When to go to Montana for spring flowers, summer sun, fall colors and winter snow

With so much wilderness right on the doorstep, there's always something to do in Montana at any time of year. The state is highly in tune with the rhythms of nature, and activities vary with the weather and season.

The peak summer and winter seasons always draw in a crowd, but the shoulder seasons in late spring and fall reveal a calmer, quieter side to the Big Sky state. Whenever you come, check if you can do the activities you want to do and see the places you want to see at that time of year.

Summer is the high season, thanks to the endless opportunities for hiking and outdoor exploration , but snow sports in winter are another major draw thanks to the state's consistent covering of fluffy snow. It's important to note that businesses often use the less popular shoulder season and off-season to perform renovations or reduce their hours. Even so, the quieter months are ideal if you want to see Montana looking more like it did in the frontier days, without queues of RVs on the highways.

Here's a guide to what Montana has to offer throughout the year, from hiking-friendly summer to ski-tastic winter and everything in between.

A young girl hikes over a suspension bridge in Glacier National Park, Montana.

The summer high season (July–August) is the time for hiking and water activities

Montana is extremely family-friendly and it's easy to drive deep into wild country when there's no snow, making summer the peak season to visit the state. Yellowstone National Park is in full swing by this point, and the Going To The Sun Road in Glacier National Park is clear of snow and open to traffic by the end of June or early July. As the snow melts, seasonal workers flock to staff mountain resorts and support the surge in tourism, and the state's bears come out of hibernation.

This is the ideal time to engage in the summer activities for which Montana is famous. Fly-fishing, hiking, cycling, whitewater rafting, wildlife spotting, admiring the wildflowers and going to the rodeo are just some of the ways to keep busy in Montana summer. This is also when the huckleberries come out, if you're willing to fight the bears for them (carry bear spray to be on the safe side).

The festival calendar is busy, too. Big events in July include the Under the Big Sky Festival in Whitefish and Flathead Cherry Festival in Polson; in August, try the Sweet Pea Festival in Bozeman and Huckleberry Festival in Trout Creek.

The cons of visiting Montana during the high season are higher prices and crowds, which can somewhat defeat the purpose of exploring these wide-open spaces. Another inconvenience is the heat, which often surprises visitors who assume this snow-prone state is always cold. Temperatures can climb above 100 ºF  during the day in the high season, and with regular wildfires, the air is often hazy, obscuring the mountain vistas that many have traveled so far to gaze upon.

The winter high season (December–March) is the best time for snow sports

Winter is another extremely popular time to visit Montana, and the focus is still on outdoor activities – just a different set . There are ski and snowboarding resorts throughout the state, the most popular of which is Big Sky , about an hour from Bozeman . Snowmobilers also descend on Montana en masse in the winter, congregating in Cook City, just north of Yellowstone National Park.

Winter is actually an exceptional time to visit Yellowstone, even though only the northern road is open. You won't be able to see Old Faithful or many other famous sights within the park, but wolves and other wildlife (besides the hibernating species) gather in the Lamar Valley, and are easy to spot against the white snow. Tour operator Yellowstone Wolf  Tracker' s  winter tours are nothing short of epic for wildlife spotters. Other popular winter activities in Montana include snowshoeing, dog sledding and cozying up by the fire in a log cabin while snowflakes fall outside the window.

Winter is not always an easy time to visit, though it can be very rewarding. The roads can be tricky to navigate if you are not an experienced winter driver, and many non-tourist businesses close their doors until summer comes again. Sunshine is limited at this time of year, and temperatures can drop past the point of being deadly if you're not prepared; keep emergency food, water and blankets in your vehicle.

On the plus side, you may spot the aurora  borealis lighting up the sky on dark nights, and many towns serve up winter cheer in the form of fun-filled winter carnivals, such as Lewistown's Montana Winter Fair , the Bozeman Ice Festival and the Winter Carnivals in Red Lodge and Whitefish.

The shoulder season (September–November) is the best time for avoiding the crowds

The shoulder season is locals' favorite time of year. After all, people don't live in Montana for the noise and bustle. The weather is mild, the roads and trails are still open, and the crowds have mostly gone home after the summer crush. If you're looking to see Montana in its most pristine state, this is the time to come. Plus, October is when the leaves start to change color, with a vivid shift towards crimson, orange and yellow to rival any fall colors you'll find in New England .

There are some inconveniences, though. Many restaurants, hotels, and other businesses shed staff when the schools start back up again, and some use the lull between summer and winter to do renovations. Service can be slower than normal and activities harder to come by, but Montana culture is nothing if not encouraging of a little self-reliance. It's also worth noting that Montana's unpredictable weather can mean rain in September, obscuring the views.

There are some good festivals, like Missoula Oktoberfest, and the Wine and Food Festival and HarvestFest in Billings.

Low season (April–June) is the best time for budget travelers

What other places refer to as the low season, Montanans call the mud season. This is the time of year when winter turns to spring and the snow melts, leaving lakes of mud in its wake. It's not all bad, though – this is playtime for off-roaders and 4WD enthusiasts, as well as car washing businesses. Restaurants and tour operators use the slow season to get ready for summer, and many popular outdoor areas stage a soft opening without the overwhelming summer crowds.

As you might expect, this is a rainy time of year, which can create hazardous road conditions and disappointing vistas. On the flip side, hotels will be at their least expensive prices during this slow season for customers. Pond skimming, art walks, farmer's markets and the International Wildlife Film Festival in Missoula are popular events. It's also worth making time for the Lewis and Clark Festival in Great Falls and Montana Mule Days in Hamilton.

The Best Time to Visit Montana

best time to visit montana usa

TripSavvy / Ellen Lindner

The best times to visit Montana are in the summer months between June and August, when the weather is sunny and warm, and between December and March when it’s ski season. As Montana is a destination that is all about outdoor fun, these are the times where you can play in nature with an optimal climate.

Whenever you decide to go, use this guide to help plan your trip to this state known for its big adventures, wide open spaces, national parks , wildlife, and endless things to do outside.

Key Events & Festivals

Montana has many festivals and events that take place year-round, but summer is the most active time of year. If you plan on traveling to attend one of these fun happenings, get an early start on booking accommodations or camping spots, especially within the national parks, which can fill up fast. Outside of Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks , crowds are usually not a huge problem when visiting Montana during a special event or festival. Hotel prices, however, do increase over the summer and winter months when more tourists visit the larger cities and towns in the state.

Montana also has national and regional  public holidays . July 4 is a significant holiday where most towns have a parade and evening fireworks display. Commerce, however, is generally unaffected and still operates as usual.

The Weather in Montana

The weather in Montana varies significantly across the state, divided by the Continental Divide, with the eastern part experiencing chillier and windier weather. The temperature also changes with the elevation and topography—the mountains on the western side have distinct climate patterns and snowfall.

Summer in Montana, with its moderate temperatures, is quite lovely. However, late spring and early summer are prone to rain and thunderstorms. July has peak summer temperatures of 85 degrees F on average while winter sees an average low of 0 degrees F. November through February sees the coldest temperatures, so if you’re not planning on skiing or enjoying the outdoors, you may want to avoid visiting during this time. Both times are popular to visit, however, so it’s essential to dress for the weather when visiting.

Peak Season in Montana

The peak season to travel to the American frontier, is during the summer months, particularly July and August. You’ll find that Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks are well-visited and, in many cases, over-crowded during this time. Book your accommodations early as many hotel rooms and campsites are full, especially inside of the national parks, and be prepared for higher accommodation prices. Outside of the parks, however, crowds aren’t an issue, and you’ll find lots of wide-open spaces with few tourists.

While the weather in January is typically the coldest and darkest month of the year, with the average highs between 22 and 32 degrees F, this month also experiences the most snow.

Events to check out:

  • While tourism isn’t at its peak, January is a great time to visit Montana if you’re a skier or snowboarder. Big Sky Resort hosts many events throughout the season like SnoBar, a Saturday night dance party with DJ music and drinks served at a bar made of snow.

This month experiences frigid temperatures—warm layers are a must. Average highs are between 5 and 40 degrees F. Snowstorms and blizzards are common, which increases the need for caution when driving on the icy roads, especially through mountain passes.

  • The Whitefish Winter Carnival organizes several events this month, including a gala, Penguin Plunge, Kiddie Carnival, Rotary Pancake Breakfast, Grand Parade, and Pie Social.
  • Skijoring , a competition where a horse runs at top speed while pulling a skier over snow and ice, is a popular event throughout the western half of the state during the winter months.

March is still quite cold and snowy, with temperatures around 40 to 50 degrees F during the day and 15 to 30 degrees F at night. Tourist season is relatively low during this month, which is a great time for deals on accommodations and activities.

  • Even though the population of Butte , Montana, is only around 35,000, the number of people that wander the streets during St. Patrick’s Day increases exponentially. Visit for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, watch the Irish step dancers, listen to bagpipers, and drink your weight in green beer.

Bring warm layers, rain gear, and weather-appropriate footwear during this month in Montana, where the weather is quite wet, often still snow laden, and chilly at night.

  • The Department of Native American Studies and the American Indian Council at Montana State University in Bozeman hosts an annual powwow that is widely attended. Visitors can see cultural dancing, drumming, and booths full of Native American food, crafts, and art.
  • The International Wildlife Film Festival , held annually in Missoula, is also an important event. Filmmakers showcase their work, highlighting conservation efforts for wildlife and their environment.

This month is the start of quite comfortable weather. While you should always be prepared with layers, you can expect sunny and relatively warm wildflower-filled days.

  • For some cowboy fun, visit Virginia City for the annual Memorial Day Horseback Poker Ride. Ride horses, catch candy at the parade, and celebrate the opening of the season.
  • At the end of May, Whitefish hosts Feasts Whitefish , home to Distillers’ Fest, Restaurant Week, Burger Battle, and The Grand Gala.

The weather in June is typically dependable, warm, and sunny. This is a great month to visit ahead of the peak of tourism.

  • Visit Livingston this month for the Western Sustainability Exchange , which happens at the beginning of June. Hand-pick fresh fruits and vegetables at the Livingston Farmers Market, wander through stalls of arts and crafts, listen to live music, and enjoy family-friendly programming.
  • The Battle of Little Bighorn is a major tourist destination in the state and in June you can witness a reenactment positioned along the Little Bighorn River to learn about the history of the battle.
  • The In the Footsteps of Norman Maclean Festival is a literary celebration, featuring author talks, film screenings, and more, held in Seeley Lake and Missoula.

This month is the start of peak season in the state of Montana, when the weather is the most pleasant. Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks are well-visited, and you’ll have to plan ahead if you plan on staying inside the parks.

  • For nearly 70 years, locals and visitors have been attending the North American Indian Days Powwow in Browning, Montana. This is a celebration of culture through dance, music, and crafts.
  • The Sapphire Quilt Club hosts a large quilt show each year in Stevensville, Montana. Hundreds of quilts will be on display and there will be a silent auction and educational opportunities.
  • The Livingston Roundup Rodeo is a family-friendly annual event that includes a downtown parade plus a full rodeo with events like barrel racing, bull riding, steer wrestling, and team roping.
  • For music fans, the Montana Folk Festival in Butte is one of the largest free music festivals in the northwest, with performances from over 200 artists.
  • Under the Big Sky is a large ranch-style music and arts festival held in Whitefish.
  • The Red Ants Pants Festival , a large music, art, and culture celebration, held in White Sulphur Springs.

This month experiences the warmest weather, with daytime temperatures across the state in the 70 to 90 degrees F range. The days are long, sunny, warm, and dry.

  • The Sweet Pea Festival is one of the largest celebrations of the arts in the state. Music, dancing, theatre, and family-friendly programming bring visitors to Bozeman each summer. Sweet Pea also organizes the Sweet Pea Juried Art Show, Bite of Bozeman, Music on Main, Sweet Pea Run, and Sweet Pea Parade (held during July and August).

The temperatures get a little cooler this month, especially at night, and the deciduous trees begin to turn color.

  • Havre, Montana, holds its annual Festival Days and parade in September, a three-day celebration of summer’s end.

Fall colors are in full swing this month and taking a drive throughout Montana’s mountain and prairie regions is a highlight.

  • As in most states across the nation, Oktoberfest is a popular time for festivals and events (held in September and October). Visit Whitefish for the Great Northwest Oktoberfest , Red Lodge for their Oktoberfest, Great Falls for Oktoberfest in the West, and Townsend for the Fall Fest and Oktoberfest.
  • If you want to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, this month will be your last opportunity to do so before sections are closed for the season.

The weather in November is quite unpredictable, with colder weather and biting nighttime temperatures.

  • Visit the National Museum of Forest Service History in Missoula for the Old Fashioned Forest Service Christmas. You’ll enjoy hot cocoa, Santa sightings, sleigh rides, and shopping.
  • The Polson Parade of Lights and the Helena Parade of Lights are fun events to check out.

This month, you can really see what it’s like to be a Montanan as families take part in many holiday events, brightening up the streets and mountain towns. The weather is frigid, typically between 25 and 32 degrees F during the day.

  • Whitefish, Bozeman, Helena, Missoula, Billings, and more all have Christmas strolls this month. Montana Trolley leads Christmas light tours in Kalispell. The Nutcracker is performed in Missoula at Garden City Ballet .

Montana’s Seasonal Weather

A house in Montana nestled in the middle of a snowy field.

In Montana, you may experience distinct seasonal weather patterns. These patterns are largely influenced by Montana’s northern location and diverse topography.

To simplify things for you, here’s a rundown of the changing weather patterns in Montana throughout the year:

  • Winter (November to February): Temperatures often dip below freezing and can even reach sub-zero levels at night. December and January are particularly chilly months.
  • Spring (March to June): The weather gradually warms up, causing snow to melt away. By May, temperatures become milder, and signs of new life emerge as greenery blankets the landscape with blooming flowers.
  • Summer (July to Early September): Montanans experience warm to hot conditions, especially in lower elevations. In the western part of the state, daytime temperatures frequently surpass 90 ºF. Meanwhile, eastern Montana occasionally faces scorching heatwaves that push mercury levels even higher.
  • Fall (Late September to October): Fall is characterized by cooler temperatures and changing foliage. September and October offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures and colorful autumn foliage, especially in the mountains.

It’s essential to note that there can still be considerable temperature variations. These variations are influenced by factors such as the Continental Divide, elevation, local geography, and weather patterns.

The western part of Montana tends to have milder winters and more rain formations due to its closeness to the Pacific Ocean. The eastern plains experience a more continental climate with colder winters and warmer summers.

You might encounter unpredictable weather conditions and surprising fluctuations in temperatures.

Effects of Elevation and Topography on Climate

The climate in Montana is greatly influenced by its elevation and topography, which create a diverse range of conditions throughout the state.

So how do elevation and topography affect Montana’s climate specifically?

  • Elevation – Elevation plays a role in a region’s climate, impacting temperature, precipitation, and snowfall. Higher elevations generally mean cooler temperatures, more rainfall, and increased snowfall compared to lower areas.

For instance, consider Bozeman at 4,806 feet elevation, which experiences an average spring low of 27 °F. In contrast, Billings, at 3,153 feet elevation, has a spring low averaging 32 °F.

  • Topography -Topography also matters as it influences moisture and air patterns. Western Montana, influenced by the Pacific Ocean, enjoys a milder and wetter climate. Conversely, the eastern part has a semi-arid, continental climate.

Knowing the topography and elevation of Montana allows you to make informed decisions regarding activities, timing, and safety, ensuring that you get the most out of your experience while staying comfortable and safe.

The best time to visit is throughout the summer months between June and August when the weather is sunny and warm when there are many outdoor festivals and other summer holiday events.

Montana Weather by Month

winter trip to evergreen

  • Montana Weather in January : January often has some of the lowest temperatures in Montana, on average around 2°F (-16.7°C) in some areas. In western regions like Flathead Lake the highest temperatures will be in the range of 22°F (-5.6°C) to 32°F (0°C). There isn’t much sun at this time and days are short, with some of the heaviest snowfall of the year, especially across the southwestern mountain ranges . If there is any sunshine it only lasts for around 4 hours a day.
  • Montana Weather in February : Another cold winter month with average temperatures as low as 5°F (-15°C) and not much higher than 40°F (4.4°C) between the various regions of the state. Snowstorms and blizzards are common at this point in the winter, although the weather is somewhat irregular in February with variations of up to 50 degrees between areas separated by high mountains. There is plenty of cloud, ice, and snow, and not much by way of sun.
  • Montana Weather in March : March is close to the tail end of the winter season in Montana, with snowfall still common and heaviest in the southwest and south-central locations. There is a chance of slight rain in March, with most of it in the western regions, and a week or two of sunshine is possible. It is still fairly windy and cold in most places though, with average high temperatures between 40°F (4.4°C) and 50°F (10°C). Expect the nights to be on the cold side, as low as 15°F (-9.4°C) and 30°F (-1.1°C). Early spring is starting to break through in March in Montana, but it is still pretty much on the cold and windy side.
  • Montana Weather in April : April in Montana marks the beginning of milder days, although the nights are still cold and it is quite wet. Spring starts to show itself more prominently, as do tourists. Western Montana usually gets the most rainfall, at somewhere between 1.5″ (38.1mm) and 2.5″ (63.5mm). There is also a residue of snowfall in many places, but the majority is up in the high mountain ranges. April is the time in Montana when daytime temperatures become more bearable in the 50°F (10°C) to 60°F (15.6°C) range, but night temperatures still pass the freezing point. April signals more sunshine and the fishing season opens as the snow melts.
  • Montana Weather in May : May is a beautiful time to visit Montana as spring comes into full bloom. The northwest has average temperatures between 40°F (4.4°C) and 67°F (19.4°C), with even warmer temperatures being prevalent in the eastern regions.  Any snow that remains in May is largely in the upper mountain ranges, with rain being more prominent in many regions. The sunshine makes a comeback in the latter part of spring, as does the wildlife, in line with ever-increasing numbers of tourists.
  • Montana Weather in June : June is one of the best times to visit Montana in terms of sunshine, with average high temperatures now in the 70°F (21.1°C) to 80°F (26.7°C) range. It won’t get much colder now than 40°F (4.4°C) to 55°F (12.8°C), and both the lower valleys and the higher plains get plenty of sunlight during the summer. June can still be wet in some places though, with the rain coming in heavy showers and a chance of occasional thunderstorms. So be careful if heading out to the vastly open plains and make sure to carry rain protection and layered clothing, particularly on high mountain trails.
  • Montana Weather in July : July is the hottest month of the year in Montana, and the time to experience the best summer weather. The average temperatures are somewhere between 75°F (23.9°C) and 88°F (31.1°C) with night temperatures of around 40°F (4.4°C) to 55°F (12.8°C). July can still be little wet, though only with light rain and occasional thunderstorms, but it is mostly sunshine. It is still worth noting that on mountain ranges the temperatures can still plummet during the night, so pack warm clothes for camping trips in higher altitude areas.
  • Montana Weather in August : August is another beautiful Montana summer month with temperatures in the 70°F (21.1°C) to 90°F (32.2°C) range. Humidity is higher in August, with sunny days bringing an average 9 hours a day. Light clothing is ideal for daytime but you might need a few layers later on due to the drop in temperature.
  • Montana Weather in September : Montana begins its transition into the autumn season in this month, resulting in some stunning visual scenarios. Average high temperatures tend to be in the region of 60°F (15.6°C) to 70°F (21.1°C), with cooler nights ranging between 35°F (1.7°C) and 45°F (7.2°C). There may still be a few lingering summer thunderstorms around this time, but they are fairly dry. September has an average of around 18 days of sunny weather, and wildlife is still fairly active during the autumn, so don’t be too surprised to see the odd bear or two.
  • Montana Weather in October : Cooler temperatures are starting to draw in around October against the brilliant backdrop of fall. Average high temperatures are likely to be somewhere between 55°F (12.8°C) and 60°F (15.6°C), with lower temperatures closer to the 25°F (-3.9°C) to 40°F (4.4°C) mark and slight snowfall. This is Montana at its best weather-wise when there is an abundance of wildlife and it is prime fishing and hunting season. You may find that jackets and other warmer garments are becoming more necessary around this time.
  • Montana Weather in November : November signals the last days of autumn and ushers in colder temperatures. The average range is between 18°F (-7.8°C) and 48°F (8.9°C), and snowfall proper begins to appear in many places. Sunshine becomes scarcer in November at around 4 hours daily, and the weather becomes more unpredictable. This means you could encounter clear blue skies one minute and thunderstorms the next.
  • Montana Weather in December : December is pretty cold in Montana, with average temperatures dropping to the 25°F (-3.9°C) to 32°F (0°C) mark or lower. The eastern section of the state gets some of the coldest weather with average low temperatures of around 7°F (-13.9°C). Snowfall gets more severe, especially in the mountains, and a chill wind comes in. Short days mean the sun’s presence wanes significantly, and you will need to consider winter coats, caps, gloves, and boots etc. at this time of year.

Your Guide to Visiting Montana in August: What to Know Before You Go

' src=

Local Tips for Visiting Montana in August

Summer is the most popular time to visit Montana – the national parks are fully open and the weather is sunny and hot. It’s going to be crowded, but if you plan your trip to Montana right , you can still find open spaces and peaceful excursions.

If you’re looking to book a vacation in August to Montana, you’re in for an incredible time. However, there are some things you should know about traveling to Montana in August.

What’s the Weather Like in Montana in August?

Since it’s the height of summer, August is one of Montana’s hottest months. Temperatures reach an average high of 84.1 degrees Fahrenheit, dropping to as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

You likely won’t experience much humidity since Montana is known for its dry heat, but this tends to make for a more comfortable summer even when temps are high.

Unfortunately, with the dry heat comes the risk of wildfires. August is often referred to as “fire season” by locals in Montana. August (and sometimes earlier or into September) often sees wildfires ravaging parts of Montana. While your chances of being affected by evacuations or closures due to a wildfire are low, know that it is likely to encounter smoke in the air if a fire is blazing. How bad the smoke is and how much the normally blue sky is clouded depends on the fire containment level and which way the wind is blowing.

How Cheap are Flights to Montana in August?

Plane tickets to Montana will be more expensive in August than they would be later in the year. Consider booking your trip outside of Labor Day weekend since prices will typically be even more expensive over the holiday weekend. Beyond that, you’re likely just going to have to pay a premium for flying during August to Montana, which is expensive even in low season!

But definitely compare prices at different airports (such as Missoula vs. Kalispell or Bozeman vs. Billings) and compare rental car prices at each airport to find the rate that’s best for your budget. You might be surprised by what ends up being cheaper when you add together flight and car.

What’s Open at Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks?

While all the campgrounds and lodges in Yellowstone is typically scheduled to be open at Yellowstone National Park in August, be prepared to book your reservation well in advance. Accommodations in Montana fill up early and fast for August.

Many visitors take advantage of the summer hiking conditions, and you should, too – just don’t forget to bring your bear spray ! After your hike, you can visit a Yellowstone lodge for a bite to eat, gift shopping, or to participate in a  ranger-led program.

Read More: Can’t-Miss Things to See and Do in Yellowstone National Park

Like Yellowstone, all of Glacier National Park’s accommodations are usually open in August, but you’ll need to reserve your spot quickly.

August is also the only travel month when you can be fairly certain the entire Going-to-the-Sun Road will be open to driving. Every spring into June , huge snow drifts must be carefully plowed before it can open to drivers. In 2022, the road didn’t fully open until the middle of July !

That in and of itself is a prime reason why you should travel to Montana in August if you’re planning to visit Glacier National Park.

Fall daily highs range from 74.6°F (23.7°C) and 38°F (3.3°C), which will feel chilly given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a normal amount: 2 to 3 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is far too cold this time of year in Montana to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 40.2°F (4.6°C) and 28.8°F (-1.8°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 1 to 2 times per month. These times of year are fairly slow with tourists.

The Best Time to Visit Glacier National Park

These are the best times to visit Glacier National Park in Montana for warm weather, fewer crowds, affordable prices, and more.

Glacier National Park may be one of America's most popular national parks, but you can still experience a sense of solitude within its 1,583 square miles. Home to 762 lakes and more than 700 miles of hiking trails, the vast green space provides a haven for 71 mammal species, 276 documented types of birds — and the roughly three million human visitors it draws each year.

It doesn't matter if you visit for a week or a single day, or if you prefer to hike or explore by car — there's plenty to do and see (even virtually ). The park is open year-round, and its four stunning seasons can be broken down as follows.

  • High Season: May to September
  • Shoulder Seasons: March to April and October to November
  • Low Season: December to February

To help you decide when to go, we've compiled this guide on the best (and worst) times to visit Glacier National Park.

Best Times to Visit Glacier for Smaller Crowds

Most of the people who visit Glacier National Park each year choose to come in the summer, when the weather is warm and all facilities and attractions are typically open. To avoid those crowds (and enjoy a reduced entrance fee), plan to visit during the park's off-season, which stretches from October to April.

Crowds are at their very smallest in winter. The months of December, January, and February usually see fewer than 50,000 visitors combined — a far cry from the 700,000 visitors Glacier typically sees each July. You'll feel like you have the park to yourself on a winter visit , and you can enjoy unique experiences like cross-country skiing on the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. But be warned: Montana's winter weather can be fierce, and many of Glacier's services and attractions close for the off-season, so winter trips shouldn't be attempted without careful planning and preparation.

For reduced crowds in a less extreme environment, try visiting in the spring or fall. There will still be seasonal closures — certain roads prohibit vehicle traffic starting in October, and in the spring, hiking trails won't reopen until any ice has melted off of them. But these shoulder seasons offer countless charms, particularly around the park's perimeter. According to the park's website , "trails on the edges of the park tend to be snow-free quicker than toward the Continental Divide or middle of the park."

Best Times to Visit Glacier for Good Weather

Due to the park's mountainous, far-north terrain, the weather here is always unpredictable. It can go from sun to rain (and back again) in mere minutes. If you have your heart set on experiencing the park on a sunny day with warm, hike-friendly weather, try to visit between early July and late September, when nearly everything is accessible and the weather is mild.

Conditions tend to be warmer and wetter in the park's western half. West Glacier, Montana, a town on the southwest edge of the park, typically sees daytime temperatures in the 80s during July and August and the 60s and 70s in September and June. If you're traveling east of the Continental Divide or at elevations above 5,000 feet, you can expect temperatures to be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than they'd be in West Glacier.

No matter when you visit, make sure to bring layers, including a rain jacket and hat, in anticipation of the weather's frequent shifts.

Best Times to Visit Glacier for Lower Prices

During the winter (November through April), entrance passes for Glacier National Park drop in price. While a seven-day private vehicle pass typically costs $35, it drops to $25 during the winter months — and the per-person entrance fee goes from $20 to $15. The park also offers select "fee-free days" throughout the year (there were five in 2023). While these promotions can help you cut costs, be warned that they do come with above-average crowds.

If you want to save money on flights, rental cars, and hotel accommodations near the park, you may want to avoid high summer. July and August can easily log half of Glacier's visitors for the calendar year, so prices are at a premium due to stiff competition for lodging and services. To find lower rates at the area's best hotels and ideal weather, try months like June and September, which fall at the fringes of the peak season.

Best Times to Visit Glacier for Wildlife Spotting

Glacier National Park has been a refuge for wildlife since it was established in 1910. Its varied terrain is home to hundreds of animal species, including moose, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, mountain goats, wolves, bears, and mountain lions. The best time to see most of these creatures is in the fall, when the park quiets down and the animals make their winter preparations.

While seeing a wild animal is at the top of the list for many park visitors, you'll want to do it safely. Stay at least 300 feet from bears and 75 feet from all other wildlife, and be mindful when camping in the park.

Best Times to Visit Glacier for Photography

It goes without saying that there are plenty of picture-perfect photo ops in Glacier National Park. For fields of wildflowers with mountain backdrops, visit between late June and mid-August, when you'll find yellow lilies, purple fleabanes, and pink monkeyflower blooms, to name a few. In general, Logan Pass is the best place to start your wildflower search. For waterfall photography, visit in the spring, when the snow above is melting and the water flow is at its peak.

Throughout the year, you can also capture wildlife (fall is ideal), glaciers, and endless sunsets and sunrises. The night sky is another stunning backdrop in this International Dark Sky Park. Photographers with good cold-weather gear and an intrepid streak may want to visit between January and March, when the northern lights are likeliest to appear.

The Best Time to Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road

The 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road is arguably Glacier's biggest attraction, connecting the park's east and west sides and cutting through the middle. If you only have one day to explore, make this your priority. You can stop off at some of the park's biggest draws — Jackson Glacier Overlook, Logan Pass, Lake McDonald — while covering serious ground.

Going-to-the-Sun Road takes you across the Continental Divide and over Logan Pass, which peaks at 6,646 feet. Because of its elevation, certain parts of the route get a lot of snow and are closed during the winter and spring. To experience the entire route (which you should), plan your trip between early July and early October, when the road is typically fully open. For maximum wildflower viewing while you drive, July and August may be your best bet.

Worst Times to Visit Glacier National Park

Though winter is the least crowded time of year in Glacier, the National Park Service shuts down all in-park lodging and most services during this season. That comes in addition to the challenges posed by the weather itself — the park is often covered in several feet of snow between December and March, rendering many roads impassable. If you really want to experience Glacier's extreme but peaceful winter, you'll need to come prepared with proper gear and, ideally, a background in snow sports.

Summer, by contrast, is an accessible time for nearly all types of visitors. The beginning and end of the season, though, are arguably better times to visit than the peak season of July and August. Massive crowds and bumper-to-bumper traffic on Going-to-the-Sun Road can put a damper on visits undertaken during those busy months.

Best time to visit Montana

Sunset near Great Falls Montana

The best time to visit Montana depends on the type of holiday you want to have. Each season offers different activities from skiing and snowboarding in winter, to hiking in summer and wildlife spotting in spring.

Mild temperatures in summer (around the mid 20°Cs) make it the most popular time to visit, but it's also the busiest time of year so cities and national parks are crowded and accommodation prices increase. Spring and autumn, on the other hand, are still warm enough to enjoy the great outdoors and crowds are thinner.

In winter, average temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in the northern part of the state. However, these chilly conditions are prime for winter sports at Whitefish Mountain, Blacktail Mountain and resort towns like Big Sky Resort and Discovery Ski Area.

Best for: photography, animal spotting and visiting national parks

The weather in spring is a bit all over the place. March still sees a lot of snow and many travellers continue to flock to the state's ski towns before the season closes.

As the season progresses, temperatures start to warm up with an average of 15°C in April and 19°C in May. It's an excellent time to go adventuring through the state's stunning landscapes as they thaw and flowers bloom again. Keep your camera close to capture the colours and newborn wildlife.

Glacier National Park is easier to access in spring as ice and snow melt, making the roads, trails and highways safer to drive. The same goes for Yellowstone; however, some roads may still be inaccessible so if you plan on visiting in April, so best to stick to hiking.

Best for: hiking, biking and camping

Montana doesn't get as hot as some other states, with June, July and August only averaging a handful of days over 32°C. So, while it can get hot, summer temperatures are more likely to hover in the mid 20°Cs, making it the perfect time to enjoy activities such as hiking, biking and camping.

One thing to be aware of when travelling in summer is the humidity. Montana's humidity increases to 45% in July so the air's likely to feel sticky and the temperature may feel warmer than it actually is.

Keep this in mind if you're spending long periods of time doing strenuous activities and bring plenty of water to keep hydrated.

Best for: participate in Halloween activities, scenic drives and buzzing cities

Autumn sees a fair bit of rainfall across the state. September is the wettest month with an average of 1.3 inches. Remember to pack an umbrella for those inevitable rainy days.

Autumn coincides with the beginning of a new university term so expect cities like Billings, Bozeman and Missoula to buzz with energy.

Halloween is also a celebration Montanans take very seriously so if you're travelling in October, make sure you plan some spooky activities and visit some local festivals to get into the holiday spirit.

Autumn also brings with it the changing of nature's colours from green to a hue of browns, reds and oranges, making scenic drives through the state's national parks a must.

Best for: skiing, snowboarding and hot chocolate drinking

Despite the cold temperatures in Montana, winter is almost as popular as summer thanks to the state's large mountainous regions and numerous ski resorts. January is the coldest month with an average low temperature of -11°C (colder than most of the states in America). But with freezing temperatures comes snowfall and Montana is one of the best destinations in the US to enjoy the fluffy white stuff.

While January is the coldest month, December is the snowiest, with 9.6 inches of snow expected to fall. This is closely followed by 8.7 inches in January and 6.9 inches in February. Surprisingly, March and November also receive substantial amounts of snow with 7.7 inches and 6.4 inches respectively.
