Every year, more than 10,000 humpback whales migrate 3,000 miles from Alaska to breed and raise their calves in the warm waters of Hawaii. Seeing the whales frolicking in the ocean (or hearing their magical song) is an awe-inspiring experience that attracts people from all over the world.

While whales can be spotted throughout the entire state, they are often seen swimming around the Island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island).

So, if you’re traveling to the Big Island and want to see these majestic creatures for yourself, then there are several whale watching opportunities you can choose from. Whether it’s from the sun deck of a boat or the sun-kissed shores of the coast, here are some of the best Big Island whale watching experiences.

Big Island Whale Watching FAQs

When is the big island whale watching season.

On the Big Island, most whale watching tours run from December to March. This is when the whale population is the largest, so there’s a strong chance of seeing them in the ocean (along with their babies!).

However, whales don’t migrate all at once. Depending on the year, they can be spotted in Hawaii as early as September and as late as May! Because the season is so flexible, some tours will start earlier or run later than the typical December to March season. Official whale counts occur throughout this time, so you can keep tabs on these numbers to figure out the best time to see them.

What time of day is best for whale watching on the Big Island?

One of the best things about whale watching in Hawaii is that it’s possible to see them at any hour of the day. They are always active, so you can choose a tour that fits your schedule.

With that in mind, we personally prefer tours that start in the morning. There are generally fewer boats out on the water (smaller crowds!), and the lighting is great for snapping photos of the whales. The trade winds are also much calmer, so those prone to seasickness will enjoy smooth sailing on a morning tour.

Weather-wise, it is also much cooler in the early morning. While afternoon trips can be nice, it can get really hot if you’re out in the direct sun for hours.

What month is best for whale watching on the Big Island?

Of course, the best time for whale watching is when you have the highest chance of seeing whales. This is usually when the population is the highest around the islands.

These numbers are decided by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Every January, February, and March, they conduct official whale counts on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island to determine how many whales there are in the ocean.

Peak season usually falls sometime between December and March , although the exact date changes year by year. For example, the whale population was the highest in 2023 during the month of March. But in 2022, the most whales were found in the waters in January.

What is the best place to see whales from the shore on the Big Island?

A whale watching boat tour is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures. However, you don’t need to go out on a boat or be out on the water to see them. There are lots of places around the Big Island where you can see them directly from the shore.

The sacred Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site on the Kohala Coast is one of the best places for whale watching . The name itself should give you a clue, as Puʻukoholā literally translates to “Hill of the Whale.”

Further up the coast is Kapa’a Beach Park, another great whale watching site. And if you’re on the east side, you can head to Hilo Bay to possibly see them swimming in the calm waters.

While it is possible to see whales from the coast, a boat tour increases the chances of spotting them, as you can get closer to the pods (but not too close, as we’ll discuss a little later!). It never hurts to hang out at some of the best beaches on the island and see if you spot any whales.

How much is a whale watching tour on the Big Island?

The cost of a whale watching tour varies from company to company. However, we’ve found that they generally cost anywhere from $100 to $180 per person on the Big Island. Some companies offer discounted rates for children, while others have a flat per person rate.

If you want to charter a private boat, then you can expect to shell out several thousand dollars for the tour. It’s not the cheapest excursion on the Big Island, although it can be a memorable experience if you want a personalized trip or if you’re traveling with large groups.

Is a whale watching tour worth it on the Big Island?

To be honest, the Big Island isn’t the best place in Hawaii for whale watching. Even in peak season, it’s possible that you might not see any activity on your tour. If whale watching is a big priority for you, then we recommend going to Maui instead, as it has more recorded sightings than any other island in Hawaii.

That being said, a whale watching tour is probably your best chance to see them on the Big Island. And it’s always a fun experience to be out on a boat. We’ve really enjoyed the tours that we’ve done here, but it’s important to have the expectation that whale sightings aren’t guaranteed.

The 6 Best Big Island Whale Watching Tours

Choosing a whale watching tour can be a challenging task, as the options are as vast as the ocean itself. But we’ve picked out a few of our favorites to help narrow down your choices.

Keep in mind that state and federal regulations require boats to stay 100 yards away from the whales . For this reason, most tours will head to an area and then turn off their engine so as not to disturb the whales. While they can’t approach whales, you might find that whales may choose to approach the boat, which can be a very thrilling experience if it happens!

1. Hawaii Adventures Kona

This 2.5 to 3-hour whale watching tour with Hawaii Adventures Kona departs from the Honokohau Marina on the Kona Coast. Because the tour is US Coast Guard offshore certified, the boat can access both near-shore and pelagic zones. So not only will you get to see humpback whales, but you might also get the chance to see other breeds too, like pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, spotted dolphins, and whale sharks.

There will also be a marine naturalist on board to answer any questions you may have about the sea life. You can even listen to the underwater whale song through a hydrophone, which is an extraordinary experience on its own.

The 20 passenger boat has a shaded cabin as well as an open-air back deck for viewing. It’s also nice that they guarantee that you’ll see a whale or dolphin on your cruise. If not, you’ll get a promotion code to book another tour for 50% off.

They have boats leaving at 7 AM, 11 AM, and 3 PM, but on different days of the week. Check their calendar if you’re hoping to book a certain time slot.

2. Captain Zodiac

If you want a small, intimate whale watching tour, then Captain Zodiac is one of the best options on the Big Island. The raft only takes a maximum of 16 passengers so that everyone can have a front-row seat to all the marine life action!

Compared to other boats, the raft is fast, and the ride is rather bouncy. Pregnant women or people with back problems are not advised to join. The raft also doesn’t have a shaded canopy, so keep that in mind if you don’t want to be in direct sunlight for 3 hours.

Tours are conducted by a marine naturalist who will be sharing information as you navigate the open waters. In addition to whales and other creatures like dolphins and sea turtles, the captain will also take you to sea caves and lava tubes (if conditions allow).

Captain Zodiac operates three tours a day (morning, afternoon, and sunset) and boats depart from the Honokohau Marina on the Kona Coast.

3. Adventure X

We took this exhilarating whale watching tour with Adventure X a couple of years ago and loved it so much. It’s a small group tour (20 people max) onboard an inflatable power raft with padded seats, shade, an upper viewing deck, and a bathroom!

Tours leave from Puako Bay, so this is a great option if you’re staying near the Kohala Coast. Guided by an onboard marine naturalist, you’ll be taken to areas where you can see the whales breaching, swimming, nursing, or even competing with each other.

There are two morning tours to choose from – one at 8 AM and the other at 10:30 AM. The entire trip lasts for 2 hours, and snacks and cold drinks are provided along the way.

4. Kona Snorkel Trips

Can’t decide between a whale watching tour and a historical sightseeing trip? With this guided tour by Kona Snorkel Trips , you don’t have to choose!

Hop aboard this inflatable power raft and enjoy a day exploring some of the most fascinating historical attractions on the island. Hear stories about ancient Hawaiian culture as you pass by Ali’i Drive, Holua Slide, and the grounds of the Battle of Kuamo’o in Keauhou.

But don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for five different species of whales, including the migrating humpbacks. And because the boat takes 18 passengers, this is a great experience to enjoy the scenery in a small group setting.

Tours depart from the Honokohau Harbor in Kona at 7:30 in the morning and last approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. And don’t be fooled by the tour company name. Although Kona Snorkel Trips is mainly known for its snorkel tours, this whale watching tour is purely for sightseeing, so you won’t be going into the ocean.

Big Island whale watching - whale tail

5. Sunlight on Water

Sunlight on Water offers a picturesque whale watching tour aboard their custom-built 40-foot vessel. It’s a larger boat so there are more passengers (capped at 24 people), but it’s a much smoother ride compared to the power rafts. There’s even a bathroom and a warm, fresh-water shower on board (which you probably won’t need since you won’t be going into the water)!

Leaving from Honokohau Marina in Kona, the onboard marine naturalist will share information about the gentle whales that you see splashing in the ocean. And they’ll even dip the hydrophone into the water so you can hear their majestic song.

But mamma and baby humpbacks aren’t the only creatures you’ll get to see during your visit. Sea turtles and dolphins are also commonly spotted in the area.

At the moment, Sunlight on Water only operates one whale watching tour a day at 11:30 AM.

6. Kona Ocean Adventures

The folks at Kona Ocean Adventures also operate a nice tour out to see the humpback whales. While you’re out on the ocean, you’ll get to learn all about their migrating, mating, and breeding habits (guides on the boat are incredibly knowledgeable about all things whales).

As with other tours, they also have an onboard hydrophone so you can hear them communicate with each other underwater.

Kona Ocean Adventures offers two different morning tours each day of the week. You can choose to leave on the 7 AM cruise or the 9:30 AM cruise. If neither of these times suits you (or if you simply want a VIP experience) they also offer private chartered whale watching tours . Light refreshments and snacks are provided.

Whale Watching on the Big Island Tips

Before setting sail, there are a few must-know tips to make your whale watching experience as memorable as possible.

  • Book a tour with guaranteed whale sightings. Whales are wild animals, so it can be hard to predict where they’ll be or when they’re the most active. For this reason, there’s always a chance that you might not see them during your tour. This can be a huge disappointment, especially considering that whale watching tours are not cheap. Therefore, we recommend booking a tour that offers guaranteed whale sightings. On the off-chance that you don’t see any during your trip, the company will let you go on another boat tour for free (or at a discounted price).
  • Go on a whale watching tour at the beginning of your trip. If you choose a company that offers guaranteed sightings and don’t see any whales on your tour, then your excursion will need to be rescheduled for a later date. But if you book a tour towards the end of your trip, you might not be able to take advantage of the rebooking. So, make sure to go at the beginning of your trip just in case you don’t see whales the first time and need to go again!
  • Opt for a morning tour. Although you can spot whales any time of the day, there are a few advantages of booking a morning tour. It’s generally less crowded (especially if you’re going for sunrise), and the waters are calmer since the tradewinds haven’t picked up yet. Weather-wise, mornings are also more pleasant since you won’t be sitting directly in the sun the entire time.
  • Pick the right vessel. As you can see, there are many types of boats that take passengers out to see the whales. The boat you choose can greatly impact your whale watching experience. Small, speedy power rafts are fun (our kids love them), but they aren’t suitable for pregnant women or people with injuries. Larger boats are slower and more crowded, but they can be more comfortable and affordable. At the end of the day, we recommend choosing a tour and vessel that fits your travel preferences and style.

Unsure about whether you should go whale watching on the Big Island?

While Maui is known for the best whale watching tours, if you are planning on only staying on the Big Island of Hawaii, don’t fret! When Daniel and I were there, we saw plenty of North Pacific humpback whales while snorkeling from a small boat tour on the Big Island. If whale watching is on your list of things to do in Hilo or things to do in Kona, then this guide has you covered for everything you need to know.

Here is what I recommend you know when you are planning on whale watching on the Big Island.

Everything you need to know about whale watching on the Big Island: FAQs

Where is the best place to go whale watching on the big island.

Maui is typically the most common place to see whales since the water tends to be warmer and calmer near this island. It’s one of the best things to do in Maui, but don’t let that stop you from booking whale watching tours on the Big Island of Hawaii if this is an activity you want to do.

The best place to find humpback whales is near the Kohala Coast. Whale sightings in this area tend to be two to three times better than other areas on the Big Island. This coastline is located on the most northern tip of the island, and it’s not often the easiest to get to.

That being said, there are plenty of whale tours that leave from Hilo or the Kona Coast. These are likely to be the areas where you will either fly in when you visit the Big Island, so booking boat tours from here can be much more convenient. This lessens the likelihood that you will see whales, but it’s definitely not impossible! When Daniel and I took a snorkeling tour, we saw plenty of gentle giants right by Hilo.

Keep in mind too that when you go whale watching is much more important than where you have your whale watching excursion booked. Humpback whales are located all throughout the Hawaiian Islands during whale season, so don’t feel as though you have to stick to one spot or another.

When is whale watching season on the Big Island of Hawaii?

What is much more important when you choose to go Big Island whale watching is when you decide to go. If you can, January and February are the ideal times to go since this is when seasonal humpback whales head to the Hawaiian Islands in order to mate and give birth.

You can still see them in March, but from April until December, the chances are very low and they are not located in Hawaiian waters. During this time, humpback whales spend time in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest to feed if they are located in the Northern Hemisphere.

The opportunities for whale sightings is limited, and if seeing a humpback whale is on your list of the best things to do in Hawaii, then you will want to make sure to visit during January and February.

What type of whales will I see when whale watching on the Big Island?

The most common species of whale you will see on a whale watching cruise will be the humpback whale. These majestic creatures are the kings and queens of the ocean during the winter months, and you’re most likely to see these magnificent creatures over any other this time of year.

However, the Hawaiian Islands is also home to diverse marine life which feature a number of species that can be sighted on a whale watch. Here are some you might run into:

  • Humpback Whales
  • Short-Finned Pilot Whales
  • Dwarf Sperm Whales
  • Pygmy Killer Whales
  • Blainville and Cuvier’s Beaked Whales
  • Melon-Headed Whales
  • False Killer Whales
  • Spinner Dolphins

Of course, whales aren’t the only types of animals you might see while whale watching. You can often spot green sea turtles on the ocean surface, and on a snorkel tour you might catch sight of other marine life like tropical fish and manta rays.

What should I consider when booking a whale watching tour on the Big Island?

Again, the time of year is incredibly important when planing your whale watching cruise. In order to get the most whale sightings, opt for those winter months and decide which kind of boat tour is right for you. When Daniel and I were in Hawaii, we technically did three types of whale watching tours so we could experience the magic in several ways.

Here are the main types of tours that you can expect when you want to spot whales on your trip.

Catamaran or pontoon-style boat

More sizable vessels offer additional features like restrooms and an onboard lounge, while also being equipped with enhanced tools like underwater hydrophones (for hearing whale sounds) and a cetacean observation camera. If you are looking for an opportunity to listen to whales sing on your boat ride, then this can be a good option. I also recommend this for those who have young kids or want to relax on their whale watching adventure.

You can also see from higher up, making it sometimes easier for whale sightings. However, also keep in mind that since you are on a larger ship, you might not be able to get as close to the whales as you would like.

Zodiac boat

These boat tours typically also offer snorkeling and snorkel gear, while you can also get closer to humpback whales than you would if are on a whale watching boat tour. The snorkeling along the Kona Coastline is especially known for being offering abundant sea life, so you can cross off two of these Hawaiian adventures off your list in one activity.

It can be harder to spot whales when you are closer to the water, however, and it can be bumpy boat ride depending on the weather. Also keep in mind that just because it’s whale watching season doesn’t mean that your tour won’t be canceled due to rain or other weather conditions–a bigger boat is more likely to head out on a whale watching tour if it is drizzling compared to a small boat.

Can I see whales from the shore?

One of the spectacular things about Hawaii whale watching is that you don’t even need to head out on a boat in order to spot whales. Of course, you won’t be able to get super close to them, but there are several lookout spots on the Big Island where you can spot humpback whales. Here are some recommended locations on the Kohala Coast for doing so:

  • Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site
  • Lapakahi State Historical Park
  • Kapa’a Beach Park

What is the best way to hear humpback whale songs?

The best way to hear the humpback whales singing is by actually listening to recordings online. You can do that at the Ocean Mammal Institute here . That can give you a much better understanding of how humpback whales sing and what it sounds like with a professional recording.

Some whale watching tours also include headphones you can wear so you can hear the whales located near you. Since songs can be heard from many miles away, even if you can’t see them, you still might be able to hear them. Only male humpback whales sing!

I’ve managed to capture my own humpback whale songs on my GoPro HERO10 Black just by sticking it in the water on a kayaking tour. If you plan on getting close to humpback whales on your zodiac tour, you can even have your own whale song to take home with you!

Sometimes you can even hear a humpback whale by swimming relatively close. Of course, it is important to be respectful and keep your distance. However, diving a bit underwater off the Kona Coast might be enough to hear those songs during whale season.

What should I bring on a whale watching tour?

You’ll have different things you want to bring with you depending on which whale watching tour you book. If you are on a cruise, you’ll need fewer items on your Hawaii packing list than if you are planning on a snorkel tour. I recommended these items if you are on a cruise:

If you are planning on snorkeling, then you will need to check and see if your tour provider also offers gear. This can save you from having to pack all of your own gear in your suitcase.

Tips for whale watching

Here are some tips to help you spot some humpback whales on your Big Island whale watching adventure!

  • Head out in the early morning. Not only is the ocean typically calmer during this time, but it’s also when humpback whales are most active.
  • Look for spouts. You’ll probably see these before anything else on your whale watch. When a whale spouts, you’re likely to see them dive back down again into the water. This can also be helpful when you’re looking out into a vast sea.
  • Consider a good pair of binoculars . While it can be fun seeing them with the naked eye on your Big Island whale adventure, this can give you an extra closeup. I also use a telephoto camera lens when I want to get a better picture!
  • Be patient. You’re viewing animals in their natural habitat, meaning that you can’t control what they’ll do or when they will show up.

Conclusion: whale watching on the Big Island

In conclusion, the Big Island offers a truly unforgettable and mesmerizing experience for all those who embark on a whale watching adventure. With its stunning coastline, rich marine life, and warm aloha spirit, it’s no wonder that this destination has become a top choice for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. The majestic humpback whales, their playful antics, and the awe-inspiring breaches are a testament to the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

The 3 Best Whale Watching Tours on Big Island

When you think of the perfect vacation on Big Island, you might picture luaus, beautiful sandy beaches, and ukuleles, but you may not be aware of the incredible opportunities for whale watching tours on Big Island of Hawaii.

During the winter months of December through April, over a dozen distinct species of whales, from melon-headed whales, false killer whales and orcas to sperm whales, pilot whales and beaked whales migrate to the warmer, shallower waters around Big Island to mate or give birth. But despite this varied collection of species, the most sighted is the humpback whale, as large groups travel from the frigid and dangerous waters of Alaska to the calmer, safer sub-tropical Pacific.

whale watching gold coast, sea word, humpback-2613448.jpg

This perfectly coincides with tourists and adventure seekers looking to escape the colder months of their hometowns in the sun and fun of the Hawaiian Islands.

There are quite a few great spots for whale watching on Big Island , but the best places are the coasts along Kohala, North Kohala and North Kona, all of which offer plenty of opportunities to see the beautiful creatures in three specific ways: lounging on the beach, swimming or snorkeling, and chartering a boat for a whale watching tour.

Tip from a local : The winter months are the rainy season in Hawaii. Typically, all the islands have similar weather patterns. The east side (windward) of each island is usually rainy and cooler, while the west side (leeward) is usually hot and dry. While there is potential to spot whales in Hilo Bay on the east side, this is one of the rainiest spots on Big Island. So, if you’re looking to enjoy the beaches and abundant sunshine while you keep a lookout for whales, you’re much better off on the west side in towns like Kona. Just be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen.

So, the biggest question to ask yourself when planning a whale watching excursion is: how close and personal do you want the whales to get?

Here is a quick overview of the options for viewing sites and snorkeling locations but keep reading for recommendations for the best whale watching tours on Big Island.

Want and little more information about whale watching or just watch from shore? Here are our favorite places to watch whales on the Big Island of Hawaii

If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, then there are four great parks and beaches with a high likelihood of spotting these amazing creatures.

whale, humpback, humpback whale-1118876.jpg

  • Lapakahi State Historical Park, located on the northwestern edge of the island, rises to an elevation of about 100’ above sea level, providing a perfect overlook to spot whales in the distance.
  • Kapa’a Beach Park is located very close to Lapakahi State Park, and while it is 20’ lower in elevation, it does provide shaded picnic pavilions, so it might be a better choice for extended whale watching.
  • Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, located a little further south than the previous two, is the best place to spot whales, as its name translates to “hill of the whale”.
  • If you’d prefer to stay a bit closer to Kona, the Pu’u Kuili cinder cone overlooking Kua Bay rises to 342’ above sea level, providing incredible views of the ocean.

If you want to get a bit closer to the action and you’d like to get your feet wet with a little swimming and snorkeling, there are many fantastic beach options all around the island, but not really any specific recommendations in this list simply because swimming and snorkeling are less about whale watching and more about listening to their beautiful song. Sound travels much further underwater, so if you’re planning to swim or snorkel anyway, you may be treated to a serenade. During whale season, the majority of safe and accessible beaches on the west side of the island, in particular, can offer plenty of opportunities to hear the whales singing without the need to enter deep and dangerous waters.

Now, on to the main point. Boat tours really are the best way to ensure an unforgettable whale watching experience. There are many charter options for whale watching in Kona and in Hilo, but most of them offer essentially the same (wonderful) experience. So, here are the three best charter companies that offer some unique features and stand above the rest.

Captain Zodiac Kona Whale Watching Tour

Captain Zodiac is the best tour option for those wanting to get as close as possible to the whales, while maintaining the legally required 100 feet of distance to ensure the safety of the beautiful creatures and, of course, the passengers. Their 16-person Zodiac rafts are smaller than many of the other charter companies, giving every passenger a front-row view. However, this 3-hour tour can be a bit rough with such a small boat, so Captain Zodiac caters to the more adventurous whale watchers.

Where: They are located just south of the Kona International Airport on the southern side of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park.

Hours of Operation: Their tours run every day except Wednesday from January to the end of March.

Tour Details: The smaller, faster Zodiac rafts allow more time to explore the coastline along the way, with the possibility of getting up close to lava tubes and sea caves. But because of the rough nature of the boat ride, they do not allow pregnant women or anyone with neck or back problems.

Cost: $75 for children ages 4-12 and $105 for anyone 13 and older.

Perks: With on-board hydrophones, you can listen to the hauntingly beautiful whale song during the tour. They also offer sunset tours aboard 24-foot Zodiac rafts to combine two of Hawaii’s most beautiful sights.

Captain Dan McSweeney’s Whale Watch Learning Adventures

Captain Dan McSweeney has studied whales for nearly four decades and has worked with National Geographic and Discovery Channel . He personally conducts and narrates every tour to ensure that his guests not only have an amazing experience but also learn about whales and ocean conservation. This is Kona’s only full-time whale watching tour company, unlike most other charters that offer various other snorkeling and sightseeing tour options.

Where: They are also located just south of the Kona International Airport on the southern side of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, in the same harbor as Captain Zodiac.

Hours of Operation: Their 3-hour tours run daily at 7 AM and 11 AM during whale season between January to the end of April.

Tour Details: Captain Dan pilots “Lady Ann” on every tour. The boat has ample seating, sunny and shaded areas and welcomes guests of all ages. While other tours offer more rugged adventures, Captain Dan focuses more on an educational and leisurely cruise experience coupled with unforgettable whale sightings.

Cost: $125 + tax per child (infant to 11 years) and $135 + tax per adult.

Perks: Captain Dan guarantees that guests will see whales during his tours, using his decades of experience studying whale migration habits to guide him to whale sanctuaries that other charters may not know.

Hilo Ocean Adventures Humpback Whale Exploration

If you would prefer to stay on the east side of the island, Hilo Ocean Adventures does offer a unique whale watching tour, so you do not have to make the long (but beautiful) drive to Kona. The Humpback Whale Exploration tour is a bit shorter than others at 2 hours, but there are waterfalls and cliffs along the Hamakua coast to make it a great option for those equally interested in basking in the beautiful Hawaiian scenery while keeping one eye out for whales.

Where: They are located near the Hilo International Airport and just around the corner from the majority of the hotels and resorts of Hilo.

Hours of Operation: They offer three different tours at 8:30 AM, 11 AM and 1:30 PM every day between December and April.

Tour Details: Children must be 8 years or older to participate and due to the rough nature of the boat ride, pregnant women, people with back and neck problems, people over 300lbs and those who are unable to swim without assistance are not allowed.

Cost: $119 per person, with an optional upgrade to the Whale Song Snorkel package for $158 per person.

Perks: Hilo Ocean Adventures offers the Whale Song Snorkel package for additional cost, which includes full snorkel gear and lifejacket, so that guests can see, potentially swim near, and hear the beautiful song of the humpback whales. Also, this tour offers guests the chance to learn more about native Hawaiian history and lore, specifically the story of Kanaloa, the god of the animals in the ocean, which is represented by the whale.

Final thoughts on Whale Watching Tours in Hawaii

No matter which charter company you choose, be sure to check in with their website. Most companies list when their reservations open for the next whale watching season months in advance and they all sell out very quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions about Whale Watching on the Big Island

Before I get into a breakdown of the top whale-watching tours on the Big Island, I wanted to cover some frequently asked questions!

Where is the best whale watching on the Big Island?

The best place to go whale watching on the Big Island is off the Kohala coast, on the northwest end of the island. This area typically sees 2-3 times as many whales as other areas on the Big Island. However, most whale watching tours will leave from the Kailua-Kona area, and you can still spot plenty of whales from the Kona coast! You can learn more about the different ares of the Big Island in my guide: Where to Stay on the Big Island .

What month is best for whale watching in Hawaii?

There is no specific month per say, as whale watching season runs from November – April when the whales are migrating from Alaska. However, whale sightings typically peak in December and January ! This is also high season in Hawaii, so be prepared for crowds!

Is whale watching better in Hilo or Kona?

While there are plenty of whale sightings in Hilo, Kona is the better option! Most tours leave from the Kona side of the Big Island. Plus, during whale season, the Hilo side sees an insane amount of rain, which puts a damper on whale watching tours!

Which Hawaiian Island has the most whale sightings?

During the 2023 season, a count was conducted on the same day in February across the Hawaiian islands. Oahu saw 467, the Big Island saw 68, Kauai saw 273, and Maui saw 313.

How much does a whale watching tour cost?

The average cost of a whale watching tour on the Big Island is around $120. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a tour that is less than $100!

What time of day is best for whale watching?

The morning is the best time of day for whale watching on the Big Island! In fact, the amount of whales seen around 8:00am is over 50% more than the amount seen at noon. In addition, ocean conditions are typically calmer in the morning, making your ride more enjoyable and making it easier to spot whales!

What types of whales can I see on the Big Island?

The most common type of whale you will see during whale season on the Big Island is the humpback whale. During the winter months, humpback whales migrate from the frigid Alaskan waters to the warmer waters of Hawaii! Aside from humpbacks, you might also see pilot whales and false killers whales year round on the Big Island.

Pssst: Planning a trip to the Big Island?? Make sure to check out my ultimate One Week Big Island Itinerary to help plan your vacation!

Are there any regulations or guidelines for whale watching in Hawaii?

Absolutely! State and federal regulations like the Marine Mammal Protection Act exist to protect humpback whales in Hawaii. The most important regulation prohibits anyone from approaching humpback whales within 100 yards. This applies to tour boat operators, personal water crafts, and swimmers.

Are whale sightings guaranteed on these tours?

Of course, no company can guarantee you will see whales on their tour! They are wild animals after all. However, most tours offer an opportunity to come on another tour if you don’t see whales on your first. Plus, most of these tours include a whale watching guide who will help you spot them!

Can you see whales from the shore?

Absolutely! You’ll have the best chance of seeing whales from the shore on the Kohala Coast. Places like Lapakahi State Historical Park and Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site are both free to enter and a great places to watch for whales! Again, go in the morning for your best chance.

Top 5 Whale Watching Cruises on the Big Island of Hawaii: Cost, Duration, and More

Afternoon Whale Watching with Hang Loose Boat Tours

  • Price: Starting at $109 per person
  • Duration: 2.5-3 hours
  • TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5/5 stars ⭐
  • Includes : Bottled Water & Snacks
  • Pick Up Location: 74-425 Kealakehe Pkwy

If you are looking to experience a smaller group tour for your whale watching cruise, Hang Loose Boat Tours is a good option! Their 24-person catamarans offer a more intimate experience than other whale watching cruises. However, a smaller boat will not handle the waves as well. In addition, this tour leaves at 12:30pm, when the seas tend to be rougher than the mornings. So if you are prone to sea sickness, I would opt for another tour.

Adventurous Captain Zodiac Whale Watching Cruise

  • Price: Starting at $127 per person
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Includes : Sodas, fruit juices, bottled water and snacks
  • Pick Up Location: 74-425 Kealakehe Pkwy #16

With 5 stars on TripAdvisor, this whale watching tour is great for those looking for a little bit of adventure! The tour takes place on a small, zodiac raft that only fits 16 passengers. Because of this, this tour isn’t recommended for pregnant people or those with back/neck problems. However, it does allow you to cover a lot of ground (water I should say), and the boat doesn’t rock as much as traditional tour boats.

Depending on where the whales are spotted, you might even get a chance to see coastal caves and volcanic lava tubes on this tour! Plus, the boat has a hydrophone on board, which allows you to hear the whales singing underwater. The tour is typically offered at 8:00am and 11:45am – I recommend the earlier one!

Wake Up with Whales By Ocean Sports Cruises

  • Price: Starting at $120 per person
  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Includes : Beer, wine and soft drinks
  • Pick Up Location: 69-275 Waikōloa Beach Dr

As the name suggests, this whale watching cruise leaves bright and early at 8:00am from the Kohala Coast! The Kohala Coast is one of the best places to see whales on the Big Island. This tour takes place on a beautiful catamaran, which really elevates the experience! They also have hydrophones on board, so you can hear the whales’ songs!

This tour is highly-rated on TripAdvisor; however, it is a bit shorter than the other whale watching tours in this guide. Oceans Sports Cruises does offer a no-whale guarantee policy. Plus, beer and wine are included 🙂

Whale Watching with Body Glove Cruises

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • TripAdvisor Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐
  • Includes : Snacks and light refreshments
  • Pick Up Location: Kailua Pier

For those looking for a comfortable and convenient whale watching tour, this is a great option! The Whale Watching with Body Glove cruise takes place on a large, double-decker catamaran. This boat has a large shaded sun deck and cushioned seats, so it’s perfect for guests who want to be more comfortable. The boat is also wheelchair accessible!

In addition to comfort, this tour leaves directly from downtown Kona at the Kailua Pier. So if you are staying in Kona, you don’t have to worry about journeying far for pick up! The tour offers free snacks and light refreshments like coffee, soda, water, and tea, plus alcohol is available for purchase!

This whale watching cruise also has a no-whale guarantee policy! However, the only time slot is at 1:00pm, so you may not have as much luck as on a morning cruise!

Final Thoughts

As you can see, whale watching is one of the most adventurous things you can do while visiting the Big Island. If you are visiting the Big Island between December and April, you need to add one of these tours to your itinerary! You won’t regret it 🙂

Also, if animals are your things, make sure to check out my other Big Island blog posts! The Big Island is home to some amazing marine life. I highly recommend a night dive with manta rays and looking for dolphins as you kayak to Captain Cook ! The Big Island also has some incredible snorkeling where you can see all kinds of underwater critters!

  • Departure : ‘Anaeho’omalu Beach, 69 – 275 Waikōloa Beach Dr, Waikoloa Village
  • Departure Time : 8:00 AM
  • Includes : Light refreshments, beer, wine, soft drinks, live commentary

Trust me when I say this is one of the coolest tours not only in Hawaii, but in the world. Lasting just 1.5 hours, there’s no excuse to not fit this fantastic experience into any itinerary! The Wake Up With the Whales Cruise Tour takes you on a wild adventure in search of Humpback whales as they travel through Hawaiian waters as they migrate.

However, this isn’t just any cruise: this one will take you out early in the morning with a professional naturalist onboard who’s there to decipher whale songs. In fact, we were even able to hear the songs with the underwater hydrophones they have on the boat!

This was a seriously amazing experience, giving me goosebumps every time I heard these beautiful creatures singing! Hanging out in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Waters, we were surprisingly close to shore and I loved knowing that the whales were completely unbothered here.

The views were unmatchable, and we saw plenty of these gentle giants – even one breaching close to our boat! Onboard, the attention to detail was evident, as was the fantastic service and friendliness.

The catamaran has plenty of space for walking around, relaxing, or simply sitting back and enjoying the amazing view with some beer, wine (pro tip: get the mimosas), and snacks.

It’s not included by default, but we included the upgraded Snorkel Adventure Cruise which let us get under the water to see all the natural beauty and wildlife from under the surface!

I seriously can’t wait to take this tour again when I’m in Hawaii – it truly was the highlight of our trip, which is really saying a lot!

7. Zodiac Raft Whale Watching Adventure

  • Duration : 3 hours

  • Departure Time : 8:00 AM, 11:45 AM, 3:30 PM
  • Includes : Rafting expedition, sodas, fruit juices, bottled water, snacks, local taxes

The Zodiac Raft Whale Watching Adventure is a bit more in-depth, and ideal for slightly longer tour options. There are various start times available to fit in easily with my itinerary, making it easy to take.

This tour gave me a whole new perspective on Humpback whales, Hawaiian history, geology, and so much more! Lasting 3 hours, this is much more than just seeing whales – though I honestly would take this tour if that’s all it was, too.

Meet up with your captain at Honokohau Marina, where you’ll board and take a seat to soak in the gorgeous natural beauty all around you. I loved feeling the fresh sea breeze through my hair while listening to our captain regale us tales about Hawaiian history, Hawaii’s unique geology, and so much more.

They told us about how in the wintertime, Humpback whales make their journey over here to mate and give birth to baby whales! As our captain was also a professional naturalist, we were able to listen to the onboard hydrophone and he “translated” the whale songs for us.

I mean, where else in the world would you be able to have that kind of experience? We not only saw gorgeous whales, but we saw plenty of turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and tons of tropical fish. I know it’s not always the case, but we were even able to see some coastal sea caves, lava tubes, and more.

As our vessel only held a max of 16 passengers, we were able to have more of a customized experience in an intimate setting. Overall, it was a fantastic time that I can’t recommend enough!

FAQs About Big Island Whale Watching Tours

Why are whale watching tours so amazing.

Whale watching tours are exciting adventures that take you to the open ocean to see the majestic humpback whales. Humpbacks travel thousands of miles every year from Alaska to Hawaii to mate and give birth. Imagine seeing these huge and graceful creatures breach, splash, and sing right in front of you. That’s what whale watching tours are all about!

Where can I find whale watching tours on the Big Island?

You can find whale watching tours on the Big Island along the west and north coasts, where the water is deeper and warmer. The best places are Kohala, North Kohala, and North Kona, where you can see the most whales and enjoy the stunning scenery of the island.

How do I choose the best whale watching tour for me?

If you are staying in Kona your best bet is to book a tour that leaves from Kona or Honokohau Harbor. You can choose from small zodiacs to large catamarans, depending on the type of adventure you want.

The most scenic and diverse experience is a tour that departs from Kohala or North Kohala. You will see not just whales but dolphins, turtles and manta rays. You will also have views of the coastline, mountains and waterfalls.

If you want to combine your whale watching tour with other activities and attractions, you should check out the options available in each destination. For example, you can visit Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site or Lapakahi State Historical Park before or after your tour in Kohala, explore the beaches and shops of Kona town, or discover the coffee farms and art galleries of Holualoa.

When is the best time to go on a whale watching tour?

Whale season runs from November to April. During this time, thousands of humpback whales visit the Hawaiian waters to escape the cold and find mates. The peak months are January and February, when you can see the most whales and their newborn calves.

How long does a whale watching tour last?

A whale watching tour typically lasts for about two to four hours, depending on the tour operator and the destination. Tours range from $65 to $155 per person, prices vary on the size of the boat and participants.

What is the cheapest whale watching tour on the Big Island?

If you are on a budget but would like to see the majestic whales then we recommend the Kailua-Kona: Whale Watching Cruise . You still get a 2.5 to 3 hour experience it’s just on a bigger boat so you don’t get the personal experience.

What is the best Big Island whale watching tour?

If you don’t mind spending a little more for a great whale watching tour, we recommend the Kealakekua Bay, Captain Cook & Marine Life Tour . On this tour you go out on a smaller boat for a more personal experience plus you have a whale naturalist on board to answer your questions.

Tips For Whale Watching Tours on the Big Island

Dress in layers:.

Even if you feel like it’s hot, it’s not the same once you get out on the water. The open-air ocean can get really windy and chilly.

That doesn’t mean go full-on parka mode. We recommend wearing layers so you can add or subtract as you go. It’s always a good idea to have waterproof outer layers as you may get splashed being on the deck

Be Patient:

Whales have down times of close to 10 minutes, so if you don’t immediately see them, don’t feel discouraged. If you do see a whale and it disappears, remember which direction it was swimming and follow your line of sight in that direction.

Choose a Viewing Site:

Choose a viewing site and stay there. Moving around usually doesn’t increase your odds of spotting a whale. When it doubt, however, the captain and crew will help point them out to you. Many tours have onboard naturalists and are a great resource to have. They are experts in the nature and habits of whales and are great at spotting them.

Listen to the Guide:

Your guide is an expert in whale behavior and can offer valuable insights on where to look and what to expect. Listen carefully to their instructions for your best chance to see the whales.

Choose your tour:

There are quite a few whale watching tours on the Big Island. They vary widely in price depending on the boat and how many people are on the tour. You can take a tour that departs from Kona or Hilo but they will all give you a close-up view of the whales. Most tours have at least one naturalist on board who can provide information and commentary. We would recommend the Kailua-Kona Whale Watching Cruise.

A kayaking tour is also a good option that allows you to paddle along the coast and see the whales from a very different perspective. Some of them also have snorkeling or diving opportunities to see the whales underwater. If you looking for a thrilling experience, take a helicopter tour that will give you an aerial view of the whales.

Respect the wildlife:

Many of the whales are endangered species that deserve our protection. Follow the guidelines of your tour operator and don’t try to feed or harass them in any way. Always keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing them. Remember that you are a guest in their environment.

Learn their behavior:

If you learn how they breathe, dive and feed, it will help you predict their movements and anticipate their actions. If you see a whale arching its back or lifting its tail flukes you can assume it is about to dive. If you see a whale slapping its tail on the water, it probably means it’s feeding or playing.

What can I expect at a whale watching tour?

A whale watching tour usually starts with a check-in at the harbor or hotel pickup. You will board a boat that is specially designed for whale watching, with large windows, open decks, and comfortable seats. You will meet your captain and guide who will brief you on the safety rules and what to expect.

You will cruise along the coast in search of whales. You will have plenty of opportunities to see them in action, as they breach, tail slap, spy hop, and blow. You will also learn about their behavior, biology, and conservation from your guide. You may also hear their songs through a hydrophone or see them underwater through a glass-bottom boat.

Whale watching tours are usually two and four hours. It depends on weather conditions and how long it takes to find the whales.

Tips For Photographing Whales

  • Use the right equipment: When you are photographing whales, you will need a powerful zoom lens that will cover a wide range of focal lengths, from wide-angle to telephoto. A lens that is longer than 400 mm will be difficult to use on a boat because of the rocking motion, so use something like a 70-200 mm or a 100-400 mm lens. You need a camera that can shoot fast and has a high burst rate and autofocus. A DSLR or a mirrorless camera with a sports mode or a shutter priority mode is your best bet. Don’t forget to bring extra batteries and a waterproof bag to protect your gear.
  • Adjust your shutter speed : Whales are faster than you think! You need a fast shutter speed to freeze their motion and avoid blurry shots. A least 1/500 of a second or faster will do, depending on the light and how fast the whale is moving. You can also increase your ISO or open up your aperture to get more light and faster shutter speeds. Just be careful to not overexpose your pictures.
  • Use the right exposure: Since whales are surrounded by water and possibly a sunny sky, this can fool your camera’s metering system and result in underexposed shots. To avoid this, you can use exposure compensation or use a manual exposure and adjust your settings according to the scene. A good tip is to use spot metering or center-weighted metering and aim for the whale’s body or head.
  • Use continuous shooting mode: Whales will appear and disappear in just a matter of seconds, so you have to be ready at a moments notice! By using continuous shooting mode, you can take many shots in a row that will increase your odds of getting the perfect shot. You can also use continuous autofocus mode or Al Servo mode to track the whale’s and keep it in focus. Try to anticipate the whale’s behavior, your guide will help you out here.
  • Use a scale: Whales are quite massive, but they may look small in your photos if you don’t have something for scale. To help show their true size, try to include something of scale in your shot composition. Try and incorporate other boats, birds, mountains, or even the city skyline. You can also get closer to the water level and shoot from a low angle to make the whale look more imposing.
  • Consider the weather:   Obviously the weather will have an impact on your whale photography. It can change the color and contrast of your pictures. Ideally you want to shoot in bright sunlight to bring out the details and texture of the whale’s skin. Just because it’s cloudy or even foggy you can still get some amazing shots with soft light and muted tones. Just make sure you adjust your white balance and exposure accordingly.
  • Learn their behavior: By learning how they breathe and dive you can predict their movements and anticipate their actions. As an example if you see a whale arching its back or lifting its tail flukes, it means it’s about to dive. If you see the whales slapping its fins or tail on the surface, it’s feeding or playing. By paying attention to these signs it will help you capture the perfect photo!
