How To Do Self-Guided ATV Excursions in Aruba

aruba self guided utv tour

If you read our one-week guide to Aruba , you know that day two is your action-packed ATV tour of the Island! We would recommend taking an off-road adventure to anyone visiting, whether you do it with a tour or self-guided. If you’re looking to do self-guided ATV excursions in Aruba – we highly recommend you follow our guide. Take your time where you want to, skip the parts that really aren’t as impressive, and maybe avoid the tidal waves of mud we ran into…?

Post Update: August 2024 – UTVs are no longer allowed in the national park but you can still take them throughout the island and hike the park!

The perks of doing it yourself are especially beneficial for photographers . First things first – doing self-paced excursions in Aruba allows for a non-strenuous day. You don’t have to worry about your equipment while on your tour. The second thing we loved about doing our own tour was having plenty of time to see the whole island. During our 7-hour rental period, we got in some great shots!

**Remember that Aruba is a tiny island. Only 70 square miles, you won’t even have to fill up on gas to see all the sights on our list!!

Know Before You Get to Aruba: Language : Aruba and its neighboring island Curacao are actually owned by the Netherlands, (a tiny country in Europe). Dutch and the native Papiamento are the official languages but English is widely spoken. Currency: Aruban Florin: but as we were told ‘Cash is king’ and most places wanted and accepted $$ US Dollars. Best Time To Visit Aruba: The weather is pleasant year-round and the water stays around 78 degrees Farenheight, perfect for swimming! Closest Airport: Beatrix International Best Hotels: Hotel Riu , Divi Golf & Beach Resort Aruba Drinking-Water: Aruba’s tap water is drinkable!!

How To rent an ATV in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

How To Rent An ATV/UTV in Aruba

First things first: If you don’t live in the Southern USA – you might not have grown up driving one of these bad boys and we respect that. (We, of the South, call them four-wheelers or buggies.. and we’ve been driving them from birth!!) Driving an ATV or UTV is really easy so no need to worry. You’ll get a little tutorial when you rent the vehicle, and figure it out as you go.

You might see that some countries require an international driver’s license like we thought before heading to Italy. When we got to Italy we were only required to have a valid driver’s license, and a credit card for the rental company to put a damage deposit hold on. Whether it’s Vespas in Italy or ATV excursions in Aruba, the rules are all pretty much the same.

To rent an ATV without a tour guide in Aruba, you need a valid driver’s license and a credit card for a damage deposit.

If you Google “ATV rentals in Aruba…” – you’ll find plenty of options. We recommend calling ahead to make sure they have availability for the day you want to go and watch the weather. Driving an ATV is incredibly fun, but after getting stuck in a crazy rainstorm, we know how important it is to check the weather!

We look back and laugh now – but it was terrible at the time. Cold wet rain from a near-tropical Caribbean storm pelted our legs, faces, and bodies!!

Your ATV Island Tour Itinerary

If you’re trying to determine how long you should plan to be gone for the day – make sure your rental covers full 6-8 hours. Regardless of whether you’re a photographer or an avid explorer – you’re going to want to take your time!! We started at around 9 in the morning and came back at around 4 (so we were gone around 7 hours.)

Most rental companies will want you to be back by around 5 so make sure to give yourself some cushion!! Are you ready to see private beaches, ruins, hidden coves, and centuries-old cave drawings?!

Tres Trapi Beach in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

1st Stop on Your Itinerary: Tres Trapi

Once you’ve grabbed breakfast from your resort and picked up you ATV – head to your first stop!! No ATV tour of Aruba would be complete without making a stop at one of our favorite hidden beaches on the island – Tres Trapi Beach.

Meaning ‘Three Steps’ – you’ll climb down three rocky steps into one of the most serene and private coves on the island. Spend a few minutes getting in a refreshing morning dip before heading on to your next destination!

**Many times when you book ATV excursions in Aruba they don’t take you here so that you don’t disturb the neighborhood with many ATVs zipping through a neighborhood. Doing it yourself gives you the opportunity to see little gems like this!!

Get our Full Guide To Finding Tres Trapi Here

Westpint in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.2 Boca (Westpunt)

This rocky northern tip of the island is a great place to take in a sea spray rainbow. Not a swimming destination – this quiet corner of the island is accessible by a dirt road leading away from the California Lighthouse.

We loved the views of the waves crashing against the volcanic rock cliffs. We recommend going during the day. That early morning sun will allow you to see the rainbow that you won’t see during sunset!!

  • How To Get To Westpunt/Boca: from Tres Trapi, drive your four-wheeler North on L.G. Smith Boulevard past the California Lighthouse. From this point, you’ll be offroad driving until you reach the sea!

You won’t spend a ton of time here – but it’s a great photography destination that no one else will be around. You’ll also get great views of the Arashi Dunes ! Located on the same northern tip of the island in Arasji – you only need a short 10 minute ATV ride to reach the dunes from the beach. With mounds covered in tiny cactus-like plants, you can’t ride the ATV through the dunes but they’re fun to walk around!!

TIP: You’ll definitely need to wear your sturdier shoes for this excursion. The rocks are sharp and there isn’t any sand.

The california lighthouse - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.3 The California Lighthouse

When you’re on your ATV excursion in Aruba, no trip will be complete without exploring Aruba’s famous California lighthouse! With 360-degree views from the top of this white-washed, green-domed lighthouse – it’s a can’t miss experience.

  • How To Find the California Lighthouse: Located in ‘Hudishibana’ on Aruba’s most northwestern cape, after visiting Westpunt Beach and the Arashi Dunes, head back towards L.G. Smith Boulevard. Before continuing towards the Eastern shore of the island, you’ll take the boulevard towards the California lighthouse. You can’t get lost! There is literally nothing else near this spot on the island.

Cost: Visiting the lighthouse is free – but climbing to the top is $5. (Visiting the lighthouse is one of our favorite budget-friendly excursions in Aruba!!)

At eight stories high, visitors can see all the way from Malmok Beach to Eagle Beach on the Western side of the island. When looking East, try to spot the Tierra Del Sol Golf Course or the Alta Vista Chapel. If you’re on a romantic trip – we highly recommend climbing to the top!!

Grab a coconut on a snack break in ARuba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

Take A Coconut Water Snack Break!

Before heading to your next destination – grab a coconut! Located around the lighthouse – you’ll see vendors selling street food and coconut water.

We chose to stop here and watch as a vendor expertly hacked off the top of a coconut and inserted a dainty straw for us to sip on. Enjoy one of the island’s easiest snacks!

Aruba’s Flora and Fauna On your stop – take a moment to notice the Mondis. (Large forests of cacti!) Amongst the cacti, you’ll see large yellow blooms protruding from their thorny buds throughout the year. Other flowers you’ll see are the large purple and white blooms of Magdalena flowers, hibiscus, and wild orchids!

The Alto Vista Chapel in ARuba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.4 The Alto Vista Chapel

Built-in 1953, visiting the Alto Vista Chapel is widely regarded as one of the best things to do in Aruba.

  • How To Get To Alto Vista Chapel: If you’re riding an ATV, taking the scenic route along the Eastern Aruban coast is the best way to get to Alto Vista Chapel. When you leave the lighthouse, take a right (away from the resort side of the island) and head towards the coast. Drive your ATV past the Tierra del Sol Golf Course, and continue along the costal road past the colorful beach house at Ranchero Curason. After another few minutes along dusty Alto Vista road – you’ll reach the chapel!

This tiny sunbleached yellow chapel stands at the site of the original chapel built in 1750. Venezuelan missionary, Domingo Silvestre was the first to convert the indigenous people to Christianity, after choosing this legendary spot with sweeping views of the sea.

** If you’re Catholic and would like to attend Mass- there are still weekly services held at the Alto Vista Chapel.

Tierra Del Sol Golf Course in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.5 Lunch at Tierra Del Sol Golf Course

Getting lunch at the golf course might sound silly – but we promise it’s worth the little 7-minute backtrack! We didn’t recommend heading here until after you’ve visited the Alto Vista Chapel because you may not have been hungry yet. Trust us when we say – you want to have an appetite for lunch at Tierra del Sol.

  • How To Get To Tierra del Sol Golf Course: From Alto Vista Chapel, head west away from the coast on Alto Vista road. You’ll come to a neighborhood, but if you stay on the main road you’ll run into Rte 2/Caya Frans Figaroa. Take a right and head north. Only a 5-6 minute drive, you’ll stay on Rte 2 until you see signs for the Tierra del Sol Golf Course. Take a right on Caya di Solo and you’re there!

We mentioned in our Aruban 7-Day Itinerary that Aruba is where Shelb’s love for beef carpaccio was born – and the golf course has an excellent take on this dish!

***When you get to our packing list for the day – stopping here is why we included a nicer coverup for your ATV excursions in Aruba. You’ll want to put on something a little nicer!

Bushiriba Gold Mill Ruins - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.6 Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins in Noord, Aruba

The next stop on your list is another one of the best things to do in Aruba. You can climb all over the Bushiribana ruins with views of the Eastern coast of Aruba for miles.

Designated as a National Historical Cultural Site for the Aruban people – it’s one of the few ruins we’ve been to around the world you can touch! Just remember to please be respectful.

Explorers looking for gold starting searching Aruba for this famed yellow treasure as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. After the first gold was discovered in 1892, the island produced 3 million pounds of gold. Operations soon ceased when the gold was depleted, but there are still two mills and one mining site left on the island.

  • How To Find the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins: From the Tierra del Sol Golf Course it’s a 24 minute drive. Take Rte 2 south towards Oranjestad for about 5 km, then take a left of Rte 3. Rt3 will eventually turn into Rte 6, and you’ll be on this road for 8.7 km (13 minutes.) You’ll be heading towards Matividiri and there will be signs for this little hamlet. From Rte 6, take the road called Matividiri to the Bushiribana Ruin. (There will be signs!)

If you have time – visit the Aruba Ostrich Farm only 2 minutes from the ruins!! Great for kids and families, stretch your legs on a guided tour while you feed ostrich!! $14 Adults | $7 Children

New Natural Pool in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

Bonus Destination: New Natural Pool

Only steps away from the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins lays a secret cove that most people miss!

Climb down a wooden ladder into this stunning lagoon carved out of limestone along the shore. This is part of your day’s adventures we highly recommend having water shoes in your backpack!! Jump from the rocky cliffs along the edge of the pool and enjoy a refreshing break!

Psttttt.. Not Up For A Do-It-Yourself Tour!?

Here are a few great tours we recommend to hit many of these sites. You may not have this full experience but you’ll still get a great feel of the island!

If you’re taking a guided tour of the island – your tours often take you to the Bushiribana Ruins, the New Natural Pool, and Arikok National Park.

Baby Bridge in ARuba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.7 Natural Bridge

You may have seen photos of Natural Bridge in Aruba, and it’s stunning right? Unfortunately, it collapsed in 2004 but remains one of the most photographed parts of the island. Like our home state of Kentucky – thousands of years of water and erosion on beds of limestone hollow out the rocks leaving behind these gorgeous limestone arches.

  • How To Find Natural Bridge: On Aruba’s Eastern coast, about 7 minutes south of the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins is where you’ll find these arches. Head South from the ruins until you hit Matividiri Road. Take a left and drive for about 2.2 km. The arches will be on your left along the coast.

While Natural Bridge fell in 2004, Baby Bridge nearby remains standing and you can walk across the top – or explore the bottom when the tide is low.

P.S. If you’re starting to feel a bit snacky – grab a snack at the cunucu house nearby!!

How to find Conchi natural pool in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.8 Conchi (Natural Pool)

Undoubtedly one of the most famous and well-traveled spots in Aruba is Conchi – Natural Pool.

Encircled by black volcanic rock, this dramatic pool on the coast is one of our favorite photography destinations in Aruba. Located inside Arikok National Park, visitors can only access the pool by ATV, horseback tours, or hiking.

When you get to the Natural Pool, you can expect it to be very slick getting in and out of the water. Again we remind you to bring your water shoes! As for what to expect in the pool, there are fish circling through the sparkly emerald waters and the ocean sprays you as it crashes on the large rock formation around the pool. You can’t miss it on your trip!!

How to find conchi natural pool in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

How To Get To Conchi Natural Pool in Aruba

Drive time from the entrance of Arikok National Park is about 45 minutes to Conchi Natural Pool and back. Keep that in mind when you’re planning out how long you’ll spend at each destination! This stop will take you around 2 hours.

How To Get To Conchi Natural Pool by Driving:

  • The first thing you need to do is head to the park’s San Fuego Entrance and pay the $11 entrance fee. You’ll be given a map and wristbands, at which point you can start heading towards Conchi Natural Pool.
  • Head north on the gravel road leading away from the park’s entrance and look for signs for the Sero Arikok Volcano (#14 on the map).
  • Continue on the gravel road past the volcano until you see a dirt path with a ‘4×4’s Vehicles Only’ sign.

This is where your journey will become more difficult – but doable.

The gravel road will end, and a dirt path will take you on the rest of your journey. Continue slowly on this rocky unstable road until you reach Conchi Natural Pool (#3 on the map) . Go as slow as your need to!!

  • How To Get To Conchi Natural Pool by Hiking: If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of driving all the way to Conchi Natural Pool, you can also get there by hiking. At the same trailhead Sero Arikok Volcano where you would start the 4×4 only dirt path, start your hike at a trial to the right. (This will save you time from having to hike from the visitors center!!) The hike to Conchi Natural Pool from this trailhead is 2.5 miles/4 kms. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and pack water!

Regardless of whether you hike or drive all the way to the pool – you’ll need to walk down 3 flights of stairs to get to the pool. (If you drove the ATV – make sure you throw your ATV keys in a dry bag and take it down to the pool with you!)

Guadirikiri Cave in ARuba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

No.9 Fontein Cave & Guadirikiri Cave

On a hot day – this last stop of your Aruba ATV excursion will be a cool reprieve from the island heat. Located close together in Arikok National Park are two of Aruba’s most unexplored treasures: the Fontein Cave and Guadirikiri Caves.

  • Guadirikiri Cave is the most well-known cave for its illuminated photos from the hole in the ceiling inside the 100-foot chamber. Definitely a photographer’s dream destination!! This two part chamber can be explored in about 10 minutes.

The Fontein Caves in Aruba - aruba excursions, UTV rental Aruba, ATV Rental Aruba, Aruba ATV Tours, Excursions in ARuba

  • Fontein Cave is for history lovers! When you get here – park rangers will give you guided explanations of the cave drawing by the Arawak Indians. They were originally Venezuelan indigenous peoples and became the first explorers of the island. Settling in 2500-1000 BC, they lived on this island until it was discovered by Spanish settlers in 1499!

P.S. If you’re looking for more inspiration to explore ancient native ruins and drawings, check out our guide to Arizona’s Native American Ruins!!

After you’ve explored the caves – it’s time to head back!! We hope you got to see everything on this bucket list and had an amazing day!

Need A Dinner Recommendation?

After exploring all day on your Aruba ATV tour – you’ll probably want something more low-key. We recommend grabbing fruity cocktails and tacos at Lola Taqueria !

Voted as one of the best restaurants in Aruba and winning a 2021 Traveler’s Choice Award from TripAdvisor – this trendy little restaurant is a must-try!

P.S. – If you’re not ready for the night to be over – try their sister bar ‘Craft’ for handcrafted cocktails!

How To Map Out Your ATV Excursion in ARuba

You can do a couple of things to map out your excursion and make the most of your ATV rental in Aruba.

  • #1 – Download the maps.Me app and add all of these locations to your offline maps.

P.S. If you want to come back to the lighthouse near sunset – you might even see the elusive green flash! Right before the sun sets below the blue of the Caribbean, for a second or two the upper edge of the sun will appear as a green mirage.

  • #2 – Save this post for extra guidance! Maps and directions are great – but sometimes you just need that extra hint to keep you going in the right direction.

A self guided ATV sounds like a great way to explore Aruba. We did a tour and were constrained by the tour timelines. We would love to use the ATV to visit one or more of the great beaches. And especially to find that secret cove!

' src=

Looks like so much fun!

' src=

Wow! So many beautiful spots to visit! Thank you for the great guide!

' src=

I’ve only ever seen people talk about Aruba in terms of beaches/sitting on beaches, which totally isn’t my thing. I’m actually super interested in going to Aruba after reading tis and seeing all the beautiful places you got to visit and take photos of! I am glad I saw this post:)

' src=

I would not have considered doing this kind of tour without a guide, but I see what you mean, it looks like you have an amazing (and non-stressful) time by organizing it all yourself. I love the spots you picked out too- such a good mix of gorgeous scenery, beaches and pools.

' src=

This is such a great guide! I love the California Lighthouse. So beautiful!

Could this also be done/modified for a jeep?

' src=

Hey there! I think everywhere we went you could also access with a jeep! However – I would confirm with the state park that you’re allowed to off-road in a larger vehicle. That’s the only place I could think you might have some troubles!

' src=

Did I miss the company you recommend renting the ATV from in Aruba? I love the idea of the self guided tour! How fast (mph) do ATV’s go? I am traveling with my 2 boys (20/18) and if I get to see sites – they need speed Thank you for sharing

There are a ton of different companies on the island that do it. We ended up being taken there by our Airbnb host and she basically got us set up. Pretty much any ATV rental place you can do the tour from! There are posted speed limits and the ATVs go as fast as those go! :)

Aruba: Self-Guided UTV Island Tour

aruba self guided utv tour

Located just 18 miles off of the Venezuelan coast, Aruba (also known as “One Happy Island”) is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It makes up 1/3 of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, & Curaçao) and at around 75 square miles it’s also the smallest of the three islands. While that is all very intriguing, one of the facts that people find most surprising about Aruba is that it is a desert island! Yes… You heard that right. A desert island. For that reason, we highly recommend taking some time on your visit to explore the interesting and unique landscapes that Aruba offers, and what better way to do that than on a self-guided UTV tour?? Yes, you can opt for a guided tour from many of the more than qualified tour operators, but we love being on our own schedule and stopping whenever and wherever we want. So, if you're like us and like to take adventure into your own hands, then you’re in the right place! In this blog, we’ve put together what we think are 8 of the best stops (from north to south) for a self-guided UTV island tour. While this itinerary can be achieved with a half-day (4-hr) rental you would really be pushing it to fit everything in (like we were lol), so we recommend a full-day (8-hr) rental to get the most out of the experience. That said, some of these will be quick 10-15 minute stops while others could take 45 minutes or more (mostly the “Secret Pool”), so plan accordingly… Especially if you opt for a half-day rental.

Note: If you are looking for a reputable company to book your rental through, we highly recommend Arubiana . We have no affiliation with them, we just had a great experience and felt they were fair and honest. Plus, they have an excellent app for Apple and Android with helpful information on all of these stops and more! So, even if you don’t book your UTV through Arubiana, we recommend purchasing the app for your tour.

If a self-guided tour sounds overwhelming, then check out this guided tour from GetYourGuide !

Be sure to check out our “Adventure Day in Aruba” vlog for a closer look at our self-guided UTV tour along with a snorkeling catamaran cruise!

aruba self guided utv tour

1. California Lighthouse (JW7X+GF Noord, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 15-30 mins

Cost: Free or $5 if you want to go to the top of the lighthouse

Quite possibly Aruba’s most famous scenic landmark, the California Lighthouse was named after the S.S. California which sank previous to the lighthouse’s construction in 1910. Perched on a hill on the northwestern tip of the island, the lighthouse offers incredible views of the island's western coastline. At the time of writing this (December 2022) Lighthouse tours are offered daily from 9am-7pm for $5/person which allows visitors to go to the top of the lighthouse for 360° views.

Pro-Tip: Don’t miss Yum Yum’s Place (AKA The Smoothie Bus) while you’re there! They have a variety of snacks and delicious fresh coconut and fruit smoothies as well as milkshakes and iced coffee!

aruba self guided utv tour

2. Alto Vista Chapel (HXGQ+9JC, Noord, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 10-15 mins

The present Chapel of Alto Vista was completed in 1952 and stands in the same location as the original chapel, which was built in 1750, making it the oldest church in Aruba. Although the chapel is quite small at only 50’x16’ this "Pilgrims Church" as it’s called is worth a visit.

aruba self guided utv tour

3. Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins (H23F+C9F, Noord, Aruba)

Constructed in 1872 by the London-based Aruba Island Gold Mining Company the Bushiribana Gold Mill closed its doors for good in 1899. Having been vacant for 120+ years now, the only structure that has withstood the harsh elements of the island is the natural stone walls. Visitors to the site nowadays can walk freely throughout the abandoned structure and carefully climb the remains of a staircase on the mill’s southern wall to enjoy beautiful, sweeping views of the Caribbean.

aruba self guided utv tour

4. Cave Pool Aruba AKA Secret Pool (H22G+W4 Santa Cruz, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 45-75 mins

This (not-so) secret pool is located just south of the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins. In fact, you can see the tour groups parking near the entrance to the pool from the ruins. And when I say “entrance”, I mean a rickety wooden ladder that you’ll have to climb down to access the pool. The “entrance”/ladder is easy to miss, especially if there are no other vehicles parked at the top, so be careful not to miss it! It’s also worth noting that this is the only pool accessible by UTV since Arikok National Park banned ATVs and UTVs in June of 2020. The more popular Conchi Natural Pool is inside the national park boundaries and is only accessible by foot (at least a 2-mile round trip hike depending on where you start from) or 4x4 (no ATVs or UTV’s). The Conchi Natural Pool also comes with an $11/person national park entrance fee while the Cave Pool is free to enjoy. And while it is “secret” it can get quite busy as many of the guided tours make stops here, but with a little patience and time, it’s not unusual to have the entire pool to yourself for a little while between tour groups. That’s one of the benefits of being on a self-guided tour!

aruba self guided utv tour

5. The Natural Bridge (G2RR+9Q Santa Cruz, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 15-20 mins

There was a time when the Natural Bridge was a must-see on the island, but the original, famous natural bridge collapsed in 2005 leaving only a smaller bridge called “Baby Bridge”. And while seeing “Baby Bridge” is pretty cool, this site is not nearly as impressive as it once was. Nonetheless, it is a good stop for a snack and/or bathroom break… Although either one will cost you at least $1.

aruba self guided utv tour

6. Ayo Rocks Formation (G2JH+GP Santa Cruz, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 30-45 mins

These monolithic rock boulders are a unique site for an otherwise flat and sandy landscape. The Arawak people (the earliest settlers on the island) used to visit the Ayo Rock Formations so that they could hear incoming thunderstorms closing in on the island. To this day, you can still find their carved paintings in rocks (petroglyphs) dating back thousands of years.

aruba self guided utv tour

7. Mangel Halto (F27J+V97, Savaneta, Aruba) 30-45

This secluded beach is popular with locals and tourists as it is a perfect sunning and snorkeling spot with calm, shallow waters that are rich in sea life due to the impressive network of mangroves. And while it is beautiful and offers the fairer-skinned visitors a break from the sun with the shade cast by the mangroves, the thick vegetation also attracts more bugs than many other areas, so if you do plan to make a visit to Mangel Halto, be sure to pack some bug spray!

aruba self guided utv tour

8. The famous Fofoti Trees at Eagle Beach (HW3V+RX7, Noord, Aruba)

Recommended Time: 30-60 mins

These famous Fofoti trees which are often mistaken for Divi Divi trees (an honest mistake… we did it! Lol) are an Aruban icon and 2 of the most famous ones can be found on one of the island's most beautiful beaches, Eagle Beach. Once you’ve gotten your photos of the beautiful trees, take some time to enjoy the beauty of Eagle Beach. That is if you have enough time left on your UTV rental!

Why Off-Road in Aruba

Off-roading in Aruba is one of the best things to do on the island . It offers an adventurous way to explore, giving you the opportunity to visit natural wonders and less accessible areas. Not sure if off-roading in Aruba is for you? Here are some reasons why you won’t want to miss it.

  • Explore Arikok National Park: Aruba’s Arikok National Park covers almost 20% of the island. It offers a variety of landscapes, including rugged terrain, rocky coasts, and desert-like areas. Off-road vehicles are one of the best ways to explore this national park’s tough terrain.
  • Swim at Natural Pool: Off-road tours in Aruba often include a visit to the Natural Pool, a picturesque and secluded swimming spot formed by volcanic rock along the coastline. This hidden gem is surrounded by rough terrain which makes ATVs and UTVs the perfect mode of transportation to reach it.
  • Discover Hidden Gems: Get off-the-beaten-path to locations that can not be easily reached by conventional vehicles. This makes it one of the only ways to enjoy panoramic views, unique rock formations, and other scenic attractions that showcase the natural beauty of Aruba.
  • Get Your Adrenaline Pumping: Aruba UTV tours add an element of excitement and adventure to the exploring the island. Navigating through bumpy and challenging terrains can be thrilling for those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled experience.
  • Visit Cultural and Historical Stops: ATV rentals in Aruba allow you to visit cultural and historical sites that you may not visit otherwise. This may include stops to old gold mines, caves with indigenous art, or other points of interest around the island.

It’s important to note that while off-road island tours in Aruba can be an exciting way to experience the island, it’s essential to choose a reputable tour operator that prioritizes safety and adheres to environmental conservation practices to minimize the impact on the island’s delicate ecosystems.

ATV vs. UTV in Aruba

While often used interchangeably, ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles) and UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) are actually two different types of off-road vehicles used for outdoor activities. To help you decide what type of Aruba off-road tour or rental you want, let’s learn a bit more about each of them and how they differ.

ATV: All-Terrain Vehicle

  • Design: ATVs typically have a straddle-style seat and handlebars for steering, much like a motorcycle. They are designed for a single rider or, in some cases, may have a tandem seat for a passenger.
  • Use: ATVs are generally more agile and maneuverable. This makes them suitable for activities such as trail riding, racing, and navigating through narrow or rough terrain.
  • Stability: Due to their single-rider design, ATVs may be more prone to tipping over, especially during sharp turns or on uneven terrain. Proper rider technique and safety precautions are crucial when operating an ATV.
  • Power: ATVs are generally smaller and have a lighter build. They come with a variety of engine sizes, ranging from smaller engines for recreational use to larger, more powerful engines for racing.
  • Terrain: ATVs are well-suited for tackling a variety of terrains, including wooded trails, sand dunes, and rocky landscapes.

UTV: Utility Task Vehicle

  • Design: UTVs are designed with a side-by-side seating arrangement, allowing for a driver and one or more passengers to sit next to each other, like in a car. They also can have a backseat to allow for additional passengers.
  • Use: UTVs are often larger and built for utility tasks. They are commonly used for hauling cargo, carrying equipment, and performing work on farms, construction sites, or other industrial applications.
  • Stability: UTVs typically have a lower center of gravity and a wider wheelbase, providing increased stability. This makes them a safer option for tasks that involve carrying heavy loads or navigating uneven terrain.
  • Power: UTVs are larger and have a more robust structure to accommodate additional passengers and cargo. They often come equipped with more powerful engines suitable for heavy-duty tasks.
  • Terrain: UTVs are designed to handle rough terrain as well, but their larger size and utility focus make them better equipped for hauling, towing, and working in challenging environments.

Around Aruba, you’ll find both ATVs and UTVs are common. This means it is really up to you whether you want to drive or ride an ATV or UTV. Similarly, you can choose from joining a guided tour, where you will follow a guide around the island in your own ATV or UTV, or renting an ATV or UTV to explore Aruba at your own pace with your own itinerary.

Important note: The only thing you need to sign up for a tour or rent an ATV or UTV in Aruba is a valid driver’s license!

How to Select an Off-Road Tour Provider in Aruba

With so many options available, selecting the right off-road tour provider in Aruba is crucial for ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience. While we have vetted the ones above, there are many more out there.

Here are some tips to help you choose the best off-road provider.

  • Safety Measures: Prioritize safety. Ensure that the tour provider adheres to safety regulations, provides well-maintained vehicles, and employs experienced and certified guides.
  • Reviews and Testimonials: Read customer reviews and testimonials to get an idea of the experiences of previous participants. Pay attention to feedback on safety, the condition of vehicles, the quality of guides, and the overall satisfaction of customers.
  • Tour Options and Itineraries: Different companies may have unique routes, destinations, and attractions included in their off-road tours. Choose one that aligns with your interests and preferences.
  • Group Size and Atmosphere: Consider the group size on each tour. Some people prefer smaller, more intimate groups for a personalized experience, while others may enjoy the energy of larger groups. Check if the provider offers private tours if you prefer a more exclusive experience.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Choose a tour provider that practices responsible tourism and environmental conservation. Off-road tours can have an impact on delicate ecosystems, so it’s important to support operators committed to minimizing their footprint and preserving the natural beauty of Aruba.
  • Cost and Inclusions: Compare the costs of off-road tours among different providers. Be sure to understand what is included in the price, such as equipment rental, guides, entrance fees to attractions, and any additional amenities. Look for transparent pricing.
  • Cancellation and Refund Policies: Review the cancellation and refund policies of each provider. It’s important to be aware of the terms in case your plans change, and you need to cancel or reschedule your off-road tour.
  • Local Knowledge: Choose a tour provider with guides who have in-depth local knowledge. Guides who can provide insights into Aruba’s history, culture, and natural features enhance the overall experience.
  • Booking Process: Assess the ease of the booking process. A user-friendly and efficient booking system can contribute to a smooth experience from the initial reservation to the actual tour.

And there you have it. You’re ready for UTV tours, Aruba ATV rentals, and beyond!

Around Aruba UTV Tour Review: Go Off-Roading On The Island’s Northern Shore

Published April 19, 2023

Aruba is one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations, and it’s easy to see why! With reliably comfortable weather, beautiful beaches, and good tourism infrastructure, Aruba is hard to beat. The island is one of the most developed and urbanized places in the Caribbean , which makes it an attractive place for many travelers.

aruba self guided utv tour

With that said, going off the beaten path on Aruba is a little tricky. Perhaps the best way to do so is to rent a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) . This will allow you to explore the island’s rugged northern shore, which has no paved roads but provides access to stunning natural desert landscapes. During our recent spring break getaway, two friends and I booked a UTV for a full day with Around Aruba Tours ( website  |  Facebook ). This post is a review of our experience!

Differences Between ATVs and UTVs

  • Rental Requirements & Logistics

California Lighthouse

Druif beach, alto vista chapel, lunch at happy stop, bushiribana gold mill ruins, natural bridge, andicuri beach, ayo rock formations, should you rent a utv for multiple days on aruba, should you book a utv group tour, comparison to an atv rental in 2017, did we consider booking with other companies, utv rental overview.

Off-roading vehicles are popular on Aruba since they provide access to parts of the island that are otherwise inaccessible via rental car. Many companies offer half- and full-day UTV rentals : approximately four and eight hours, respectively. You can also join a tour group or caravan, but I recommend charting your own course (more on why below ).

aruba self guided utv tour

If you want to go off-roading, the first thing you need to decide is whether you want an ATV or a UTV. Essentially, ATVs are smaller and generally designed for one person. UTVs are larger , accommodate two to five people including the driver, and have a covered roof.

aruba self guided utv tour

Since we were a group of three, the UTV made the most sense. It would’ve been much more expensive to rent three individual ATVs, plus the roof on the larger vehicle provided some much-needed shade.

Rental Requirements & Logistics

As of April 2023, a UTV rental from Around Aruba Tours costs 380 USD and requires a 200 USD security deposit that can be temporarily charged to a credit card. Drivers must be above the age of 25 and must possess a valid license. Licenses issued by the United States are accepted.

aruba self guided utv tour

The vehicle was dropped off to our hotel in Noord at 9:00 a.m. on the day we booked. We signed the waiver and put down our deposit. Then, an Around Aruba Tours staff member told us we had to fill up the gas tank at the end of the day. The company returned to our lodging around 5:00 p.m. to pick up the UTV.

Stops on our Self-Guided Tour

The main reason to rent an ATV or UTV is to be able to drive along the dirt trails on the northern side of the island . We started our day at the California Lighthouse and moved down the coast until we reached the Natural Bridge. After that, we turned inland and made our way down to Baby Beach on the southern end of Aruba. Read on to learn more about each stop!

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/california-lighthouse

This iconic lighthouse was the first stop on our trip. It’s located at the northernmost tip of Aruba, and this is one stop on the tour that you can access even if you don’t rent an ATV or UTV.

aruba self guided utv tour

We stopped to take a few pictures of the surrounding landscape, then realized that the lighthouse was actually open for visitors to climb . As of April 2023, it costs 5 USD per person, and they accept card for payment. From the top of the lighthouse, we could see in all directions. Perhaps the best view was looking west towards nearby Arashi Beach.

After coming down from California Lighthouse, we got back in our UTV and left the main paved road. After a short drive southeast, we made our second stop: Druif Beach. We saw lots of other off-roaders parked here, so we also got out for a bit. The waves were pretty rough here, and so was the terrain. This probably isn’t a safe place to swim, but the blue waters and rocky landscapes are really pretty at Druif Beach.

aruba self guided utv tour

The next major attraction is one you won’t want to miss! The Alto Vista Chapel is a famous symbol of Aruba . I love its pastel yellow exterior and orange tile roof. It’s also set in a beautiful location overlooking the ocean with wild cactus growing in the background.

aruba self guided utv tour

Be sure to check out the Peace Labyrinth behind the chapel. After walking around for a bit, we bought some fresh-squeezed fruit juice from a colorful vendor in the parking lot. We finished our refreshments and headed on to the next stop.

I highly recommend getting lunch at Happy Stop, a food truck located right next to the Bushiribana Ruins. It’s basically the only food vendor on Aruba’s north shore . Luckily, the food at Happy Stop was delicious!

aruba self guided utv tour

My friends both got hot dogs, and I ordered a fish sandwich. We also split an order of loaded fries . Everything was phenomenal, especially after a full morning of driving around!

aruba self guided utv tour

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/historic-gold-mines

Along with the California Lighthouse and Alto Vista Chapel, the half-standing remnants of an old gold mill are another well-known landmark located on the coastal UTV trail. In fact, the Bushiribana Ruins can be found on the back side of the ten  Aruban Florin  bill (the local currency).

aruba self guided utv tour

Although a sign is posted at the entrance of the gold mill stating that entry is prohibited, an open doorway is in no way blocked. Lots of other visitors were “inside” the structure, so we also checked it out. Enter at your own risk, I guess. The interior of the ruins has stairs that go up to the top of the façade, which is built into the side of the hill. From here, you’ll have a beautiful panoramic view of the shoreline in both directions.

aruba self guided utv tour

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/natural-bridges

A little ways down the coast from Bushiribana is the Natural Bridge, a naturally-occurring archway made of rock right on the ocean. It’s honestly a little underwhelming, and access to it is blocked for safety reasons.

aruba self guided utv tour

There is a gift and snack shop next to the Natural Bridge, which is a good place to stock up on water or sunscreen.

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/andicuri-beach

This beach was our final stop along Aruba’s northern coast. It didn’t appear possible to continue along the shore from the Natural Bridge to Andicuri, so we backtracked for a while and went all the way around (through Matividiri, along Route 6).

aruba self guided utv tour

This was kind of an adventure because the final road was blocked at  this point  with a sign claiming private property (which we saw other people ignoring, so we did too). We had to park the UTV and walk the rest of the way. After all of that, Andicuri Beach was nice but nothing spectacular. If you want to skip it, I’d say that’s fine.

aruba self guided utv tour

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/rock-formations

We didn’t originally plan to stop at this small trail loop featuring truly massive boulders, but I’m glad we did! Apparently there are petroglyphs on some of the rocks, but I didn’t notice them on our quick walkthrough. Entrance is free, but the trail loop does require some ducking down to squeeze through a few narrow gaps in between the giant stones.

aruba self guided utv tour

Location:  Click or tap for Google Maps link Website:  https://www.aruba.com/us/explore/baby-beach

By the time we were done exploring the Ayo Rock Formations, we had a few hours left of our UTV rental. We wanted to make the most of it, so we drove all the way down to Baby Beach on the southern tip of the island.

aruba self guided utv tour

This was fine, although Baby Beach is absolutely accessible with a regular rental car. If your only vehicle rental on Aruba is a UTV, then by all means take it where you want to go. But if you also plan to rent a car on other days, I recommend using the UTV to focus on the sites between California Lighthouse and Andicuri Beach.

aruba self guided utv tour

Be aware that eight hours is not really enough time to truly circumnavigate the island while hugging the shore. Many rental companies will recommend visiting various attractions all over Aruba, and the truth is you’ll have to prioritize what you want to see. The only way you’d be able to drive all the way around Aruba is if you made minimal stops and each one was very quick. This kind of defeats the purpose of renting an ATV or UTV, in my opinion!

Comments & Evaluation

Overall, our full-day UTV rental from Around Aruba was a great experience! We really enjoyed most of the stops on our route. I’m glad we spent one of our four days on Aruba cruising around the rocky north shore.

aruba self guided utv tour

We didn’t experience any issues with the vehicle such as breakdowns or flat tires. As such, we didn’t need additional assistance from Around Aruba Tours. I can’t speak to whether their service is prompt in the event of a problem, but hopefully it is.

I would say no. An ATV or UTV is best suited to explore the various stops listed in this post. There are a number of reasons why a standard rental car would be a better choice if you just need basic transportation. The main factor is cost : a rental car is significantly cheaper. In addition, UTVs can only be rented for a maximum of eight hours. You would have to return the vehicle each night and pick up a new one in the morning if you wanted it for more than one day.

aruba self guided utv tour

In addition, while UTVs can technically be driven on all paved roads in Aruba, I felt slightly uneasy driving along Route 1, the closest thing to a highway on the island. That’s because other cars were zooming past us at much higher speeds. If you use Route 1 to get to Baby Beach on a UTV, exercise increased caution.

Throughout the day, we passed by many group tours, some with dozens of vehicles. None of them looked especially appealing. The main reason I don’t recommend joining one is that they tend to kick up a lot of dust. All the drivers and passengers have to wear bulky masks to avoid breathing it in. In addition, you probably wouldn’t have control over how long you get at each stop, or even where you would stop.

aruba self guided utv tour

I had been to Aruba one time before this trip, and on that visit I rented a single-person ATV and did a similar tour. I reserved that vehicle with another local company called Roadrunner ATV Rentals. The main difference between then and now is the fact that ATVs and UTVs can no longer enter Arikok National Park , which is further along the north shore than the Natural Bridge.

aruba self guided utv tour

When I rented my ATV in 2017, I believe I ended my day at the Conchi Natural Pool. This time, it was unclear to us whether off-roading vehicles can still go that far south, but we didn’t see any individuals or caravans continuing past the Natural Bridge.

aruba self guided utv tour

I also remember the terrain being much rougher back then. Perhaps six years of traffic have made the dirt paths a little smoother. The UTV probably also had much better suspension than the smaller ATV.

aruba self guided utv tour

Yes, we did. Because of my previous experience with Roadrunner ATV Rentals, I actually reached out to them before booking with Around Aruba Tours. Unfortunately, they wanted drivers to be aged thirty or above to rent a UTV, which none of us are. After further inquiry, they told us that they would need a $1000 deposit.

aruba self guided utv tour

Even though I had a good experience with Roadrunner in 2017, this all seemed a little excessive in 2023. After all, both the age requirement and the deposit for the UTV were significantly more stringent than what’s needed to rent a car on the island. In contrast, Around Aruba Tours offered more reasonable stipulations.

Enjoy your off-roading adventure! 🇦🇼

Ultimately, Around Aruba Tours was a great way to see a side of this island nation that many visitors overlook. Aruba’s dry, rocky landscapes and wild cacti set it apart from other Caribbean islands. Our rental went smoothly, and we really enjoyed a full day of driving around.

aruba self guided utv tour

If you’re headed to Aruba, I hope this blog post provided some helpful insights! Be sure to browse around a bit before booking anything just to make sure the rates you’re paying are reasonable; prices could always change or increase. Have you rented an ATV or UTV on Aruba? Have you been to any of the attractions featured in this post? Leave a comment below and let me know! Thanks for reading and enjoy your journey!

Best way to see the island

The absolute best time ever. Junior, your knowledge and love of your island made us love Aruba even more. We laughed the whole time with some of his stories. The tour was amazing. The scenery was breathtaking. Highly recommend this tour.

Jimmy was funny great guy and he definitely made our trip worth it every single penny I definitely recommend him and another good thing that the group was only 7 double person cars which made it easier faster and felt more private

Fantastic experience

Fantastic experience, we would definitely recommend this adventure to others and our Tour guide JiJi was excellent! Buying ATV goggles (they sell some for 10 USD a pair) or bringing your own is a must in our opinion as the ride was very dusty. Swimming with the fish at the natural pool was also very fun.

Aruba is a beautiful island located in the southern Caribbean Sea. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and friendly locals. There are many activities to do on the island, but one of the most exciting and adventurous ways to explore is by riding an ATV.

Get Ready For An Exhilarating Experience

ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles) are designed to handle rough terrain and provide an exhilarating experience. Riding an ATV around the island is a great way to explore the island’s natural beauty and see some of its hidden gems.

Our Guided ATV Tours & Rentals

One of the best ways to experience the island on an ATV is by joining a guided excursion. This allows you to see all the spots on your list while navigating the island safely without getting lost. You can book a guided ATV excursion and explore the island on your own. The guided tours are led by experienced guides who know the island like the back of their hand. They can take you to all the popular attractions and even to some off-the-beaten-path destinations that are not accessible by car.

  • Natural Pool

One of the popular destination is the Natural Pool, also known as Conchi. This natural pool is located in a remote part of the island and can only be reached by foot, horseback, or ATV. The pool is surrounded by volcanic rocks and offers breathtaking views of the ocean.

Join Delphi Watersports for a Guided ATV Tour

Riding an ATV around Aruba is an adventure that should not be missed. It is a great way to explore parts of the island that are not accessible by car and to experience the island’s natural beauty. Be sure to add this activity to your Aruba itinerary by contacting Delphi Watersports today.
