Azura Itineraries

Azura review, review of azura.

The 2010-built MS Azura cruise ship is one of the Grand-class P&O UK liners, with sistership MS Ventura .

The vessel (IMO number 9424883) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310610000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

P&O Cruises is a subsidiary company and two brands owned by Carnival Corporation - P&O UK and P&O Australia. In 2000, P&O Cruises became subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003. P and O is the world's oldest cruise company, starting passenger shipping operations in 1822 on the routes connecting England with Iberia.

PO Azura cruise ship

The 3100-passenger ship Azura is the second vessel of this size for P&O UK (the first was sister ship Ventura, which was released in 2008). The design of the ship is orientated to the traditional passengers of the fleet. Azura was the first in the fleet to introduce an open-air cinema and 18 single staterooms. The wide cinema screen called SeaScreen is placed in front of the funnel.

Decks and Cabins

P&O Azura staterooms (1557 total, in 35 grades) include 26x Suites, 882x Balconies, 195x Oceanviews, 434x Inside, 2x Family Suites, 18x Studios (single-occupancy cabins). Most cabins are sized 165 ft2 / 15 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 45 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest passenger accommodations are the Aft Penthouse Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Spanning two decks, the Meridian restaurant is one of the ship's main dining rooms, featuring a glass design and a central grand staircase. The restaurant serves good quality food in a sometimes pretty chaotic environment. Breakfast features everything one would expect, from light and healthy options to British fry-up. Lunch is a la carte, including soup, lighter dishes, and pies while afternoon tea serves tasty treats of sandwiches, scones, and cakes. At night the Meridian operates the usual dining system of two sittings, where guests dine each night at the same table. The upper tier is for those who have chosen Freedom Dining, which means you can turn up at any time.

Follows the complete list of Azura restaurants and food bars.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Within twenty-four hours travelers can see passengers dancing together to a band in the atrium twice and dancing sessions featured prominently in the daily schedule. There is always something happening on one of the vessel's 3 dance floors, which include the wooden one in the atrium, that hosts regular dance evenings. Additional amenities include: Complimentary 24-hour Room-Service, Internet/WiFi access, supervised kids programme, laundry/self-serve laundromats.

Other P&O UK cruise ships

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built MS Azura is one of P&O UK's largest vessels, and one of the largest passenger ships on the UK market - along with the fleetmates Ventura  (sistership), Britannia (2015)  and P&O's newest ship Iona (2020) . Azura's Godmother was Darcey Bussell (Dame Darcey Andrea Bussell) - 1969-born British ballet dancer. Ship's Inaugural Cruise/maiden voyage started on March 31, 2010, from the shipyard Monfalcone (Italy) to Southampton England .

P&O Azura (Monfalcone shipyard/hull number 6166) is powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (models 8ZAV40S and 8L46C) generating total power output 67,22 MW.

MV Azura was designed to appeal more to the line's mostly British passengers. The vessel offers a huge selection of balcony staterooms (almost 900 of them, divided into 10 different categories). The ship also features 18 single occupancy cabins, spa cabins (with direct access to the Spa complex), huge-size Atrium with a dance floor in it, open-air theatre (large movie screen in front of the funnel), a total of 11 dining places.

During winter, the ship cruises in the Caribbean leaving roundtrip from homeport  Bridgetown Barbados . Fly-cruise deals from the UK (Southampton) to Bridgetown are also offered. P&O UK's "flight and cruise" deals to the Caribbean are additionally inclusive of discounted airfare to and from Barbados.

In August 2017, Azura became the world's first cruise ship performing gay weddings at sea. P&O UK's wedding packages prices started from GBP 1200. For comparison, Cunard’s ship weddings cost from GBP 2570 (on RMS Queen Mary 2 ) and from GBP 2120 (on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth ). On MS Azura, gay wedding ceremonies are carried out by ship’s Captain, while marriage licenses are issued by Bermuda's Government (as the vessel is flagged/registered in Hamilton Bermuda ).

Among cruiseferries, boat's namesake is the GNV -owned MS Azzurra . Another namesake is the megayacht Emerald Azzurra (2021).

P&O Azura refurbishments review

The ship's drydock 2020 (April 4-16, at Navantia Ferrolane Shipyard in  Ferrol Spain ) was a GBP 20 million project planned mainly for needed repairs and equipment modernization. The project involved 3000 people - 1000 crew, 1500 contractors (employees of companies hired by the shipowner, most from the UK) and 500 local workers (specializing in mechanics, steelworks, painting).

Works included technical and hotel maintenance, general upgrades of public areas (all bars and restaurants) and passenger cabins (beds, bathrooms, lighting, woodwork, decoration). All staterooms and venues received new carpeting and furniture. Four bars now serve draught beers. Some outdoor deck spaces were redesigned to allow alfresco dining.

The ship's drydock in November 2015 (GBP 26 million project) resulted in the following deck plan changes.

  • The vessel received the new P&O livery (on the hull).
  • Added were the new restaurants/venues Sindhu, Glass House, Grab and Go, Costa Coffee.
  • Renovations received the Theatre Lounge, Lido Buffet, Reef Kids Club, Sidewalk Cafe, Spa, Shops, Casino, Champions Bar.
  • New Beach House menu was introduced.

All passenger staterooms received various upgrades.

Have you cruised P and O before  non Xmas?

We've cruised Azura Caribbean  and New Year with the kids

I just remember Christmas decorations on the ship, carols in the atrium. Cant honestly remember Christmas lunch.

To us it was just pretty much cruising as normal. But at Xmas. Not trying to sound downbeat.

No ..we have cruised NCL and RCL .

There will be a pantomime, chocolate/cake village, santa will be in his house, lots of Christmas decorations everywhere, carol concerts, carol singers in the public areas, events will be themed. Santa arrives on deck Christmas eve. The Christmas dinner is an extended traditional menu served on two fixed settings even for freedom diners.

There are a couple of special Christmas themed concerts and performances in the theatre.  Special Christmas themed drinks, cocktails and food are on offer.

On Arcadia we get Xmas gifts and a small Xmas tree in the cabin. Lovely decorations too. Just off Ventura and the decorations up already!

I was on Aurora Christmas 2019. My Christmas Day lunch consisted of a hot dog and fries washed down by a couple of glasses of Rioja out on the open deck. Dinner was a much more grand affair - it was a formal night, and the dinner had seven courses - starter, soup, sorbet, main, dessert and cheese. For the seventh course waiters brought around trays on which were mini mince pies, slices of Christmas cake, dried and candied fruits, nuts, etc. Whatever else, you certainly won't go hungry.

We are also on this cruise. We have done many new year cruises but never Christmas. Looking forward to a Christmas dinner that I haven’t cooked, I’m sure it will be special.

We came off Azura on Saturday after a fantastic 2 week cruise in the Canaries. Left 25 degrees in Tenerife to land in Manchester and be greeted with the Pilot announcing it was 1 degree!!!

Azura is looking very festive, aside from 2020 we have cruised Christmas and New Year for many years as I personally don't like the commercialism that seems to have engulfed it here.

I hope you have a wonderful time, we'll be on Arvia this year. Azura booked for Xmas 2024 & 2025.

We usually take a card for our cabin steward and a little gift (chocolates or biscuits).

Last year we were on Britannia 5-19 November and the decorations were being put up while we were on the cruise. I only wish we had been onboard long enough to also see them taken down in the New Year 🙂

On a New Year 2017 cruise, I can't remember for certain, but I think they started to come down on January 2nd.

We did a Jan 3rd cruise pre covid, and just about all the decorations had been taken down before we boarded, I think a solitary xmas tree lasted a few days before it too was removed

Thanks folks!

Thanks, everyone for your very kind replies . We are on a 2 week cruise but will be coming back on the 28th of December,

For the last three years (excluding covid years) we have done Christmas/New Year cruise on other ships  but this year we will be back home for New Year .

It all looks amazing for Christmas on the Azura .

Which RCL ships ? We sailed Azura last December pre Christmas and for what we paid we knew it wouldn’t be brilliant…..

I wouldn’t do Azura again …. Depends what you want but the lack of drinks and appalling MDR service was the worst parts

We have sailed the NCL Spirit 4 times Christmas/ New Year then after refurbishment it was located to the Far East . Also the Gem, Jade and Pearl and Sun .

Last Christmas/ New Year we were on the Sun ..didn't much like the Sun.. thought we'd try P&0.

RCI .. Brilliance of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas.

If this is your first P&O cruise you will find it quite different to NCL and RCI. We have 10 cruises with NCL and 24 with RCI. We have recently moved to Cunard and P&O for the convenience of cruising from Southampton. For instance P&O have formal nights, although you don’t have to dress up if you are happy to not use the MDR. We have enjoyed the four cruises we have taken with P&O but would probably not cruise on Azura again until she is refurbished.

Thanks, my husband will be packing his dinner suit !!!

This cruise is a chance to get way from the cold UK weather .. we are going with open minds as far as P&0 are concerned .

No NCL or RCI cruise around the Canaries this year.

Best attitude. We found ourselves comparing everything with Celebrity which is our favourite cruise line. Not the way to go. Once we settled down we accepted that they are different cruise lines and both have advantages. Once thing we really appreciated was that the onboard currency is £s. Also that drinks and speciality dining is way more affordable than the US cruise lines.

Looking for some advice from anyone who has cruised over Christmas with P&O recently.

We are on Freedom dining but have to choose a sitting for Christmas Day Dinner.

1st Sitting at 5.30 would be early for us but 2nd Sitting at 8.30 rather late.

Will there be shows that evening ? or other activities planned.

I'm thinking that the 8.30 sitting may take until really late to complete......Thoughts please

As no one else has given you an idea of what happens over Christmas, I'll give an idea. I cannot speak for Azura in the Canaries but I go to the Caribbean for Christmas.  There will be shows in the evening, on Britannia there have always been two fitted in around the dining times.  The dinner does generally take around 2 hours as it is an extended menu.

During the day there will normally be a pantomime - this is generally in the afternoon and  occurs several times during the voyage.  Azura was the second ship in the Caribbean until the pandemic and I have had several Christmas cruises on her.  The crew tried very hard to maintain her reputation as the fun party ship, certainly some of our cruises on her are some of our best Christmas memories.  Obviously her role in the fleet is now different but I would think the fun and games will be the same.

Overall Christmas Day is generally relaxing and treated as such. I'm sure you'll have a great time. Hope that helps.

Thanks

Meant to add Santa Claus and his helpers come on Christmas Eve.  Weather permitting there will be a deck appearance and party hosted by the entertainment team.  Keep your eye out, particularly high up near the funnel ...

Usually happens early evening, 6.00pm or thereabouts out where we are so if you are planning to book any speciality restaurants you might want to keep that time free if you want to join in.

Satellite permitting the big screen will link to the other ships so you can see how it's going in the Caribbean, Norway etc.
