Each of the Cairns snorkelling boats offers something slightly different: which is usually regarding where they go, what you get in conjunction with your tour price and how long you are at the reef. Picking the ‘right’ Cairns snorkelling tour for you is often a difficult decision to make. That’s why we’ve written this page. Cairns is the closest city to the Great Barrier Reef. Each day hundreds of excited people head out on boats to experience the reef for themselves. Some go to islands and sand cays; others go to outer reefs where you can snorkel directly from the boat, or moor up and spend the day on a reef pontoon. Everyone has expectations and aspirations for their day at the reef. What they want to see and do. The good news is, there are no bad Cairns snorkelling tours. Our city and its reef operators are tourism experts. They want you to have a good time. The bad news is it can be hard to know which boat / tour is the one for you – so let’s break it down, look at the options, considerations and different destinations.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Snorkel Tour

Swimming Ability / Confidence.

This is a big one. If you are a confident, capable swimmer who is happy about the idea of snorkelling in the open ocean, which sometimes has waves and currents, then all of the Cairns snorkelling tours are open to you. Every boat provides life jackets and buoyancy devices. If this does not sound like you, and you have some concerns and/or fears about this – and don’t worry, you are not alone – then you should choose one of the Cairns snorkelling tours that visits an island or pontoon. More on this in the location section below. This will ensure you have a great day enjoying the reef, rather than (potentially) fighting your fears. A reef trip should be fun, not challenging.

Who Are You Seeing The Reef With.

Another big one. Especially for families. Just because you might be a confident and capable swimmer, who will make the most of their in-water snorkel time, does not mean everyone else in your group is. So, if your group has a combination of swimming skills, abilities and ages, then you should consider an outer reef pontoon or island tour, or pick a boat that includes glass bottom boat tours as a part of their experience. This will ensure everyone in your crew will be able to see and enjoy the reef. Side note – in doing this, you are not compromising on what you will see – all of the snorkelling sites are excellent, you are just ensuring everyone has the chance to experience the reef.

Where Are You Staying.

Cairns snorkelling tours depart from Marlin Marina, which is in the city itself – between the Pier Shopping Centre Complex, Harbour Lights and Cairns Hilton Hotel, walking distance from the Cairns Esplanade, Cruise Liner Terminal and Casino. If you are staying in Cairns city or on the northern beaches, including Trinity Beach and Plam Cove, then you have over 20 Cairns snorkelling tours to choose from. If you are staying in Port Douglas, then you should choose one of the 10 Port Douglas snorkelling tours. These tours visit a range of outer reef sites, where you can snorkel directly from the boat, or moor up and spend the day on a reef pontoon – some of them visit Low Isles. South of Cairns, you can visit Frankland Islands or Mission Beach for snorkelling tours.

What Time Of Year Are You Visiting.

This is less critical. The Great Barrier Reef is amazing at all times of the year. The one factor that does change is the water temperature. In Cairns’ cooler months – May to October – the water temps range between 23 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius. For Cairns divers this is cold, and the boats provide 3-5mm wetsuits for guests. From November to April the water is usually between 26 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius – so we swap wetsuits for sunsuits, which provide UV protection. You will generally see the same things no matter what time of year you visit, with the exception of the annual migration of Dwarf Minke Whales (June – July) and Coral Spawning (October / November).

What Other Activities Are Included / Available.

This section relates to ‘what you get’ in conjunction with your tour price. All of the Cairns snorkelling tours include the boat ride to and from the reef / island, lunch, snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel and fins) and buoyancy devices. Beyond that, some tours include other activities and inclusions in their tour price, such morning and afternoon tea, glass bottom boat rides, semi-submersible tours and marine biologist talks – and all of the pontoons have underwater observatories. Most tours also have other activities you can purchase in addition to your tour price: including introductory scuba diving (no experience necessary), certified scuba diving and guided snorkel tours. Tour Prices and Inclusions

Tour price is always a consideration. Generally speaking the pontoon tours are more expensive than the boat and island tours, but they do have a lot more inclusions. Other than the boat ride and pontoon, there’s glass bottom boat tours, semi-submersible tours, underwater observatories and fish feeding. The snorkelling here is from the pontoon, using lowered steps to enter the water and snorkel over the adjacent coral gardens. Visibility is usually very good. The island tours are generally the cheapest and most of the snorkelling is done from the beach. The reef at the islands is fringing reef and underwater visibility can vary, with the tides and current. On the outer reef boats, you are snorkelling in the open ocean at various reef sites; the coral cover is diverse and visibility is usually very good.

All ages and abilities can – and should – visit the reef, it’s just beautiful. Most overheard comment we hear on the boats is, ‘it’s like being in an aquarium’. We’ve taken our elderly relatives and our son, from when he was just 6 months old – well younger really, I snorkeled throughout my pregnancy with him. Ethan's Thoughts. Snorkelling From A Kid's Perspective

When I first started snorkelling, I was 4 years and 4 months old. My parents took me on Sunlover and we went to their reef pontoon. When I was snorkelling, I had to wear a life jacket (of course) and got a lot of saltwater in my eyes. I found it really difficult and I didn’t really enjoy the snorkelling, but I did enjoy everything else about my visit to the reef. I really enjoyed the glass bottom boat and just having fun on the boat. As I continued to go on more trips and got a bit older, the snorkelling got easier for me, because I knew how to keep the water out of my eyes and I was a better swimmer. My first big accomplishment was when I got to take my life jacket off, when I was a confident swimmer. This was much better, as I could move in the water more easily. As I got bigger, the boats had wetsuits to fit me, which was great as I used to get cold in the water and then I didn’t anymore. I really started to enjoy snorkelling when I was around 6 or 7 years of age and was jumping off the sides of the boats too, which was really fun. The favourite things I saw when snorkelling was spaghetti corals, turtles and nemos – I especially loved snorkelling with the reef sharks with ABC Snorkel Charters at Port Douglas. By the time I was 9 I loved snorkelling and diving down to get closer to the reef. My parents were scuba divers, so were really good in the water and were able to support me and show me the way to be in the water and on the reef. When I turned 10 I became one of the lucky kids who learned to dive on the Great Barrier Reef .

Cairns Snorkelling Locations

Cairns snorkelling locations, and we’re talking about Cairns’ Great Barrier Reef snorkel tour locations and destinations, include outer reefs, reef pontoons, islands and sand cays. If you are wondering about snorkelling from the beach in Cairns, at say Palm Cove or Trinity Beach, you can do it, but there is not much to see. All of Cairns’ snorkelling tours take you offshore to reef destinations. The outer reefs are so named for their proximity to the edge of the Continental Shelf. They take longer to get too, but the visibility is usually excellent with diverse corals and marine life. The pontoons are bit closer, most are located on Moore Reef, but again visibility is usually excellent as is coral cover and the marine life you will see. There’s two island destinations (more on this below) which allow you to combine snorkelling with land-based exploration and activities and two sand cays. All of these Cairns snorkelling locations offer different experiences, which we dive into below.

Outer Reefs.

Cairns snorkelling tours visit a range of outer reefs, including Norman, Saxon, Hastings, Flynn, Milln, and Pellowe Reef. Each reef has a number of moorings and each tour operator is licensed to use specific moorings. They do not all go to the same reefs and moorings / sites, but all offer similar experiences. Snorkelers enter the water from lowered platforms / steps on the boat, swimming out into the open ocean to explore coral gardens that rise to within meters from the surface. Pending the tide, you will be swimming just above the reef and in some instances, the coral emerges from the water at low tide. Visibility is usually excellent, as is the diversity of coral and marine life. These destinations take longer to get too and being the open ocean, there are sometimes waves and currents. Boat capacity to the outer reef varies but is generally no more than 150 guests per boat.

Reef Pontoons.

Reef pontoons are also called activity platforms. These are large platforms which are permanently moored at the reef, most of them are located at Moore Reef. The platforms can have one or two levels, all have a combination of shaded seating and sundecks, as well as showers and change rooms. If you choose a reef pontoon as your preferred destination for a Cairns snorkel tour, then water entry is via submerged platforms and steps and while you are still swimming in the open ocean, you are in a protected lagoon-type area of the reef, which has less current and waves. There are also resting stations located across the snorkelling area. The reef pontoon tours include a range of additional activities in their tour price, including glass bottom boat tours, underwater observatories and semi-submersible tours. The pontoons accommodate a couple of hundred people.

Tropical Islands.

Green and Fitzroy Islands are the main island destinations for Cairns snorkelling tours. Green Island has sandy beaches and rainforest growth, which you can explore on boardwalks. Snorkelling is directly off the beach. Most snorkelling tours to Green Island include a glass bottom boat tour. Many boats go to Green Island and during the day, several hundred people can be there. Fitzroy Island is a continental island. It has mountainous terrain which you can explore on the Lighthouse walk or Summit walk. Snorkelling is directly off the beach – its Nudey Beach was named Australia’s best beach in 2018 – the beaches near the jetty are made of coral rubble, which is hard underfoot. Less boats go here, so day visitors are usually a few hundred people. Both islands have resorts on them, with bar and bistro facilities. The islands are closer to Cairns, so you get there quicker than the pontoons and outer reef destinations.

Sand cays are ‘pretty as a picture’ – little beacons of white sand that emerge from the sea and are surrounded by azure waters. You can’t help but want to be on them, to sit in the shallows and have the waves lap at your feet. There are two sand cay destinations – Michaelmas Cay, which has lots of birdlife, and Upolu Cay which is only seen at low tide. In terms of ‘where do sand cays ‘sit’ in the scheme of Cairns snorkelling tours’, I would say they are in between the pontoons, islands and outer reefs. Like the islands, you are standing on firm ground and snorkelling off a beach. Like the pontoons, you are on the reef and the coral cover and marine life is more diverse. Like the outer reef sites, the boats that visit the sand cays carry less people (than pontoon and island boats).

Liveaboard Boats.

Liveaboard boats provide you with the opportunity to extend your Cairns snorkelling tour over two or more days. The liveaboard boats traverse the waters of the outer reefs, taking you to several different moorings and reef sites during your time at sea with them. Regarding the pros and cons of the liveaboard boats as a destination, they are the same as the outer reef sites already covered above, except there are less people on them. Also, if you book 2 nights or more, you will have entire days where you can snorkel, eat, sleep and repeat, maximizing your time to experience and explore the reef. Accommodation on liveaboard boats is usually double, twin or quad share, all meals and snorkel equipment are included in the tour price.

Again, there is no ‘best boat’ as such. There are several award winning boats and tour operators, there are family owned tours which pride themselves on customer service, there are boats that go to islands, pontoons and the outer reef. The question to ask is ‘what boat is best for me?’ and hopefully you can find that answer with our tips and information.

Which is the best Cairns reef for snorkelling?

The best Cairns reef for snorkelling for us personally, are the outer reef destinations, Fynn, Milln, Moore, Pellowe and Thetford Reef. That being said, we are confident and experienced snorkelers in the open ocean. For the islands, the fringing reef around Green Island offers good snorkelling and the chance to see sea turtles, especially on the reef adjacent to the beach, next to the jetty. (The one without lifeguards). Fitzroy Island has good fringing reef too, especially at the ‘headlands’, either end of the beach facing towards Cairns.

What’s the best time to go snorkelling in Cairns?

Every month is a good month to go snorkelling in Cairns. The boats leave every day.

What will I see snorkelling from Cairns?

What you will see snorkelling from Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef includes colourful corals, giant clams, bright butterflyfish and patterned parrotfish. These are all guaranteed to be seen, when you go on a Cairns snorkelling tour. We’ve seen them on every single snorkelling tour we’ve been on, and we’ve been on every boat, many times over many years. Beyond that, it’s a natural environment, so things like turtles and reef sharks and Nemo are not always a given, but they are there and we do see them. Other reef fish you might see snorkelling from Cairns includes bat fish, barracuda, chromis, wrasse, Moorish idols, snapper, puffer fish, triggerfish, rabbitfish, scissor-tail sergeant, yellow tailed fusiliers and more. There’s also sea cucumbers, star fish, blue spotted stingrays and reef sharks.

Is it better to go snorkelling from an island or Cairns reef?

If you are confident snorkelling in the open ocean, then snorkelling on a Cairns reef is better than an island, in our opinion. However, if you are not confident, then definitely choose a pontoon or island tour, because the snorkelling is still fantastic and you have the comfort of entering the water from the beach or on a lowered platform. We have seen people who are not confident, try to push themselves on outer reef sites and end up having a less than awesome day. Pick the location and conditions that match your confidence levels and you will have the best time.

Is Cairns snorkelling safe for children and families?

Yes – Cairns snorkelling is safe for children and families, but pick your trip to suit your family too. We started snorkelling with our son when he was 4 years old. Obviously, life jacket, buoyancy device and around 2000% parent contribution, but we wanted to get him used to snorkelling on the reef, in saltwater, because we live here and love it. Heads up for parents – based on our experience – the first years / times (based on age and experience) are tough. All children – I think anywhere from 4 years to 10 years (pending experience) will find saltwater in the mouth and possibly eyes (from leaking mask) ‘difficult’. If they are not confident in the water to boot, then don’t push them. There are glass bottom boat tours, semi-submersible tours and island trips, where they can stand-up if they are having an problems. In terms of safety, the actual question should be ‘is swimming safe for children and families’ – because yes it is, if you do the lessons and gain the confidence and skills to be safe.

If I can’t swim, can I snorkel?

Honestly, no. In our opinion – and experience – having been on the boats and watched people try – if you can’t swim, you shouldn’t really snorkel. Yes, the boats have floatation devices. Yes, you can have in-water assistance. Some people are OK with that – lots of people are not. If you want to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, then you should learn to swim (and swim in the ocean, with waves) before you come. If that is not an option, then there are other ways you can experience the reef. Glass bottom boat tours are great. So are semi-submersibles and underwater observatories. The islands provide the opportunity to enter the water to your own comfort levels. You can also see fish feeding and the marine life, from the jetty. Plan ahead and pick your trip / tour, based on realistic assessments of what you feel comfortable and confident doing.

There is no right or wrong answer here. The best Cairns snorkelling tour is the one that has the best destination and inclusions to deliver you the best experience, based on your individual skills, capabilities and interests. What if it’s raining? Is Cairns snorkelling still worth it?

Yes – 100% yes – if it is raining in Cairns, snorkelling is still worth it. Here are the facts. Who cares if it is raining, you get wet when snorkelling anyway. The Great Barrier Reef is an aquatic environment, it thrives with the addition of water. The marine life do not change their behavior under the water, if it is raining above the surface. Finally, just because it is raining in Cairns, it does not mean it will be raining the reef. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t but irrespective you should still do it.

Is snorkelling better from Cairns or Port Douglas?

Honestly, it depends where you go and who you go with. There are excellent snorkelling trips from Cairns and Port Douglas – in fact Port Douglas has the best rated snorkel trip in Australia, based on Trip Advisor Reviews (ABC Snorkel Charters Port Douglas), based on the boat, tour and experience. We would say this, if you are staying in Port Douglas, go on a Port Douglas snorkelling tour. If you are staying in Cairns, go on a Cairns snorkelling tour. Both towns have fantastic Great Barrier Reef sites and better to spend your time travelling to the reef – rather than between towns and then the reef.

What’s the worst Cairns snorkelling tour?

The worst Cairns snorkelling tour is the one you take, that doesn’t match your skills, experience and expectation levels. Do your research, be honest on your own comfort levels, skills and abilities – and that of your family / friends, if you are travelling with them – and book a Cairns snorkelling tour that ticks the right boxes, in regard to destination and inclusions, for you. Perry has been in the dive industry in Cairns and managing dive operations on 4 vessels since 1988, including Ocean Free since 1992, when he met Taryn. Since 1992 they both worked the boats and purchased Ocean Free (a 16.5m schooner) in 1996. Having many years of experience in the industry, Ocean Free quickly became a well-established and respected company amongst local agents and the marine industry.

They then bought their second vessel Ocean Freedom in 2005 and after a year’s total refurbishment, the luxury 20m cruiser was launched in mid 2006. Ocean Freedom underwent another million-dollar refurbishment in February 2008, changing from the previous jet engines to props, re-spraying, extending the teak snorkel and dive deck by 3m, making it the most spacious snorkel back deck in Cairns. The new look, faster Ocean Freedom receives great reviews in the industry. Ocean Freedom now cruises at 23 knots and arrives at the reef in an hour, giving guests 6 hours on the reef.

With the operation of two vessels it was necessary to re-brand the products to encompass the two vessels under one trading name. This, plus the company’s commitment to running very personalised, low guest number tours with excellent customer service, lead to their new company name Cairns Premier Reef & Island Tours.

In 2014 both boats underwent major, million-dollar refurbishments, with new engines, decking, seating, bulkheads and on Ocean Free new mast rigging and sails. In mid 2023 Ocean Free was fitted with a new propeller and Ocean Freedom had another  major refurbishment with 2 new engines, new electrics, new ladder, cushions, and carpet.

Snorkeling Cairns: The Best Great Barrier Reef Tours

On my first trip to Australia I only had one must-do activity on my list: Go Snorkeling on a Great Barrier Reef Cruise. I had snorkeled in the Caribbean Sea while visiting St. Maarten, at Captain Cook in Kona, Hawaii and in the lagoons surrounding Moorea, French Polynesia – and I wasn’t leaving Australia without taking a Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling Tour!

Cairns Great Barrier Reef Tours

There are numerous Cairns Great Barrier Reef Tours that transport passengers to the outer reefs to snorkel. Most full-day Great Barrier Reef trips follow the same schedule: early departure, multiple snorkeling spots, lunch, water and coffee throughout the day.

However, not all cruises from Cairns offer the same reef experience. Some barrier reef tours offer indulgent lunches on sleek boats, while other Cairns cruises only offer the basics. Additionally, there are full-day and half-day snorkeling Cairns tours.

Booking Cairns Snorkeling Tours

As budget-conscious travelers, we were most interested in an economical Cairns Great Barrier Reef snorkel tour that visited multiple sites. We were not overly concerned with the type of boat, the kind of food served or other on-board amenities.

The ‘extras’ can enhance the experience of barrier reef cruises, but at a cost. With a little more room in our Cairns, Australia Budget , we would have factored those points into our decision. However, we were simply looking for cheap Great Barrier Reef tours that allowed us time to swim with the fish in multiple spots.

We waited to book our Cairns tour until we arrived in the city – which probably would have been a mistake in the high season. Our visit, however, was in August, which is the middle of Australia’s winter when Great Barrier Reef holidays are not in great demand.

The day before we wanted to go, we went to the Cairns pier where the Great Barrier Reef snorkeling tours depart and asked around for itineraries and prices. In hindsight, we did not need to waste time going to the docks; we would have been better off reading reviews and booking one of the Great Barrier Reef tours from Cairns online. 

Snorkeling Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Australia

On the day of our Cairns to Great Barrier Reef trip, the ocean was flat and clouds hung in the sky. It was a perfect day. The conditions were optimal for the best snorkeling Great Barrier Reef experience. The crew claimed it was the best day they had for reef trips from Cairns in four months.

Once we were checked in, we filled out the necessary paperwork and were given a safety briefing. The crew gave us a rundown on the Great Barrier Reef itinerary: Boat from Cairns to barrier reef, snorkel, lunch, snorkel, return to Cairns. Simple enough!

While fellow passengers sat at tables inside the cabin, we grabbed a cup of complimentary coffee and claimed the bow of the ship. Along with the other Cairns outer reef tours, we departed the docks and sailed east. It was a two-hour journey to our first snorkel stop, Breaking Patches Reef, an outer Great Barrier Reef just off Michaelmas Cay.

Stop #1 Breaking Patches, Outer Great Barrier Reef

Although we had left with all of the other boats on Great Barrier Reef day trips from Cairns, ours was the only boat at Breaking Patches. With my fins secured to my feet and the proper amount of anti-fog spit rubbed in my mask, I pushed off from the side platform into the cold, clear waters of the outer Great Barrier Reef.

The shallow sea backlit by the shining sun made it easy to spot the bright tropical fish and a sting ray swimming below. I had only been in the water for a few minutes and I was already claiming this Great Barrier Reef snorkeling tour a success. The colors were vibrant, the clarity incredible, the experience phenomenal!

The fish we saw were similar to species we had seen while snorkeling in Moorea, but the Cairns, Australia Great Barrier Reef took snorkeling to another level. Although the fish were alike, the reef experience in Cairns was gigantic in comparison. The fish were enormous and strikingly rich in color. The entire Cairns barrier reef was humming with lively activity.

As we floated over the colossal reefs, we could hear the clicking of Parrot Fish feasting on the coral. The coral seemed endless and more than once I had to force myself to stay within the required distance allowed from the boat rather than venturing further out.

Barrier Reef Cruises Cairns On-Board Lunch

The crew called us back to the boat when it was time for lunch. The on-board meal was a scrumptious and hearty helping of curry chicken, sausages and salads. Although other more luxurious Cairns barrier reef tours offer fresh seafood lunches, we were content with the meal we had. We also were eating on the move as we motored to our next snorkeling destination, Hastings Reef.

Stop #2 Hastings Reef, Outer Great Barrier

Revved up about our Cairns Reef excursion, we were the first ones in the water when we arrived at Hastings Reef. We never imagined that on one of the Great Barrier Reef Cairns tours we would have the water all to ourselves – even if it was for just a few minutes. It was amazing!

Entire schools of fish would sway with the current. We watched some fish that seemed to be on a mission. Other fish stayed close to the branched coral, a perfect hiding spot when intruders came by.

I could almost reach out and touch the intensely colorful fish as they swam by me, giving me a hard, one-eyed stare. The smallest fish I saw was a transparent fish the size of the end of my pinky finger. On the other end of the spectrum, two-foot long fish that glowed bright neon were impossible to miss.

Great Barrier Reef Attractions: Maori Wrasse and Reef Sharks

In much deeper water at Hastings Reef, the coral heads protruded from the ocean floor. They were absolutely teeming with marine life. As we swam, we encountered fascinating underwater scenes not witnessed in the shallow water on our first Cairns reef snorkeling stop.

In addition to the colorful tropical fish, we caught sight of two of the most sought-after underwater creatures on Cairns snorkeling trips: a Maori Wrasse and reef sharks.

It was on the far side of the coral that I encountered the biggest fish I’ve ever seen while under water, a Maori Wrasse. The enormous, grayish-purple fish is commonly featured on brochures for Cairns boat trips, but I had no real hopes of actually catching a glimpse of one on our Great Barrier Reef boat tour. When I swam around the coral, the puffy-lipped fish looked at me with its suspect, bubbly eyes. Measuring about four feet long and two feet from top to bottom, the Maori Wrasse was agile enough to evade a close-up inspection from us. Spotting the iconic fish was a highlight of our Cairns Great Barrier Reef day tour!

However, there were more surprises in store at Hastings Reef. In between mammoth coral heads, we clearly saw two reef sharks on the sandy bottom of the sea. The harmless sharks playfully chased each other in circles as we hovered above watching in awe. The calm water made it easy to explore and there seemed to be a never ending amount of reef to discover. We didn’t want our Australia Great Barrier Reef tour to end!

One More Great Barrier Reef Experience: Boomnetting

Although outer Great Barrier Reef tours are focused on the best snorkeling Cairns has to offer, some companies offer additional water activities. On our journey back to shore, we learned there was one more activity in the water: Boomnetting. Not a term I was familiar with, a rope net is lowered from the stern of the boat with participants clinging to the netting. As the boat speeds up, the goal is to hang on for as long as you can.

To be honest, the game is probably more suited to an episode of Stupid Human Tricks than a Great Barrier Reef cruises from Cairns. Still, the challenge was too enticing to pass up. Besides, it allowed us one more chance to swim in the sea. We were the first in line and took our places on the net with other adventurous passengers. My friend bailed on Speed One. I hung on until Speed Two, letting go with face full of saltwater. No one lasted past Speed Three. Time for a beer…

Return To Cairns Port

After boarding the boat for the fourth – and final – time, the captain navigated the waters back to land. On the return trip, the crew offered complimentary wine and cheese and opened the bar. Get to know some of the must-see coral reef sites on the Great Barrier Reef.

Although the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef  stretches over 2300 kilometres along the Queensland coastline, Cairns is considered to be the official gateway to experience this beauty up close. With 3000 separate reefs and over 900 continental islands and coral cays, it’s the world’s largest coral reef system and has a myriad of unique marine life you won’t find anywhere else.

Now we have the big reef covered, it’s good to keep in mind that each of those 3000 separate reefs has its own dive sites  – basically the best spots on the reef where you can enter the water.

Ready to snorkel or dive on one of the seven wonders of the natural world, directly from Cairns? Take your pick from these 10 snorkelling and diving spots.

1. Flynn Reef

What it offers: Fantastic coral gardens Number of dive sites: Nine

Located around 60 kilometres offshore from Cairns, the popular Flynn Reef is known for its stunning coral gardens and diverse array of marine life.

It’s perfect for snorkelling the shallow waters, as well as scuba diving, as the outer edges of the reef drop away to an average depth of 20 metres. Diving conditions are optimal all year round. Tour operators Silverswift  and Passions of Paradise  visit Flynn Reef.

2. Milln Reef

What it offers: Beautiful clear waters Number of dive sites: 11

Also situated on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef is Milln Reef, home to some very famous dive sites – particularly Petaj Mooring where you can often find large schools of bright colourful fish called sweetlips hanging around, as well as resident turtles and whitetip reef sharks.

The Whale is another fun dive site with a shallow top creating the effect of a whale’s blowhole during low tide. Tour operators Silverswift, Passions of Paradise and the Pro Dive Cairns Three Day Liveaboard Scuba Dive Trip   visit Milln Reef.

3. Pellowe Reef

What it offers:  Epic wall dives and swim-throughs Number of dive sites: Two

A bit smaller than Flynn and Milln Reef is Pellowe Reef, yet it still packs a punch. One of the dive sites is named Cucumber Alley due to the vast amount of sea cucumbers that can be found here. The other dive site Darth Vader is named due to long deep valleys and caverns that cover up the light creating a dark gloomy (but amazing!) atmosphere.

Due to the smaller size of Pellowe Reef, it’s a lot more exposed to windy weather conditions and can only be accessed in extremely satisfactory weather conditions. Tour operators Silverswift, Passions of Paradise and the Pro Dive Cairns Three Day Liveaboard Scuba Dive Trip   visit Pellowe Reef.

4. Moore Reef

What it offers: Operators spend the day here Number of dive sites: 16

In the shape of a giant horseshoe with three outer reef pontoon operators parked here, Moore Reef is massive. The pontoons offer an easy way to explore the reef in the protected waters, so families especially love it here.

5. Thetford Reef

What it offers: Opportunity to see larger marine life Number of dive sites:  11

The two-kilometre-long Thetford Reef site has a bit of everything – great visibility, many coral heads and lots of swim-through canyons and passages to explore.

Cathedral, TUSA Canyons, and Rosco’s are some of its most famous diving sites, and remarkably, whale sharks and dwarf minke whales have been seen passing near this reef. Tour operators Passions of Paradise, Sunlover Cruises, Great Adventures and Reef Magic visit Thetford Reef.

6. Norman Reef

What it offers: Adventure playground for divers Number of dive sites:  15

Similar to Thetford Reef is Norman Reef, a reasonably large reef and one that’s especially appreciated by scuba divers. Here you can explore the many cliffs, caves, swim-through areas and even a little wreck. The reef’s depth also means that it’s home to a range of larger marine life, such as barracudas, trevally and even the odd reef shark.

7. Upolu Reef

What it offers: A wide variety of marine life Number of dive sites:  Six

Upolu is a small, protected lagoon-shaped reef with shallow coral gardens and is an excellent place for first-time introductory diving. You can spot a wide variety of marine life here such as giant clams, sea cucumbers, nudibranchs, cleaner wrasse, yellowtails, giant trevally and large green mauri wrasse.

Often hawksbill turtles can be found chewing on the red seagrass found growing between the hard and soft corals of the reef. Tour operators Passions of Paradise, Reef Day Tripper  and Ocean Freedom  visit Upolu Reef.

8. Saxon Reef

What it offers: Ideal night diving conditions Number of dive sites:  Six

Large enough to allow up to three boats at a time to moor, liveaboard dive boats often stop at Saxon Reef to give scuba divers a night experience. Reef sharks can be seen at night, and you can expect to see whitetip, blacktip and grey whaler sharks.

During the day, large shallow coral gardens are exposed where many soft and hard corals thrive and can be viewed either snorkelling or diving. Tour operators Passions of Paradise, Reef Experience, Reef Encounter and Divers Den visit Saxon Reef.

9. Hastings Reef

What it offers:  A favourite snorkelling spot Number of dive sites:  Nine

One of the shallower spots on the Outer Reef, a real highlight of Hastings Reef is its dive site Fish Bowl. Sitting around five meters under the surface of the water, Fish Bowl is home to plenty of healthy strong coral growth.

You may even spot turtles at Hastings along with a large school of humphead parrotfish. Tour operators Reef Experience, Reef Encounter and Divers Den visit Saxon Reef.

10. Agincourt Reef

What it offers: Incredible coral formations Number of dive sites:  30

Hop onboard a boat ride from Port Douglas  to reach Agincourt Reef, a series of many smaller reefs with at least 16 different dive sites. As the reefs are located on the edge of the continental shelf of Australia, the water quality is spectacular which creates a pristine environment for marine life and coral colonies.

The Gardens is a particularly popular dive site as they are renowned for their brightly coloured reef fish, making it a photographer’s paradise. Tour operators Quicksilver Cruises , Silversonic , Poseidon Dive and Snorkel  and Calypso Reef Cruises  visit Agincourt Reef.

Anyone who can swim, can snorkel. First time snorkelers may find breathing through a snorkel a little strange and uncomfortable, so we recommend practising in shallow water first. A Cairns island, cay or pontoon snorkel tour is recommended for first time snorkelers (as opposed to an Outer Great Barrier Reef day trip), as you can get comfortable in the shallow waters, before heading out to explore the reef.

Snorkeling is just like swimming, except you are floating on top of the water, face down, breathing through the snorkel. This allows you to make the most of your time on the reef, seeing the corals and fish beneath you. The masks provide the vision / lens / clarity you need to see the reef. A mask has three basic components, a glass “lens”, silicone “skirt” and adjustable strap.

Cairns operators are experienced at fitting masks to faces, so will be able to find one that is comfortable and best for you. Top tip: the adjustable strap, which fits around your head, will allow you to make the mask fit properly. You do not need to tighten this strap too much, as the water pressure will hold the mask to your face.

If you get water into your mask while snorkeling, simply lift it away from your face and drain it. If you get water into your snorkel, then blow sharply, to push the water through the end of the snorkel.

If you are not a confident swimmer, you can still enjoy snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef as all operators are able to provide you with buoyancy devices such as vests, noodles and safety rings. If you become tired while snorkeling, rest on the floatation device, or flip over and swim on your back, which uses different muscles. Alternatively, signal to the boat, they always have lifeguards on duty who can come and collect you in their tender.

Please note, it is recommended that you have a reasonable level of fitness to snorkel, especially if you are choosing an Outer Great Barrier Reef trip.

Snorkeling Tips

Snorkeling is an extremely safe activity, especially if you take all of the correct precautions and listen to your own body whilst swimming. Below are some basic Great Barrier Reef snorkeling safety tips.

Fitness. Make sure you only snorkel / swim to your fitness levels. Do not get too far away from the boat / island / coral cay / pontoon that you are not going to be able to swim back to it. Watch the currents and make sure you do not get carried away. It is highly recommended that you do not snorkel after consuming alcohol.

Sunburn. The Cairns Great Barrier Reef is located in a tropical location. Summer is hot and even winter is warm with high UV rays being emitted from the sun at all times throughout the year. When snorkeling, the water is running across your back, so while you may feel cool and comfortable, if you have not taken appropriate precautions, you could be getting sunburnt, which in extreme cases may lead to sun stroke. There are some easy ways to avoid this. Make sure you apply (and reapply) waterproof sunscreen throughout the day and take advantage of the lycra suits on offer, they provide great sun protection. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day: all Cairns reef tour operators provide cool water on board, free of charge.

Marine Stingers. Two types of marine stingers, or jellyfish, are found on Cairns' Great Barrier Reef. Both are poisonous and can leave painful stings and sometimes scars. Usually, they are only present in the waters between November and May, but this may change pending weather conditions. You can easily avoid painful contact with marine stingers by taking advantage of the full length body suits / lycra suits, available on board the boats. All Cairns day tour operators provide briefings and safety instructions regarding marine stingers, en route to the Great Barrier Reef. You do not need to do anything to prepare in advance for this.

Take a Friend. Like diving, it is always a good idea to snorkel with a friend. That way, if something goes wrong, like you get a cramp, you are not on your own. Stay close together while snorkeling and share the experience of exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

Don’t Touch the Reef or its Residents. The Great Barrier Reef is a protected marine environment, home to rare and endangered corals and marine life. It is advised and preferred that you do not touch any corals or marine animals, for your safety and theirs. Corals are sensitive to sunblock and creams, which can be easily transferred from your hands. Similarly (most) fish do not like to be handled and may respond with aggression. For your benefit and the protection of the Great Barrier Reef, for the enjoyment of future generations, please do not touch the reef, its residents or try to take a souvenir shell / coral home: fines do apply and will be enforced.

Look at your traveling party and consider what will work for them.  Have you got small kids, the grandparents, people who are not confident swimming – maybe someone who gets seas sick?  Of course, if you are a couple who are both certified scuba divers it is going to make it much easier to decide which reef tours are for you!

Questions to Ask Your Tour Operator about Great Barrier Reef Tours

• What destinations / or locations does the tour travel to?
• What can you see at this destination?  For example, the outer reefs are typically more colorful and less damaged than the closer reefs but require more time traveling on a boat.
• Will I be visiting an island or coral cay, or will I be visiting a pontoon?
• How will I be traveling to the reef?  Catamarans, sailboats, and even helicopters are options.
• How long will be spent traveling?  For example, some of the faster speed boats take just 15 minutes, the large high-speed catamarans 90 minutes, or sailing yacht several hours!
• How long will we able to spend snorkeling on the reef/doing activities at the reef?
• What activities do you offer?  For example, if you are a non-swimmer, you would want to ensure that the tour has a glass-bottom boat so you can see what is underneath the surface.

Questions for families traveling with kids.

• What if I get seasick?
• Can my small children fall over the edge of the boat?
• Are there kids’ activities on board?
• Is there a minimum age for taking my child snorkeling?

What Do You Do to Protect the Reef

One of the most important ways we, as tourists, can ensure our impact is not negative is by insisting that we travel with ethical operators.  When visiting, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park recommends choosing a High Standard Tourism Operator (HSTO) who operates in an ecologically sustainable manner, delivering high-quality reef experiences.  These HSTO operators are recognized by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority for their commitment to preserving the reef and are independently certified by environmental certification schemes like Ecotourism Australia and Earth Check.

Ask the operator, “Do you give back to the reef conservation and how do you do it”?  Eg, do you participate in reef restoration projects?

All people aged over 4 pay a $6.50 fee for entering the Great Barrier Reef Heritage Area.  These funds are applied to the Marine Park for its day-to-day management and also its longevity.  As ALL people entering pay this fee, regardless of the operator, payment of this fee should not be view as an environmental commitment!  It is obligatory!

The Different Types of Great Barrier Experiences – Reef Tours Cairns

Island day tour.

For many of us, our tropical fantasies involve sitting on the sand as turquoise waters lap at our feet, and the palm trees shade us.  A day trip to an island is a fantastic option for families and non-swimmers because of the options you have once on the island.  Possibly, best of all, is the feeling of being on a tropical island.  Isn’t this what you have traveled to tropical North Queensland for?

For people wanting to snorkel, you can do so off the beach in the shallow waters.  You can snorkel at both Green Island and Fitzroy Island as well as explore the beaches and island itself.  Read our  15 Things to do at Fitzroy Island Australia with Kids for more information.

There are also glass-bottom boat tours for people who want to have a dry reef experience.  You can also consider SUPs.  For families with kids, there are boogie boards with viewing sections (we saw these at Fitzroy Island).

Some of the islands on the reef include Green Island and Fitzroy Island and we provide some detailed information on our visits below.

Great Barrier Reef Floating Pontoons

One of the better ways to explore the outer reef without being confined to a boat all day is to visit one of the offshore pontoons, operated by companies like Marine World or Quicksilver.  These activity platforms serve as a base for multiple reef activities.  Beginners are given snorkeling lessons, taught how to use the gear, and accompanied with a guide if required.

Pontoons a great option for those traveling with children.  They have play areas and swimming and safety gear for kids to use.  There are usually also plenty of activities for kids to get involved in on the pontoons.  Some pontoons have a viewing deck below water that you can walk into as well as glass-bottom boats and semi-submersible vessels.

Fun Fact! This Mumma first snorkeled the reef as a 6-year-old off one of these floating pontoons – and she still remembers the blue lips of the clam vividly!

Snorkeling Tours

If you have a reasonable level of swimming then without a doubt a snorkeling tour from Cairns will be one of the most amazing experiences of your life.

Open water Great Barrier Reef tours are a good option for adults or families with older kids that want to get away from the crowds.  These Cairns snorkeling tours are usually with a smaller group and the boats allow you to snorkel or dive straight off the back of the boat.

Other Types of Great Barrier Reef Experiences

There are helmet-dive tours or the exciting sea walker adventure.  This is where you’re required to don a spaceman-like helmet that has fresh air being pumped into its dome.

Helicopter rides or scenic flights allow a bird’s eye view of the reef and are an excellent way to get the scope and size of the reef.

Also, liveaboard or sailboat cruises.  For those who really want to get out on the Great Barrier Reef, a live-aboard or sailboat cruise might be the way to go.  As expected with the name “live-aboard” you spend a couple of nights on the boat which travels to different diving or snorkeling spots.   This means that you will be able to experience many different sites, the amazing biodiversity of the reef, and also spend nights under the stars.

If you have the experience how about diving the reef?  I’m told that snorkeling is really only scratching the surface of the Great Barrier Reef.  That if you want to truly discover the majesty of the reef, then the best way to do it is by going scuba diving.   Reputedly home to some of the best dive sites in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a diver’s paradise.

What to Bring on Cairns Reef Tours

Make sure your sunscreen is marine safe.  Many tourists don’t realize that many of the most common types of sunscreen actually contain harmless chemicals that can damage the reef and marine life!  In fact, I’ve read that damage from personal care products (not just sunscreens, but lip balms, mosquito repellents, and more) can be equally as damaging to the fragile ecosystem as global warming.  Responsible tour operators do provide appropriate sunscreen on board but having your own marine-friendly sunscreen will be vital if you do any activities on your own around Cairns.

A Note about Sea Sickness

If you suffer from seasickness you know that it can substantially affect your enjoyment of your Great Barrier Reef tour.  It is important to go well prepared and try to minimize the effects.  Below are some different options to combat seasickness.

• Natural remedies include ginger.  Either raw or tablets – you can try sweets for kids, though the taste is strong.
• Kwells are a product we use for my son’s car sickness and it seems to help (sometimes)!
• Motion sick bands (We use Sea-Bands).
• Sitting at the back of the boat or sitting facing the direction you are traveling.
• Looking to the horizon.

Great Barrier Reef Tours and Snorkeling in Cairns

While we like to try out every tour and experience for ourselves, obviously we can’t try every tour!  Here we have called on other travel bloggers to share their experiences!

Green Island Snorkeling

If you are looking for the ultimate way to explore the Great Barrier Reef with kids, look no further than a trip to Green Island.  Green Island is one the best Queensland Island Holidays you and your family will ever experience!

You can easily do a day trip from Cairns on one of the fast catamarans.  Alternatively, you can stay on the island and explore from a different location each time you venture out.  The beauty of Green Island is that it is so small.  The whole family can easily walk and choose a new snorkel location each day.

The main patrolled beach at high tide is the best time to don your best snorkel gear and you are guaranteed to be able to swim close to the shore with a reasonable level of water beneath you.  You are also guaranteed to see amazingly magnificent vibrantly colored fish!  It is perfect for kids because the beach is patrolled, the water is calm and it is relatively shallow.  So. if they’re new to snorkeling, they can simply walk with their faces in the water.  The other great thing there for kids is the floatation devices that they have anchored to the floor of the ocean which children can hang onto while they watch the fish swim beneath them.

From Green Island, you can also head offshore just a couple of kilometers by boat into the deeper ocean.  It can be choppier out there but you will have a better chance of spotting turtles.  Now that is certainly a sight worth searching for!  For a full-day tour, you can head out to one of the permanent pontoons; these tours will usually include a meal on the reef as well.

For the real little ones or non-swimmers/non-snorkelers, you can also enjoy the glass bottom boats from Green Island.  Staying at the Island Resort gives you free access to the glass bottom boat tours and all your snorkeling equipment.

Day Tour to Low Isles 

A day tour to Low Isles is a great option for exploring the reef if you are visiting from Port Douglas.  We have enjoyed this tour twice when holidaying in Queensland – we loved the first cruise that we did so much that we returned to do it again a year later.  There are multiple tour operators to Low Isles.  We have traveled with Sailaway from Port Douglas, which we found to be a fantastic luxury experience suitable for all ages.

Travel time to the reef from Port Douglas is just one hour each way, giving you five full hours to explore the reef and island as well as having lunch.  Activities include snorkeling, a guided tour with a marine biologist, a guided heritage tour on the island, and a glass-bottom boat tour.

The reason we chose this tour is that you can do as little or as much as you like.  We enjoyed all the activities when we traveled by ourselves.  However, we stuck to snorkeling when we toured with the kids.  It’s a fantastic experience for the family.  The children learned so much about the ecosystem and why we need to contribute to its preservation and they enjoyed it so much they wanted to return as soon as we’d finished!

We also loved the ease of the day.  Once we arrived everything is taken care of.  All meals including a delicious morning tea, lunch (including seafood), and afternoon tea are provided.  You’re guided through all activities with comprehensive instructions.  You are also provided with all the equipment you need.  All you need to bring is a towel, swimmers, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a camera.

Another option for traveling to Low Isles is the ReefSprinter which takes just 15 minutes to arrive and provides you with a half-day tour.  This would be a good option if you’re short of time but we preferred to travel slow and take the whole day to enjoy this incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We opted to explore the Great Barrier Reef from the Quicksilver Cruises pontoon , located at Agincourt Reef.  Our departure was from Port Douglas and entailed about 90 minutes of travel time each way. 

We decided to spend the day with Quicksilver because our family included the full range of water comfort and we wanted each person to be able to experience the incredible sea life on the reef. Quicksilver offers exactly that!

One of my children didn’t want to enter the water at all, but he loved spending hours going on Quicksilver’s semi-submersible and looking through the massive windows in the underwater observatory.  He saw incredible creatures without ever getting wet!

My other child was eager to hop in the water.  At 3.5, she had been snorkeling a few times and knew what to expect.  I was a little worried about finding equipment to fit her on the pontoon, but Quicksilver had everything we needed for her!  The snorkeling platform made entry easy for her and she immediately saw fish as big as her head when she went below the surface!  Quicksilver even had pool noodles to help her float. 

My husband and I are experienced snorkelers and both enjoyed the experience.  I went on the “advanced snorkel tour” with a marine biologist, who took us beyond the better area surrounding the pontoon.  We saw wonderful creatures, including clownfish flitting in and out of an anemone and a stunning giant clam!

I do wish that there had been more time at the reef.  In total, we were there for about four hours.  We visited during Chinese New Year and the boat and pontoon were both packed – there weren’t even enough seats on the very bumpy boat ride back.  That level of crowding may not be an issue going forward, but if you’re considering a visit during that time of year it may be worth considering a small operation.  If I were going with older kids who wanted to spend a lot of time in the water, I might have chosen a small boat excursion with multiple snorkel stops.  But for a family with wide-ranging interests and ability levels, Quicksilver was an excellent choice!

Fitzroy Island

We absolutely love Fitzroy Island and our last visit was for three nights.  However, if you are short of time and can only make a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef, this makes the perfect excursion for families.

It is a short boat ride from Cairns – less than an hour – and in relatively sheltered waters.  Then you are suddenly transported to a remote, tropical island paradise.  This is the thing – Fitzroy Island feels like it is a million miles away from the rest of the world, and not so visited that you can’t escape the crowds.

For us, it’s a great place to go snorkeling in Cairns.  You can snorkel right off the island.  You can also join one of the daily tours for a snorkeling trip around the island.  For people with kids who aren’t confident with a snorkel, there are boogie boards with clear sections you can see look through.  For kids, there are SUP’s, a pontoon, and kayaks.

Nudey Beach on Fitzroy Island is ranked as one of the best beaches in Australia.  It’s a short 20-minute walk through the lush rainforest from the jetty where the ferry arrives.

For us, a day trip to Fitzroy Island is one of the best ways to experience everything on the Great Barrier reef in one place.  In fact, we’d probably recommend spending one day on a pontoon and one day at Fitzroy Island if you can fit it into your itinerary!

Passions Of Paradise Sailing Tour

The Passions of Paradise sailing tour is a great way to see the Great Barrier Reef and enjoy a day of snorkeling, swimming, and even diving.  This tour leaves from Cairns.  It is an excellent choice for those looking for a good selection of activities at a reasonable price point.

This sailing tour offers a variety of different options but their most popular tour is a full-day Great Barrier Reef trip which goes from 8:00 in the morning to about 5:00 pm in the evenings.  Passions to Paradise operates with a catamaran.  This means it’s the perfect choice for those prone to seasickness since this type of boat is a lot more stable.

Prices start at 185$ for adults and 120$ for children.  There are also family packages available for $519 which includes two adults and two children.  For this price, you will receive snorkeling or diving equipment, life vests and wetsuits, morning and afternoon tea, and a freshly prepared buffet lunch that includes tropical fruit.

The staff of the Passions of Paradise Tour is always available to help.  They can offer guidance for those who cannot swim.  You’ll also be able to take part in a guided snorkeling tour although diving costs extra.  This tour is a great choice for the entire family with lots of things to do onboard as well as the multiple stops at the Great Barrier Reef.

Ocean Quest Overnight (Liveaboard) Experience

Without a doubt, visiting the Great Barrier Reef is one of the best things to do in Cairns .  I knew that a day trip to the reef wasn’t going to be enough for me.  I knew I had to book a liveaboard option.  There are several benefits to spending the night on a boat on the Great Barrier Reef.  Not only does it allow you the option to see the reef at night, but it also allows you to visit a number of different dive sites on the outer reef.  Furthermore, after a day of exploring the colorful underwater world, there’s no better end than being gently lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of the waves against the boat.

Many dive companies in Cairns offer excellent liveaboard options.  However, what set Divers Den apart for me was their Sharks In The Dark Dive Experience.  In the evening, certified divers have the option for a night dive where you’ll be surrounded by many reef sharks.

For those without certification, you can observe the sharks from the boat.  Also, during calm conditions, you can pop on a mask and wetsuits to get a look beneath the surface from their dive platform.  This was definitely one of the highlights!

Beyond this experience, the 35m Ocean Quest catamaran is purpose-built for a diving holiday and felt well designed.  Able to accommodate 44 guests, the boat felt very spacious with a large sundeck area to relax between dives.  Finally, it’s worth going just for the meals on board – they were absolutely delicious!

Great Barrier Reef Experiences South of Cairns

One of the most magical ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef is from above on a scenic flight.  Although you do not see the reef from up close, you will get to understand the vast scale of this colorful wonder and in many ways appreciate it more.  The flights leave from Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays last around an hour.  Usually, this option includes a window seat, so you do not have to worry about not being able to see the reef.

From above, you can see the incredible islands that make up the Great Barrier Reef; including Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays Islands.  Also, you will soar above the famous Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Heart Reef.  You can watch the colors vary from the light turquoise to the deep dark blue where the water is deeper contrasting with the white sand remote beaches.

Another breath-taking aspect of seeing the Great Barrier Reef from above is that the pilots are usually excellent whale spotters.  Depending on the time you visit in the year, you might be lucky enough to see the great mammals from the plane.  It changes each year, but it is typically from May to August.  Undeniably, you will not forget this scenic flight in a hurry.  It is blissfully spectacular and unforgettable.  There is no experience like it in the world.

Summertime Cruise (from Airlie Beach)

If you want to get up close and personal with the world-famous Great Barrier Reef formation called Heart Reef, there’s only one way to do it.

For many years, Heart Reef has been a protected area in the Whitsundays and no boats were allowed there.  This was due to it being surrounded by shallow water and jagged coral systems.  They are difficult for conventional boats to navigate without running aground and damaging the reef.  However, recently a brand new private helicopter pontoon has been constructed a few hundred meters away from Heart Reef.  This makes it possible for visitors to fly to the pontoon and snorkel around Heart Reef.

In order to visit Heart Reef, you’ll first need to get to Hamilton Island .  Hamilton Island Air has exclusive access to the ‘Heart Island’ Pontoon.  After a beautiful scenic helicopter flight over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Whitsunday Island, and Hook Island, you’ll then be whisked off for a landing at the ‘Heart Island’ pontoon.  Here you’ll get 90 minutes to explore the Heart Reef via glass-bottom boat and snorkeling.

The ‘Journey to the Heart’ Tour is not cheap.  It will set you back $1100 per person for 3 hours, but it is totally worth it.  All snorkeling equipment is provided, as well as sparkling wine and water.

Lady Elliot Island

Most people in the Southern part of Queensland can’t experience the Great Barrier Reef without traveling a long way.  Having  Lady Elliot Island located 46 nautical miles off the coast of Bundaberg, it’s only a short flight away from cities like Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, or Bundaberg.  With this in mind, you could be swimming in the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow!

This is a wonderful day out and great fun for the whole family to enjoy.  After arriving, snorkeling equipment is provided for free and the kids will enjoy the underwater life straight off the beach.  Take as much time as you need!  Explore the coral, find unusual creatures like sea cucumbers and crabs or maybe run into a friendly turtle.

Alternatively, you could take a small boat ride to the outer reef and snorkel in sections where there is a lot more room to move, maybe seeing giant manta rays, dolphins, and large fish.

For those that don’t want to get wet, there’s an option for a guided glass bottom boat tour.  It’s here the guide will teach you about the creatures you see.  They also help you understand the eco-system surrounding this amazing island.

Apart from the water activities, Lady Elliot Island does provide several things to do on land.  These include bird watching, turtle nursery, fish feeding, and includes a full buffet lunch.  Additionally, with the eco-resort available you can visit for the day, overnight, or a week.

It’s a whole other world down there and Lady Elliot Island is a great place to explore it!

Reef Restoration Foundation – This was the first coral offshore nursery and is located near Fitzroy Island.  Using international research they grow coral on giant tree frames underwater before it is planted offshore.  Explore more here.

• Testing sunblock for the reef.  Not sunblock for people, but sunblock for the reef itself, stopping the sun’s rays from getting through to the corals.
• Using a new reseeding method by developing millions of coral larvae and then being used to form colonies
• Curating the largest biobank of frozen corals in the world.  This involves freezing and banking coral sperm, in order to protect at-risk species.

Can you snorkel off the beach in Cairns?

You can’t snorkel directly from the beaches in Cairns, as the coastline around Cairns is primarily made up of mudflats and mangroves, and the waters are often murky, limiting visibility. Additionally, the presence of crocodiles nearby and marine stingers , which appear between October and May when the waters are warmer, mean you can still swim, but you should proceed with caution and heed warning signs.

To snorkel from a beach in Cairns, you'll need to visit one of the nearby islands on the Great Barrier Reef , where the water is clearer and coral reefs are close to the shore. To reach the islands, visitors will generally have to book a ferry or sailing tour . Best Places To Snorkel From The Beach Near Cairns?

Fitzroy island.

Located just a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns, Fitzroy Island is a must-visit for beach snorkellers. The island's clear, turquoise waters are teeming with fringing coral gardens and colourful fish. Nudey Beach is particularly popular, offering calm, shallow waters ideal for snorkelling. You can easily spot clownfish, parrotfish , blue-spotted lagoon rays and even sea turtles as you explore the waters close to the shore. 

Green Island

Green Island is another top destination for snorkelling near Cairns, accessible via a 50-minute boat ride. Tips for Beach Snorkeling Near Cairns

Safety First : Always be aware of local marine conditions, including tides and currents. During the stinger season, wear a stinger suit to protect against jellyfish.

Timing: The best time to snorkel is during the morning when the water is typically calmer and clearer. Picking a day when the winds are lower helps, too!

Gear: Bring your own snorkelling gear for comfort, but all of the tour providers to these locations also offer snorkel gear hire and often included in the tour price.

Respect the Reef: Avoid touching or standing on the corals and marine life. It's fragile and plays a vital part in the health of all ecosystems. Not only this, some can sting.
