the 15 years since the project started, Doman has collected more than 95,000 stories and allowed thousands of strangers to empathize with each other without ever meeting.

2.  The Balloon Story

The Balloon Story

Balloon Story , a "balloon wonderland," has taken over the Park Avenue Armory with a whopping 600,000 inflatables set up across different exhibit rooms.  More than anything, the artistry involved in crafting monuments out of balloons will leave you amazed.

On display through August 24 (tickets are available right  here ), Balloon Story offers patrons interactive activations—a balloon maze, for example, and a jungle ball pit—but it's the actual recreations of iconic landmarks and figures that are the highlight of the production: you'll find yourself staring at each one wondering, how, exactly, they were built.

The show is split into sections that range in theme but not in scope: the subjects are different but they are all built using “environmentally friendly” natural rubber.

3.  "BLOOM: The Secret Wonders of New York’s Forgotten Eden" at HERO

"BLOOM: The Secret Wonders of New York’s Forgotten Eden" at HERO

It’s hard to imagine anything else at the site of the iconic Rockefeller Center. But 200 years ago, long before the famed skyscraper was built, this land was home to a lush greenspace called Elgin Gardens—it was America’s first botanical garden.

A new immersive art experience will now explore that beautiful history in Rockefeller Center. HERO, which opened inside Rockefeller Center late last year near the ice rink, will debut “ BLOOM: The Secret Wonders of New York’s Forgotten Eden ” on May 15; it runs through the summer.

At the all-ages exhibit, expect to walk through eight interactive experiences that promise to engage your senses with a captivating soundscape, changing scentscapes, interactive digital components, and light and video installations.

4.  "Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies" at ARTECHOUSE

"Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies" at ARTECHOUSE

Digital art and poetry have combined for a dive into Afrocentricity and Afrofuturism at this new immersive exhibit in Chelsea. " Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies " is now open at ARTECHOUSE and runs all summer.

The digital art exhibition promises a "vibrant reflection upon the past, present, and future of the Black experience." It's told through the perspective of London-based Afro-surrealist digital artist Vince Fraser alongside evocative poetry by ursula rucker.

Both artists worked to honor the legacy, struggles, and complexities of the Black experience in their work. Even the exhibition's title, "Aṣẹ" stems from a powerful mantra, affirmation, and philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, meaning "so will it be." (By the way, that's pronounced as AH-shay.)

5.  Mercer Labs

  • Financial District

Mercer Labs

Mercer Labs, Museum of Art and Technology  is  a unique new immersive museum created by Roy Nachum, the artist behind Rihanna’s famous 2016 “Anti” album cover, and his business partner Michael Cayre, a real estate developer.  Not only are the visual elements striking and entertaining but certain rooms are specifically targeted towards the younger set while appeasing adults as well. A mere walk through Mercer Labs makes one thing clear: the immersive space can be much more than that given its size and the clear technological capabilities embedded in each room.

6.  "The INTERnet" at INTER_

"The INTERnet" at INTER_

Basically a massive maze made of ropes, this new exhibit allows attendees to jump inside, climb, relax and even get lost in the whole webbed arrangement that’s comprised of 80,000 feet of handwoven rope, which is part of a 400-square-foot interactive artwork created by Treenet Collective, a net expert company.

Find "The INTERnet" at  INTER_ , the interactive art center at 415 Broadway by Canal Street in Soho.

The installation, which accommodates 15 people at once, boasts a variety of different weaving styles, each one creating a "setting" for folks to dive into, including the "quantum leap," where guests can play in mid-air, and the "social network," a more serene space that will feel like you are floating above everyone else.

7.  IMAGINARI: The Insect World

IMAGINARI: The Insect World

Think bugs are creepy? Think again. That's the message of IMAGINARI, an immersive art and science experience in Manhattan.

The year-long exhibition called  The Insect World  shows just how cool—and important—bugs actually are.  You’ll get to walk through fields of 6-foot flowers, come face-to-face with Picasso bug artwork, and see a mantis partying under a disco ball. Larger-than-life ladybug sculptures dot the floor, and 200 faux monarch butterflies perch on a 12-foot cherry blossom tree. It all adds up to an important message of environmental stewardship.

Tickets  are on sale now for $36; the all-ages exhibition will be on view until April 2025.

8.  The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City

  • Things to do

The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City

Live like Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe at  The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City . It's basically an immersive museum celebrating the '90s sitcom. You'll get to walk through rooms that look exactly like the ones on the TV show.

Photo opportunities abound. There’s a chance to pose with the “Pivot” couch, a backdrop that looks like the Vegas chapel, and a photo opp with Phoebe’s grandma’s taxi. You can even pose on top of Pat the Dog, snap a photo with the giant poking device and take a selfie in Monica’s apartment. Using high-quality cameras, staff take photos at each spot, which you can purchase at the end. But staff will also take free photos with your cell phone if you ask.

It's not just a selfie museum, though. There's a fascinating display featuring the show's costume designer Debra McGuire where you'll learn about her sartorial choices for each character. Another exhibit spotlights artist Burton Morris, whose Pop art pieces decorate Central Perk. Other display cases feature set designs, signed scripts, props and costumes.

9.  The House of Cannabis, NYC’s weed museum

  • Weird & Wonderful

The House of Cannabis, NYC’s weed museum

Many museums start with some kind of orientation, like a map or remarks from a docent. But not The House of Cannabis (a.k.a. THC NYC), the new weed museum in Soho. Instead, this museum starts, quite fittingly, with a trippy “Disorientation Room.”

While this museum boasts plenty of mind-bending multi-sensory bells and whistles, it also showcases art, highlights science and confronts the social justice issues baked into cannabis prosecution. The museum, the first of its kind at this scale, packs every inch of its four-story, 25,000-square-foot space at 427 Broadway with fascinating facts and delightful immersive experiences fit to entertain both tokers and non-smokers alike. Tickets ($45/adult)  are on sale now .

10.  Sleep No More

  • Theater & Performance

Sleep No More

The McKittrick Hotel is home to the world-famous production of  Sleep No More , a “site-specific, immersive experience” that blurs the line between audience and actor, stage and seating. It   began previews in March 2011 and has been continuously extended over the past decade.

But  the lights are fading out as  Sleep No More  concludes its nearly 13-year run on September  29, 2024 (an extended run).  The pioneering performance has hosted over two million guests and has a sister run still ongoing in Shanghai, China.

Go see the show before it closes;   here's our guide   to making the most of the experience.

11.  Summit One Vanderbilt

  • Sightseeing
  • Midtown East

Summit One Vanderbilt

Get ready for heart-pounding experience in the sky unlike any other experience atop a skyscraper.  Summit One Vanderbilt sits atop the new 67-floor One Vanderbilt super-tall—a 1,401-foot-high—skyscraper.

As the city's fourth-tallest building after One World Trade Center, Central Park Tower and 111 West 57th Street, it sits just west of Grand Central Terminal, where you first enter the experience underground. After a trip through a mirrored hallway with its own immersive elements, visitors take an elevator up to the 91st floor, where they're 1,000 feet over the streets and sidewalks of NYC.

Kenzo Digital has created a totally mirrored infinity room called "Air" that reflects the sky and city views over and over, making you feel like you're walking in the sky or on another plane of existence. Looking above you and below you in this two-story space, you see your reflection repeating forever.

One of the coolest parts of the experience is that it changes with the weather and time of day. When the weather is nice, it'll look like you're walking among the clouds. When it's stormy, you'll see the rain fly sideways and around the building.

12.  Sloomoo, a slime museum

Sloomoo, a slime museum

Part visual splendor, part olfactory wonder and part ooey-gooey sensory fun,   Sloomoo Institute’s slime museum  offers a captivating playground for all ages.

While Sloomoo is a highly Instagrammable experience, the founders hope you’ll spend some time away from your phone and immersed in the moment during your 90-minute visit to truly have the slime of your life. You can squish vats of slime, make your own slime to take home and even stand under a slime waterfall—that's truly immersive.

13.  Coming soon: An immersive ‘Mean Girls’ experience

Coming soon: An immersive ‘Mean Girls’ experience

Turns out, we're still trying to make fetch happen.

Coinciding with the release of the new   Mean Girls   movie, a new immersive experience based on the iconic film is scheduled to debut for a limited time in NYC this spring. The exact opening date is still TBD, so stay tuned.

The experience will involve a fast-casual restaurant serving cafeteria-style fare created by  Master Chef  semi-finalist Chef Becky Brown. Menu items include a “Stab Caesar” salad, the hilariously-named “burn book” burger sliders and a 1 3 5 Acai Bowl.

Passes aren't available yet, but we suggest you add yourself to the waitlist right   here   ASAP.

A Local’s Free, Self Guided NYC Street Art Tour

We all know that New York City street art is some of the most vibrant, dynamic, and exciting urban art in the entire world.

Where is the best street art in New York City so that you can take some of the amazing street art walks?

A valid question since New York City is enormous and wandering around aimlessly will get you absolutely nowhere, unless of course, you’re into doing an impromptu New York City marathon (I’m not if that wasn’t blatantly obvious).

That’s Where this Street Art, New York City guide comes in.

See, I’m one of those locals who is enchanted by street art; an artistic genre that has transformed graffiti, a classic sign of urban decay, into a worldwide movement that has made the beauty of art available to the masses.

I’ll sometimes spend my weekends hunting down some of the coolest street art in the city since graffiti art can be beautifully thought-provoking (and one of the best free things to do in New York City ).

I created this free, street art walking tour of New York City to help you easily see some of the best New York street art in only twenty-four hours.

I practically had kittens when I heard Banksy was back in New York City, so trust me, I do know where some of the best NYC street art spots are.

So Read On:

And find out how to create a free and super easy, self-guided street art tour of New York City .

If you’re booking a trip right now then I IMPLORE you to get travel insurance – even if it’s not from me.

After all, this past year has been a wild ride and I don’t want you to lose money because government regulations have changed.

Truth be told though, I’ve never traveled without travel insurance and don’t think you should either – especially since I think we’ve all had plans drastically change because of the pandemic.

Therefore, find an insurance agency that covers travel changes related to COVID-19, like my two all-time faves World Nomads and  Safety Wing . You can also read more about which policy is right for you in  my full review here .

One of my favorite New York City street art pieces of all time.

1.The Highline

So I’m Guessing:

You’ve probably heard of the Highline in New York City.

If Not Then:

The short version is that it’s an old railway track that was expertly converted into an above ground park that gives you one hell of a view of NYC as you walk through Chelsea.

Pretty Cool Huh?

Minus the times when there are ten thousand people there and you feel like you’re strolling along in a herd of cattle (go during the week or super early to avoid the crowds).

But Besides the Gorgeous Views and the Charming Scenery:

There are amazing pieces of street art that are scattered all along the Highline Walk.

Well, the Friends of the High Line association invited some of the best New York City street artists (and street artists from around the world) to create innovative pieces of street art all along the buildings that line the Highline.

The Best Part?

The art pieces here are forever changing so you’ll always have some new art to discover.

***Take the 7 line to the 34th Street and Hudson Yards station. From here, you can walk downtown along the Highline. Once you hit 24th street, you can stop for breakfast at either Sullivan Street Bakery (try the Bombolini aka an Italian doughnut) or at Johny’s Luncheonette (get the peanut butter and banana pancakes).

The beautiful street art along the Highline.

2. The Bowery Mural (76 E Houston Street)

***To get here from the Highline just take the L from the 14th Street/8th Avenue Station and transfer to the 6 at Union Square. From here, get off at the Bleecker Street station and it’s an easy walk to the mural.

It all started with Keith Haring.

He was the first artist to use this wall as a canvas for his iconic form of art (if you have time, you can also check out his Crack is Whack mural at E. 128th St. along Harlem River Drive. There’s even a park named after this mural. #lifegoals and weeds are for whacking. Get it? Lol).

Now at the time:

His work wasn’t really jazz hand worthy, at least to the public, so other artists quickly destroyed his piece with tags of their own.

He did start a movement towards using this wall to display iconic works of street art, in a rather economically depressed part of the city (Not so much anymore but there are still a ton of homeless people asking for money along the Bowery. They even asked me for a banana! True story).

Art Enthusiasts Liked this Idea So Much:

That, Jeffrey Deitch (a super fancy art curator who is a super big deal and that I had to look up because I had no idea who he was) partnered with Goldman Global Arts (aka the company that owns this wall) to hire world-renowned street artists to paint murals on this now immortal wall.

Bansky actually did some iconic Bansky street art NYC here (see below), so obviously, this spot is a pretty big deal.

if you are looking for some pretty rad street art, then the Bowery Mural is where it’s at since this wall is forever changing and always has some stellar street art on display.

WORD…

Right, I’ll stop pretending to be cool.

artist tours in nyc

***If you have some time, stop by the New Museum on our way to our next street art hotspot (literally right on the way to Freeman’s Alley). Trust me, the New Museum is an amazing place to discover the latest contemporary art and to catch a glimpse of the city from the museum’s top floor.

***If you want to take a food break, head over to Super Moon Bake House for some great desserts. Everything is amazing but their CROISSANT BUTTER SOFT SERVE is divine. They also make a red, Bi-Color Croissant filled with Raspberry and tarragon jam.

Yum! If you want something a little more savory, head over to Lombardi’s (the earlier the better since it’s usually packed) and get an iconic slice of New York style pizza.

3. Freeman’s Alley

What I love about Freeman’s Alley is that it is one of the great hidden gems in New York City!

Unless you know it’s here, obvi.

Tourists will typically walk right by this alley and take no notice of this quirky, Lower East Side New York City street art sanctuary that local street artists have created.

But You’re Reading this Post.

So now you know all about Freeman’s Allery and how to use this self-guided street art tour NYC to fully appreciate the innovative jewels of art that are plastered along this little New York City alley.

Just Walking Through this Tiny Corner of NYC:

You’ll be overwhelmed by the beauty and creativity of one of my favorite street art NYC locations.

Freeman’s Restaurant  is a foodie mecca of sorts and has a quaint, restaurant storefront at the end of this alley.

The front of this restaurant will be major Instagram goals for any traveler in New York City.

But this Restaurant Isn’t Just a Pretty Face.

The food here is some of the best food in New York City.

Between the quinoa bowl (if you’re trying to be moderately healthy) and the pea and goat cheese tortellini (if you don’t give a fig about calories), you’ll probably end up licking your plate clean.

And no, I won’t judge you for it.

Just Make Reservations.

This place gets packed, especially on the weekends.

And while the street art here is nice, it loses it’s appeal when you’re starving after waiting two hours for a table.

Yup, even street art can’t stop a serious case of HANGRY

***If you’re looking for a dining experience that is a bit more casual, check out the Egg Shop . Seriously some of the best egg sandwiches of my life.

Morgenstern’s finest ice cream is also right down the street and serves divine raspberry cheesecake ice cream (add this little gem to your very own NYC foodie tour) , with a great street art mural right across the street.

Some of the best street art in New York City can be found in this quaint little alley near Chinatown.

4. L.I.S.A. Project (Mulberry Street in Little Italy)

***To get to Mulberry Street, just walk down Chrystie Street and turn right at Broome Street (if you hit Grand Street subway station then you’ve gone too far).

Walk along Broome Street until you hit Mulberry Street. You’ll see a Cha Cha Matcha (a great place to sit, relax, get some Instagram photos, and enjoy a nice cup of Matcha or coffee) on your left as you reach Mulberry Street.

I love how NYC is now paying artists from around the world to create street art within certain neighborhoods in the city; a spray paint, street art practice NYC that used to be considered vandalism as opposed to any actual form of art.

I support it since these works of art are downright j aw-dropping.

But it cracks me up that the L.I.S.A. project in NYC teams up with the Merchants Association of Little Italy to create street art that adds to the charm and appeal of this lovely neighborhood.

My Personal Favorite?

The Audrey Hepburn portrait that is displayed with a colorfully quirky New York City twist.

But There are a Ton of Other Amazing Street Art Pieces Here Too.

So relax, stroll through this iconic New York City neighborhood, and see what you can find. Part of the fun is walking down the street and being surprised by what you find next on a mini NYC street art tour of Little Italy.

So I have been talking a lot about my mom but there are so many women in this world that inspire me to be strong and fierce and follow my dreams. One is Audrey Hepburn. She was so classy and beautiful and overcame so much in her life. So who inspires you and why? Can’t wait to find out and get inspired for Monday. #girlwiththepassport A post shared by Kelly • Solo Travel Blogger (@girlwitthepassport) on Feb 4, 2018 at 7:58pm PST

***DO NOT eat in Little Italy. Except if it’s Da Nico’s which has pretty amazing pizza. Oh, and they send out a free plate of zeppole for dessert so no need to order any sweets. The rest of Little Italy is rather overpriced and devoid of any great food.

***It’s also acceptable to grab a cannoli from Cafe Palermo. Actually, you can also stop by Aunt Jake’s for some amazing pasta.

5. Centre-Fuge Public Art Project (East 1st Street)

***To get to this next art space, walk back towards Broome street and make a right. Walk until you hit Sara D. Roosevelt Park and make a left onto Chrystie Street. Continue straight ahead until you hit East Houston Street and the park will be across the road and to your right.

The idea behind this street art collective is simple yet brilliant.

Lower East Side residents Jonathan Neville and Pebbles Russell (any relation to Bam Bam? Sorry, I had to go there) got tired of constantly looking out at gross construction sites.

The noise, the cranes, the rubble…

They all fused together to create one giant eyesore that no one wanted to look at

The Solution?

Transform hideous construction sites into stunning street art exhibits by painting vibrant, artistic masterpieces on the exterior of construction trailers, work trucks, etc.

Talk about going from Drab to Fab.

Started in 2011, this art project has grown in size and scope to become one of the best places to find street art murals in Manhattan.

***Hungry? Can you tell that I think with my stomach? Well, if you actually are hungry, walk down Ludlow Street (which has amazing street art and Instagram spots anyway) and stop by Black Tap . I have heard their burgers are amazing but I always come here for the Birthday cake specialty shake. Yum!

You know what they say? Birds of a feather flock together...towards the best street art in New York City.

6. First Street Green Art Park (33 East First Street)

I’m not gonna go to in depth with this next spot on our street art walking tour NYC.

Well, it’s literally right on top of the Centre-Fuge Public Art Project so they both kind of meld together to form this giant buffet of ridiculously awesome street art.

What I will Say Is:

When I was here, there was a tremendous amount of politically charged art that didn’t fall into the category of, “pretty street art that you can just rush through after you get your selfie swerve on”.

Take your time strolling through this street art collective.

There are some amazing, gut-wrenching, powerful, and truly thought-provoking street art pieces that deserve your consideration.

So stop, relax, and take in the true meaning of the beauty all around you (think of it as an unofficial street art exhibit NYC)

Not that I’m Some Pro Art Critic Who Understands the True Meaning Behind these Pieces.

Maybe the important thing is that all these pieces can mean different things to different people.

All great change starts with an army of one.

***To get to our final stop in Brooklyn (woot, woot), I would walk four minutes to the second avenue station of the F train. Take this train towards Coney Island and take it three stops to York Street Subway Station.

7. DUMBO (20 Jay Street, Brooklyn)

DUMBO (aka not the flying elephant):

Is probably one of the best neighborhoods in all of New York City (and a place you can to your Brooklyn street art map)!

Between the cobblestone streets, the delicious Juliana’s Pizza (some of the best pizza in NYC), the delectable NYC coffee from Brooklyn Roasting Company, the ultra-cool shops for hipster wannabes like me, and the iconic views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline, it’s a miracle that I ever leave at all.

Actually, Wait

I could NEVER afford to live in DUMBO.

So unless I wanna be homeless, I kind of have to leave.

It’s no surprise that this cultural hotspot is also home to some amazing Brooklyn street art spots, all of which lie within a four-block block radius of the BQE.

Now Bare in Mind:

These eight murals were created back in 2013 when various neighborhood improvement groups invited world-famous street artists to beautify the streets of DUMBO.

Many of these pieces, while impressive and meaningful, are somewhat faded and less pronounced than they once were.

So just keep that in mind when you visit because I don’t want you to get all disappointed because these street art murals aren’t as glam as you thought they’d be.

These murals are great street art NYC pieces,  but they are just not as amazing as they once were.

8. World Trade Mural Project

Unique graffiti at World Trade Mural Project

Have you seen the brand-new street art murals at the WTC? Simply awesome They are in the Financial District all around The Oculus Plaza, so be sure to stroll on all those streets (and crossing streets) where the Oculus and 9/11 Memorial Plaza are.

They are bright and highly uplifting, embodying the atmosphere of New York with kind words to the city and the globe.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey collaborated with Silverstein Properties to plan these WTC Murals. They understood that in order to avoid giving off the impression that the area was under construction, vibrant, upbeat energy was required.

Including artwork by artists including Todd Gray, Hektad, BoogieRez, Stickymonger, BoogieRez, and the husband-and-wife collaboration of Chinon Maria and Sebastian Mitre.

Ground Zero served as a perpetual construction site that served as a memorial to the September 11th attacks for locals and tourists alike.

However, if you go to the World Trade Centers’ Oculus, you may view some of our favorite street artists’ creations that were ordered by 2WTC.

Don’t miss these striking walls, which have revived optimism in downtown Manhattan.

As co-curators of the 69th floor of 4WTC, Mar and Izzy, street art tour guides with Free Tours by Foot, are pleased to have advised on the World Trade Mural Street Art Project.

They are the tour guides for Free Trips by Foot’s street art and graffiti tours.

Additionally, you may visit this artwork during Lower Manhattan Tours.

This Concludes This Episode of Girl With the Passport, Street Art NYC Locations Edition

I’m Gonna Try and Be SUPER Honest for a Moment.

Are these all of the absolute best street art locations in New York City?

Nope, not a chance.

Between Coney Island Art Walls, the Big Pun Memorial in the Bronx, the Bushwick Collective.

(There is a whole Bushwick street art map that you can check out), the Freedom Tunnel, Graffiti Hall of Fame in East Harlem, Tuff City in the Bronx, the Welling Court Project in Queens, etc. there are simply too many amazing graffiti street art, NYC locations to see them all in twenty four hours in New York City .

You’d Probably Need a Solid Week to see all those street art locations during some great street art tours in NYC.

That’s Why:

I intentionally shortened this list of stellar NYC graffiti art locations.

The majority of these iconic street art pieces, like the Audrey Hepburn street art NYC, are located in lower Manhattan and DUMBO since these are the areas in New York City that most visitors frequent.

So embrace your inner NYC abstract art critic and take a street art walk to visit some of the best spots for street art NYC.

And if you want to pay for a tour, Graff Tours has some great artist led street art tours and workshops.

Graff Tours is based in Brooklyn and will show you some of the best Brooklyn street art locations.

From Dumbo to Coney Island to Little Italy to Harlem, NYC street art is some of the best street art in the world. But it can best hard to find the best New York City street art locations, to do some great New York City photography when you're not a local. That;s why this local's street art guide will help you find some of the best street art in New York City since street art tours are one of the great free, New York City things to do. #streetart #NYC #NewYorkCity #USA

A living room with a metal fireplace, walls painted wide stripes of blue and red, a chaise longue with a curved back, open metal shelves and a wooden chair.

A Derelict Townhouse Becomes a D.I.Y. Wonderland

How a collective of artists turned a crumbling Brussels building into their own creative playground.

In the living room of the artists Jaime le Bleu, Line Murken, Salomé Sperling and Sijmen Vellekoop’s home in Brussels — where they live and make work as a collective called Espace Aygo — a chaise longue of theirs titled So, Take Me Through What Happened, made with steel and scorched textiles excavated from their atelier following a fire. Next to the stainless-steel fireplace and wooden chair, both by le Bleu, is a polystyrene coffee table by Nicolas Zanoni. Credit... Philippe Braquenier

IT SEEMS ALMOST inevitable that the most disruptive art experiment in Brussels wound up on Rue du Marteau — or Hammer Street, as it might be called in English. At the beginning of 2022, the French visual artist Salomé Sperling, 25, then in her fourth year at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, discovered a listing for a 5,000-square-foot, six-bedroom townhouse about 90 minutes from campus by car that came with a 600-square-foot atelier. Sperling and four fellow schoolmates — Jaime le Bleu, 27, Ale Mangindaan, 24, Line Murken, 28, and Sijmen Vellekoop, 26 — decided to create a studio of their own in the house, located in the city’s densely populated Saint-Josse-ten-Noode neighborhood. The fact that the building was derelict and covered in at least a decade of grime, with patchy electricity and no heat, only made them like it more.

House Tour | Espace Aygo

The artist-roommates show off their shared brussels townhouse where they made virtually everything, including a sink fixture from a pétanque ball and a tub from urethane rubber..

I’m Sijmen. My name is Jaime. Hey, I’m Salomé. I’m Line. Welcome to Espace Aygo! We are an artist collective, conducting a domestic experiment by building and creating our environment and living in it. I’m sitting on the couch that I would have loved to play with as a kid. It’s inspired by the surroundings I grew up in. I’m from Marseilles. In here, I love to stare into the fresque that is showing beautiful curves of the body. Welcome to our room. We made a circus. So after producing the bed, we had this leftover material. And out of that, we made a chandelier piece. This is a piece that I like to get lost into. This window frame is an extension of a dream where this pattern appeared. I made this bath to return back to the womb. Everything in here is big, because we like to do things together. While making the kitchen, we thought that we were hobbits from the Industrial Revolution. We made those plates so that dirty dishes can become sculptures. Bye! Ciao!

Video player loading

That winter, the five students (Mangindaan has since relocated to Berlin) got to work renovating the four-story property, which was built during the second half of the 19th century as a private home and later used as an office. It took three months to make the place habitable; in the dead of winter, they all slept in one room to conserve body heat. But often they’d just toil through the night, making furniture and other objects to fill the rooms. It was an opportunity not just to create work but to test it on themselves. “At school, you don’t learn how these things are actually being applied,” Vellekoop says.

A month after moving in, Espace Aygo — a nod to le Bleu’s beloved Toyota Aygo, which they use to transport discarded tables and chairs, odd scraps of metal and other salvaged materials back to their headquarters — was formed. “We had a rule in the beginning that you don’t go out of the house without bringing something back,” says Murken. The artist collective describes its style as “a patchwork,” the result of their own collagelike approaches to creating furniture, as well as the contributions of other artists who stay as part of an informal residency program. Except for the kitchen utensils, almost everything has been made by them.

From the foyer, a long multicolor corridor leads to a central staircase and the studio behind it. To the right of the hallway, in a salon with a ceiling fresco of a female nude by the artist Klaartje van Essen and Rothkoesque walls in shades of clementine and cobalt blue, the building’s original stained-glass windows and marble fireplace have been preserved (although the mantel is now covered in stainless steel). Through an archway lined with plaster casts of their friends’ breasts, there’s a snug alcove known as the Grotto, which has papier-mâché walls made from copies of a novel that they discovered in the basement. With its bright green splatter-shaped rug and a sofa made by Sperling from a tangled nest of misshapen blue cushions atop welded metal rods, the room has an elemental, almost grotesque feel.

In the basement, the kitchen evokes what the group jokingly calls “the industrial revolution of Hobbits.” A tentacular hammered-steel light fixture hanging above the metal-and-cardboard pulp dining table made by le Bleu has magnetic ends for storing cutlery. The group eats off colorful glazed clay plates made to resemble a totem sculpture when stacked. (That way, even a pile of dirty dishes can look good.) On the third floor, Sperling and le Bleu, who are a couple, share a giant butterfly-shaped, stainless-steel bed that they made together. On the top floor, in Murken’s bedroom, walls constructed from insulation foam and plaster-covered papier-mâché conjure a fleshy cocoon. Vellekoop’s room, a work in progress, is just a temporary wooden bed frame and a mattress.

IN APRIL 2022, the residents of Espace Aygo began hosting cultural events. The following November, they organized a life drawing class that was so well attended it turned into a wild party. “It was out of control,” says Murken. “Afterward, it felt like the whole space had been a little abused,” adds Vellekoop somberly. A week later, while Sperling and Murken were in the atelier completing a private commission — a human-size steel cage covered in polyurethane foam — a spark from a heat gun set the highly flammable materials alight. Murken and Sperling were rescued by the fire department, and they all spent the night next door, where Sperling’s best friend from childhood happens to live, but when they returned the next morning, thieves had stolen their tools and computers.

The destruction prompted a reset — and deepened their bond. “It’s so easy to be good with each other when things are good,” says Vellekoop. “But when things are bad, it’s important to know that you can rely on one another.” In a therapeutic act, they built a chaise longue and upholstered it in the fireproof curtains that survived the blaze. “We have this idea that the house told us to chill out,” says Sperling. “We’d lost track of what we were doing here.”

A cover of T Magazine with the title “All Eyes on Us: From Brussels to Provence, houses that dare you to look away.” The image is of a strangely-shaped sofa in an alcove with a metal frame and dozens of blue and orange cushions.

They also recommitted to finishing what they started: making vases for the hallway out of repurposed wood from an ax-throwing bar; tackling the bathroom where they often congregate — sometimes all of them at once — in the shower. Murken wanted the new tub, which is coated in urethane rubber that softens in hot water, to evoke the feeling of being inside a womb. The shower and sink are made from fiberglass and pigmented polyester, and a pétanque ball has been repurposed into a faucet.

When their lease ends in December, the building will be gutted. And yet the group is optimistic: The plan is to sell the furniture and begin again. “You can put us anywhere and we can apply what we’ve learned,” says le Bleu. “We’re literally creating a world that makes us happy,” adds Sperling. “We want to explore that even more.”
