Ultimate Guide to Helicopter Tours in Orlando: Tips & Insights

Imagine soaring above the bustling streets of Orlando, the wind in your hair and a bird’s-eye view of the city’s sparkling attractions below. That’s exactly what I felt on my first helicopter tour in Orlando, and let me tell you, it’s an experience you won’t forget.

From the iconic Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom to the sprawling wetlands and lush landscapes, Orlando’s beauty is unmatched from the skies. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or looking for a new way to see the city, a helicopter tour offers a unique perspective that’s both thrilling and awe-inspiring. Join me as I dive into what makes helicopter tours in Orlando a must-do adventure.

The Thrill of Helicopter Tours

When I first decided to embark on a helicopter tour over Orlando, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Sure, I’d seen the promotional photos and heard others rave about their experiences, but nothing could truly prepare me for the sensation of lifting off the ground and soaring into the sky. From the moment the helicopter’s blades began to whirl and we ascended above the city, I knew I was in for an unforgettable adventure.

Flying over Orlando gave me a perspective I’d never encountered before. The city’s famous attractions , from the iconic Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom to the vast expanses of greenery and water bodies, were suddenly miniaturized beneath me. It was a surreal experience , seeing these places from a bird’s eye view – it made me appreciate the layout and beauty of Orlando in a whole new way.

One thing that stood out during the helicopter tour was the thrill of the experience itself. There’s an indescribable feeling of freedom and excitement when you’re up in the air, looking down at the world below. The helicopter’s nimble movements, able to hover, swoop, and dart in any direction, added an exhilarating dynamic to the sightseeing. It wasn’t just about seeing the sights from above; it was also about feeling the power and agility of the helicopter as we navigated the sky.

The pilot played a significant role in enhancing the experience. With years of flying under their belt, they provided fascinating commentary about each landmark we passed, offering insights I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Their expertise and confidence in maneuvering the helicopter made the experience feel safe and enjoyable, allowing me to soak in every moment without a worry.

Though the thought of a helicopter tour might seem daunting to some, the staff and crew were incredibly reassuring, ensuring everyone felt comfortable before takeoff. The attention to safety, combined with the adrenaline rush of flying, creates a balanced experience that I’d recommend to anyone seeking adventure in Orlando. It’s not every day you get to witness the world from such an extraordinary vantage point.

Throughout the tour, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and appreciation for the beauty of Orlando. The lush landscapes, the glittering lakes, and the bustling theme parks came together in a harmonious blend that could only be truly appreciated from the skies.

Unmatched Views of Orlando’s Attractions

best helicopter tour orlando

Taking to the skies above Orlando in a helicopter, I quickly realized this wasn’t just any tour. It was a journey through the heart of one of the most magical places on earth. As the helicopter’s blades began to whirl, my anticipation grew. The takeoff was smooth, and soon we were ascending higher, offering a bird’s eye view that simply can’t be matched by any ground-based experience.

From this vantage point, Disney World unfolded like a vibrant, sprawling canvas. Each theme park—Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom—was distinguishable, with iconic structures visible from miles away. The Cinderella Castle sparkled in the sun, a beacon for every dreaming heart. Universal Studios offered its own set of wonders, with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter spread out below. I could see Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and even trace the paths of some roller coasters, their cars filled with thrilled adventurers.

Beyond the parks, Orlando’s natural beauty was also on full display. The myriad lakes and lush greenery that make up the landscape were breathtaking. Lake Eola , with its distinctive fountain, seemed like a gem nestled in the city’s heart. Flying over the Everglades , the helicopter’s shadow skimmed over swamps and marshes that are home to Florida’s unique wildlife, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to the man-made wonders nearby.

But it wasn’t just about what I saw; it was about how I felt. There’s a sense of freedom that comes with being high above the ground, a feeling of being untethered from the everyday. The views were panoramic and unobstructed, offering perspectives that were both exhilarating and profoundly moving. It was as if Orlando had shared with me its deepest secrets, ones only visible from the sky.

The pilot played a crucial role in this experience, providing informative commentary that enriched the views with context and history. Learning about the construction of some attractions, the natural history of the area, and even spotting some wildlife in their natural habitats added layers to the experience that I hadn’t expected.

Different Tour Options Available

As I delved deeper into the world of helicopter tours in Orlando, I discovered a variety of options that cater to different interests and budgets. What’s fascinating is how each tour offers its own unique perspective on the city and its attractions, making it hard to choose just one!

One of the first options I came across was the Quick Explorer . This tour is perfect for those who are short on time but still want to catch a glimpse of Orlando from above. Lasting about 5-10 minutes, it typically covers the downtown skyline and a few nearby attractions. It’s a great teaser and definitely leaves you wanting more.

For those looking for a more comprehensive experience, the Grand Tour is a must. Spanning over 25 minutes, this trip encompasses not only the major theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios but also flies over scenic lakes and lush landscapes. The pilot’s commentary throughout the journey adds an informative touch, making it a learning experience as well.

For adventure seekers and romantic souls alike, the Sunset Tour offers an unforgettable experience. Watching the sun dip below the horizon and paint the sky in shades of pink and orange, all while flying over Orlando’s beautiful attractions, is truly magical.

If you’re someone who appreciates the finer details, the VIP Tours might catch your eye. These tours allow for customization and offer a more intimate experience, including options like champagne onboard and longer flight times. It’s the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion or simply treat yourself to an extraordinary day out.

Finally, for those interested in getting up close with nature, the Everglades Adventure stands out. This longer flight takes you out of the city and over Florida’s famous wetlands, offering a chance to see wildlife and the unique ecosystem from a whole new perspective.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the tour options:

I’m leaning towards mixing and matching a couple of these tours to get the full spectrum of experiences on offer.

Safety Measures and Precautions

As I navigate through the exciting world of helicopter tours in Orlando, it’s vital to talk about the one aspect that ensures we all get to enjoy these incredible experiences with peace of mind: safety measures and precautions. I’ve done some digging and consulted with a few tour operators to bring you the most up-to-date insights on how they prioritize our safety above the skies.

When it comes to helicopter tours, pilot expertise is non-negotiable. I was pleased to learn that the pilots are not only FAA-certified but also undergo rigorous additional training specific to the tours they conduct. This means they’re not just skilled in flying; they’re experts at navigating Orlando’s unique airspace, weather conditions, and the specific routes of our chosen tours.

Maintenance and Inspection are words that came up time and again in my conversations with tour operators. Helicopters are meticulously maintained to meet, and often exceed, FAA standards. Each aircraft undergoes pre-flight checks before every single tour, ensuring everything from the rotors to the radio is in perfect working order. It’s comforting to know the level of detail that goes into keeping these machines safe.

Tour operators also emphasize the importance of passenger preparedness . Before takeoff, you’ll be briefed on safety procedures, including how to use your headset, where to find life vests on water-bound routes, and the proper way to board and exit the helicopter safely. I’ve always found these briefings not only informative but also immensely reassuring.

Interestingly, many operators have implemented COVID-19 safety measures . This includes mandatory mask-wearing for passengers and crew, frequent sanitization of high-touch areas within the helicopter, and reduced capacity tours to ensure social distancing can be maintained as much as possible. It’s clear that safety isn’t just about the flight itself but also about the overall health and well-being of everyone involved.

Lastly, I learned about weather-dependent scheduling . Helicopter tours in Orlando are subject to weather conditions to ensure the safety of the flight. This means tours can be rescheduled due to bad weather, which, while potentially disappointing, illustrates the operators’ commitment to safety over profits.

In sum, the safety protocols surrounding helicopter tours in Orlando are comprehensive and designed to ensure that every flight is as safe as it is exhilarating. It’s evident that a lot of care and expertise goes into making these tours an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons.

Planning Your Perfect Helicopter Tour Experience

best helicopter tour orlando

When I decided to take the plunge and book a helicopter tour in Orlando, I was swamped with options and details. I quickly realized that a bit of planning could make the difference between a good experience and an unforgettable adventure. So, here’s how I went about planning my perfect helicopter tour, which might just help you do the same.

Firstly, I spent some time researching the different tour operators in Orlando. I found that while many offered similar routes, the duration and what was included varied significantly. I made a point to look for FAA-certified operators with stellar safety records, which gave me peace of mind knowing I’d be in good hands.

Choosing the right time of day for the flight was another critical decision. Mornings tend to have less turbulence and clearer skies, providing the best conditions for photography. However, I found that sunset tours offered breathtaking views of Orlando bathed in golden light, making for an utterly magical experience.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key considerations for planning:

  • Operator Safety Record: Ensure they’re FAA-certified.
  • Time of Day: Morning for clear conditions, sunset for magical views.
  • Tour Length: Ranges from 15 minutes to over an hour.
  • Points of Interest: Choose based on what you want to see, from theme parks to natural landscapes.

Booking in advance was a no-brainer for me. Not only did it guarantee my spot, but it also often came with a small discount. Furthermore, I made sure to call ahead and clarify any details like the check-in process and what I should bring along. Most operators recommended sunglasses, cameras, and sometimes even provided jackets for colder days.

On the day of the tour, I arrived early, eager and a bit anxious about the experience ahead. The staff were incredibly welcoming, walking me through a brief safety demonstration and answering any last-minute questions I had. Their professionalism and enthusiasm only added to my excitement.

As our helicopter gently lifted off the ground, I knew all the planning was worth it. The views of Orlando’s iconic landmarks and lush landscapes from above were nothing short of awe-inspiring. Every moment, from the smooth takeoff to the gentle landing, was a testament to the meticulous preparation and expertise of the crew.

Embarking on a helicopter tour in Orlando truly is a bucket list experience. From the meticulous planning to the rush of taking off, every moment is crafted to awe. I’ve shared tips on selecting the best tour operators and the significance of safety and scheduling. But it’s the breathtaking views and the professionalism of the crew that elevate this adventure. If you’re looking for an unforgettable way to see Orlando, a helicopter tour checks all the boxes. Just remember to book early and prepare for an exhilarating journey above one of the most magical places on earth.

Soaring Over Orlando: The Ultimate Guide to Helicopter Tours 2024

By James | Last updated January 2, 2024

This page may contain compensated affiliate links. Please read the Disclaimer for more information

Orlando is a great destination if you are thinking of taking a helicopter ride with around five companies offering helicopter tours of all of the Central Florida theme parks .

The Orlando/Kissimmee area is home to a wide range of attractions, from world-famous theme parks to natural wonders. Some of the most popular attractions include Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, Gatorland and the Kennedy Space Center.

The area is also home to several celebrities and is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including lakes, forests and wetlands.

Helicopter tours are an excellent way to see the region’s highlights and there are many different tour options to choose from.

If you have never flown on a helicopter tour before, be sure to read our main Florida Helicopter Tours page with information on the different types of helicopters, general tips, preparing for your flight, during the flight, capturing memories and FAQs.

Viator offers nearly 30 different helicopter tours in Florida, in places like Orlando, Miami, Tampa and St. Augustine. You can reserve your tour today and then pay when you are ready. On many tours, you can even cancel for free up to 24 hours before the tour starts.

Why not book your helicopter tour today?

Throughout the flight, many of the pilots will act as your guide, providing a commentary on the sights as you pass them by.

The helicopter operators in the Orlando area are mainly based around International Drive and US 192 (Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway) in Kissimmee with MaxFlight located at Kissimmee Gateway Airport.

Destinations include Old Town, Gatorland, Disney Springs, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney’s Wide World of Sports, SeaWorld, Aquatica, Discovery Cove , Universal Studios Florida, Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay.

Orlando helicopter ride prices vary primarily on flight time and time of day. Expect to pay between $35 per person for a single park like SeaWorld, around $65 for either Disney or SeaWorld and Universal and from $125 to $200 to take in all the parks.

Note that since 9/11 there is a ban from actually flying below 3,000 feet at Walt Disney World . This means helicopter operators tend to skirt around the outside of the theme parks but flying past the theme parks still gives you a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the inner workings of the attractions and the different lands.

You can even fly over the Butler Chain of Lakes and some of the celebrity homes in the Orlando area or take a flight to Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic coast, home of the space programme.

Once you are airborne you quickly appreciate just how flat Central Florida is and how many lakes there are.

One highlight is the evening flights that coincide with the theme park fireworks displays. What better way to watch the amazing laser, light and firework shows, though you can expect to pay more if you fly at night.

Remember that each helicopter operator flies from a different location and flight times (and hence prices) to reach a particular attraction will vary depending upon the location of their heliport.

1. Introduction Flight Tours

For those who have never flown in a helicopter before, a short 2 to 3-minute introduction flight is a great way to enjoy this unique form of transport. For just $15 per person, you can take a 4-mile flight along the US 192 highway in Kissimmee, offered by Leading Edge Helicopters .

2. Theme Park Tours

These tours are the most popular and take you over the area’s famous theme parks, including Walt Disney World and the Universal Orlando Resort.

For $35 to $45 you can fly over one of Central Florida’s theme parks or resorts like Fun Spot America, Disney Springs , SeaWorld or Universal. Tour time is typically between 5 and 10 minutes and these tours are offered by all the local helicopter operators.

If you want to see all the theme parks, then most operators offer a scenic “grand tour” that takes you over all the major theme parks including Disney, Universal and SeaWorld.

These tours last between 18 and 30 minutes and cost between $150 and $198 per person.

3. City Tours

City tours offer an all-round view of Orlando and Kissimmee, allowing you to see the downtown areas, stadiums, hotel resorts and other landmarks.

MaxFlight Helicopter Services offers a 25 to 30-minute tour of all the theme parks including downtown Orlando both during the daytime and at night.

4. Sunset & Night Tours

Night tours offer a unique perspective on the area’s illuminated skyline and theme parks.

A couple of the operators, Orlando Helicopter Adventures and MaxFlight Helicopter Services fly nighttime tours. The cost is around $225 to $235 per person for a 25 to 30-minute flight over Orlando and the theme parks at night. Some flights are organised to coincide with the 9 p.m. fireworks shows.

5. Wildlife & Eco Tours

Wildlife tours take you over the area’s lakes and wetlands, where you’ll be able to spot alligators, birds and other wildlife.

A couple of the operators fly over some of Central Florida’s lakes like the Butler Chain of Lakes, Lake Tohopekaliga, and Lake Conway as part of their theme park tours.

MaxFlight Helicopter Services fly a special Eco tour over Lake Tohopekaliga and its varied wildlife. Flight time is around 15 minutes and costs $95 per person.

No matter which tour you choose, you’re sure to have a memorable experience. Orlando helicopter tours are an excellent way to see the Orlando/Kissimmee area in a whole new way and they’re suitable for visitors of all ages.

The length of helicopter tours in the Orlando/Kissimmee area typically ranges from 10–30 minutes, depending on the route. During your tour, you can expect to see a variety of landmarks and attractions from above, including theme parks, downtown areas and natural scenery. All tours include a pre-flight safety briefing and with some, the opportunity to take photos with the helicopter after the tour.

In addition to standard tours, there are also speciality tours and packages available. For example, some companies offer private tours for couples or small groups, allowing you to customize your route and experience. Other packages may include a combination of helicopter and other activities, such as a sunset dinner cruise or a visit to a theme park. Some companies also offer transportation to and from your hotel or other designated location.

An alternative way of getting aloft in Central Florida is the Characters in Flight tethered balloon at Disney Springs.

Orlando Helicopter Tour Operators

Orlando is a great destination if you are thinking of taking a helicopter ride with around five companies offering helicopter tours of all of the Central Florida theme parks.

They are mainly based around International Drive and US 192 (Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway) in Kissimmee with MaxFlight located at the Kissimmee Gateway Airport.

Destinations include Old Town, Fun Spot America and Kissimmee, Gatorland, Disney Springs, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom , Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney’s Wide World of Sports, SeaWorld, Aquatica, Discovery Cove, Universal Studios Florida, Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay.

Expect to pay between $35 per person for a single park like SeaWorld, around $65 for either Disney or SeaWorld and Universal and up to $200 to take in all the parks.

Note that since 9/11 there is a ban from actually flying below 3,000 feet over Walt Disney World. This means helicopter operators tend to skirt around the edges of the Disney theme parks but flying past the theme parks still gives you a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the inner workings of the attractions and the different lands.

One highlight is the evening flights that often coincide with the theme park fireworks displays. What better way to watch the amazing laser, light and firework shows though you can expect to pay more if you fly at night.

All Orlando helicopter operators fly either the Robinson R44 (3 passengers) and/or the Robinson R66 (4 passengers). It’s important to note that the types of helicopters flown by these tour operators may vary depending on availability and other factors, so it’s always a good idea to check with the operator directly for the most up-to-date information.

All prices are per person and exclude taxes and gratuities.

Last Tips on Helicopter Tours in Orlando

A great part about an Orlando helicopter tour in getting around the area is the thrilling adventure along with the different perspective you get during this once-in-a-lifetime experience. While most people approach the tour with excitement, we also have to remember that it may be a new activity for most passengers, which means there will most definitely be nervous jitters.

Read on as we’ll list down everything that you need to remember to prepare yourself and your family for an unforgettable helicopter tour around Orlando.

Picking the Right Heli Tour: When booking an Orlando air tour, you need to make sure that you find out where the seats will be facing. Helicopters that have seats facing forward will give you the greatest views plus they make it easier for you to enjoy sights together with everybody else that’s with you on the tour. A forward-facing seat can help as well with passengers that may suffer from motion sickness as they can simply sit back, relax and enjoy a fun ride.

Dressing Comfortably and Appropriately: Safety is always at the forefront of the minds of passengers when embarking on a tour in the sky. This means outfits for the tour should be both comfortable and appropriate for the activity. Although dressing stylish is recommended as well so you will look gorgeous on your pre-flight photos, you’d also want to prioritize your safety and comfort. It's best to leave your scarves, hats and other accessories in a storage locker at the facility of the helicopter tour company or in your car as they are going to be blown away. Do you have long hair? If so, then you need to pull it back in order to avoid tangles. Also, remember that you should wear close-toed flat shoes.

Understanding Seating Arrangements: Naturally, you will want to sit in the best seat to enjoy your Orlando helicopter ride. You also will most likely want to sit right next to your significant other. Although most tour companies will try to honor your preferences, loading a helicopter in the correct manner is essential, especially as the helicopter needs to have a balanced weight on all sides. When you are boarding the helicopter, you will be shown where you should sit based on the balance and weight of the vehicle. If you are not going to be seated next to your friend or partner, then don’t worry. You can still communicate and enjoy an optimum helicopter experience.

Getting the Perfect Shot: Cameras and mobile phones will be allowed onboard helicopter tours around Orlando, Florida. Helicopter tour companies also encourage passengers to snap away as you’re bound to get amazing shots while soaring over incredible sights and landmarks throughout Central Florida. In order to eliminate glare from cameras on the windows, we suggest you consider dressing in a dark color since a lighter hue will be reflected in the glass of the helicopter. Also, plan the trip as there are certain times where it’s best to take pictures. This is typically mid-morning up until early afternoon. Those hours provide the clearest of views since no morning fog will be present. The sun won’t be giving off strong rays either.

Relaxing and Going with the Flow: From the moment you arrive for an Orlando helicopter tour, every single aspect has already been planned so you’ll have an unforgettable and seamless helicopter tour experience. Before you board the helicopter, you will get a chance to watch a safety video where you will learn how to ride the aircraft correctly. The crew that will be assigned to help you will lead you and your companions to your seats. They also will make sure you’re safe and secured prior to taking off. It’s very normal to feel nervous. Just pay attention to pre-flight prep as that can help you feel confident when you board the helicopter.

So Which Tour Is The Right Helictopter Tour?

Ultimately, there are a few helicopter tours in the Orlando/Kissimmee area you COULD choose from, but (after copious feedback from our many, MANY guests over the years - and some personal excursions of our own!) we really like the approach taken by ORLANDO HELI-TOURS, Florida's Premier Helicopter Operations & Touring Company (locations listed above).

With many featured tour offerings to fit any taste/budget, and the highest level of safety and service in Orlando, FL for any heli-tour company, they're also the only helicopter tour company with scenic flights that are also air-conditioned. Tour in one of their Robinson R44 or R66 helicopters and experience the Orlando Heli-Tour difference for yourself. Whether you choose to fly over Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney, Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, or Florida’s amazing Butler Chain of Lakes, breathtaking views and new adventures are just over the horizon!

If you’re looking for a place to stay that’s close to the action, Westgate’s Orlando resorts are just minutes away.
